Make sure you read before coming to class- you will discuss the text most of the period. Very relaxed atmosphere where anyone can voice their opinion. Great teacher and good class if you dont mind reading 5-20 pages before each session.
I would agree with the first comment--you'll rarely get away with not doing the reading. I wasn't much into English before I took engl 101 with Stevens; now I tape research ideas to my door. >.>; Class discussions were both interesting and fun. Kind of a stickler for grammar. I would definitely recommend any of her classes.
Had THEEE BEST english class with Beth Stevens! Wonderful woman, and great teacher!
Excellent professor. Stickler for grammar. Fear the Monday quiz.
Great teacher! Challenges you to think and reinforces that there are no wrong answers as long as you can support them. Do the required reading and participate in class and you'll do just fine.
Beth is amazinggg! Her passion for English is incredible. The way she can get swept up in the literature/music/art is inspiring. She's the sweetest, and she will help you out at any time. She's very understanding and kind. She's just a great teacher.
She is a fair grader and provides great feedback. Her expectations for students are high but difficult to meet. I highly recommend her classes.
Awful. Stay far away
Horrible. Avoid at all costs.
She is very caring. She comes off tough but she has a big heart to those who try and she see's that in people. I enjoy her lectures, she is very passionate and caring. The work is not hard, the problem is people are lazy. What do people expect? 1 essay and call it good? It's college! Grow up people.
Ms. Stevens is the BEST! I would highly recommend her class to anyone..Work is fun, topics are great, and she makes English INTERESTING! She has a great attitude and cares deeply for her students. She's the best English prof I have ever had....
Ausome teacher!! explains well, helps well, enjoys her job and studnets learn in her class. I would suggest to anyone to take her class!
Downright cruel when answering emails asking for clarification about her disorganized, sloppy directions. Sarcastic, hostile, and rude. The class is easy if you can decipher her messy assignments and syllabus, but unless you write poorly, agree with her every word, and excel at sucking up, an A will be a struggle to attain.
She is an amazing teacher. She is very passionate about English, and it shows through her teaching. I highly recommend her.
She was a very kind teacher. She didn't force participation, though speaking up was super easy in her class. If you need clarification, just talking to her is super easy. You definitely have to read the books (it is a literature class, after all) but they are easy reads. She gives surprise quizzes every so often, so you must read. But she's great.
Simply fabulous.
Stevens is a great professor, very passionate about english and also slave history. She does assign tons of reading, but it is a literature class. I recommend not skipping since she does do pop quizes on readings. I really enjoyed class and all the discussion, learned a lot in this class! She made class very enjoyable!!
I absolutely LOVED this class! Professor Stevens has such a great passion for teaching. I learned more about the civil war and slavery than my history class. There is quite a bit of reading and you really do need to read ALL of it to participate in the class. There is he occasional quiz not difficult. This class was truly inspiring!
Beth Stevens deserves the teaching medal of honor. She is the ultimate English Professor, and those who would say otherwise simply do not understand her, or her quality.
Overall good teacher. Didn't reply to emails very quickly. Sometimes instructions were unclear. Interesting class though!
Too strict on guidelines, not lenient, not understanding at all!! Have fun
very vague and not helpful. She told me to download a writing program, which I did then she told me I couldnt use it because it wasnt in word???? She will also give you a length of an essay for example 2-3 pages. I wrote 2 3/4 of a paper and she docked me points for not meeting length reg. then why say 2-3.. shes useless... avoid her...
I took this course because I love reading and analyzing literature. Although the class isn't hard, I didn't enjoy the content. Sensuality is used excessively in the literature as well as in conversation. I strongly reccomend not to take the course if it is going to continue in this pattern. The teacher is not bad, just the content of the course.
Professor Stevens made the class interesting with her chosen topic. She's pretty quick at answering emails but very snippy and sometimes downright rude. Her syllabus and instructions can be confusing and when you try to get clarification from her, she's not very helpful. Overall, she's not horrible but wouldn't take her again.
Ms. Stevens is a brilliant person but I would not recomend her as a teacher.
I do not recommend taking her class. She grades incredibly hard, and she expects her students to write like they have a degree in writing... it is ENGL 103, we shouldn't be expected to know everything about writing. She is really interesting to listen to, but if you take her class be prepared to struggle, lose sleep, and have no life outside class.
There was quite a bit of work. Also, her assignments are not very clear whatsoever. I had to constantly ask for clarification and still didn't know what she wanted. The discussion posts are though provoking and you MUST do the reading. Overall not a bad experience but she is a hard grader. I am afraid to submit my final essay...
Had to take this course online during the summer. Beth was excellent at returning emails. I had lots of questions. I wish I could have taken this class on campus because there's so much writing and there isn't a chance to turn in a rough draft and see corrections. I got an A, but worked for it. Beth is passionate about teaching. Highly recommend!
While Professor Stevens is a hard teacher, she is very thorough, very dedicated, very passionate in her teaching. I learned more in the 8 weeks in her class than I thought I would. Yes, FANBOYS is stuck in my head, but so is using the ability to analyze a story, look deeper into the writing. I hope to be able to take other classes from her!
Beth Stevens is the epitome of what an English Professor should be.
Probably my favorite professor, very well organized, classes almost always interesting, and very easy to keep up. Sadly, didn't get to have her for the whole quarter and the substitute was terrible in comparison. Highly recommended teacher if you want to take a classroom set English class.
I would not recommend this professor for an online English 101 class. I feel that she expects students at my level to just know. Also I could never get a straight response to a question. Her feedback on graded assignments is greatly lacking. Good luck
I took Professor Stephens' English 101 course online. I was actually excited to take this class, given that English is my favorite subject, and I pride myself on my writing abilities. However, Professor Stephens thought otherwise. She tears every paper you write to pieces, giving generic, unfitting reasons why. I do not recommend taking her class.
Beth rules. When it comes to both the English language and American history (especially the civil rights movement)Beth Stevens is both informed and passionate. If you keep up with required classwork you will leave a more knowledgeable person and a more prepared student. I cannot recommend her enough as a professor, adviser, and person.
I took her hybrid class and I'm glad I did. You don't have to show up to the actual class unless you have questions. Her grading was a little hard and it was even harder because she left the class in the middle of the quarter leaving us to a new professor. She was fun and enthusiastic though and I wrote 3 essays.
Professor Stevens pretty quick at answering emails but very snarly and at times somewhat downright rude. Her syllabus and instructions were confusing and if you tried to get clarification from her, she was not very helpful. Her people skills left a lot to be desired. She was not horrible but given the choice I would not take her again.
Amazing teacher. She is passionate about what she teaches and motivated me in class because of it. She is kind, respectful, informative, funny, and just an all around cool teacher. She expects lots of hard work and effort, but it will only help you in much bigger ways. Also, we put all the books that were required in class to good use!
This class, American Popular Culture, is awesome! I really enjoyed taking it for a humanity credit. Also, the teacher is amazing! She is really passionate, makes class interesting and is not boring. Defiantly would recommend her and this class to anyone.
Beth has been my favorite instructor so far! She's funny, helpful, and extremely knowledgeable. I loved going to class because she would make it fun and engaging while also maintaining an academic environment. She really gets you thinking and likes class discussions. Very helpful when it comes to assignments - use her office hours! Take her class!
Beth is the best teacher I have had a Pierce. She just made class so much fun and I looked forward to getting up and going to school everyday except Friday. I learned a lot from her and she taught me a new way of thinking. I recommend her to everyone now. Oh and READ what she assigns, there will be quizzes.
Expect to be forced to talk in discussions She just randomly calls on people and has lots of pop quizzes it's really stressful But you can tell she truly loves her job and books which is nice
Your grade is the reflection of the effort that you put in it. She is very open to questions, but if you do not speak up then she will move on which is not her fault its mine. A great teacher that I wish was my advisor.
I took two back to back quarters with Beth and both quarters she was amazing. She helped me not only understand the material but helped me find a path as a student. She is corky and fun. She gives pop quizzes but if you do the previous reading the night before you're all set! This was the best class I have ever taken.
Beth is amazing!
Professor Stevens is an amazing professor in English 101. Although the directions for assignments are long, nothing is left to question. She is respectful of her students, and honest in her expectations. Be ready to study hard, read a lot, and go through a few highlighters. She is forgiving for the first week and then you must work hard.
Beth is both amazing at giving feedback and also just as amazing at communicating with her students. She cares about her subject that she teaches and that shows. Only critiques would be 1. assignment directions, though long in explanation, need to be more concise and often leads to some confusion 2) grading takes a bit of time.
She does expect a lot out of her students and sometimes there is a lot of reading for hw but it gave me experience to be able to handle whatever college may throw me. I think it is a testament of how AMAZING Beth is that I taken 4 consecutive classes with her and she is so passionate for what she teaches and you will love what you learn with her.
The work load for this class was ridiculous. You have homework every single night, some days it will take an hour, others four hours. She gives pop quizzes about once a week, so show up to class and do your homework. She expects a lot but is extremely sweet and you can tell she actually cares about her students. Take if you're up for a challenge.
This class was AMAZING. This isn't really a class where you can sit in the back the whole quarter and skate by. Daily homework but if you do the readings then you will be set for the quizzes, exams and essays they all stem off the homework. Actual College level work, Beth will help prepare you for what college at the Uni. level will truly be like.
I have never seen a teacher more passionate than she is about the well being of humans. I would LOVE to take an entire class with her about feminism and female rights. GO BETH!!!(: There is homework but the quizzes are common sense. No book!
Beth is rad. She is a fireball of passion and truly cares about the subjects she teaches. Do the reading (audiobooks are your friends) and be prepared to talk because she will make sure you talk. She has pop quizzes every once in a while but they're super short and easy if you do the reading. Please don't miss out on the gift of taking her classes.
She really assigns a TON of work for you to do and a whole lot of group work and pop quizs in class. She is also a really harsh grader. I dont like her at ALL
Beth was an amazing professor, but I do have one critique and that is that she is sometimes not clear on her assignments. You have to ask her lots of questions but she is very thoughtful and full of energy!
Great at motivating students and telling you what she wants before and after you submit an assignment. You will have hours of reading every week and a discussion forum that is due so expect more than 8 hours of homework every week for online, sometimes up to 14. Her projects are difficult but if you put in 100% you can do excellent.
This has been the worse teacher I have ever had in school. Avoid taking her at all cost.
If anyone complains about their grade, that is a reflection of their effort not her teaching style. She is a phenomenal teacher and chooses important and interesting topics. I wish she taught all of my classes. I will take her again every chance I get. If you don't enjoy reading or writing, you may not like her class, but you will learn!
TERRIBLE instructor for online format. TONS of work. She expects "deeply meaningful" writing for assgns & exams in little space. I have a heavy load of pre-nursing classes & thought this would be an interesting way to fill my Hum req. Instead I am hating her & this amt of work in this class is costing me in my other more important classes. Avoid!
I had the opportunity to take Humanities 109 with Beth this quarter and I have to say that this has been the most eye opening classes I have ever taken. The course content is incredible and Beth's teaching style makes it even better. Beth is by far my favorite professor at pierce. She is kind, clear, and you can tell she cared about your success.
Caring! Kind! Amazing Lectures! I loved taking her class! She was not only engaging and knowledgeable, but the material was extremely interesting. The work load was fair and manageable. If you needed help or were struggling she was ALWAYS eager to give you support. Beths genuine love of teaching is apparent inside and outside of the classroom! A++
This class on the Civil Rights Movement was very eye opening. I recommend this class to anyone interested in human rights. Two essay style exams, one essay mid term, final project can be another essay or artistic expression. Multiple documentaries and readings, weekly discussions, and extra credit. An A is very achievable just do the work!
Shes a tough grader. I didnt really enjoy having her as a teacher but she knew her stuff so Ill give her that. Tends to talk a bunch. Her instructions for assignments were often unclear. Even her feedback was unclear. Sometimes felt like she was too picky.
If you are expecting to have an A handed to you Beth is not the professor for you. For students that genuinely want to learn Beth will have your back every step of the way. The coursework is rigorous but certainly not unreasonable. Beth's feedback is amazing feedback, her enthusiasm is infectious, & her passion for teaching admirable. Recommended!
I am disappointed in how this professor "teaches" her students. I took this class online and it was the biggest mistake I have made. Her way of "teaching" is horrible/vague/confusing when you ask for help you will get the run around with response being "read the directions." She expects you to know as if you have a major in English. WARNING: AVOID!
Beth is great professor. Her passion for education is clearly shown. She assigns quite a lot of material but only if you read and analyze it will it hit home for you. Her lectures are enlightening. Rubrics are clear-cut and easy to follow. She responds to Canvas messages fast. She doesn't give up on her students. She sometimes gives pop quizzes.
She gives too much homework
Great professor, and very understanding as well. There is a bit of homework, plus a discussion board every week, but if you spend some time and not procrastinate, it's highly doable. Just one essay, and final is a project. Wasn't a hard class, and learned a great deal about the civil war movement.
BEST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD!!! She is so helpful and kind! She is a tough grader but she gives you all the tools to succeed and thrive in her class! It is hard work, but in the end its worth it because youll feel like youve accomplished something! Her feedback is informative and helpful, and shes always open to giving additional feedback!
Honestly such a quality teacher! She teaches in a way that involves the students and truly gets them to engage. She encourages people to voice their opinions, and always seriously considers them. Shes extremely reliable and helpful and is always open to giving you a nudge in the right direction if you ask for it!
Please select another professor if you can!
I took Pop culture online for a humanities course. I was expecting your typical online class but was pleasantly surprised by the course outline and teaching. It definitely wasn't an "easy" course but it was challenging and fun. Prof Stevens was very encouraging and gave me good feedback. if you are taking this class- plan to think outside the box
I've taken 3 classes with Beth. She is not "easy," but I have learned more from her than from other teachers. You'll read short stories and poetry and write an essay. Be thorough in your discussion posts-that's a big chunk of your grade and detailed in assignments. If you can't handle her, you'll struggle at the university level.
Professor Stevens has to be one of my favorite teachers thus far. I have taken 2 classes with her and genuinely, I can say I have learned more from these two classes than any others. Stay on top of your homework and you'll do great. The content is interesting and thorough. She treats this as a 200 level class, so should you.
I cannot be more disappointed in this class.
I love English so much but Beth Stevens ruined my self expression and is awful, please be attentive and listen to the advice on here. I wish I could go back because I am killing my GPA trying to tread water in her class. She is not organized, is super difficult person to get an answer from and does not help even if she says she wants to. CAUTION!!!
Disappointing class! Weekly discussions, posts must be long & must use a ton of content from readings. You have to respond to 5 or more posts or get points knocked off, she is a TOUGH grader. She assigns the Hamilton Sound Track/Mixtape weekly, final project based off listen to this. I hated it, not interesting. Quizzes a big part of your grade!
By far the Hardest class I have ever taken! She is a tough grader! She assigns weekly discussion boards which on their own, your posts are supposed to be top caliber if not, if not forget about getting an A. You have to reply to at least 5 other posts and those replies have to be top caliber or you get major points docked off, so ridiculous!
One of the best Prof. at Pierce
DON'T GO TO THE ER 2 DAYS IN A ROW AND EXPECT HER TO HELP IF YOU MISS A DEADLINE. NOT JUST COUGH COUGH SICK, 2 ER VISITS, FULL BODY HIVES AND A PANIC ATTACK. HAD TO INVOLVE THE DEAN TO GET HER TO EXTEND ONE DUE DATE. I WAS SHOCKED AT THE LACK OF UNDERSTANDING. LIFE HAPPENS.
Beth was so sweet on zoom! but her work was absolutely horrible. class was not fun and we all tended to struggle with trying to master the material, i would recommend taking humanities all together honestly, but if possible avoid Beth's class due to the fact she seems to never be satisficed with your best work.
Shes not the worst teacher, but she also isnt one of my top favorite teachers. She offers a grace period of 3 days which I enjoyed because I typically aim for the due date but sometimes things happen and so I do it by the grace period. Theres about a discussion forum each week, but workload is not too much, just enough to slightly challenge you.
Her grading was easy. Put in half effort on papers and get an A. Discussions are taken very seriously and make up a lot of your grade. Toward the end of the quarter there's lots of extra credit. She answered emails timely, she takes politeness very seriously. Overall, good teacher, communicated very well and had a 3 day grace period on all essays.
Beth is the best English teacher I ever had. After taking her class I was tempted to take English 102 even though I didn't need it to graduate. I should mention, that I took her class in 2003 or 2004, she has probably refined her teaching skills and improved.
Beth is one of the sweetest people I have ever met. Unfortunately, her work is a bit messy. She likes to give you a lot of details to the point where it becomes unclear what the prompt is. She gives a lot of creative freedom, which can be good in some cases, or it can make writing assignments a lot more complicated. Be prepared to write nonstop.
I like hearing your opinions and your subjectivity, but if you are mentally forcing me to accept them as facts, that is just inhuman. May you please learn to be objective if you don't know how to be.Lying about being objective when you are being subjective is deceptive and at least be honest and not be unfair, you don't get paid to be unprofessional.
Professor Stevens is a sweet lady. She always left amazing compliments on every assignment I've submitted to her. During my time in her course, she gave us a lot of extensions to complete our assignments on time.
Professor Steven's was super sweet and definitely has great intentions as a professor, but her module/ assignment instructions were quite unorganized and hard to follow. Grading was very lenient and she gives amazing feedback. If her module was more organized and easier to follow she would get 5/5.
When I took this class the main topic was climate justice/climate change which isn't everyones cup of tea but I thought the class was great. Gives amazing feedback and is very understanding. I can tell she truly wants what is best for her students and is willing to push them. Weekly discussion posts as well as write ups every few weeks. Loved!
Beth Stevens is by far the most unprofessional professor that pierce has. She is extremely unclear/unforgiving when it comes to late work, and she patronized me for misunderstanding and doesnt grade clearly. DO NOT TAKE HER
The best English professor I have ever had. Rarely had two assignments a week, a weekly discussion, with sometimes a write-up or bibliography. Lengthy but easy. Super nice in her grading and feedback. Has a lot of resources for you to help yourself, so she gets a little passive-aggressive if you ask her, but she will still help. Highly recommend.
She is awesome as an instructor, I must have taken almost all of her classes, and she truly helped me become a better student. She was always available for help or a chat, and she really does want all of her students to be successful. She lays everything out in her syllabi—follow that, participate, write good papers/tests, and you'll be golden.
