he makes class really easy and he helps you alot on all of your work. Show some effort and you can talk him into an A. he wont let you leave early though so you have to draw the whole 2 1/2 hours
Awesome professor! Nice and funny and extremely helpful. Not a lot of homework either. He's probably one of my favorite professors. I highly recommend him! Oh...but don't wait until the last minute on the sketch books...
i love Professor Ward! he is the best drawing teacher ever. im taking his class right now and so satisfied with homeworks and projects that we do.
I learned so much! He grades on technique rather than if the product's finished or not. You'll have a sketches, and you'll always have one large scale for the weekend. You'll also have in class drawings (technique is how he grades so don't be worried) He's also very nice, talk to him if you're concerned about anything and he'll help you
Ward is super nice and a lenient grader. I had him for life drawing, and he grades on effort and technique and gives specific advice on how you can improve. I really enjoyed his class and felt like I was learning a lot in a comfortable environment.
I absolutely LOVED this guy! I took him for life drawing and I learned so much! His teaching style is very hands on and effective. During critiques, he never makes you feel dumb and always tells you how to fix something in a constructive way. Definitely take him! Especially if you're not the best at drawing...
Incredibly helpful and really knows his stuff. It's ok if you don't get it, he'll explain again and again till you do. He asks how everybody's doing at the start of every class, genuinely caring. Jokes around with you. He's great! I'm taking another class with him next quarter at 8am - that's how awesome he is that I'm willing to wake up so early.
Definitely my favorite professor! He's super nice, funny, and really interacts with the students. You do have to work though. I'm not going to lie. But he makes you WANT to work and do your best. I'm definitely going to take him for Drawing 200 too. Take him! No doubt.
Really great teacher who wants you to help you improve your drawing skills. He spends time with you if you're having trouble with an assignment until you get it. You can tell he actually cares about his students. His class has a great atmosphere because he jokes around and plays music while everyone is drawing. I definitely recommend his class.
Ward is an amazing professor. Very clear on projects and gives plenty of time to finish them. I personally hate waking up early but he kept the class awake with pandora guess that song games. Definitely recommend if you can't draw well. He helps you if your struggling and loves to joke around with his students. It made the classroom environment very enjoyable. Definitely recommend him.
Totally awexome. I actually learned about drawing.
Ward is the best. He makes learning to draw easy and fun. His class was totally worth waking up at 7am for. I highly recommend him.
Ward is Generally a nice guy and has an inviting aura about him he can teach well and isnt a bad professor per se but he doesnt really have interesting in helping the students who are struggling he tended to spend most of his time talking to the students who were clearly already talented at drawing while ignoring the students who needed help
Before Professor Ward's class, I'd never even attempted to draw before. By the end of taking him for both Drawing I and Drawing II, I had the basics down relatively well. I enjoyed taking his class, he's very approachable and helpful. He grades based on your own capabilities and effort, if you can't draw he's not going to expect masterpieces.
Awesome teacher! Very fair grader, and doesn't expect you to be a Da Vinci--only that you work hard. He plays great music from Pandora during class and will help you in any way possible. I would definitely recommend him.
Ward is an awesome teacher! He is tough-ish, but I learned sooo much. All projects are due at midnight, so if you couldnt get it there for class or were absent, its really helpful. He plays great music in class, gives helpful feed back, and is an all around really nice guy. I would definitely recommend him if you want to grow as an artist.
Harsh grader, expects a lot. Nice guy though.
Awesome prof! Great personality and easy to talk to. I Had him for draw II and took him again for portrait. Makes you want to work hard and create good art. Grading is accurate, if you put forth the effort and he sees a difference then it will be reflected in your grade. Take him!!!
Everyone seems to rave about him, which is why I took his class. I consider myself a good student and earned an A in the class, but I had a lot of frustration with him. He is much more interested in talking with the students work that is already exceptional than helping the people who have only mediocre drawing skills.
I recommend him to anyone wishing to gain confidence in their drawing skills. He's a funny guy and very personable, I really enjoyed his class and the atmosphere he gave the group. Also, he grades in a completely fair manner and gives constructive feedback. Go Professor Ward!
Prof. Ward was absolutely awesome! His style was so fantastic. He explained every assignment in detail and even walked us through each supply needed (never had that before). he was very involved with all of the students and was extremely accommodating and patient. Recommend as highly as possible... a perfect 10!
I cannot express just how much i enjoyed this class. Professor Ward made me love drawing, even though the class was at 8am. He plays AWESOME music on pandora and really cares about his students. He'd always take the time to give individual feedback and help if needed. The projects are really fun too!
Literally the only teacher I will take drawing with. He is engaging, challenging, but understanding and helpful if you fall behind. His classes follow a great progression through what you will need to complete his projects piece by piece. Funny guy, always involved, and honestly cares about his students more than any teacher I've ever had.
He's a very lively professor who is very helpful. Even though, I don't like the mediums we're using in the class, I still find it to be enjoyable.
Best drawing professor at scad. I took him for drawing II, Life drawing, and advanced portrait drawing. His classes are fun, full of information and great opportunities to develop your skills, and he is great about knowing when to help and when to leave you. His classes are challenging, but as much as you put in you get that back ten fold-RECOMMEND
I love Professor Ward! He takes the time to know his students' names and he recognizes their skill level coming into the class and really grades based on effort and improvement. Super chill guy with a fun sense of humor, I can't recommend him enough!
Great guy! Only foundations drawing teacher worth taking. He'll ask you to actually put in some effort, but it will be worth it in the end. Very helpful and engaging.
He doesn't give the rubric for each of the assignments until after he's done grading, which made it hard to figure out if you were doing the right thing or not. Very tough if you don't put in the time outside of class. He's very helpful though. He also has a portrait class that I hope I'll be able to take.
Was good at helping everyone when he had a chance. Doesn't give anyone any extra credit or more points then earned (no curves)
Hands down one of my favorite professors here. He is extremely helpful, patient, and willing to answer questions. First half of class is instructionlecture (very clear), second half is drawing (Always makes it around to each student 2-3 times per class.) He gives wonderful feedback and a fair grader. He will set you up for success! TAKE HIM!
Great professor who cares about students' learning. Tough grader but clear on criteria. If you want to learn, take him. If you want an A, don't take him. Funny guy who will make jokes about students, only for fun. If you can't take jokes, avoid him. Don't skip class - many in class assignments towards end of quarter. Out of class work at start.
Professor Ward (aka Neb) is awesome. He comes by each student a few times to make sure everyone is on the right road, makes soon-to-be-dad puns, and really understands where each student is coming from. He opens up instantly and is a great guy. He's great as a mentor and as a professor. His critiques are insanely helpful, but you've gotta work.
The toughest grader. If your drawing isn't photo realistic you didn't get an A. Not very helpful when you're just starting out. No good for anybody who doesn't have drawing experience/ability.
Professor Ward was a joy to have as an instructor. He was always helpful and it was very fun to listen to and joke around with him. I'd love to take him again, He is my favorite teacher so far.
Really funny and relatable. He wants to help you and will always wave if he sees you outside of class. Assignments are VERY time-consuming. If you put in the work, you'll get a good grade. The text is boring, but he tries his best to keep lectures entertaining. Reference memes a lot, sometimes incorrectly, but I appreciated the effort.
Fantastic Drawing professor! Even if your major does not have anything to do with drawing he can be of great help. Workload is reasonable but challenging, and he gives excellent feedback while working and with critiques. Highly recommended!
Professor Ward is awesome! I went into SCAD with absolutely no drawing experience and he was unbelievably helpful and understanding. He does make you work for an A -- but the skills you learn in his class will help you immensely. He's also hilarious and has the typical dad sense of humor. I would love to take another class with him again!
I couldn't have asked for a better experience in a drawing class. He is by far one of the best professors in the foundations department. He assigns a lot of work, but it's toward the betterment of your skills. He gives each student individual attention, which I haven't seen a lot of professors do. Definitely take him!
Nice guy. Amazing artist. Infuriating grader. It's not at all fair or realistic- the best artist in the class could have the same grade as someone whose portrait looks nothing like the model. He doesn't give any high grades out easily, and he'll switch up his criteria like *that.* BUT, your art WILL improve, especially if you start out poorly.
Great teacher! He actually helps you and my art improved ten fold! Of course, you gotta work for it but it's well worth it. Would take again.
Don't pay attention to the poor reviews, though there are very few of them. Professor Ben Ward is one of the best professors I've ever taken, and I graduate next quarter. He has a great attitude, is understanding, really knows his stuff, gives good individual critique, and he's not one of those professors that "hovers" when you're drawing. 10/10
Professor Ward is amazing! Not only will you really learn about the human body, but you're gonna have some laughs too. If you aren't familiar with drawing humans, don't worry-- he will give you the help you need and will always reward your hard work. By the end of the course you're guaranteed to make huge improvements. Definitely take him!
By far one of my favorite professors. He's genuinely cares about your progression in his class. Every class he makes it a point to come around to each student at least twice to give individualized attention. By the end of his class, I really saw improvement in my drawing. He's also just a generally great and funny guy, very easy to get along with.
I took his sketchbook class in Lacoste. I hate drawing, but he was really awesome about helping me find my style and helping me develop it more. He is a classic dad, he does the dad jokes, dad style, dad care. Take him, gain another parent.
Students raved about this guy, he is talented, but does not truly care about the outcomes of each student. Only in it to feed his ego and get a pay check. Ps: leaves early during extra help sessions.
GREAT Professor! This has definitely been my favorite drawing class! The Professor is a great artist and you will learn a lot from his class. Gives good feedback and really pushes you to do better. Your drawings will improve greatly in this class if you put the effort in. Don't miss class!
I feel like a completely different artist after leaving this class. Professor Ward is just a great guy and will really help you individually improve. He is a tough grader, but if you show him that you're working hard you will usually get a B or above. Overall great, funny guy who cares about his students.
He made it clear that he did not like me from the very beginning and regardless of the fact that i was no majoring in anything remotely related to drawing he expected me to draw like those who did, but cut others a slack. I don't know if this was simply personal but i would not recommend him as a teacher. No exceptions you wont make an A
My favorite professor at SCAD! He is very funny and caring. He grades on a very strict rubric so if you follow that for each project you will do well. He is always open to help you do better! I would highly recommend!!
gives no feedback on what you did wrong , grades unfairly and is at time rude, making an A is impossible
Professor Ward made my life impossible he is a horrible teacher who makes his lectures short, leaving the student to learn and perform to the highest of his expectations with little to no guidance, tough grader
Professor Ward was one of my favorite professors of the quarter. Not only is he hilarious (bring on the dad jokes) but he's a really great teacher. I went into this class without being able to draw and I feel that I have improved SIGNIFICANTLY. He teaches the class as if no one in the room has even heard of drawing before. His feedback is excellent
Benjamin Ward is a master and not only a top notch instructor, but overall human being. He cares for his students and their progress and development as people. To pass his class, dont miss, follow the rubrics that he gives for each assignment and most of all, give 100% effort on each assignment. He likes the effort and it reflects in your grade!!!
Hands-down one of the best professors at SCAD. He is incredibly talented and helpful to his students, and makes things very easy to understand. He is a father, which does translate to kindof a "dad" personality in the classroom. But it is very comfortable and encouraging. If you do the work, his class is easily a favorite.
Professor Ward is very clear with his expectations and would provide individualized attention for each student as we were working in class, which was very helpful. I was terrified of drawing, but he was able to explain it in a way that made sense. I decided to take him again for DRAW101 because of how much I liked his class. Loves dad jokes.
Great professor, cares about you as an individual and your growth as an artists. It doesn't matter what your major is he will help you understand basic art concepts that can play into any form of art. The work was moderate but if you pay attention and drink the kool aid you will get better! Definitely recommend, he is pretty laid back and funny too
I was very nervous coming into this class because I can not draw AT ALL but he really helped met! He is very funny with his dad jokes and he was very helpful with everything! I would definitely take him again! But just a warning if you don't do the work or skip class you will fail, the work load could be a lot but nothing extreme
I took Benjamin for a sketchbook class and he helped me realize my potential. He is a caring professor and has an interest in each of his students well being. I can't wait to take him again.
Focuses mostly on students who excel. I struggled and his feedback was vague. I put in a lot of effort and went to him after class for further help and offered no affable feedback. Seemed like a nice guy, but spent more time perfecting talented student's techniques than helping those who struggled. If u can draw ur fine if u can't take someone else
As long as you put in the effort and work hard, Professor Ward will appreciate it. He's pretty easy going and has a ton of dad jokes that make you cringe but also laugh. All of the projects are pretty difficult, but if you work hard on them and put your fullest effort towards it, he can tell. He is also super helpful if you ask him for help.
An absolute gem of a professor, especially virtually. Almost half of every class was dedicated to volunteer critique, and his demonstrations were posted online afterwards for our own reference. Was very sweet, and I genuinely looked forward to his class. The class would chat during work time and it really felt like being in an actual class again.
Professor Ward was a great professor, I just struggled tremendously in his class. I never got excellent grades on the projects but I put my back into every project, spending hours upon hours doing ten quick sketches each week. He is a tough grader for sure. He is very kind and offers help but for me, it wasnt always helpful.
Prof. Ben is a very nice guy but I just couldn't fathom the hardship I underwent. During critique, he tends to focus on the people who talk more in class. I didn't have a working mic at the time so usually by my turn we always run out of time. Communication was my biggest issue. I also broke my back working but somehow never meets his expectation.
Professor Ben is overworked via too many students /trying to balance working as an illustrator. He is a fantastic artist and he knows alot about drawing than anyone but trying to learn from him is difficult because unless you're already in the illustration department or already are amazing at drawing you're going to get graded for your inability.
I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND his classes. His demos were so awesome and inspired me to try harder! He was really funny and his class was extremely engaging. Even the student examples he showed us made me want to step it up and really push myself. I definitely prioritized his class over all of my other classes. SUPER GREAT PROFESSOR!!!!!!!
I went into this class having no experience with perspective and intermediate knowledge of anatomy. Came out being able to draw an environment in 2-point perspective whenever I want now and understanding the muscles inside of the human body. Ward is both hilarious and a great professor. Its a lot of hard work but he makes it worth it!
Prof. Ward is first and foremost an amazing artist, and it gets you inspired to learn from him. He's tough on you, but not hard on you. He will push you and it will feel like the hardest class you've had yet. He cares about his students' progress and is actually really funny to boot. I'm grateful for the opportunity I had to take his class.
Ward is great and speaks in gamer terms (side quests, difficulty modes). I learned a lot, but you gotta be on top of your work, or else you might fall behind. I took 2 other studios besides this one and it wasn't too bad. He gets distracted sometimes but never too off-topic.
One of the kindest and funniest professors. Very knowledgeable and gives good advice/instruction. Quite a tough grader so there is no slacking in his class but it really made me push myself and in turn I think I improved substantially!
Clear grading criteria, super funny engaging class, and projects which you can take a lot of liberty with. Would take again. His criticism is fair and on point.
Ward was very encouraging/helpful throughout the quarter. None of the assignments felt like busy-work. He gave us plenty in-class work time and gave great individual feedback. His assignment criteria was clear and he provided examples. He is a relaxed but professional professor; loves to make jokes and memes but can be serious when he needs to be.
I love taking classes with Ben Ward. He is very knowledgeable and gives great feedback, but is also just very kind and understanding, making him pleasant to work with. He can be a bit of a tough grader, but only to push you and your skills, never in a condescending or unreasonable manner. I highly recommend taking classes with him.
I was worried because everyone said Prof Ward was a tough grader, but he really isn't. Just follow the rubric and put in the effort and you'll be fine. His lectures are great, very informative (and punctuated with dad jokes). The only thing you have to be careful of is time management because he assigns a project that took me 7-10 hours each week.
The workload is kind of heavy, but he definitely gives useful feedback on every progress report. He also has long enough office hours for students to get help.
Advocate for yourself! Stay after class if you don't get something or you want extra feedback, go to extra help sessions, raise your hand for critique no matter how bad you think you did on the homework. This class teaches you so much and he's one of the best professors I've had here. Make the most of this class and your art will improve so much!
Please dear god take Mr. Ward's class if you want to actually learn how to draw. Each week he would teach us in-depth muscle groups and we'd have to draw 10 fleshed-out examples of the muscles discussed in class, my understanding of anatomy has improved by 2x at least. TAKE THIS CLASS also he's hysterical and the class is always a bit rowdy and fun
Ward is a great professor. He is highly knowledgeable in anatomy and the rendering of it. He does his best to keep everyone engaged. If you want a comedy show in every class, take a class with him.
Ward is easily one of my favorite professors i've ever had the pleasure of taking. He makes tons of dad jokes and hilarious banter. Super caring and gives good feedback. Made sure to help every student succeed. It's a lot of work, but certainly worth it. He gives realistic grades, which might come off as tough for some students though.
Professor Ward is one of my favorite professors at SCAD. He's really funny and just has dad energy. I was able to really grow from his class and my sense of anatomy and perspective has greatly improved. His class was a lot of work, projects due each week with anatomy studies so you really have to put time aside to work. Even so, I loved his class!
professor ward is a great guy, super nice and funny and is always down to joke around in class. the class itself is very content heavy, so be ready to work, but he makes it very accessible and gives clear demonstrations on how to draw anatomy. can be a tough grader, but it clearly comes from a place of him wanting you to improve and succeed
If you get the opportunity to take Ward's class, DO NOT pass it up! Not only is he hilarious and easy going, but the contents of his lectures are top notch. This is a fast paced course with a lot to cover but his lectures are incredibly engaging and he clearly wants to help us succeed... he provides great feedback and solutions when you're stuck!
I love this man. His class can be very challenging at times but also, I feel like I've genuinely learned so much from it. He's super silly and will regularly do vocal stims during lectures that the rest of the class echos and it's kind of a funny way to keep everyone focussed. Benjamin
Professor Ward is the best professor I have had thus far at SCAD. He's skilled, considerate and always willing to indulge in a good bit. The energy in his class is light and his lectures are engaging, informative and punctuated with shockingly knowledgeable references to internet culture. The projects are tough, but so worth it. Take this class.
Ward is an excellent teacher. He does a great job creating an engaging learning experience. Just to let you know, he makes a lot of Fortnite references. Besides the Fortnite stuff, there aren't any negatives to taking his 160 class. Just make sure you ask him questions and ask for feedback if you struggle to understand the assignments.
I struggled a lot with perspective before Prof Ward's class, and he finally made it click for me. He cares a lot about his students and is willing to work with you if you need help. Time management is important in his class as his projects are time consuming, however I feel like I improved so much in this class. He is also hilarious.
In my humble opinion, best professor at SCAD. He connects with and cares deeply for his students while also teaching a rigorous and effective course. My art tangibly improved with each passing week. I've never been excited to wake up for an 8AM before taking Professor Ward's class. Every good review he has is deeply, deeply deserved.
If you have the opportunity to take Professor Ward, do not pass it up. He has a great attitude and is enthusiastic about teaching. Even if it's an area you struggle in, he wants to see you succeed. If you're willing to put in the work, you won't fail.
