Fast paced, but he breaks the lessons down with much clarity. Lots of homeworks given guarantees you a fair result (or an A) if you keep up with it. Daily, weekly quiz, would grade homeworks, the good thing about it is that you take on the habit to study regularly. He is always ready to help and to explain. Excellent and encouraging teacher!
he is a very nice math teacher.. homeworks are not hard.. don't have to waste too much time on HW.. lots of very easy daily quizzes, questions are all about the lessons i just learnt yesterday or 2 or 3 days before.. easy mid-terms as long as u study.. very HELPFUL teacher, understand the material very well, a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED instructor...
He's nice, cool, smart and helpful. If you want to get a high grade in his class, do your homework everyday, and Quizzes& Midterms will be easy for you. Take his class, you won't regret. I'm sure. ^_^
well prepared Good System:only downfall is if you get behind.
Thoughrough but ANAL.Quiz EVERY class, fast paced but throughly explained.Homework EVERY DAY.NO MAKE-UPS of anykind.NO EXTRA CREDIT. STINGY WITH GIVING POINTS. NO CREDIT FOR EFFORT,(but willing to help you in his office) TYPICAL ASAIN TEACHER (i am asain too)
Very easy, just make sure you sit in the front. He tends to go a bit fast sometimes, but he's a really good teacher. Easy A, he hands out syllabys that tell you all your homework in advance so you can technically do homework in class if your confident about the material. I high suggest him as a teacher.
He is a perfect techear! I really liked the way he explained. He is very nice and helpful... If you have time, go and talk to him in his office, you will find out what you need to get an A,,,, If you want to learn and earn what you should get for your study, Get him and you won't regret!! ^o^!!
he is such a nice teacher. he's very clear about everything and willing to help. he explains everything so that everyone understands. the quizzes are short and mostly based on the hwk, which are done in groups.
the guy creates so many hard quiz to keep us busy every class. he is crazy and boring. he doe take his class, he takes roll every day
very nice guy. explains everything. its only hard if you dont listen and dont come to class. quizzes are super short and based on hwk.
GOOD TEACHER, EXPLAIN CONCEPT CLEARLY.. QUIZ AND EXAMS ARE EASY (ONLY ...IF U DO UR HW! ). HE TESTS U MOST OF THE BASIC CONCEPT THAT HE ALREADY COVERED IN CLASS! HOWEVER, IT'S BETTER TO GET SOME PRACTICES !
HIGHLY reccomended! Very clear lectures! He's a fair grader too. Also gives participation points. Attendence is mandatory (he either collects the hw or gives a quiz to see if you are there) but honestly, if you want a decent grade in a math class, you have to show up anyway. kind of intimidating at first, but he's a very cool guy. =)
Very helpful. Don't miss class or you miss out on good notes. Ask QUESTIONS
He is very friendly, he answer all question you ask. Lectures are wonderful, very easy to understand. Tests and quizzes are very easy, too. But final easy is very long nad a little bit hard. Finally, I still got A+ in this class.
He is HOTTTT!!! very easy and unbelievably clear about everything. I really hated math be4. But after takin his class... CAL IS KOOL! For the first time in my life, i understand what cal is all about!!! Last but not least, he is extremely helpful when u need him. Com'on, TAKE HIM!!!
I'd recommend him. If you go everyday and do the homework you'll pass the class rather easily. I hate math so I knew I'd have to actually commit. As long as you stay on top of the homework and come to class you should do well. He explains things in a very simple easy way and gives lots of examples. If you're stuck he'll give help. Just be on time!!
good teacher but go 2 class everyday. homework everyday and lots of tests but overall pretty good class.
So nice! Really great teacher. There is homework everyday, but its due at the end of the week, just make sure to do it before the weekly quizzes, he takes the questions from there. Its not an easy subject, but he helps out a lot!

HARDEST EXAMS EVER WITH A STUPID COUNT DOWN... Not enough time to take the test and they are really hard...
come onn you guys. He is a great teacher. He helps students a lot. He was sick and he still helped me and my classmates before the test. Tests are hard if you don't do your homework and don't go to the class. I liked him a lot, he's a very nice person.
An excellent teacher, but his class is hard. His lectures are fun and engaging, however test and quizes require you to stay on top of your materials. If you really to learn and understand math, take his class. If you want an easy A, u better off somewhere else
This guy is pure gold in terms of a math professor. Lectures are informative and easy to understand. The exams are hard, but they are fair especially if you try hard. Best math teacher I've had since middle school, highly recommended.
BEST TEACHER EVER. I went in hating math, and now I love it. if you show up to class and pay attention you'll learn SO much. He actually knows how to teach + He's SO helpful. He makes it possible for EVERYONE, even begginers to learn math like a pro. But this isnt a class you can just throw away and not show up to, but trust me, its worth it
THIS IS A GREAT MATH TEACHER I EVER HAD AT DE ANZA. HIS LECTURE IS EXCEEDINGLY CLEAR AND INFORMATIVE. HOWEVER, HIS EXAM IS HARD AND TRICKY SO U HAVE TO WORK HARD, BUT THAT'S HOW U LEARN. HIGHLY RECOMMEND IF U WANT TO LEARN. NOT AN EASY A. GOOD JOB, PRO!!!
He is the best teacher I have ever had.super excellent and kind. He makes everything so clear that everyone could learn well.He gives us homework everyday, but never check. You can choose to do some of them depend on your situation. He give us bonus points in the tests. You can really learn a lot from his class. Stronly recommend!!!
Absolutely the best math teacher at De Anza. Class is decently hard, but Bert is an excellent teacher. Things I would recommend: Do at least 80% of the homework problems, show up to his test reviews, and complete the review worksheets in their entirety.
The lecture is really clear and knowledgeable~~Midterms are a little bit hard because of the time pressure~~Recommended~~
yeah, I think he's awesome, but it's one of those classes where you should start studying before you take the class so your not competely overwhelmed. he's interesting and a genuine person although very professional
Best professor ever. For an A student, you have to fully prepared and finish ur hw b4 attending his next class. Group and individule quizs prompts students with high interest and understanding of the materials. Midterms are similiar to the hw questions but more intellectural you have to do within 50mins, so be sure to have plenty practice.Good luck
Hard final and hard class. You have to spend a lot of time but get not a very good grade. A hard class.
the hardest math final i have ever took!!! quiz and exams are tough. no calculator during exam and quiz even thought the number are crazy complicated!!!!!! dont cheat in his calss....otherwise....FFFFFF
He is probably the only professor at DA who can truly TEACH. Extremely clear and helpful. Somewhat humorous (my personal opinion). His tests are on the hard side, so watch out. He is VERY STRICT about cheating, and trust him when he says he'll fail you for it >.< Like all teachers, he tends to favor hard-working students who participate/score well.
Clear lectures and gives some examples of easy problems that will make you think you understand however problems on the tests and final are way more complicated then the homework that many student cant solve them. His grading is very strict He will take off a lot of points for very small mistakes even if the don't effect the result not recomended
if u aim an A, don't take him, if u aim to improve yr maths, take him, if u want to be lazy, unless you're extremely clever, otherwise don't take him.
hard grading,
he is the best math teacher everrr, holds his office hours in the tutorial center and really tries to help his students, students from other math classes would sit in and listen to his lectures because they were so clear and helpful, his tests are require you to truly understand the material. really great teacher
probably the best math teacher ive taken in my life. Really inspired me to work hard. He extended office hrs near exams. Never late, lectures were extremely clear. Overall, one of the best teachers at deanza. i would recommend him for any math class and David Newton for physics.
great teacher, nice lecture, very very helpful teacher but....really hard grading and hardest exams, quiz....
an excellent teacher who provides a clear lecture. I like him because he takes his job seriouly and responsible to students Do your homework, then no porblem to pass his class.
very clear lectures, flexible office hours, quizzes/tests based on HW and on whether you can apply the theorems/methods you've learned, eloquent speaker, very fair grader (you grade your quizzes), one of THE BEST math teachers at de anza!
bert is a good classroom teacher, but his tests are amazingly hard. 3/4 of all his students dropped this quarter. He seems to only care about the A students in the room. If you're not already a math god, take someone else's class.
recomended teacher! really organized, all information he gave are clear. no need to submit homework. grade our quiz and midterms by ourself based on his answer which is posted online. fair grade. flexible office hours. overall he's really good teacher and i recommend to take this teacher!!!
If you are new to the subject matter or haven't taken this course in h.s., I recommend you go with an easier professor. It is plausible that a difficult professor will push you to study harder and if youre a masochist, by all means Otherwise, it is just as possible to push yourself with a teacher more lenient in the manner he grades.
Great lectures, but not an overall great/well-rounded instructor. Difficult + subjective grading, very discouraging towards class+performance. Unresponsive to inquiries about grading--it's unprofessional. Not recommended. I don't feel that he is geared towards HELPING you succeed. You should not be paying for an education like this.
The most informative math teacher at De Anza. Once you get out of his class, not only do you know the subject, but you UNDERSTAND it also. He is an extremely difficult teacher though, his tests are extremely difficult and his final is KILLER. Expect a lot of time to be devoted to his class. 1B was significantly easier after his class.
He taught every concept clearly and had to work around the failures of the Enable Math program. Still, he's a very good teacher who is fair in grading. Highly recommended if you want to learn math.
I had to drop his class because his teaching style was hard for me. He doesn't allow graphing calculators on quizzes or tests, which is ridiculous to me. But his lectures were very clear. His exams were extremely hard for me. STUDY STUDY STUDY. Good luck to all those who are going to take him. I hope you do better than me...
He is probably the best math professor at DeAnza. I learned so much in his class and he really did prepare me for Calculus. His exams are tough but fair. Do not get behind but this goes for any math class.
You should know now he will work you hard, you take about 3 quizes a week and 4 test total...no notes on either...but you will learn. He helps you as much as he can, his notes are very clear..and he is extremly nice. I swear...if you want to pass..take him...it will be tough i recommend not taking a lot of classes. he puts the answers online too
He's awesome. He's not easy but as long as you understand the materials, you will be able to do well on the tests.
not an easy A class, limited calculator usage and tons of homework may be hard for u, but these are training for u to improve your math skills.
Take HIM!!! He is not easy though. You will have to work. But her teaches very clear and is very easy to talk too and is very helpful. He is so so organized teacher as well, you know exactly what sections you will be quized on and what you will be tested on. there are 3 quizes a week but you will pass, you must show up though!! I love this class.
Getting an A in this class may not be possible for everyone, but he is still one of the greatest professors I've ever had. His lectures are clear, and his quizzes - if you study for them - prepare you for the exams. No one should be able to blame him for a bad grade, because he tells you what you need to do and know from the start. Take Bert Lo.
He is a very good lecturer, you will understand everything he says. His tests are hard, but if you study, you will do well. Bonus points for asking questions in class, a group quiz and individual quiz every week. 3 Midterms, 1 Final. Do not be scared by the negative reviews, he is one of the best at De Anza.
He is such a great teacher! He is so easy to talk to. Whenever I had questions (which was rare, since his lectures were so understandable)he took the time to help me one-on-one until I understood the concept. He really cars about his student, he's just requires you to try. Lots of quizzes though. Uses enablemath
pretty hard, by the last day of dropping within a w,half of the class is gone,horrible...
Mr. Lo is an extremely intelligent and straight forward teacher. 114, we had 3 days of lecture and 2 days enablemath.com lab assignments. 3 midterms and 1 final. he gave midterm reviews and specially alloted the day before midterm for the review. he is pretty helpful.
he expects us to finish his quiz and mid terms in a blink of an eye. mid terms and quiz are still do-able, final exam is impossible. hard+no time
I took math 1B with Lo and I ended up with an A+ in his class. He was very helpful whenever I visited during office hours and his lectures were very clear. If you take notes on the sample problems and do the homework, very very oftentimes those questions show up on the tests except the numbers are changed up. Dhow up, do HW, and take good notes!
He is super strict about attendance and being on time. He uses enablemath. He explains everything in lecture so easily. Make sure to study for quizzes and tests! He is actually pretty easy if you put effort in the class. I'm horrible at math but he makes it understandable. I totally recommend taking him!
If you do your homework and if you master the examples he bring up during lecture time, you will succeed. Your work is to practice writing and thinking fast. His tests are not hard if you master the homework. He is crystal clear too.
He is very clear and helpful! You'll miss him a lot even if you think he's pretty strict and hard sometimes. Don't think you can ace a class if you're not doing your HW and paying attention.
This teacher is overall quite good, but the quizzes/tests are unbelievably hard and somewhat unfair. He puts in material that he himself doesn't really cover during his lectures, and expects you to dedicate a lot of time into the class. If you want a B or higher, be prepared to focus on this class/subject a lot.
Lectures consist of going over examples for the most part but he really doesnt work on the types of questions you'll see on tests. His tests and quizzes are very hard and stressful maybe even to the point where it was absurd. if you want to PASS the class you need to do all the HW on time and attend the group tutoring sessions.
you really should do all the homework and find his previous test sample. very clear in the lecture. and fair grading. well I thought I may got an A but got A+....
Although Lo's lectures are crystal clear, his quizzes and tests are insanely difficult. The problems on his tests are far more challenging than regularly assigned homework. Be prepared to spend at minimum of 5 hours EVERY DAY FOR THE ENTIRETY of the qtr. if you want to do well in his class. Otherwise, you may want to take Math1B with someone else.
Easy class if you showed up and do the work. He is class is clear and would take math from him again
No prof. gives clearer lectures than Bert! Things are much clearer and easier to understand with his lectures. He's a fair grader and instructor. Quizzes and tests are quite demanding and hard. Be sure to study and do your homework so you will be more familiar with the problems. But really, I enjoyed his class a lot! Definitely recommend!
1 hour everyday, you will get an A
Hard but fair. I had a 10-day absence and he was very understanding and willing to help. Going to his office hour will definitely help your grade! Test problems were somewhat tricky. Crystal clear lecture but be sure to take notes and review!
i took the calculus ap test, got a 4 but got a B in his class. His lectures are verbatum from the textbook. His tests are super hard, i have no idea where he got his problems from. Everytime i took a test i would feel like i failed even though i got an A. He's a nice guy, but his tests are extremely difficult.
I took 1A and 1B with him, and when I take 1C with another teacher, I realize bert lo is pretty good. get an A is not that hard if you really study.
Cares a lot about his job and it's refreshing. He's tough but fair and I believe there's a decent curve based on the end results of the class. Gives EC for participation. The key is to stick it out to the end and read. There'll be things on the test not talked about in class, but based on HW. SO DO HW. Many exact HW questions on the tests as well.
Bert is an okay teacher. When it comes to lectures he can be very detailed. However, he's a tough grader. Math 114 is hard itself and Bert doesn't seem to make life easier for you, only harder. He also focuses on class room behavior a lot which is UNECCESSARY. This is college, not high school. Don't talk down to your students as if they were kids.
Great
I am taking 1D right now, but I miss his class (1A1B). I got As, but I spent 2 hours every day for the class.(i never spent more than 1 hour for science class).. Prepare to study dude!
he's very strict. he know what he's doing. attend class everyday because its useful. he tough because he wants you to succeed. I came out learning. not an easy class but if your willing to put in the work it'll pay off!
A great teacher and seems to care about students' progress in the class. However, I feel that two quizzes a week are excessive and don't really give students a chance to absorb material. Interesting subject, he knows his stuff. Definitely do all of the homework to get an A.
He is a very demanding teacher. Very clear cut and very helpful to make sure you understand but there is no fooling around. He is a true college professor w/ all his rules. Test are not that hard but very demanding with h.work. He uses enable which is online; can be a total pain if you don't understand. You have to stay really committed &focused!
Mr. Lo sets his standards at the beginning of the class. He reminds you that you can't fool around in his classes. But he's very helpful if you ask for help. He can be a bit picky on the math problems and how you do them, but only because he wants to prepare you for the next course that you have to take; Statistics.Overall awesome teacher.
Best Math teacher I had ever take.
Excellent teacher..one of the best at de anza.. very challenging class. The exams are fearful..not like any other Math course I've taken.
It's appalling that Bertrand Lo looks at this and actively censors reviews. This is why his ratings are abnormally high. He is a good lecturer. However, this is nullified by the fact that his grading is quite frankly, retarded. He'll take off full points for small errors and will ask you to write definitions or proofs verbatim. AVOIDHIMATALLCOSTS!!
compare to other pro,. he is harder,. however, I dund think it is impossible to get A.. I got two A from him. (BTW, the comment below me is not true, he doesn't teach 1C)
If his quizzes and midterms can be easier, I will say he is a perfect teacher. Recommend to take his class if you are not afraid of the midterms and quizzes.
A very difficult teacher.
if you wanna take math class, don't take his class at all! He will make your life much harder than ever.
He is a great teacher...one of my best teachers so far. You will learn alot in his class.
He is ok. The quizzes are doable, and midterms too, but you need to be able to solve the problems VERY quickly.
He is clear with his expectations and follows through with his rules. I have a problem with "required group" work in math. While one of the best teachers I have ever had in math, I dropped his class because his tests were too long and difficult for me to do. I did the homework and understood the concepts though.
BY FAR HARDEST AND MOST UNFAIR TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD. unreasonable expectations. horrible. im smart and he made me feel stupid when i went to get help from him. never take him
It is not necessary to give that critical questions on the test, especially for Math43, which has many multiple topics. I was very tired to have his class although he can teach very well. I understood the concepts and I am able to use them in calculus, but I didn't do well on his tests since it was so difficult.
Unbelievably picky about answers. 1/8,1/4,1/2 points marked off for nearly every question. I often had to ask what was incorrect/missing. Several times that part of a point was given back - he had mistakenly(?) sloughed it off. I'm not stupid. Not at all. He made me feel it when I stood next to him. Class consisted just of him going over examples.
He is a nice guy and lectures very well. He expects A LOT of work done each day. He assigns a load of problems, but never collects hw. Quizzes are mostly partner, but they're still very hard quizzes. If you don't have time to devote (if you're taking another science or math class), don't take him. You can't BS your way through this class.
Take him if you're willing to dive into the course for at least 2-3 hours a day, more if there's a midterm or final coming up. Do the homework each day. If you have other priorities (ie. job, other classes) reconsider taking him. You must devote yourself to this course because there's daily work if you plan to pass with a plausible grade.
He's a great teacher, you can tell he has a lot of knowledge on the subject. Funny and easy person to get help from. He does expect a lot from his students! Don't take unless you're willing to really dedicate hours upon hours to his class
Take good notes and pay attention at what he teaches (or spend hours to read the book), and do the list homework. He is a fairly grader, your quizzes's grades may be changed only if you come to his office hours to defense your work. Great teaching!
Great teacher. Very neat handwriting and clear notes. Very helpful midterm review sessions. Make sure you have the time to commit to this class because the homework may seem easy, but the quizzes and midterms really test you to see if you know what you're doing. Take every opportunity for extra help on math like office hours, review sessions, etc.
Make sure you attend all his classes, do all the homework, and take notes. Everything you talk about in class is exactly what you'll find on your quizzes and tests. the midterm study guides are really helpful too. if you do everything he asks you to, you should get an A easy. He also provides lots of office hours and tutors.
great teacher clear, helpful, and interesting...but not for everybody by the end of the quarter about 10 students remained (started at about 30-40) definitely go to all the office hours and tutor .don't take if you have other commitments(job or other mahor classes)
Best teacher ever. He is very easy if you follow the instructions. Most people that complain about him don't do their homework. If you do all the assigned homework and show up in class and take notes, you will get A.
Ugh, I hated his class. He expects so much. If you have a light load in terms of courses, it's fine, but I didn't. His work takes up a lot of time.
I think he is tough, Not that's hard. But the point is he's losing all the good students who do hw, but do bad on tests. He teaches u a lesson that NO MISTAKE IS ALLOWED IN THE CLASS, means u have to be perfect in order to get an A. By the way, he doesn't teach 2A so the comment below is.....
I can say Bert Lo is a very good teacher. He teaches well, his lecture notes are very clear. He gives study guide for midterms. I got all A in his midterm, HOWEVER, his Final Exam was just extremely hard. 4 points for each MC, WTH... I got a C at last. Luckily it is a Pass / No Pass course for me. Or I will screw up my GPA4.0. Not recommend.
He makes the material extremely hard compared to other math teachers, so you are forced to understand the content better. But most people aren't math majors and will never use MOST of the material in their careers so all it does is burden the students when they have work / other difficult classes. Only take if you can kill time/gpa.
If you do study, you can get good grade in his class
The guy is unreasonable. He grades through every single step of a problem. If I got a correct answer, though achieved it differently than he did, he would take off points. I had 1/8 and 1/4 points subtracted all through my HW and quizzes. He communicates alright through lecture but I wouldn't say he's a great teacher.
it's a very good and helpful teacher
Bert is a wonderful instructor, however, his testing material is very, very difficult. Although the homework assigned is not mandatory, I would recommend to do every single problem he assigns because they are found on the tests. And KNOW the material. He switches up some problems to test if you REALLY understand the content. Good luck.
I think the only important thing to consider prior to taking his class is that you need to really understand the concept inside out, and I mean thoroughly. Of course he doesn't just throw you into the wild and expect you to come out on top, but to survive this torture you have to dedicate at least 2 he's / day. And get all the practice you can.
Take Him. Easy A! Bert Lo is the Best. You will enjoy his class and learnt a lot. People said he is hard but he is now much easier than before.
One of the best professors I've ever took at De Anza! His lectures are clear, just take notes and study them. Questions in exams are mainly based on the notes. Things are easy... I finally got an A in this class. Don't hesitate to take him, his classes are always full!!
i love Bert! If you have a chance, just register his class. He provides free tutorial classes for students, which help you a lot. There're lots of group quizes as well. Midterms, Exams are easy comparing to other professors at De Anza... I got an A at the end :)
Take his class and you will get an A. Trust yourself, go to his class and you will know how easy it is.
Very helpful and easy Math. teacher! I improved a lot in this class. Just take his class and you'll be fine :D
I enjoyed taking his class. To be honest, I learned a lot of useful problem-solving skills. The midterms, quizzes are easy as well. Just take notes, study them well and you will get an A easily.
Lectures are clear and tidy. Materials are easy and understandable. I am not good at math. but I ended up with an A-. Thank you Bert!
TAKE his class! He explains the material so well. Midterms, quizes, and exams are based on lecture notes. Don't skip his class or you're in trouble on catching the progress. Easy A! One of the best professors at De Anza.
easy A and super helpful to students:) he talks with everyone individually for the first midterm and gives useful advice on improving yr math skills. recommend!!
MUST take if you want to get an A!!
crystal clear explaination with easy exams. just follow his steps and you will surely be fine.
easiest professor at De Anza. you gonna enjoy his class and learn a lot!
best teacher ever. pay attention to his class and you will surely be fine! no HW will be collected but make sure you do them. easy A!
lovely professor! a must-take at de anza. im not doing well, but i still get a A at the end. and i reli learned a lot.
get an A in this class is a piece of cake, since he gives out so many As. best mathematics teacher for student who is bad at math. like me. recommended!
easiest math. class ever! take this class and get an A. he offers so many tutoring sections for students. and lots of ECs!!
The best of the class is he makes his lesson with fun. Learning math. is pretty enjoyable. Stuffs are easy, with lots of extra credits. End up with an A!! :)
super easy! I took him from Math 43 to Math 1A, and got all A!! recommend for everyone.
I would say he is a must-take at De Anza... so damn easy!! got an A without paying attension.
just take him and get an A. very easy!!
even though he grade you so hard,he is helpful professor. hw is not mandatory, but ud better finish on time and ask him asap. cause you will suffer not only on the quiz but also the exam. 3 mid terms.
Great teacher. Easy grading on quiz, midterm and final. I can still remember the faces on those people on the wait-list who didn't get in, I felt so bad for them.
bert lo is the best! he makes classes easy. as long as you pay some efforts, you will surely be fine!
enjoyed his classes and learned a lot. no need to submit HW. he gave out review with exact same questions before midterms. few group quizes and extra credits. final is pretty straight forward. got an A without paying much effort. just take him if you can!
I just enjoyed his class. Pay attention, copy notes, revise for a bit and get an A easily. I miss bert's easiness after transferring to ucberkeley:(
Great teacher! If you do the work, you will learn the material really well. I feel totally prepared for 1B even though it is a much harder class IMO. He can seem a bit intimidating at first, but he is really nice and will help you with everything. Work hard and you will get a lot out of this class
I do not understand how other people thought this professor was easy. He was a good teacher during lecture, but his tests and quizzes had so many questions you could barely finish. The tests and quizzes also had tons of questions we had never gone over. NOT RECOMMENDED
Bert Lo's math 43 class is NOT easy. He was intimidating at first, but is helpful during office hours. He talks fast during lecture. The tests have a lot of questions and are very hard. 8 quizzes 3 midterms 1 final. That's your grade.
He is Easy. I dont know why some ppl said he is hard. Perhaps they do not pay effort in this class. I took it last quarter and most of my friends got an A and one got A+. This class is easy but it doesnt mean you can be lazy and blame the teacher at the end.
Bert Lo is a good teacher. Midterms and quizes are easy with a final which is a little bit harder, but as long as you hv done yr study and HW well, i'm sure you will be fine. Ended up with an A- :)
You will have to work your butt off in order to receive the grade you want. During lecture, you will feel like you understand, but when tests and quizzes come, you'll receive a grade you're not happy with. He's not easy. This class should be easier than what's taught. He won't curve and won't care if most of the class fails-his green sheet says so.
Bert Lo is hard but fair. Yes, more than a handful of people fail the course, but if you are a math-type, you will do just fine. He works his butt off to teach, and he excels very well at it. He puts the math into a practical sense so you are not like "What's the whole point of learning this?" For the serious.. Believe in the Bert Lo System. A+
it is surely one of the best math. classes at De Anza. you will get something more in this class at the end of quarter. as an international student, he is quite easy. I ended up with an A!
Great professor. Teaches really well. I don't understand the reviews on here saying his class was 'easy.' I consider myself above average in math and found this class very difficult. I was concerned I would not pass after the final. If his tests weren't so hard I would take his classes more often. If you want to learn math, take him.
Bert will rarely respond to emails. Lectures make it seems as if you know everything, but beware quiz and midterms will kill you. He is good at teaching the basics but is ruthless with grading.
checked my grade today and got an A! what a valuable one with my effort in this class while other people are being lazy. seriously... he is EASY.
I took him fall quarter for Math 43, and i got an A+. This class is tough for some students but if you just apply yourself, you too can succeed like i did. Don't be daunted by the workload. I only did half the hw, but i focused myself on every lecture and every problem that came before me. The more you work, ask questions, the better you become
best professor ever! register his class as soon as possible since it gets full quickly. recommended!
YOU WILL REGRET EVER SIGNING UP FOR THIS PROFESSOR. He expects way too much out of his students; his class is for people that love calculus. You have been warned.
He is simply the best math teacher at Deanza. No question about it. I have never seen a teacher care more about his students' success. He holds office hours every day and is always willing to help students that need it. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely a hard class, but by the end of the class, you will understand all the concepts extremely well
He is an easy teacher with crystal clear lecture. You will understand concepts very well in his class. Check in his office hour everyday, which is reli helpful! Take him as soon as you can since his classes are always filled up quickly! Recommended. Got As for his Math1A & 1B quarters ago.
Bert is a great professor with excellent clarity giving you step by step lectures. However, although he is definitely a good professor, his tests and homework assignments are challenging. I find myself understand his lectures but being completely lost during homework and tests. Not a good class but a good professor.
His teachings are okay, and the class isn't as easy as most of the reviews on here says. There are 2 quizzes every week, 3 midterms, and a cumulative final. The hw are on enable (online). His lectures aren't really helpful because he goes over the problems really fast. Bottom line is if you want to challenge yourself, then this class is for you.
His lectures are great, but not having homework credit actually ended up hurting me a lot in the end. If you don't study well for the midterms a lot can go wrong, unfortunately. Scratch paper doesn't count as work on tests, and I ran out of time on almost all of them. Only take him if you're confident you can do well. He has pretty strict rules.
His course is clear and good. I can see he has a great passion in teaching maths.! Difficulty for quiz, midterms, and finals are between easy and normal. So as long as you study, you can manage to get an A at the end. Recommend to all of you!
King of Math43... must take! Very easy with good lecture. What's more I can request, he is perfect! Got an A at the end, just like everyone else in his classes.
I'm not quite interested in Maths. But I love his class! Fun class, 3 midterm + 1 Final. There you go. Easy A!
Easiest professor ever. I have no sense why some ppl said he is hard... or had they ever paid any effort in his class? highly Recommended anyway!
easy A. just take good notes and you will be fine:)
He is hot! I just love his class. Got an A at the end easily.
Bert is timely sensitive so remember to arrive on time :D. He cares about students but like he said "only if you seek for help". He goes to Math tutorial center everyday to help students,he also spends 2 hrs for you before midterms if you ask for it. his review package can save your life.More importantly, he teaches you to care about your success.
This is my third class with him. Again... He is very EASY! Got my third A, and planning to get another one next quarter. Recommend to all major, he's the BEST!
Easiest Class ever. Just show up and you will almost pass this class. Lots of extra credits. Make sure you sign up for his classes earlier, since they got full pretty quick. Got an A without spending any effort. Recommended!
Don't take Bert .His lecture is complicated and not helpful. Not recommend. Not at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He is easy. To be honest, I didn't read the book and get an A at the end. Don't buy the book. His lecture notes are clear enough to overcome his chill tests.
Show up and you will get an A. Bert "Low" is easy since his requirements on your work are "Low". I thought I will get a B-, but end up getting an A with the rest of class. If you wanna get an A, he's your man!
His lectures and expectations are very clear and he explains things well, but he's a hard grader. He gives 3 midterms and they are really hard! The quizzes are not too hard. The finals are insanely tough so don't count on them to raise your grade. I wouldn't recommend taking him since he's so hard.
Here's the thing. Bert doesn't care if you can do the product rule. He doesn't care if you know how to do derivatives. He wants you to UNDERSTAND. He ask for proofs so you understand HOW you got the answer. Many students know how to do linear approximation, not many will know why it works. Take this class if you want to understand not just pass.
Not recommend to take Bert at all. lectures are boring and he seems arrogant to his students
I thought he was just great, but a lot of people in my class dropped eventually. Just make sure you study your notes and remember your algebra skills. Bert likes to make sure you get the concept rather than you know how to use the concept, so there is a lot of proofs and explaining in his class. Not easy, but i'd recommend it. Good prep for 1b
he is probably the best professor teaching Math 43 at De Anza. easy grading with organized materials. so far i got all As in his midterms without much studying. recommended!
Hardest math teacher ever... Tough grader, no homework creadit, all your grade come form quiz and test, very very hard to pass, think clear befor you take it.
so hard!!!! Don't belive those people said that he is easy!
Mr. Lo is very strict about having a clear logic behind what steps you take in solving a problem. Just because you get the right answer doesnt mean your logic behind it is right. Having a clear logic is imperative in calc and Mr. Lo helps you build that. Don't be put down if you lose points, learn from ur mistakes, do ur hw, participate u shud b ok
He's a very good teacher, his lectures are great. Tests on the other hand, the hardest tests on earth! It's frustrating to be in his class, you feel confident after doing the hw & working so hard and then the test shows up and it's brain wrenching. If math isn't your strongest subject I don't recommend you take him. Extremely hard grader too.
Do not take Bert. Super hard and his lectures are useless. Wasted my time and money
He is a good teacher but when it comes to tests he just screws you over. He over promotes the tutoring center and blames you for doing bad in his class. Which most of the class is doing terrible. Take if you want to learn and not pass. But transfer is about grades. Do not take. You're better off skipping. Overall you get low scores with bert lo.
Mr. Lo is an outstanding professor in terms of lecture. He makes everything extremely clear. The tests are very difficult to cope, but not in terms of content. The way the points are distributed are absolutely brutal because nothing is weighted. The content of the tests are fair and are very doable if you do your HWreview sheets continuously
Bert Lo is the most difficult math teacher I have ever had, but he is also the BEST. If you want to really understand the information and not just memorize, take his class. It won't be an easy A, you will work hard and earn your A. He makes help available. His exams are hard, but he gives you TONS of practice. Great teacher. Glad I took his course.
Great teacher by any means. But u need to work hard. His is picky about cheating. Don't use your own scratch paper. Don't write anything when he is collecting the tests.
extremely hard
One of the best math professors at De Anza. His way of teaching the material is really clear as long as you do the corresponding HW to the lecture . If you don't understand, he's ready to help you. Gives a quiz about every week. Quizzes are easy bc they are mostly HW problems. 4 midtermsfinals during the quarter & they are relatively hard.
Although the class was very challenging, i got an a at the end and don't know why. I guess I just tried hard to get an A after getting really bad scores on quizzes and seeing all the classmates dropping class. After we had a sub once, I thought prof bert was way better at lecturing. Use the math center and get tutored, I think that helped me a lot.
He's an awesome teacher. He's there to help, he's willing to work on the problems with you if you're stuck. He has solution for every quizzes and exams along with grading criteria. You can learn from your mistake. If you make algebra mistake but know what you're doing, you only lose point at that step. Tests are quite long but not hard. Recommended
The hardest class I've ever had. I couldn't even get a C. Tests are extremely long and have lots of curve balls. The hw and study guides are just basic practice problems that hardly helps. Quizzes are just as hard and for a 50 min class, you only get 30 min because he tries to squeeze in lecture. Unreasonable. Even the smarter kids failed.
tough grader . Do not take Bert
Although his lectures are very clear, you have to do the HW if you want to pass this class. His style of teaching is very clear and he's there for you if you don't understand. Gives a quiz about every week but they're usually problems taken straight off the homework. Exams and finals has a few curve balls and harder than the quizzes so be prepared
The WORST teacher and the most RUDE one at de An za. Please avoid him. He is a ridiculous guy, always seems get irritated, extremely arrogant. He assigns LONG quizzes and arrived classroom 20minutes late but collected it on time. Need to grade quizzes by yourself and visit his office to argue with him to get partial credits. Sucks
The quizzes , the tests , the final are super super super hard. You have to spend at least 10hoursweek on doing homework, otherwise you cannot pass the class with a B-. If you are doing just OK with Maths, you can just get a B in this class, not a easy A. You have to suffer a lot in this class.
Tests are super super hard. I studied more than 10 hours, did all the homework and still loses a lot of points on the test. DON'T TAKE.
HARDEST. PROF. EVER. I am not being dramatic, this was the first class I ever failed. Everything bad that can happen about a class, happened. Most of the students in his class failed, and they were not lazy. I can't even express how much I despise him.
his class is the hardest class ever, he is so boring, he is disorganzed. more than 60%of the class failed. HORRIBLE
He is a good professor who is a fair grader. He gives you a chance to earn back points lost on quizzes. Midterms + Final are all hard +sort of long but they are reasonable. Make sure to take advantage of office hours and create your own study groups, AND also do all the homework (+more if needed).
he is horrible. his tetsts are super hard and hard and hard. Avoid him at all cost.
He's good. However, tests and quizzes are hard. He's never responded to your email, never. From the beginning, I was an A student. I did homework like everyday. Then final, bang, a B-. Please don't take him if you want a good grade.
his lectures are very interesting, try not to skip any class. the grades the exams very fair and he gives so many partial credit. try to do the questions in the way he explain in the lecture and also do the home works as well.
one of my favorite math teachers at de anza. he is so organize and ready for each lecture. he is very clear when he is lecturing, also go to every class and do the exams in the way that tough in the lecture.
Tests are tough, and the greensheet alone is pretty scary. Doesn't collect homework, but good luck passing if you don't do it. That said, I learned a lot during his lectures, and he answers questions if you ask them. Basically, unless you have good study habits, and know what you are doing in math, you might want to look elsewhere.
He explains everything clearly and is a fair grader. Don't need to hand in homework but you must do it to prepare for quizzes and midterms. As long as you do the homework and review packages, tests won't be too hard. Don't hesitate asking questions, he is always there to help you. If you are willing to study, you will get good grades.
teaches good but test are hard half of the class drop tricky questions on test you must really smart to pass his class
Bert will answer all your questions and help give you a clearer understanding. He's pretty generous in giving a bonus quiz and some bonus points for participation in class to boost your grade. He grades pretty fairly but is strict on deadlines. passing the class depends on how much time you invest in it.
Gives you a chance to defend your answers on quizzes, and usually you will get some points back. Tests are very tough, but if you understood your mistakes on quizzes you should be able to complete them. Final was very hard though (no one finished). Homework is not mandatory but is crucial. You will learn independence from his class as well.
He's hard. Read the greensheet at the beginning of the quarter and be prepared to spend at least 14 hours a week just like he said in the greensheet. Material wise I think Math 22 is hard and well you really need to put effort in this class if you want a good grade.
worst teacher ever. not recommended
Bert Lo is the best teacher you will ever have. This guy is honestly the god of math and knows it from head to toe. If you don't really care about grades and you would rather like to actually learn math, take The Bert.
He's a hard professor because he genuinely makes you work for your grade. After a quiz or test, he is really good at giving points back because even if the answer is wrong, as long as you showed your logic, he gives points. HW is optional but trust me, DO THE HW! The midterms were brutally hard. Quizzes were pretty easy but only if you study.
I did well on the quizzes and the first exam, but my grade went downhill after that. Exams are way tougher than the quizzes and if you do not remember every small details on how to solve a problem, you are in trouble. A lot of prerequisite details are needed for exams. Do not skimp on constantly reviewing prerequisites if you want to pass.
He is one of the toughest math professor I've ever taken. His lecture clearly shows and explains most of materials and straightforward, learnt many things. BUT! Quizzes and Exams are SUPER HARD since he has high expectations from students. I would recommend his class only if you enjoy a challenging class, the grading criteria must be super tough.
The best math professor at De Anza. I really enjoy his lecture. You can learn a lot from him. Don't miss him!
Best math teacher I've had at DeAnza! SUPER friendly, but strict on class policies. Lectures will really help, he demonstrates lots of tips/tricks not in the textbook. There's not a lot of assigned work, but they take some time. Test questions are almost exactly like hw and review packets. textbook only for extra reading & supplemental exercises.
I would honestly not recommend this teacher to anyone. Although he is friendly and demonstrates tips that are not in the textbook, he is a hard teacher. His quizzes and midterms are tough and the homework does not really prepare you for his quizzes and midterms. Do NOT take Bert Lo if you want a good GPA! Quizzes and midterms almost every week.
Would not take this professor again. Don't take this class if you are concerned about your GPA. This class was difficult and his grading did not make sense. Make sure you study his lectures, but also beyond that because most of his exams are a lot more difficult than what he shows in class. Lectures are okay, I understood the class but not him.
Surprisingly, his math 43 class is pretty chill. I won't say it's hard, it's a average class. You just have to pay a little effort on it. I studied 90 mins before the test and everything seems fine. Don't let the comments shocked you. After the W deadline, he gave out a ridiculous easy test! I'm glad I didn't drop it.
He is one of the best math prof at De Anza college. His lecture is super clear and easy to understand if you pay attention. Do not flake in class because it will come back and bite you. In any math class, you MUST do homework if you don't want to fail. His test is tough but if you pay attention. You should be fine. Take him if you love math.
He's a great professor. Honestly speaking I think he makes his quizzes and exams fair as in if you do all of the assigned homework before them you'll succeed. Don't skip class and follow what he says as in if he says to complete section _ homework before next lecture then complete it asap. Read your notes after class too it'll greatly benefit you.
unless you are a native speaker, never take his class because he never care whether you understand his lecture in English. You also must consider you have sufficient skills to understand in a math. If you don't, not only loosing a grade, but also failing in his class. He often asks guys who struggles with a grade, but his ASW is always its ur fault
I've never been good at math, but for every other math class I've been able to get by with A's and B's. By all means I don't think Bert is a bad professor, I just don't think he's a great one to take if you have a poor foundations. It is really fast paced and you'll find yourself behind. Hw is optional, but really isn't so get a tutor if math is eh
Bert is a great instructor. His lectures are always clear and easy to follow - even when the mathematical concepts aren't. He is a tough grader, but the grading criteria is clearly outlined, so you know how to get the grade you want.
Bert Lo is an excellent Professor, however he is incredibly tough. As a slow learner, I loved his lectures, but I never had enough time to complete his quizzes/exams (timed). You have to spend a lot of time on the class, but its doable. (As long as your schedule isnt packed with other heavy classes). I would recommend him if youre a fast leaner.
His grading is tough and lectures fast-paced. Wouldn't recommend unless you can spend hours each night studying specifically for his class. Quizzes and tests are more challenging than the homework, you must understand the concepts inside and out to pass.
1st time taking Bert lo, 2nd time taking 1A. I never knew how easy, lenient my previous professor was, until I took Bert lo, but really never understood 1A as well as I do now. He's makes math very easy to understand, but definitely makes you work for it. He prepares you so much for 1B! If you want to actually be good at math, then he is the man.
TBH, it's quite difficult to take more than A+ at his class. Although he gives us some extra credits, it's still hard to take great grade. If you have confidence of math, you definitely should take his class, and then you'll get more confident with your mathematic skills. (It's partly because it's unavoidable to study hard to get A or A+)
There are some math professors that you don't take and this is one of them. Very very hard. The hw does not prepare you for his test. Test are very different from hw and lecture examples. AVOID AT ALL COST!!!
He's Hard. He knows his stuff really well, but tests are Calc level while homework and class lecture are pre req math skills. He takes points off on quizzes even if it is the right answer because it was not done his way. Dropped it right after the first test. Class average is a C. IF you want an easy A go look somewhere else.
He makes everything harder than it has to be. He will make a regular simple problem into the most complex problem. Its not fun when he makes math unaccessible to others. Take someone else!
The problem with this prof is he makes everything more challenging. If its the only class your taking then it fine. But, if you have other classes, you wont have enough time to study for his class. The material is not hard he just makes it more confusing. Other profs are better at laying out the material.
I took this professor for a calc class. The class average was below 50 percent. The reason is because his exams are really hard. Some of the things on the exam are not fair questions, and the exams are really long. I could never finish the exams in time, and I did the HW. By the time the finals came, their was only 9 people left out of the 40.
The class requires a lot of hard work and the time to actually do all your homework and go over notes. If youre good at math then youre more well off, if you struggle, this class may be too intense for you. The prifessor knows his craft and is very nice and approachable with clear lectures but too many quizzes and midterms. It can be overwhelming!
As part of the last survivors of the class, I am someone who spends more than 10 hours outside of class and virtually lives in the tutoring center, I can tell you that this class is very difficult. The materials presented on the quiz and tests are 10x as hard than what is practiced in the homework. Not recommended at all
Not recommended! I sent lots of time studying but found myself not even getting a C on exams. I usually do good in math with A's and B's but this guy is really hard. The HW does not help and if you are taking other classes you will not make it.
Not a great professor one of the worst and most confusing I ever had. He does not care if every one fails the class. He also will not curve the class. His class average is around 50%. So, I would avoid at all cost. There are better professors.
I took him for math 1B. That class is already hard and he made it even worse. Very few students ended up taking the final more than half the students drop the class. Some of my friends took his class and had the same experience. NOT RECOMMENDED!!
Not very good at explaining math. He makes everything more challenging. There are other professors that explain math better. If you plan on taking him plan on failing the course.
Bert Lo believes cheating is a form of personality disorder, and that if not for his CONSTANT VIGILANCE students would take advantage of his trust. Unfortunately this results in the entire class feeling as though they are suspects and erodes any potential for an atmosphere conductive to learning. lacks basic empathy, will not treat you with respect
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! I have never failed a class in my whole entire life until now. In math 42 I got a high A but this class is something else, I studied A LOT, read the book, spent my time in the tutoring center and I even had to skip my other classes to study for this class. Nothing on his lectures are on the quizzes or tests.
I got to know bert really well this semester. We had many long talks in his office about life and math. Unfortunately , he confided in me that he has been writing many of these positive reviews himself. He talks about how noe one seems to understand and how hes a failure as a teacher. hes a great guy but I would move on.
Not that good he really hard and ask unfair questions.
Please for the love of God do not take this professor by any means. I dont care if its the only class you need left to transfer and all the other teachers are full. Wait another quarter and hope you can find a spot in a different class. Never have I had been through so much stress and mental anguish in a college class in my life.
Quizzes are homework, midterms are midterms, and finals are the oblivion. Bertrand Lo, Math Lord of the S Quad bends all parts of calculus to keep the grass green and birds chirping. I also forgot to mention kids dropping out and and people failing. BUT- I'd recommend Mr. Lo to Math majors and STEM majors to get a feel for a University Math class.
You must memorize all formulas yourself He is awful and will not give second chances His exams are very difficult Just know if you take his class your GPA WILL GO DOWN. Getting an A is very hard You have to be natural a good memorizer , very gifted at math , and a very hard-worker to survive him Trust me dodge this bullet DON'T TAKE HIM
I get As and Bs in ALL math classes, I have never worked so hard in my life to JUST barely pass a math class. I did all of the homework and made study guides until my palm was swollen, but even that wasn't enough to graze a B grade. Put this class as a P/NP or it will ruin your GPA. I'm convinced no matter how hard you work, it will never be enough
He gives good lectures but the midterms and the quizes are hard you should prepare for the exams. Take more time to focus on math compared to other classes.
Worst prof I've ever taken. This class wrecked my GPA. A lot of hw and they are not graded. Only quizzes and exams will be counted toward the final grade. Exams are super difficult, so much harder than quizzes, hw and revision sheets.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLASS! not because its one of the hardest class I have taken. But personality of the professor is the worst. He not helpful and too arrogant. He does't trust any of the students and will make everyone feel uncomfortable. He thinks every student is trying to cheat. You are better of taking a professor who cares about students.
Lectures are clear and you will learn a lot from them, but after doing all the homework, reading, and showing up to every lecture, don't even expect to pass. He puts things not addressed in class or on the homework on the quizzes and tests. At the end of this class you will have the knowledge to pass any other math 1B class but not this one.
His lecture is amazing. I like his way of teaching since Math 43 and decided to take math 1B with him again, but opposite with the lectures, tests and quizzes are nightmares. I managed to pass 43 with a B (although I thought I would get a C, he curved it maybe), but might not in Math1B. However, with Math 1B, don't expect to get an A in his class.
He is great and communicates both the material and his expectations from students very clearly. People probably get bad grades because the material from his class is inherently difficult and he grades people fairly, not because he doesn't teach well.
You wont pass his class if you did not study for all the quiz or test because he has 8 quiz and 3mid-terms. You have to keep study hard just to get a pass for the class.
You take this class, it is almost impossible to pass. There are only 3 Midterms and 8 Quizzes and a final (final is the hardest) if you did bad on1 midterm consider to drop the class because that will bring u to D most of the students in my class failed it and they even opened a new class next quarter because of the amount of the people who failed.
hard Midterms and quizzes and especially final. if you get one bad grade you will fail the class.
He's not a good teacher at all and his exams are horrendously long and tough. He is proud about how tough his exams are and seems to take pride at the high failure rate. Out of a class of 40 probably 4 passed the course. His teaching ethics should be audited by his superiors because he surely doesn't know how to write a viable exam. Avoid him guys!
takes points off for "scratch work" on quizzes and tests, while also being adamant that you show your work. Lectures are unclear and he makes things incredibly difficult for students. Don't take Bert Lo if you want to pass or if you want a good grade.
By far the worst professor I have ever had. With all classes being moved online with the pandemic, he does not seem to put in much effort at all to make the tests clear. He expects way too much for the current situation. If classes are still online when you are taking this class do not take this professor!
Intimidating from the start. He sets up his whole class for failure and believes that most students are active cheaters. He has a huge ego for how hard his exams are and expects you to remember everything he teaches by heart. Even if you are literally Einstein you won't pass any class he teaches. Avoid at all costs and look for another professor.
He is a nice professor, replies to every email carefully and detailed which I ask questions in. After taking his class I realized it is crucial to do self-evaluation, I used to do homework without checking answers. But now I did. His lecture is also detailed and helpful. I agree that his class is hard because of his strict requirement of quizzes
Worst class I have ever taken. I consider myself to be pretty decent in math, but this class is a nightmare. Hardest grader I've ever seen, and the midterms and quizzes are straight up impossible. Especially during these COVID times, his planning is abborhent. Even if he is the only professor available, do not take him. You have been warned.
Terrible. Would give a 0 if I could. He has no regard for his students, all he cares about is himself. He always assumes everyone is automatically cheating. Do not take him.
One of the worst professors at De Anza, even if you need to take his class, I would suggest just skipping it.
With fall registration coming up, you should know that bert is not the professor to take. He made me despise math so much. I am currently in calculus, and I can say with confidence that his class did not need to be as hard as it was. Most times, his quizzes and exams covered Calc 1C or D content while it is a pre req class. Please do not take him.
He literally thinks everyone is cheating. You can't find out what your grade is if he thinks you're cheating, and doesn't respond to emails.
STAY AWAY!
Bert Lo's lectures are clear and concise and you learn a lot from his class. However, his class is difficult and you will not be able to pass his class let alone get a good grade unless you really understand the concepts plus have extraordinary intuition and skillset in Math. Don't take unless you're fully confident in your Mathematical ability.
Bert Lo makes math seem as if you are the one who sucks at math. This class was designed for students to lose confidence in their mathematic abilities. I took this class in the fall of 2019 and got a D on the first exam. I took Math43 again with another professor in the fall and got an A. Don't take this class unless you want an F.
Bad professor ever
he is good, really helpful if you listen to the lecture carefully.
Bert is one of the best math professors I've taken thus far at De Anza. He's very accessible and has plenty of insight to make a difficult class like 2A way more manageable and palatable. You still have to work for your grade and there are only a couple things he grades, but he's forgiving as long as you come defend your work in office hrs
Had many math professors at De Anza, Bert is the most challenging. But you learn a lot simply because it's so hard to get good grades in his class without doing the work. Answers questions in and out of class. Would not recommend for an easy A (or even a B), but definitely worth it.
He ALWAYS thinks that student are cheating. He always want you to come to his office hours, if you don't do it more likely you wont be able to get your scores. His rules for final exam during online are awful, he may suspend you from the exam if he don't like something like camera position for ex. He's being very rude. Not recommend him for take.
This teacher is awful. He is extremely test heavy and accuses you of making mistakes on tests and quizzes when you clearly do it correctly. It either has to be done exactly in his way or you don't get points. I was so close to a C in order to pass and this teacher decides to mark questions I got CORRECT WRONG because he wants you to retake. Awful.
He is a great lecturer and a tough grader. If you are considering math as your major, you want to learn the concepts deeply, and it is not a big deal for you to not get an A (he is not an easy A), I strongly recommend him. He cares for his students and you can see it by the time that he put in the class. Challenge yourself. It worths it.
Bert Lo is the most unhelpful and rude teacher. You need to grade your own tests and quizzes by yourself. Very hard to pass his class. lectures are awful. if you take Bert, Good luck
Bert is the hardest teacher I have come across his test are really different from the actual work we do in class and the examples from the textbooks. Doesn't respect his students, basically the first week he told us he knows we're going to cheat even though you can consider this a high-level math course. Just wait until Jimenez becomes available.
I'm only giving him a 2 because he is a good lecturer and answers students questions well. Do not take his class even if he is the only professor available. Assumes everybody is cheating online, and grades really hard. Does not grade homework and gives no extra credit opportunities. Failed 80% of the class and makes people want to quit.
Terrible professor. If I could give him a 0 I would. Everything he does is just really bad.
Don't take him if you are not good at math
I want to cry for anyone who ends up in this class. If you want to transfer, your goals end in this class. I'm sorry. He's really that bad. I want you to get out of this class at all costs. No one deserves the things he puts his unlucky student's through. He's a teacher who does the opposite: makes you despise math. Truly disgusting.
Absolutely horrible. Do not take Bert Lo. You will be accused of cheating. Doesnt matter you did cheat or not, you will be in trouble. Bert also requires students to self grading quizzes and exams. I have no idea am I a student or a teacher. He is so lazy that doesnt want to do grading on his behalf. Awful
So basically in this class, there isn't any required homework to be done. But I suggest you do it, as a lot of test/quiz questions are based off of homework. His lectures are great, gives you nice shortcuts his problems. Tests were straightforward although tough. Listen to lecture and do the homework and you'll be good. He also gives extra credit.
This was without the hardest class I ever had to take at De Anza. It got to the point where I was neglecting work for my other two classes just so I could barely pass this one. I seriously thought my application to a UC would get rescinded. There were 40 students at the start class, and less than 10 by the time of the final. STAY AWAY.
When you see his name. Run 1: This teacher does not really teach at all. You are just watching lectures ahead of time and doing group work every time we meet on zoom. But the thing is the group work is not on google drive, so its not actually group work, I don't even see the purpose of meeting on zoom.
2: He is super strict due to attendance. Even you show up, if you don't turn on the camera, he still mark you off which is ridiculous because we are just doing the nonsense group work, and nobody actually discuss with each other since its not on google drive. 3: He does not allow you to use calculator . (first time in my 19 years of life
He is the only teacher that I think just does not want you to pass on purpose. He doesn't teach and the group work is nonsense, but he still mark you off even for you not turning on the camera. He has his own freaking rules on grading. If you do not write everything out, he will give you zero, even you did, he still comment on u.
I think almost half of the class dropped including me. His class is very time consuming and can't get harder. you would have to follow each and everything what he says specially how you answer in the quiz. Just don't take it. but he teaches good ..i think so
He is the hardest teacher I have ever had. I passed Calculus BC but decided to take 1a to brush up on it. His tests are impossible, are the only points in the class, and he doesn't curve. He will flunk the majority of the class without hesitation. Most of the stuff is in such absurd detail, unless you are a math major, you won't ever need it.
Are you ready to feel overwhelmed and lost? If you care about your grades, DO NOT take classes with this professor. You are bombarded with midterms and quizzes. Either you do all your work his way, or you get no credit. He took off points from a quiz because I drew a sketch of a graph "too straight"... A SKETCH. You have been warned.
It seemed that he is a good professor, but after the first midterm, I understood how a lot he expects from students. He will give you 0 on midterm unless you have the exact solutions as he has.
there are a lot of things, here's a few - quiz are self-graded - got right answer? but diff method? you need to defend it in office hours - homework is not required but would greatly help if you do it although time consuming - tests are harder than his examples - quizzes and tests are the only things that he grades - if you're behind the class GL!
worst teacher I've ever taken as quizzes and tests were the only thing that's graded but quizzes are self-graded so you need to defend your work if you got the right answer but a different method, otherwise treated as cheated. For calc1a and as a first calculus class for many people, I don't recommend taking him as he is a very tough class to have.
We meet up in zoom for group work based on recorded lectures he's given us on the previous day. On this recorded lectures, he explains THE BARE MINIMUM (easy things of the topic) but when it comes to quizzes and tests... He wants us to do harder things that he didn't even taught us to do. STAY AWAY FROM HIS CLASS, TRUST ME
Prof Lo is tough but fair. He takes strict attendance, sets absolute deadlines for quizzes and midterms, and expects the questions to be answered precisely. However, he does all that to help his students achieve perfection. His lectures are thorough and easy to understand (tip: take screenshots), and he's very approachable in-office hours.
Pros: - Well organized. - Concise lectures. - Frequent office hours. Cons: - Midterm and final account for ~45% of your grade. - Uses his own website as opposed to Canvas, which is a hassle to navigate. - Will randomly call on people if no one speaks up, and will berate you if you aren't following along. - Homework accounts for 0% of your grade.
Why is this person still teaching??? He's AWFUL. Does he have some sort of internal connection with the Mathematics Board that allows him to continue teaching and ruining student lives at De Anza? Multiple people have not been able to transfer because he FAILED them for getting the right answer with the wrong methods -- his methods. Remove him!!!!!
He is very tough, the only way to pass is to read ahead to know what the topic is going to be and he usually fills in the gaps in the lectures. You need to dedicate at least 15 hours a week of homework/reading for him or else your will fall behind. His test are done his way, follow steps done in lecture and apply it to test problems.
His lectures were good and clear but his tests were super hard. We had 3 take home tests+4 take home quizzes and then a 2 hour 5 question final that no one finished. This class is good if you want to learn DE but not if you want an easy A. This was by FAR the hardest math class I have ever taken. He also gives hella hw thats optional
Mustve taken a lot of the feedback. He is the best math lecturer Ive had at De Anza, super clear, no accent, and the concepts made sense to me. Explains well in OH. No HW to turn in and all exams/quizzes are take home except final. Super big curve at the end, thought I would get a B at most but ended with an A+, would take again 100%.
Course is pretty much only graded on quizzes/tests, so make sure you understand the concepts well. Every quiz/test was take home except for the final - which really helped. Very accessible during office hours, and is even open to meet outside of OH if you email him about it.
This class tests your mental fortitude. There were times I fell into near depression thinking of this class. Homework is optional, tests are the only thing graded (based on lectures; try to understand the concepts instead of just solving). You will see many people initially but towards the end, there will barely be anyone left (There were 6 people)
Not an easy class but you'll definitely learn a lot from him. He teaches very very clear, just pay attention and write down everything he wrote, then use it for your quizzes and midterms. The only proctored exam was the final exam. Don't skip the class, if you skip the class, watch the recorded lecture. I expect a C and got an A-
