don't take this class or any class this woman teaches for that matter. i'm sure she knows her subject very well ( brit lit).however, she does not seem to understand that students do take other classes aside from hers and might also have jobs or something.
dreadful, simply dreadful. the term femnazi comes to mind. out of touch with today, stuck in victorian age.
Horrible professor. Her expectations were far too high. And for a British literature survey course, she focused more on technical writing and less on the actual material. Not clear at all. Rude to the students, and disregarded their questions.
In a word? "magical"
Very little or no people skills. She takes things way too personally, which gets in the way of her teaching. 2000 pages of reading a semester-this is not HARVARD LAW!!! At CSUN, when we take 200 level classes, that is what we expect...that's it.
worst teacher at CSUN
I didn't love this class because it did entail a huge amount of time for a 200 level class. She is a tough grader who offers many vague comments that do not offer much guidance to the students. Exams are LONG, so know the material well so you can finish.
After taking Dr. Wightman's class I found hope since there is an intelligent person teaching a difficult subject. A 200 level course does not mean we read Dr Seus, so I found her assignments sufficiant, her people skills pleasant & her grading fair.
excellent class!
Wightman is nice and smart, despite what everyone else seems to think at this site!!! And she's very cute. I could listen to her talk about poetry all day... and night. ;-)
Although intellegent and pseudo-cute, she is extraordinarily condescending.Young and a dinosaur at the same time,Her methods are old school, tests are tedious as are her lectures. She does not allow differences of opinion...she is "right" all th
Has a sassy, sarcastic sense of humor that can be taken the wrong way if you aren't prepared. She is thorough in her subject, but rigid in her teaching methods. Can be tough on the grading but is willing to work with you. IMO, an enjoyable person.
I liked her but she is a very tough grader and if she doesn't click with you, you could be in trouble.
Grossly condescending and intolerant of differing viewpoints.
She is a good teacher. She may come off as harsh, but overall she is very nice and helpful. I got along with her very well. She comes prepared to class, and really gets kids to participate!
I did not like her at first, but she ended up being a fair grader. A lot of work, but I would not mind taking her again
She is cool but she's not the type you can ****. Her class is a lot of work so be prepared for it, also her test are no joke and even if you are the type of person who never takes up all the time for exams, you will in her class. But she's fair, good professor.
She is an excellent lit. professor, her standards are high, you will come out of her class better prepared to examine literature and as a stronger writer

This teacher is downright mean!! Soo Condecsending and combative. Likes to make students feel stupid. Does not allow opposing views and does not make time for students. Avoid!!! Arguments break out all most every class and she is unwilling to accept other points of view.
She can be a real smart-ass, but she isn't malicious about it. If you offer a flawed reading of something, she will point it out. Her grading pulls no punches, especially on papers: she is harsh, but fair. Exams will bust your balls too.
Condescending and rude in class. Coddles those in class who regurgitate her lectures, and bashes those who think for themselves. Has a poor grasp of poetry but a decent knowledge of British history; thinks her degree gets her out of having to teach well. Avoid her if you're a grad student.

She is so understanding and helpful. She will make time to meet you at her office if you have work issues. She explains why she grades the way she does. Very bright and intelligent. Very knowledgeable in British Literature. Good class discussions. Open minded. Very pleasant professor. As long as you show her respect, she will show you respect.
I love this prof....I was never her star student, but there is nothing like a good cup of tea in her office. I learned a TON from her too....
I loved her class. She made Post Colonial Lit very entertaining. With the exception of Joyce, her selection of novels was excellent. I dreaded reading a novel a week but I enjoyed them all. I now read these authors in my own spare time. And I've graduated! If you expect to coast, don't take her. When youve reached the senior seminar level, you should be very serious about your academics and your grades. She is also very pleasant on the eyes. Very beautiful if you want to spend 3 hours staring at a teacher.
I learned alot, but the others are right she is mean. Very mean. She can be nice when she tries but the key word is tries. Smart
She can be very condescending and rude. But she is understanding and helpful if you go to her for it. Sometimes she is unclear... but she means well. I do not like reading a novel like Jane Eyre in a week... But... I guess thats how she wants to do it.
Do not take her! She will doubt everything that you say, do, and write. She gave me such a hard time in this class. AVOID her if you can!!!
Difficult if you do not ask for help. I agree, she is rude, and does not realize this. She made me feel dumb sometimes, but I went to her office hours and asked her to pin point everything she wanted out of me..I did it and I got my desired grade. Overall, I learned a lot about how to explicate, which is something she stresses.
I disagree with the others. Wightman is a great professor, knows A LOT about British lit, very helpful if you ask for it. She likes participation, any will do. She is a challenging teacher, but grades fairly. If you do your work and show up to class, you will be fine. Study hard for midterm, paper & final, it will make or break your grade, also qui
very smart, focused, knowledgable, unpretentious, & clear. overreacts too harshly/quickly sometimes, but understandable given how women profs are alwyz challengd, harrassd, & treated unfairly. maybe that's why people's impression of "meanness" here. also: really hot, intellectually & physically. had big crush on her, hard to concentrate sometimes.
Very Hot, very smart. Cares about her students. Pushes students to do the best, but will help when asked. Grades tough but fairly. Very knowledgable about Brit and Irish Lit. Very passionate about work. Demands participation, so read the work. Very cute professor.
I did learn quite a bit in her class, however, I found her to be extremely condescending. She acts more like a highschool teacher than a college prof. She grades too harshly and once she gives you a grade (like a B) she will always consider you a b student. Even if your work improves.
Challenges students in the right way. Demand for class participation may seem a bit annoying at first, but in the end makes for a much better class environment. Grades fairly and if you listen to her, your grades will improve - she actually teaches!

Can be harsh, hard, and condescending, and I started out almost hating her, but she grew on me. She has her own particular teaching style and that is something you have to get used to. Very knowledgeable, interesting(and yes, beautiful), and very helpful during office hours. Do the readings and show up with something intelligent to say.
This professor is so interesting and knowledgeable that it can be intimidating, but her class is definitely worth taking. By the end of the semester, it was my favorite and I was actually sad to see it end. You can learn a lot from this professor if you put forth the effort. She's great.
She made students feel stupid when they asked questions and shot down their ideas. She was an extremely hard grader.
She is very condescending towards students, but I learned alot from her. I'm in the minority class because I like her, a great sense of humor and VERY, VERY knowledgable. She's strict on attendance and she can be a hard ass but she warns you at the beginning of the semester. She will challenge you and your claim. Good luck!
She is what a college professor should be: very knowledgeable, intelligent, and helpful. She is quite challenging, but that's what makes this class worthwhile. Each class session will make you think and better appreciate the beauty of lit. She may come off as a bit condescending and unapproachable at first- her brilliance more than makes up for it!
NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS! She's mean You can't have a diffrence in opinion because she will make you look stupid infront of the whole class and throw her PHD in your face I mean it. She will make fun of you just because She loves the you know what kissers Lots of work + humiliation in order to get a good grade hidden requirement: Going to Office Hours
Dr. Wightman is awesome! Her class was well worth taking. She was always kind to other points of view, as long as you could back up what you were saying. She was also very accomodating to students's needs. Take her if you want a challenging and fun English class.
She is friendly, good sense of humor and very knowledgable. But she is a grading overrachiever who take off points for everything. When you write papers for her, pretend that she does not know the material as she will want you to explain everything. Reading between the lines is none existent here.
Super anal about everything! She doesn't give a dam about your problems but she'll be sure to tell you about hers. Very condecending and thinks too much of herself. She's not very organized and her around the circle teaching method always felt like an AA meeting instead of a group discussion. She expects a lot but does not offer the same.
worst teacher in CSUN!!!! mean makes fun of you dosent care about your feelings. Too much work! the final and midterm ridiculous hard and impossible.
She is a great teacher but her attitude towards students is negative. She will speak to you like an idiot, even if shes the one who messes up. He class is pretty easy, participation is a MUST. Not an easy A but changes grades on essays if you rewrite.
Very physically attractive, but that's it! Beneath it all, she is as empty as one can get.
Yes, she needs to work on her people skills. She does make you feel like an ant, but you learn ALOT in her class. If you go to office hours, when you get past the evil, she will help you get to where you need to be in her class.
Not HOTT HOTT, but yes very attractive, great smile and personality. NO BS, this is not an easy class, but very rewarding and worth taking, alhtough I don't think I got the best grade. Does require a lot of time. But again, very rewarding.
w0rse teacher eVER!!!!
Just FYI, this is a hard teacher. She has both positive and negative aspects....if you like formalist style teaching, she is wonderful. If you prefer to think creatively, this is not the teacher for you.
BEWARE: She's got a HUGE EGO! She's a blast during lectures, but has no problem cutting you down if you're "off" in the slightest. I never fell asleep in class, but I didn't learn as much as I thought I would. Interesting class, but not really worth all the work.
VERYY interesting class. I took her my freshman year and i didnt find her class difficult at all. U just need to do the reading, attending class is mandatory but the time flys by. She keeps class very interesting and is dedicated to teaching the subject to its fullest. If ur complaining about her class, then you don't belong in college.
First impression= she tries to hard to be funny. She thinks she's witty--but she's not. She acts like she thinks very highly of herself. Lots of work, more than most actually. Run for cover!
I learned a lot in this class. Lectures are organized and easy to follow. The grading wasn't unfair and not particularly difficult, guidelines are clear on tests and paper assignments. Needs to work on her bed side manner! At times she will demand participation from the class, I prefer a professor that ENCOURAGES participation NOT demands!!
One minute, she was saccharine sweet; the next, she was screaming "WHO IS TALKING?!?!?!?! IT'S (EXPLETIVE) RUDE!!!!" at seemingly no one. Work load was preposterous. This is one of those professors who doesn't care that her students have families, jobs, other classes, etc. Makes vague, sometimes nonsensical statements, expects you to memorize them.
Anytime there is a bad review on this site, one thinks, "student revenge." I don't know what to tell you. Take her and you'll see why she has such low ratings by English Majors. You can't go outside the Formalist tradition, her lectures are "bio's" read straight from Norton. Uses fear in the classroom. I have never seen students apologize so much.
Beyond a doubt, an intelligent professor. Unfortunately she's rude, condescending, and unfit to teach. Her expectations are high and her standars nebulous. I felt as though I had never writen a paper in my life. Her class will yield nothing but anxiety and fear. Office hrs are no less scathing thn lecture. Approach at ur GPAs risk. she's impossible
WORST professor ever, she shouldn't be teaching, she needs to learn how to respect, she has big ego, it's her mission to fail students, she takes points off if it's not her "style" of writing, comments, etc DO NOT TAKE HER!!
regret taking this class; should've have gotten somebody else who's true at teaching. risk GPAs, if a paper is a B paper, she gives a C or D instead. not worth it, she's a waste of bull.
Her lectures were very scattered, her language was very abstract, her directions for her weird "research paper" were ambiguous, and she was extremely rude to her students. If you want to learn anything outside what the text says, you won't. Worst class ever. Avoid her, take Bryson instead.
How much convincing do you need? Hard and easy ratings don't make sense. She simply cant teach. She's smart, but all professors are. She cant do the second part, and that's the most important. Who cares about GPA. She can't teach.
Complaints from students about this teacher are high. Speak with her former students, they will not be optimistic. She should reconsider her overall profession and start anew. Class occupancy trickled dramatically to about 10 students by the end of the semester. -I can not see her lasting any longer.
Ya Dr. Wightman is incredibly, the hardest class I've ever taken to be honest. However, if you have a relatively easy semester with the rest of your classes, I would recommend you take her, because you learn a LOT of technical aspects to literature, which are really helpful if you enjoy reading and writing.
She may be brilliant as some have touted. Fine, she is smart, but she is a sub par professor. She will disagree with you and completely destroy your ideas out loud and make you doubt your abilities as writers. She is a Formalist/New Critic, an antiquated and useless discourse in Humanities. You may like the material, but the class is demoralizing.
horrible professor. didn't learn anything in this class, her expectations make no sense. worthless.
Terrible professor. Formalist expectations. Makes fun of students in class. Not a productive educator. A very poor teacher. She should be a crossing guard. How much convincing do you need prospective student? Look at her history on this site.
She is very intelligent but she makes the environment of her classroom hostile through her treatment of students. She comes off as patronizing and ****y if you: voice an opinion that differs from hers, express knowledge she hasn't taught yet, and/or fail to spit back up everything she has lectured on in the exact same way she fed it to you.
She's a hard grader and her class can be stressful. But she grows on you and you'll definitely learn the material. Take when you have a lighter class/work load. Also be sure to go to office hours it helps a lot!
FYI, don't expect to earn the grade you believe to deserve. She claims herself to be a "hard-grader" but the truth to be said that she is a "grade-abuser" in other words, approaches your GPAs at risk. She acts highly of herself and yells/cusses if you try to share your interpretations of the literature if it's not her perspective. Avoid her!
had her for Engl259 last year shes untit to teach, she demands for work load that isn't even taught until Engl355. Ridiculously impossible to approach her, but instead she approaches your GPAs at risks. Avoid her under no costs! torturing students is all she wants to do.
I had Dr. Wightman her very first semester at CSUN back in 2002. She demanded a lot of work, but I never expected an easy class. I loved this prof because of her high expectations... and she was always willing to help when asked. Also had her for my thesis class. Very personable. Very likable. Smart as a whip!
Worst professor at CSUN, or anywhere else for that matter, that I have ever taken. She is demoralizing, rude, abrupt, and seems to take joy in nothing more than breaking the spirits of her students. There is absolutely no fairness in her grading approach because no one is as brilliant as her, and thus is an idiot and deserves to be told so. AVOID!
Dr. Wightman is the best professor I have ever had. Yes, the class is tough and not one slack off in. If you're willing to put in the work, then what you can get out of it is completely worth it. The subject matter is so fascinating and you can tell that she not only knows her stuff, but she is very passionate about the subject. Highly recommended!
Oh where to start with her, first she has to be the worst and inconsiderate teacher I have ever taken in my long academic career please, please stay away from this teacher a all costs you will thank yourself in the end.
I've been a teacher for over 4 years now. Teachers have a lot of power in the classroom. They have the power to motivate or tear down a student with the flick of a switch. Thus, teachers create the weather in the classroom. Wightman would create a room filled with fear--not enjoyment. I learned how not to teach from her.
She expects you to work for the grade you get. In the end your grade is based on how hard you worked and how much you have learned. Yes, the course she planned out is rigorous, but if you actually follow through and do all the assignments as they should be done. You should see an improvement in your writing. Not to mention she is a character!
Paying attention to her instructions will greatly benefit your writing. However, figuring out exactly how to change your writing is a very difficult process that seriously lacks clear direction. If you must take her I strongly suggest taking excellent notes and going to office hours frequently. Attendance is a must and a good grade is difficult.
I have so much respect for this woman. She's tough in every sense of the word & has a low tolerance for mediocrity I find refreshing at CSUN. She cares very much for her students, but lacks tact, and some of her criticism can feel unduly harsh. Expectations can seem unclear, but if you pay close enough attention she'll make you a better writer.
One of the best professors I've taken. She's hard, but I remember every single lecture. She goes over something 100x until she knows that everyone understands it. People who complain about her class are just upset because they thought they could slack off, but you can't do that in her class. Take her. You'll walk out much more intelligent.
Yes, she's tough and she doesn't tolerate BS. She's one of the most rigorous professors I've taken at CSUN. Her lectures are comprehensive, and she's always VERY clear about what she wants from her students. She really cares about her students and their development as writers/students of English. I'm 100% a better student and writer.
Not a strong teacher. I don't understand the, You will be a better writer because of her" argument. You have to write on "her" style--period. Everyone was afraid to participate last year.
I took Dr. Wightman and it was the hardest class I have ever taken. With that being said, she is a fair grader if you put effort into your assignments and meet with her in her office. I expected a low grade in the class and got an A by the end of the semester. She will also give you more points on the assignment she thinks you did better on. GL
This professor needs to learn how to proof read emails before sending them out!! So unprofessional!
Dr. Wightman is the best!! Take any of her classes and you are guaranteed to come out a much better, articulate writer. Kind, funny, and an occasional swearer, Dr. Wightman cares about her students and because she cares she is willing to push each and every one of her studentsjust so that they can improve. Put in the time and put in the effort!
Work is of moderate difficulty. Fair grader. Class is terrible. If you are the smartest, most cultured student, you're in luck. Others beware that she can be very harsh, impolite, and will humiliate you for getting answers wrong. She wonders why nobody answers her lecture questions. They're terrified of her. I don't speak in class anymore.
Just an all around terrible teacher.
I honestly don't know what other people are talking about. Her modernism class is super fun!! You get to play a semester-long game & you learn so much more from the game than lectures. If you're a creative writer, you'll love the class; if you're a lit. major, you'll love the class; really, anyone who's in this class & plays the game enjoys it!
This is the first English class where my mid term and final grade depended on my acting skills. I love Professor Wightman. I can see how shed intimidate some, but youll be fine as long as you put some effort. She will not baby you, shell make you use properly use your brain. Even for the acting, you need to put your brain into gear.
Very Tough. Half of the semester is spent reviewing terms and she gives random pop quizzes. You are not allowed to regurgitate what she says in the lecture on your quizzes. Yeah, she's one of THOSE professors. The other half of the semester is spent on playing a long game. You do have to act. Don't visit her office hours. She gets agitated easily.
Not clear on grading criteria, she never updated grades. Even when I got a B as a final grade she didn't upload any graded assignments. I had no idea what my grade was the whole time. There are amazing Literature professors who actually teach, avoid professor Wightman
Don't waste your time with this professor. Doesn't have a clear courseboard and is overall annoying.
Had her for a summer class and she gave very little feedback on how well we did for grades. She grades EVERYTHING at the end of the class, and you don't know what your grade is until the end, and she delayed posting grades. When you get your grade, you can't even look back at the assignments to see why you got that grade. Regret this class.
Don't take her if you like good organization and time-management skills in your professors. She doesn't grade half the semester's work, posts assignments last minute (on spring break and weekends). No feedback unless you go to office hours. Very little guidance.
The workload wasn't anything crazy. The only thing is that the first two assignments are due on Tuesday, which doesn't give you much time. However, they are fairly simple assignments. She does not grade work, but she has required Zoom check-ins twice in the semester, where you can discuss your grade, and she allows late work with a penalty.
Never had such a stressful professor. I passed with an A, but I had no idea what my grade was for the entirety of the class. She refuses to grade/give feedback on your writing, so you could be failing and not have a clue. She assigns group work ( in an online class), doesn't know how canvas works, and is v condescending. Avoid.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. We learned nothing, so the material wasn't that difficult, but SHE makes the course hard. She didn't grade anything until the final week, didn't explain the requirements of any of the assignments, and was VERY rude. She also doesn't understand how to use Canvas. Take ANYONE else.
