Very good in class but her essays and tests are very harshly graded. She tends to pick out specific details of reading to ask about. Everyone in the class I've talked to can't get about a C

Beth Eck is the greatest professor in JMU's sociology department. She is so passionate and knowledgable and I loved everything she covered in class. Half your grade comes from papers (5 papers 10% each) and she is an incredibly tough grader. the tests were short-answer and based off the readings but the readings are interesting. TAKE HER!!!!

The class has two test, one that has a essay portion, and a final. You also have to write a three page paper on a book that's pretty interesting. If you're not interested in doing a lot of reading, you mat want to avoid this class. The reading is crucial to getting a good grade in the class (lots of application on test). Knowledgable prof and nice.

I love Dr. Eck! She is an amazing lecturer and I wish I could take her for another class. She is so nice and makes all the material easy to understand. Her lectures are genuinely interesting. Attendance is not mandatory, but I would go to every class since the tests are heavily on lecture content. Make sure to read the assigned readings as well

Professor Eck is amazing. She's so passionate about what she's teaching. Some topics can be hard to understand, but she's good about giving examples and answering questions. Her class is organized well with focus on test, reading assignments and one paper. She's a lot of fun and not boring. I love going to her class.

Probably one of the most knowledgeable professors at JMU. Her lectures were very informative and she always tried to keep them interesting. If you are trying to raise your GPA, DO NOT take this class. She will admit that if you do all of the readings and come to every class you will get a C on the tests. With only 3 tests this class is ROUGH.

Dr. Eck is passionate about sociology and if you are into that, then this class will be great for you. Her teaching style is fine, but her grading is too harsh for a general education professor. For students who are used to getting A's in religion, philosophy, etc. this is not going to be as easy. Good professor, but expects too much for gen ed.

For sure one of my favorite professors. She is so knowledgeable and a very fair professor. She gives a lot of reading but the reading isn't pointless, and you won't pass the tests without the reading. Attendance isn't required but the lectures are very important. You'll be fine if you miss a day or two. 10/10 recommend.

I took Eck for Sociology of the family, and she made you work for anything you did. At first, I felt like I wasn't do the best because she was an extremely strict grader. However, I went to her office hours and she was willing to help. After that I really got the hang of her class and learned a lot too.

Dr. Eck is an amazing professor and really knows what she is talking about. She made the lectures interesting and wasn't afraid to ask the class questions either. There is a decent amount of readings but you need to do them in order to pass the tests. You also might get by skipping one or two classes but the tests are also based off of lecture.

Best class I have ever taken. As long as you take good notes and do the reading, the test are easy multiple choice. Dr. Eck knows her stuff and explains things slowly and simply. You can get away with skipping a few lectures but you honestly won't want to because it is super laid back and interesting. She is super organized, no surprises.

Though I enjoyed the class, a majority of the final grade is tests. If you are a good student, but not a good test taker, I do not recommend this course. She truly wants the best for her students and has plenty of office hours. However, as someone who usually passes classes with As, I did not enjoy this class. The material is fun, but hard to grasp

Favorite JMU professors I've ever had! Her lectures are really engaging and she goes pretty slow (writes the important stuff on the board). Short answer part of the test requires reading the book. MC part is pretty easy if you go to class. There's a final paper but it's pretty easy along with noncumulative final. Take her if you can!

She is a really nice person but I studied A LOT for this class and I found it exceptionally hard, but I am also not that good at this kind of stuff. We read about a chapter a week once the semester gets going and it's not too bad but you have to take detailed notes. There are three exams, MC and OR, and the final is not cumulative which is nice.

Dr. Eck has been my favorite professor at James Madison. Her lectures are extremely interesting, so even though attendance is not mandatory you will want to be there. She is very organized and explains up front what she expects from you. There are only 10 graded items in this class and 80% of your final grade is based on 3 tests so beware of that.

Eck is a passionate teacher who has interesting lectures. HOWEVER she expects way too much out of her students for a GenEd class. I would consider myself a good student and the Quizzes are the hardest thing Ive ever taken. Material on quizzes was never taught. Will rank your grade. Should not be this difficult for a GenEd. Very disappointed.

Mrs. Eck makes this class much harder than it needs to be. It's a Gened class and I'd say a majority of the class is taking it for that reason. Yet she treats it like we are all Sociology majors. The quizzes for her online class are absurdly hard, I feel like most of the information isn't even brought up in lecture. 3, 1 page papers in the class .

Professor Eck is a great professor. The quizzes are tough. If you attend office hours and go to the discussion groups, you'll most likely get better grades on them. There are 3 short essays that are graded pretty easily. The Final is a 3-page paper (haven't written it yet.) Very caring and kind professor. You just need to put in the effort.

It's a lot of work for a gen-ed and her quizzes are really hard even if you do the readings. Personally as a prof she's a nice person and want's you to succeed but its definitely not a low maintenance class. You're grade is based off of 3 essays and a final essay and 9 quizzes. She is nice but makes you work for the grade. You have to do well on the reading worksheets otherwise you will not pass. You can reach her outside of class but she does not respond with much which I think is out of her being busy. She is really nice and cares about what she does- it is evident she is knowledgeable on her subject. I really liked her
