She integrated films along with lecture. Entertainment value of films varied, but stay awake, there will be test questions on it. She provides extensive review sheet for tests so you know what to expect.
Great, fun, interesting class! The tests are quite easy and there is minimal outside work requirements. Definitely go to the lecture, as most of test material is in lecture, which is done as overhead notes.
Class was extremely easy, but beware of the group project. Supposed to be 15 minutes in length but some got 30-40 while others were hurried along at the 10 min. mark. Very frustrating since you work your ass off for 10 pitiful points.
The class was extremly easy. I did't have to read any of the course materials to make great grades on the tests as they were purely from lecture, and she would tell you every time she was going over something that was test material. I ditto 12/1/04 with regard to the group projects!
Very good teacher. There's no bs, she teaches straight from the test and gives plenty chances at extra credit. You would have to be a monkey not to pass this class. Highly recommended!!!!!!
class should be easier. i never purchased the book and got a B on both exams. Kind of unresponsive to emails after course but overall not too bad.
Go to class, look at the book for the reviews. She never gives you your test back, so you don't know what you missed. Hard to guage what you're missing. Studying helps very little. Her tests are long and fairly random. Do the extra credit. I got an A.
Go to class, read the slides, take good notes and LISTEN!! She usually gives you most, if not all, of the questions of her [usually multiple choice] tests. She always tells you when a question will be on the test. Lectures sometimes get boring but overall it's an easy class. Easy A.
What a cool class. Dr. Olson was very helpful and she tells you what questions will be on the test! Yeah! Take her class. It is very interesting. She is fun.
Took class online.Do the review and listen to the lectures, she says exactly what will be on the exam. One project but plenty of time to do it.Responds almost immediately to questions on webct!I got an A- also gives extra credit.
Nicest lady ever!!! She is extremely helpful and responds almost immediately to emails. Two exams - which you must take on campus on an assigned Saturday. One project - easy and gives plenty of time to complete. Also gives extra credit. I'm signing up for an upper level course with her next semester just because she is soooo awesome!
Even though I took the class online she is EXTREMELY helpful and prompt in answering questions. Very nice. Listen to the lectures, gives very good hints as to what's going to be on the 2 exams. Read the book too. Also gives a review sheet, which is really helpful. There is 1 project, but its not difficult and there is plenty of time to do it.
I love this lady. Class is very interesting. I took Gender and the Media, and even the guys liked this class. I am taking her again.
This was an online course and Dr. Olson was a nice professor. She was very understanding and gave good notes. I would take other classes that she teaches.
Gender and the Media was such a fun class! I also took Media Effects, which was a lot harder. She is very understanding and she knows that her class is not the only one you're taking, unlike some other profs. Show up, and get an A.
I love history so this course (online) was a perfect way to know how comms evolved. She gives a review sheet. Very prompt with e-mail. Nice, too! MUST listen to her lectures. She will tell you specifically what will be on test. But exam questions were tricky in wording. Thanks to her curve I got A-.
Just listen to lectures and do readings and you'll do well. I took this class online and there were only 2 exams, 100 questions MC & T/F and 1 Field Project in which you have 5 to choose from and only need to do one which are spread out on different dates to satisfy your busy schedule. I love her lectures, she has a great personality, love her!
Class was all online but you come in on Saturdays to take the test on campus. You need to listen to her lectures because she will go through and tell you what maybe on the test and it will be. She also goes through a review and covers everything on the test. Easy class if you give it enough attention.
Dr. Olson is great! The class is straightforward, follows the text, and is genuinely interesting. Dr. Olson is very nice, always responds to emails, and only requires one paper. If you take her in person and she asks a questions outload, someone answer! She will wait... But otherwise, she is interesting and a great teacher.
This class is the worst class ever! Extremely boring! Prof teaches off powerpoint only! Exams are pretty difficult but not impossible to pass. Must go to class for free test answers. Must study for exams and book is really boring! Take another class instead of this one! Professor is nice but has an attitude if you ask questions
I'm not sure why anyone doesn't like Dr. Olson's class! She's extremely clear. She posts the powerpoints online. She uses only multiple choice tests and one easy group project. You don't even need to attend class, really! Her lectures follow the book. If you read the book, which is SHORT, you get an A. Guaranteed. Take this class.
I took her in the summer. It's not the more interesting material, but she uses powerpoints which she posts online in advance. If you read the book, you can answer any question on her multiple choice tests. Totally recommend her. Plus, she's the director of the school...a good person to know.
Dr. Olson is a very nice lady and a good teacher. She is consistent. She uses powerpoints for her lecture and posts them online BEFORE class. There are three multiple choice exams and one group project. If you read the book, you would probably get at least an 80, the other 20 points are questions from the lecture. She's also very helpful.
LOVED this class. She's extremely helpful & the course is very organized. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
Dr. Olson is a good professor but you have to attend class and stay up on assignments. Her exams can be difficult at times so it is necessary to take good notes. I did well in her class and would take her again.
Attendance is not mandatory but it helps to go to receive information about what is the tests. There are 3 tests and one presentation. Everything is pretty is in the class. Easy A
Dr. Olson is a student's dream professor. She is super clear, posts all notes online, and tells you what the test questions will be. All you have to do is show up and listen. There were 3 multiple choie exams. She graded them within 24 hours. Dr. Olson is really there for student success. She's not there to trip you up or fail you. Take her!
Very easy class, to the point of extreme boredom. She's a nice lady, take her and get an A.
easy class to take. there is not much work required and i think 3 tests total. you will also have an easy group project. she gives good reviews the class before the test, so make sure to be present for that class.
I took the online class. It was super easy. 3 tests i think and a project (easy) just read the book and look at the lectures as well as the review sheet. She gives plenty of time to study. Great class and teacher
Pretty easy. You have to study a little bit but the grade you get is the grade you deserve. Good class.
I just finished comm 1301 (online). She is so nice and SO helpful, quick to respond. Just watch the power points & study the deff. i would HIGHLY recommend her. She also is open to curving her tests and provided extra credit. One of the best professors i've ever had.
I LOVED HER CLASS!VERY INTERESTING AND SHE WAS SO NICE AS WELL. DOES REQUIRE STUDYING BUT ITS NOT TOO BAD! I WOULD DEFINITELY TAKE HER AGAIN!
I took this class online, and it was by far the easiest and clearest online class I have taken so far. Easy A if you study ahead of time, easy project that requires you to watch TV! No offense but even without the book if you get less than a B- your kinda stupid. Definitely a good class to take for freshmen, and people who need to pick up their GPA
Very easy professor. Lectures can be a little dry at times. Material may be outdated. Overall she is helpful and may provide specific test questions and answers in class. So good attendance is very beneficial. Grade consisted of tests and 1 project.
One of the sweetest professors ever! Easy material, provides adequate substance for PowerPoint lectures, and interesting project. Highly recommend!
Easy-make sure to attend her class and take note of all her test question giveaways!
Great Prof! Most helpful prof I've every had. I took her online course, and she responds to email questions very quickly. 2 exams and 1 paper. Easy grader on the paper. Keep up with the videos and read the book for exams. The test aren't tricky, but they are long so you'll need to really know the material. Easy A if you put in the effort.
Online Class: The lectures are on the site and the professor basis the test heavily on the textbook. Very specific with words on the test so be careful. This class isn't a GPA booster class...you have to study and work for it. She does give you a 5pts extra credit opp. I'm likely to end up with a B+ because of the test and there are only 2 of them.
Helpful but hard tests
Extremely helpful and organized professor, which is important for an online class. She stays active with discussion and email, and her expectations and assignments are made clear from the beginning. Tests are long but straight forward (I hesitate to say "easy" as that's subjective, but there are certainly no tricks). One simple project due as well
The course wasn't too bad, online. You HAVE to watch the lectures. You also have a field project that is pretty lengthy, be sure to sign up asap for the project group you want or you will get stuck with the harder ones!
Dr. Olson is easy, clear, and helpful. I took this class online over the summer. She even gives you test questions in lecture! No cumulative final! Easy A! TAKE THIS CLASS!
Class is an easy A if you follow syllabus. Two tests and a project. Tests are 100 multiple choice or T/F and come straight from the textbook!
I thinking reading the textbooks and watching the lectures help a lot. I didn't watch many of the lectures. I just read over the powerpoints and skimmed over summations of the chapters. I got Bs on both the test and a B on the essay/project. It should be easy to get an A on the project if you follow it strictly by the objectives and criteria.
I took her online. The grading is simple. 2 tests and a field project. The field project is not bad. But the TEST ARE HARD! You have to take em in Casa. The way she phrases the questions is so confusing. Her review seems simple but when you take the test its really difficult.
Man this teacher is an odd one. She makes her test very difficult due to her wording, but only gives reviews that are extremely simplistic. Im a A+ senior student and her freshman level class was harder than a lot of classes i have taken so far. Would not recommend her. Her video take lectures are pain stakingly boring..... Find a different Prof.
I took this class online. Olson is a helpful professor but her videotaped lectures are just long and boring, its painful. There are only 2 tests, a final, and a final research paper. I feel like everything i learned i didnt really need.
Not a bad class. Take it if you're looking for an easy class, don't take it if you're looking for an interesting one. (It's VERY boring). The tests can seem hard but they're straight out of the textbook. The exams are just really long. Two exams and one paper.
Even though this is an online class I still had to watch nearly every online lecture. They were really interesting and gave all the information I needed for the exams. Took over summer so exams were dense and needed to be well prepared for. I got an A and would recommend to anyone but especially for summer.
Not an easy A. Painfully long and boring lectures. You can pass by just reading the textbook and the same by watching the lectures. Even with reading the textbook AND watching her lectures, her test questions can be vague and confusing. Extra credit helped but was not easy by any stretch. All that is required are 2 tests and a field project.
Have to work A LOT to receive an A. Watching lectures online are VERY boring. Test questions are confusing even if you watched all of the lectures. I spent so much time in this useless class and expected to learn a lot but instead ended up with a B and regret taking it. Take another course if it's an option. 3 tests and 1 project. Project is easy.
Her online class is a bit vague and confusing. My classmates and myself have been emailing each other frequently in order to straighten things out for us. I do really enjoy that she taped her lectures from a summer class and posted them for the fall. I never actually tried reaching out to her, so she may be more helpful than I rated her.
The book is ABSOLUTELY mandatory for this online class. Read week by week too... It makes it much easier. Online, you have two exams and a big project. The exams were 100 questions each, and they were fairly easy if you read thoroughly. Do not stress. The projects fill up quickly (everyone wants the easy ones), so sign up as soon as they open!
She's great. 1301 Online. 2 test and 1 paper. Tests are hard, she words them completely different from the study guide but they're doable. 2 study guides for both tests. Paper is pretty easy. Lectures are so boring. Read the book. Follow the syllabustimeline and you'll do fine.
I took her online & I highly recommend this way. She provides video lectures which are a must + the textbook for the exams. She knows what she's talking about & is passionate about it. I got a 100 on my field project essay & it was actually fun to do plus I love writing! Only two exams & essay FYI. Extra credit opportunities too! Take her !
Only two tests and an essay. You have to go take the tests on campus, which I HATE. I honestly didn't watch the online lectures, way too boring. She gives you a study guide before each test, and that's basically how you pass. I wouldn't take her again.
Hard to make an A in her class because she only has 3 assignments. Field project is super easy. But her 2 tests? Half of what is on tests are stuff she hasn't told you to study for and the questions are worded very vaguely. I worked my butt off and made a solid 85. She has some extra credit chances. She's ok, better than some Comm professors at Uh
Thoroughly learn the concepts in the study guide and memorize any statistics you encounter when reading the material. I wasn't able to access the lectures, but I still got good scores on the tests because I used the book.
Took the online course. 1 project & 2 tests. Online lectures are not all that great but you do need to read the book and watch them to pass the exams. She does not answer questions (says so on her online posts) she expects you to post your question and hope other students have the answer for you. Interesting subject but be ready to work for your A.
Not too difficult, but I wouldn't recommend the class. Two exams and one field project was your only chance in passing the class. An extra credit opportunity was available. Half of the questions on the test were not what we had to study. Didn't enjoy this online class at all.
I took this class online and there aren't a lot of opportunities for grades. There is only one field project and two exams and that's it. I stopped reading the lectures and started cramming the night before the tests. Her lectures are poorly taped and the tests are both 100 questions long and taken at CASA. There is extra credit but not a lot.
Online class is a breeze. 2 tests & 1 project (a paper) make up final grade. Skip watching the lectures & just read the book. Quizlet is your best friend - study it & you'll ace the tests. Extra credit opportunities available. If you really need help, she's there. Best option is a study group on FB or GroupMe. Not a hard class, an A is doable.
Only 3 grades: 2 100 Q's test and paper. She also has Extra Credit. Her review sheet helps with the test a lot, just use quizlet to fill it out. As for the paper, I would use the online library source she links on blackboard!!! she tells us what she wants in the paper in the syllabus VERY clearly so follow it!!
She only has three grades; two 100 question tests and a field project. The criteria is very straight forward. Her reviews are long, but have everything you need. And the tests are easy if you study with the Quizlet. She gives extra credit chances. You won't have to dedicate a lot of time to her course to pass or get a good grade.
I would NOT recommend this class. There are only 3 grades total. 2 tests and 1 essay. If you fail a test it is practically impossible to fix your grade. 5 points of extra credit is given at the very end of the course. Do not take this professor if you need this course.
Would not recommend to take her. Not that many assignments to have chances on increasing your grade. You have to make sure you do good on both exams and the field project. Her exams have nothing to do with the review; you need to memorize 7 whole chapters each exam to do good as well use quizlet for sure. Exams are worded tough.
Here is the thing about this professor. If you have signed up for a class with her than do not be worried. I made an A in the course without really trying too hard to make an A. I only watched the lectures and I seemed to do well enough on the tests. With that said if you can avoid taking her do it at all costs.
DO NOT, whatever you do, take her. You must MEMORIZE all charts and rankings. Memorize every sentence in the text. No need to watch lectures, she won't test you on them. If you screw up one test, forget getting a good grade. 280 points for two 100-question-tests (100 pts/test) and 1 paper (80 pts)+10 extra credit. A 261 is an A. Good luck.
Easy class. However, since it's online, that can pose some problems. For me, I was never able to access her video lectures. But the test is straight from the book and lectures, and I was able to get by through just reading the book. She offers a couple opportunities of extra credit throughout the semester. The pace of the class is super slow.
Three grades total... 2 test and 1 field project. Test material all comes from powerpoint slides/book. Field project was rather easy, I made a 90 and waited til the last minute. Online lectures are semi interesting (could have been worse). She gave 3 or 4 opportunities for extra credit, with all the extra credit it brought my final grade to an A.
The class itself is very easy. I took the class online, but never watched a lecture. Tests are kind of hard because they are 100 questions each. Field project easy.
Great prof, very easy class!
I took this class online and it's very manageable and an easy A. After you take the quizzes take a picture so you can study the questions and answers!! Those questions are always on the test. Study her power points as well for the reviews.
She's awesome and answers every email very thoroughly. Class is manageable, but the tests you actually have to study for
Manageable class. will have to study for exams. Overall she is very good and caring and is very quick to respond to problems. 3 exams no final, one big project, and many quizzes
Her class is entirely research study based so if you miss a class, you probably won't understand the material. You're expected to read before every class. Sometimes her folders will be disorganized but she does put everything you need where they should be. Make sure you read the research for the weekly quizzes. It can be an easy A if you read.
You definitely need the textbook. This was an interesting class to take. I recommend it! However, please note that if you are taking it online, you still need to go to campus for tests. I think there is a way to take the tests remotely if you absolutely have to, but it costs extra.
Very easy class.
She only has a few grades so you have to do good on the tests but if you read the textbook then you'll honestly be fine. A lot of the questions are straight out of the readings. You have room to move at your own pace and she had a few extra credit opportunities as well.
This woman does not know how to write tests. You don't get feedback on your tests, meaning you never get to see where your answers were wrong. She doesn't share that information with you. She will deduct marks for answers you mark as right on the test. Please do not take her because she will ruin your GPA. I'm transferring schools because of her.
Literally one field project paper and 3 tests for the whole semester. Plus she has like 3 extra credit opportunities. Easy A and if you have any questions she responds to her e-mail very fast.
The class was literally an easy A. You get one field project and throughout the semester you get about 4 quizzes due each month at your own pace. I'd definitely take it again it was a relief to deal with compared to all my other classes.
3 exams in CASA, 12 chapter reading quizzes she splits them up 4 chapters per exam, one field project. Exams are really hard you just have to read A LOT and I'm usually an A student.
Three exams in CASA for an online media production class, having to memorize information that you will definitely have to know latter in life such as Sweeps months for television and the any information over the Telecommunications act! Learned so much info I will never use in life and put way more effort in this class than I should have needed to.
I've taken a lot of hard 1000 lvl courses, but this one takes the cake. 70 question exams to do in 40 minutes. Some of the quiz questions have either unclear answers or the answers are not even in the book - and by the way, these questions end up on the test. This was my hardest class and I'm working on 3000-4000 level courses. Do not take her.
I took professor Olsen for COMM 1301 (Media and Society) during the corona virus she made exams 70 questions with only 40 minutes to take the exam! I understand she doesn't want us to cheat but in my opinion that was not enough time and that is what ultimately tanked my grade ):
This class was kind of challenging because the exam questions were very tricky. However, I never really studied before the exams, so that is probably why. I didn't do well on any of the exams and finished the class with a B-. I'm sure if you put in the work you'll do better than I did. She was fast with replying to emails, usually 1-2 days.
Prof. Olson is probably the best professor I have taken in my 3ish years of college (I'm a junior). She's super helpful and answers emails the next day. I told her that there personally wasn't enough time for me to take exams as I'm a slow test taker and she added 10 more minutes. I would highly recommend! The project was easy too. Made a B!
This class was very easy. You're only graded on chapter quizzes, one field project and 3 exams. It's all easy!
Didnt hear/see her since it was asynchronous. Just here because she was really generous to me when something happened in my personal life that meant I couldnt finish the exam on time. Never happened again, and btw dont take advantage of her kindness, though. Take your weekly quizzes + exams are MC and based on facts from the readings.
She is very sweet and understanding but the exams are hard. Each exam is 70 questions and 55 minutes. Just this semester we got her to add an additional 5 minutes. Studying the quizzes helps but exam questions are worded weird. Probably the hardest intro class Ive taken but it is possible to pass with a high B
Had her online, so there's lecture content to speak of. The online textbook was honestly a huge sleeper but the quizzes and tests are very quizletable. The little interaction I had with her personally was nice, though, as she gave me an indefinite extension on the term project that I missed the due date for. She's very lenient with schedules
Media and Society has an online textbook with 9 chapters, and you read each and take a quiz at the end of them which are pretty easy. However, the chapters are long and the tests are based on them, so you can't really avoid the reading. Also, the tests are 70 questions and she doesn't provide an appropriate amount of time for them.
Pretty easy class. Very few assignments to do. I didnt do well on the exams but still got a B+. Coming from a procastinator and pretty lazy student all you have to do is read and do the work you'll be just fine! I say do the field project with the lastest due date because they aren't all due at the same time.
This was an online class with barely any work. You have 6 fairly easy assignments that she gives you months to do, as well as some 10-question quizzes that are easy to complete but also easy to forget about. The tests do have a lot of weight to them so if you do bad you might not get a great grade but they are pretty easy.
Easy class, most quiz/test questions are on quizlet. The deep dive assignments are not clearly graded, one of those who think no one should get a 100. My bone to pick is she did not respond to the two emails I sent about different things, I followed the format she wanted but never got a response. It's an online class, no other way to contact her :l
This class was honestly a mess, once you figure out exactly what she wants it becomes easier but join a Groupme for sure. I'm a pretty good writer so the Deep Dives weren't too hard for me, but the general consensus was that the grading was all over the place and it was hard to know exactly what she was looking for. Not that many grades as well
Professor Olson is pretty good. She has an online textbook and you just read a chapter per week and do an easy quiz after. She also has other assignments on Packback. The course could be organized better but it's pretty easy if you are passionate about the subject.
I enjoyed Professor Olson, She was great! The deep dives were easy, the textbook quizzes weren't hard, and there were three exams. The course could've been organized a bit better, and the deep dives could've had a clear structure as to what she wanted to see in teh essay. Overall, it is an easy class, especially if you procrastinate frequently.
Professor Olson's class is straightforward if you stay on top of the work. The exams are challenging, but Unstuck study and the textbook are great study aids. Overall, an engaging class worth taking.
Took her online summer course. She graded all the assignments the last week of class. I had around 20 quizzes, 3 papers, and 3 exams. Wouldn't take her unless she was the last option because she takes forever to grade
She grades all the assignments the last week of class so you won't know your grade until then. She is very unorganized and doesn't give feedback until the last week of class. I got A+'s on all my exams and I currently have a 90.1 because she grades the papers very harshly. Would not recommend
Great professor and a great communicator. Tests are easy if you study enough. Textbook is a bit pricey at 90$.
