This woman is a very unhappy person who not only cannot teach but is out to make others as miserable as she is.

Made class fun!!!
great class, very nice, learned a lot!!
Only take this teacher if you want to spend your entire semester studying.
Unforntuanately this teacher does not know how to teach and should never allowed to do so. Creates a very poor learning environment. Is very unorganized and the students often pay the price.
Speer made the class interesting and yes there was alot of homework and labs to complete but she made it interesting and most assignments involved using website links to answer questions. Yes at first she comes across abrasive but she was cool in my book. I enjoyed her class and actually learned alot. I would recommend her to bio majors to take.
This class was far more difficult than I imagined. It took me more than a month to get a hold of her grading style for labs and the essay questions on the tests are extremely difficult. She loves biology however and lecture is fairly interesting. Good professor, but extremely hard.
I took her online class and she was very helpful. The class is quite a bit of work, though, so be prepared. As long as you watch all the videos and answer the study guide questions thoroughly, you ought to be fine.
Professor Speer is one of the most down to earth professors I have ever had. She is incredibly relaxed and is open to class discussions and new ideas.
This was the online/video class, The Living Planet. Speer was unbelievably helpful throughout the semester and replies very quickly to any question. The material was really interesting and I would highly recommend it to any non-science majors that need the credits. You MUST study hard & keep on top of the class discussions on blackboard. GOOD LUCK
Had her during the summer, didn't really listen during class. I went home, read the powerpoints by myself, wrote down the important info, studied that, and passed all tests with an A. You MUST study. I now realize how good of a teacher she was, I learned a lot. The prof. I have for BIOL 1409 is horrible, I'd give anything to have prof speer back!
its a tough class, but she is a good teacher. its a good class to take if you are serious about getting into the nursing program.
prof. speer seems better compared to other teachers but sometimes isn't clear. the material is tough. i recommend her but, in my opinion if u act like a kisser upper, she'll respect u more & not be so tough on u. which is annoying
You study 2 videos for 2 weeks. The videos are an hr long each and they are accompanied by 60-80 questions ea. video. The exam then has ONLY36 questions. This means you can only miss so many before you fail. You don't have a much of a chance because you dont really even know what to study! Then you also have 2 essay questions. GOOD LUCK
She is very nice and friendly. Go to class and pay attention to her presentations. Go home do the homework. Watch the videos. Study the homeworks before the test. Now you know how to succeed in this great course.
Best teacher I've ever had! You have to study a LOT to make an A but it is possible and she is very happy to help you understand things! Great for nursing students!!!
If you study so hard you are going to have a A+. Also you need to respond at your blackboard for have all your points. If you are lazy and think that college is same like high school, please don't take this class, but if you are going to study this class is an A
Best Biology you could ask for.
I don't know how she normally does things because I was in her summer class, but we had 5 tests (most had more than 100 points available), we had 15 homeworks, and 1 extra credit opp. for 20 points. She's very likeable and fun and she incorperates awesome videos into her lectures. Also, all of her lectures are on Blackboard and so is the homework
This teacher is wonderful! I am terrified of science courses, but she went out of her way to help us understand the material. she does give a lot of homework and the test were a little difficult. However, I would definitely take another science course with her if I could!
She lectures very well but she has no vested interest in her students doing well in class; she really doesn't care if 50+% of the class fails. Getting an A on a test takes an Act of God and she seems to hate giving full credit on essay questions. If you are a solid 4.0 student you will STILL have many problems getting an A in this class!!!
The BEST professor! This professor is SMART. Very good explaining the material. I have been an honor student for 1 1/2 yrs. I have a C in this class. Not the professors fault..content of material is HARD! You have to study everything!
Online Living Planet class. I love this class. The material is interesting, great videos and links. Professor responds quickly to questions and clarifies things on the discussion boards. You do need to stay on top of homework and keep up with posing on blackboard. My first time taking an online class and it's been a great experience for me.
Speer is a great teacher, and will take the time to help you learn the material. She uses all the tools available to help you learn and will push you hard. Not an easy A or blow off course, great for people who really are committed to getting the most out of a class. Don't miss lecture exams, even if you are ill, the makeups are way harder than the original!
How to get an A: go to every class, take good notes, memorize and practice every drawing she does in class (her tests have at least 3 on them), Do the lecture objectives in detail, make time to study for Lecture and Lab exams (they are on the same day!) tough class but learned A LOT!
This was a very hard class - I have a ton of respect for Professor Speer - you must study. I feel like I'm ready for anything after this class.
Speer teaches WAY more info than you need. Her tests are very hard. Do not take her class unless you want to be stressed out the whole semester.
BEWARE! She overteaches anatomy. I have talked to other prof about her and although they will not comment about her, their body language response has been like "OH, yeah, I know her". She covers more material than you EVER need to know to be a nurse. It is too much to process and you will be totaly stressed out. DON'T TAKE HER!
This teacher knows her stuff, but it is by far the most rude and demeaning prof. I've ever encountered. Has not interest in student success at all. Takes an already difficult subject and makes it excruciating.
Ive read some of the comments on here and they're pretty harsh. Shes not the most clear of teachers but if your actually interested in biology and not just trying to get an easy grade her "over teaching" turns out to be pretty interesting. She responds quickly and always had my grades sooner rather than later. I like her. Shes misunderstood.
You can not ask a question what so ever, unless you want her to make fun of you. Is the toughest professor I had ever had, stressful, very stressful.
No matter who your teacher is, this course is going to be tough. She teaches very well, and her lectures weren't boring. She used PowerPoint and wrote on the board. She gives homework, and 1 or 2 weekly quizzes, but they actually helped my grade so I didn't mind. My only complaint is she can be very rude and condescending. Overall: B+
I took her for anatomy, and physio, she was and is still the hardest/BEST prof i have ever had (Both subjects are HARD) I came out of both classes knowing way more than students who took other professors. These classes require alot of work, but if you are serious about your career in health care Take her to get a solid foundation.
Ms.Speer is very knowledgeable but is not a people person. Every class was torture because she either made you feel stupid for asking questions, or was rude to you or you neighbor during lecture. Honestly dont take her. You can learn as much without her.
She is extremely rude. Cant ask questions without some smart-a comment coming back. Tests are so nit-picky, if you go to study sessions you will pass the essay portion of tests. Shes helpful but unapproachable. If you didnt have her in anatomy youre in for a rude awakening. Im an A student and i barely even made a B. ITs a VERY intense class
Professor Speer is amazing! She couldn't be any clearer about her expectations and she always gives wonderful examples and demonstrations to help students learn and understand. There is a lot of content to be covered and she does a great job of it. I just started nursing school and I couldn't be more grateful to her now!
Reading some of the comments about Professor Speer were a little intimidating but when i took her class everything that was said is not true! Profeesor Speer is very clear on everything she teaches! I understand Biology so much better with all of the videos she shows to help understand. Take this teacher! Shes knows whats shes talking about!
I have almost completed my hours at ACC and I feel Professor Speer has been my best teacher yet. She's never been rude to anyone; I expect some wanted their grades given to them instead of earned. You do need to do your work, plus study for this class, the material is presented very clearly.
Watch out Scary teacher..Very rude when asking questions in class alright during office hours. Tests consist of drawings and essay, make a spelling erroer and she marks it entirely wrong. Good teacher but makes it much more difficult than it needs to be.
Very good teacher! Before I took her class I was scared of Science classes altogether and had been avoiding then. She is very good at explaining the material. She won't just give you and A though you have to earn it but its possible as she gives you all the information you need to do so. I took her 6 wk summer class and had no problems with it.
Definitely requires studying!! Not an easy A by any means! However, this is one of the first classes that I feel has actually taught me valuable information for my future career in nursing. Study the powerpoints and homeworks and you will pass. How well you pass (C,B or A) simply depends on how much you study.
Not any easy course, so you really have to earn your grade. Weekly homework, weekly online quiz. To get an A: attend class, do the test review and memorize every word on the practical review. Very intelligent professor, challenges her students.
Prof. Speer is amazing. Anatomy is not easy but she provides the resources to make it as easy as possible. HW, post lab quizzes and coloring sheets, and even a few extra credit questions. Use the hw to study for exams. They help A LOT!!!You have to study to make the grade and she is willing to help you as long as you are willing to put in the work.
Pros: knowledgable, helpful, A's are possible but few. Cons: a ton of work(every week, assignment, pre lab, lab report, and lab quiz) Test based on reviews=more work. Overall Speer will prepare you for higher level phys. The course work makes taking additional classes hard. Prof. Speer states on the 1st day this class should be taken alone.
I dread science therefore waited last minute to take this class. Let me say , by far, she's the best ever. PowerPoint notes and explanations were always clear. Her test straightforward no tricks. And xtra credit is given a lot. Homework helps you understand material. take notes and study you will be fine.
DO NOT take her class if you have a life. If you miss a single test deadline no matter how good you've been doing and despite contacting her to let her know the reason, she WILL DROP YOU. "Too bad so sad", she doesn't care. You now have to retake and repay for this class because she doesn't allow retakes
I was going to florida the first week of class and planned on taking the exam early. She did not have the first exam ready in the 5 week course. Called and she would not allow me to take it a day late and blamed it on me for not telling her I was going to florida. Have never come across a distance learning course that does not allow early testing.
Only take her if you are really comfortable with the subject. You will learn a lot but be prepared to WORK WORK WORK and then some. She is rude and gets personal so don't ask her questions, ask the tutors if you need help. Will prepare you for nursing school but don't take with other classes. NO JOKE. Make her a last resort.
A little too stringent for a community college instructor teaching a required science course.
Be ready to be busy, there’s a lot information you have to learn (I took a 6wk online class) and there are only 45 questions on the test, some of them are from the discussion boards where you have to watch extensive pbs videos and some are off the “study guide” (3 written questions). It can be a lot if you put it off to the last second, so don't.
I took this class in the spring of 2013 and I can honestly say, she was one of the best. It was not BY ANY MEANS an easy course. She is very thorough, and very serious. I am currently in nursing school and am referring back to my notes from her class daily! Take her if you're serious about understanding the material and WILLING TO STUDY A LOT!!!
She is my DIL professor and upon inquiring as to how I could better improve my study skills to improve my test scores I was told that perhaps DIL is not for me and I should consider taking the class in an actual classroom so I would have a teacher to better explain things to me. Well, I am pretty this class does have a teacher and that she was just all too uninterested in actually teaching her students anything. I've now made it my personal mission to excel in this class, however.
She is very clear about what she expects and gives you all the information you need to make A's on tests. The book is more of a supliment and she provides most of the information you need to know through lecture. She does not encourage students to ask questions and can be demening. If you can get over her attitude she is a great professor.
Do not take this professor. Anatomy is already a difficult class with a lot of information and having her as a professor made it even worse. She is not helpful, exams are extremely difficult. Possibly ANY other professor would be a better choice.
I don't recommend taking this instructor. Anatomy is already a difficult class with a lot of information and having her as a professor made it even worse. She is not helpful, exams are extremely difficult. She is not approachable and is rude, her grading is very stringent.
Professor Speer is great! She provided tons of resources to help me be successful in her class. The required workload was heavy, so be prepared to put in the required study time. Bernice Speer will help to prepare you for whatever program you are interested in. I would take her class again.
This professor is very knowledgeable and you will be prepared to move forward into your programs if your willing to to WORK. Her class is no joke. Lots of studying is required or you'll not succeed. She can also be rude so thick skin is required. Get past that and you'll learn a lot.
I thoroughly enjoyed the class curriculum. I took the online class and there was LOTS of studying and work to do in order to be prepared for the tests. But if you watch the videos, take copious notes in the study guide and study for the tests you should do fine.
Love the class. She can be demeaning when you ask questions or don't understand something. Do every review sheet for every unit. Do all the homeworks and quizzes, she won't remind you! Extra credit built into every test. Very anal about spelling on practicals. Exams and practicals same day. I recommend her if you want to learn. She knows her stuff.
Lots of stuff to do every week but, I work 40+ hrs and take 10 hrs coursework and I know I'll probably get a B. Taking this currently and enjoying it! Watch videos every week, post in discussions, do homework and answer the study guide. It really is laid out there for you and the tests are easy if you just do everything else. Can easily get an A.
Took the class online. Prof Speer provides a study guide that if you follow religiously, you can't go wrong. Biweekly discussion groups and one homework for each test. There is a test every two weeks, which makes it easier to keep up with the material. Very well organized class, and the tests were very straight forward.
Do the reviews, homework and review lecture slides and you should do great on the tests. She is not the easiest professor to talk to if she's feeling snippy, but overall she really aims to help you, no matter if its staying after class to help you with a password or if it's using straws to mimic different muscle fascia coverings.
This was a great class. Professor Speer clearly explains what we need to know and why, and I learned a LOT. Apply yourself and you won't be disappointed! I loved the material, studied and got an A with no problem. Professor Speer really knows her stuff. She might be more demanding than other profs, but it's worth it to really learn.
Professor Speer has a very interactive teaching style. She gives great analogies and different tips for learning some tough material. She can be snippy and very curt sometimes. Her tests are difficult and critical thinking is involved in many of her questions. She's tough but good.
Would not take her again. She stated at the start of Anatomy to follow the objectives and you would do well. Not true. You do learn a lot because you have to study a lot. The people in the class that made A's did not work or only took her class and no others. Better professors at ACC.
I like her because she is very organized and post material or assignment early so you can prepare early and make plan. I had 5 exams plus mandatory final, also had assignment and small quiz every week. It was tough and busy but you can learn a lot from this class.
She's organized but she doesn't give a study guide so you have to study everything. It made the class harder than I expected. You HAVE to study to pass her test. She makes you work for your grade. You get 5 exams and the final is optional and she does give extra credit. Do the work and you'll be fine
I've never done so much work in an online class before. Be ready to work 4+ hours a day if you want a good grade. Do the study guide, discussion topics, HW & make flash cards. Difficult class because of the workload not because the material is hard. This is NOT a blowoff class so if you think you will get by with minimal work, you won't.
She knows her stuff and you better know it too. Lots of homework, reading, quizes, pre labs ,labwork assignments, physiox, studying for test and more. Need to spend 5 hours everyday in order to pass with a C. Grades super hard (takes points for everything)she teaches you at school plus will give you pp for you to learn at home. DONT TAKE HER.
Honestly I thought Professor Speer was great! Yes, there is a lot of work but, she is extremely fair. Tests were a bit challenging. You use a study guide along w/ videos. She responds to emails promptly and she has office hours available to call or go by. She was great if you reach out to her especially when I did her course as a DL.
I took this as an online class because I am a stay at home mom. Not only does she make you go to an ACC campus to take your Exams (which are every other week) but she does not provide a study guide at all! The reason for taking an online class was to be able to do online work, not have to TRAVEL to a testing center!
A very concise & straight forward science prof. Most of her exams requires you to know the basic info & APPLY it (she loves application questions). Do the assignments, practice hw, read the pp slides, & you'll be fine. Lots of work & time is involved but the info retained is valuable. Not a course for the faint of heart or procrastinator.
She is a tough cookie but if you make it though the class, even if you are failing or not getting the grade you want stick it out, you will walkout knowing all the topics. Lots of homework but questions for lecture tests come from them. Helps you to retain the information. She is big on spelling. Get anatomy flashcards and mastering AP; helpful.
Prof Speer is ok. She grades hard, lots of homework, lots of reading, lots of low grades, lot of points taken off, did i say lots of homework? quizzes, test, assignments. This class is already hard and she makes it even harder with all of the extra stuff. She will teach at school but also will give you stuff to learn at home. RUN AWAY.
I wouldn't take her unless I know enough to pass without a teacher. She grades hard and expects to know everything before you start. She does teach you but it will take two tries to pass her class.
Speer loves testing on the most random facts that she doesn't bother to go over in lecture or lab. She is extremely insensitive and completely unhelpful. A&P is considered a "weed-out" class, but Speer takes it to the next level by making it her personal goal to fail everyone in her class. This woman should not be allowed to teach.
Speer teaches at a mastery level. I think she forgets that she teaches at a community college to nursing and health science career students, not biologists. She grades at a masters university level and is unrealistic on how much you are expected to retain. She does not teach to the test. Do not take her if you have a chance.
Yes, professor Speer is not the easiest professor, but it's a college anatomy and physiology course, it is going to be a difficult course. Unlike some professors, she actually teaches and she is probably the most knowledgeable professor you can take for this course. You're going into healthcare, it shouldn't be a walk in the park. Just study.
I took her a non science major biology so I think it was a lot easier. SO if you're taking her for that I'd say do it. Do the homework and print out the PDF versions and do write out your answers. Read the parts of the textbook she tells you to, she doesnt make you read every chapter. she gives at least two extra credit opportunities.
Difficult grader and tests. However, all homework, quizzes & assignments through blackboard. You are able to submit and resubmit to get a perfect grade up until the time assignment is due. She answers emails quickly and will spend extra time to answer questions. Goes over written part of exam in detail. You actually have to study to do well!
Professor Speer is brilliant, she gives great lectures and is extremely knowledgable. She is a VERY tough grader. Her tests are difficult and you are expected to know ALL of the material. There are no reviews for tests or example questions. She is a challenging professor and you will work for your grade, but you will leave her class better for it.
Great Professor. Harder Class (Lots of information/memorization). I am going to take her again. She is very fair. Just know when your various assignments are due. Lectures are interesting and she keeps it that way. Labs are fun. You will know what you will be tested on.
Tough grader. Don't take her
YOU WILL LEARN. If you don't you will fail. Is that not what we are here for? Professor speer is an incredible teacher and if you are going into a healthcare career you should want to learn as much as possible. She will help you do this. Many people will drop. Too bad for them because prof. Speer is "fabulous" ;). Take her courses. Study. LEARN.
I took her online 1309 Biology 16 week class in Spring 2018. If you complete the study guide, read the assigned pages in the book, watch the videos, participate twice a week on the message board, and turn in your one homework assignment each week you will earn an A. She is a fair grader and gives extra credit. I spent 5 hours a week on her class.
I don't know what the negative reviews are for, she was AWESOME. Very willing to help you if you're willing to put in the work. Her tests are pretty straight forward and the homework can be redone online until you make a 100% which helps your grade a lot. Her lectures are interesting and she gives you the info in a way you can understand it.
I abhor science. It has always been a weakness of mine. She IS a tough grader, her test ARE difficult, she is VERY direct. It is not enough to "cruise"through this course, she puts you in a position to UNDERSTAND the information, and not just REMEMBER it. Do the homework, extra credit and don't wait to study to the end & you will pass!
Bernice provides her students with an experience to truly grasp the material she teaches. She doesnt merely teach to a test. She teaches you with a solid foundation to build on. Perfect for going into the medical field and retaining the information. An AMAZING teacher there for YOU when you put in the work and communicate with her.
Pros: She's very smart. Replaces lowest test grade with her final. Extra Credit Lab points is nice Cons: Goes off tangent, TOO much homework (90+ questions sometimes), does not test you on the main stuff, mostly on the nitty gritty. Makes you feel dumb if you don't participate in class.
Not very clear with directions. Lots of homework. Study guides dont help with test. DONT RECCOMEND THIS PROFESSOR
I took the online Living Planet course. If you're looking to do the same, here's some advice: Watch. The. Episodes! The tests are pretty specific about the episodes and the animals in them. Not too bad overall. 14 simple discussion boards, 5 tests (plus an optional final to replace a test grade), and 5 multiple choice hw assignments.
She is a very nice and genuine person. She is very strict which puts an emphasis on students to learn the materials. Be glad that she is who she says she is and cares about the students.
Speer is an awesome professor and makes learning Anatomy & Physiology easy when you pay attention to her lectures. Of course, you have to put in the work to do well in her class but she will reward you with the knowledge to tackle any healthcare profession. Very knowledgeable professor, always answered my questions with much detail.
Professor Speer is an amazing teacher. She gives lots of homework to make sure that you know your stuff by time the test comes around. She also takes the time to make handouts to help you learn. If you show interest and are responsive in class you will do well. She will stay after class to help you and will go over any missed test questions to help
Bernice was by far my favorite professor at ACC. Keep in mind college science classes are HARD. You get back what you put in. She is always more than willing to help you and make sure you understand the material and truly wants you to succeed. Go to open labs. Ask questions. Do the homework. 10/10 recommend her class if you truly want to learn.
I believe she is knowledgable and dedicated, but I do not recommend taking the classes on line with this professor. The material is random and scattered. Sometimes difficult to find the answers to study questions in the material provided. Test questions come out of left field and have little to do with the basic concepts of the material.
had an 89.02 and did not bump it up despite me working extremely hard all semester. Ridiculous amount of homework. narrated powerpoints help but sometimes become required to watch or else you will miss material that she won't mention in homework or lectures.
DONT TAKE HER! Lectures are bad. She expects you to already know the material before class. You gotta teach yourself EVERYTHING! Has no patiences to go over something with you and is honestly very disrespectful. One time she kicked all the students out of class because nobody knew an answer to a question. Gets upset quick and is super RUDE!!!
An already tough class and then Covid-19 came around and it became even tougher. She made the tests even harder since they were going to be taken at home. I know that summer 2020 if you take her class it will be online, but don't expect an easy blow off class. You have to do the homework, DB, read the book and complete the study guide to pass
The class is not difficult but it is a lot of work and there is a lot of material to cover. I took her 5-week online class and it was rough. The test goes over some stuff that may not be on the study guide but on the discussion board instead. I felt like doing the study guide only helped me with 50% of the test.
Her class was very difficult. Tons of Homework that averages 100 questions. She'll readily help you but can get frustrated if you don't understand the concept fully after she explains it. You need to really put in the work in order to pass. I wouldn't recommend her for online classes, she made tests super hard when class transitioned to online.
I didn't feel like I was being taught but I was being talked down to. When transitioning to online due to COVID she accused everyone of cheating on the first exam. The course was interesting and the material fun to learn, just not impressed with her class. requires multiple submissions on an online more; just tedious
A 27 page syllabus for an environmental class. Lol I've taken engineering/programming classes that are literally 100x harder than this class and the teachers were much more helpful and nice, you know the way teachers are supposed to be. She is disrespectful and tbh if you want to put up with her attitude than go ahead and waste your time and money.
I don't think anyone works harder than Professor Speer, especially during Covid. She is always contactable and replies to e-mails quickly. There is a lot of homework but it's just her way of making you see topics/ information over and over so you learn. It is advisable to do the reading before class but when is that not?!
Prof. Speer's low rating on here is inaccurate, at least in my experience. She's kind & responsive & takes care to make sure students' questions are answered. Won't get mad if you mess up. Gives lots of HW, but it's all straightforward & grading is very fair. Gives ample material for exam prep, tells you possible questions ahead of time. Love her!
YOU WANT TO LEARN A&P? Take Speer. Her lectures are detailed and structured but be prepared for lots of homework (it helps in the long run). She expects participation during class so prepare ahead of time. She can sometimes throw a bit of an attitude when students don't answer but she is very helpful if you need help with a concept. Take Speer.
A&P was hard for me b/c it's A LOT of material to remember and memorize in a short amount of time. The homeworks she gives hold you accountable in going over and learning the material. The HW takes a long time! But if you fully complete them, and then study them, you'll be prepared for the exams. She is excellent at being available for students!
Professor Speer is among the worst professors I have ever have in life. She is very disrespectful insinuating students are stupid. She doesn't care if you learn or pass the class. Her classes are boring and are not 1/4 of what is going to be on the test. She is very inpatient and doesn't like to help. Her tests are based on the hw.
Theres too much information and the tests are difficulty worded almost as to trick you.
If you want to build a solid foundation of a&p1, take Speer. Course is tough, but she knows what she is talking about and cares about you. Lots of hw. Strict on grading. Show up to lectures & labs, some work is only provided during those classes! READ the textbook. TAKE ADVANTAGE of the extra credit. Dedicate time to STUDY A LOT & watch lectures.
She is very well knowledgeable about what she teaches. She definitely cares about what she teaches, but she is very tough on grading. Participation is important but she does not provide a welcoming environment to make errors. One last thing, her homework assignments are very long.
She definitely loves the subject, but it feels as she expects you to do the same and focus only on her stuff. In the syllabus, she clearly states you need to put aside 13-21 hrs every week to study. (Unreasonable if you have a job as well). Tests are multiple choice. Tested Labs are write in. No word blank. Will be counted wrong if misspelled.
Professor Speer is definitely not for the faint of heart. She comes across very harsh, but I do believe she cares a lot. LOTS of homework, they are a very useful study tool. Test are both multiple choice and short answer She definitely expects you to watch her narrated lectures before coming to class. You will need to learn topics on your own.
This was the only class I took in the fall and yet I spent most of my hours studying. Speer is a great teacher, but her tests are hard. She words the tests in a way to make you really think about the material, I struggled with this. She can also have lots of attitude at time. Ask lots of questions and go to office hours for success in this class.
If you are debating on taking this class just for credit requirements, I would highly advise you not to. If you're planning on becoming a biologist, then sure I guess that makes sense. The weekly discussion assignments/homework aren't so bad if you just do it. The tests on the other hand are just unnecessarily difficult + are majority of your grade
Im not even halfway through the semester and I can tell that she is going to be on the list of professors I wouldnt take again. Very strict, seems a bit rude and the tests are extremely difficult. Would not recommend
If you don't want a big challenge or devote a lot of time to A&P then don't take this class. She assigns a ton of work and doesn't cover material fast enough in order to get ahead and make things more manageable. I found myself worrying about HW deadlines and catching up on required lecture vids then actually studying 4 the next exam. SO MUCH WORK!
I found this professor to be really difficult as far as how she teaches. Addition to lecture she requires you to watch narrated lectures multiples , and gives lots of homework (65+ Qs)each packet you have three for each unit. She doesnt give reviews. I found myself trying to play catch-up just to meet deadlines, not enough study time for exams.
Expects you to watch lectures outside of class in addition to having class. Tests are a bit confusing. Take if you have extra time outside of class as homework is very long in addition to having other class assignments due.
Do not take this professor. Requires you to watch HOURS of prerecorded lecture videos outside of class or you will fail the exams. Questions on exams are worded so you don't understand what is being asked. Comprehensive final is required. Lots of memorization. No curve. You won't learn more with her, you will be overwhelmed with info.
I feel so bad saying this but I have never had such a bad experience. this class is already hard enough and we all are trying our best.her lecture material is very confusing, and she embarrassed multiple students in class. She is not someone you should take if you are sensitive. only 8 finished the semester but did they pass?
Speer is a supportive, understanding, & great professor. She goes over content in great detail. In order to pass this class you need to WORK HARD. It is not an easy grade kind of class. Make sure to read the textbook, do the hw (use to study for tests), and take advantage of the extra credit! It's a lot of work but it'll help you in the long run.
If all teachers were like this I would just quit. Don't take this prof. She hasn't responded to my emails and this is the most complex class I've ever taken.
Avoid this one, she made a lecture heavy bio class with betsy maxium. I assume they'll both be difficult. She makes you film yourself doing tests, they are hard. Prep time for tests is higher than i've ever experienced. I would not take this class. In fact, it's the worst class i have ever taken.
There were more questions in relation to stuff on the extra credit quizzes than stuff in the concept quizzes. There is excessive memorization and it's not conducive to learning. She will go over concepts intensely and then test mainly on briefly discussed concepts. Expects you to memorize everything on study guide that can be as long as 25 pages.
First of all I want to say her online class was extremely HARD! The way she organized the course content in Blackboard is difficult to follow you have to jump from folder to folder to get one thing done. Her tests are difficult and she makes them very confusing. My advice to you is to not take any of her classes because you will be sorry. No joke!
AMAZING! She is so supportive. The entire department is well-organized. You will get a LOT of material, but, there are step-by-step guides referred to as "Road Maps" that keep you on track. You can expect to sacrifice about 12-16 hours a week. That doesn't include studying. Would not take with full course load!!
Professor is extremely rude and condescending. She gives lots of homework. 1 hw assignment had over 100 questions and you can only get up to 10 points. The unit exams and practicals make up most of your grade so you better pass them with flying colors. You have to watch videos on lecture and lab before class the day before and they can be 1 hr
She is a difficult person. She finds ways to make sure you cannot score a 100 on her tests (she will find a way to -1). She is also very kind and the best teacher of things I've ever had. I would definitely like an easier going person though. I would sacrifice organization and learning for some ease of a human.
The good- professor Speer is passionate. She went above and beyond to meet with me when I needed help. The bad- NO clear study guide for exams. Exams are ridiculously hard and unclearly worded. Professor will make you feel stupid if you ask questions but she expects participation. Overall- you will learn, but you will have to teach yourself.
Horrible organization. For test she will FIND something to take a point off for. Very tough grader & super nit picky on answers. Will take points off for punctuation, even if answer is correct, work has to be proper too. Test Qs are very confusing and trying to trick you. Very rude and mean when you ask a question or dont understanding. DONT TAKE!
Bernice is an amazing and honest professor who is focused on helping students understand how to succeed now and in the future. While the material is difficult, Bernice is passionate about the material. While tough, it's to ensure that people going into the medical profession understand what they're doing. One of my favorite teachers at ACC.
Speer's class is challenging, but engaging. Her teaching style requires diligence, but the content is valuable. Use resources like Unstuck AI and office hours to excel.
The workload is heavy, but with study guides, you can do well. The course includes 5 homework assignments, 5 exams, and 5 discussion posts. You must write 3 original posts for the discussion posts and respond to at least 2 other students. There's also an optional final exam that can replace your lowest exam grade, which is a helpful opportunity.
I like that her class included a second teacher to give the lecture. this was nice because her class was online. both her and her associate were extremely knowledgeable, clear, and concise. I wish she offered other classes than biology.
My first semester at ACC was ruined by this extremely rude and unprofessional professor. This professor was dismissive, impatient, and condescending. My questions were often met with disrespect rather than helpful explanations. Professors should inspire and support students, not make them feel unwelcome. Don't take this professor!!!
Professor Speer is actually really great, contrary to a lot of these reviews. Yeah, she can be blunt at times, but in most cases it was deserved. The class is difficult, so be prepared to study a LOT. Take advantage of the extra credit, stay for the entire, and try not to miss class if at all possible. You'll pass if you put in the work.
Interesting teaching style. I would depend too much on the slides as its just diagrams and no actual explanations. She's hostile when you ask questions. She knows a lot, but she makes you feel small when you ask anything. She can be funny. It falls a bit flat.
She's a tough grader, and her lecture exams are incredibly challenging. Despite this, I managed to pass A&P 1 with an A, which speaks volumes about her teaching abilities. However, she's also quite rude and dismissive when students ask questions. In my opinion, I strongly advise against taking her class.
Unrealistic memorization required of material. No critical thinking at all. Just memorization all the time. Stay away!! For a non major class expectations are unrealistic. class average is c with a lot of drop-puts. This class needs to be peered reviewed by other professors.
Great professor! Course material is genuinely interesting, and she goes above and beyond to make sure students are prepared. It's not an easy A, and there's a good amount of work, but the feedback is excellent. The course is clear, organized, and worth the effort.
I have never had to do so much work for one class. There's on average 10-15 “concept check quizzes” for every unit and each unit has 4 subunits with about 6 parts per subunit. It's an unrealistic amount of work. Even with doing all of the work the exams are still difficult. My lowest grade I've ever received in school.
Bernice is one of the better teachers I've had at ACC. The workload is heavier than average, but completely manageable. She can be a little nitpicky when it comes to grading free-response questions but if you know the content this won't hurt your grade. If you don't have good study habits then this class is a great opportunity to learn them.
Ridiculous amount of material to memorize. No clear idea specified for exams. I suspect they put amount of material to get student to drop class for less student to grade exams for. Almost impossible to get a A. Get ready to study as if you are taking 3 or 4 classes.
