DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!
He is awful. Take another section. Always late.
incredibly boring lectures. i didn't learn a thing.avoid.
every one dozed in his classroom. 5-10 minutes late to class.lectures dont help
UGH this guy is awful...
Lectures are so boring and pointless, avoid if possible.
Dullest human being alive!

terrible, wors class i have EVER taken.
He's really a smart guy, but he is horribly boring. Don't worry about being 5 minutes late every day. You can walk in with him. He's a little vague. Not the worst... but... read the book.
I have had this prof for SOC 100 & Violence. (Why twice? Well, sometimes you just get stuck with classes). Lectures are boring and repetitive.
it's a great hour and 15 min of napping...
I have taken this professor (unfortunately) for 3 or 4 classes and every experience is the same. He is very boring, the tests are all the same and don't bother buying the books for his classes because the material isn't tested on
The WORST prof ever. AVOID.
make sure you have friends in his class or at the least a pillow, because he is the most boring professor ever.
Urrgh. Seriously, wanted to jab my pencil in my eye because I thought it would be more interesting than listening to him speak. Learned nothing, hope never to come near him again. I swear he emits low-frequency boredom waves.
second time taking. most boring class on earth. He says the same thing over and over again. Which is kind of nice cuz you don't have to read anything. its not on the syl. but he does take attendance into account!!! so go. and sleep.
Dr. Zant is a really smart man but sometimes gets off on subjects and you kinda of lose track of where is going with it. His tests are hard. I feel like I wasted my money by buying the book. He comes in 15 minutes after class starts. Lots of field trip
Class is completely boring and is highly repetivtive. He does take attendance into account. Grab a seat in the back and sleep.
great person to teach you how to think, though i disagree with the content.
Although he says he takes attendance into account, he really doesn't...it doesn't affect your grade at all. He's boring and often inconsistent with things he says. This is my second class with him and we are discussing the same things.
booooorrrrriiiiinnnnggggg

THIS MAN IS AN AWFUL TEACHER!! COMES TO CLASS LATE EVERYDAY, SITS DOWN AND TALKS, NO NOTES AT ALL!!!! THE ENTIRE GRADE IS 2 TESTS, 200 POINTS!!! WTF IS THAT!!! AVOID THIS MAN AT ALL COSTS!! WORST TEACHER EVER!!!!

this guy is real nice, but as for teaching, he gets very off subject. but what doesnt help is having a girl with glasses in the corner asking dumb questions all class long. he talked about a spirit possessing someone. no idea what that has to do with soc.
I will have had 5 classes with him. Yes he is boring and repetitive, but it's like taking the same class 5 times over. Great for napping.
Interesting material in textbooks, but repeats himself many times, and all his classes are the same.
The entire class is 2 tests. thats it. And he doesn't tell you what he wants on in the essay so its hard to write it.
Incredibly boring. I took the class for about 2 months before dropping. The lecture was literally the same every day, so I felt very unprepared. Interesting texts, but no explanation to go along with them.
is not from this planet, you can never really study for this class just go to class and try to follow him to the best of your knowledge, don't expect an A but you can get a B or a high C easy
Really boring, he gives the same lecture every day. Always at least 5-10 minutes late to class, your grade is only 2 exams, which are both just 2 in-class essays, and he doesn't give you much of an idea of what he wants.
Attendance counts. Even though the classes are extremely boring go every time, just work on other stuff. Take notes on the days he goes over the questions and you will be fine. And if you decide to listen, the stuff he has to say IS really interesting.
hmmm...nice guy. late to class everyday and literally gave the exact same lecture. the entire class is 2 tests that are essay, and he gives you the potential questions well in advance, but this class was so boring(w/ interesting books)that I dropped. you never really know what he is looking for.
Dr. Zant is a loon but his class was so cool! We went and visited jails and prisons for a semester and it was AWESOME!!!!!!!!

I have taken all of Dr.Zants classes, overall I really like him and enjoy his lectures, even though they can be allitle boreing and often repeat themselves. He is deffinitly way to smart to be teaching undergrad classes. Attend class, shut your mouth and stay awake and youll be fine.
took 5 of his classes-loved them and him. it isn't difficult if you can think for yourself and think outside the box. much of the material really changed my outlook on life and years later, i still think about what i learned and how it impacts society. zant taught me how to think, not just for material necessary for exams. he's enlightening.
I've had 3 classes with this guy and they're all the same. Boring lecture, he gives out hardly any notes and you go into the tests blindly. He grades based on if he likes you or not so suck up. It's hard to avoid him since he teaches so many classes with only one section, but if you can avoid him, do it.
Very interesting dude, but grades a little too hard. Classes are worth taking though.
He tends to ramble, but is very interesting and enjoyable to listen to. Attendence helps your grade in the end and all of his classes has the same essay-exam method - you get to have an outline for the essays! Great guy!
Zant is a very intelligent professor and he knows a lot about this topic. I didn't find this class to be boring I thought it was pretty interesting actually. If you listen to him and actually think about what he says it can be a life changin course.
He's a pretty cool guy and his lectures are very interesting. He is by far the most helpful advisor I have met, and have been in college on and off for like 7 years.
I love Dr. Zant his class is interesting and easy to pass if you listen and understand what he teaches.
Dr. Zant's class is interesting to say the least. he is very monotone and that is his only problem. He uses teh Reiman book a whole lot so make sure to read and understand that book. I do not think he is a harsh grader. Just write everything you can because his tests are all essay. Good class, and he is a very easy-going and nice guy
The class is based on 2 tests, which are both essay format (min 5 pages..during the class time). He lectures a lot about things off topic and it is Extremely hard to get a short answer out of him in regards to anything. This course is very much focused on Philosophy so if you don't like it then i wouldn't suggest taking this class.
Dr. Zant, while a great guy, he can be unclear. Pretty much impossible to get an A, due to his grading. Only have 2 tests, all essay, which suck. I prepared a week for a test and got a low B. Material is very interesting however. Very boring teaching method. .
He is SO boring to listen to but you DO learn a lot about things you normally would not really think about. He goes into WAY to much detail about the most trivial of things, but you leave class wondering and questioning these things. He will mostly lecture and you can easily text and/or sleep during class and he won't notice.
Tends to go off on long tangents during class time. We often spent 1hour of the class going over what we covered in the previous class, then tacking on new information in the last 15 mins. Field trips were fascinating, when he let our host do the talking and didn't eat up the time by himself.
Dr. Zant is a revolutionist, not an objetive criminal justice teacher. All his classes stem from the same exact model in regards to history and sociology. That being said, why not just combine all the classes into one, and just create new more modern and technically relevant courses? Also, you don't need to go to class, which is nice.
Class is very sit and listen. You have 2 essays midterm and final. Must attend class to take notes. Books are used everyday. Class goes by very fast if you bring laptop. Grades fairly. Tests are 5 page essays
I have taken four classes with this man and by the time is was finished, i had learned very little. The comment below about him being a revolutionist is dead on and if you just dont beleive in the theories he teaches youll have a rough time explaining on the tests why they work.
He is beyond boring! I could not stand to sit in his class. He is very wise in his field and understands what he is teaching but, he turns a student desk around and talks at the class for the full time period. He doesn't move or use visual aids and is very hard to follow.
He will kind of talk around in circles and it will drive you crazy but he does get his point across when he has a point to give out
There are only two grades (midterm and final). Both tests are just essays. He is a wise man, but very boring! You could probably go to every other class and get the same out of it, as if you went to all of the classes. I recommend not taking him if you don't have to. Do not take him if you do not have to! You have been warned!
Zant is extremely smart and knows what he is talking about. His classes are just very boring and repetitive. But I think his classes are still interesting and fairly easy if you actually try. It's probably not necessary to go to every class, although it does help.
Don't listen to his lectures, everything on the test comes straight from the book, and he rambles about nothing most of the time. Go to class because he gives extra credit for not missing class, but just read the book and you'll be fine
You have to go to class to get points, and you can get extra credit for going so go- and bring your laptop so you don't have to listen much to him. He rambles and is boring, sometimes gives good hints on test questions though. Everything is straight from the book, make sure you know all vocab and people. Not exactly hard, just boring.
Dr. Zant is an ok teacher. His lectures are have nothing to do with the course. The only way you can pass this class is to study on your own, take a lot of notes from the book, attend class everyday, and go to his office hours. During his office hours, he break down the material much better then he does in class.
I took the online soc100 course during May Interim with Dr. Zant, and found it very easy and fairly interesting. Most of it is textbook reading, but he enhances the text with daily emails that clarify and expand on some of the ideas. I would definitely recommend taking his class (at least the online one) if you're looking to fulfill some gen-eds.
Dr Zant is boring but hes not hard at all! Its very easy to get a B in his class, A's are a little more hard to come by. If you pay attention this class is easy. The essays are given to you a week ahead of time, so no surprises. PLUS hes always happy to answer any questions you have about them.
He knows his stuffbut talks in circles and you have to pick and choose what is important. he tells you what he wants for his exams and gives you the questions. just be ready.
Dr. Zant is very intelligent and passionate about what he teaches. Lectures can be boring only if you let them. Overall, great professor.
Dr. Zant is the best! I don't think he is boring, I find him a facinating and intelligent man! He does talk in circles, but that is part of his brilliance.
This guy is smart but his class is impossible to understand and all he does is talk in circles and never gives direct answers. Avoid taking him at all costs, his class is terrible.
I love this subject which is why I took the class. But he can ramble on the same subject for days. It says something when almost the entire class is using a cellphone or laptop during his class. He also only has 2 grades, midterm and final exam and he seems to pride himself in not having students with an A. AVOID!
You will use the book everyday and you will have to read it and take notes to do well. This is because he is incredibly hard to follow and rambles a lot. He only has 2 grades, midterm and exam. And I'm not sure if anybody has gotten an A in the class so far. I would avoid!
Just as everyone else said, he rambles on and on and talks in circles. He's really hard to follow and even if you try, you end up confused and trying to understand how the material connects with what he's saying. The books help a lot but his 2 exams are all essay and hes a really picky grader. I would definitely avoid this class with him
His notes were 100% useless, but the class was amazing! I learned a ton and it was a great way to start off my minor in Sociology. If you are interested in Sociology or Social Work, I would highly recommend taking this course.
One of the absolutely worst professors I've ever had. He's inconsistent and unclear about what he wants on the midterms and the finals. I will NEVER take a class with him ever again.
He does a bad job explaining concepts, but as long as you take note of the sections in the book that he says are important, you will do fine. Use the book as your guide and disregard his explanations in order to not be confused. The class was very dry because it was so theoretical, but had interesting points.
Finding the important information from the book and notes is much harder than it needs to be. Tons of useless information surrounding the actual material. If you're wanting to follow the book or his notes be ready to read them several times.
I would absolutely recommend this class. It was very interesting and applicable in a surprising number of situations. You get to visit prisons for this class, which is a one-of-a-kind experience. The first half of the class was boring, but the second half was way cool! Make sure you know classicalism and positivism for the midterm and final.
Very interesting class because of the field trips. However, He is very confusing during lectures and contradicts himself on the information he wants us to write about on the tests. The information is very theoretical. His grading scale is crazy. He says its basically impossible to get an A. DO NOT TAKE.
Mr. Zant is a nice teacher I'll say that much, but the way he teaches the material is boring. Most of the questions come from the textbooks and the way he words the questions make it difficult to understand. Exams were too long to finish in the amount of time given and tons of material to remember. Would recommend another professor.
He's a great teacher, but his lectures consist of him sitting down the entire time and talking from multiple books. He has no powerpoints or resources to access. The tests were very long, in fact, I couldn't even finish a test without going 10 min over the limit. If you want to do good, study from the book and remember the definitions.
His class is extremely boring and it is not fun to sit through. He has a very deep voice and it is hard to pay attention and half the class falls asleep. If you do happen to get him, paying attention isn't necessary, just read the book!
Dr. Zant is a very nice guy and wants you to do well, but he is hard to follow. There are only 5 grades all semester plus 20 points of attendance (6 EC for perfect attendance). Every point matters in this class. I did very well on the two essays, including a perfect score, but still only got a C even with a large curve because of the hard exams.
Dr. Zant's SOC100 class was the most dull class I've ever had to attend. Mr. Zant had no lecture slides and instead just talked freely from the book, because of this, the tests are difficult to say the least. If you have to take his section, use it as a study hall. Don't ditch, you get 6 points of extra credit if you go to every class.
Super boring old man that rambles forever. Class is entirely theoretical and he lets you use an outline on the two essay tests. If you read you will pass regardless of if you go to class or not because he gives you a list of what the essay questions might be for the tests. If you read and use the questions to make an outline you should be fine.
I don't even know where to start on him. Nice guy, and meaningful lectures, but he shows up late to every class and doesn't use powerpoint. Doesn't have notes either.
Difficult class. Entirely based on theoretical. Half the exam comes from him, the other half comes from the book. Very hard class.
He's a nice guy and that's about it. All he does is talk about things that don't even apply to sociology and when you actually pay attention, he has culturally rude remarks to say. Only take him if you want to fall asleep in class and never learn anything.
I hope this is the worst class I take here. Lectures are unorganized and hard to follow. He literally sits in the corner and rambles. Attendance is mandatory, especially for extra credit. Prepare to learn nothing in class and teach yourself the material.
Dr. Zant is a very smart man. His passion and knowledge for the subject is incredible. People struggle in this class because he talks throughout the lecture and uses a lot of theories in his teachings. This can catch people off guard but if you listen you will be do great. Plus you get to visit 7 prisons in this class. 2 exams both essay based.
I sat in the back used the time to read for myself or other classes. Read the book and study the book, don't expected to get a perfect score if you know everything from the book as some questions are based on his own reasoning. There are two essays to write as well. He's a sweet professor and will help as long as you reach out to him.
He barely follows the book material. He sits and babbles on. Hardly ever following any course material. Its very hard to understand what he is even talking about. I have heard from other classmates they find him very confusing. If you are looking for a good professor who helps you gain knowledge of the class subject.. DO NOT TAKE CLASS WITH ZANT
You dont need to go to class, but if you do you get extra credit at the end. His lectures are just him talking often about the same thing. He is super passionate about sociology, but you learn nothing on the test. Read the text book and you will do good, class attendance is optional. At the end he rounds grades significantly and is very generous.
Don't take this man!!! He does not really seem to care for his students or anything else. I get going online with COVID is tough but it does not mean you have to be mean and rude and overall hard to work with when it comes to your students.
Dr. Zant is the most caring & kind professor I;ve ever had. I was really sick this semester and he reached out to me to make sure I was okay and gave me ample time to make up coursework. There are only 2 written exams and 4 short quizzes, all of which are graded fairly easy. The textbook is really great & easy to read. I hope to have him again.
He was my favorite professor!!!
