Never reachable outside of class. Smart, just doesn't know how to teach. Quiz and test questions unclear and require assumptions not stated. Consensus from my peers is they aren't learning anything from him. His class is mandatory. I'd consider taking it elsewhere and transfer an econ class in as a replacement.

Worst professor ever. In class he seems to explain to himself, nobody can follow him. The whole class fails every test, so he has to round me the grades. Poor teaching skills and lack of interest about the student.

Wow. The class more so than the professor is what is so bad. I am a Senior with a 4.0 GPA (before this class) and created an account on Rate My Professor specifically for this course. I am literally telling you not to take this class. The material is not only hard to understand, the professor is so smart, he has a hard time explaining the concepts.

I took this macroeconomics class after taking microeconomics and receiving an A. Im currently enrolled in his macro class and concerned about even pulling a B. His class is 2 tests and a final. The tests are vary difficult due to his horrible lectures, he is boring and frequently late. In order to do well in this class you MUST read the textbook!

He gives USC's Econ department a bad name. This is supposed to be a capstone course. group presentations (followed by an online quiz) once a week and a final paper as our final exam. A week before finals and he posts quizzes on group's presentation. He also added an attendance requirement (x discussion board posts) with a month left of class

This is by far the worst professor that I have ever had in my whole entire life. He is awkward, boring, and it is painful to go class. You sit in the lecture hall and can not grab anyones attention, is extremely mono-toned and tries to make these references to things no one has ever heard of before. He urges people to drop his class.

He is probably the most boring professor at the University. I have fallen asleep in class more than I have been awake because he goes off on tangents that are pointless. Do not take him if you can but definitely do not take as an 8:30

If he is your only option, I would suggest that you teach yourself/study with the homework and take your time on the 3 exams that you will take in that class. I personally feel like they were worded in a way that was much more difficult than it needed to be.

I took Coffey's class and failed. I retook it and got a C, mainly because I taught myself and did the homework. This class has the most boring and pointless lectures I've ever had to sit through. Our class made a groupme and just taught each other the material. Personally, I learned nothing from this professor.

He was consistently late to every class. His lectures were boring and did not clarify anything. On top of that, he writes his own textbook. He was extremely unhelpful when students asked him questions and it took him 5 business days to answer emails. My class taught each other everything. Would not recommend.

I thought I was going insane taking macro because I wrote 30 pages of notes yet I felt like I knew absolutely nothing; turns out Coffey just doesn't know how to teach. I went to every class, read the entire textbook and copied almost every word and still struggled. The questions on homework and tests are nothing like what he gives us in lectures.

Coffey has been by far the worst professor I've had at USC. His lectures are extremely pointless and will not help you on the tests. He also writes his own textbook so that will not help you either. It is virtually impossible to learn anything in this type of environment. The homework questions on Tophat do not match the material covered in class.

His lectures were not the worst. However, they were pointless and had little correlation to the test. The tests are based off of readings and homework questions. So if you do not do those you won't pass. Seems to care a little in the classroom but it does not show when taking test or communicating with him. Look for other options before Coffey.

Professor Bentley rambles about useless and unnecessary information that has nothing to do with the class. Good luck trying to email him with questions, he only got back to a single one of my emails. During the Covid crisis our exams continued to get harder, while he would just post the chapter slides, no lectures. Basically had to teach myself.

This should not be as hard of a class as it is. It is a hard class because you will not learn anything during lectures that have relevance to the exam. Rarely will he even respond to students emails, It's like he does not care at all. If you cannot register for any other Econ classes but his, just try again next semester it's not worth it trust me.

He's not fair, wants to see his students fail, and is just not a pleasant professor at all. He puts minimal effort into his class and it shows by the lack of quality of his lectures. Hopefully USC wakes up and sees him as a problem and does something about it . Embarrassment to the business school.

Professor Coffey seems to have his own way of explaining things that makes no sense. His exams are extremely difficult and don't have anything to do with what he discusses in class. The textbook does not help either because he wrote it... so you pretty much have to learn everything yourself. He does curve grades, but you still have low grade after.

Just completely sucks in every way. Terrible lectures and awful tests. The class average on tests were so low because he couldnt teach at all. DO NOT TAKE HIM! He teaches from his own textbook so he is literally just reading the textbook and expects you to understand. The tests were extremely hard and not on relevant information. The test averages with curves were still nearly failing. You cant even go to the Student Success Center for help because all the tutors all quit bc he is so hard

TRUST ALL THE REVIEWS! He was terrible. You only take two tests before the final and that's it. You also have homework which is easy and a small percentage of your grade but the tests will weigh you down if you do poorly. The TA gives a study guide but look at it and study anything that's not on it. The study guides were the least helpful thing.

Worst professor I have ever had. You do not have a real textbook but one he made himself through TopHat. He is a nice man but a terrible teacher. He cannot dumb himself down in ways that you can understand. He is terrible at putting grades in. He does curve exams but only because all the grades on them are so terrible. Do not take him if you can. Worst class ever. Had two hw assignments due at the very end of the semester but graded them super early so a lot of people had 0's for hw for a while. Tests are incredibly hard and had a 20+ curve. Told us about a group project a week before the due date and made it due during finals. You learn nothing. Avoid this man!!

Dr. Coffey is a nice guy. The good stuff stops there. He is a horrible communicator, which is a crucial element of college. My emails rarely receive a response. His project expectations and instructions are incredibly unclear, which led to a lot of confusion for everyone in my class. He has a great mind, but should never be allowed to teach.

Dr. Coffey will teach one thing, then test you for something completely different. When he reviews the tests with the class he consistently finds mistakes he had made while writing the tests. This resulted in very little being learned from the class as well as incorrect grades for most of the semester

Professor Coffey does a terrible job covering the in class material. The are parts of the exams that are not in his lectures or in the textbook. I understand there is a lot to learn in macro econ, but he covers so little in class. Reading the textbook and attending SI sessions is how you pass his exams. He curves well, but thats it.

Easy to get lost in the lectures bc he doesn't explain it very well. He curves the grades bc nobody can understand what's going on well enough to get above a 70. Use Khan Academy for this one alongside the lectures and you'll be fine

Dr. Coffey is the worst teacher I've taken at USC so far. He's either way overqualified to be teaching intro to macroeconomics, or he just doesn't care about his students. We had two tests before the final, so our grade completely depended on them, but luckily he curved these tests 40 points. Attendance is not mandatory but he gives pop quizzes.

He is a good guy and is overly qualified. But he can't teach and lectures are long and hard to understand. Only 2 tests and a final but he curves them a lot because everyone fails.

He is a decent person and knows a lot on economics, but as intro econ class he is way overqualified and not the person to take. You have to work way to hard not to fail.

This man drove me insane. None of the tests are over his lectures, he has terrible communication, and terrible attendance to his own class as well. He talks about things that don't even relate to economics and is really unhelpful in figuring out how and what to study. The only way people pass this class is from the massive curves he gives.

If you value your mental health, DO NOT TAKE COFFEY'S CLASS! If you are in a situation where you find that he is the only professor left when registering for classes take the class another time. His lectures are long, pointless, and boring. He also has a hard time staying on task. He is always late and his exams don't ever add up with lectures.

If you are okay with teaching yourself, then go for it, but I'm sorry Coffey sucks! His exams are confusing and with his high failing rate, he feels the need to apply a heavy curve on everything. In a way that's good, but I can honestly say I have not learned ANYTHING in a full semester. ANYTHING!

I'm a senior and he's the worst professor I've ever had

had him for macroecon and he is awful. He canceled class more than we had it and it was always VERY last minute and no explanation. He is rarely ever at office hours and his lectures have nothing to do with what we need to know for tests. His tests are beyond difficult and I rarely even had criteria to study that was related to what we tested on.

Worst and most unorganized professor I have ever had. I took the final exam 6 days ago on top hat and somehow still have not received a grade for the class yet. Teaches about anything other than macroeconomics in lectures and is impossible to reach outside of class. If you see that you have him please do yourself a favor and drop the course.

As a freshman taking this class, I have to say professor Coffey was the worst. Went to every class, took meticulous notes, studied weeks in advance for our tests, and ended with a C in his class. This is the only class I took where it literally didn't matter how much I studied, I just never did well because his lectures are NOTHING like the tests.

I took prof. Coffey as part of my exchange semester at UofSC. Knowledgeable on the subject, but generally unmotivated and boring lectures. Lectures are painfully structured with a few text-heavy slides. He often goes on unrelated tangents. Generally strict grading, you have to do pretty well on all the exams to get a good final grade.

He cancels class alot with little notice. He only lectures and goes on random tangents. The lectures were not helpful for the exams.

Amazing guy, really nice, but his lectures have nothing to do with the exams, and the material he teaches is way above an introductory class

Will be at least 5 minutes late to every class. 80% of class grade is tests. Tests do not match material taught.

Econometrics is already a hard class coming from anecdotal experience from my peers. Taking it with Dr. Coffey made this class near impossible to understand. Need to be proficient in calculus and stats before the class. Be prepared to do some coding but not necessarily knowing what exactly you are coding and why you are doing it that way.

Good luck if you plan on taking this class. I go everyday and still do poorly on tests. I solely rely on the curves he provides.

Honestly has to be the worst professor at USC and I'm not exaggerating. He cancels class on short notice, shows up late all the time, and goes off topic all the time. Dr. Coffey gives long lectures that have barely anything to do with his exams. You are only graded on 3 exams and homeworks. I try to be nice when rating professors, but this guy is not cut for the job. They're constantly late to class, teaches material barely related to the tests, all while rambling about his life. I think the guy just needs a therapist.

This man is always late or doesn't show up to class with no warning. His lectures are so boring it is hard to pay attention. Also, the lectures don't match the test material.

Dr. Coffey was consistently late to class and completely skipped class without telling us. He only started showing up on time when someone complained to the Dean of Econ. Lectures ramble and he doesn't do a good job preparing you for the test. He'll answer questions in office hours but doesn't respond to emails and isn't great with explanations.

I was a straight-A student until I took this class. I love economics, but Coffey is the issue with this, not the class itself. He needs to be teaching upper-level classes, not introduction courses. Hands down the most unorganized professor I have ever seen. Showed up late to everything, canceled class, and curved all the exams everyone failed.

If you have the choice, take a different professor if possible. This class had absolutely no structure and no clear objective. There was no in-depth explanation of key concepts and for it being a "math" heavy class, he refused to do any practice problems or give examples during lectures. Bentely Coffey is the worst professor at this university by miles. He shows up 30 minutes late to almost every class, teaches his own version of economics, and is severely unqualified. When explaining concepts, he goes on tangents about his personal life and writes all over graphs making it impossible to read. This class made my life hell. -9000/10

I honestly don't know how this professor is still employed at the university. Taught myself everything through tophat and the other teacher's videos posted on there. He does not get through review before exams and the practices tests are not like the tests at all. He does curve exams because the average is low.

He makes inappropriate comments in class referring to his exwife as his baby momma spends more time in class telling unhelpful, stupid jokes rather than teaching us the material When the class doesn't respond he pauses the whole lecture to say that we hurt his feelings

Doesnt teach well no one goes to class cause its not helpful all tests are on lockdown online but taken in class during class time, if you can take someone else you should. Everyone just taught themselves the material

If this professor is your only option for the class, take it at community college. Exams do not align with material given on class lecture slides. A lot of the people in the class had to drop. Only plus is that he heavily curves exams because so many people do poorly.
