All she does is lecture ,but before tests she has a review and will pretty much give you the answers to the test questions. She give out the test questions as long as the class has a B or better average on the tests.
She is a good teacher. The tests are on her notes ONLY and you have to be prepared to write very fast. Classes are very interesting. She hates people talking in class. Loves chocolate.
Need to be able to write really fast to keep up. Tests are all out of her lecture. The vaguest details might be what seperates letter grades. She is very helpful to her students. Write anything down about New Zealand. Tough tests (essays) but nice teacher.
Ms. Vlachos is nice but she does have an attitude. She will give you the first test questions to take home but the class average must be a B in order to get the next set. She is extremely picky so beware of taking short cuts.
evil lady from new zealand! she lectures TOO much TOO fast. gives the test out to study with and then takes point off when you have every answer right for grammar and abbreviation. hello? history not english! bleh
She's a character and has interesting takes on parts of history. She may come off as being difficult, but the class is easy if you attend and do your reading.
She may rattle on and seem like a real tough one, but if you need help and go to her office, she helps. Be the one who doesn't talk and actually takes notes and you will A-ce her class. I just kept to myself and studying with the study questions and I did WONDERFULLY!!
I really liked her alot. As long as you pay attention in class to what she talks and about take notes from that you'll get what is on the test. She even gives you the test questions a week ahead of time to give you time formulate your answers and up to the day before the test she'll look at your answers.
She is an amzing teacher but you HAVE to have a tape recorder because she talks so fast. She ests directly from her notes so don't bother buying the book.
I did not like her! She was cool, but she was not the most professional.
She is an AMAZING teacher. Before this class, I hated history, but I never wanted to miss this class because she made it so interesting. The tests are completely fill in the blank but she gives you the test a week ahead of time, plus, she meets with you before the tests and reads to see if you have the right answers. She grades pretty strictly.
Absolutely loved her! she's the most easiest teacher in the world!!! just go to class every time, write down everything she says, dont talk, and you'll make an A!!! she even gives the answers before the test and if you can't pass a test that you already have the answers to then plz, u might wanna consider a job that doesnt require education!
This class is no cakewalk. You HAVE to record the lectures. She will give the questions to the tests ahead of time but is very particular about the answers. Learn as much trivia as you can about New Zealand. It will serve you well.
I really enjoyed the class and learned alot. I loved her approach to history. She is not typical. She is an amazing person! You have to attend class. The tests are soley based on her lectures with maybe a few readings from the book. She is very picky about the answers. She does give you the questions before the exams. I would take her again!
Her tests are a bit challenging but she is very fair.
I thought she was a cool lady. Once she warms up to the class (2 weeks) it becomes much cooler. You have to come to class to pass. She lectures 99% of the time, and tests are based on the lectures. She wants EXACTLY what she lectures on, and won't except other answers. Tests can be difficult. Exempts from final if you have an A going into it. 7/10
You have to be really lazy to not pass this class. She is really fun and interesting. Some people misinterpret her sense of humor and some think that she is mean but she is actually very helpful and nice. The test are hard if you do not study. Record the lectures. It will help you tremedously
Very hard test! she was very hard to follow because the accent. To do well you need to record her. I wish I would have
She's from New Zealand and has a bit of an accent, but its easy to get over after the first class. If you can't write quickly, tape her class. lots of info on exams, but she will give you the questions about a week before and spend a class going over info (individually). NO MAP STUFF!!! Lots of info covered (Mesopotamia through cold war in 14 wks)
**Warning** Do Not take this professor. This clas is more of an English essay class than a History class. The exam is ALL essay and if doesn't matter if you get the answer right BUT that you write what SHE say word for word. If you don't have good memory DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Trust me. Heed this WARNING!!!
Ok here is the story, She talks sooo fast. YES! You will need a tape recorder because she gets a attitude if she has to repeat anything and many ppl. in the class will not raise their hands including myself. Don't sit in the back because her accent is very strong and you cannot hear her! She is no walk in the park teacher and you will earn grade!
Very Good Teacher - will work with you on the answers for the test. Will give the questions prior to the test. Alot of memorization - just have to have an outline. Loved her.
GET A DIGITAL RECORDER! You can leave it on her desk and collect it after class. The test comes straight from her lectures and she provides the questions about a week in advance. Write down word-for-word what she said and you'll get an A. Spelling is not a problem; only when answering the New Zealand question. One cool professor! Take her!
She really knows her stuff... and expects you to know it as well. If you're really into history, she is the perfect professor. She is very helpful when questions are asked. Make sure you take good notes AS WELL AS record her classes because every test is verbatim what she says. Her class was enjoyable!
She gives you everything just like it should be and when she says d give her d and not dee. If you can do exactly what she wants and pay attention you will do great in the class. Really not too bad ended up learning alot from the class. Good teacher.
DO NOT TAKE HER. The class is awful! The tests are essay and VERY detailed. I would not recommend her, no visuals, nothing online you basically have to record her to learn anything. Take prof Zander!!
her tests are completely from the lectures. You should get a tape recorder for the class, it will make note taking easier, and you can get all the points on the test with all the information. she knows a lot of about the subject and i enjoyed her lectures, even though they could be boring at times
Invest in a tape recorder immediately! There's no way humanly possible to get all the information down in her lectures because she goes really fast and talks in generalities. Its very clear what you need to know in the study guides, but its a lot of material. If you're good at memorizing and you have a recorder, take her class! If not, don't!
Ignore every other comment and listen to me. Get a recorder for this class; plan to be there almost every day. No book required. You don't have to pay attention because your recorder will do the job for you. Don't forget to get in study group after she gives you the test questions. Answer every question using your recorder with your group. Memorize
Everyone keeps making noise about how you need a tape recorder to pass her tests, but I didn't and I got an A. She's a brilliant lecturer and a good teacher. Her tests are detailed, but she gives you the questions before the test and basically all you have to do is memorize. The essay questions take some practice beforehand. I'd take her again.
Be ready to take notes but she gives you a copy of the test as a study guide....make sure you know everything on the study guide.
This is the worst teacher I ever had. As a Junior I didn't have classes so hard and I took her for a freshman class. She doesn't make notes/powerpoints/or anything. She just sits and talks. You'll need a tape recorder. Gives you test questions, but if class doesnt do good on test she stops. Wouldn't recommend her to anyone.
BUY A TAPE RECORDER!! She just sits and talks the whole time and there are no notes. You have to read the book and go to class to pass the tests which require a blue book and a lot of writing. Any extra credit is on New Zealand since she is from there. She isn't much help either and doesn't seem to care about helping her students. Wouldn't take her
I wish I had listened to the comments before I took this class, she is a terrible teacher. FYI: If you do not write or record /understand every single word of the lecture "b.s." and can correctly reiterate the exact verbiage on the test you will fail. I honestly didn't learn anything...at all. PLEASE HEED MY WARNING: DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Not so easy
She is amazing!!! It is like going in and listening to someone tell you the story of history. You do need a tape recorder, but a lot of the time my information was in the notes I took in class. She seems like a real hard nose but she is super nice and cares about her students. I would take her again!!!
To be an entry-level course, the tests are way too difficult. But if you take a lot of notes (meaning everything she says) then you should be able to pass. She's generally a nice lady but has no tolerance for talking in class or tardiness. Overall, not too bad of a class.
Vlachos rocks. She's a college lecturer in the old school sense. Once she warms up to the class (2 weeks) it becomes much cooler. You have to come to class to pass. Tests are based on the lectures. She wants EXACTLY what she lectures on, and won't accept other answers. Tests can be difficult. Exempts from final if you have an A going into it. 7/10
You have to bring a voice recorder. She flies through her lectures! She gives you the test questions so you can memorize the test. If you are good at that, you will do fine in this class. She is extremely picky about her tests and doesn't use the book. I managed a B in the most difficult history class I've taken! I say pick someone else...
This class requires a voice recorder. Prof. Vlachos teaches history as if it is a story and you pretty much have to tell the story back to her on the test. She speaks very fast so taking notes is difficult. Attendance isn't required, but if you want to do well you should go. She is a lot nicer than people thinks and is always willing to help.
This teacher is awesome! I have never learned so much in a History class before. She is not boring and helps you learn in a different light. You do have to attend every class and take really good notes on her lectures, but she does allow you to use a tape recorder as a supplement. Take her class if you aren't afraid to take a lot of notes.
Vlachos is awesome! If you show up every class and take good notes you'll do fine. Tests are straight from the notes, no textbook needed. Sweet lady once you get to know her. I love her New Zealand accent!
Awesome class. First history class I enjoyed. She presents everything like a story rather than a lecture. GET A VOICE RECORDER! She moves very very quickly. Record the lectures, take notes, study, and you'll make an A and learn something.
Take excellent notes!!!
Perhaps the worst History teacher @ Kennesaw. As a Senior I have not had a harder course than this Sophomore level course. She gives the class the questions to tests, however if class scores fall below an A she will no longer do so. Questions for help are referred to the book, which is not graded from. DO NOT TAKE HER, your GPA will regret it.
Ms. Vlachos is a fun teacher who seems to know a lot about the material she is teaching. She sits at front of classroom and talks the whole time, and is usually pretty funny. She has inclass questions usually every day and three tests the whole the semester. thats all that is graded. Dont let her catch you texting either
This lady is awesome. She tells history like she's sharing a story. She doesn't use technology at all. Her tests are pretty hard- all essay, with tons of info. However, she gives the questions to the class. I would recommend her. she is very funny, but super strict!
Do not cross her and she's ok.
This class is extremely hard. The tests are all essay and she talks very fast which makes it difficult to take notes. She does give you the questions for the test, but if you don't have the answers in your notes-good luck. Plus, she is very picky about what the essays should include. I would not recommend this class.
She is an amazing teacher. She knows what she us teaching and if you don't do well it's your own fault. She gives you the test questions and allows you to go over your answers with her. She'll tell you what you need to know for the test. Also, you must get a voice recorder for her class. I would record class, go back and write out everything that was said. I made an A in her class and loved every moment.
She is a 'PMSer' if shes happy one day, then you will have a nice class, but if she decides to feel bad, then run. Yes she gives you test questions. but even if you have the write answer you won't get full credit because somehow you have to guess exactly what SHE would want. which changes day to day. I would definitely not take her again!
Will cancel class without notice. Tests are hard (mostly essay format) did not use textbooks all semester. Interesting class, but challenging.
If you HAVE to make a good grade in this class, DO NOT take her class! Although she is interesting, her tests are extremely hard and you must know exactly word for word what she wants! BUT if you want an interesting class and dont mind ALOT of studying and note taking, this is your gal. GOOD LUCK!
I was pretty sketch prior to taking this class, I read all the reviews and was intimidated. The truth is, she is NOT that bad at all. Go to class, make some friends, take notes, and attend the reviews and you'll be fine. It is a LOT of memorization but it's really not bad at all. I was worried as anything with this class and i ended up making an A!
She is very interesting! You'll take three tests in her class, the third being the final. If the class maintains a B average on the first test, she will continue to give the test questions. My class did not but she had us complete an assignment on what needed to be done to improve the average and then she gave us the questions.
She is just horrible really...I wasn't interested in history when I came in and would rather commit suicide than to take her boring boring class again. Who cares about New Zealand??? And here it is 2 days after grades were due and nothing posted!? wtf? Her tests are ridiculously hard for a freshman level course and she isn't lenient AT ALL.
I read the reviews prior to taking her class and got pretty much what I expected. A very serious & intimidating teacher. She knows her stuff, tends to be a little biased, but expects you to learn the material. If you don't take good notes you'll be screwed. BUY A RECORDER FOR THIS CLASS!! Tests are hard - but you get the questions before. I got an
She is hard. She definately knows what she wants from her students but if you take good notes and attend her class along with doing the study questions could should do alright. If you're not a good student and don't really care I would not take her though.
please run for your life donot take this prossor. i will repeat donot take this professor. she isone of the worse i have come across.
She sits and lectures. She is interesting and she does not repeat herself, so be an excellent note taker or BUY A RECORDER! Show up for the reviews, make a support group to get the right answer and study. Keep the class average over a B and you get the test question prior to test and review where she tells you if your answers are right. EASY A!
You have to attend every class.all the test questions are given in 100% oral notes. You have to be able to type or write fast, but it pays off. she will give you the test questions the day before the test. test is 100% essay, memorize the questions and answers and you will get an A.
Go to EVERY class, record everything using a recorder, memorize the test and you'll do great. She's pretty intimidating but if you talk to her she's VEREY helpful and will work with you to understand what she wants on her tests. It really wasn't that bad
On her tests you need to be very specific about your answers and do not put just one example. She counts off for stupid reasons. She does not get specific about answers until you get the test back.
I dropped this class, because she is the most unfair grader of all time. I got a 71 on the first test, dispite showing more than 90 percent of the material. Her test are in essay format, and the questions she asked did not go with the answers she wanted. In short, she needs to go back to New Zealand.
This is supposed to be an entry level course and she teaches as if it were a graduate. All she does is sit and talk, no presentation of any kind. She doesn't use the book and you have to be exact on the test which is essay format or else she takes off for stupid stuff. The worst professor I have ever had.
Don't let the other reviews keep you from taking Professor Vlachos' class. Yes, the class is challenging, but she is available and eager to help any time you need it. If you earn them, she'll give you the test questions, and in my appointment with her she literally gave me answers for the second test an hour before I took it. I'd take her again. :D
This teacher is very strict in class but extremely friendly out of class. If you have a question all you have to do is ask and she will give you the exact answer. If she cant she will tell you where to find it. Show up to test reviews and your bound to pass. Only complaint was it was all talk, not many interactive things. RECOMMEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The mixed reviews are due to people who wanted an easy A out of this class. She's not going to hand you your grade, so if you're looking for minimal work, stay away. If you want an interesting class with an wonderfully interesting professor, this professor is for you.
Good professor, great class. no presentation, lecture class. she has a good sense of humor and is very engaging outside of class. do the work she asks for you to do and you will do fine.
This was a pretty straightforward class-attend the lectures, take very good notes, and you will succeed. Take this class if you want to learn from a teacher with the rare kind of passion for her subject that makes an unforgettable learning experience. I only wish that she taught American History, or any other History class!
She is not easy, but not difficult either. All you have to do is to go to class regualarly and pay attention to everything she says. Rarely used the book.
She will not hand you your grade. However, history is my least favorite, I went to class, took notes, and briefly studied for the test and made an A. She is very helpful outside of class. She's quite witty, as well.
Bring a recorder, and you'll make an A.
Her Class is no walk in the park.. Its a great deal of information taught and the way she teaches its is better then any other. She tells a story. BUY A RECORDER: No handouts, no notes, no powerpoint ALL LECTURE... She gives the questions to the test and if everyone passes with 80% of higher give questions to the next test.. I got a B..
Not an easy class. All lecture, and she only allowed the first two rows of the room to use laptops, so bring a recorder.
She was one of the easiest professors I've ever had. If you come to class and take notes you will pass. She gives you the questions that are going to be on the exam so you can have them to study...seriously it can't be any easier than that.
She has a unique way of teaching the subject that keeps your attention for the entire class. Don't expect an easy A though. It's all lecture and the tests are mostly short answer/essay. She does give out the questions a week prior to the test if the class maintains a test average of a B or higher. Invest in a tape recorder, for sure. I made an A.
Great professor. Buy a tape recorder, take good notes, find a quality study group. It's not an easy class, but I learned more in this class about history than any other history class I've taken. The tests are based entirely on the lecture, so come every day. This was one class that I wanted to go to every day. I wish she taught more classes.
Tape recorder is very useful unless you take great notes. Give questions b4 test and will go over your answers with you b4 you take the test. Tests are from the lectures and most are short answer and few are paragraph.
This Professor is horrible. Her attitude towards students is very ugly and unappealing, thus it makes focusing on learning especially difficult (except her occasional 'pet'). She seems to be trying to overcompensate for a lack of teaching ability. I would NOT recommend this professor, especially if you actually want to enjoy and LEARN history.
I hated history until I had this professor! She knows what she is talking about and shows an interest in what the students know. Sit in the front of the class, take great notes, go to class, and study. Super easy! She is open to review outside of class too! She does in class questions that don't count off but are basically showing attendance. LOVE!
She makes you learn it, not just memorize to spit it out on a test. The class is very difficult and she's hard to follow but very clear about what she wants from you. Show up and do the study guides and you'll be ok. Whatever grade you get, is the grade you earn. She makes you work for it, so be prepared to WORK. NO PPT's. She lectures, you listen.
She's tough, and the class consist of 3 test one being the final. In class (which is a free 10%), and a paper. You HAVE to study. She is very nice, and helpful outside class. Her constant demonizing of the USA, and American jokes are a bit much sometimes.
TUH! Where can I start? She IS the worst teacher EVER. Her attitude is revolting, and narcissistic. We lost privileges to our next test because a FEW people failed. I remember I answered one of her test questions right and she STILL marked it wrong. I dont even know why she is a teacher. DO NOT TAKE HER. She doesnt care about her students.
Professor Vlachos is a great professor. It's a lower level course and the people how give her bad reviews just don't want to do the work. I'm a freshman and I came to college knowing that work will be giving, it's not like high school. If you do your work you will be fine. Plus she has a nice accent :) Loved Loved Loved HER!
she is AMAZING!!! In her class, you will know that you are in college to learn. Very challenging but there is no way you would leave this class without learning and retaining information. History became more fun for me with her class. make sure you have a tape recorder. she is a true historian because she does not use handout. its in a story format
Love her. She's tough. Bring a recorder. All tests are essay, but she gives you the questions to the essay in advance and goes over it. She's big on concepts, not so much specific dates. She brought history to life and I enjoyed the class. I usually hate history classes, fyi.
She eats and breathes history. Absolutely fascinating. Definitely difficult to get an A on the tests if you don't have all the needed content in your answers, but she gives help when you ask for it. I definitely recommend this professor if you can get some information about her from someone who's had her before so you know who she tests. Thumbs up.
Awesome Professor! She's a walking history book. Doesn't use text book. Make sure you bring a recorder. Very helpful. Start writing essay as soon as she hands it to you. She will help review if you finish it early. Not an easy A but if you work for it, it will be worth it.
Amazing professor!! Skip the book and buy a recorder, but take notes too. Very enjoyable class. Will give you the questions prior to the test, but only if the class keeps a B average. Three tests and one paper are your only grades, so keep up. She grades tough, but fair. Don't goof off in class or she will throw you out. Love her!!!
This woman is literally a walking history book. She is even writing her own textbook. If you record her class and go back and listen to them and write everything she says, you will do wonderful on her test. She has in class assignments everyday, so attendance is a good thing to keep up with. Don't buy the textbook, buy a recorder
I love this teacher so much! She made history so interesting to me. She is very opinionated but hilarious. Don't buy the textbook, buy a recorder because she just lectures with no powerpoints or anything. Also the recorder helps because she has an accent and it's hard to understand her sometimes.
vlachos is a great professor. her lectures are straight from her brain, so be prepared to write/type fast or record. 3 tests, a paper (1,500 words), in classes for attendance, and a primary source event (very easy). gives you the questions on the test based on the class average for the prior test. take notes, study, and you'll do well.
Class Not Mandatory, but you NEED TO GO TO CLASS & record her lectures! Test study guides are given, exact to test material. If you are struggling in the course, let her know and she WILL help you and your class grade!!!! Very sweet and easy going if you show you are actually trying. Her lectures are interesting and she has funny jokes!!
I would not recommend this teacher. Did not seem like an introductory class. The tests are short answer and paragraphs. She was not clear on the test guidelines and how one should answer the questions. If you wanna spend your valuable time constantly studying for this class instead of focusing on your important classes you can take this class.
Every class, she will talk. No online notes, not written notes, IT IS ALL ORAL!!!!!! She tells you exactly what will be on the tests, but you have to write it all out EXACTLY THE WAY SHE WANTS IT. She has a slight accent, but she lets you record her lectures to go over later. Overall, I would recommend her.
She knows her stuff and is a very interesting person. She gives you the questions to the test but if you want an A you need to go to office hours because she grades really tough. She talks really fast so you can't write everything she says but she wrote the book so if you buy the book it is everything she says in class.
you're going to have to work for the grade. her lectures are oral, i strongly suggest recording it because she talks very quickly and there's no way you can write everything she says down. you have 3 tests, 1 paper, 1 final. the tests are hard if you don't study. she usually gives you the test questions ahead of time but sometimes she won't.
Prof Vlachos expected us to memorize centuries of wars, dates, and people and write novels about them. She is an extremly tough grader. You will earn any grade you get. NO extra credit. However, she does gives the test questions a week before the test, but it is still ALOT to remember. I would not take her again
3 tests and 1 (1500 word) Paper. She does not use any type of power points only oral lectures. Record her lectures its the only way you'll be able to catch everything . Extremely tough grader.
Professor Vlachos is an extremely tough professor. She is a fast speaker and gives no handouts or powerpoints to follow along with her. It is essential to record her lectures to catch everything. She grades tough, but is fair. Whatever grade you make in the class you will earn. She is hilarious with her anti-america jokes. I wouldn't recommend her.
I do not even know where to begin with this teacher. Worst teacher I had in a very long time, if not the worst. All I will say do not take her class if you care for your GPA.
I love Professor Vlachos. She's SO understanding and kind. Lectures are key to passing. She wrote the online book. It goes hand in hand with lectures. SHE WILL HELP YOU WITH YOUR GRADE IF YOU ASK. You must work very hard for your grade, but SHE GIVES YOU THE TEST QUESTIONS AND LETS YOU ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT THEM. Essay not hard AT ALL. A+++ professor
The content isn't difficult, but the way she grades is. She only teaches what she thinks is most important in history & grades the same. Example: Q:What happened in 1941? A: Pearl Harbor. Incorrect, Germany invaded Russia. Even though both are correct, she will only mark you write if you're in sign with her opinions of what is most important.
Loved her! As long as you pay attention in class and take notes, you will do well.
I liked her as a person, but not as a professor. I didn't like that she used her own online "book". And even though she gives the answers to her tests, it's too much to memorize when you are taking harder upper level classes. It's unrealistic to retain the info she presents through memorization. Also be sure to record her lectures on your phone!
She is tough, but this is college. Not a babysitter. It is time to grow up. I love the way her class is ran. If you have questions ASK. Turn in homework without her telling you or get zeros. She does talk fast about the material. (Record her) she mentions things not in the book, but goes off of it completely. Must take online quizzes. Love her
You have to buy her online book (helps with the tests), 3 tests, 1 final ( like the other tests), collects in class notes every day, small homework assignments, 1 short essay, gives question for her tests but you have to find the full answers by yourself, grades very tough, she is funny and cynical and I like her but I would NOT take her again
Really knowledgeable. Make sure to record her lectures because she teaches from the top of her head. She wrote her own textbook for our class. TAKE NOTES!!! Keeps up with attendance by having mini quizzes throughout class. Sarcastic and funny, but blames you if you do poorly. All tests are HARD and formatted 30+ essayshort answer questions
It is a difficult class if you're lazy or don't attend. No powerpoints so show up and write down EVERYTHING she says. She, however is very interesting. I took her 8am, never missed a class. ASK ASK ASK ASK for help, she gives it as long as you prove you paid attention. IF you lose the test questions buy her chocolate and apologize as a class.
She WILL give you the questions to the tests but they are all open ended. Some are up to 2 paragraphs a piece. She refuses to answer any questions in class about the tests. You have to go up personally to her and she will say, "We discussed this in lecture." I fully understand this is college, but as an entry level, this is beyond ridiculous.
As a person, she is very interesting. Her class is not. You HAVE to buy the book, which she wrote. All of her lectures are verbatim from her book, but you must attend class because of her daily assignments. There are quizzes in her online book you must take, that she doesn't mention and will fail you on if you don't ask her about them. DO NOT TAKE!
Textbook was for reading homework only, not even related to class. She isvery strict as a grader. She isn't mean per say, but she will kick you out of class in a heartbeat, even if the situation is misunderstood. Hard tests, one paper, lots of pointless homework. She is intresting to listen to, but hard to learn from. All lecture style, no visual.
This was the hardest I've worked for a B but you can get an A if you are willing to try. You just need to read the book, come to class, memorize a lot of information for each test, record the lectures, ask questions, and most importantly write the full length responses for the test questions that she gives you ahead of time and actually study them.
I absolutely despise history classes, but loved coming to this class. I'm not usually one for mandatory attendance, but you have to go to her class because she doesn't upload powerpoints. That being said, it was a pleasure listening to a true historian go on about different subjects. Honestly, one of the classes I miss the most.
I neither like or dislike this professor. DO NOT text in her class, she WILL kick you out. Her tests are in paragraph form, no multiple choice, and are strictly graded. She tends to go off-topic quite often and skips from one time period to another quite randomly.
I ended up dropping the class. She lectures for the entire time, which would be fine if it were organized, but it's not. She's a nice lady, but her teaching style just is not for me. If you want someone with solid structure, she may not be right for you.
Three tests, a paper, final and a few homework assignments here and there. Her lectures are interesting but the tests and final make a large portion of the grade you receive. Make sure you study and form study groups, no way to pass without them. It says the textbook is required but we didn't use it once
She is a very nice character and good at entertaining the class. However, she has little to no structure in her class length lectures that jump all over the place. This really hurts if you need to study for a test and look back at random bullet points of notes. Tests are tough and she hardly takes time to prepare the class for the tests.
Good teacher
Vlachos is a hilarious teacher who makes class fun every day. She is from New Zealand, so there's an accent. She gives Two Tests & A Final. THE QUESTIONS FOR EACH TEST IS GIVEN OUT 1 WEEK BEFORE THE TEST; THE STUDY GUIDE IS THE TEST WORD FOR WORD! Recording devices can be left on her desk for each lecture. NO REASON NOT TO PASS/GET AN A.
Two tests, a final and a term paper. The questions are given 1 week before each test and a review session the following class day where each student is allowed to go up to her desk and ask one question from the test (not the New Zealand questions). Memorize the questions and answers to get an A. Do not buy the textbook
All of the tests were free response but she was very strict as to how you answered. She gives out the test questions a few classes before the tests and then does a review day the class after where students can ask her one question each so it is best to work in a large study group.
If you leave out one little detail she was expecting in the the free response tests it seems like you get penalized heavily for it. I went from making like a 98 in US history to a C, and with no less effort, that shouldn't really happen. If you're trying to watch your GPA then take someone easier, if you're ok with a C the class isn't terrible.
She let's you record lectures which helps because she expects the answers on the handwritten exam to be word for word. If you record the lectures, do the essay and go to every class you should get an A no problem. I sent her emails I never received a response to so don't bother contacting her that way. Do not buy the book. Did not use it once.
Her class is a really hard class, but something about the way she told the stories made history a little less boring for me. She is tough, but it was worth having her class.
