Really simple teacher. Grades tough at frist then gradually becomes easier as semester comes to an end. Doesnt assign a lot of papers or homework but, and is real easy going. Do the work and everything will be fine.
very good for aspiring writers... extermely helpful and always tries to be down to earth with her students.. great to have her as an 830 she'll keep you awake.. the class goes by quickly. homework is simple enough to do.. great teacher
great teacher,is willing to help students anytime and she works on your time. You couldnt ask for more in a teacher, absoultely great.
Awesome professor, she's hilarious and speaks to her students like they're adults, makes material very interesting and easy for you to understand, I honestly wish I could have her for every class, she keeps the class very lively.
Professor Swanson is a wonderful teacher. She can be a tough grader on the essays but gives you a chance to edit them and turn them in for a higher grade. A very fair person for the most part. Take her class, she's very informative.
fun class- good person- a lot of assignments- hard grader
No Comments
very down to earth and knows what shes talking about when it comes to writing. she can be a tough grader but she lets you revise pretty much everything for a better grade
No! Don't do it. She may act like she's cool, but she really isn't. Not the kind of prof. you want for a course that is 100% subjective. This class is a general requirement for every major, so you have to take it, but you certainly don't have to take it with her. There are better profs at MU who won't rip your paper to shreds for not being perfect.
ugh.. biast grader... worked my ass off in that class and ended up with a C+, my lowest grade at MU. If she doesnt agree with what your topic is good luck with passing. oh and the peer revisions are worthless!! dont take her
the worst profeesor @monmouth. she is a very hard grader, but it's not like, she is very bright and that's what she expect of us. she doesn't her grammer at all because she corrected me on my paper where I was right and she actually made a grammer error. she is very bad. she gave me a B and i have never got a B at monmouth. she runied my GPA.
OMG please spare yourself.. i didn't learn anything in this class and I got a C when I really deserved an A. She will ruin your GPA beware!
swanson is my absolute fav professor at monmouth. shes really fun and smart and gives crerative assignments. i actually enjoyed most of her assignments. take her if you can
DO NOT TAKER HER CLASS if use write using words such ae: IS, ARE, WAS and HAVE!!!!!!!
Coolest. Teacher. Ever. I loooove this woman. I have never been able to stand Eng classes until now. Def take her if you can!!!!
just read spark notes and show up and you'll do fine. she qives a few random readng checks but they are real easy. midterm and final are open book and she always reads & explains important things and takes test and papers directly from what she goes over in class. she is strict about mla format but if you do that right its an easy A
Prof. Swanson was a fabulous teacher. She actually made lit interesting and I always hated English classes. Its so obvious that people come on here just to be whiny when they don't like their grade. Get over it already. I would def reccommend her to anyone. Just do the work and its an easy class.
she was alright. i can't say i loved her and can't say i hated her. she is funny and her classes are fairly interesting but if she doesn't agree with you then it can be an issue. but overall she's not bad.
Good teacher. Liked her sense of humor. Loves what she teaches and really gets into it. Make sure you do the reading, do your homework, and basically take class like a college student and you'll be fine. I recommend her to upcoming Lit students.
OMG. The last person is just soooo incredibly nasty. Prof. Swanson was an awesome teacher who cared a lot about her students and actually made a English fun. I would highly recommend her to anyone. People who come on here to talk trash when they don't like their grade are so obvious (and so pathetic). Swanson rocks!
I have her right now, and she's ok. Hard grader, but lets you revise if you get a really low grade. Interesting enough class discussions. She goes over everything before exams which are taken right from class discussion. Pop quizzes can be a pain but if you read you'll do ok. All in all, fun class but lots of reading.
Awesome teacher, extremely helpful, and she makes the class interesting and funny. Take her!
Its pointless to even visit this site when u see what some students write just b/c they got bad grades. Let me say for the record that I've had Prof. Swanson 2x(102 & 201) & she is one of the nicest & most caring faculty members at Monmouth. I got good grades in both classes & they weren't that hard. I got your back, Prof. Swanson :-)
Great teacher. You will write a lot in this class. Usually it's a paper or two a week. Definitely interesting class conversations and paper topics. Don't skip class and don't get behind on your papers. She helps you transition out of your high school writing into your college voice. Def recommend, wish I could've taken her next semester.
hard, confusing grader. even if you have no grammer errors, you could still get a B for not writing what she wants to hear/thinks is interesting. she does give extra credit and likes when you go to the writing center, but I got a B+ on almost everything no matter what, and ended with a B+. Idk, I class is interesting, take her if you like writing
I love Prof. Swanson! She is by far the best English teacher or prof that I've ever had. So helpful and really funny. The class is a lot of writing which can be hard if you're not used to it, but there is also a lot of creativity in the assignments which lets you come up with your own ideas on the papers. I wish I could take her for every class.
LOVE her! Best English class I've ever had in high school or college. Funny as hell, assignments are usually pretty subjective. Take her!
I had her last semester and it was my favorite class @ MU. Its not a typical "English class" where you just read boring novels and discuss. Topics & readings were actually intresting and the discussions help you write papers. Lets you pick your own topic for the final project. Can be a hard grader, but lets your revise. All in all, would recommend
I have her this semester for lit. I freakin' LOVE her.
Prof Swanson keeps an often boring class interesting. She has many funny stories and explains all directions and points very clearly, often providing handouts. She also holds interesting discussions in class and lets you revise most work. All in all, I'd recommend her as an English prof. She gives you a lot of leeway with choosing essay topics too
I ADORE HER. Seriously, best teacher I've ever had. I loved this class and I trust me, I usually hate English classes. LOVE!
Let me just say that I can't stand English classes but this was the one exception. The whole class was based around the idea of evil which was really interesting and it was the first english class ever where I actually enjoyed going. Would def recommend for anyone who needs to take lit next year.
Just had her as my tutor for English class this summer. LOVE her to death!!! I wish I could take all my classes with her this fall.
Hands down - best professor I had at Monmouth. I'm not even an English major.
She's a wonderful Prof. One of the best at Monmouth. She loves what she teaches and her degree is in supernatural Literature. Her perspectives are insightful and interesting. I Loved her class. Highly Recommended!
I had/have her for Lit 2. Amazing. Probably one of the best teachers I've had at Monmouth, hands down. Take her if you can!
This was my favorite class and professor this semester. Really interesting and fun. The whole class was mostly discussion and you get to pick what you want to do your final project about. Would def. recommend her :)
This was an interesting class. Very "un-typical" of what I'm used to in English classes. There was a lot of reading but everything related to the idea of where evil comes from. Prolly the first time I ever liked an English class. Not a lot of papers but the exams are HARD. Overall would recommend. Liked her :)
Best English Teacher. She was interseting, funny, and I learned a lot. The class was VERY reasonable and not stressful at all. There is no final or midterm test, rather you have a final project instead which is really fun!!! TAKE HER
By far my favorite teacher at Monmouth. Prof. Swanson's class is awesome. She is def. a hard grader but lets you revise all your essays to improve your grade. Incredibly nice and really genuinely cares about her students. Also has a really funny, kinda quirky sense of humor which really made the class fun. Def. recommend :)
Very nice lady and her class is pretty easy. Definitely suggest taking her if you can!
Amazing professor, amazing person :)
She is a great professor. English sucks and so does writing essays but she is an easy grader doesn't give a lot of essays and offers corrections on all essays. Easy A and a great and funny professor.
One of the best teachers I''ve ever had and one of the kindest people I''ve ever met. So yeah you should probably take this class if you can.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. I love her! Her class is interesting and she lets you come up with what you what to write about for your papers. She is a tough grader but lets you revise and if you go to her office hours she'll actually help you write the whole paper. English is the only class I don't mind going to this semester.
I really love Prof. Swanson. I was never good at English classes in high school and I told her in the beginning of the year that I'm not at all a good writer and she has been so helpful in supporting me so I could do really well in the class. If I could take her class for every English class at Monmouth I would. She is the BEST :)
Terrible grader. If you're not a great writer, choose another professor because she will attack your papers. She expects so much out of you and the papers are challenging.
I can honestly say this was the first English class I've ever had that actually helped me with my writing. She's a tough grader, but fair, and if you work for it, you can do well. Go to her office hours and she'll help you writerevise your papers. I did much better on my papers when I started going to office hours. Would recommend :)
This is by far the best English class I've ever taken. Not an easy A by any means but she will help you with EVERYTHING. I've never had any prof who gives as much written feedback on papers and tells you exactly what you need to do to improve your grade. She's so nice too. Def recommend :)
For the final paper, we had to write about gay marriage. She made up her own definition of marriage and said it is in the Constitution. There is no provision within the Constitution that defines marriage. So that was confusing. Also, I sent several e-mails seeking help, respond, and whens she did her answer is "look in syllabus". Take someone else.
I have never met a teacher that has given more constructive feedback than her. All her revisions make sense for a clear, well-written paper. She is a tough grader but as long as you start your first paper with a B you could definitely end the class with an A. She is really funny too.
This professor is the hardest grader ever!! If it is not done HER WAY and HER WAY ONLY you WILL NOT pass this class. She acts like she's going to be easy and the class won't be impossible, then she turns around on you and gives all your essays horrible grades even after going to the writing center. STAY AWAY!!!!
Prof. Swanson is the best. She gives tons of feedback on assignments, along with rubrics that spell out exactly how papers are graded and exactly what you need to include to get the best possible grade. She even lets you email her parts of your paper as you're writing it to make sure you're setting it up right. Tough grader? Yes. But fair.
Professor Swanson is everything you could want in a professor. She is kind, caring & compassionate towards her students and, she's also very funny and has a great sense of wittiness about her. She gives rubrics which help you greatly and she offers revisions for essays you may not have done well on. Take her class, you won't regret it.
After transferring to Monmouth and really disliking my previous English professor, having Professor Swanson was very refreshing. I have to say I am actually upset her class is ending because she gave papers that I enjoyed writing, graded very fairly, gave rubrics, and she is funny and personable. Hands down one of the best professors at Monmouth.
Professor Swanson is by far my favorite professor at Monmouth. She is hilarious and very relatable. She is always willing to help whether in office hours or by appointment. If you show you care and ask for help you will do well. Tough grader, but very fair. I learned so much from her class and instruction I would definitely recommend her 10/10!!
Very interesting and relaxed class, the course theme was fate vs. free will which made us think in depth about the topics and readings covered. Only issue I had was that the section I was in had honors students in it, which was no issue but Prof. Swanson respected them more and would only email them when she was going to miss class.
I loved Prof. Swanson. This was a great class and she is very easy going and easy to relate to. She's very enthusiastic in the way she teaches and has workshops where you can pick what you want to work on in your papers and she'll help you. Plus she's super nice and honest in her feedback that she gives you.
Beth makes the classes and readings very relatable, she also adds some comedy to them. A lot of reading, but if you keep up you'll do fine.
She takes forever to grade papers and it pretty critical for even the rough drafts. You need to put in a lot of effort to get a good grade.
Swanson LOVES to hear herself talk. She rambles on and on the entire class period and it never seems to end. It's like a bad dream that you can never wake up from. She never gets out of her chair. She also likes to talk about her personal sex life, which is extremely awkward. She looks like the blueberry girl from the Willy Wonka movie.
Beth is a very nice woman and makes class fun when talking about the movies we watch which made it even more surprising that she was such a harsh grader. She made it seem like everyone would excel in the class, but then graded our presentations and papers so harshly. There was not enough time between papers, so everything was back to back.
Prof. Swanson assigned a lot of papers, which could be all piled up at once which made the class super hard. She gives very detailed feedback back on all of the papers, which really helps you write the final paper. Made us get the textbook but we never used it. Great professor, always made the class interesting.
Professor Swanson was one of the best professors I had. Yes, the class was challenging, but I learned so much that all the hard work was worth it! She gives her time to help you achieve your goals and she gives amazing feedback. Highly recommend taking her!
OMG take her, this class was amazing and I loved attending. She made it so fun and you literally watch the movies on the books. She is the sweetest thing
I have taken Professor Swanson three times and if I had the chance I would again. She is by far the best English professor Monmouth offers. She is so brilliant and really engages the class to be interested in the material. She is the reason I switched my major to English. LOVE HER!!!! TAKE HER!! She will change your life!
A really tough grader, helps you outline your papers. If you don't speak up in her class she won't like you. She grades your outlines and if you're still in the thought process you won't get a good grade. Only liked her class because it is based on a movie. Very hard to get a good grade and please her with anything tho.
Really sweet Professor. The class theme was horror movies and she kept the class so interesting. It is a paper based class so you will have to write but she requires an outline so you stay on track. Would take her.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. In class Swanson rambles about movies she watches and likes, we really don't cover any important material and it is on rare occasion we crack our textbook open. I do not think I learned any writing skills or reading skills for that matter. You will have to do projects and if you get on her good side you will get A... SUCKED
She taught a Horror fiction class. We once watched a segment of a romantic drama movie and she told us 'my heart would fail if I watched that'. Her horrific attitude towards life makes her class lectures equivalent to rubbing sand paper all over the body and laying in a tub full of salt water for an 1hr 35 min. May god have mercy on those who take.
Had her for her horror class. Spends a lot of time talking about her personal views. If she doesn't like your paper idea, you'll get a C since it "doesn't follow the rubric". Follow her feedback and talk in class, you'll end with an A or B. If you skip class, she gets passive aggressive. Assigns a lot of group work, barely uses the textbook.
Dont take this class. Its a horror films class which could be interesting if she wasn't so picky and self absorbed. She's incredibly specific and a tough grader and I honestly did not learn a single thing in her class. She doesn't seem to get that this class is a gen ed, nobody wants to be there we all just need it to graduate.
don't take this class. it is a horror fiction class and I can guarantee you that this will be the most useless course you will ever take. you spend all of the class time overanalyzing movies that are seriously not that deep and to make it even better Beth is an insanely harsh grader and if you don't have the same opinions as her you'll prob fail.
Confusing/misleading feedback. Says your paper looks good and then says opposite when you finish it. Very particular, harsh grader. Feels like you are being graded at an honors level for a gen ed. You can go out of your way to hit each requirement for a paper or project and you *might* get an 80. Everyone else I know that has had her says the same.
Professor Swanson was one of the hardest paper-graders. However, I feel 100 times more prepared to write papers than ever before. Very difficult course, but I would take her again. Lots of effort and good writing skills required, so if you hate writing papers then don't take this course, you will not do well. 3 difficult papers with a lot of rules.
No matter what you do, you will not get anything above a B on papers. In a paper-heavy class, this is a huge problem. She also enjoys talking about her sex life for some reason in the middle of class which was quite distracting. Ain't nobody got time for that.
This is your typical liberal english teacher that lives with 20 cats at home. I would withdraw from the class if you ever get her.
AVOID, DO NOT TAKE! She will make up everything as she goes. There is no feedback for grading. JUST. DON'T.
not clear with assignments
Would give a 0 if I could. Awful grader, unfair course, just run far far away from this class. Only 3 major grades and if you're in a bad group might as well drop. I wish I had listen to all these reviews before class started.
Pros: Most of the classwork is watching films and writing about them so you're not swamped with a ton of reading like most English classes. Cons: Does not have a clear rubric. If you want to get an A you need to "go above and beyond," which is very subjective. She seems to grade more by her feelings than by the quality of the content.
In my experience, I honestly loved this class and I love how she respected the fact that I wasn't a fan of horror movies. Our essays were based on the textbook and films plus she gives us discussion posts to develop our ideas. Since they are older movies, it wasn't really scary to watch, and it made me enjoy the class even more.
Worst teacher ever. hard grader and feedback didn't make sense. NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS she gives loads of homework ON THE WEEKENDS. literally hated this class and everyone else did to. we focused on a movie the whole time and it was so boring. it was hard to keep my eyes open in this class. good luck if u have her
She was a nice professor but bad at giving feedback, really pushed the writing center that didn't help. The rubric was not clear and you really had to go above & beyond, participate in class to do decent. The discussion boards were the worse, they were due at 10 pm on Sunday nights. If you like horror movies, the whole class was based on that.
in my experience, i really enjoyed having professor swanson. she was really nice and the content was always interesting. that being said, the class is difficult and you do have to work for your grade, this is not an easy "a" class. however, you will walk away from her class a strong writer. there was a lot of homework compared to other courses.
Beth is something else. A horror film based English class sounds INCREDIBLE, but this professor takes that idea and makes it the worst it could possibly be. No clear grading criteria, and provides no feedback. Told me I dont know how to write when other profs love my papers. Also, seems to not be fond of poc. Avoid avoid AVOID.
Prof Swanson is ok. The biggest issue I have with her class is the way she grades group projects as a collective, not based on the work of the individual. 3/5 group projects ive had to throw together slides 15 min before class because some people put forth 0 effort. Despite the extra work I still only have an 80 in the class. Very frustrating.
I love her class, and her focus on horror movies. I feel that she explains everything very clearly, and her lectures are always fun. She's always accessible outside of class, and is very helpful when people ask questions. Even if you don't like horror movies that much, she tries to make it as enjoyable as possible.
Meeting expectations gets you a 75. She assigns lengthy discussion boards every Friday afternoon, due Sunday night. Asides from that, she's incredibly rude towards certain people. Not only that, she tells you not to even reach out to her if you need an extension "as your request will be denied". Save yourself, don't take a class with her.
I greatly enjoyed her class and working with her! The class is focused on horror movies, so if that's not your cup of tea, skip her class. Her grading is a little tough, but she truly wants to see her students succeed in her class, and she always gives advice on how to improve your grades. I highly recommend her class!
Prof Swansons class is engaging and fun. Most of the class is comprised of discussions, where you just sit and talk with her the whole time. She makes concepts very intriguing and implores participation. She is a very tough grader, but if you follow her feedback, you will be okay. Mainly group projects with only two individual assignments.
Beth Swanson has 1000 words due every single week, that should explain enough.
One of the worst professors in this university by far. Amount of work for an English gen-ed exceeds my other 4 classes. A 1000-word discussion board a week not including other assignments. Is always unavailable claiming work life balance takes u a week to answer an email labeled urgent? If you don't become Shakespear when your writing expect a 75.
Swanson is a very nice Professor. She really wants her students to succeed and pushes them to their best potential. She assigns weekly writings that could be tedious. She is also super funny and doesn't talk down to her students. The whole course was based off of one movie and not a book which I really enjoyed.
I took this class for coll comp 2. let me just say, if you want to cry yourself to sleep every night take this class! your weekends will be ruined because of the overly long discussion boards, and the failing grade you will get from it. she does too much just for it to be a pre-req. she gives of rude vibes and she clearly has favorites. do NOT take
I've been in school for 15 years now, and I have never had a professor/teacher as rude and unprofessional as Swanson. She assigns weekly discussion boards that you have two days to complete, and she refuses to give extensions or provide any meaningful feedback. She is so out of touch, and you're setting yourself up for failure if you take her.
Id prefer not to discuss the experience... It was that bad!
This professor needs to be fired. she Publicly humiliated a classmate! I am scared to speak up. she brings her problems and takes them out on her students. DONT TAKE HER CLASS SHE IS ACTUALLY OUT OF CONTROL we all thought a movie in class would be fun. but don't be fooled she grades things unethically due to her mood.
Hardest grader ever, It was frustrating for the whole class, Im good at writing and my best grade was the final of a 88, I got the best grade in the class. The most challenging thing was the week discussions where we had to write an essay in 2 days, happening more than once. She is super sweet but a hard grader but its manageable.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH HER. Very rude professor who does not want to see her students do well. She does not care about any personal issues or absolutely any valid excuse for anything. Her grading is also impossible. Save your time and do not take this course.
Probably one of the worst Professors Ive ever had. Definitely stay away at all costs unless you are willing for a GPA drop. Has no clue that sometimes that life gets in the way expects you to complete assignments no matter what. STAY AWAY
She has no consideration for her students and couldn't care less if they succeed or not. She makes no exceptions for ANYTHING and gives you 4 days to write 1100 word papers for weekly discussions. Not to mention, you have to do 30 pages of reading before you can even complete the writings. Just to get a 75 because you didn't “exceed expectations”.
Discussion boards are a pain, until you hear your friends complaining about a 10 or 15-page paper they have to write. Decent amount of reading, but it's interesting. She loves horror movies, so that's what the whole course is on.
She somehow has extra credit count into your grade and is horrible as a professor. Horrible grader and seriously if you have her SWITCH OUT.
