Took this class online and tried my hardest, but still didn't pass. I don't recommend taking an online class with this teacher (or any math class online). The final was 50% of total grade (only 22 questions), midterm was 25%, quizzes were 15%, homework was 10%. He would take a week to respond to emails and wouldn't give detailed responses.

I do not even know how this professor got hired!!? He gets completely lost and confused when he is doing the problems, and when gets to that, he assigns it as a homework. Students always correct his mistakes every day every class. Tests are extremely hard and tricky. The number of homework problems is insane. AVOID this teacher as much as you can!!

Super hard because he powers through info. Put 7 hours of studying everyday, but I was still so over loaded with class work never felt like I could pass a class. By grace I got a C don't know how? Really fast pace and he messed up on test several times and even got review question answer mistakes he made in math. Nothing but curve balls on tests.

His lectures are basically copies of the textbook and attendance isn't mandatory so why bother coming? The textbook makes more sense than his lectures anyway. He seems unsure about the material he is teaching. I would NOT recommend him if you have a hard time in math or if you want to learn anything about Linear Algebra in general.

He doesnt teach whatsoever. All he does is copy notes from the book and then he might try to put his own spin on it but that just makes it more confusing. Half the times he doesnt even seem to know what he's teaching. He'll be teaching something and then he'll realize he messed up and then tell us to scratch all of it.

He may be a nice person (who is great at teaching Math 253) but I will do all I can to prevent this man from having another Multivariable Calculus course. He has a worse understanding of the material than most students, and don't expect his help with homework problems. Don't go to class either; his notes are a confusing mess of incorrect solutions.

DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He is the most INCONSIDERATE professor ever. I am a straight A student and I have never had such a hard time in ANYBODY's class room except his. He doesn't even teach he just copies down notes. He does not know his own material but expects his students to know it. Tests are SUPER difficult compared to the material he presents

I took his summer class and although I was aware of how fast the criteria would be, as well as the constant homework. This guy couldn't teach. Within the first day, we worked only based off this workbook written by a prof. from IVC. The workbook had CONSTANT errors and Vargas was always unsure of the work and would improvise. It was dramatizing.

Lectures were always confusing and disorganized. Tests had nothing to do with what he taught. I was lucky I passed.

I took Vargas' online math 353 class. Not a great experience, he is not every helpful when emailing. He is very last minute and seems unorganized. Also, he doesn't offer much assistance. I would not recommend take his online class.

worst math teacher i have ever taken. Students ask him questions on how to solve a problem from the textbook and he doesn;t even know how to do it. During his lectures Vargas forget how to do his own problmes on the board and he trys to do it while teaching us and he just end up confuseing us. Had to change my major becuase of him.

Really nice and smart guy, but very disorganized and not the greatest when it comes to explaining things. Often times he will assign homework last minute because he realized he didn't include material he was supposed to which makes it hard to plan for on a weekly basis. Poor explaining skills and talks to himself mostly with his back to the class.

He will not prepare you to succeed. In fact, he said "I want you to struggle". Doesn't post study guides in a timely fashion, messes up example problems during lecture, and expects you to memorize copious amounts of info and doesn't even mention half of it on the test. If you have a job or other classes, good luck. You'll need it. Worst prof ever.

Hardest class I've ever taken. He does not care for his students to pass. He just goes off the textbook word for word and writes it on the board. Teaches very quickly and does not take the time to make sure his students understand the material. He puts extra credit on tests but they are so difficult that no one gets them right.

The professor just teaches the examples word for word from the textbook and rushes through them quickly. So it can be hard to follow along at his pace. Tests are difficult but he puts an extra credit question on each exam... even the extra credit is hard to get, only four people got it. I would not recommend this professor. Take at your own risk.

My grade in high school calculus was 102% (perfect scores on every test), and I barely got a B in this 3A class. He doesnt teach well, constantly makes little math errors, and often erases and restarts his examples because a student corrects his final answer. He doesnt break things down enough to be able to comprehend the material.

Terrible! I dropped this class and got a W, despite the fact that I have always been really good in math. I retook this class with another professor and got an A for both calc 1 and calc2. He is VERY DISORGANIZED and DOESN'T TEACH. He often makes mistakes in lectures which his students point out. He always mumbled over how to work the hard problems

Avoid at all cost! His lectures are vague and he moves through the material very fast. His rarely gives in class practice and when he does give any, he doesn't go over it. The hw is online through mymathlab which isn't any helpful if you're struggling with understanding a concept. He makes lots of mistakes when lecturing. He is not competent.

No sympathy towards students at all - even the good students. He doesn't deserve to teach. Test were hard but kind of similar to his study guide. This is just a self-taught course. Feelsbad

Absolutely the WORST teacher I have ever taken. He issued 2 different final study guides, like make up your mind. The second copy was issued last minute 3 days before the final like are you kidding me? and he expects us to pass??? I regret taking his class.

He is probably the worst math professor I have ever had. His lectures just make you more confused, and there are a million of them. He is super unempathetic towards people and doesn't care if something else is going on in your life. In his lectures never make sense and half the time the problems are incorrect.

Choosing Professor Vargas should be a last resort. I managed to get a B overall without completely finishing a single exam. He gives pretty long but doable exams, but doesn't give enough time to finish them. We also have to take time during the exams to scan & upload them to canvas. Although the material is easy, do not rely on his lectures.

He literally wasted me thousand bucks.

This guy is pretty bad. His lectures were long then he doesn't bother to explain. He sits back so far away expects the student to do more and everything. It is easier just to learn on youtube for CH 6-11 and do the hw but he has jump in here and there, sits back, manages the class, and tell you things in a very self-absorbed and condescending way.

This instructor acts nice but way too condescending as a person and to teaching lecture goes over textbook examples and assign huge amount hw with deadline to rush through. gives hw late better do it or get zero he did a lot math himself but condescends to student for how much math done compare to him. makes 100-200k doing this.

He assigns a lot of homework and barely gives us time to finish them. He also doesn't care to explain well. Just repeats the same explanation and says "that's all I can say" without even giving at least details to understand better. It's also hard to keep up with notes since he moves in such a fast pace like he's purposely trying to make us fail.

Do not believe a single positive review. Homework is graded automatically, so that not only will you not be able to see what mistakes you made, but Dr. Vargas has every incentive to assign as much homework as possible, since he doesn't end up doing a thing to help you with it. Class averages for tests so far: 17.4/50 18.0/50 4.2/7 5.7/20

Lectures don't make sense and he does not help you in any way. Taking this class from online to in person is so difficult and he rushes to finish topics. Exams are graded intensely and doesn't offer a lot of partial credit. If you are already not strong in calculus, you will do horrible and fall behind. Class averages are below 50% in everything

Just please don't take. A majority of our class this semester is failing (class stats are open to all students on WebAssign where he updates everyone's grades). I know Math 3B is difficult, but he just makes it unnecessarily hard. Doesn't want to upload his notes, gives HW out incredibly late, and overall reeks of privilege and apathy :/

Do not take this professor at all costs. I have never seen a course with such a high fail rate. The class averages for every test were well below 50% and there is no curve. Online homework was absurdly difficult to complete as the amount of problems were insane.

Do not ever take this professor, I regret it very much. The class average for one of the exams was an F, and the man still refused to curve, even stating that the grades were better than usual!

He is extremely uncaring and goes off on tangents about how the math world is wrong but he is right. When I withdrew halfway in the semester, I had a 36%, and the most recent quiz average was only 7%. He does not teach. I have always been good at math until I took his class. I felt like I was not smart enough to take this level of math.

Memorize or fail.

I was always good at math my entire life. So far I have a B but I'll prolly raise it up soon, this teacher though has 0 clue on how to teach. If you don't have much free time please please please do not take his class he doesn't teach properly and makes 0 sense, he is nice but not caring at all.

This class is very difficult. If you have not previously taken a calculus class (not pre-calc higher than) I do not recommend this class. The teacher moves through material very quickly and barely explains. When asked questions he has a difficult time explaining and often sounds confused about what he's even talking about. Nice guy but bad class.

He seems like a nice guy but he really doesn't know how to teach at all. He expects you to already know how to do everything, and goes through lectures way too fast. He also makes small mistakes so often that you can't tell if he's wrong or you're wrong. Test averages are always low 60s but he doesn't think it is a problem with his teachings.

Safe to say this was a terrible class. He really does not teach properly. He only pulls material from the textbook and overcomplicates/messes up every example he gives. He is a tough grader and doesn't have clear test guides. Dont take this class if it is your first time taking calculus or you want a good math professor.

He is a nice guy, and very understanding. He is awful at teaching and messes up a lot. We constantly had redo problems he messed up on and waste time. More than half the class dropped, and there were only ten people left. He also goes extremely fast during lecture because he only cares about finishing the notes. Your grade is based on tests mostly.

Kind man outside of teaching, but terrible professor. Everything must be self-taught to get an A. Lectures move incredibly fast and he is terrible at explaining things. Do not ask to curve any exam or quiz, regardless if the average is a D-F or below. Responds to emails (1-2 days) and is accessible in person without issue. Course is exam/quiz reliant mostly and exams are graded harshly. No rooms for mistakes on exams so everything must be perfect..answer & work MUST be correct or its a 0

I tried really hard to understand his class but he is a difficult teacher. I barely missed any days but still was so confused, when reaching out for help he wasn't clear, his lectures are long and boring. Your grades are very dependent on tests, overall he was not a very helpful or effective teacher.

Very tough grader, with no curves or extra credit is very minimal. Such a nice person but not a good teacher.

Professor Vargas only puts exams and quizzes in the grade book which makes it very hard to learn the material since homework is not mandatory. He never curves exams. There was only one extra credit opportunity. About 10-20 people were left by the day of the final exam. Would not recommend if it is your first time taking calculus.

Professor Vargas is a very nice guy but man is he bad at teaching differential equations. Many examples that were discussed in lecture were done incorrectly and later corrected by STUDENTS, the more difficult concepts were taken directly from the textbook, limiting exposure and on top of this, the integrals he expects you to do on exams are hard!!!

Horrible lectures. He writes definitions straight from the textbook, solves one or two and then moves on. Nice guy, really bad teacher. Homework is 5 pts every two weeks, quizzes are 4 questions worth 5 pts each. I had three quizzes and three homework assignments before the midterm. His midterm review had nothing what he taught on it so I dropped.

I have a 3.7 gpa. Hes been seen on multiple days not able to answer linear algebra questions He has made a cumulative of at most 5 hours of mistakes, gives little partial credit, and by FAR the worst professor here at IVC, I URGE the Dean to check in his classes. my last class before transfer STEM EE. He's completely lost in this class, unable to understand his own work or adequately answer student questions. Unprepared for class and waste's lot's of time with the excuse " I havent taught it in 5 years". Ah, I didn't know incompetence was a valid excuse to take students money and "teach" a course! Very inconsistent. An insult to education.

The "good reviews" are just his reviews he did for himself. Do not take the class. The whole "oh ur lazy" is fake. I went to his office hours EVERY DAY and it was like I was being taught by a starfish.

He's caring, but his style of teaching is just writing on the board and assuming people got it. Anyway he's really nice but just horrendous at lecture, don't recommend.

Personally, I don't think he is qualified for being this course's professor. His notes are copied directly from the textbook, and the textbook explains better than he does. Additionally, quizzes and exams make up 88% of the grades, requiring perfect scores to earn a good grade. He makes more mistakes than students, unbelievable professor!

He never taught matrix factorization in our class which is essential in the realm of big league computing. A good man, but needs to stop writing reviews of himself and instead become a better teacher as we diligently become better students

He is not very understanding at all and is an extremely difficult person. He is uncooperative and answers emails in an extremely passive aggressive way. I had to drop this class because he was just so incredibly uncooperative and rude.

BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE, I THOUGHT I SHOULD GIVE EVERYONE A HEADS-UP CAUSE THERE IS STILL TIME TO DROP IT. He's a Good guy but he doesn't know what THE HELL HE'S TEACHING and HIS EXAMS LET ME NOT. Do not take his class. Trust me. Lectures consist of literally nothing but textbook problems. Ungodly amounts of homework. Every single quiz/test the class average would be anywhere from 45-55%. Never curved once and never has in past years. Also writes his own reviews. You will be LOST in this class unless you've already taken calc before.

8 hw assignments that are due every two weeks. Lenient on late work. 6 quizzes, he drops the 2 lowest scores. 2 midterms. 1 final exam. He is kind, and makes jokes during class. But he can make a lot of mistakes, sometimes. He wants you to use his way of solving problems, not what's taught on YT. So pay attention during class. DO THE HW, DONT COPY

STAY AWAY. Lectures are confusing, rushed, and full of mistakes. Grades WAY too harsh. You must do perfect on nearly every assessment; impossible from the way he grades. Writes FAKE reviews of himself. I feel I was tricked into taking this class bc of this. As someone who has a 4.0 and who studies hard, this is your sign to stay away at all costs.

Avoid this professor for college. He is insensitive, dismissive of students' struggles, and focuses on unimportant material. His exams are overly difficult, grading is harsh and inconsistent, and he treats students unfairly.

Vargas is the worst teacher I've ever had. He constantly makes mistakes in lectures and study guides, never responds to emails, and I had to rely on the tutoring center for help. No partial credit on tests. My class average was 52%, with many withdrawals. Avoid him at all costs. Im retaking the class with a different teacher because of him.

If your fresh out of highschool and decide to take this math class for Calc 1, dont bother. Lectures a lot, 99% of the notes come out of the textbook, and doesnt really teach but rather tells you. Test heavy, lots of HW, literally any other teacher is better. You know its a bad teacher when 90% of the class drops out.

Took him for calc one and dropped it before the midterm. He's just a terrible teacher, there are enough reviews detailing why. He's terrible at explaining and reads straight from the book. He left me more confused than if I had tried to teach myself from the book. Take Zipstein or Carver if you can.

Don't take his class please, and don't try to find out for yourself how bad it is. He doesn't understand he is affecting his students' academic careers literally forever. He seems like a good guy, but doesn't accept how bad of a professor he is, so he hasn't and won't change. I dropped his class in Oct and still feel this strongly about him lol.

IT IS SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND CALCULUS THE WAY HE TEACHES IT LITERALLY CANNOT TEACH FOR SHI Class started out with 40 students on the first day. On the day of the final (last day), the class was only down to 10 students remaining. Says a lot about him, doesn't it.

I came back to write another bad review about him because all the good reviews are lying. I had extremely smart kids in my class, smart enough they knew not to waste their time in his class and withdrew right away. Dont bother taking him, save your time, there are MUCH better teachers than this guy, insane how awful he is at his job.

took 4a with vargas, absolutely horrible teaching. was confused the entire time and was failing the class. dropped it and took it with a different professor this semester and i got an A in the class. to whoever is reading this: its not you. professor vargas is an incompetent teacher who will ruin your transcript. you CAN do it, but not with him.

Took this class last year and came back to write a view because of how awful his class was. The lectures are terrible, with lots of mistakes and not enough correlation to the quizzes and tests. Tests also include content that's not on the homework. The extra credit was only 10 points out of like 500 total, yet I didn't get full points. Continued..

Continued review from below. I meant to put I would NEVER take this professor unless it's the only spot left. My extra credit answers were composed of answers from various credible sources and this stingy professor didn't give full credit. He marks test questions wrong with multiple streaks across the entire paper which shows he hates his students.

I decided to ignore his low ratings… DONT. I took 3A over the summer and got an A but when I tell you, his notes are incomprehensible: he is scribbling on a whiteboard (often correcting himself) with a marker that's drier than the Sahara desert & the whole lecture felt like a toddler with a box of crayons teaching calculus to his stuffed animals.

Worst professor I've ever had in all my years of college. It was an online class and he was rarely accessible. All of his lectures are pre recorded, very long, and not clear. Only available for 2 hours 1 day a week if you meet him on campus. Zero empathy for anyone's struggles, both in school or personally. DONT TAKE HIS CLASSES! You'll regret it

He has been teaching for more than 10 years, and yet had to borrow his own student's notes for his lecture

Lectures moved very fast, and it was difficult to keep up; he'd also keep jumping from one concept to another with little to no explanation. Needed to do a lot of self-studying to stay on track.

this guy seems very unprofessional. constantly uses "i think" or "probably" shows uncertainty in his own work. started with 40 ending with 9 ppl. terrible at explaining, he spent 30 mins fixing his own problem that he couldn't solve and did it next session. do not take him. worst prof for math ive taken in my life. tests and quizzes are ur grade
