Liek others have said, his class is really casual. The typical class is just discussing whatever we were supposed to read; class on average probably ended about 20 minutes early too. He was really nice and helpful. He gave plenty of time to complete everything he assigned.

very fun teacher. very interesting classes. very fun and easy as long as you come and know what is going on. you get to rewrite your papers if you do bad so there is no reason not to get an A if you really want one. u get out early a lot too. ++++

Smiley is by far the BEST teacher at the college. And for an english teacher, he very intelligent, and knows alot about stuff you never new existed. If you didnt make an A on his paper, its because you didn't talk enough about sex, drugs, and death. I just wish he tought American Lit.

He reminds me of Rob Zombie by looks, he is so down to earth and I loved taking his class in the morning because it always put me in a good mood for the rest of the day. He is one of those professors that you will never want to forget, he's truely inspiring.

Mr. Smiley is a great teacher. Being in his class was one of the best experiences I have had so far. He is a hippy that has traveled the world, literally. You can go to his office to ask questions, he's very open. Ask him about juggling, he gives extra credit if you learn, its hard but keep at it. He's very animated, its hilarious.

I actually looked forward to his class- makes the course extremely interesting and amusing.

I loved this class! The lectures were sooooo interesting, and I looked forward to his class. He always allowed the students to decide how the tests would be set up (take home essay or multiple choice), and he is very helpful. Smiley is a great guy!

Amazing teacher. Not only does he make sure you know what is happening in the book, but will actually relate them to your life so you can better understand. You are a fool if you don't take this class.

Dr. Smiley is to this day the best professor I have ever had and I just finished up my first year at Baylor. I don't know how he does it but he gets you into the material and makes you love what you're doing. He is an incredible professor. He has a great personality and I would recommend his class to all! :)

Mr. Smiley is the best English teacher ever. I do not like English but he changed that. He was excellent when he taught me in high school and even more excellent in college. I took him for English 1301 & 1302 and received an A+ for both classes. Impossible to fail his class.

Take his night class.This man has memorized Shakespear front to back. Made 1302 a breeze .He tells you what to expect from day one.

Very interesting teaching method but it works.

I took Dr. Smiley a few years ago through a Dual credit course. This professor has had a tremendous influence on my entire college experience. Smiley is by far the best English Professor in the WORLD! I appreciate him so much for making Shakespeare understandable and not difficult! I would recommend him anytime.

It is because of this guy that I managed to turn one of my worst skills in grade school (writing papers) into one of my best. He makes his English classes fun, very comprehensible and easy to catch up with. He is also an agreeable person so turning in your assignments on time should not be too much of a problem.

AWESOME! He is a great professor. His class was never boring and he was always willing to help. Do not cheap or he will fail you in a skinny minute with pleasure. Go to class and work hard on your papers and you'll be fine.

Dr. Smiley is the best professor at COM. His classes are very interesting and he knows his stuff. He gives lots of written assignments, and usually lets you rewrite it for a higher grade. Take him if you have the chance.

Dr. Smiley is an amazing professor! I learned so much in his class, even stuff other than English. He is VERY smart, and uses real life, funny examples to everything he teaches. His class is fun, and entertaining. I would recommend to this course to ANYONE!

Dr. Smiley is GREAT! I had him for both 1301 and 1302 and I had an awesome time in them both and I hate English. He is very helpful and so funny! He always has real world connections he relates us to, and cool pictures to go along because he is a travel nut! Highly Recommend.

The best teacher that I have ever had at College of the Mainland. Very engaging, knows alot about what he teaches, does not accept slackers and/or lazy people. He worked with me and my problems and although I didn't get an A, it was not because he was hard on me it was because of my lack of effort. I would take him for every class if i could! :)

He doesn't just read the story, he tells you the background and every detail possible that influences it. He plays out the reading. I felt as if I was there, in the story, when he read. Thanks to him I finally learned how to juggle. I would take him again if I could.

I loved this professor! A lot of papers, but he lets you do re-writes if you do poorly on them. Also gives extra credit and helps you understands readings that are assigned

Professor Smiley helps you establish the tools you need to succeed at a higher level. If you're having difficulties he will talk you through it. He honestly doesn't care if you come to class; if you do he is more willing to help you. You are graded on class performance, but he is so funny it's hard to not perform. I look forward to 1302 with him.

Smiley is a joy to have class with! The reading assignments are enjoyable, thought-provoking pieces and the writing assignments very closely corresponded to our in-class discussions and reviews. As long as you pay attention in class and stay caught up on work, the tests are easy. Extra credit was offered to my class: learning to juggle!

Do the essays and really try! Easy class for an A! Just make sure you do the essay. Has GREAT feedback and so helpful.

One of the very few professors that show their students that he cares. He gives every opportunity to make the grade. Show up, participate, and use your brain, your will be good. He's overall a really nice professor and he'll help you out with anything as long as you show that you care for the class. I've take him twice and honestly I would love him to be a teacher in every subject but well.

Very easy!!! All you need for English 1302 is a book on Shakespeare and Frankenstein. He is very cool and very down to earth. We did a total of 3 papers that included the midterm and final.

Amazing professor. Lectures were fantastic. He made writing papers incredibly easy. ENGL 1301 - no text. 4 papers that he made incredibly easy. ENGL 1302 - 2 books: Frankenstein and Hamlet (I paid maybe $10 for both).

Awesome professor. Essays are simple and he gives you a lot of room to improve yourself. You wind up learning a lot more outside of just English with Smiley. 1301 is all about research & 1302 focuses on reading (Hamlet and Frankenstein). Has in depth class discussions to make sure you know what is going on. Show up and do what he says, you'll pass.

Absolutely wonderful! I've had the pleasure of having him for two classes and if I could take him for every class I would! Go to class he makes it super fun and interesting and follow the readings and you should pass! Loved getting to learn about zombies and vampires!

Smiley is the best professor at COM. I recommend taking him for regular sessions as well as mini-sessions. As long as you show up, you should be fine. He provides excellent feedback and allows you to correct parts of your midterms/finals. His class is enjoyable.

Smiley is a gem. Instead of focusing on a textbook, he focuses on learning and finding the issues with your writing and teaching you how to fix/avoid such issues. His grading criteria is very clear and he wants his students to succeed. Word of warning, he is known to roast people for showing up late.

What can I say about Dr. Smiley? He is the best! I took him for Comp2 in a five-week class. When I saw Hamlet and Frankenstein, I wasn't excited. Smiley is realistic from the start, he goes over 50 important people, 1 quiz, & 1 research paper. occasionally class discussions which are enjoyable. goes over someone's paper after every submission date to give class insight. you can get away with skipping & not asking questions but you'd be playing yourself. its as simple as it gets.

Smiley is an absolute great professor, he doesn't beat around the bush, will tell you if something will be on an exam and hilarious. I've learned more from him than I expected. He knows how to break down concepts for the simple minded. I only wish I could take another class for him again because it was that good. His stories are phenomenal.

Honestly, this is the best professor I've had. He makes the lectures so enjoyable that they don't even feel like you're in the class for hours. He goes over the literature like he's genuinely passionate about it and makes it very easy to understand. He can be a tough grader but always gives feedback and opportunities to re-submit for better grades.

I am not the type of person who loves English. However, even through my own difficulty, Professor Smiley was one of the best professors. He was always open for whatever questions we had and gave an easy class. If you ever go to College of the Mainland, he is the teacher you should strive to get.

I absolutely loved having Dr. Smiley. He is very knowledgeable and hilarious. He teaches you how to write and then builds upon what he has taught you throughout the semester. We wrote four papers throughout the semester and he gave very helpful feedback along the way. Overall I would 10/10 recommend taking his class if you have the opportunity.

I have NEVER had fun in any english class nor have i enjoyed it, but i absolutely loved doctor Smiley. He genuinely feels like a friend when you take his class, I would take something like his zombie lit class just for fun!!

One of the best teachers I've had — took him for two semesters and again for literature. Always positive and kind. Even if you're late with an assignment, he'll still review it and give you a chance to complete it.
