One of the best profs I have ever had - Not easy though. A lot of work and essay test. but, the class is very worth it.
Made a huge mistake by not dropping the class.
Ms. Powers is an awesome teacher. She gave us the test to study before we actually took the test. Her lectures were not boring at all and she is a very sweet person.
i had dr.powers several years ago. very hard, but loved the class. now a student at UT. if not for her and the study skills i learned to take her class i would really be having a hard time here. i think she was great and was very helpful. i always did the extra credit also.
She co-teaches this class with Dr. Ross-Nazzal, and they are great. It was History & Hollywood when I took it, now it's History & Pop Culture. Very time consuming & lots of reading involved, but they made it so interesting it was worth it. She is really nice and actually cares whether you succeed.
Amazing professor. She knows her stuff.
Very demanding, Good teacher. You have to take notes on what she says on top of the notes she provides. She gives you a review, tests are id and 1 essay, which she gives you way before the tests. There is much more dependence on the book than I would like, but she is a good teacher. Not lenient on late assignments,Assign due weekly
hard to understand how she talks. does not grade fairly. no scantron tests so she grades on if she LIKES your answers. It can be right but not to her satisfaction. Avoid
Lots of power point presentations, but they are not boring, but she does rely a lot on student participation so if you have quiet class mates it will make your time a bit more difficult. Overall a great teacher
I had Dr Powers last summer online, my first online class ever. There was lots of reading, but she was very helpful and I loved her assignments-she always had very interesting questions. She was fair with the grading and she would always give you feedback on your essays, which was great, cuz most of the teachers dont do it. Her tests are a little h
Very gooed - Enjoyed the class. Her lectures are very interesting. Her tests are essay
she does not give out study guides. Her tests are all essay and short answer with over 50 terms to memorize and know the importance of. She doesnt tell the signficance of each term nor does she tell you where they can be found and sometimes you cant find them. She is overall not someone i would take again, she doesnt really care about her students.
Professor Poweres is a great professor, she is straitforward, gives study handouts and her lectures keep you interested enough, I would definately recommend her, and she does use blubooks but as long as you pay attention you will do fine.
Yikes she is hard, but I cant say she isn't fair. Count on doing the homework if u want to pass, go figure.
She does assign reading, which my gosh she actually expects you to read. She tells you the essay question BEFORE the test, cant be more lenient than that. But no T/F Multi Choice, but she looks to see if you actually KNOW the material. Not easy, but challenging.
Not my favorite teacher...She does give the essay question and terms before the test but there are about 50 terms to memorize and them only about 6 you have to know on the test. She does not cover all of them in class or talk about their significance and many of them are not in the book either. Grades extremely hard. Not recommended.
Worst teacher I have ever had! She didn't care about the material or the students. I took her class online and it was horrible. I even went to see her and she still treated me bad. She thinks everyone is going to cheat and doens't give reviews for tests. She expects you to read 60-90 pages a week and then find 50 answers in 55 min. AVOID HER!
Took her online -Extremely hard teacher! I've never had a prof provide so little help in mastering material. No study guides, refuses to let you see tests afterwards. When asked for study tips, she just says read the chapers 2-3 times. Without warning she changed the posting deadlines to 5pm which was never in syllabus. Rude and doen't care.
I took her online and found her class super easy. Just read the material, participate in discussions, keep up with quizzes and test and you'll have no problem acing this class. I found her class to be no problem while taking 2 other classes and working full time.
Took online...avoid if you can! The only grades are 4 (200+ word) discussion posts per week, an essay a week, and a test per week...over 3 chapters! And she does not give a study guide. Questions are so detailed that it is almost impossible to read the material and remember everything she asks. Also does not let you see exams after you take them
This is my first online class and probably my last if this is any example of how it works. No study material, after the quizzes you can't see what you missed to find out what you don't understand. Test questions are not in any of the review labs reviews. She flat told me she never gives a 100 when questioned about my 97 essay grade. Avoid her
difficult essay tests and subjective grading. She doesn't care and neither do her students.
only recommend for those who like to write about 500 words up to 1200 words every other week. must have good writing skills. Her online class is challenging but if you succeed you are one of the few strong students in campus. I only recommend it for people who are desperate or for part-time students that have too much time in their hands.hard exams
I took both 1301 and 1302 online while working full-time and taking 2 other classes. Took 2 weeks to get into the swing of it. Read the text and get a good routine. Tests are straight from the book and are detail-oriented. Nothing unexpected-you know from day one what is required-read, read, and read the text as the questions are from test bank
Surprise-- she actually expects students to read the material instead of relying on being given answers. If you're expecting to drift through college being handed everything, her class-- and college-- aren't for you. No, there aren't study guides, but you might actually learn something.
we had a ton of essays to write
If you expect to take this class and not open the book well your in for a surprise. She just give to much work i took the online course she expects for you to do two discussions essay form at that, quizes every week, three essays, and reserch papers its really not worth take any of the history classes with this lady.hello u teach at a community col
if you ask questions, she is very clear. be prepared to do the reading and study for your exams. she also requires essays. not an easy class
If you have a life and want to keep it, don't take her class. She expects you to devote 18+hours to her class only. Her essay questions were so vague, that it's impossible to give the "right answer". I contemplated dropping her class several times, but stuck with it...this class is not worth the time.
She gives you way more homework than she needs to. Its a History class, not English. I've written more work for her than I've written for my English class. She expects you to buy 5 books and you will have to read your entire text books word for word in order to pass her class. DO NOT RECOMMEND HER AT ALL! Unless you don't want a life that is
She is a great teacher. Online quiz due every Tuesday before class. Exam contains terms which you define and tell why they are important, a map which she has a list and you mark where they are in general, and an essay question she gives you a week in advance and you can email her your response and she will tell you if its ok.
This is a community college basic level course. Not a graduate degree course at Harvard. She requires way too much writing and grades way too hard. Time limits on tests and quizzes too little. Makes us buy too many books for the class. Waste of time and money. Do not take her.
I was nervous after I read all of the bad reviews, but she really wasn't that bad. I think she was fair. You weren't given the answers, you do have to study.
she is a very good professor. she is fair. if you want to learn something, please take her class.
THIS CLASS TOOK UP MORE TIME THAN MY OTHER 3 COMBINED. THERE WAS WAY TOO MUCH READING AND WRITING INVOLVED FOR A HISTORY CLASS. READ ONE 30-40 PAGE CHAPTER PER WEEK, 2 DISCUSSIONS PER WEEK,3 QUIZZES PER WEEK,3 ESSAYS OVER THE ENTIRE SEMESTER. 4 EXAMS,ONE BEING A FINAL.4 CONNECT ASSIGNMENTS THAT WERE PRETTY INTENSE AS WELL AS 17 ONLINE TUTORIALS
Took her online class she is very organized and will also respond to your questions by the next day. READ SYLLABUS and can't go wrong. you don't have to take the quizzes but they DO HELP with your exams!!. DO YOUR WORK AND YOU WILL DO FINE
Wouldn't recommend this teacher. Mandatory quizzes every week over chapters she hasn't even covered yet. Teaches very in depth, but slow, hard to stay interested. To much writing homework for exams. Helps get you prepared for the essay question but diminishes your time to actually learn/study for exams.
I do not recommend this teacher. she gives too much work at non reasonable due dates. if you want to ruin your life go ahead and take her. I think she forgets that this is a History class and not an English class. This is Lone Star not Baylor. Test are pretty straight forward though but the essays will fail you. good luck.
I do not recommend this teacher at ALL. She expects too much from her students! On top of the 2 weekly discussions, weekly chapters to be read (these are LONG CHAPTERS), weekly quizzes, bi-weekly essays and semi-monthly tests; you are also to read 2 other books and take tests on them as well! Couldn't keep up with 4 kids running around!
This teacher is very hard. It is all essay questions and she is very picky about the answers but I will say she is undoubtedly one of the best teachers I've had for a long time. Her explanations are thorough and interesting, so if you can tough it out and take this class. If you just want the history credit then look elsewhere.
I took this class online. This teacher thinks she's an English teacher. She goes through every discussion and every essay with a fine tooth comb. I would never take her again and I wouldn't recommend any one else taking her class.
She was terrible. Her emails were so rude and condescending. She did not teach what so ever. All of her quizzes and tests, and even the final, were from the books website. She basically told us what to read, as she sat back and did NOTHING. The book was terrible, too. It was not well written at all.
She was amazing! Her communication was great. If I had an issue with anything she replied and had it fixed immediately. She was very sweet, and she graded fairly. However, her class was VERY demanding. There were quizzes due in the middle of the week, and discussions due every week, as well as tests and two book assignments. Very demanding.
This was a very hard class, I took this course online and she makes you work. There is so many discussions, test, quizzes and analysis. Some time's the due dates run into each other. She can be very insulting when giving feedback on papers and she believes she is a English teacher. All you do is write essays I would never taker her again!
I would recommend taking Her in class and not online. She is a fun teacher. We play games that go over history. It's not boring she rarely does lectures. If you like group projects and interacting with people take this class it is fun, you will get really into the games. She is a tough grader on essays and you better cite your work, just a heads up
She was very interesting. I've never had a class like this. Everyone knew each other well and competed in games that were fun and interactive.
I attended her class during the fall 2013 and we played a game the entire semester which kept us involved we didn't just memorize the book for tests we actually took on characters and brought them to life in the 1800's. Any issue we had was responded to immediately. She was truly fabulous and I definitely highly recommend her.
She puts most of her focus on being an English teacher. Her direction on essays is very unclear and bipolar as to whether she expects opinion or factual response. Condescending and rude in her feedback; she is not a motivating teacher. Physics was more clear to comprehend than her history class. I would not take another class taught by her!
She had us do an essay twice a week. I felt she was more of an English professor than my actual English professor. I had extreme personal life issues during the semester and fell behind, she would not even email me back when i asked if she could help with extra credit or maybe accepting late wrk for an even partial grade.
2 papers a week, and is a very tough grader on such papers. Even though it was a history class! I've gotten all A's in every english class yet she was my hardest grader, and required many papers on history. So if you love writing about history this is your perfect choice!
By far, my favorite class I've taken throughout my few years of college. We played roleplaying games based on different parts of history, which the whole class enjoyed. You will end up knowing everyone in your class. Don't take if you're not willing to speak in front of people. I actually learned history in her class. Such a fun class.
As someone who has taken several online classes through Lonestar I find this instructor to be the most ludicrous. Most professors want 150 word minimum discussion with a reply or two to others. Not this teacher. Each discussion must be 300-500 words with citation. So pretty much expect to write many papers.
I took this online in the summer. Wrote the equivalent to 40 page paper on average every week, plus discussion. Spent about 60 hours average per week, this was taking 15-30 min. for 60 essay questions per week. Then, you have to read an extra book for the final. Job security class. Very time consuming. Any interest I had is gone.
Great teacher! I really enjoyed the class!! We did role playing games as well as a lot of class discussions. I took honors HIST 1301 and we didn't have any tests. There is homework due every Thursday but it is not difficult. As long as you do your work and attend class you will pass. I am taking her again for HIST 1302.
This professor makes you write as if you were getting a PHD in HIST. I wrote more for this class than ENGL I & II combined. The key terms have 40 subjects and you need to write at least 100 words or more per subject that is 4,000 words per key term there are four of these plus analysis & weekly discussions. All of this to review High school stuff?
This class is incredibly easy if you just do all the work required. Theres 3 games total, 15 total study guides 1 due every week and an honors paper at the end. It is a lot of writing and speaking, but she provides all of the resources for you. She does not grade incredibly hard and gives good feedback. This class was enjoyable and feasible. 10/10.
3 Role playing games: Paterson 1913, Yalta 1945, Chicago 1968. Speech, game, & paper. Put yourself into your game role and participate, you'll know everyone in class by the end. Games are stressful and make you hate each other, don't take it personally. Strict grading on the papers and how you cite them. Give a good speech! No tests but lots of HW!
I took her 1302 Honors class. Easiest class ever! No tests/final, 4 papers and honors paper (8pgs). This is the easiest honors class you will ever take. The class is a role-playing game--tricky at first but, in the long run you won't regret taking the class. Grades easy. Textbook isn't needed, but you have to have the gamebook. You must attend.
Tough grader, especially on essays. There is a lot of homework in the sense that you have to complete 100-500 word "essays" for the key terms in each chapter in addition to weekly discussions and 2 essays. Overall, Powers isn't a bad professor, but she isn't the greatest either. I'd take her again for 1302 only because I know her teaching style.
Do not take this course if you are not prepared to spend hours reading, taking unbelievably long tests every week, and never getting any feedback other than, "It's in the syllabus." I used to find History interesting, but after taking Professor Powers' course I can honestly say if I never have to read another history book again I will be happy.
No tests, mostly we just discussed old newspapers and videos. Was understanding of people struggling with their honors projects, so I'd recommend her if you've never taken an honors class before. Inquizitive exercises were a little frustrating, but easy enough. Lectures straight from the book, so you can always read if you miss a lecture or two.
Her class was way too demanding and required too much effort for a HISTORY class. Don't get me wrong, I understand online courses require a ton of reading and discussion posts but she required more than was necessary. As a full time working mother of 3, this was the only online class I've had to drop. Coworker had her and stressed every day. :(
SUCH AN AWESOME PROFESSOR!!! Love the class and how interactive it was. Im not a history fan but she made it interesting and fun to learn. Highly recommend!!!
Way too much work. She is a tough grader, I wouldn't recommend taking her.
We did not take any test only quizzes on inquisitive there are 15 in total they're easy. We played a lot of debate games but her instructions are confusing. Papers are 500 words every paper I write she tells me my citations are wrong. Turns out 5 weeks into class she only told 1 person how to do them even though she said to do MLA format.
There are no tests, just discussions and other alternatives to typical lecture course. All grades are based on writing & online quizzes (can found on quizlet). Powers is a decent teacher, but grades hard. If you excel/like writing or don't like typical lecture classes, I recommend this course for you.
Betsy Powers was a teacher mainly in name. She didn't do much other than set up the assignments and grade them. (Which was fine by me.) The weekly quizzes are time-consuming but easy; the discussion questions are the same way. The essays are killer but if you stick it out and focus you'll be fine. There is a TON of reading.
Dr. Powers is a great professor, the lectures are interesting and she brings a new perspective to the curriculum. She grades on very few things, her feedback is helpful, and she's very open to any ideas that you have. Attendance is not super mandatory, but you should definitely go for the lecture.
I took the online course and it is essay heavy with emphasis in one subject. Extra reading book, textbook, and exams were all essays. If you like to write then this may be the class for you, but you are not allowed to use outside sources. I still managed to make an A. It was informative, but I am not one that can easily elaborate/rewrite the book.
OMG DO NOT take this online class unless you are ready to write. I am not one who writes well so you can only imagine how I feel. The exams are all written essays and it SUCKS. No late work!!!! LOTS and LOTS of work. GOOD LUCK
NEVER take this class online with this teacher, it requires a lot of time to complete all assignments. It is not necessary the amount of assignments, I have taken other online history classes and they are easier. The summer semester are heavy, I have taken some online classes in summer and this is the hardest, a lot of incessant work.
I took Dr. Powers 15 years ago my 2nd semester of college. It was a HARD class, but I've thought back to her lessons more than any other professor I took at Montgomery. My life has, to a large degree been shaped by it the way she required me to understand history. She challenged me and I appreciate her so very much.
She teaches in a way I've never experience before, using board games and role-play activities to get the point across. Not only are all the students engaged, but we always having fun while learning. She has no tests but instead papers explaining the relevance of the game to history, and all the quizzes are online. Best history teacher ever!
Very difficult History teacher. Inquisitive quiz and 250-word essays per week, not to mention 45-50 pages of reading a week. Exams are essays over the weekend (Opens Friday morning closes Sunday night) PLUS Extra reading assignment/ 250 word papers throughout the semester. Very rude and condescending in her emails. Incredibly tough grader.
Worst professor I've ever had. Do not take this class online. I've always been a good writer with A's/ B's on most papers but all I've gotten from her have been D's/F's. Pay close attention to the opening/ closing times of things where d2l tells you that stuff bc she'll say in an announcement that something will be due on sun. and it'll close sat.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. This professor is rude condescending, and doesn't care to see students succeed. I put in hundreds of hours doing assignments and finished with a C. She will grade your papers harshly, and has no problem failing you. Worst professor I have ever had. Please take my advice on this, she will tank your gpa.
Some work but not difficult
Class is interactive; participation matters. No tests just open book essays.
We played games. There were papers no tests
You won't regret taking her.
There were some lectures but mostly we played games. Roles and boards. Fun but she does make you write, but is an easy grader
Good news: you want have tests. Bad news: instead of tests you have role plays accompanied by multiple mini papers. The first role play involved having the male students belittle the female students in the name of learning about womens suffrage. Triggered my ptsd. Not the class to take if youre shy or have any sense of pride.
Powers online is really not too bad. Every assignment is an essay, and there is a lot of writing involved in the class. She grades accordingly and is always quick to respond to emails. I would recommend this class online!
I wouldn't recommend taking this class if you're not a strong writer, as mostly all of the assignments are essays. This class had a lot of group work, so be ready to speak and engage. It also incorporates speech and a little bit of debate, so if you prefer a traditional, boring, lecture heavy history class, with traditional tests, it's not for you.
Betsy powers definitely is NOT an easy A at all. Several assignments you MUST keep track of very closely. Very time consuming class. All discussions and exams are written essays on the text book. So do not take this class if you dont like to read or write. Although overall pretty difficult, it wasnt impossible. Just keep track of everything.
I took her for a summer class and it was awful. Not only did we have three 750 word essay exams, a 750 word book report/ a 300 page book to read in 6 weeks, we also had 250 word discussions and a 20 question quiz 3 times a week. I put in hours for each exam just to end up with C's. She made me dislike history big time!!
please don't take her class. she makes everything difficult. she treats her weekly discussion like essays. one time I wrote one word in the discussion that was off topic and she gave 66. in the beginning she kept giving me 66 on every single discussion and the discussions were 25% of the grade. SHE WILL FAIL YOU EASILY. DO NOT TAKE HER!!
Professor Powers is not the worst professor I have had, but certainly not the best. Having problems opening a page, and I needed to see what was on it because she quizzes . When I told her my issue her response was basically, the other students are seeing this so I don't know what to do. So if you don't mind having little to no help, have fun simp
I took this class for a 8 week course, but it felt longer because of all the work assigned. Every week there is two inquizitive's and two discussions. On top of that, an essay will be due on almost each weekend. I ended up with a "B" as my final grade and I put my all into my quizzes, discussions and essay's. I would not recommend.
I took powers for 1301 and 1302 the assignments are practically the same every week. The work is always due on the same days of the week. you WILL need to purchase the books. The weekly inquizitives are on quizlet. She can be a tough grader but you learn to adapt to how she grades.
I've taken Prof Powers twice and I would take her again if I could. The workload is heavy, but it is manageable if you get ahead. The test are all essays and there are 4 book report essays. There is also weekly discussion post and a inquizitive or a quiz activity. The only thing is some of her tests fell on holidays like Mother's Day & Halloween.
This professor was probably the worst I've had this semester. She gives no exceptions under ANY circumstances for late work and she grades papers like her goal is to fail you. I've never written so many mini-essays. every week.
easy A
The class itself is alright, pretty doable. However the professor isn't the most helpful or polite. She just expects you to know how to figure out the assignment and know what something means. Her instructions are so vague. 3 exam papers, 2 quizzes per week, and 2 discussion boards weekly. Get ready to write A LOT if you're gonna take her.
This is your sign to NOT take this course with this professor...She grades papers like her goal is to fail you. If you don't want to mess up your GPA, then do not take her!
Okay class; must do the readings but not too difficult.. She uses a free online textbook so that is a plus.
typical class; readings, chapter quizzes, essay exams; took for both 1301 and 1302; very organized
Great class; 8 weeks so you have to work more but easy. Free textbook. Definitely recommend.
Definitely recommend.
terrible, just terrible! RUN!!! she's the worst, she will literally set you for failure on purpose if you are not on her good side...
I took professor Powers for both hist 1301 and 1302 and she was very tough... her grading was harsh and her feedbacks arent positive. There are many essays to write for tests and a lot of reading. she has a lot of rules and expectations. her grading feels like she's trying to fail you, she is a very tough grader.
Class was organized and easy to follow. Basic online stuff, discussions, quizzes and a three exams.
Most of the negative ratings on this site are not true. Some people receive bad grades and blame the professor. This professor was fair and the class was easy; just do the work and you will pass.
She uses a book that is FREE.
The work is a lot of reading, which is due every Tuesday but the chapters you go over and learn about will be taught after you're graded for it? She also doesn't remind us when there are esseys due. Lectures are okay.
No tests; free book; interesting lectures. Definitely recommend.
no tests; attendance helps but not required; recommend this instructor
Very easy A, chapters are extra short and quizzes on chapters are very easy. Every week you will have assignments but they only take a few minutes to complete. Do the work and you will pass. No heavy reading, no heavy workload.
Do the work and you will make a good grade. Nothing too hard; writing but its short and easy.
Not a bad professor; course was easy. Organized and clear assignments.
Would take again; a bit boring but it is history. Writing but it wasn't difficult and she gave good feedback.
Honestly, there isn't a positive thing I have to say about her. Her amount of work that she requires for an online course is through the roof! She has you doing so much every week that it's overwhelming. Be prepared to be shot down and told no if you accidentally miss something. Btw, she's rude!
Takes discussions very seriously, like they're essays. You have to cite even your own words if it was for her. Never gives a good grade and its always a problem with your work. Professors like this take away the joy of learning and wanting to continue your education. It hasn't been fun and you do your work with fear. Don't recommend at ALL.
I wouldn't recommend this teacher she's a strict grader who takes discussion posts and essays seriously and docks points for everything. It's sad when professors make you afraid to submit work. I asked another professor for aid, and they were perplexed too about my deductions on work.
Really good professor. I was nervous at first about the role play, but it turned out to be really fun and informative. Would definitely play again!
This professor's subjective grading made me drop her class. Her unrealistic grading style made this class difficult and just plain awful; I would not recommend taking her. I took the class with another professor and got an A, which further confirmed my belief that the issue was with the professor's grading style rather than my own abilities.
Easy class; you basically just write 5-6 essays during the semester an do in class work. She is an easy grader; if you show up you will pass.
Easy. She makes you write a few essays but there are no tests and the textbook is free.
Really good professor. I was nervous all the class exercises, but it turned out to be fun and informative. Also an easy way to improve your grade. Just show up and you get points.
Good professor. Easy assignments. Mostly written but not difficult
RUN. Thats it. Read this discussion post and RUN the other way. Absolutely TERRIBLE professor and does not care about you as a student at all. Her grading is the worst and will fail you easily for even the smallest or correctable mistakes. So do yourself a favor and DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF FOR THIS CLASS. unless u want a glimpse of h***
This professor falls very short when it comes to teaching. This class is not worth your time. Her grading style is very subjective, feedback is harsh and not helpful when it comes trying to figure out why you're getting low grades, this is very hindering for student growth. Her demeanor has seriously impacted my academic experience for college.
Dr. Powers summer course is so easy, read a chapter, write a 250 word discussion post and take a small quiz do this 3 times a week and 3 essays. the first two were over the chapters you've been reading and she will give you which chapters she expects you to cite and refer to in your essay and the final essay was over another book about slavery
in general this professor is just not good in my opinion very heavy on reading and long monotone boring lectures that you will not really use to any extent the only grades are over essays from the textbook and extremely subjective activities that don't really lead anywhere if I wanted to do only essays for grades I'd take an English major
Easy class; show up and do the in class exercises and you will pass. Most of the class stuff was games or other easy things. She did assign essays for some things but they were not hard. No tests just 4-5 short essays and one final. Attendance is important.
