This teacher was awesome. The class was fun and interesting. There is work, but most of it is in class. And only two papers to write. Not bad. Lectures are long, and he can talk a bit fast, all you have to do is just ask him to slow down. Great class/teacher!
This professor truly believes in his student's success. He is funny, intelligent, and has tons of real life experience which he brings into the classroom. A great class for sure. You won't be sorry.
Man was this class fun! A good looking prof (no way he's 45!) who really has alot of real world experience that he brings straight into the class. You will take alot of notes but you learn SO MUCH. Plus he makes the learning fun and I actually looked forward to giong to class. I recommend this prof to anyone that wants to learn.
He is an Awesome professor, if you do not understand the work he will help you out no questions asked. Great guy, I would so have him as a professor again!!!!
Don't take his on-line course. He has computer problems regularly and doesn't understand that without meeting him face to face, certain instructions need repeating, not just a reference in the beginning of the first class. He literally flunked people who had completed work correctly simply for putting an assignment in the wrong folder.
Tested on information that was not covered during class. Much watching of movies. Little actual use of the book.
Really good teacher and a fun guy to take a class with. He is clear in what he wants you to know and knows what he is teaching. Grades a little tougher than most teachers but if you work hard at it you can still get an "A" fairly easy.
Classes are easy if you are paying attention and are in class. His classes are fun, and he is very knowledgable -
Professor did not adhere to syllabus. Docked points from students when he was the one to deviate from the syllabus. Difficult to approach. Rude. Failed to interact with students in discussions as compared to other instructors. Inadequate. Difficult to contact. Save yourself time and money and PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not take this instructor.
Very down to earth, informative, makes classes interesting. A bit intimidating but eh, that comes with the territory.
Bert is a fantastic teacher. Very knowledgeable and class is a lot of fun. Tests are easy if you read over the material and pay close attention to details. He doesn't use a textbook at all, and tells students not to bother buying it. He is always available to help with questions or course planning. a GREAT teacher.
AWESOME teacher.... best class I've taken in a while!
Very good experience. I took online and learned alot. The class moved through the material without a lot of hassle. Definitely recommend this instructor!
Phenomenal professor.... has tons of experience in his field, and has great stories to share. Far more interesting to hear real-life experiences than reading stories in a text-book.
One of the Best Classes ever!!
Has good stories and the class is easy to understand and straight foward. Great field experiance and has a life outside of class and loves to talk about it.
Tests are random and have trick questions so you might know the answer but his goal is to trick you which makes him suck.He changes the calender and syllabus almost daily.
really cares about students. if you care about your grade so does he. willing to answer questions and gives out his phone number to summer classes. real life experiences supplement stupid text book examples. learned more in one semester of bert's classes than i did in two years of other teachers. enough so i took two of his summer classes.
Great teacher!! Knows what he is talking about. Your hear to learn , so if you don't want to, go to another class. simple and to the point. Yes, very little use of textbook, easy to understand, do what he says, follow his instructions and you will pass with knowledge and a great grade!!!
If you show up to class, study for quizzes and do assignments very easy classes. You must do power point presentation and paper in most of his classes. Best teacher I have had!!!!!
His online course is a joke! He is very unprofessional and clearly does not put ANY effort into his online class website. Too late to change to another class so I will stick it out. He gives no CLEAR due dates on assignments and does not really incorporate the text book (should have saved my $80 for something useful). Instructor sucks
His classes are fun, states In the beginning that there is minimal work, Don't buy the text book you don't use It he tells you not to buy it at all, He knows what he's talking about, He does try and trick you on the tests, but they aren't too hard, coolest teacher ever taking all of his classes, Definately reccommended!
For the most part he's an easy prof! You do have to do a paper and powerpoint presentation for almost every class he teaches. He's a no BS type of guy, so if you are lazy, prob not for you. BUT he has real life experience and is way interesting! and easy on the eyes :]
Awesome teacher and is very knowledgable about the law. Be sure to be ready to do a term paper and power point presentation, and make sure that you know your stuff when giving it, if you don't he will call you on it. Also be sure to not buy the book. He doesn't use.
BErt is a great teacher. No BS kind of guy and definently has a passion for what he is teaching. Lots of real world experience and stories. Pay attention and put effort into papers and power point. Tests are straight forward if you pay attention in class. Take notes. Great class overall. -Taylor
DON'T BUY THE BOOK! He doesn't use it. Great teacher though, knows his stuff and doesn't put up with **** (ex Marine). Does require presentations and papers, but as long as you put effort into you'll be fine. I recomend a lap top though, you will take a lot of notes, I took two of his classes before figuring that out.
Tough but somewhat fair.
I am very sorry but, DO NOT BUY INTO ALL THIS "Great Teacher". I can think of about 4 other department faculty that would be so much better at running the dept. If you enter the class thinking that this is awesome just wait, it will change quick. This teacher runs in and out of the class like crazy. Im sorry but if there is another teacher USE.
Never used the book but told us to buy it. Took points off presentations, papers, and power points for the littlest things or if ou pt the ifo in spot where it wasn't convenient for him he takes points off. He went in and out of the class every 5 minutes. His quizzes were ridiculous he had to give us points back cause he messed up so much.
I really enjoyed this class & agree with most comments - if you participate, put in effort & follow instructions, you'll do fine. Lots of chances to improve grade. Prior military work well with him. He sets out his expectations; may adapt his syllabus as needed. Tip: arguing with him is pointless. Doesn't use textbook for lecture; save your $.
No text for this class. Quizzes were a little tricky and if you didn't pay attention to the wording it could mess you up. Interesting class to say the least and everyone should take it. I'm a bio. sciences major and I thought it was interesting. Final project is hard: DO NOT PROCRASTINATE ON IT. Takes points off it for the littlest things.
Class topics were interesting, I did learn more about forensics than I knew going into the class. I thought the instructor was way to hardcore, seemed like he was more interested in tricking you than helping you but if you're taking AJS classes, you can't avoid getting him for one or more. Good Luck.
This is my fourth class with Bert, and I would recommend him despite what others say. I've taken his classes both on campus and online, and they're been great. The quizzes can be a bit tricky, but so long as you pay attention to wording and read the chapters as directed, you'll be fine.
The course seemed straightforward, but unfortunately since it was online, it was difficult to be sure of how he reacts to responses. Also don't turn anything late, if something is late by a minute, literally one minute, he'll be rigid and show no leniency because it's 60 or less than 60 seconds late.
Interesting class and good professor, but tests/quizzes are very tricky. Do the work, turn it in on time, and you'll be fine. To those complaining about him not taking late work: you have a week to complete assignments, you also are warned. This is college...no one is going to hold your hand.
Ick!!! He is the worst grader ever. I can't believe how many discussions he docked points only simply because I (or someone else) didn't put what he wanted. Seems easy, but he's a harsh grader.
Not always clear with instructions. Former marine, masters in forensics, former investigator. A lot of power points. No room for error with him but not a bad guy. Your a college student and he expects you to realize that.
Bert is a really interesting dude, he's been around. His class is very informative and he has story's about everything. I learned a lot but its a very tricky class not a walk in the park.
WORST TEACHER EVER! He doesn't explain things and expects you to know what he wants when you do the assignment. Don't use him! I have never had a teacher that makes me so mad. I tried him a second time thinking maybe the first was just a flop, but nope... he's the worst I've ever had
Worst Teacher ever. should reconsider being a teacher or even a person who deals with others. does not communicate, does not have due dates entered correctly, then gives zeros when you follow the due date listed. never take a class with this teacher. i pray he reads this to, he need to know what a joke he is
VERY conflicting and confusing instructions and due dates. Several students were confused for the first several weeks of a summer session about expectations. When pointed out his inconsistencies, was told too bad or didn't reply. Assignments consisted of discussions, quizzes, term paper and final.
This class can be super difficult. Make sure to pay attention during the power points. Be sure to write everything he says!! He tends to say things and forget that he said them, then when you ask about it he'll reply "I'd never say that." Especially with due dates. PS! If you don't know APA learn it now! Bad formatbad grade on paper.
Prof. Ouderkirk was an excellent teacher for this course. Made his expectations very clear and when they were completed he gave praise. Told many interesting stories the certainly pertained to the material being taught. Seems like a lot of the material was common sense, not really hard. Some people don't wok well with a teacher like him, guess Ido
Burt is an awesome teacher. He was in the Marines for years so he is a hard at times, but overall a really great professor. Make sure you take notes! He doesn't post anything online. His classes are always interesting and he makes them fun. He's a no bull kind of guy. If you put in the work, you'll pass for sure.
This teacher is horrible. DO NOT be fooled by the class title; you will ruin your GPA if you take this class. His syllabus is confusing, he doesn't know how to work canvas and change dates. He harps on APA format like he just learned it one year ago. DO NOT take this class.
This guy was the worse teacher I have ever had. Unhelpful and wants to be this tough Marine but he makes the class out to be a joke. Its so much he could do to make this class successful but yet he would rather take the easy road and make you write discussions in APA. Don't be fooled by the name of this class, this class is not fun.
The material for the class is interesting, but his requirements for assignments are ridiculous! I love this field and these subject and have aced my other classes, but his class is making me want to change my major. Never have I had a professor that gave homework and a quiz over spring break then proceeded to take 3 weeks to grade anything!
He lays out what he expects from us in his syllabus and if you follow that to the T-you will be great. He lays it all out and if you follow it, you will get A! I took fall class and will do a summer class and plan on getting an A because I know now how to follow that syllabus! He is a strong leader!
Despite what other people have said. I think Prof. Ouderkirk was very clear. Everything is explained in the syllabus he hands out. There are 4 quizzes (10 Q's ea.-easy) a final exam and project. (no hw) Be ready to put a lot of time in on the project, your grade relies on it- it's really easy, it just takes time. There's also lots of extra credit.
Bert is a good teacher, I have taken him plenty of times. Because I have taken him many times, I understand his testing. He likes to confuse you on test! (Pay attention to spelling for answers!) other than that he really is a good teacher and gives good feedback. If someone thing isn't made clear to you ASK he will respond.
I took the 4 week course. Only 4 test, easy to complete if you read the book. Read the syllabus he won't remind you when things will be different. I failed because he does not like to give out friendly reminders for the students with busy lives.
If you take this class online so you have room for things outside of college (work, fun, etc.), do not expect to pass. He has a 0 leniency 0 tolerance policy. If you take this class, plan on following his syllabus to the letter. Also read the syllabus thoroughly he tends to hide important information in there. (due dates, etc.)
Hands down the best professor I ever had. I had him for every class available simply because there was so much to learn from him. He teaches from experience and has so many interesting stories. He is also very sarcastic so if you're sensitive to criticism (he tells it like it is) don't take him. Never a dull moment, lots of hands on practice!
If you are expecting to not participate or follow the syllabus do not expect an A! Everything is outlined in the syllabus and what is expected. The assignments are fun and you will learn new things. He is not as bad as everyone makes him out to be.
He is a HORRIBLE emailer. Not helpful at all, AVOID.
Syllabus is confusing. He expects you to know what it says and means and when asked to clarify he just says to "read the syllabus." I've had previous online courses and those professors seemed more helpful than he was. Would not recommend at all!
Just awful. Syllabus was a mess, I asked 5 honor roll students to decipher what was expected and came up with 5 different replies. Don't expect the teacher to tell you either, he seems to get off on seeing his students struggle. Weekly quizzes don't offer anything educational, just trick, true/false questions that are usually half true. AVOID.
Horrible instructor. Syllabus is impossible to figure out. He uses a lot of a trick questions in his tests. He gets off on arguing with his students and having control over them. He won't admit when he's wrong.
This was the toughest grading I've ever seen. If you miss a comma you will get a 10/40. It is insane. I took this class as an "Easy A" elective and it ended up being one of my most time consuming classes. You have to do your assignments on specific days and the assignments don't open until they are almost due. Interesting class but bad teacher.
I had this professor 12 years ago, and I still talk about him! Best educator that I have ever had. Memorable, and awesome! Very hands on, and makes learning so enjoyable! Absolutely recommend him to EVERYONE!
Very understanding. Kept online class interesting.
Professor ouedekirk is by far the best professor i have had. He is fair, tough but very fair. His work is simple to understand. If you read the book you will pass. Simple as that. The term papers are simple and he makes it easy to go about completing them in a way to get a good grade. He gives praise and amazing feedback. Highly recommend!!!!!
I have taken all of Bert's classes and he is very strict but willing to work with you if you put in the effort. My main piece of advice is follow the rubric/syllabus to a T. He loves PERFECT APA format. He provides resources to follow and if you follow them correctly, you will succeed. Read quiz questions thoroughly, he likes to trick us.
Don't expect any answers from him, he doesn't like to answer questions. IF his assignment and syllabus was as wonderful as he thinks, then why are so many people doing it different ways? Instead of telling you the first time you make a mistake he let's you do it again, and then tells you it is wrong. Then when asked for clarification he belittles.
Not that that much work but is an extremely hard grader so be aware of that
Great class. Took it online, which consists of discussion questions and a quick quiz each week as well as a term paper and final test (all tests are T/F, but read everything very carefully). You will need to read the book and do some online research. I spent 3 hours per week on homework. Prof. is quick to respond to emails and a fair grader.
Easy to contact for sure. The discussion board format instructions were unclear as maybe 1 or 2 of the students followed them on the discussion boards and only after he had to state them again in an email during week 2. In attempting to address the unclear instructions, it felt like my concern fell on deaf ears. Do the work his way and pass.
While i do not mind the strict grading as i have had stricter professors in the past, he does not respond and when i brought up that self defense does not always end when the party can not retreat due to Stand Your Ground in 20 states i did not receive a response. There was also no assignment for paper topics he expects you to KNOW to canvas mail.
he ruined my excitement for the class and tried to drop me multiple times. If i missed class with solid reasons or show up even a minute after class started he would either kick me out or talk to me about dropping me. he talks about him self to much and grades way to hard, hell give you a hundred assignments and take weeks to grade. worst teacher
Ouderkirk is THE MAN. He is an amazing teacher and makes the class way more interesting because of his own personal experiences. Barely any homework but tests are true or false so take notes and study. Only hard thing was the cerial killer scrap book but if you work hard and actually put work into it he will give extra credit and keep it! Amazing.
Amazing professor. Have to be present for all exercises (i think there are 9) and all quizzes (4). Some notes, a lot of videos/movies. Talks a lot about his life, very interesting. Loved this class!! Easy and fun.
Probably one of the worst professors I've ever had. His syllabus is not well-written and can be very confusing. He needs room for stepping out of his own box and way of thinking. Not empathetic. A scary class to take if you need for credit because it honestly feels like I'm not going to pass. Instead of graduating look forward to another semester
The syllabus is extremely confusing to read. Discussion questions were too specific to respond to classmates with engaging feedback. Misspells words all the time. Quizzes filled with trick questions and not informative ones. Avoid if possible!
Was dropped from class for being a couple hours late on an assignment. I was not given the option to remain in class even after assignment submission. He told me I missed the entire first week (what?), which is interesting, because I did all introductory assignments and purchased the book. Rude guy, and would never recommend. Very poor character.
I loved Mr. Ouderkirks class! He is helpful and insightful and has much experience in criminal justice. He does follow strict APA format but provides many resources for you to succeed. Expect to read the book and also research diverse outside sources. Test questions are very tricky so you much understand the material thoroughly.
I absolutely LOVE Bert!! He's such an amazing professor (and person!!). I have taken him the past three semesters and I could not ask for anyone better. He gives extra credit, assignments are easy, rarely any tests, and he has so many different hands-on exercises. I would recommend Bert to everyone!!!
This professor is one of the most lazy and unhelpful professors I've ever had. He gave me half credit for a discussion post because I didn't put the person's name on it who I was responding to even though he never said anything about that. His syllabus is extremely confusing. He is not helpful at all
If you don't like going out to buy stuff for projects don't take this class. Also, quizzes are dumb and you lost points for a stupid little mistake.
Changed the weekly established due date for our assignments on the last week of the course with no emails or reminders. One small reference to it in the syllabus that I suppose he expects us to remember weeks later? Missing last weeks work took me from an A in the course to a 67%. Tried to reach out but no empathy. Waste of time and money.
Same person who wrote about him changing the due date of assignments on the last week. Thought it was worth mentioning that the guy never responded to the email I sent him after seeing what had happened. Failing someone for one week of work is one thing, but ignoring them seems unbecoming of a professor. Its deserving of the extra bad score.
I really enjoyed his class. He is easily accessible and has clear expectations. However, it is very easy to fail his class because he has high expectations of his students. He is a tough grader and not everything he requests is based on the textbook, so you have to research. He has lots of experience in CJ and is very open to providing guidance.
I do not think Bert is a bad guy, but he is not a great teacher. He CONSTANTLY uses trick questions on quizzes. He is not easily accessible outside of class, and does not accommodate students with COVID. We watched many movies in class and I felt it was a waste of time.
Bert was really confusing when it came to guidelines and what he exactly wants for the final scrapbook, I got a high B but the only thing that was missing was I didn't print out another copy of something, when I told another student she said she didnt give him a second copy but she almost got 100%, he was just very inconsistent.
Get ready to write. If possible record class lectures and listen to them again after class.
waste of time
Literally the worst professor I've ever had. It's like he wants his students to fail. I had a 3.7 GPA before this class and tried to drop it because it was so difficult and he dropped me with an F. Would literally try any class other than his again
If you're not willing to put in any work in his class you're wasting your own time. He is straightforward and will answer your questions. I had a great time and highly recommend. Lots of note taking and there's a final presentation you must do, but he gives extra credit often. Would take his class again if I could
One of my favorite professors I have ever taken.
I honestly avoided taking this professor for a year because of his ratings on here and he wasn't even that bad. He was actually very nice and fair. Sure, he can be particular about certain things but its nothing crazy. Just follow instructions, pay attention to his announcements and communicate with him. I would text him and get immediate responses
This professor wasn't the worst professor that I had but, he is a tough grader. He will offer extra credit if you pay attention during the lectures. He has at least 2 group projects and 4 quizzes.
