Bernd is going to make you work, but he genuinely makes calculus fun and will work with you on anything you need. He WANTS you to succeed and will go out of his way to see to it that you do, IF you try.
He didn't even grade our homework and when confronted about grading quizzes/tests unfairly, he got very defensive. Not good at receiving criticism and offered little/no help in office sessions but always willing to hold them.
painfully boring class but not hard, nice guy, likes to see students succeed
The man hated me from day one, for no apparent reason whatsoever. He actually called me a hard ass in class because I disputed something he said, of which he was actually wrong. Horrible grader, not interesting, don't take the class...unless you like Fs

extremely graphical approach to teaching
He is the worst teacher I have ever had at Xavier. I didn't learn a thing. he didn't help me. He was very unclear. He would get upset when everyone is failing, not relaizing that it wasn't our fault. He wants you to forget everything you have ever learnied from math because he feels that it's wrong.
If you are awesome in math, you may do okay. But overall the class is very difficult and pretty much all self taught out of a horrible book. He never stays on task and rarely helps you out. Do not take it if you don't have to!
Very good professor and very unique. He seeks to understand mathematics at its core. Most math professors just put formulas on the board with out providing any fundamental explanations as to where they came from. Dr. Rossa breaks theories down and explains them maximizing understanding.
I've had this guy for two different classes. Most people either love or hate this guy. I couldn't stand him at first, but once i got used to writing journals for my math homework (weird, huh?) I realized that his way of teaching makes it extremely easy to get a good grade. Now I love him.
Dr.R is the best professor on Xavier's campus. He is willing to spend huge amounts of time outside of class working with students, plus he's a really nice guy. His teaching method is great!!! Take his class if you want to learn about math, or if you want to learn how to LEARN and how to THINK.
Very nice and willing to help. Can be unclear at times but always makes sure that everyone understands.
This class was totally awesome!!! Dr. Rossa is amazingly clear, and knows exactly when to give you a hint, or when to let you struggle a bit, giving you a sense of accomplishment. He's always available and willing to help outside of class. If you work in his class, you will learn a ton.
He tries but is very rigid in his teaching methord. i didnt learn anything in his class.
I love Dr. Rossa! You can tell he really loves to teach his subject unlike some other professors. He can be unclear at times, but he tries to make sure that everyone understands. He doesn't like it when people just jump to the answer. He is more focused on the method than the answer (and also being able to explain your answer).
I'll admit I really didn't like him at first, but as the semester went along, I changed my mind. He truly loves math and teaching, and he makes you passionate about it too. His approach is very different, but in the end you actually understand the math and can connect it to what you've learned previously. Great teacher.
so hard.. he teaches you like you are supposed to know what he is talking about. he is good at explaining if you say you dont get it.. however, tests are brutal..attendance matters
rossa is an awesome teacher, i dont care what all the other people are saying. if you arent a complete idiot he will make calculus easy. his tests are east, just pay attention to how he wants to you write sentences.
Excellent teacher. he's more worried about how u got answer than actually knowin answer.he goes over things over and over and ya gotta be crazy not to understand bc he reiterates everythin until it clicks. he is passionate bout teaching. attendance is important bc he'll give quizzes but u can do them w/ a partner. def. reccommend, easier than 120
Fun to be around when jolly which is most of time. I wonder does he give Bernd hugs? Midterm exam- decided on lower grading scale after looked at class test results=unfair. A few geniuses suddenly send great students into the scary land of mediocrity. I hope I make out all right. Excellent office hour availability. Hoping to take for Real Anlys II.
Rossa teaches based on the Moore Method, meaning "I don't teach you anything." He only helps during office hours and then he talks about topics unrelated to your question. If you don't understand, he'll have the "smart" kids do the problem and assume everyone understands. His grading is subjective and contradictory to the syllabus. Get out!
I had Dr. Rossa for a 2 week summer intersession and I could not have asked for more. He was willing to help with any problem and graded very fairly.
i love his style of teaching... you have to be in his class to understand but it's super good...I have to work hard and regardless of my interest, he does his best to make the class interesting... if anything else, he definitely has passion...and you can't really fall asleep - he'll keep an eye on you to make sure you do ok!!!!! =)
HE WAS AWESOME
Crazy man. Spends very little time in class on how to do the actual problems, but almost all the time on why we do the problem. Test are on doing the problems, thus class is absolutely worthless. The kids who got the best grades, did their homework while he taught, instead of paying attention.
Amazing class. drag becaues it was late in the afternoon but he did his best to try and keep the energy up. many laughs. if you need things explained thouroughly, i would highly recommend. try and not miss class-he is not a fan of that. do the homework, it helps, and if you have a question, ask.
A very... different man, refuses to do problem examples in class, funny & has a great accent. I really am still trying to figure out how I got a B+? He is baffled that nobody else shares his fascination with the subjects. Participate & he will like you. They way he comes up with/grades tests is quite funny because he is so lazy & easily distracted.
Rossa is a great teacher with a passion for what he does. I'm not a math student nor have i ever cared to be, but he completely changed my perspective. Pay attention, do your work, ask questions and you will do FINE. people who don't like him are generally just not willing to work hard, and he dislikes that. Good luck!
Funny guy, good class. The book was useless. Pay attention in class! Also, do the problems on the handouts. The tests aren't bad, no surprises. Seriously, pay attention in class, and you'll do well.
Rossas class is really fun. He is so interested in what he is teaching and he is really funny. You must go to class and do the homework but as long as you do you'll be fine. The tests aren't hard, he will always tell you what to expect.
I'm a very mathematical person, so I was able to understand his teaching better than most students. But he makes every attempt to make sure that everyone understands the material, answering every question on the previous nights homework before he starts each day's lecture. Go to class and do the assigned reading and problems, and you'll do fine.
easy class, but participate! it can really affect your grade.
Dr. Rossa has an interesting and refreshing approach to teaching. He is very conceptual and visual with his teaching. He challenges you to be an independent learner but is always very helpful and understanding. He is excellent!
Dr. Rossa is a very interesting character. He loves to teach Calculus, but he sometimes is hard to understand (not just because of his accent). His tests are extremely difficult; most were take-home exams, so we couldn't really ask him for help. Do the homework, PARTICIPATE ALL THE TIME, and you'll be fine.
Great guy outside the classroom, and prob in higher math. Not for calc though. Very abstract, hard to follow. this coming from a math major, don't take if you don't have to. Calc is a practical subject and he refuses to teach the method, only the concepts.
This professor is to be avoided at all costs. He expects you to live and breath math. The take home tests were ok, except for the one he made super hard out of revenge. The final was made to not be finished and was different than all other exams. Also, no one recieved above a 90 in participation in the class. This guy picks favorites. Run Away now
I did terribly in this class despite Rossa's efforts. He's an excellent (if eccentric) teacher, and if you put in the effort and communicate with him, you will do well with him.
Avoid at all costs. His out of the ordinary teaching style was ridiculous and hard to follow. For example: we spent 2 weeks (4 classes) on the understanding of linear functions, but only 1 class on power, exponential, and logarithmic functions. He was stubborn and refused to answer questions directly. He used participation points to hurt your grade
The most kind and helpful teacher I have ever had. He is really passionate about what he does. he expects you to work outside of class, however, so if you are lazy don't take him.
the worst teacher ever i've never had problem with math until i had him. worst ever never take him!!!!!!
If you want to learn real math take him. He's a great professor but you have to appreciate his teaching style. Use his office hours and get to know him. Participation is very important to him. There are 3 tests and a final. Very little homework. Not bad at all. He explains and spends time on concepts unlike most professors. Take him!
Rossa just LOVES math. He is amazed by all things numbers; it's hard not to love it about him. He is so willing to help and truly wants everyone to understand. I hate math but still enjoyed him as a prof. He is a picky grader though. Huge on semantics, so choose your phrasing wisely. More written out explanations than in most math courses.
Rossa is very helpful if you go to his office hours. Listen to him and class and use office hours and you should do fine.
Worst teacher ever. Didn't make any sense what he did. He would spend a long time on easy stuff and not on the hard. NEVER TAKE HIM
TAKE AT OWN RISK. Wants to help you truly understand math. In doing so, makes no sense and loses most of the class. Answers on tests have to be just like what he would write. Really nice guy who wants you to do well but his teaching style just doesn't work
Must enter with open mins toward math. Forget what you think you know, and do not be stubborn. Do not work ahead, because he does things his own way...and that way is the the right way. He wants you to understand more than simply know how to do.
Worst professor I have ever had in my life. If you can get out of this class, DO IT. The way he tries to explain the material is not helpful and ends up confusing you more. He rarely uses the text but use it if you want to succeed.
NEVER TAKE HIM! He is the worst professor I have ever had. He makes math philosophical and has no regard for students' questions concerns. Even if you go to ask for help he will basically tell you that you are on your own. There also have been instances of him cursing students out during class...
HORRIBLE!!! He goes off on unrelated tangents, wastes class time yelling at students about how their misunderstanding. Even going to his office hours did not help. I'm mad that i bought the book but didnt' use it
Among the best math teachers I have ever had. Very helpful for students who are not math majors. He would slow class discussion so that those struggling could follow along.
Nice guy but not a good math teacher. He should be teaching philosophy instead of math.
Very Bad at explaining material. Makes the class philosophical and does not spends a lot of time explaining the methods. Half of the semester was spent on talking about linear functions, material that was learned in prerequisite courses.
His class is HARD. He doesn't really teach, he expects you to figure out the material on your own. His class should be renamed philosophy of math. Everyone in the class hated him because he DOES NOT teach the material. He is passionate about HIS work outside of class but not the class itself. Avoid this class if your bad at math.
Must appreciate his teaching style in order to do well. Not a bad guy to be around in office hours.
Worst professor I've had at Xavier so far. Teaching style is very frustrating and hard to follow. He takes off points on tests for ridiculous reasons. Teaches math like it's an English class. We were very far behind compared to other classes.
Nice guy, not a great teacher.
Worst professor I have had at Xavier. Very unreasonable in his grading and knit picks at every unnecessary detail. We also write more than do math. Avoid at all cost.
Awful! This guy thinks that math will be the key to our lives and grades way too hard. I lost points on a test because a line wasn't parallel and after asking others no one else felt that it wasn't parallel. He's not the teacher for me
If math is your thing and you're good at it (especially if you passed precalc pretty well or took AP calc in high school) then this is NOT the professor for you. If math isn't your thing and you struggle with it then Rossa would be a goof prof for you. He is more detailed than you've ever seen a math teacher.
He's a good teacher but grades extremely harsh
Rossa explains that math is the key to everything. I would not take class again. Try to avoid this teacher for your benefit! Drops lowest HW and Quiz however.
Unconventional? Yes. Incredibly smart? Yes. Rossa is honestly one of the most amazing professors I've had at Xavier. He is a though grader, but if you like math, you can learn a lot from this guy. If you go to his office hours and DO THE READINGS, you'll do good in class.
Dr. Rossa is easily one of my favorite people on campus. I gained a lot from his class, and not just content-wise. He was very available and encouraging when I was struggling with content. Very willing to listen and work through things with me.
Professor Rossa is very opinionated and tends to go off topic. If you do your work you are likely to do well but he tends to go off and yell most of the time.
Profesor Rossa was not what I thought he'd be. He was funny and nice, but he didn't grade fair and was disrespectful to students. There were lots of student/teacher arguments about grades and how he taught.
He's not clear on assignments, rude, and annoying.
At first, Bernd seemed like a nice old grandpa. He still is! I don't regret taking this class, but the work was annoying, and if you do not pay attention you might not do well. It starts with a lot of excel, and then you learn what he wants to teach you. You have to pay over $100 for an online book that he tells you to read, but isnt used in class.
One of the worst teachers ever. Rossa gets off topic during class that I cannot follow him the majority of the time. There are no notes to take in the class and the hw he gives us, we have no idea how to do and says that we either know how to do the homework or not and then gets angry when we get confused. We aren't allowed to ask questions at all.
Professor Rossa is a horrible teacher. He can be funny at times, but overall it was not a good course. He humiliates his students in front of the class. He tried to get several people from my class kicked out of xavier. You will be screamed at for yawning. The course content makes no sense whatsoever.
honestly one of the worst professors I've ever had, he was disrespectful to me and many of my classmates. beyond being rude he was very hard to talk to due to judgment he gave you, and majority of his course work is busy work and he doesn't teach anything that will benefit you in the future.
For this specific class, he is not that bad especially if you put in the work and do the homework assignments. He can be frustrating in class sometimes when he rambles about various things, but overall, I would not say it is too difficult to get a decent grade if you do the assignments.
Oh Dr. Rossa - get ready to always be on your toes. You never know what you're going to get. Not a bad guy - can be funny sometimes but class was at times chaotic. Really wants you to do well - has plenty of office hours.
Dr. Rossa is not a horrible person, but he is not an amazing professor. It is a miracle that I got a decent grade in the class because I did not understand anything. If you are in his class, my advice is to go to office hours, even though there is a high likelihood you will feel stupid or get nothing out of it is high, you will get a better grade.
If you truly love math then this is the class for you. Prof. Rossa loves to go into detail with even the simplest math. There are a lot of mini homework assignments that mostly involve reading articles. Although it may be tedious, he really wants you to learn and understand everything you do. Fail a quiz? Go to office hours he will raise the grade.
Not a lot of people like professor Rossa, but he was one of my favorites. His classes are mainly lecture heavy, but in my opinion it's easy information. He really cares about his students and wants you to succeed. An easy A in my opinion.
Rossa acts like a nice guy and jokes around to make it harder to pick out what he is: a deeply unkind burnout with a weak connection to reality. Expect him to be cruel, expect him to be lazy, don't expect to understand what he thinks, and don't put any stock into what he says beyond mathematical facts he recites. Rossa is not an effective teacher.
He is very condescending and rude to girls lowkey a misogynist. He is german Andrew Tate and do not take if you can help it. Have fun!
Fought a kid in our section. that's all I'm saying don't take anything with him.
I would recommend Dr. Rossa if you struggle with math. He is willing to help during office hours and after class. Exams weren't too stressful because starts everyone with 40 free points out of 100. He's a nice guy but he gets annoyed when students don't participate or pay attention. He doesn't want anyone to fail. you'll pass if you give an effort.
Dr. Rossa definitely cares but has trouble explaining things for the class to understand. He tries his best but me and my classmates seemed to be completely lost once we got past the first couple of units. The average on test grades and quizzes were very low but the nice thing is that homework's would keep everyone's grades at a decent final grade.
Professor Rossa was easily the poorest educator I have ever had in my entire life. He is extremely rude, stuck in his old ways, strays off topic, doesn't help anyone with any questions in class, is very lazy and was quite miserable to be around. I self taught myself this course and so did everyone else. Rossa has no business being an educator.
Good professor. Classwork was semi-hard, but he was always available outside of class to help and will talk to you even if it isn't about anything math related. Exams are easy because there is a ton of guaranteed points and quizzes aren't too bad either.
Passionate about math, wants his students to learn and wants to see them do well. He just can't connect with college kids and his ways of teaching are outdated. He will overcomplicate topics so much. The way he taught linear functions would make you seem like linear functions were an aerospace engineering 400 level class type problem.
Probably one of the worst math teachers I have ever had. I passed, but only because he hands out free points on the tests and the homework is graded so heavily because he knows no one would pass without i. He can't teach. If you come off as smart he will try to humble you. He gets made when people don't participate, but picks on you if you're wrong.
He can be funny at times but he is a terrible teacher. If you have ever taken any sort of pre-calc or college algebra or calculus prior to this you will be fine. But if you have not it might be struggle but the exams are not worth that much so just do well on the homework.
Real Analysis was the hardest class I've ever taken. Never have I ever been more frustrated during a class. It made me so mad. But… it changed me as a person. Dr. Rossa made me a deeper thinker and a better mathematician, and I will be forever grateful.
