(Previously Beth Newhouse) This class is great. It was elementary school all over again. Expectations are very clear and she makes sure we know what we need to know. She provides a lot of useful information and strategies to use in our future classroom. Workload is easy, it's mapped out from the beginning of the semester.

She is rude, she rolls her eyes at questions. She makes you feel dumb. She loves taking .5 off for anything. I did not like her at all.
The clas was GREAT! took her class for MTE 180 as well. Im not that interested in math but she made it fun. The class for the most part is just a review and shows you how to look at math in different ways. HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER
Beth is awesome! I had another prof for MTE 180 and hated it, but Beth changed my view of elementary math. She is fun and really models good teaching for you.
I love this class! She is an amazing teacher and she really makes going to class fun. Take her, you won't regret it! If you do the homework and come to class, you will easily pass with an A.
She is an amazing teacher! The only students who say bad things about her are the students who don't show up to class. She really made me love and enjoy math and I'm not a math person. I had her for both 180 and 181. I wish she taught another class so that I could have her again. You will not regret taking any class with this instructor.
she's really nice, but she isn't very understanding. she gets frustrated really easily and then will talk down to students. this class is so, incredibly easy, but i have no interest in attending the class because i'm treated like a little kid. and i got to class always. it takes a couple of weeks to realize that she isn't as nice as she first seems
She is probably one of the worst math teachers i have had. She doesn't like when students ask for more help, because she thinks she has done a good enough job explaining and we should have understood her. She is very selfish and rude.
She is a very good teacher and will help you to understand all the material if needed. She makes going to class fun. The class is easy as long as you make it to class and pay attention. You won't go wrong by choosing Beth!
Overall the class is easy but attendance is mandatory because we get review sheets at the end of each class period. Mrs. Schlenker however is nice one day and very snooty another. You always have to be on guard because you never know when shell snap at you. If you are not on your best behavior then she will single you out and become more snooty.
She seems really nice, until you get to know her. She is a control freak and has a short temper. She isn't very flexible or understanding. My grandmother passed away and I went to her funeral, she would not let me submit the homework when I returned. I would not take her course ever again, she didn't earn my respect, but she expected mine.
She seems really nice out first--until she singles out students to make passive aggressive comments. Complete control freak with NO patience. Worst math teacher ever it is painfully obvious she does not teach elementary school anymore because the kids did not like her/ she got fired.
She is definetely a good, easy teacher and the math is tricky but can be acheivied by anyone. She's sweet and nice IF you never talk, and walk on eggshells around her. Attendence is mandatory because of points every class and we cover a lot. Would take her class again, but don't piss her off.
Loved the class. She is extremely helpful. Throughout the course I had various problems come up with the class and she always answered quickly and effectivly. I loved the detail she put into the class. Would be nice if she was still teaching in an elementary school but she still does great. She is strict on homework, but if you do it you will pass.
The Class Is Good And I Did Well In It (Grade A) But, I Would Not Take It With This Professor Again. While Her Teaching Methods Where Good Her Attitude Was Not Worth It. If You Do Take A Class With Her Just Make Sure You Are Always Very Polite And You Will Be Fine. I Really Don't Think She Means To Be Rude, It Is Up To The Students To Rise Above.
Schlenker was a great prof in my opinion. She explained everything very thoroughly and answered any questions I had. If you go to class, pay attention, and put forth the effort then there is no reason to get anything lower than an A/B.
She is a great teacher. She is clear, and does not over load students with homework or assignments. Her tests are clear and don't try to trick you.
Ms. Schlenker is great! Tests are challenging but not impossible. If you attend class and study your notes and the book you'll do fine. She's very helpful and is pretty engaging when it comes to lectures. Sometimes moody but stay on her good side!
I would say "She is best ever"
I would definetely reccomend taking her for this course. She makes it easy, fun, and if you study (only a little) you'll do gr8. I hate math and I ended up enjoying the class. If you always pay attention in class(not hard to do) you'll get an A or B. Only bad thing, she can be sassy so don't do anything you aren't supposed to in class.Great teacher
She is vey skilled in her field but needs work on her people person skills. Sometimes when you ask her for help she just walks away from you, and can tend to be very snotty. But overall her teachings were clear and i walked away feeling like i learned something.
Mrs. Schlenker is very good in mathematics and at teaching it. Having her for math for elem. teachers was a very fun experience. She does tend to be a little rude sometimes but sometimes she expects us to know everything and figure everything out ourselves. As a teacher though, she is great! Attendance is IMPORTANT!!
She is a good professor. She is clear, and fair. She gives you help when you ask for it. Make sure you go to class, do your work, and ask questions. She does not use a textbook in the course, it is a large PDF file of printed materials. So find a printer and print it out because it is cheaper than a book. thumbs up!
At first you think she will be the best teacher ever but then she's turns on you. There is no point in taking this class in person she doesn't teacher you anything a video is more helpful the she is. Her attitude is questionable through out the semester also almost like she thinks lesser of you.
Prof Schlenker was awesome. I don't know why she has poor ratings. Her poor attitude only came out when she would be asked the same question over and over after announcing the answer. The credit goes to her for dealing with her students. She was VERY helpful and replied to emails instantly. Pay attention, go to class, do you work, ask for any help.
Wow! She is an amazing instructor! She is super helpful and always there when I needed help. Now she does make yo print out the "book" online, which I think is great because sometimes she will tell you the answer's on MyMathLab to one's that are difficult. As well I would suggest to print each page of the book that way you have more space.
LOVED her, she was really clear and concise with how she taught each lesson and was very easy to understand. Homework was VERY easy, it's the tests that get you to really study for, but she provides really good study guides to help. There is a final project but was actually really fun to make! Overall I would recommend her!
She can be a bit snippy with students, but overall if you're a good student she's nice. The class could probably be online because we basically teach ourself, but that's the same with all 142 classes, doesn't matter who the prof is. Homework is easy points and if you can do the review then the test should be easy too.
She treats you as if you are an 8 year old who needs to be scolded on everything you do. If you are even 2 mins late to class she'll yell at you. Her homework is tedious, & her tests are very hard. You basically have to teach yourself the course because her lectures are no help. So please, if you want to pass math, DO NOT take her class. :)
She is the worst teacher I have ever had in all my years in school. She panics about everything and she worries about things that students are doing wrong half way through lecture and make herself look dumb. She never lets you speak or ask your question before she answers and always seems to get mad when things are not done her way. WORST TEACHER.
If you do all your work early, you won't have to go to class anymore so that's great. WILL give you an E if you miss two weeks worth of class. Very picky about how things are done, but if you do things her way, she's pretty cool. Also very good at explaining math and helping you until you 100% got it. Would take another math course w/ her if needed
Probably the worst teacher I've ever had and most unorganized class. Lectures are 2 topics ahead of the actual homework you're supposed to be working on. Ask her for help and she tells you to watch the instructional videos. Not a good teacher. But I passed with a B
She was such a great professor for me. I passed the class with a B, but that was because I missed a couple of classes due to being sick. If you don't miss any classes it is hard not to get an A in that class. She is very clear on what she is teaching and you do a lot of group work. Which helps a lot! (: I loved taking her class! Best math teacher!
If you manage your time you'll finish the course early- I finished in 2 months. Exams can be hard- do the review. The professor can seem rude and impersonal, but in a huge class with a ton of disrespectful students, I tried not to take it personally. No cell phones, only 3 absences allowed, do well on the in class work for easy points.
The only problem was she didn't like to be asked questions
She has her days where she can be so nice and days where she overreacts with EVERYTHING. Messes up when she does her lessons a lot. When going around the room, she touches people's belongings when they are in the restroom. Doesn't like to be asked questions- leaves it to her TAs.
This class was really easy if you remember anything from middle school, but Beth does a great job teaching strategies for teaching the concepts! The homework is all on MyMathLab so you do need the code, and participation is important because there are quizzes every class after the unit, but you can work together so they are super chill. She's great
Such an amazing and terrific professor. As a student who uses disability resources, she is very understanding and helpful to all. As long as you communicate with her and work the best you can, she will work with you. Took 2 math courses with her (this & MAT110) and if I had to take another for my major, she would be the professor I'd pick.
Kiss your social life goodbye because this class is quite demanding. There are 22 lengthy homework assignments, 8 written word problems, and 5 exams due. Don't bother asking the professor for assistance. In my experience she answers every question with a question. Utilize the other resources available to you and you'll pass this course.
Um, taking this class online and horrible at math? AVOID!!! Teacher doesn't work with you half the time, and responds late to questions. There are not much available resources. Don't take. Maybe she's better in person, but online HORRIBLE!
This was not an easy class, requires a lot of self discipline and learning on your part. Teacher was decent though. Sometimes they don't properly read your questions though when your'e stuck and it shows because their responses to you will make no sense. Be patient too, cause sometimes it takes them 2 days to respond to you. Not a bad class.
This is a pretty easy class and she is a great professor. Her tests are a little more difficult but if you study you should be fine. HW is all on MyMathLab and its usually 1-3 units due once a week. Attendance is mandatory since she gives short quizzes at the end. Really enjoyed taking MTE280 with her and plan on taking MTE281 with her as well!
Easiest class I ever took in college. I finished this class in 4 weeks, and didn't have to attend the rest once I was done. She lets you take the tests early if you finish your homework, you just need to sign up. There are 5 exams, and 1 homework per lesson sections (easy to finish). Practice test is like the test.
Just uses recycled material that is not aligned to her homework questions or tests.
4 to 5 online assignments per unit, 4 to 5 homework assignments per unit, 1 quiz per unit. Her schedule is laid out clearly, stay on top of the schedule of assignments and you should pass. All I did was watch the lectures to understand all the math concepts presented. Lectures are good!
I rarely used the text book for this class. The lectures that were available went along with the homework and was suffice for me. The homework kept me busy and on my toes but I was not drowning like other classes. Working full-time and being a mom and wife I was able to juggle this class.
Took online and not good at math to begin with so class wasnt the easiest. Unorganized, not all due dates match throughout course, so follow her word document schedule. Textbook not needed. DAILY weekday homework assignments due with additional written math problems due. Exams are video proctored.
MAT142 was suuuuper easy. You can work ahead so for my session C, I finished at the end of February and no longer had to go to classes. There are 5 units with about 4-5 homework assignments for each unit. Test each unit. Due dates are all laid out. She can be kinda moody and not much help. She is nice when she doesn't have to teach.
Worst teacher ever. Basically sets you up for failure. If you take this class don't get this professor! Trash
Pro's: * class opened early * clearly defined coursework and grading policy * easily accessible when issues arise * gives grading feedback * well planned syllabus and study materials Con's * Sessions A and B move quickly * Workload was hard to keep up with * Has exam questions that will trick the student * Touch grader on writing problems
This class is broken up into 5 units. Each unit has 1 exam and 4-5 homework assignments. Its easy to get ahead in this class and most people are finished before Thanksgiving. Do all the homework (unlimited chances to get problems right) and the exams will be easy.
This is actually the best math class I've taken. The way it's set up, you can finish the class whenever you want as long as you complete all the unit tests. In my class, we had students who were done with the class a week into the semester. I was able to finish it about a month early. Schlenker is pretty dope too and definitely knows her stuff.
Took MTE 280 and MTE 281 with professor Schlenker and I would highly recommend her! She goes out of her way to help her students succeed.
The class was overall easy. The whole course was online and the explanations were really helpful. There was no need for a teacher because she didn't do anything. When I would ask her for help she either did not know the right answer or would tell me the wrong way to do it. No extra credit and no final and she made it so we can't finish early.
Okay so this was supposed to be an in person class but everything was online. You literally showed up and worked on a computer. This teacher didnt give one lecture the whole semester. How are we supposed to do the material of you dont explain it to us? If I wanted online math I would have signed up for that.
This is the only course I've ever taken where the methods of testing and completing homework were more difficult than the actual subject matter. Several students sent complaints regarding difficulty accessing exams, which the instructor responded to apathetically. Unnecessarily difficult and unhelpful overall.
I was scared to death of this course, it had been 20+ years since Id taken math. The course is structured excellent, using notes during the lectures is key, and the program used to do the assignments is fantastic and easy to use. Schlenker herself was very encouraging and quick to give feedback and grades. Among the best professors Ive had.
I hate math, I really hate math, but if I had to take another math class I would hope to be able to take it with this professor. Gave good feedback, was always really helpful, and lets you work ahead.
I learned a lot. The last time I took a math class was 15+ years. She replies quickly, quicker than any professor I've had thus far. She's fair and cares about her student. DO THE PRACTICE TEST. It WILL help you for the test. Watch the videos! Do you want to minimize your workload? Do well on the ALEKS assessment. Great teacher!
We are military so we had to move and I couldn't take this course in person. Anyways I struggled as I took this online course, made it to the end with 69%. I asked her for extra credit, didn't allow it. I was super bummed. I just feel like she doesn't cooperate with the students. If your not good at math AVOID ONLINE!!!!
This professor refused to teach the course. What she does is everyone is expected to do everything on the computer and if you have questions dont ask her she doesnt help you. There are only 3-4 TAs in a class of 100+ students so you have to wait a very long time for help. You arent going to get a single lecture if you take her. Dont do it.
This was an incredibly easy class. I am an English major and have always hated math, but Beth is an amazing lecturer. She makes everything so easy to understand! My one tip is to really try your hardest on the ALEKS assessment. You can knock a lot of lessons out of the way and minimize your workload.
MTE281 was the hardest class I have had to take because of this teacher. The class itself is not hard but Beth makes it impossible. She does not understand what she talking about and makes us as students feel stupid when we don't understand her. I do not recommend taking her as a teacher if you are in MLFTC. She is the worst teacher I've ever had.
Beth was great. The class has video lectures detailing the subject matter each week. These video lectures correspond with the ALEKS homework. There is an initial assessment to start the class. Although this isn't graded, it's vital. The better you do on this, the less homework you'll have. Please do your best on this assessment. Tests R chill
This class was extremely disorganized and Schlenker never seemed prepared for her lessons. If you need help from her, she is sarcastic and makes you not want to ask questions. Her teaching did not serve the course purpose and was taught horribly in my opinion. Not MLFTC quality and I would avoid at all costs.
I can understand why some people dislike her as a professor, she is sarcastic and can definitely make you feel a bit "dumb". I went to her office hours and there were times where I even questioned my ability to do math, but in the end she helped me a lot. She definitely acknowledges who puts in the effort and who doesn't.
I am so upset that I even tried taking this class. Started online just one day late and already lost out on points for not "attending" I even got a snarky email from her stating I was falling behind already. This class is ALEKS based so your trying to teach yourself and have to do 70 topics (each about 5 problems) per week. I ended up dropping.
I literally lost points for using a slashed zero because that "means empty set" in a problem that didn't involve sets at all. Her grading on explanations in her problem sets seems pretty subjective. At least participation points are easy. So glad I tested out of 80% of this class based on the ALEKS assessment and finished by week 4.
Basically the worst. The highlight of this course is that there is minimal contact with the professor. The only thing she grades are the worksheets, everything else is through ALEKS.
I took this class online, she is very strict I forgot to turn in a problem sheet and she doesn't let you make it up which I thought was too harsh in an online class (in general ASU is inflexible with online courses) If you aren't keen on math I wouldn't take this class online. I learn well by myself so while I struggled in some areas I made out ok
Do not recommend this instructor. She overcomplicates assignments and is not clear on how to access materials or assignments. These aspects of her teaching methods set students up to fail. Nearly all communications from her were full of sarcastic, snide remarks. She is difficult to reach for help for anyone working a full time job.
Worst professor I've ever had. If you like paying 2k for a class only to have the instructor insult you and avoid any questions you have, you'll LOVE this class. Got accused of violating conduct for asking a question and no-I'm not exaggerating. She will only tell you to read syllabus instead of answering questions. Glorified ALEKS babysitter.
Im shocked at a lot of these reviews! I got a C or D in every math class in HS and then took a 10 year break from school. With Schlenkers help I got an A in her class. She will answer every single question you have in the zoom meetings and go over things multiple times if it didnt click the first time, no matter how long it takes you.
The worst professor I've had within the teaching college. She doesn't know how to work technology and gets annoyed at the students for not understanding what's going on. It's truly aggravating to sit through a zoom class, and she seems annoyed at her students for not being able to deal with her lack of effort.
The exam questions are difficult.
This class will make you want to drop out because she is so inept at being a positive TEACHER. She makes you fell stupid and easily annoyed when questions are asked. Please someone that can make hiring decisions read this and reevaluate her employment, she is not fit to motivate students or teach.
She is the worst teacher I've ever had. Despite the majority of the class saying they do not understand she continues to move on to the next lesson. She makes mistakes that confuse everyone alot. I understand that technology is difficult for some but it seems like she's never used a computer ever. She is rude and sarcastic and is of little help.
Its evident that Beth doesnt care about students at an individual level. She doesnt know how to run an efficient class and the group work is tedious. Not clear in giving directions either. Would waste time to call out students who didnt have their camera on over zoom. Sit down Beth, its a 100 level class and we can get an A w/o a camera on
A classmate from another class told me to double check my test scores because this professor is notorious for marking right answers wrong, after I told my current classmates about that "magically" we can no longer access tests to see how we did. I asked her a question and instead of answering she told me to dig through announcements for my answer.
100% worst professor I've ever had. She is clueless all the time &.calls out & offends her students for asking for help. Cares so obnoxiously much about whether students have their cameras on during Zoom. Im not kidding, take a shot every time she says cameras must be on & you'll be blacked out by the end of class. Just teach the class Beth.
I cant count how many times students were called out for no reason. Many of us received condescending private messages on Zoom and/ or were put down in front of the entire class. She embarrassed a lot of us and used scare tactics to get her way. She also treated us as if we were literally children. Her attitude is awful and she didnt really teach
Teaching and learning online is difficult, but Beth Schlenker really took it to the next level. I gave her the benefit of doubt first couple weeks in, but her mistakes were consistent the entire semester. It was to the point where many of my classmates began learning on our own, because all Schlenker could worry about were if your camera was on.
god i HATE this professor. the course material was ridiculously easy, but she managed to make even the most self-explanatory content difficult simply because of the idiotic way she made us submit assignments. please, please, PLEASE do not take a class with this prof, she will make you want to put your head through a wall.
Worst teacher I have come across at ASU. She made one of my peers cry today and individually called out students, talking to them as if they were children. This was over assignments being submitted incorrectly (the professors fault) and she approached the situation unprofessionally and rude. Not to mention she literally doesn't know math lol
Often took disrespectful tone with students, talked down to us like she was talking to elementary schoolers. Did not actually teach any of the class material herself, it was all in videos from someone else, but class sessions over Zoom were still mandatory. 1 session a week we had to do homework while she watched us on camera. Very uncomfortable.
I don't know if all the MAT142 classes are like this, but this class is horrible. She seemed nice but in every way this Zoom class could go wrong, it does just that and more. Everyone is always confused and the format of teaching is very unnecessarily complicated. You may be better off taking 142 when it's not on Zoom. Bless the IA's though.
Although theres a lot of busy work, the course content could almost entirely be done by a middle schooler. There are 5 proctored exams which can be a lot in an A/B session, but theyre short and simple. Schlenker was super kind & accommodating, and her office hours were convenient and helpful. Work hard on the IKC so you have less work overall.
Going into this class I was majorly dreading it but it turned out to be pretty easy! The material is not hard it is just time-consuming. Make sure you have the time to put into this class before taking it. Overall, Prof Schlenker is great!
Beth is the absolute WORST teacher I have ever had. The course should have been simple and easy, but Beths honest stupidity made it impossible. She refuses to answer questions, all of her assignments have errors, and overall makes no sense. The more time I spend in class, the less I understood the content. Do yourself a favor and do not take her.
Professor Schlenker does not come to class prepared. There are many times we had to correct her mistakes and it took her a bit to understand what was wrong. She accused half of the class for not doing their homework, even though everyone completed it and she had mistakingly made 2 submission links. I felt I would be ridiculed for asking questions.
Prof Schlenker's class was a basic easy math class and she was an okay instructor. She just wasn't super duper nice and would get short with students when they would ask obvious questions. She seemed kind of annoyed with us and was super strict, even when expectations weren't clear.
MAT 142 requires A LOT of work, but it's laid out well and easy to understand/follow. Math has never been easy for me but this course was easy to understand, and I applaud everyone who has helped developed and facilitated it. Beth Schlenker is very nice and very helpful. Attend her live exam reviews! She will spend hours on the calls to help you.
Shes definitely not the best, but probably not the worst. The class content itself was very easy, but Mrs. Schlenker wasnt always the absolute best to work with. I didnt attend her exam review sessions so maybe she was nicer in those calls, but she was definitely not the nicest in class.
This professor is one of the coldest, and least inviting professors I have EVER had. Vague, almost condescending feedback on assignments. Is not willing to work with you IN THE SLIGHTEST, even for things that are out of your control. The Canvas layout for the class is confusing and her requirements to submit written problems are ridiculous.
It's only my 3rd day of class, and this teacher is the absolute worst. The format is unnecessarily difficult to navigate. She's rude, not at all helpful, and doesn't care about her students. She expects you to eat, sleep, and breathe math(that's now much homework there is). Do NOT take this teacher. If I could give her lower than one, I would.
For a 100 series class, it's insane. I don't know that I've ever worked this hard for a good grade on a 100 series class. If you understand canvas and can look at deadlines, you'll be fine, provided you can understand the concepts in time. There are forums where you can ask for help. Professor Schlenker is extremely busy, but nice enough.
So disrespectful and disorganized. Many links were broken so I couldn't access a lot of things. I told her about it and instead of working to try to fix it, she told me to call tech support. They were busy so I asked her to email me the homework and she didn't even respond to my email. Do NOT take her. 10/10 would not recommend.
The concepts aren't hard -but the ALEKS system overcomplicates the way concepts are taught which does not make this class easier. It makes it unnecessarily difficult. I have spent 3 days on the homework average in this class in the last 2 weeks. Really upsetting because I will never use this math in real-life scenarios. This class is a joke
Assignments become unlocked the day they are due! DO NOT TAKE. Still in class, hw due every night. taking this class solo, content ok but written assignments on ALEKS unlocked the day they are due. Recommend only if you are a full time student, good luck if you have work and family life too.
THIS IS THE WORST CLASS I'VE EVER TAKEN. The layout is confusing and difficult to navigate enough as is (double triple check that you submitted something) and then she requires a ridiculous written assignment that is worth a giant chunk of your grade. Math is hard enough for a lot of people- why does she need make it more difficult?
Beth is very sweet and funny. Shes incredibly helpful and doesnt mind going over problem with students. She will make references to remember stuff with math and her dog will come on zoom for reviews. Love the zoom reviews because Beth is very helpful and funny during the calls. I would take her again but I dont like math.
This teacher overall is nice, she does not teach any of the content, you have to read and watch the videos on canvas, watching the videos is easier (no need to read the book), she helps when you need help, answers emails within 48 hours since sent, She does not offer any extra credit If you took precalculus in High school this class is an easy A
This teacher does not want to help students via email & does not even teach the class herself. She relies on ALEKS to teach & her organizational skills are poor. I spent 2+ hours per day on homework most days. I missed one assignment on ALEKS, scored a B average on tests, and did all other hwk/extra credit & barely scraped by with an A. 0/10
Professor is fine; helps when asked. I am terrified of math and not very good at it, but this class is actually pretty easy. Don't sweat it - if you watch the lectures and take it seriously it's not hard at all. Peer reviews are a waste of time because half the class has no clue what they're doing.
Professor Schlenker does not care about her students or respect us at all. Rather than helping you with homework, she stares you down, and there's an awkward tension. She gives you a lot of reading on ALEKS lot of parts to each question. She is a fast-paced teacher who goes over each lesson quickly, rushing you to take a quiz, learning nothing.
Lots of homework (like an assignment a day on average) but really easy to understand after watching the lectures.
She is nice, she helps when you need it, be nice to her and she will be nice to you, the class overall was very easy, just need to watch the lectures, do the assignments and yu are set to get a good grade on the exams. do not worry, each exam is very easy and is mostly what you learned, I recommend doing the exam review, it is practically the exam.
I did well in the class but there was definitely some frustration. There are things due every day which is frustrating when you're working/have other classes. I wish it was based on a weekly due date schedule like most other classes. I did like how I could retry things in ALEKS as many times as you wanted to understand. Be prepared for LOTS of work
A nice professor and I recommend taking MAT142 from her! I haven't taken math in years but the work is pretty straightforward. It's very overwhelming at the beginning with the coursework but it does get easier over the term. I've HATED math but she made me actually enjoy it at the end. I remained an A the whole term.
I repeat do not take MAT 142 with her because she has multiple assignments due everyday and can not teach, when you are stuck you basically have to figure it out by yourself. ALEKS software was hard to learn, if you do not pass subject you have to keep taking it over until you pass it. She makes you record while taking tests. Overall awful class.
I havent been the best with math but I struggled so much in this class. I felt like no matter what I did I could not get my grade up and I felt as if the teacher did not seem to care, I asked to retake many assignments due to medical emergencies and I was responded with the bare minimum. I was only able to retake 2 things in the emails I sent.
This was pretty much just an online class that we taught ourselves in a classroom. Schlenker wasn't awful, but it was difficult to get help sometimes. There were things due almost every day and no way to submit late work. The tests were super easy. We'd get counted absent if we left class early, and you only get 4 absences.
Don't do it. Schlenker is so rude and gets angry when the class doesn't understand the material she can't teach. She should not be a professor.
Professor Schlenker is an awesome professor. I despise Math but she actually made it fun. There's a lot of homework but if you watch the lectures, do the homework and reviews you'll ace every test. She responded to questions and emails right away and you can talk to other students and get help via InScribe. Overall, it was a great class.
This class is a waste of time and money. I have special needs and trouble understanding math. In this course you show up and she refuses to teach or answer questions on the problems simply referring you to online lectures which offer minimal info. Better to save money and take 142 at a community college. Schlenker doesn't care about her students.
Self-reliant and fast-paced course, you have to stay on top of your assignments (and lectures are long)! I am absolutely not strong in math, but even I finished with an A. **Pro tip** visit the study hall channel frequently to answer questions and get help/clarification from your peers.
Extremely unhelpful. Most of us in the class could not figure out the HonorLock program and were posting about it on the community forum and her response was just to copy and paste the instructions we all already had. Workload for this class was way too high and she won't help you when you don't understand, she leaves passive aggressive comments.
She Accidentally didn't put 2 of my assignments that I got 100% on in the grade book. I told her this, and she refused to give me credit for them because I didn't keep one of the papers even though it was her mistake not grading them. I lost points even though I did the work. She's also just mean and yells a lot and tried to take someones phone.
This professor is not willing to work with students at all. If you miss something you get a 0 end of story. You have to check in and out every day or you'll get a 0- even if you turned the assignment in that day. She entered my grades wrong multiple times and will not tell you why you got a 0 on something unless you track her down. Don't recommend.
Dont take this class unless you want to be doing hours of work on "Aleks". Had to teach myself everything in this class. Teacher doesn't help at all and is rude. She very strict with assignments and heavy work load. Aleks is the worst software for learning ever. The only reason I got through the class is because of the IA's who were there to help.
one of the worst teachers ever. made class mandatory on election day- almost every other teacher emphasized the importance of voting, so to let them know if you needed some time off to go vote. Not beth, her class according to her is the only important thing on earth. she WILL yell at you in the middle of everyone, and no she does not care abt you
She's honestly not that bad. Basically, you have notes due before every class, and during class, she reviews the lessons and we do practice work with manipulatives and our group tables. There were 3 unit tests and a final project. And daily quizzes are worth 5 points but you can miss a few and still pass.
If you take the hybrid version of this class and you get your work done on time, Thursday lectures are optional which is nice. however, beth was very unhelpful when I would email her with questions. If you have questions go to the IA's. Overall easy A for me.
Generally, her class is pretty easy and if you end up in her earlier classes she's pretty nice. If you get all your work done by Wednesday she lets you skip Thursday classes which is nice. There is also no final exam just the last unit test for this class. Its just a lot of work honestly and Aleks is so annoying
The whole class was online Aleks is horrible. She would allow you to skip the days you are not doing group problems if you are ahead. She really doesn't teach the class at all. There are probably worst teachers out there so I don't think she would be a bad choice.
Math at ASU is a very teach-yourself course; however, Ms.Schlenker would offer lectures for those who needed them. She often would reward hard work with days off.
Lots of homework and the class is a little messy in the way its organized.
In a class that does not require much teaching or effort from the professor personally, she still finds ways to be completely incompetent and unhelpful in every category. She has an extreme lack of empathy towards student situations, I would not recommend taking her class if you want a professor who is in anyway going to care about your success.
I've never had a Professor personally email me before to send an encouraging message. I despise math and Prof Schlenker made this course surprisingly enjoyable. Best grade in a math class I've ever gotten! Thank you Prof Schlenker!!!
She is by far one of the worst professors I have ever had. She will email you constantly and is extremely passive aggressive. I ended up dropping the class because she was so terrible. 142 is a very common class so please do yourself a favor and find someone else. DO NOT TAKE HER
Did not help me with assignments and not understanding.
Teaches what is essentially an online class, adds busy work, and requires in-person attendance both at the beginning and end of class. The Math itself is pretty easy, she just makes sure you do 10 hours worth every week She's not compassionate or understanding towards her students at all and treats everyone like a paycheck. AVOID if possible.
Extremely passive-aggressive and unkind. She had all 130 students swipe in AND out for attendance in every single class. It was basically online with too much busy work. If you can slide under the radar and don't mind doing reviews every day, you could survive, but even after getting an A, I hated that class.
Only take this class if you have to. It felt like a waste of time. The content is extremely easy and mainly busy work. It was nice to be able to get excused from some classes by working ahead, but the class is stupidly through an online program yet meets in person, and attendance is required. Professor Schlenker is also passive aggressive.
Everything was on ALEKS, the set up was a bit infuriating. If you're not good at math you'll go back and forth trying to complete assignments because if you missed one, it backtracked until you got one correct. There were 5 Exams, all used Honorlock- which is just a platform used to record you while you take said exams.
Just not a good teacher all around
This entire class was on ALEKS, if you don't know how to teach yourself material I suggest finding a different class. There's no lectures, the TAs are the only ones helping, attendance is mandatory, and there's a ton of tests.Take the course completely online if you can. There is ZERO point to be in person. She clearly has some control issues.
She won't teach you any mathematics but she will teach you how to become hated by everyone you know
DOES. NOT. TEACH. Every single person in this class complains about her. She makes snarky comments, doesn't teach, and doesn't even grade. The TA's basically do her job for her in class, she doesn't even grade. If you are not willing to spend hours studying and teach yourself the work through ALEKS... it is not worth it to take this teacher!
The struggle was real with this class. The whole class is on ALEKS and you teach yourself the material. The TA's are the only ones who will help you in class. It was nice to excused from class if you worked ahead. Avoid taking her class.
The class is easy enough, it is honestly an online class with human oversight. You can ask her or her IA's for help, but she does little to no teaching herself. Can be strict about phones, and can be moody, but overall it is an easy class
Class was so big that we didn't even lecture. Most of work done online, but you still have to come in for attendance. Very organized professor. You know what is expected of you from the beginning. Opportunities to miss class or leave early if all your work is done. TA's were very helpful.
Messy class, many errors noticed. Written problems are not clear, two had errors. TA's do the grading and are not consistent. Professor is kind, but I think overstretched with # of students.Honorlock/Aleks integration is a disaster. Appreciate the study halls/lectures/Inscribe access. Lots of work, but overall a good math class, just bumpy.
This teacher gives busy work and keeps the course very participation heavy, but doesn't teach at all. Doesn't allow any late assignments ever and offers no help. She gives a million assignments and a lot of it is busy work, not even going towards the grade. Do NOT recommend this professor at all, take math with anyone but her.
She was rude. Definitely will not recommend it.
She doesnt actually teach 142, its all online so only take her if youre good at math but if youll ever need help you should pick someone else. She was very rude to students and strict about phones and talking. She once told me to stop working ahead but later praised those of us who worked ahead. The content is not difficult, but she is.
Yes the class is boring but she is great. All you have to do is doing your homeworks and try to get 100 and you will be fine. I did awful in 3 exams and I though that I'm gonna fail this class, but the homeworks you complaining about, gonna save you.
I probably am the worst person in the world at math. If you work hard with Professor Schlenker in order to better understand math, you will leave with a more knowledgeable approach towards math, with a new perspective. Thank you professor!
Most of this class is through recorded lectures by other professors, the only time you're being taught by her is the optional pre-exam zooms. The class is broken down so even if you're not great at math you can find a way you can learn. The only thing I'll say is she does not take late work, ensure you're staying on top of checking in every day.
This class can be challenging, but with hard work and using helpful tools like Unstuckstudy, you can succeed. The professor has high expectations, but the content is manageable if you stay on top of it.
Honestly this class is pretty easy if you're decent at math. If you can get ahead on all of the homework, you'll be golden. Although, she doesn't teach anything really you mostly have to figure out stuff yourself.
Professor is always agressive in person. she did not explain anything. because the videos of explanation is given online. One thing i liked about the class was how the class was Tuesdays group work and Thursdays are off if you complete the work given early. loads and loads of work. the math was easy but it requires studying and work.
Contrary to the low ratings, I loved her and this class. She wants students to figure out the problems by themselves, which isn't crazy to ask of students in a math class... She would be really helpful when asked questions, as long as you have tried and put forth effort. Do the assignments online; this class is a breeze. TAs are super helpful.
For a math class, my one criticism is that there are no lectures. But in my personal opinion, this is a good thing. All of the work, tests, and assignments are through Aleks. The only in-person assignments are the group assignments, which you have once per week. You can even miss class if you complete assignments ahead of time!
I don't think that she's a bad teacher, but the way the class is structured is awful. I don't even know if she is a good or bad teacher because she never really teaches. Her TA's do all the work and you have to teach yourself at home. Personally, I didn't think that it was that bad but some people really struggled with this system.
I had a hard time getting the help I needed in this class. Whenever I made mistakes, it felt like the instructor was distant and not very encouraging, which made it tough to ask for help. It would be really helpful if there was more support and a more positive attitude towards students, especially when they're struggling. Not approachable at all!
Might as well be an online course, instructor not involved AT ALL, TA's are life savers in this class. They do her job for her.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF. She is the worst prof. I've ever had. She does not teach ANYTHING, if you need help look online or ask a TA, she will not help.If you fall behind even because of a legitimate reason, she doesn't care there really is no catching back up with her.She doesn't do anything besides talk to your class for 2 minuets at the beginning.
Beth. Beth does not care about her students whatsoever. I would not reccomend this prof if you are looking to connect with your prof. If you want incredible TA's, take this class. The class is basically all online. She will tell you the wrong answer and wrong way of doing things. I think she knows less about math than the average first year.
Do NOT take this professor. Change immediately. Class is fully online, class time is used to complete online work. TA's are wonderful people, the professor refuses to help whatsoever and is very condescending and passive-aggressive.
Professor is chill! Class is basically online but if I ever needed help I would get help from either her or the TA's. As long as you do the work and study you'll be fine! There's no lectures really and be prepared to not have your phone out or talk to friends. If you do ur work you can leave early or not even have to go sometimes which was nice!
Everyone saying this was basically an online class is correct. However, it really isn't that hard. I've always been terrible at math but working in groups & her review videos are super helpful. Just take advantage of the resources she provides and you'll be golden. She's actually kinda nice, she just doesn't talk much unless you talk to her first.
Prof. Schlenker has got to be the WORST professor I have ever had. Doesn't teach and doesn't know the material herself. Be prepared to ONLY watch videos. So strict about attendance but very unclear about the attendance policy. Be prepared to not schedule anything that might conflict with class because she will make you cancel it.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. Does not bother to teach her own material and has no idea how to help students when asked for help. Her TAs do all of the teaching and working with the class. Strict on attendance, checks you in and out of class. Also very rude when emailed and approached in person. Take any other professor!
Terrible with instructions and sugar coats everything. Not helpful whatsoever
Best math website I've ever used, I actually learned concepts that usually slip by my head. The professor herself is nice, I honestly think people were to hard on her. She helped when she could (there are around 100 of us) and was never rude like people claimed. Nice lady and was very organized. Moderate workload every week.
I'm not sure why she has bad ratings because she made it easy to learn the material. The videos are helpful and the homework shows you how to work your problems if you get it wrong with unlimited attempts. She went out her way to tell me how great I was doing and gave me a warning instead of failing me when I accidentally violated a proctored exam.
This was my least favorite class I have ever taken here. The Professor doesn't understand the material your learning so hope you get a good IA. Tests are timed and pretty hard. She has group work but doesn't like when you talk to the people in your group. Overall not understanding of what shes teaching. She is sweet but not for this class.
The online class was well organized and you can only pass if you get the work done. There is homework due every weekday, but can be completed ahead of time. Ed discussions were helpful where you can post questions and other students and instructor can help you. She gives extra credit and email reminders about assignments due were nice.
This professor creates an unwelcoming environment. Questions are met with passive-aggression or blatant disrespect. This environment is not supportive, making it hard to ask for help. She has no issue lecturing students in front of the class; unprofessional and unnecessary. The environment is discouraging, and everyone I've talked to dreads class.
The prof is fine! Take her. You will live & breathe math though because of MAT142's set up but it isn't her fault. Even though homework burnt me out, it saved my grade so aim for 100%'s. I hate the exam set up. It is unfair to people who can do math but need more time. So glad to be done with this class! It is doable, just give it your all.
teaching style tailored for students with strong Math142 foundation. Does not accommodate diverse learning styles. volume of HW assigned excessive and focused on quantity vs conceptual understanding. students who struggle w/math or need addt'l support, I would not recommend her as the approach is not conducive to mastering material effectively.
Professor wrote questions incorrectly and still marked the class as incorrect. She was literally no help at all, would not elaborate on anything you asked her.. I regret signing up for her class profusely.
This is by far the worst professor I've had in my few years of college. She does not care to help, let alone she does not care to teach. She is a huge red flag as a professor, as well as a person. She will make sure that every single one of her students does not pass her class. I don't know how she still has a career. What an awful “teacher”.
She refuses to think that one of her students is successful in her class and automatically assumes that you're cheating. She has given numerous students in this class zeros because she assumes we are cheating on every single one of her exams. I am extremely disappointed. To have my hard work stripped away from me.
I would take another class with her
Great professor, I would take another class with her if I had to take another math class.
No exaggeration when I say you will spend at least 2 hours on each homework assignment, and there is an assignment due every weekday, so an assignment due mon, tues, wed, thurs, and friday. Sometimes there are even two assignments due on one day. Class is incredibly time consuming and exams are 50% of your grade. Would never recommend to anyone.
This class was way more difficult than it needed to be. The workload was excessive and overwhelming. When students asked for help on the Ed discussion boards, she was often dismissive and condescending, which made it harder to feel comfortable asking questions. Save yourself the time, do not take this class.
She is completely unreasonable and Her work load is unrealistic. She accuses many students of cheating and fails a handful, and this has been going on for years. I do not know how ASU continues to employ her. By far, worst course I have ever taken. I'd rather take a full year in person class than ever take this professor. Do not learn the hard way
i do not even know where to starts but i can tell this proffessor is either burnt out or just no longer cares for her proffession. Shes lazy and hates answering quenstions, when she does shes rude and doesn't answer them correctly.
Unnecessarily difficult, excess of homework, terrible at communicating. Practice exams are nothing like the actual exams.
This professor assigns an excessive amount of homework. In the first week of class, you'll feel overwhelmed and stressed. Every week you'll have two Edfinity assignments (an online math program you'll do HW), a lesson HW assignment from her that you must download and complete, separate practice and written problems, and an exam. FIND SOMEONE ELSE!
Professor was rude and condescending when students needed help, wasn't very good at explaining topics, and homework was usually long and tedious. Would definitely not recommend, most of the students in my section were stressed beyond belief by this class!
Super rude to students. You have to teach yourself the course basically. Lots of homework and not very understanding at all. Don't take this professor. Also literally not allowed to talk in class to other students despite the fact that she isn't even teaching we just have to figure it out on our own.
This professor exhibited the worst communication skills out of any professor I have had throughout my college experience. Being an online class, it was very technology dependent and nearly every single assignment had issues with links not working or answers being marked wrong when they were right. When the issues were brought up she lacked empathy.
It's not so much her; the class is just inherently flawed. It's all self-paced, and she doesn't actually lecture/teach. If you've done any algebra or stats, this class is super easy, but if you struggle and don't get it, she shows little empathy. I'd go to tutoring if it doesn't click right away. Very nice person, but the wrong prof for this class.
All you do is ALEKS topics so be ready to teach yourself every math lesson.
very obviously hates her students and will go directly to blaming them even when the issue is technical or on her end. Some homework assignments are ridiculously long based on workload and some tests are not properly timed with the amount of calculation and calculator work that is needed resulting in only getting through 3/4 of said test. Annoying
Does not teach at all, you have to learn everything yourself and the TA's guide you sometimes, group quiz type assignments every week and she doesn't even grade anything herself she makes the TA's do it, literally all she does for the course is unlock the homework assignments on ALEKS and send hoards of emails at 1 in the morning.
Math was my nemesis. I never liked math at all, and I avoided it the plague until I met Professor Schlenker, who took the time to help me all the way through. I honestly was stressed out over this class, but she kept encouraging me that "I Got This." She was very available on Zoom and was very helpful. "Take MAT 142. With her, you won't regret it.
The professor is very sweet, but you basically teach yourself everything in this class. The TAs were the most helpful in this class. If you aren't good at teaching yourself math, you may struggle in this class. You have the chance to do a quick re-take on the problems you get wrong on the test, so that's definitely helpful.
She literally didnt do anything, whole class is online basically and the TA's are very helpful but yeahs shes like useless but this class is hella easy.
Easy class. Professor was awesome and took the time out of her evenings every week before exams to answer questions. She made herself available on the discussion board and replied in a very quick manner. The only reason people are leaving bad reviews is because they are lazy and terrible at math.
