Mr O'Donnell is a great english teacher and cares about his students. He loves what he teaches and wants everyone to understand as well... is always willing to help!
he was a really good teacher, he joked around alot and made class fun. he graded all of the assignments very fairly.
He's very sarcastic, but in a good way. His humor and jokes made class easier to sit through. Overall, a pretty good teacher.
He was a great teacher and glad I had him.
I didn't really like Mr. O'Donnell. He played favorites, was intolerant of any ideas other than his own, and has an ego that his intellect can't really back up. I'd avoid...
Favoritism towards students, angered by students that don't agree with his strict way of teaching, no depth to analysis of texts and overstressing of the same points, didn't learn one thing while in his class.
Not a very good teacher, I agree with the previous comment. Plays favorites and continually stresses the same ideas. No clear grading method: lots of check marks with no point system.
Interesting guy. Not overly knowledgable and a bit arrogant. All the same not a bad teacher. Ask him what battery he like's best (Probably Duracell, argue Energizer's better! Back it up with whatever bs you want but argue, he likes to argue. also, ask him about his band. he's in a band. Oh yeah!) Surefire way to get an "A"!!!
ENC2305 w/ Prof. O'Donnell is an experience. Stressful, but if yr willing to put in the effort you'll get an A. Will spend A LOT of time working on the group papers. Has Mock Trials but they don't count towards grade - lots of work for smthing that doesn't count. Evrythng is v personal. Learned a lot from this class, but would not take for GenEd.
Professor ODonnell is an outstanding professor who really cares about his students. He is a little bit of a tough grader but if you actually want to take something away from this class then it will be worth it. He is also accessible outside of class if you ever have any questions. I learned alot from this class and I recommend it anyone in prelaw
Professor O'Donnell was honestly the best teach I have had at UF so far. When I first read these commnets about him I was scared to take his class but he turned out to be nothing like it. He gives really good feedback and if you try hard you'll get an A. I learned a lot in this class and improved in my writing.
Gave poor instructions on assignments that often contradicted each other; made it hard to know what was expected of us. Feedback on graded assignments was mediocre & when asking him to explain further it didn't make any more sense. Political opinions and favoritism tainted every activity, making it hard to learn necessary content for assignments.
The substance of this class is very unique and makes you think outside of the box. For the mock trials, the class is separated into groups, so you need to be good at communicating and team work. Mr. O'Donnell is always willing to go the extra mile to help you perform your best. He makes himself available at all times for the sake of his students.
I took Law & Literature with Dr. O'Donnell and he's my favorite professor at UF. He makes classes really fun by mixing the legal proccess with works of fiction. Dr. O'Donnell is also really exeprienced as a lawyer and is a great resource outside of class The class itself was really challenging but greatly improved my writing and critical thinking!
As long as you attend the class, complete the assignments and actually go over his feedback you should have no problem. Also remember to never be late to his class or you will get in trouble.
This will prepare you for legal writing and law school. It is not an easy A but it is beneficial.
Professor O'Donnell was always really helpful and provided good feedback on every paper. He is passionate about writing and law and he definitely cares about the success of his students. Sometimes he is a little slow with grades but overall is a really great professor and would definitely recommend if you need to refine your writing or enjoy law.
This was a helpful introduction into legal writing without being intimidating or expecting expertise off the bat. There is meaningful feedback on a consistent basis for papers and an engaging class setting.
I took this class for a writing requirement. Although I hate writing, this was one of the most interesting classes I've taken. In addition to improving my argumentative writing, I gained debating and teamwork skills. Would 100% recommend!
I can honestly say that this class taught me a lot of valuable information that I will apply to law school in the future. Although this class is hard and you will spend a lot of time drafting legal briefs, you learn how to better collaborate with others. The prof wants you to get an A, but you have to work for it. Great professor, great class.
Best professor I've had teach me at UF so far; the class is great for anyone interested in law school! Attendance is important in order to stay up to date in material, however he is still understanding about emergencies. (Keep in mind his past constructive criticism on papers and work well with your group & you can get a good grade)
Very knowledgeable on the subject and would always provide great feedback. Helped me improve as a writer. There are some mock trials at the county courthouse which were great experiences, but you will be graded on the group papers and attendance. Very helpful in general, also helpful outside of the classroom. The books were pretty interesting.
This class was my favorite and the most rewarding class Ive taken at UF. I looked forward to going to his class everyday. His enthusiasm and facilitation of class discussions made it an amazing learning experience. He cared about all of his students and pushed us to do our absolute best. I became a much better writer which I 100% owe to him!
Professor O'Donnell was fantastic and fair! He created real opportunities for undergraduates to apply the law. Course curriculum requires working with a team to prepare and preform at mock court in the Gainesville courthouse! As a law student and legal intern, I can say that this course is great andprovides important tools used in the legal field.
This was the best course I could have hoped to take that really developed and refined my writing skills. The class was incredibly interesting covering cases and understanding how legal proceedings work. As well as understanding how important writing is for a successful career in law. I highly recommend this course for anyone interested in law!
This class pushed me towards wanting to be a lawyer. He was very enthusiastic about the subject and had great facilitation of the class discussions. He made sure all his students knew exactly what was meant by the instructions for assignments and provided excellent feedback on papers. The mock trial he conducted was also a rewarding experience.
Law & Lit is a class that challenges you, but don't blame the professor. It's a college writing course, it's not supposed to be easy. This class is unique in that you take interesting stories and create court room showdowns with your peers! So much fun! O'Donnell can be very direct but he clearly cares, so engage in the class and you'll do good.
Professor O'Donnell is one of the best professors. You can see he has a passion for teaching his students and for the inner workings of law. He is attentive, detailed, and goes out of his way to make class fun. He will bring treats to class because we did well on our assignments and has a big heart! He genuinely wants to see his students succeed.
One of the best law Professor at UF. Always willing to help his students. Simply a professor who loves his career. Actually teaches the students what they do not know.
Professor O'Donnell is a pretty good English professor at the University of Florida. You can tell that he cares about his students because of how enthusiastic he is in the classroom. His lectures aren't boring and he's very interactive with his students. Of course, you still have to do the readings in order to keep up with the assignments.
Professor O'Donnell is overall a pretty good teacher. I came into this class familiar with writing papers, so the amount of work did not surprise me. You'll be writing four papers during the semester. He is always available to give you feedback on your papers outside of class and help you as long as you participate. Just do your work and he'll help
This class is very time-extensive. You'll always need to start writing at least four or five days before the deadline. Teamwork is important, so make sure you're on top of your classmates and your own work. This course is very stressful, so if that first week you don't think you can handle it, I recommend dropping the course.
Professor ODonnell is the best professor I have had at UF. He is always available after class to meet or discuss any questions students have. He is heavily involved the every students writing process and offers as much help as possible. While the material is not the easiest, Im convinced any student can be successful with his help and guidance.
For a lower level writing class, professor ODonnell really pushes his students to improve. He was by far the easiest professor Ive had to get feedback and talk to outside of class. He will make you work for the grade but it is worth it!
Prof O'Donnell is the only professor in UF I have been able to create a personal connection during this pandemic. He is always available after class and will make time for you if you need help with your paper or research. Even though it is not the easiest class, if you don't procastrinate and take advantage of his help you can definitely get an A.
I enjoyed this course very much. This professor is very hands on and genuinely concerned about the students understanding of the material. This class is very fulfilling in regard to the amount of information being learned. I felt as if I were in law school already. This professor has outstanding credentials and devotes his time to make us better.
The class is pretty straight forward and having a professor who is an actual lawyer makes it even better. Your grade will reflect how often you go to class and extra credit is provided. I enjoyed my experience in his class and would recommend it to anyone with a passion to pursue a law career path. He tries his very best to make his students great.
Be prepared to do a good amount of writing and research for this course. Professor O'Donnell cares a lot about his students and is always available to speak with us about our papers. He will change his own schedule around to ensure he can Zoom and discuss the best way to address your arguments and present your case. You can't slack off, though.
Professor O'Donnell is the only teacher I have had that was so willing to communicate in and out of class for any concerns or questions. Success in the class is dependent on you communicating with the other students and with the professor, and by following his feedback throughout the course. Your writing and researching skills will greatly improve.
Dr. O'Donnell is one of the best professors I've had at UF. He is very knowledgeable and provides excellent feedback. Class is designed to really learn how to work in groups, create legal briefs and apply the law in mock court trials. You work hard, but you learn how the law operates, its genuinely interesting and you will become a better writer.
A very passionate and competent professor. Will work with you if you don't understand assignments or class material. Lectures and assignments are engaging and teach you certain concepts and functions of the legal system. This class is a must for students interested in a legal career.
Very passionate about the subject, but can come off as intimidating. He definitely cares a lot about his students, as well as improving their writing, but his feedback can be contradicting at times.
Do not take this class, unless you are ready to have a tremendous amount of work. He is not the most structurally sound, when it comes to what is expected of you in your papers. However, this class will teach you a lot about legal writing. Best advice, if you do take him, just engage with him/ talk to him as much as you can.
Professor O'Donnell is a tough cookie, but he cares a lot about the course and wants his students to succeed. If you want to be a lawyer or are considering a career in law, definitely take this class. He gives his students donuts after every trial so it makes all the work worthwhile.
Passionate professor, in good and bad ways. Actually loves the law. Available outside of class. Fun guy. Class made up of writing legal briefs in a group. Almost a month is spent on each brief. Briefs followed by a trial, no class credit for trial but it is expected. Offers extra credit. Great guy, hard grader.
I enjoyed taking this class with Professor O'Donnell as he was very knowledgeable in the field of law and was always willing to take time to help you improve your writing. The workload can be a lot, but it is manageable.
He has excellent legal knowledge and knows the course materials extremely well. The class helped with legal writing and legal research. He tends to get heated and becomes difficult to talk to and can come off as passive aggressive
REALLY knows his stuff and if you want to learn you really will. this was one of the most invested classes I've ever taken and while it was a large amount of work i would do it again in a heartbeat because of the great classroom he fosters and how cool the material. This is the only class where i know every single student and its amazing!
The class was useful but it is a hard class. he is a tough grader and expects a lot from his students giving harsh feedback that he later contradicts. Overall he wants students to succeed and will work with them outside of class to ensure that any questions students have are answered.
ODonnell takes into consideration effort and participation on top of quality, when grading assignments. He is accessible outside of class which is important in order to truly understand the assignments, and obtain good feedback. Most of the assignments are group based, but he will grade individually when needed. Put in the work & youll be fine!
Although challenging, I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Law & Literature. Professor O'Donnell's passion for teaching is clear and he always made himself available to answer any questions that arose. The mock trials throughout the semester were definitely a highlight and made this already interesting class very unique!
Prof. ODonnell is the rare Professor that will be candid with students. Ive gone through 3 and a half years of liberal arts education with few professors making me work to improve my writing, and Prof. ODonnells skills in writing are especially valuable for students to learn from.
This class got me interested in legal research. I am not a pro-debater but the trials we had were so fun. I would recommend doing the reading on time and going over it a few times. When I got COVID during the semester I had Bernie, he made me feel included and did not make me feel overwhelmed.
Professor can be very rude to students and gives poor feedback on assignments.
Learned more in this class than any other I've taken at UF -- definitely a MUST take if you are pre-law! He has clear expectations and will definitely challenge you but is always willing to work with students to make sure they are learning. Does fun mock trials and doesn't have busy work but be ready to write. Collaborative, very educational, 11/10
Took him last year. Terrible professor. He does not give any lectures or do anything besides sit at his desk and use his phone for the whole class. Instead of teaching, he makes us work on assignments all class. Also is disrespectful towards students and holds grudges. Beware. Worst professor I've had in my 4 years at UF.
This professor really cares about guiding you down the right path. He will make sure you are learning through experience, and hard work. It is a class that takes into account: hard work, participation, and attendance. Make sure to do all your readings and ask questions! Great Class, 10/10.
This professor truly cares about how his students perform in his class. He is always available outside of class to give comments and feedback.
This is a very interesting class. Professor O'Donnell was great and very straightforward. He provided the class with everything necessary for success. I would highly recommend taking this class.
This is the most interesting class that I've taken at UF. Professor O'Donnell is great at working with you to improve your legal analysis and writing. I highly recommend this course for anyone who is considering law school.
This was an awesome class! Professor O'Donnell kept me engaged in the material and he provided good feedback both before and after a paper was due. If you're thinking about law school, take this course.
ENC3465 was my most useful class at UF and that is because Professor O'Donnell really teaches you how to become a better writer. Before taking this course I felt very unknowledgeable about a lot of legal concepts. However, Professor O'Donnell makes his class extremely interesting, clear, and applicable. I highly recommend this class and Professor!
Writing in the law is a class I think every student considering law school should take. Professor O'Donnell does a great job at exposing students to the writing that is the foundation of understanding how the law works and what working with the law is actually like. He actively helps you grow as a writer as you learn what is required to make a case
If you truly want to find out if you can succeed in the style of work that's expected of you in Law School this course will be an excellent way starting to build, or furthering, the research, analysis, and writing skills that you'll need. Asking questions, reaching out to to those who specialize in research, and working with O'donnell will help.
If you have any interest in going to law school, I would highly recommend this class. Professor O'Donnell really helps you build your skills in legal research and writing through the coursework. While the class can be challenging, Professor O'Donnell gives you the tools and feedback you need to succeed.
There is no better combination of course and instructor for pre-law students than Professor Bernard O'Donnell's ENC1145 Writing About the Law in Literature. Professor O'Donnell is dedicated to furthering students' skills in writing, argumentation, and public speaking. I recommend this class to anyone that is interested in law or critical analysis.
Law and Lit is a great experience, especially for pre-law students. You get the opportunity to present arguments, simulate mock trial, write legal briefs, collaborate with team members and actually go to the court house (which was difficult as we had just gone back to in person lectures)! Mr. O'Donnell does appreciate preparation and actual effort.
Dr. O'Donnell's strongest attribute is the sheer passion and care with which he teaches his class. He expects high-level work from his students, and does everything he can to ensure his students get high-level instruction. Dr. O'Donnell will provide prompt and meaningful feedback and teach you valuable information about writing and the law.
Lacked professionalism and was spoke in a disrespectful way. He'd single you out by making everyone leave the classroom, implying to everyone that he was about to tear apart your work. Would get pissy and throw papers and paperclips. Made a someone cry while belittling their work in front of us. Standards are unclear, but very harshly enforced.
His classes gave me a lot of confidence in my writing and research. Be prepared to read and write. If he sees effort being made he'll work with you to polish your work before the deadline. Beneath his tough attorney exterior is a humble and funny teacher. If you are interested in going to law or graduate school, I suggest you take his course.
Professor O'Donnell is one of the most intelligent, helpful, & enjoyable professors I've had. His class requires effort, which is worth it b/c he teaches you everything you need to know. If you listen to his feedback, you'll improve as a writer, researcher, & student. I've taken other prelaw classes, his was my favorite.
This class is one of the most beneficial and valuable classes I have taken. Professor O'Donnell cares about this course/students and is extremely knowledgeable. If you are preparing for law school or questioning on whether you want to attend law school this class is a must! Be prepared to write a ton and work for your grade but it is so worth it!
Prof. O' Donnell's class was my favorite class taken at the University of Florida. As someone on the pre-law track, and as someone who loves literature, this class was a perfect fit for me. Prof. O'Donnell is knowledgeable and is great at teaching students how to develop the skills necessary for drafting successful legal arguments and briefs.
Professor O'Donnell offers ample opportunities for aspiring lawyers, as shown by his voluntary class mock trials & feedback (constructive criticism comes from the heart) on your group papers. Be ready to put in work- good amount of research & reading a lot of case law to support your stance. Do not wait until last minute to work on your papers!
Professor O'Donnell is a phenomenal instructor who demands a lot of hard work and effort from his students. His teaching style is straightforward and extremely educational. Every time I had any questions surrounding assignments or grades, I received answers and feedback immediately with very informative answers. One of the best professors I've had.
IDS4930 is the #1 most valuable & must-take course at UF for pre-law! O'Donnell is incredibly kind as he goes above & beyond to help students succeed! His course presents the reality of being a law student & the preparation it provides is instrumental. Use feedback to strengthen your work and take notes during lectures!
Definitely a good course to take if you're interested in going to law school. The legal briefs are tough to write if you've never written one before, but Professor O'Donnell gives really great feedback and overall it was a challenging but rewarding class.
This class made me realize the passion I have for law. You will work with a group the whole semester and have almost every class to work on your assignment. Use that time because the professor is right there to answer any question. He also gives good feedback and at the end of each assignment, you get to dispute the cases in a courtroom.
Professor O'Donnell is an excellent professor who goes above and beyond to help students succeed. Professor O'Donnell is very good about giving students helpful feedback on their writing. His passion for both law and literature really shine through in his lectures.
Dr. O'Donnell is a great professor! Taking his class really improved my skills at writing legal briefs, and I have found this very useful moving forward in my other pre-law courses. Take his class if you can! He is more than willing to help you if you have any questions and the briefs are really interesting as well!
Professor O'Donnell's Law and Literature course was easily the most rewarding and challenging class I took during my undergrad studies. By fusing an interesting premise for the course with practical applications of legal writing and research, Prof. O'Donnell challenges his students and pushes them towards growth and improvement. Take this course.
Professor O'Donnell is the best professor I have taken at UF. He works individually with each student for every assignment, gives detailed, thoughtful feedback, and rewards creative thinking. If you put in the effort and spend class time wisely, your research and writing skills will improve immensely. This course is a must for Pre-Law students.
This course improved my ability to communicate effectively through writing and has given me the inspiration to pursue a legal career. Professor O'Donnell provides meaningful feedback on your work product to ensure you understand how to improve your writing skills. Be prepared to work hard, but it will be worth it.
I had the privilege of taking IDS4930 with Prof. O'Donnell over the summer. The materials for the class were entertaining and easy to read which made the class overall quite enjoyable. I also greatly appreciated O'Donnell's teaching style and the engagement he would foster between students. I would definitely recommend taking one of his classes!
O'Donnell has a student-friendly teaching style. No exams, only group papers. You learn how to use NexisUni, which is used in other pre-law courses at UF. Also, O'Donnell makes himself available outside of office hours.
Is always there to give you advice to get you to the next step without giving you all of the answers. Is understanding when you want to review a graded assignment. Gives plenty of in-class time for you to work on papers. Is very nice and eager to help.
I took this class for my pre-law concentration and I would recommend if you're interested in law! I didn't know much going into this class but I feel like I've learned a lot of very applicable knowledge. 3 major assignments, but if you listen to feedback/take good notes during lectures it's very doable. Lots of fun class discussions on cases too.
The course educates on pre-law skills that most courses don't. Professor comes off as strict but criteria is clear and feedback is thorough. Many opportunities to work with him 1:1/small groups. Lot of writing but plenty of time to prep. Not a strict grader, but values good effort/understanding of the assignment. Intimidating course, worth taking.
Super useful class for a pre-law student. Doesn't waste any time, grades on time, and is always more than willing to provide feedback, you just have to reach out to him. Strongly recommend this course overall, very applicable for legal research.
Professor O'Donnell is an amazing professor for improving your writing and argumentation skills. Your grade is mostly determined by 3 papers. He is a strict grader, but he will give you feedback on an outline and rough draft for each paper so you know what to improve. If you are interested in going to law school then definitely take him!
This is one of the best classes you can take at UF as a pre-law student. The assignments are not only practical for building legal skills, but they are rewarding and engaging as well. O'Donnell gives great feedback on all written assignments. You'll be sure to improve your writing and argumentation skills by the end of the semester.
I took IDS4930 (Law and Literature) with Professor O'Donnell and learned so much about the law, this class gave me the perfect foundation for law school. You have to put the work in and stay on top of the readings and papers, but it will definitely pay off. Perfect class to take if you're planning on going to law school.
The course material is tough, as you are writing legal briefs, but if you put in the work then you will succeed. Professor O'Donnell has been pivotal in showing me what legal writing is supposed to look like. I am certain that I will have an upper hand during my first year of law school because of Professor O'Donnell's Law and Literature course.
I've taken Professor O'Donnell twice, and he's one of the best professors at UF. His insights into the legal field are invaluable. If you're aiming for a career in law, take his Law and Literature class it's incredibly rewarding. He's no nonsense expects you to come prepared and makes each discussion meaningful. Highly recommend!
Super intelligent and knowledgeable abt the law, very good at logic arguments but has a volatile temper. expects a LOT from you in a short time (pulled multiple all-nighters for this class) but good feedback, will answer any question you have (eventually), rewarding if you are ready to put in 200% work/effort to research and write!
If you are following a career path in law, this is probably one of the most beneficial classes you can take, as it consists of research and legal briefs. You can tell Professor O'Donnell really wants his students to understand the material and succeed, as he makes himself available for feedback in his own personal time.
Law and Literature was a great experience and Professor O'Donnell was an amazing professor. We worked on legal research and even got to experience a mock trial with real Lawyers listening and voting on the winner. Made me want to get into Law and I highly recommend any of his classes because he cares a lot about his students growth.
Professor O'Donnell's class is a must-take for pre-law students. Though strict, his detailed feedback helps improve writing and argumentation skills. unstuckstudy and the free textbook were great study aids alongside engaging class discussions.
Professor O'Donnell was by far the best professor I had at UF. He truly cared for his students and pushed them to grow and achieve their true potential. He was kind, passionate, and an all-around great man. He always made time for his students and I will never forget him and the impact he had on my decision to pursue law. Rest well, professor.
by far the best professor i have ever had at UF. so disappointed to learn that he passed away recently. amazing with feedback, very specific. always encouraging on student's pursuits. always motivated me to continue. many, many flowers to him.
