can be boring, but as long as you go to class and take notes, you will get an a
Easy, but gives his own political views. At least he's not a communist.
Really enjoyed having him for a professor. Gave interesting lectures on a not-so-interesting topic.
One of the best profs in the History Department. Can make crappy topics interesting, and he's one of those profs that seems to know everything! OH, and he sighs for effect during lectures.
He knows sooo much. He's not horribly exciting, but he's easy to listen to. He's a good prof.
great lecturer....make the boring seem interesting - had him for 2 classes and enjoyed both!
Had him for a discussion based seminar for majors. Knows his stuff, good at directing discussion, affable. Very helpful in making research suggestions for term paper.
very good teacher who knows his stuff, a lot of fun to listen to.
one of the best professors endured here at the university of pittsburgh. love this cat. i recommend him to everyone.
You gotta have this prof! You gotta have...
Dr. Hagerty is extremely well educated, and makes these classes sooo interesting. Plus, it's a lot of material, but he never expects you to remember EVERYTHING. It is all extremely fair.
Great lecuturer and teacher. Makes boring things interesting because he really enjoys the topics. Tests aren't that bad and the reading is easy. Take him if you get the chance, one of the better hist prof.
Amazing Prof, especially good in non-survey course.
He cares a lot about the topic and seems to know a lot, but has really annoying mannerisms and his essay tests are too long and nobody finishes them
He's a great professor and very nice and helpful.
he's very interesting and knowledgable. not a very hard class, definately worth taking.
His class is moderately easy. It requires you always attend lecture because the tests are almost fully lecture based. Tough on grading the tests too. Fun class though, very interesting
great speaker... very interesting
Very easy class as long as you go to class and take notes...the midterm and final are all written essays, but on the final, he lets you bring in one piece of paper with any notes you want written on it...and he grades really easily
i will say he is definitely the most enthusiastic professor i've had, ALTHOUGH i don't know if he is always correct. He carries with him a lot of biases that are interesting, but as facts theyre confusing. If for nothing else, he'll keep you interested. Just watch out for validity! 2THUMBSUP!
Nice guy but just comes in and talks. The TA did everything. However, it's an easy class and pretty interesting. Not too demanding and gives you a chance to relax, learn, and have fun. Reccomend him.
Unbelievable teacher. Probably one of the best at Pitt. Makes a boring subject really interesting. Go to lectures and pay attention(which is easy to do with him) and you'll get an A. No need for book at all.
Awaesome. You dont even need to go to class cause your papaers are based on original ideas. But hes cool and very interesting so you acutally might want to go to class.
easy class, gives list of terms to pay attention for, so the lectures are easy to follow, fair grades, interesting prof
EXCELLENT! Talented lecturer; able to keep class engaged and focused on Pre-1750 history at 10 a.m.; I honestly enjoyed every moment of his class - didn't even mind waking up early. His enthusiasm is infectious. Friendly, approachable, concerned about students. Easy, yet you will learn SO MUCH.
awesome, very approachable, makes every topic extremely interesting
I love Professor Haggerty. He's the nicest guy you'll ever meet and he's really passionate about what he teaches. Really approachable and friendly. Plus, he loves when you tell him he's wrong. Not many professors can say the same. If you get a chance, take anything else with him, he's a good guy.
Open minded when it comes to papers. Explains everything out for you to understand.

Seems nice but honestly I had no interaction with him whatsoever. His TA graded everything and explained the big concepts in recitation. She was great. He defintiely was a good teacher and taught well but if you get a bad TA things could have been different. My experience with him was completely positive though.
Lectures are fun to go to. He explains things with a passion and is very knowledgable, plus he tells you what you need to know, no useless, pointless stuff. Only grades are one termpaper, one midterm essay and one final essay. No quizes and homework is very optional -its all reading, but its not madatory for success. Great guy, loved his class.
Was one of the best professors that i have had here. He actually learns your name unlike others and he is easy to talk to and learn from. A very passionate speaker who cares about what he is talking about.
Awesome prof, awesome class. If you need a history requirement, take a class from Hagerty. He is a great speaker, the lectures are exciting, and he's probably the nicest faculty member you'll meet at Pitt. Best teacher I've had so far, hands down.
Great teacher, I had him for my seminar and Irish in America. So cute with the way he makes himself laugh. Really interested in the subjects he teaches. No tests, just papers. Do your research and back it up and you'll have no problem.
Professor Hagerty is da man! He makes lecture interesting by being passionate and having a sense of humor. The only problem with the course is no courseweb. Tests are easy if you know how to write.
Take your seminar with Haggerty. The class is fun, and the readings and discussions are interesting
Not half as bright as most people think he is and does not know as much as he thinks he does. Students are being patronized by Bernie Hagerty in ways they do not understand.
very helpful, great teacher, extremely knowledgable
Very nice guy. VERY passionate about history and VERY knowledgeable. I would take him again.
Hagerty's pretty cool. I had him for the senior seminar. The discussions were awesome, and he's open to hearing any and all opinions, plus he's very outgoing and can be funny. Grades fairly, and is very understanding if you need help or special accomodations. Definitely recommended.
Fun, good lecturer
Hes a very good teacher. I'm not a history person but he makes it as if hes telling you a story instead of teaching you history. Always willing to help! Quizzes are very easy if you read and grad student grades the papers but very fairly it seems. No tests, just 2 book reports and a final paper. Definitely take him if you get a chance!!
Boring lectures. Mandatory attendence bc it's not necessary. I got a perfect on a quiz I didn't even read for..just made stuff up. I'd take it for an easy history requirement. Paper sucked though. I did it on alcoholism because I was taking an alcoholism class. If i hadn't been, it probably would have been hard because Iused class to do other work.
Engaging, storytelling voice in lectures. Cares about his subject. Grading seemed fairly easy. Very nice person and friendly. I would take him even if you just need a requirement.
If you like story telling, then this is the class for you. Makes a class that had no potential one that was very bearable, if not more that that. The exams are pretty easy as he tells you what is going to be on them. Probably the only class I have taken so far where I am not constantly looking at my watch to see how much time is left....
Excellent professor. Makes every lecture interesting and entertaining. Very good at facilitating useful discussions. Clearly he enjoys what he does and knows a lot about it. Sort of tough grader, but has useful comments.
Irish in America. Great class, wonderful professor. This class is the reason I became a history major. Lectures had nothing to do with the quizzes or papers, but Bernie made it fun to go to. Sets one class aside for Irish music, dancing, and other such fun. Great guy, still talk to him when I see him in the History department.
Excellent lecturer. Ended up doing a decent bit of writing, but I can't say I mind it too much. If you are strong willed in you're arguments and provide good evidence he's a pretty good grader (even if he doesn't agree with you). Highly recommended.
very interseting class and topic matter. relaxed enviroment and open for discussion.
nice guy, good lecturer. fairly interesting subject material. TA does all the grading. he's pretty helpful with things and enjoys working with students.
Prof Hagerty taught my Writing Seminar, US-British Relations. The course is demanding only in that you are going to be writing CONSTANTLY. But, I have to say I've improved more as a writer in his class than any other. He's incredibly helpful and holds wonderful discussions. Willing to let you explain your point and willing to clarify his.
Such a wonderful professor and nice man. Also, very understanding if issues occurs. I had printing problems the day my final paper was due and he let me email it to him. There are papers due almost every week, so the class can be demanding at times. Also, classes are mandatory! Other than that, I enjoyed and recomnend the class.
Professor Hagerty is awesome! Lectures are mandatory but he keeps them interesting. Sometimes he gets off topic but he always ties it back in. I'm taking another course from him because I liked him so much.
This course is a total joke. I feel terrible saying that, because hagerty's a nice, likable guy...but the course? Ha. Not an easy joke either. The assignments are juvenile and the expectations impossible. Book reports, "note quizzes" that you Surprise! are told day of you can't use notes on. Lectures ramble, uninformative. TA does all the grading.
He is clearly passionate about the topic of xenophobia in modern europe. however, there is no pressure to really pay attention to what he is talking about - even though most of it is very interesting. His TA is not very helpful, he does most of the grading though. The inflections in BHs voice make his lectures about certain topics seem overdramatic
AMAZING PROFESSOR! Nice guy. Easy class, but TA sucked (he did the grading). No tests, all reports/papers. Turned in my final research paper 4 days late on accident but he didnt take any points off when i explained. In class notes on paper topics are the only ones you need. Highly Recommended.
Entertaining. Tries hard and is likable. Work is hard but TA's are helpful.
Great Professor! Ended with an A. Takes attendance. Tests on the * vocab words he gives you. Expect to write essays. Only a midterm and final but they were mainly essays he gives you the prompts before the test. Mainly just remember you can't completely blow this class off when it comes to studying for tests. If you study you'll end with an A.
He was a cool guy, he was really interested in the subject. Class was pretty easy and he always gave study guides for the tests. I had to study for two solid afternoons for the three tests-- one of looking up the terms, another memorizing them. Solid class
Dr. Hagerty is the man! I had no interest in British history before taking this class but he made it fun and interesting. Only papers, no tests, and he is extremely helpful in deciding research topics. Highly recommended!
Amazing teacher! Very knowledgable about the information! No exams, just 3 essays and a final essay, all of which are very flexible in their topic. I enjoyed learning and going to class. He replies to emails promptly and is very helpful. He's very enthusiastic about history and makes it fun. Absolutely one of my most favorite teachers and classes.
I really love Bernie's Vikings class. It's not even his usual area of expertise, but he amazes me with his vast knowledge and endless enthusiasm. He's such a fun, engaging professor. The lectures seem to fly by. So far, we haven't been assigned much, and the TA is a fair grader. Would love to take more classes with him in the future.
Dr. Hagerty is the man! This is my third class with him at Pitt and I wish I had time to take more! His tests are easy if you take notes in class, and he takes attendance, which counts for a significant part of your grade. But his lectures are fun. He has a lot of useless knowledge, but it makes lecture funny. He also sings, which is fantastic.
Bernie is a tough grader, but he makes you a better writer. His lectures are great. He cares about what he teaches, and it is so obvious how much he loves teaching. He is interesting, funny, and very helpful. If you are unclear on something or need help with a topic or a paper, he will help you during his office hours.
The Capstone in US and UK relations is a great class, and it is student driven. Bernie facilitates conversation, and says why he picked each book you read, but then the students spark the conversation. He interjects, but mostly lets students talk for participation. He is a tough grader, but the assignments are fairly easy.
Absolutely my favorite Professor at Pitt by far. He teaches extremely interesting topics with a ton of depth. His lectures are long, but they're thought-provoking and funny. He sings (beautifully), the tests aren't too difficult, and the students are always eager to participate. I wish there were more professors like him in my major.
Bernie is a great professor if you enjoy honest, down-to-earth history. He makes history significant and humanizes the people in the books. Relatively easy - he cares more that you participate and ask insightful questions and learn something. He has also been known to sing or play guitar in class, and he lacks no talent there. Nicest guy ever.
Professor Hagerty is very popular amongst students, so sometimes meeting him for offices hours can be tough. However, if you schedule with him in advance there should be no issue. Hagerty is one of the best professors I've had! His lectures are extremely interesting. The readings enrich the lecture experience and his papers aren't too bad.
Professor Hagerty is so passionate about what he teaches and it shows. He makes the material enjoyable is includes many personal stories that relate to the topics he's teaching. There are papers so if you don't want to write a lot I wouldn't take this course.
Professor Hagerty is just amazing. His lectures are enthralling; to use a cliche, history truly comes alive. He wants his students to succeed immensely, and will help as much as he can. I found myself looking at what classes he's teaching next semester just so I can have him again. HIGHLY recommend him: any class he teaches will be a great one.
A really great professor. He can sometimes get a little tongue tied but it's because he's so passionate about the material. He goes out of his way to make lectures interesting and is an approachable guy. Attendance is mandatory but you don't have to pay attention at all- the only assignments are book reports. I would take this class again.
Lectures are not mandatory but I would advise going because he uses material different than the book and he likes when you use that material in the essay tests. There is a midterm, final, book report, and participation in recitation grade. The midterm and final have essay components as well as vocab short answer. You can miss one recitation.
Very good lecturer but the course covers a lot of material. Grading is all done by the TA's so the difficulty of the class is largely dependent on them. Prompts for the exam essays are given a week in advance and key words are given for each lecture. The course can be an easy A but requires a good amount of work.
I took the Irish in America class and western civilizations class with Bernard. I love him! Great professor, very knowledgeable, and interesting lectures. Definitely go to class, since he doesn't put any notes on courseweb. Tests are pretty easy as long as you study. The Irish in America was my favorite class and he is by far my favorite professor.
Hagerty has a remarkable depth of knowledge on most every topic he lectures on. The stories he tells serve to supplement lectures and make them interesting. Very clear as to what material is going to be on the test and so studying takes 1 hour max.
Obvious passion for history & full of so much interesting info. Very friendly and easy to get along with. Lecture is mandatory. Learned so much valuable information, but he never repeats anything twice. Gives a list of key terms to help students follow each lecture
Bernard is a great history professor here at Pitt. He is extremely understanding and willing to work with students. His assignments are straightforward and he makes his expectations clear. His lectures are very informational. I would take him again.
This is an easy class to take as long as you don't mind writing some papers. Professor Hagerty is super friendly and obviously passionate about his work.
bernie greatest professor at pitt. he offers a st. paddy's day concert and loves ireland. best way to do well in the class is simply to engage when he asks "are there any questions?" 2 book reports and 1 final research paper are the only work for the class (potential pop quizzes - none yet!). given notice every class about due dates. my favorite.
Bernie is an awesome lecturer! The highlight of the class was St. Patrick's Day. He organized musical performances, which was a refreshing way learn about Irish/Irish-American culture. He ended up skipping the quizzes he planned on and have us all 100% quiz grades! Overall, fun class.
Super nice guy, easy class. But if you don't like being bored or taking this as a gen ed, don't take this class. It's easy and all you have to do is write small papers but I was extremely bored the entire semester.
Good professor overall. Lectures can be a bit boring but you are not tested on them. The class is graded by 3 small 5 page papers and one 10 page final paper. Start the final paper early as it is a huge time suck. Nice guy overall and the readings aren't too bad.
You have to pay attention during class and study or you might not do the best on exams, but Bernard is a gem! He is the kindest and funniest man and makes learning about vikings kind of fun (even though some days are still boring). It is not necessarily the easiest gen ed to take but if you are interested in history, you would love this class!
If you're a history nerd, you would eat this class up! I personally am not, so lowkey I thought it was a little harder than what I was looking for in a gen ed. Bernard is the best though, he makes it as interesting as it can be. Great guy, would recommend.
Event though attendance was mandatory, the lectures didn't really count toward your grade; however, Professor Hagerty is incredible at story-telling and keeps you captivated the entire time. The main assignments are book reports on books of your choice, but you don't have to read them in detail to get a good grade.
Basic history class, but only interesting if you love history and listening to lectures. The class has two tests and a paper, your grade depends on your TA (they grade). The book is NOT necessary to thrive. Easy class to finish gen eds, but only fun for history majors.
Dr. Hagerty is awesome. Incredibly friendly, nice to talk to, and you can see he's passionate about his field. This class is a perfect gen-ed. You'll learn a ton without being buried in work, which is rare among these classes. There's just three 4-6 page papers and short weekly discussion boards throughout the semester. You won't regret taking him.
Dr. Hagerty was a passionate professor who very much enjoys teaching. He doe not use powerpoint slides, but if you attend class, you have a good understanding which helps with the recitation assignments. You are graded on three papers, recitation, and participation, but is not difficult to do well if you participate and go to class.
He loves the topic, and hes a very cool and interesting guy. He does go on tangents, and doesnt use slides. His TA for this class was not in the department and he confused me on what we were learning sometimes, but Hagerty himself is so cool
Great guy, easy course, did it over zoom but learned a lot
Professor Hagerty is retired but teaches some classes now and then so if you get the chance, you should take it. He doesn't use slides or anything but makes lectures super interesting. Only grading was done through papers and they're interesting to write. Highly recommend.
I thought this class was definitely geared more towards history majors/minors, but Dr. Hagerty was one of the best and most passionate teachers that I have had. He is a fantastic speaker and is the real deal. Awesome guy who clearly has a passion for teaching. I would take a history class again just to have him as a prof.
Dr. Hagerty finds the course material he teaches to be enjoyable, so it's easier to enjoy the material yourself. His lectures are told like stories. But he is entirely anti-tech. He does not allow any electronics in the classroom, even to take notes. When writing notes by hand, it becomes very difficult to follow his winding stories.
very kind, accommodating, and knowledgeable professor. the class might be a smidge harder than your average gen-ed if you're not into history but anyone will be fine as long as they study a bit. his lectures are great. there are no slides or anything though, so don't skip class
