She is a good prof if u attend the classes and pay attention

keeps mentioning same stuff over and over again

Her crim 100 class can be tedious, she focuses too much on Discretion. De Beer--We got it the first time. There are more intereting things that she could focus. I have heard she is excellent in her other classes though.
Made it ridiculously hard for a 100 level course. A hard marker- difficult exams. We had to do a debate which I think was marked very unfair.
Very helpful and encouraging. I enjoyed all 3 classes I took with her. Balances her career with being a full time mother. Incredible personality and giving person. Very clear and helpful.
Two words I will never ever forget: Discretion and Recidivism!!!! Thanx Beth!
well organized, genuine person
Beth was my first instructor at DC, took 150, 170 and 275 with her as well, she changed my whole outlook on school for the better. There should be more like her, or atleast more that teach like her.
Good explanations, but tough tests. Wastes too much time recapping the previous class.
good lectures- easy to follow, hard marker... somewhat unfair... especially in the manner of debates!! marking aside- good teacher
Very structured class, almost too much so, any time the discussion went off topic it was frowned upon. The debate was VERY unfairly marked.
a very shrill voice makes the lectures almost like torture. She went into detail on the wrong topics and skimped on several important points. Very confrontational delivery style, the class was constantly on their toes.
A very hard marker but a wonderful teacher. You need to know your stuff for her class. She is the best instructer for this class.
Suck up or you will fail. I would never take a class with her again.
Overall good teacher, hard marker, structured lectures do help. Long lectures, sometimes hard to sit through, but otherwise good teacher.
A tough cookie, but a sweet one too. Very informative, structured, serious atmosphere but also very objective and strightforward.Recommended for people who study only.
you must focus in the class but the teacher is awesome and the classes are very meaningful..i enjoyed this class and recommend it and her to everyone
If you don't mind torture take one of her classes.Lectures are so painfull and focus on all the wrong points. The range of marks on debates are very slim, good or bad.Tests have Q's that aren't even in this course.Very unfair marker.
She is a good teacher, but hard marker, her debates can be tough if you dont do the proper research, study for ALL exams because they can be tricky! overall she is good at getting the information across!
She is a difficult marker. Her lectures are straighforward but boring. The debates are evil. Make sure you read the text book and readings or you won't do very well on tests.
Pretty good teacher, you must read the chapters to do well on the tests, no paper in this class, debate was pretty easy, recommended
Awesum teacher! I'm a second year crim student and shes the best teacher I've had yet. Very clear. Tests are hard, just study and keep up with readings. LONG lectures though, but she gets to the point and drills it into ur head.
Put it this way, students call her De B****. Very very hard marker
Awesome teacher! keep up the good work Beth! :)
AWESOME TEACHER...totally recommend her! u gotta study for the examz tho...or u won't pass. Study lecture notes BIG TIME.
i think she is a straight shooter- can't be dumb to pass the course but she drills the points into your head so if you can read and you show up sober - also debate instead of parer - you'll appreciate that midsemester.
If you want to improve your GPA, you can't miss taking her. You must do the readings to pass. expect DISCRETION in CJS all exams in this course
Beth is awesome instructor who is very intelligent and comes to class prepared and she does not waste a single minute to get to work. Her exams are based on lecture notes and readings, but must study hard to get a decent mark. Debates were marked unfairly, and seemed to favour some students.
A very accessible prof. Get to know her away from the lectures and you will better understand her position on her exams. In other words meet in her office and find out her backround. Fair and hard marker!
u have to be a fast/ neat note taker, she just lectures and u write down notes, shes fair in her marking...dont really see the point of the debates, they just take up too much time, and u get tested on it. we pay to hear her talk, not other ppl!!
I have taken three classes with beth and i find that i learn the most in her classes. she is clear with her lectures, her tests can be hard if you dont study. overall she is one of the best teachers i have had. If you are serious about crim and learning take her!
she sucks and she favours stupid people

i just want to know who gave her a mark for hotness????? are you serious???? or you just wanted to be funny. oh btw i didn't think she was a good teacher at all.
Classes are spent note taking. you get to do a debate which is pretty easy worth 30%. and you get a few exams. nothing to hard. she makes it pretty easy to undstand whats going on.
You will have to work. She isn't easy when it comes to marking. She even tells you that she will work you hard till about the end. Tests are hard, study it hard thats all i can say.
De Beer is great. She is a very interesting prof and really puts the time in. She gives you a really good account of the realities of the corrections field and she definitely inspired me!
Da Beer's an okay prof. She makes the material quite boring and dry but it's an alright class.
She's nice, but theres lots of reading, and her tests are a bit hard.
i think shes a really good teacher, really focuses on her notes.. and clarifies stuff before each class.
Very interesting teacher, her lectures are good, take lots of notes, because they will be on the test, her tests are fair, she likes to use lots of "all of the above" on her m/c part of tests, the book isn't really used, i didn't read the book once and ended up with a b- in the course, she kinda cute too.
Great teacher! love her lectures, I retain a lot of the information she provides
Very good teacher as long as you attend class and take notes! She makes the class exciting with the debates she has each person of the class do! her lectures are clear, tests are not easy, but if you study your notes you'll do fine
attendance and notetaking is a must! multiple choice portions on her tests are extremely brutal. her definitions are okay if you know your stuff. she said herself, she's "tough but fair". everything in your notes and your textbook is fair game on a test. do your readings or else you won't do well.
This professor DOES NOT write ANY notes, nor POST them up. You have to attend her class just to listen to what she has for the so-called study material. The Course pack was a joke, i spent my money buying tables of contents. The debate portion was a complete waste of time and her tests were ridiculous for a FIRST YEAR COURSE (m/c + written + essay)
Read the multiple terrible reviews from previous students before you choose this prof. Seems to be agreement on the fact that her tests are absolutely rediculous for a 1st year course. The multiple choice questions are worded 2 confuse you, and lecture notes were worthless study material. Dont take her if U want a teacher who wants you 2 succeed.
attendance is mandatory...good teacher but her tests are hard especially m/c. need to take a lot of notes but overall her class was interesting
Beth is an amazing professor. She is relatively hard. You need to attend class. However she is hard but fair. She will look over your exams with precaution. She makes sure that she gives you every mark you deserve.
I learned alot in Beth's class. She is slightly intimidating which kindof scares you into studying. The tests are quite hard, the multiple choice is absolutely brutal, no matter if you study your butt off or not. Overall a good teacher, but tests are pushing it for a 100 level course.
Fun interactive class. Course easy to understand. Mt n final look easy but write lots on defn and paragraph to get full marks. No paper but a debate. Prepare 5 mins on a given topic and 1 q for opposing side. She's tough b/c she wants us to do well to get into uni.
Beth is an annoying teacher!!i beg every student out there to not taking her!She is a cranky old lady who is extremley annoying!she makes u do a debate instaed of apaper and u have to stand in front of the class and talk for 7 minutes and then the other group get to slam u and if u dont answer them correctly u are screwed!Have fun with her exams :(
She`s a great teacher except that she lecture too fast. She knows what she`s doing and she does that good. It was a pleasure to have her as a teacher. The exams are hard but in the end it is our job to study. If you don`t like it "McDonalds is waiting for you" with a new job.Don`t miss any of her classes, participate during the debates, read your n
Beth is an amazing teacher if you like to get involved in class, There is no paper but there is a debate which really challenges your comprehension of the course. She is really personable after you get to know her and really cares about her students success!! I've taken a few classes with her and hope to take some more.
Very hard teacher, hard exams, intimidating so you are scared to even study, you think you did good but not at all, debates are a waste of time, papers would have been better, way too much reading, text books are a must.
Beth is a great teacher. She does lecture too fast, but suck it up cause thats life. She prepares you for her tests by doing review at the beginning of each class. Pay attention to that review. It's important. Her tests are hard, but you learn a lot.
Loved her class. Must show up for class, take notes, and read your text book. Shes up for discussions and gives you plenty of oppurtunites to request help and ask questions. Debate(10%) and paper(15%) werent bad. Tests All written no M/C. She knows her stuff when it comes to feminism. Again loved this class.
Beth is an amazing instructor. She is passionate in what she does, and knows her materials well. As long as you pay attention and participate in discussions, you will do well. I highly recommend her as an instructor, overall. Lovely lady!
I really liked her classes. Her exams were based mostly on the notes in class so I found that her tests were pretty easy. Whenever I had a question about anything she always gave a clear answer. We did have to do a debate, but it was easy.
Unclear at first but once you understand her expectations it's quite easy to achieve an A in her class. Assignments - reference ALL relevant material from the textbook, don't leave out ANYTHING if you want top marks. Make use of practice exams and you'll do well on the final. I barely studied and still did well.
She's an average professor. You have to do a debate in her class.
Once you understand what she's looking for with the assignments she assigns it's incredibly easy to achieve a high grade however understanding what she wants is the difficult part. I even asked and her answers were quite vague, I was left to figure most things out on my own. Final exam is all multiple choice t/f.
She was a fairly good teacher, her tests were a little bit tough however. Make sure you read the textbook as a lot of what's on the tests are from the textbook.
awesome teacher, supper kind and helpful
Watch out for this one. One day she likes you and the next she doesn't. She's quite rude and does not hesitate to make you look stupid in front of the class. Her course pack is a money grab. Her assignments aren't hard but quite frankly I'd rather take a hard class then have to listen to her for another semester. Has a lot of attitude.
Wow, Beth is my all time favorite prof, especially at Douglas. I was devastated when I had taken every class she teaches, knowing that my time with her was practically done. She is intelligent and passionate about what she does.. take her corrections course and above all, take her class on the female offender. love you Beth!!
Nice professor, very helpful, tests are a bit tough so you have to read the chapters and lectures carefully. Overall very good professor.
Beth is an amazing teacher. I have so far taken two of her classes and would not mind taking them again. She is a bit of a though marker. But you have to put in some effort and you would pass very well. HER STUDY GUIDES ARE EXTREMELY HELPFUL. She takes time out to review last lass material at the start of every class. DO NOT MISS CLASS!!!!!!
tough marker, tough test, i have a 84 percent average and in her class i got 74. And i tried equally hard.
I took CRIM 1100 online, I suggest not doing that as it's a lot of materials to learn on your own. Weekly discussions worth 2 marks, 3 submitted 1200 word essays (you're supposed to do one every unit but only submit 3 for grading.. screw that!), and one final. I didn't do good on the final, but ended up pulling 80/100 for my overall grade.
Her tests are very fair. Read textbook, listen in lecture and you'll be fine. You have to do a debate in her class so do that as soon as possible to get it out of the way. Very passionate about the subject. You get marks for participation and attendance.
I enjoyed her class! She's very passionate about what she teaches and I love her teaching methods. Just take notes and listen to her lectures, then you will do amazing on the exam. The debates aren't tough, just do your research and present for a good 5 minutes. She is stricter some days but not unfair. She's amazing :)
Overall, Beth was a good teacher and I'd take her again! Her lectures were engaging, interesting and she did some fun activities. She is a fairly hard marker so you do have to put in an effort and work hard but you'll learn a lot.
She is very good at making the course easy to understand and the course was overall very easy as long as you showed up. She was the nicest prof i've ever had.
By far the best prof i've ever had. Very understanding & actually cares about the feedback that students have about the material. Thoroughly explains all the lecture topics & the course pack is literally her slides so you aren't going crazy copying everything down like in other classes. If you do the readings & study you're guaranteed to do well.
her midterm and final were pretty hard. you must read the textbook in order to do well on her exams. also theres a debate and she marks hard on that as well.
At first I was very intimidated by Beth, but after the first few lectures I enjoyed her class more. Her tests are very fair if you pay attention in class and follow the study guide she gives. You have to do a debate in the class which I didn't enjoy very much, but no paper which is nice. Overall, a good teacher and I would take her class again.
I've never felt the need to write a review on here, but Beth truly is an amazing professor! I took my very first online course with her and it was by far my favorite I've ever. Everything is done in a way where even shy people can feel comfortable, if that was a worry of anybody's. She is very kind and the feedback is very easy to make sense of.
Beth is a fantastic teacher, her feedbacks are amazing. She is one of the best teachers I've had in my life. She is very insightful and her analytical skills are amazing. With this teacher, you will develop your critical thinking as well as your interest for Criminology. She is the best! I will remember this teacher for a while.
By Far my favorite professor ever. She is super kind and everyone in my class respected and loved her. Easy pass if you do the readings and pay attention. Exams are nothing to be worried about
I am SO glad I took this . I am still first year and I took this course in my second semester. Beth has easily gone down to be one of my favorite professors at Douglas. She is super nice, approachable and passionate about her job. You can contact her via email or ask her questions during lectures. Great class if you are studying criminology! :)
Favorite professor i have ever had hands down. The debate isn't that difficult as long as you research what you are talking about. tests are super easy if you study just the terms you will do more than okay. No papers which is super nice and the course pack has everything you need in it. I didn't buy the textbook and got an A-
She is amazing!!! truly an inspirational personality. What makes her respectful is that she is very experienced and any student would love to be in her class. The fact that she responds to emails pretty fast makes her, even more, better and accessible. I also love her discussion postings, she makes sure that no student feels shy or uncomfortable.
She's a very easy marker if you put effort into your assignments. Tests are also easy if you study a bit. Honestly, if you have a hard time with her class you're probably not gonna pass many courses at SFU or UBC.
Beth was one of the first teachers Ive had at Douglas College and shes amazing! Shes super caring and her grading is extremely fair. Test are super easy, her discussions are easy too & they give us a chance to interact with other students. She cares a lot about her students it seems!
Beth was a great prof! For an intro course she was very understanding to those who weren't able to submit homework on time but would dock some points for lateness. Her lectures were straight forward if you read the chapters ahead of class. There were 2 midterms and 1 final which were multiple choice and 1 essay question - overall great prof!
Really nice teacher, shes really sweet and caring. I took this class online, very straight forward and a very good elective for anyone to take! Shes a queen, def take her!
One of the best professor I had. I never write reviews here but I had to write one for her. She explains everything so well, she's super helpful and caring. She really wants you to do well in class. Her class is interesting, I really did not miss a single lecture with her.
I'm super happy I took her for CRIM1100. There were no essays, and I was really comfortable with participating in discussions. I actually found her debates super interesting with topics that were engaging. Her lectures are really engaging and I always looked forward to attending class. I would recommend her to any first year students!
Lots of group work. Lots of public discussions. You need to know your stuff before showing up and not be scared to speak in public if you want to do good. She can be condescending, and the overall tone of the course (not the content, tone as in-how she treats you and the class culture) is toxic and you do feel like you're in a corrections facility
Beth De Beer is an amazing and understanding professor. I really enjoyed her class and am so glad that I didn't take it with someone else. She motivates you to try your best and always appreciated class comments. If you're thinking about taking her class - do it. You won't regret it. (P.S - The textbook is online. Don't buy it!)
Not the biggest fan of the group public speaking/debate assignment, but otherwise an easy-going professor who's very knowledgeable and interactive. The class itself is not that difficult in comparison to others that I have taken, such as CRIM 1100, 1150, & 1160. Lots of useful info to learn if you're hoping to pursue law enforcement or corrections.
Second easiest prof in the department of crim, easy course, clear grading criteria. The debate might be a bummer to many if your teammates are coperative, other than fairly decent prof and a decent course for easy marks.
forces you to pay for a textbook when she has the choice to make it free. its not that hard to find a way around paying for the textbook but it is a lot of extra work for you considering that she could literally make the textbooks free for all her students if she chose to.
I took her twice! Shes the easiest prof ive taken, only had 2 big tests and 1 small final. Also had a debate which was also quite easy (approx 750 words). Take her if you want a chill semester.
Beth is a great prof really nice and easily accessible outside of class make sure to read the textbook and take notes or else you will fail P.S if theres a debate always go first because shes less harsh on the first one.
Really enjoyed taking her class! She talks very quietly but is a very nice and fair prof. She does have strict guidelines with exams & the 1 debate but she's clear with what to be expected. Attend lectures as she can clarify anything that's confusing & adds more which can be helpful if u want a good grade - txtbook is mandatory to pass
Beth is a pretty good prof. She is nice, outgoing and knows her stuff. The exams are mostly consisted of M/C and T/F questions. She did cough a lot which made her lectures more difficult to understand. Overall, good prof!
2 easy exams and one small final, super managable class great lecturer very accomodating. one individually marked debate, easy chance to boost your mark. took two classes with her both super simple and easy 1170 1100. can skim the textbook and still do well, exams are multiple choice. take her for a managable semester and a great intro to crimi.
Awesome professor, explains things well and looks at multiple nuanced perspectives of topics. Class requires interaction and participation along with attendance marks. Although textbook is used I rarely reviewed it and was able to score consistently well on the 3 exams (30%,35%,10%). There is a Debate essay (read aloud in class) worth 10%.
Professor Beth is engaging and caring. Exams are straightforward, with a mix of multiple-choice and true/false. Textbook is required, but the online version can be accessed for free. Unstuck ai was a great study tool alongside the provided materials.
