Very Hard, Very Helpful, Reccomend you take her Class
She's difficult, and makes her students feel like dirt. The best way to pass her class is to pretend that you're just like her. Don't let her snide comments get to you!
Confusing class. Not very clear (or too clear?). Teaches by Socratic method. Betsy is VERY sarcastic, and often quite funny. Be sure to take coffee with you (ha ha). Although she seems really mean and rude on the first class, she warms up a lot l
Best english class I have ever taken. I hav3e never been learned as much about writing as I have in this calss. I woudl recomend it to anyone who really wants to put sime effort into an extremly helpful english class. Betsy is the best.
she is one of the worst teacher i ever had.
very good teacher. the summer course was off the hook! Take Her 1b course, its mad easy!
She's crazy! Great teacher though.. tells u exactly what she wants on her essays, makes u think shes really hard but shes not.. quizzes are from the main book that she gives u, homework is basically done in class... ALWAYS BRING CAFFINE! Overall really cool
shes comletely nuts! (too much caffiene) oh and yes im in english 1c and i cant spell caff (what ever) Spoon fed everything, shes not really that hard! She appreciates my comments in class, especially the ones that "english is the reason i wake up in the morning" But the hot girls dropped! GAH!
i really did not like her. when she is in a bad mood watch out. try to stay out of the way.make sure you bring coffe to her class. if i were you i would only take her class if i did not have any other options.

first of all, this instructor teaches her eng. classes very differently from other instructors. The person that says she's not hard is nuts, because she is hard. She is helpful and will clear everything if you need help. You can't mess around in this class. She's cool overall ( too much caffeine
She is hard in 1C. You can't miss any days. Lots of work, but she helps out-so this makes it worthwhile. She is alot more relaxed in 1B and is super cool. Lots of group work- pretty easy.
she is nuts, you have to have a caffeinated drink or shell get mad. seriously dont recommend her, extremely hard! You will drop her class, very biased too
This class has been one on the hardest classes i have ever taken. It made my cry, that's how bad it was. It got to the point where I was nervous and scared to go to class. She is so damn hard expects too much, she thinks all students should be perfect, a really hard class. Nobody gets an A!
Seems wild and out of control at first but she grows on you.she lectures a mile a minute so be prepared to keep up but very insightful.Don't recommend her for 1c or any lower english because she was always poking fun and telling us how she despied her 1c students and what they wrote.but if you want to learn shakespeare she makes it interesting.
She comes off as kind of a hard ass, but all her assignments are really easy, and if you even do a minimal amount of work you'll do fine.
Make sure to bring CAFFEINE to her class!! McCormick's style of teaching is interesting,so you don't get bored. The class is very easy at first because she tells you exactly what she wants on the essays. But it does get harder as the class continues, so prepare to work hard.
She is a fair teacher and explains exactly what she wants and expects from you. You can't expect to sail through the class without working, but if you make an effort, you will get the grade that you deserve. She made this class interesting and it always went by really quickly. This was my favorite class taken at Mt.SAC.
Very hard, but you'll be such a better thinker and a better writer because of Betsy. A must take for the serious student hoping to transfer. Betsy, you rock!
the symposium NEVER occured. She's very helpful but also somewhat demanding. And she is pretty HOT.
one of the very best teachers I have ever had. Not for slackers. Betsy is funny and tries hard to explain exactly what she wants. I highly recommend her to serious students.
This is college, and many students seem to forget or push that out of their heads as often as possible. Betsy reaffirms our stature as college students, which is so necessary and commendable with the other professors we are faced with here at Mt.SAC. I finally encountered a teacher who KNEW I (we) could do better and DEMANDED it.Grow up and take he
It seems like Betsy is upset that she's teaching at a community college...Speaks to the class as if everything that is being said is some form of revelation...the readings were enjoyable, but her sarcasam and "dumbing" down of students is rather unpleasent.
totally awesome. scary at first, but really puts the fire under your ass. once i took her i ended up getting out of mt. sac and on to a university within 2 semesters. now i am graduating in june. i owe it all to her for giving me that push. very inspirational and very encouraging. most favorite teacher ever.
This professor seems hard at first, but she is so nice to look at that it's worth it! But the class does mellow out toward the end, but like I said, she is so HOT! I wouldn't mind taking her class with her initial attitude
She is by far the best (and at times, the worst) prof I have ever encountered. She is like a roller coaster so stay the hell away when she starts heading downhill into cranky territory. She makes you think and some people don't like that.Don't be fooled by her mean and strict persona, she's really a nice person if you get to know her.bring coffee!
She's the WORST teacher I have ever had. She tells you exactly what she wants on her essay's, tells you that their good, and then gives you a "C". If you ask for help she won't give it. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU WANT TO LEARN ANYTHING!! I'm a 4.0 student---it's not me, she's just a horrible teacher
englishe 1c wus bery much funny and i learnted so much from it i will wrote essaies and buks and poetries to my harts' contentions! she is hotttt like a bell peper ooooo boy hottt mamma! e=mc2 dun forgetit if u wanna successes and score a+ in hot momma's classes
I'm taking her again. She's hopped up on caffeine, and very passionate about her subject.
she is so f@#*ing crazy. You gotta love it!Not interested in BS,tells it like it is,but watch out when she's pissy! It's bad news.Everybody at Mt. Sac should take her, but be warned:there is no middle ground, you love her or hate her.Oh yeah,it's pretty tough to get an A, so if you're like a high-strung honors student, forget it.
Very hard on grading. She makes it seem like she's giving you exactly what she wants, but in reality you'll find that she's very hard to please. She will make you read boring material on argumentation and then quiz you on it at the beginning of class. Topics were not interesting. I don't recommend taking her.
Worst teacher yet. She teaches the class like everyone is an english major and assumes everyone already knows what she is talking about. Very confusing and essay assignments just babble your mind. I cant believe she was hired at one of the top Junior Colleges. She needs to get over herself and teach what people will understand. (Take J.Thomas)
It is true that she is a very difficult teacher but she is attempting to prepare students for college life outside of Mt. Sac. Her goal is not to give good grades but to teach students the correct way of doing things.
she is unbeliavable. She has unique personalities. I do not recommend her class for people who do not like philosophy. she teaches critical thinking in philosophy because she believes that it is the science of wisdom. however, you may take her class if you are ready for challenges. go for it.
Betsy is by far my favorite professor at Mt Sac. She is NOT easy, but what you will gain from the class will last you throughout your college career. Her wit and sense of humor make even dull subjects interesting. Because of her, I feel inspired to go to take that extra effort and pursue grad school.I HIGHLY recommend, but prepare to be challenged!
Caffeine, 4 essays, 10 quizzes, 2 exams. The quizzes are extremely short and relatively easy. Her looks and humor are similar to Amy Poehler from SNL. She keeps you awake more than coffee. Extremely hard to get an A, but a B is manageable. It is a learning class. She teaches because she believes that we have the capacity to learn.
I graduated high school in 1991 & I was scared to death about taking freshman comp my first year at MSAC. Instead I took Eng 68 & Betsy was my teacher then. She's amazing & I've never forgotten her. I'm back in school again & I can't wait to take her Lit classes.
Awesome instructor. While in her class, I spent hours writing and rewriting my essays for her. She hates NAR (non argumentative rhetoric). Avoid the NAR at all cost! Turn in an essay and she will find it and slap you in the face for using it. One of the best English instructors I've ever had.
what a wretch! I wish I could explain without foul language!
Excellent teacher. Cares about helping you become the best writer you can be.
McCormick is one of the toughest teachers, but she really makes you THINK CRITICALLY!! She's awesome!! She uses a philosophical approach which may be intimidating but she does a great job in explaining what she wants you to accomplish in each essay. Take her if you want a challenge she's sooo good!!
If you are a serious student and are enrolled in college to **further your knowledge**, then TAKE BETSY MC.CORMICK!!! She's willing to work as hard as you do, and she'll call you on your tendency towards laziness. Seriously, I learned a great deal about how to critically think in her 1C class that I've used in daily life! Don't forget your coffee ;
Well, like the previous comments, an A was difficult. She's not super horrible.. but if there's someone better to take for the semester, take that one.
She is an excellent teacher. This is a hard class but you learn alot. All teachers should care about teaching the way she does.
She was ridiculously demanding and harsh on grading, despite missing at least 4 of the class's 3-hour weekly sessions. Her lectures are drawn out, repetitive, and boring. She constantly belittles and criticizes the ENTIRE class for no reason. Apparently noone could match up to her standards. She's a decent person overall, but a horrible professor
My favorite professor at MSAC. I found her lectures to be among the best I have encountered, and I looked forward to them every week. She definitely challenges her students, but if you are a serious student, you WANT to be challenged. Highly intelligent, highly energetic, and highly critical. Perfect for English majors. I would take her again!
Awesome teacher. She WILL challenge you. She does toss insults here and there but they're great, keep the class intresting, keep you on your toes and make you analyze your way of thinking. Top noch teacher, awesome person.
Great prof. She is kind and approachable. Some assignments can get difficult, but she will help you out if you show her your rough drafts. I'm actually a better essay writer now thanks to this class. She also has this extremely sarcastic sense of humor which I found to be awesome. She pokes fun at EVERYTHING, so class was always interesting.
She's interested in what you have to say, not how pretty you can make a sentence sound. She lays everything out for you to get an A and provides you with the resources to do so. I took her class as a first semester freshman and got an A. She's tough, but you'll learn. If you want to be challenged and be knowledgeable in lit, take Betsy McCormick.
she is hard, but you won't really find a cooler teacher than this.
After finishing graduate school and becoming a teacher now myself, I can still say that she is absolutely the best teacher I ever had! It is very evident that she has a great passion for what she teaches.6A is a lot of work because of the nature of the course. However, if you're dedicated and do your work, you can get an A. ENG 1B is fun, fun, fun!
She is amazing. After two Cal States, one private school, and three community colleges, she remains the best professor I have ever taken.
She's definitely got an intimidating bark, but if you try your absolute damnedest and seek her help, you'll do fine. She gives you more than enough room to do well; you just have to put in a fair amount of effort. The only other class I've ever had as challenging as this one was her 6A class. Be ready to read.
You will become a critical thinker. You will suffer quite a bit, but by the end you won't even recognize the work you had previously done. She will yell at you, but if you do the homework and consult her about the essays you can do just fine. Remember THE GOOD
Dr. McCormick is easily my favorite professor. She's is SO funny. But don't let that fool you. I'm a 4.0 BioChem student and this class is HARD. She'll make you work, but as long as you do EVERYTHING she says, you should be fine. I've told all my friends to take 1C with her. I love her
Dr. McCormick is easily my favorite professor. She's is SO funny. But don't let that fool you. I'm a 4.0 BioChem student and this class is HARD. She'll make you work, but as long as you do EVERYTHING she says, you should be fine. I've told all my friends to take 1C with her. I love her
This class was one of the best I have ever had. She is indeed very helpful when you need it. Just stay on top of all the work and do not wait until the last minute to do it.
McCormick is challenging. If you get a bad grade in her class, it is because you didn't put in enough effort- enough said. She's sarcastic, and she'll tell you your work sucks, but if you show her that you are trying, she will work with you so that you grow as a student. Take advantage of having such an excellent educator.
Professor McCormick is one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. She is very hard and challenging. If you are lazy than don't take this class...you will surely die. I pulled hard at the end and passed with a C which was much more than I expected. Shes a great professor but not for the faint of heart.
I am an honors student, and she has challenged me in ways that the Honors classes don't. She's funny, willing to work with her students, and honest about how bad your work might be, but she genuinely wants you to learn. Accept her sarcasm and get ready to work your ass off- homegirl don't play!
I have taken Betsy for every class she teaches. She challenges you to be the best student you can be for your own sake. Yes, you work hard, but if you are willing to stick it out you will be a better student. That's what a good teacher is supposed to do for you. Stop whining!
Easily the best Lit Professor at Mt Sac.
Definitely the best English professor at Mt.SAC. She will work you hard, but you will learn so much and your writing will improve dramatically.
As if it hasn't been said enough times--the best English professor at Mt.Sac. Yes, she'll challenge you, but that's what any good professor should do. LOVE her!
McCormick will challenge you. She's not for the faint of heart, in order to do well in the class you'll really have to bust your ass. Just do EXACTLY what she tells you for homework. Chances are she doesn't expect most of the class to do it because Mt. "Slack" is full of immature people. Your writing style and level of thinking will skyrocket.
She will make you work very hard and all your time will be spent on the essays and homework. If you want an easy teacher don?t take her because she will make you work till you want to run in the opposite direction screaming but if you can stick it out the benefits out weight the negatives and you will gain a whole new perspective on writing.
Dr. McCormick is an excellent professor. She is helpful and honest. By far not easy, but teaches students to respect their own ideas, to think critically and to write logical papers. Highly recommend!
DR. MCCORMICK IS TOUGH. With that being said, you will definitely not be the lost and aimless CC transfer student after taking her class. Her expectations are clear, and it is up to you to follow them. ASK FOR HELP. Do not assume you can do everything on your own or fly through the course with BS. She is a great professor, rec for SERIOUS students.
Professor McCormick is a wonderful literature professor. She engages the class and makes the history of British literature come alive. Never a dull moment. And you are sure to experience a spontaneous overflow of powerful emotions!Reading material is excellent, too.
Dr. McCormick is tough! However, she is always willing to help students who ask for her help! Recommend for serious students who care about learning more than getting an easy A, because you will not get one!
Professor McCormick is tough! I struggled through most of her class, but was able to pull out a passing grade. Don't expect an easy grade! Probably one of the hardest courses I've ever taken, but in the end I realize it was a good experience. She really pushes you to work hard which is great and prepares you for the nxt lvl. Nice lady, but tough!
Am I happy with the grade I received? No. Do I think I deserved a better grade? Most certainly. Would I take this class again? Yes. Dr. McCormick taught me how to write a clear argument using a simple formula. That knowledge is priceless. I will use the tools I learned in this class when I transfer and in my professional life. Highly recommended.
Content of the work is not hard. The workload itself is HARD. Overall very passionate teacher and I like her jokes but one thing I dont understand.. She begins the semester by telling her students that we wont do any of the 10 intensive study guides, and yet she still counts it as 10% of our grade. It causes more anxiety than writing actual essays.
I took this as a hybrid course & thought it'd be easy, but it was pretty hard. Essays one right after another. Literally. It helps a lot if you continuously email her to review your paragraphs -- probably the only reason I got good grades on all mine. This class requires a lot of time and drains your brain. Dont take if you're looking for an easy A
Not an easy A! Thought it would be a simple hybrid class but I was wrong. Just glad I survived the class and this is coming from someone who loves writing essays. I wouldn't recommend this class to someone taking a heavy workload.
Do not take this professor if you are taking 4 or more classes. There is a lot of work required for this class. She is a super tough grader as well. Would not recommend unless you have tons of time to devote to the course.
She was an insanely tough grader. Nearly half the class dropped and only 2 people had a passing grade by the time finals came around. This class is close to impossible unless you are ONLY taking her course.
Keep in mind it's a Hybrid class, and not an easy A. Professor McCormick is a great professor! Ask, and she'll answer. Quizzes are taken from the book. She tells you up front what she wants in her essays, it's just a matter of giving it to her. Class itself isn't hard, it's a matter of understanding the readings. Overall, highly recommend.
She's challenging, and that's what I love about her. She will push you beyond your limits to help you grow as a writer. She is extremely difficult but she's a great person and always willing to help so long as you let her know you need the help. She's great!
Do not take this class! She is nice but a really tough grader and it is basically impossible to get an A. I had a 3.5 GPA but got a D in her class. Super tough!
Horrible! i never missed class and always went to office hours i emailed all my rough drafts like she requested for a pre proofing multiple times per essay and she still gave me bad grades like didn't she see something in her teaching wasn't working? anyway there is no winning with her. i did EVERYTHING she asked and MORE i got an ( D) as my grade
She is definitely tough, but if you want to learn, this is the class for you. Essays almost back to back and she assigns A LOT of work, but it makes you become a better writer. Her lectures are not boring, but they are a little long.
She can be intimidating. You will stress out, probably a lot. Tip: APPROACH her. She pretty much tells you what she wants on the essays. The last essay on the syllabus is like 300 pts and seems super intimidating but she grades lightly on it (gives pity points). If you show effort throughout the course and act like you're getting it, you'll pass.
Dr. McCormick is one of my favorite professors. When I read through her reviews, all I can say is those bad reviews must come from lazy students who expect easy grades. If you want to learn, take Dr. McCormick. Nothing in this world is free. You want a good grade? Earn it! She'll give you the grade you earn! I earned an easy A. I worked!
don't waste your time. money. or effort on her or your class the results are disappointing. you will end up having to retake because you either didn't pass or because you got a low grade so you have to recover your Gpa. so no matter how tight you are on time or what just avoid this professor at all costs! no matter how hard you try it won't pay off
Worked day and night for the full 16 week semester. Went to office hours, and emailed her daily getting feedback on rough drafts she tells you not to go to tutoring center. I ended up receiving a D- in this class after all that work. I retook the class with prof loera-ramierez in a 8week course i only worked half as hard as the first time got a B+.
McCormick is splendid. She goes out of her way to help you pass her class. Yes, the loaded with material so make it easy on yourself and stay on top of it. McCormick also accepts all "late" work for a full grade until the last class meeting. She is also very engaging and funny which makes the class entertaining. Final is tough, beware.
McCormick is as real as it gets. If you're planning on transferring to a UC please take her. She will do everything to prepare you. She edits your papers and accepts late work. Her lectures are hilarious, and she really knows her stuff! Do yourself the favor and take a class with her. She literally takes you step by step for everything.
Where do I start? My GOD. This is the hardest English class I've ever taken in my life and English is my favorite! I've heard around the campus of how difficult 1C was and how much READING went into it but I don't think that I could ever prepare myself for the STRESS and ANXIETY I got from this professor. If ENG isn't your strong suit, BEWARE.
Alright, so I took this class Fall 2017, and I have to say it was the hardest English class I ever took in my life. It was complex yet simple... you'll understand by the end of the semester. She requires 3 books, but you rarely use writing matters or they say I say. The last book is definitely used the most because her quizzes are directly from it.
I think people don't like her because its the only class you actually have to use your brain in. although this class is difficult I did learn a lot about, she is also helpful if you really care about passing the class if not she lets you sink.
She is a nice lady as many students said BUT where was the actual critical thinking in this class? She will basically give you a format and we have to fill in the blanks which have to be exactly what she wants. And most of the times, we don't know what she wants even if you do all the readings. I was so stressed out, my hair started to fall out :(
I found her amazing and incredibly helpful and clear but I am a grown up not looking for a free ride in any class at Mt. SAC. Want to learn? Want to become a better writer? Then McCormick is a must. Looking to be told that the essay you ripped off from the Internet is brilliant? Maybe college isn't the right place for you. Great prof! LOL!
The papers are very formulaic and she is quite a tough grader. Don't take if you are looking for an easy class or if you can't handle her sarcasm. Over wouldn't take again.
Are you ready to transfer into a UC? Probably not. Well, McCormick will set you on the right path. Word to the wise, go to her office hours, show her that you are willing to learn.
There's a ton of reading, but if your an English major looking to learn she is a must! Best English class I've ever taken here. It's not easy, but keep up on the readings and pick Dr. McCormick's brain and ask questions. If you do this she'll set you up for success and you will learn much about Brit Lit. It's a really fun class if you like to read!
Betsy was one of 3 instructor at Mt Sac that lead me into a teaching career. Her class prepared me for transfer to a university and taught me critical analysis skills. Do the work, gain the skills that will will serve you beyond graduating.
Horrible. Went to office hours several times and did not help at all. Very insulting and did not give good feedback. Makes students feel inferior and gets in your face to ask questions. The only Professor I ever had that would walk in and tell the class every paper was horrible and a waste of time. These other reviews are lies.I transferred to a UC
Betsy is a wonderful soul and being in her class was a pleasure. Her assignments are clear and straight to the point. She allows unlimited tries on her online quizzes to help you better understand which really means if you at least try to get a good grade in this class you will pass.
Betsy is awesome. She is so understanding especially during all this covid stuff. There is reading, YouTube videos, but she does a great job and organizing everything so its pretty much laid out for you. There is group work that can be a little hard when it comes to schedules but over great class great professor!!!!
legit all you gotta do is just do the assignments before the semester ends. They were always on top of their grading and gave really solid feedback on everything
She is super nice and understanding. She knows people are tired because of COVID and allows late work for full credit.
I took Mrs. McCormick for spring 2022. There are 5 essays to do, it is easy since she gives you templates and you just need to fill in the gaps. I think the best thing about her is she takes all late work and doesn't take any points away. She is very understanding and is always willing to help. I recommend. !!Don't buy the books, not needed!!
McCormick is such an amazing professor. She offered PDFs of the chapters because of shortage of books. She explains so well in class and in her videos that the book is helpful for those who need to read to grasp concepts, but for students who enjoy lectures and hands on explanations, she provided plenty of that. She's straight forward and upbeat.
Oh my god take her for English!! She gave us templates for each essay we wrote so it was pretty much just fill-in-the-blank. She also gave quizzes every week but they had unlimited attempts and showed you the correct answers after the first try. She also gives you amazing feedback and genuinely cares about how you do. She is amazing!
sweetest professor ever! essays were templates, and she prioritizes students' growth over busy work. she's very down to earth and encourages students to ask questions. lots of group work, which I wasn't a fan of, but she is very understanding. weekly quizzes with unlimited tries. she has been one of my favorite professors, a true angel on campus!
Very kind professor, I recommend this class if writing is not your strong suit. DO NOT BUY the "required" books, I never had to use them. She gives templates for essays (5 essays) & there were some group assignments that werent my fav bc some ppl didn't put in their part. unlimited tries on quizzes and accepts late work with no deductions.
McCormick is a very kind professor who truly wants her students to grow and learn from their work. I took the course online, and it was incredibly easy because she makes it easy! Very fun and engaging professor with good feedback. 5 essays total, and she gives easy templates to use. Only thing I didn't like was the group projects bc of the people
This is probably the best teacher i've had at this school. Super understanding and very forgiving when it comes to work. This is literally a easy A if you just put in some kind of effort. 10/10 and I didn't think it was possible. Only thing I say I didn't really like was the group projects but that was more on my peers than the teacher.
