Pretty good teacher. I've never liked Chem though. She does prepare you well if you follow the hw and practice exams

good teacher
soo dislike her..shouldnt be teaching
WARNING: NEVER take a class she is teaching!!
She's a decent teacher. If you study and come to class, you should be alright on the tests.
shes easy to understand and if you do the homework and show up to class its pretty easy to get a good grade!! i would reccommend her!!!
Don't take a class she teaches unless you can teach yourself by reading the boook.
Good teacher... gives very helpful and easy to understand notes... I didn't have to pick up the textbook once
All she does is scrawl a bunch of examples on the board from notes she has prepared already. she does this very fast and its better if you just teach yourself chemistry from the book
It is better to learn from the book.
She is a pretty good teacher. She uses examples that help you get the problems needed for the test done. Her tests, however, are hard, so be careful when deciding on the correct answers. I do recommend her for this course.
She is somewhat nice, but sometimes she is horrible at concepts, and she is brutal on tests if you make little dumb mistakes.
Good teacher...gives many helpful examples. Quizes and tests are hard...but thats chem for you
Not very clear until the day of the exam, during the review....a little too late I think, avoid her if you can.
I don't mind her. I think she's a good teacher. If you go to class and pay attention and do the assignments she gives you, you can definitely do well. It takes time, but if you want to do well, that's all you've got to do.
Tests are very VERY tricky, but she is a good teacher
Her tests depend on her mood. If she is in a bad mood the tests are very hard. She does not curve and you do not get credit for being in class every day. Even though she assigns setting. Avoid her if you want to pass.
Pretty good teacher. I've done well. Chemistry isn't an easy subject, but she explains it fairly well. Gives detailed notes you can look back, but you have to do the assigned homework to maintain a good understand and grade in the class.
i like her & think she's funny. i'd recommend her
Great
She is a very good teacher. She explains everything well. Compared to her husband she's a real jewel.
The only good thing about this professor is her sense of humor and she speaks clear. I think she is the most tricky professor ive ever had because the questions on the test dont match the questions she gives in class. She gives quizzes every friday too.
Take this class if you like being tested on things you haven't been taught. She likes to explain things the day before the test, and tells you to study things that are NOT relevant to the test material. Crraaaaappppp.
She is a great teacher I would recommend her to anyone
if you want to pass this class take shiekh ahmed. this class was very hard and ratcliff did nothing to assist students. the course is simply useless knowledge of chemisty
Take note of the negative comments in this section. They are the _real_ comments. She is worthless. "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach Chemistry at WVU." My dog could teach the course better than her. Worthless
She was not that bad of a teacher. I think she does a good job of explaining problems. She tends to throw questions on quizzes that have not been taught in lecture because she runs out of time. Otherwise, I would recommend her.
Gives very good notes right from the book and is very helpful whenever you ask for her help. I really enjoy this class and learn alot.
She is very easy to understand. Class isn't too hard as long as you take good notes. Quizzes and tests are fair. She is a pretty good teacher.
she is a great teacher. explains material in easy to learn ways. tests and lab are a piece of cake. plus she teaches 112 too so if you are going on she only teached you what you HAVE to know for 112 (doesnt go into much detail)
horrible teacher...tests are extremely hard...good teacher in class but tests suck.
Alright, all the people who said this professor is great is smoking some crucial sh**. She is the worst professor I've ever had due to the fact that she gets up to the board and writes like crazy then if u manage to copy down the notes she puts something ENTIRELY DIFFERNT ON THE TEST..WHO DOES THAT!
Her tests and quizzes are easy. All you have to do is go to class and take notes. She explains thoroughly everything you need to know. I would definitely recommend her.
Pretty good teacher...was better than I expected
Labs are no joke, take ur time. Do the HW and test and finals are easy. You'll be taking alot of notes, but shes pretty easy goin in class, good fun positive atmosphr. I got an A in the class and failed two labs and 3 quizs.
If you study for class ahead of time, and review your notes, you can definitely get an A. If you have NO idea what's going on..it's a bit hard to understand what she's talking about.
She is unorganized and does not teach the material as well as she should. The students correct her everyday...
Very confusing and not helpful when emailed. Take Dr. Ahmed he is more helpful with chem than Ratcliff. She is so disorganized and tricky on tests. You will have a hard time passing her class.
All you people that complain its probably because you are too lazy to try and learn. If you do your homework problems almost all the questions on the quiz comes from them. you have to try. its not always up 2 someone else 2 make everything easy on you. shes the easiest chem teach you will find @ WVU
Her class is VERY easy if you do the homework, most test/quiz questions come from the homework. Shes extremely nice and will always take time to help you out
one of the most unclear profs. i have had at wvu. She always contradicts her own knowledge and can very rarely answer a question.
Good teacher if you are prepared to work. She does write a lot of notes on the board, but if you keep up with them and study, you should be fine. I failed a few labs and quizzes, got a C on the lab final, but did pretty well on the exams and was able to get an A.
Quizzes come directly from the homework problems and tests are all multiple choice. If you do your work and go to class you shouldn't have any problems. She is a very nice lady w/ a wonderful personality, however she is a little disorganized and sometimes gets confused. She is very enthusiastic abou
She can get a little confused at times, but not too much to make the class all that difficult. Shes pretty nice and she is enthusiastic about teaching. Shes pretty good at explaining things.
sucked!
AWESOME!!! She has lecture handouts and tests right from them. If you have an ounce of common sense, you can easily pass this class. If you don't pass this class... you are stupid. :)
Terrible! Smart but hates the world, and especially college students.
she shouldnt even be a teacher, she hates us
Seems to really want to make sure you understand the material. Not afraid to do problems in class.
Very good teacher.
She did a lot for the class. Tests were sometimes hard. Doesn't Curve! But a very good teacher
Prof Ratcliff is very helpful and a very good teacher. If you ask her questions she is always willing to answer them. She is very nice and always helpful, in and out of class. If you get a choice, take her!
Great teacher, always willing to help, really care about the students unterstanding material
excellent
she is always willing to help you and will work with your schedule to help you recieve assistance with something.
I really disliked her class. When I asked for help and to clarify she told me just to study more - I was already studying about 20 hours for each test. Can sometimes be confusing, you will need the textbook, has messy handwriting. Disliked her alot!
I had her for 111 and 112. 111 was really difficult. The book didn't clarify many issues, and you have to learn the "right way" to ask her for help. If you go in just with a general question, she will just tell you to study more, so you have to be specific when talking to her. Once you get used to her teaching style, she really isn't that bad.
Ratcliff is an awful professor. when she goes over problems in class she will make mistakes constantly and take forever to correct it.
Worst teacher I've ever had. She constantly makes mistakes and teaches the wrong material then ten minutes later realizes her mistakes and has to erase everything. I did all of the extra credit, hw, got and A in lab, studied forever for exams, even tried her peer lead tutoring sessions, and got my own tutor...and still need to retake this class.
A bit scatter brained while lecturing. She gives you a worksheet to fill out as notes for the class, which is both somewhat-helpful and confusing. If you can catch her she is extremely helpful 1 on 1 and will work with you until you understand. Exams seem easy yet there are tricks, be careful. Throws chalk at people who text in class=hilarious!
SHE IS THE WORST TEACHER I'VE EVER HAD. She can't teach, she makes at least 40 mistakes per class. Her tests are hard, she actually had to bump people from D's to C's at the end because she didn't have enough people pass. She SERIOUSLY said that 6+6 was MAYBE 12. Yeah. She is terrible. Take Mingming or ANYONE ELSE. STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS!
She's a nice lady and a good teacher when she tries
Horrible Teacher. I do not recommend her to anyone. She did not know what she was talking about more than half of the time and she always made mistakes. She is definitely a scatter brain. Do not take her. I had to sit in to Mingming's lecture for the final review just to actually learn something.
defiantly WOULD NOT recommend Dr. Ratcliff to any student. made loads of mistakes during lectures. was quick at scheduling office hours, but was of no help to the questions asked during so. made errors on exams. other professors were much more helpful to their students. no idea of the material, couldn't even balance an equation in lecture once.
I feel she knows every thing about the subject but,she does not know how to present the materials. Another thing she does not give your grades back in a matter time. When she talks, you feel she wants you to get out of the class. She does not answer questions clearly at all also she does not care if the students get F or bad grads.
She wasn't as bad as her reviews make her sound. Her notes are quite useful and her assigned homework is an easy A. It's true that she did make mistakes occasionally during the summer session -- but the class was so accelerated [being only 6 weeks], it was hard for anyone to keep up - even her. My rec would to not take chem 116 during the summer!
The class was hard -- but general chemistry is hard. period. It took a lot of studying and the homework takes awhile (but is fairly easy). She provides very useful note packets which are quite nice. I ended up with an A in the class. If you put forth the effort, you will pass - no problem.
This teacher is the absolute worst teacher I have ever had in my life. Not only does she try to teach us things she forgot to teach us thats on the test the day of! she makes mistakes on just about everything...She cant answer anyones questions either. She mostly says just because when she doesnt know the answer. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
hated that class. I dropped the class three weeks into the semester because of her. She is not helpful. She also has a dull sense of humor.
absolutely terrible
terriable teacher. notes are online, print them off and come to class and copy her solutions. A lot of calculation mistakes, the final answer is the only right thing in most of her solutions. When i study for the tests i get confused by the calculation mistakes. took it over summer wasn't an easy class. AVOID HER!
She makes mistakes in calculations a lot, but usually catches them by the time she gets to the end of the problem. She isn't too good at answering peoples' questions; she is easily confused.
She makes a lot of mistakes while teaching But she really isnt that bad!she knows what shes doing. tests are fair & you have the opportunity to bring your grades up at the end of the semester, which helps everyone. U have to go to class and study. She gives homework that is really, really helpful. I would not mind taking another one of her courses.
ABSOLUTELY AWFUL! She doesnt understand what she tries to teach and messes up more problems than the students. She once tried to compare weighing atoms to the Pittsburgh steelers because "you cant weigh em all at the same time can you?" FAIL. DO NOT take this class, you WILL fail
This wasn't my favorite class, but she knew what she was talking about even if she messed up a lot in class. I;m taking her for 115, so I guess we'll see how that goes. I guess I''d reccomend her if you didn't care what teacher you got...
She's awesome! Don't believe what you read, always very helpful and easy to get along with. I wish she taught upper level classes.
This was definitely one of my least favorite classes this semester. I found it to be very difficult to follow because so many mistakes were made by her in class. Many times the students had to correct her. She understands what she is doing but does not know how to convey that through teaching. I would definitely not take one of her classes again.
She is a good teacher and nice lady. She made this class worthwhile for me.
Definitely not the easiest but overall nice enough.
The class was not the bad she was a nice woman and made the class interesting. However, the tests were weeks ahead of the other classes she really likes to cram as much stuff on the tests as possible
she is really really good. but not very good at maintaining our attention span
Betsy is a great teacher, her notes are very well organised. She explains the material very well. And her test are not too bad as long as you do your work
Expect to teach yourself most things in this class. Also, don't expect her to be anything besides condescending if you have questions and actually care about your grade. Exams are reasonable. In lab quizzes are awful but such a small percentage they don't matter. The entire chem dept. at WVU is unpleasant, you just have to suffer through.
I absolutely LOVED her class. I would definitely recommend her for anyone. I would take her for 116, too bad she is not teaching it this fall.
Took this class in the summer. Great teacher, her exams consist of the exact same problems from her notes. She is very reasonable and doesn't try and trip you up with little details, she cares that you are actually learning the chemistry. No book use whatsoever. Highly recommend her.
This class is designed to weed out anyone who doesn't have the desire to dedicate 90% of their life to chemistry. The classes consist of 50 minutes of relentless note-taking at an incredibly fast pace. The tests are harsh and the questions are often trick questions. Homework is a joke. If you don't need to take the course, DON'T DO IT!
Excellent teacher! I was retaking this class from a previous semester and she was totally the better teacher! She explains concepts extremely well! Her tests are totally fair. Just go to class and you are guaranteed a B if you try hard. Totally recommend her... NOT MINGMING..
The absolute worst class of my first semester! She takes extremely fast notes! You can't even try to answer the clicker questions correctly before she shuts you off. ALEKS is just annoying. Her tests are often difficult and impossible to study for with her study guide! AVOID HER. Im retaking chem with Battin next semester
Worst class my first semester. You have to go to class. She doesn't accept the fact she loses a lot of things. ALEKS is dumb. If you took AP chem you'll be fine. I'd avoid rat cliff
I did decently in Ratcliff's class and plan to take her again. Important note-- chem 115 is not an easy class, period. No matter what professor a lot of effort is required and a lot of material is covered. DO NOT miss class it will ruin your grade. Also do the online homework on time, it's an easy portion of your grade if you do it.
I took Ratcliff for Chemistry 115 in the fall and scheduled her again for 116. If you enjoy chemistry and have a decent background in the subject, the class is totally do-able. Her notes are very organized and there are never really surprises on her tests. If you study and understand the notes, you'll do well on the class.
Despite a lot of negative comments, I found Dr. Ratcliff to be one of my favorite teachers. She was quite energetic during lectures and would crack the occasional joke. ALEKS is awful, but you can't pin it on her; it's departmental. Exams were pretty tough, but her class certainly opened my eyes to a true college level course.
I thought Ratcliff was very unhelpful. I went to her office hours a few times during and she was no help. I thought her test were hard and hard to study for. She was no help to me at all. I ended up dropping the class and am retaking it this semester.
Betsy is one of those teachers who could honestly care less if you learn the material or not. She isn't helpful when you attend office hours, she's actually quite rude and rushes you out as if she's got something to do. Notes are useless and Connect is as well. Get a tutor and read the text book! Pray as well.
I really liked Ratcliff. I was able to learn the material well. Just print out her lecture notes and follow along, most questions on the tests are similar in format to her notes. Labs can be difficult as we were behind in lecture and weren't able to do any post labs because we hadn't learned about the concepts yet.
I wasn't particularly fond of Dr. Ratcliff or her method of lecturing. She does have notes on ecampus, but more often then not she messes up the practice problems in class, which just confuses everybody. My best advice would be to take your general chem credits at another school over the summer and then transfer them
Professor Ratcliff is a great teacher. Unfortunately, WVU placed me in 110 as a mistake as I placed higher on my QRA placement test so I dropped before withdrawl period ended. If you do the homework, you will never have a problem on her quizzes. The grading system is weird for Chem 110. I would take her again if she offered the class I needed.
Ratcliff isn't bad but she isn't great either a passable class with a lot of homework and pointless labs
I took this course in 6 weeks over the summer so I expected it to be difficult. I didn't expect for the answer keys on the weekly tests to be constantly wrong. Same with the practice tests. I was working on the final exam practice test and noticed a pattern so I emailed her about the key. 11:00 the night before the final, she posted the correct key
Betsy can sometimes be confusing to some students and make the material harder than it needs to be, but overall I really enjoyed having her as a Prof. Like any chem teacher, she is a tough grader but her clear passion for the subject almost makes me excited to come to Chem class. Attendance is a mandatory if you want to pass the class.
Don't buy a textbook, just buy Aleks subscription online. She is terrible about posting any grades, notes, tests, or responding to emails. Aleks is the worst part of the class its awful and don't get behind on it. Tests are really tough for no reason.
She's not absolutely horrible but she's really not that great. She's very scatterbrained and unorganized. She's extremely friendly, though, so she doesn't seem unapproachable. Just make sure you do your work and go to tutors for help if you need it. Definitely not that great of a professor and would recommend someone else if possible.
Everyone dislikes her because the class is difficult but you have to work for the grade that you want. ALEKS sucks but it's helpful if you use it to your advantage. Her tests are semi-hard but you have to know the material. Don't ever skip class. Don't buy the textbook. Her notes are wonderful. She's scatter-brained but a good teacher.
very unorganized and makes constant mistakes, but she is a great teacher.
She is very unorganized, scatter-brained and makes mistakes a lot. Aside from that, she is a very smart professor. Could do without the constant exam mistakes.
She is often rude to students, and is very disorganized. Sometimes lecture material is unclear. If you can take this from another professor, I recommend doing that. But if you do have to take this from her, study study study and you'll be okay.
She messes up a lot, and her notes make no sense. she puts stuff on the exam she has never taught. I went in asking for help and she was very rude to me. I don't like how she teaches.
Very tough course in general, be ready to spend a lot of your time. Be prepared for the lectures, otherwise they will be confusing. Betsy Ratcliff is a good professor, definitely recommend you. Even though she might seem disorganized, just be patient and do your job. Ask questions, Betsy Ratcliff can greatly explain you a problem.
Spent more time in class trying to tamper with the technology rather than learning. Ratcliff periodically loses her mind. However, she is way better that Bell.
I didn't feel like the lecture was very organized, I learned little from it and everything I learned was from a combination of homework and yahoo answers. When I committed myself to studying my exams were a consistent 80, studying was definitely required. For the final, she sent out a 100 question practice test which didn't adequately prepare you.
Scatter-brained. Majority of class spent figuring out how to use technology. Commonly makes mistakes, won't catch them unless a student does. Lecture consists of filling in blanks on her notes rather than going through enough example problems. Tests are only based on math. Prepare to teach yourself everything. Take every extra credit point you can.
Print out notes meant the lecture had a path, but she could get confusing at times and would also make several mistakes frequently which gets annoying and confusing after a while. Seemed to start off class a lot with 10 minutes of computer issues. She would help if you ask, but sometimes you just leave more confused. Slow grader compared to others
Great Teacher. Ratcliff has all of the notes online at the beginning of the semester, and you can print them off and fill in the blanks in class. The homework, Aleks, will make you learn! Do your homework and stay on top of it, and you will not only get an A, you will have a great understanding of the material years later.
She's a tough prof, but also, she teaches chemistry which is tough enough in itself. She's very willing to help even if she is scatterbrained and needs to catch up with the technology of the 21st century. Love her as a prof.
Very helpful in office hours. Pay attention and the presentation of the concepts makes perfect sense.
Dr. Ratcliff rewards individuals for actively participating in their education. The lecture notes that she gives before class help to make the information received in lecture easier to understand. Homework is a must, but it helped prepare for tests. If you need help in this class do not wait to ask for it.
Not the worst, but not my favorite professor ever. Gives good notes. You'll work hard for your grade, but welcome to Chemistry.
Do not take her as a professor. She is tough and even if you study she will have new uncovered material on exams. She will even say that she is out to trick you on exams. She is no help at office hours. There have been cases of students who failed her more than twice. Do not expect an easy A, honestly be happy if you pass with a C.
She would spend the first ten minutes of class trying to get the technology to work. She would often contradict herself and make mistakes on the board. She was a mess.
Dr. Ratcliff is easily the worst professor I have ever had. When she speaks in class nothing makes sense because it sounds like she is speaking a different language. She is very hard to follow in class due to her lack of explanation. Overall the material is not hard, but she makes it seem hard because she cannot explain the "why" part of chemistry.
I really liked Dr. Ratcliff. She liked to crack jokes during lecture and would stop often to ask for clarity. There were extra credit assignments given throughout the semester. Just go to every class, take good notes, and study the practice exams she puts on her website and you'll be fine. :)
A teacher that was very passionate about her class. She cares that the students get the material, and tries everything in her power to help. She has online videos showing how to solve problems. She may mess up in class a little, but that is because she is so preoccupied with the material that she may fly through some details. She is a GREAT teacher
Ratcliff is Excellent for CHEM 116. The lecture notes are already printed out and she covers concepts/ practice problems in class. She wants to make sure that you fully understand the concepts, which is vital when preparing for the MCAT or other standardized tests. You have to study, but you will understand the concepts much better . I reccomend
At first her lectures seemed all over the place, but once I got used to her, she was not hard to understand. She gives a really reasonable amount of homework especially compared to some of the other 116 professors. She obviously cares about if the students are learning or not and is very helpful if you ask questions outside of class.
Ratcliff is the professor to take for 116. She gives you previous exams as a heads up for what to expect on tests. She may come off as a bit of a loon at first, but you'll get over that quickly. Rather funny during lecture and will crack jokes often. Never had to crack open the book and still understood every bit of the material.
Dr. Ratcliff actually gives you formulas for tests! Anyone who took Battin knows what a pain not having those can be. She's a little all over the place but it's really not that bad. Tests are pretty difficult if you don't study/chemistry isn't your forte.
Betsy is ok professor. She is Better than Ming Ming in my opinion because she has clear notes. I would take her instead of Ming Ming but she doesn't like to give extra credit at all.
A little scatterbrained but teaches through practice problems in class. She won't surprise you with anything on the tests you haven't seen before, either. I think the people that struggle are those who either don't have prior chemistry knowledge, don't study, or a combination of those two. None of the material is especially difficult, as she supplies plenty of practice material and practice problems on her website. Overall, great professor imo.
Betsy is an okay teacher I wish she'd would be a little more accessible outside of class and be more clear on what topics our exams are on.
I struggled in this class and asking her questions did not help me.
Your overall grade is based on how well you test. You have 2 homework assignments a week that range in difficulty, but have 3 tries to get it right. She doesn't explain things well, and your questions won't be answered directly. I would recommend going to her classes everyday and maybe another chemistry group/teacher's class to understand topics.
Definitely an interesting professor, always keeps you awake during lecture. Fair about tests, if you can show her why your answer could be right, can give points back. Doesn't take anyone's crap, especially in lab. Don't skip class, do all the homework, don't just copy and you'll do fine.
I would never take this professor again. I just feel that she taught too quickly and was not very concerned about the students' learning.
You will expect to do homework twice a week, it not make up a large percent of your grade but it help a lot for prepare for test. Test is decent but some time there is a few mistake in formula sheet or question but she will fix it. Not my favorite prof but not bad. She is substitute for my prof half semester.
KInda scatterbrained very good professor
Dr. Ratcliff is a pretty good professor. Yes, she goes fast but she is really good at explaining things. Also, she posts old exams on her website to practice which are really useful. She can be a bit scatterbrained at times, but overall she is a decent professor. Homework is twice a week and the exams are all multiple choice.
AVOID if possible. I went to meet with her at her office hours about a specific topic that we had went over during lecture and she was rude and did not help me. She is all over the place during her lectures and it is difficult to follow her. I do not feel like the material itself is difficult but the way she teaches it makes it difficult.
Avoid if possible not a good professor at all. Her tests averages were in the low sixties all semester. Her teaching scattered and all over place, can't answer you if you question her. One of the worst professors I have ever had at WVU.
Very intelligent and helpful professor. Yes her class is rigorous, yet you truly do understand the material if you show up to class and do the homework.
Definitely had to change my studying habits! This is a course that you have to actually learn; you can't just memorize some stuff right before the exam. If you put in the effort, you can definitely pass this class.
Worst professor in the history of professors. Teaches for ten seconds at a time before a smart student in the lecture has to stop her and tell her she made a mistake in the problem. Teaches as if you are supposed to already know how to do it, and doesn't know how to do it herself. Will mark 8+ questions wrong on exams that are actually right.
work hard/pay atention
One of the worst teachers Ive had at WVU. Avoids students during office hours, has responded to only 2 of my emails, when you eventually get her to speak to you during office hours she is irritable and rude to students. Spends way to much time in class calling out students with phones distracting people who are trying to learn the material.
PSA: DO NOT take Betsy for 115 if you don't have a decent understanding of chemistry. She does not explain things very clear. Also, she lacks interaction with students. Office hours might as well not be a thing. Look for old exams on her website for examples because otherwise you are not going to get any that are similar to the test.
saddle up if you decide to take her for chem 115/116 because your chili ring will never be the same. She doesnt teach well and expects you to know everything. If you go to her for help she basically tells you to go kick rocks because you should already know this. she is the chemistry equivalent of gary ganser in wvu's math department.
A HARD TEACHER. SHE TEACH SOMETHING AND TEST YOU WITH SOMETHING ELSE. HER HW SYSTEM COMPLICATED. DONT CARE ABOUT THE STUDENTS IF THEY HAVE QUESTIONS AND MAKES FUN OF STUDENTS WHO TALK TO HER PRIVATELY EVEN IN THE CLASS. SHE THINK EVEYONE KNOWS THE MATERIALS BUT NO! SHE HAVE NO MERCY. I STUDIED HARD. THINK BEFORE TAKING
This professor has heavy lectures but little explanations. She knows a lot about what she is teaching but is bad at explaining things.
Professor Ratcliff is the worst professor I've ever had. She does not respond to emails about any questions that you may have and even said in class that she won't because it's too much for her. She messes up on content 90% of the time and students have to correct her with previous chemistry knowledge. She is disorganized and rude.
Avoid taking her!!!!! She is the least helpful professor I have ever had. She doesn't help you when you go to her office & she has not once responded to any of my emails. She is a complete scatterbrain & constantly makes mistakes in lectures that she doesn't realize until a student points them out. Her tests are way different than what she teaches.
She was terrible. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. All she does is write things on the board and doesn't explain them well at all. She runs through the lecture and makes it so hard to understand. I would definitely not take any other course she gave. I love science and she ruined chemistry for me.
Probably the worst professor I've ever had. Avoid her at all costs. She is rude to students, makes mistakes constantly, and does not care about her classes. I never missed a class and took down every note and still had a hard time passing. She makes fun of kids who come see her privately and does not answer emails. She is the worst.
Go to class and pay attention if you want to understand the material. Took her twice, failed the first time and got an A the second. Not exactly helpful in office hours, depends on her mood, but one of the better professors if you want to learn and still pass.
Chem 116 is a hard class to begin with. Having Dr. Ratcliff doesn't make it any easier. Her lectures are fast, and she gives little to no time for questions. She is difficult to talk to. Does offer extra credit bonus assignments.
Ratcliff is a mess. Her lectures make no sense at all, one minute she's working out a problem and the next minute she's explaining something completely different. If you have the opportunity to take a different professor I would HIGHLY recommend it. Her lectures did not help me at all in terms of the overall course, the homework is your best bet.
Dr. Ratcliff is pretty funny in class, and I learned a lot from her in lecture. She was really inaccessible outside of class though--I couldn't get ahold of her to schedule a meeting all semester. Her quizzes are also really difficult, but a lot of her test questions came directly from homework. Tests are heavily weighted.
If you're looking for a great way to ruin your life, take this class! There's an overwhelming amount of hw that barely helps you study, but make sure to do them because there will be at least one of the hw questions will be on the test. I studied for 8 hours for the final and knew almost nothing on it
A lot of people don't like her. She is very fast paced and the grade in the course is pretty dependent on your test grades. She wasn't the worst chem teacher but she wasn't the best either. She doesn't try to trick you or give excessively hard questions but the class is still pretty difficult. She is also very homework heavy.
Great teacher but very lecture heavy and does not explain concepts very well. If you learn best by doing examples of questions then this is the teacher for you. She makes her tests difficult but if you study you can get an A or B on them. She is usually available for office hours and can be helpful outside of class if you dont understand something.
She was easy to follow in lecture and was always ready to answer any questions no matter what! She was also easy to get a hold of out side of class
Very attractive, great professor, explains very well, gives a good amount of extra credit.
Took her my freshman year. Regardless of how much of the homework I had worked on, and examples that I had done, it didnt seem to matter when it came to her tests. Her tests were more difficult than they needed to be and frankly worded weirdly. I went to her office hours once and was met with nothing but a demeaning tone and attitude
Attendance wasn't mandatory but not going to class will hurt you. The final and your lab grade is half of the class so try to max out your lab grades. She's nice but sometimes it feels like her lectures don't have very much direction.
Dr. Ratcliff was a little unorganized, however she provided many resources to help learn the material. It was mostly self taught but if you asked her to explain something she would help one on one. She doesn't explain solving calculations very well, however it can be explained in solutions she posts on her webpage, which really helped me.
Took her Chem116 condensed course over the summer. Since this was a condensed version of the full semester we had to move pretty quickly through material and understandably so, the material was difficult. Betsy would slow the class down when students let her know they needed clarification and she made herself available to students daily.
Took this course over the summer and due to the quick pace of classes the material was rather difficult. Professor Ratcliff slowed down to go over material and always made herself available during office hours. She made a point to help each student that showed up to class.
She is really passionate and works hard to explain some of the more difficult topics in chemistry. She provides clear examples that can be followed later during homework. Many students feel the need to point out when she makes small mistakes and it flusters her and she will proceed to make more mistakes. Dont hold it against her!
She is the most unorganized professor I've ever had. And she gets angry when you correct her. She made mistakes at least five times each lecture.
She is extremely unorganized and makes mistakes at least three times each class. She grades pepers incorrectly often and gets mad when you ask her for help.
The class is majorly centered around the ALEKS program to really teach you the material other than that the class was extremely fun. The professor is all over the place in a good way.
Too bad you can't give a zero. Lazy as can be so unorganized. Impossible to reach by email. If it wasn't for YouTube videos I wouldn't have made it. She literally slept in for our midterm and wasted all of our time and the class before that the quiz didn't work online so we had to have a makeup day. So unorganized and unhelpful.
Cannot teach very well. Grading is confusing. Taking tests online are terrible due to the fact that the questions are not displayed correctly. Would not recommend.
Very disorganized. Lectures tend to be all over the place and always messes up questions in class. Often grades wrongly on quizzes. If you have no experience in chemistry, this class will be very hard and you will have to do your own research and find outside sources to help you.
very unorganized. hard to reach. issues with every quiz and test. grading is always messed up. homework cite is messed up.
If you are taking her for CHEM110 you will 100% hate her. Taking her for CHEM117 is different. Her strengths lie much more with teaching advanced students more in depth topics, but has many struggles teaching students that have a weaker grasp of the topic. If you are bad at Chem DO NOT TAKE HER. If you are naturally good at it you will be fine.
If you have her for Chem 110, i would like to formally apologize now. very disorganized, would always have grades entered wrong or answers wrong in the quizzes. Lectures were all over the place, TA's answered m,ore questions than her. would ridicule and call out students who were still learning the material.
Her class is a mess, students are always correcting mistakes on her work, there has not been a single class where she doesnt make a mistake. She goes extremely fast through the material. How am I supposed to learn if she keeps making mistakes and rushes through every single class. Would not recommend
We would be doing 2 or 3 labs at once with barely any direction, so it was easy to get them mixed up and confused. She would assign homework, but it wasn't for a grade. The exams were the only points that went toward our grade. She makes many mistakes on the exams as well, so make sure you go over the graded portion to get some of your points back.
This was easily one of the worst classes I've ever taken. If there were another professor who taught honors chem 115, I would take it in a heartbeat. 100% of your grade comes from exams and they are unnecessarily difficult. Extremely disorganized and there is an overall lack of care for your grades or wellbeing. Left bad taste in my mouth for chem.
I can understand mixed reviews on Dr. Ratcliff, but in my opinion, she's a good professor. She can be disorganized, and the class grade was test-heavy, but Dr. Ratcliff made herself available outside of class, and she cares about students a lot. She gives helpful study materials, too. As long as you attend class and participate, it's a great class.
very confusing lecture, not organized
Her class would've been better if she went through her example problems slower. I would get so confused because she'd fly right through them. She was VERY disorganized. She was also pretty hard to reach outside of class. Aside from this, she was pretty friendly and cared about us learning the material. She also was good about exam makeups.
Would mark answers wrong on test that were not actually wrong. Had to take time in office hours to show her these were correct and would increase my letter grade by at least one per exam. Very hectic lectures that students would often have to chime in and let her know she was doing something wrong.
She's really great. I had her for honors chem 115, and her lectures made a lot of sense. She also gave us good supplementary materials that helped us understand the harder subjects better.
A bit disorganized but fun and passionate. I struggle with chem but she was pretty good at teaching and and reteaching things. Exams are straightforward, always added a few extra points on too. Was more than happy to set times to meet during out of class time for group help. Always do any extra practice exams she puts out!
She really took the time to get to know her Honors class and formed meaningful connections with the students, but she can be unorganized at times
As long as you pay attention to lectures, you will be fine. She is also super helpful if you approach her with questions you have about topics or the lecture.
Before I dropped it seemed the whole class was struggling. She would not explain concepts fully or just not at all then assign homework. If you knew what to google then maybe you'd be able to find a YouTube video to explain, but that's only if she mentioned what topic the homework was on.
She is incredibly unorganized, doesn't know how to use technology at all, and messing up doing problems in lecture constantly and doesn't realize it until a student tells her she's wrong. Her tests are extremely difficult and nothing like the practices she posts. Extremely frustrating professor, worst one I've ever had.
I will be writing a second review when I have finished this class, but please do not take Dr. Ratcliff. She is a very kind woman but a terrible, and I mean terrible, teacher. She is disorganized, confusing, and too fast pace. I got a 100% in CHEM115 and this is my strongest subject, but I can not succeed in this course.
she does not show up to her own office hours or appointments you make with her.she will take days to answer emails if she even decides to.her lectures are so fast-paced and unorganized.she messes up on every problem she does in class and gets irritated if you ask questions or correct her mistakes.her exams are also extremely impossible.
Professor Ratcliff is unorganized and fast during lectures. She omce came in with 5% charge on her ipad so she started explaining on board instead of the notes which was tedious and goes really fast during lectures. Overall, if you want to take her for chem, just be prepared to self study the whole course since her in class lectures are useless.
I'm only half way though the semester with her and I can already tell she is AWFUL. One of the most unorganized people I've ever seen, exams are never on what she says they will be on, and she has to be corrected almost constantly when doing problems. The average for the last exam was below a 60, and 80% of your grade comes from exams.
- little unorganized in lectures and intimidating at first (VISIT HER AT THE CLC CENTER DURING OFFICE HOURS) She is always willing to answer questions. Class: Weekly quizzes, exam heavy (60% of overall grade) PRACTICE PRACTICE all available problems (PSVs) *the exams text very similar skills* ***Talking from experience (last exam got 95%)***
I disagree with the other reviews. Prof. Ratcliff is very willing to bring clarification to any questions, even outside office hours. She gives bonus points on exams and even during class if you participate! She's very nice, homework isn't extreme, and tests are fair with no curve balls. Advice: STUDY! Prof. also provides A LOT of practice material
Worst professor I have ever had. She does not answer emails and messes up your grade and doesn't fix it. also don't bother to set up meetings with her because she won't show up because "she doesn't feel like it". Take anyone else possible that is not her.
Lectures are disorganized and hard to follow along with. However, she has lots of resources on ecampus to study for exams and is very willing to help you if you're struggling. Homework is reasonable, the exams match what she is teaching in class, and she gives lots of extra credit. Go over your exams because there are usually errors in grading!
She is a very disorganized professor. Every single class something would go wrong and she continues to use technology she is unfamiliar with. She gave a lot of bonus points and your exam grade will probably change because she makes so many mistakes and expects her students to find and fix them for her. She seems to genuinely care about her students
Professor Ratcliff is very unorganized and difficult to understand in lectures, she makes even the most basic topics seem really confusing and I often had to teach myself the material. But exams are pretty straightforward if you know the material well and she offered a LOT of bonus points which boosted my grade a lot.
Her notes are guided note sheets that are so easy to follow and fill in the blank. To study for each exam she would give you nearly 50 practice problems on top of 2 practice exams. There were ZERO curveballs on the exams. If you could do the practice problems, then you were fine for exams. I got a 90% in Chem 115, but a 99% in Betsy's 116. Please
I was worried going into the class due to other ratings I had seen. They seemed fairly valid through the first exam, but after that, the class was so much easier to me than what I was prepared for. Definitely be wary for the first exam, it was harder than the final imo, but other than that, pay attention and do the practice and you should be fine.
I have spent the last 40 minutes doing a single aleks chemistry module (out of around 80) in which not only does it have nothing to do with the current lecture, but also is incredibly frustrating because it gives you the same vague explanation as to why you're wrong without actually explaining what to do differently. And this is just one example.
The homeworks are all due before she teaches the lesson. For example, this week (its a Saturday) she said we'd be learning about elements and stuff like that (I don't have class until Tuesday). When I opened my homework that is due tomorrow, it's all on the elements and the stuff she hasn't taught yet.
I'm only a few weeks into the class but already do not enjoy professor Ratcliff. Her lectures are all over the place and she uses technology that she doesn't always know how to use. Lots of practice problems but never explains "why" she's doing each part, she just solves it with no further details which causes me to struggle to understand.
You are better off learning the course on your own. She is impossible to follow and sitting in her class feels like a 6 year old learned how to do chemistry off of YouTube. She needs constant correcting, even on the very basics of chemistry. Bottom line is, she is an awful professor, but luckily chem 110 isn't too hard of a class.
Lectures are scattered, and she does not clearly explain why she is doing something in practice problems. She will often mix up the pages of her notes when rewriting them for class. The SAQ's are not always correct, and do not have the steps to solve a problem, only the answer. We use OLI for online hw and it is a lot of reading and takes long.
Very disorganized; multiple classes sitting because she was unprepared. On last exam, entered the answer "13.0". The answer was "13.00" and got entire question (5 points) wrong. When I asked her about it during office hours, she responded with, "I won't be giving you points back for your mistakes" and was disrespectful. Rude about accommodations.
she was the absolute worst professor I have ever had in my entire 3 years of college. She is very rude and constantly running around with her head cut off. She never comes prepared to class, is constantly making mistakes. She even started giving out 1 point out for correcting her mistakes because she made so many. NEVER TAKE HER CLASS !
Professor goes to fast during lectures and is extremely slow at answering emails.
6 Quizzes total, not terribly difficult but she cannot teach well. If you struggle with chemistry already, do not take her class. Constantly makes mistakes in class and is very disorganized.
Prof. Ratcliff is a great professor. She can certainly be disorganized at times or a little vague when explaining how she arrived at an answer. However, she cares for her students and is willing to help. She also provides plenty of practice material for each exam. If you do the SAQs, quizzes, and watch her videos, you will have no problem.
She is absolutely the worst. The way the grades are weighed means if you fail one test you're basically done for the semester. She is never available for office hours and when she is available she gets mad when you ask questions. Also the notes have nothing to do with the exams. I had to drop because of one exam.
Awful. She makes mistakes during lectures and doesn't explain what she is doing. She gets mad when you go to her office hours and ask her questions. If you do bad on one exam you won't pass the class easily. She is the worst I would not take any class she teaches again.
She grades you on iclickers mostly and doesn't teach you about the questions before but teaches you after she already graded you. She's rude in email replies. She also had us have a week of online class and then came back in person and gave us a quiz that week. don't recommend her class.
If I could give her a 0/5 I would. She does iClicker for attendance but she also made them graded. She would teach you it after you already answered. She is also rude over email. The topics gone over in the slides, during what little class time you have left after she does iClicker for the first 30 minutes, have nothing to do with the quizzes.
This professor for my Chem 110 course has not been pleasant. The lectures are a mess and very unorganized and it seems the teaching is even more all over the place. Online textbook for most work which will help you more than the lectures. Professor certainly had an ego when I went to speak one on one. Doubt she'd help me if I didn't catch her.
Lectures are confusing and disorganized and exams often have very unclear/trick questions. Doesn't thoroughly explain topics & often makes mistakes while teaching the material. Entire midterm grade is exams and our many HW assignments won't be put in until finals. Failing exams in this class = failing the class. Ended up teaching myself material.
poopy teacher
So disorganized, often didn't start class for 10-15 minutes and then did iclicker for 20 minsutes, leaving little time for lecture. Lectures were all over the place and hard to follow. Don't expect a quick or kind response via email. Told us to ask questions and would get huffy if you actually asked questions. Many mistakes on exams and homework.
She can't answer questions in class when asked so she just replies with, "it will be in the presentation," like how does that help? She is very disorganized, especially when she forgot to email just ONE class that she was going to the beach and wouldn't be doing class except on zoom. Which all of us just sat there with no clue. OVERALL AWFUL
I took Chem110, but I liked her class a lot. She was very helpful when you asked questions and her notes were very easy to follow. She gave lots of help and examples in each chapter. People who complain about her either don't take the pre-tests or don't ask for help. This material isn't hard if you fail it's on you. Lots of bonus points also.
For an intro chem class, this course was way tougher than it needed to be. The content itself isn't too difficult after you gain an understanding of it, but the lectures are rushed and extremely unorganized, making it difficult to learn the material.
If you honestly try and put in the effort outside of class you should be fine. The lectures are very fast paced and depending on your note taking device it can be hard to keep up. She does give resources and looking up the topics on youtube you can learn a lot. The lectures are just chaotic and hard to understand right away.
She was an ok professor. Wasnt too hard but
almost made me change my major. actually the worst professor you can get for chem. whatever you can to do avoid having her do it
Had her for the summer class so the material was more rushed, but she did an okay job. Extremely disorganized, never prepared for class, was off doing something else during office hours. Had to teach myself a lot of the material but her examples in class were often helpful to reference during homework/studying for exams. Wouldn't take her again tho
Very disorganized, doesn't answer emails when wanting to talk about grade from midterm. is more concerned that you could see the results than the actual question. doesn't explain anything when in lecture. more focused on using the Aktiv more than explaining in depth about what she is teaching. Do not take her.
Absolutely amazing professor she is very blunt so many take offense to that, but if you can get by that she's definitely worth taking in my opinion. Anyone complaining about certain teachings didn't put in the effort it takes for a chemistry course.
She mid. and goofy
She's super blunt & I was lowkey really scared that she was going to be mean at the beginning of the year. But after attending her office hours & seeing how gracious she is with the students, I realized she for sure has chaotic energy but actually really cares about her students. Definitely be respectful, politeness goes a long way with her.
The class structure is a mess. The grading structure is a mess. The lectures are a mess. Granted, she inherited the class from another professor at the last minute, but still no excuse for her method of lecture. she just does problems and expects “monkey see monkey do”. Bring an ipad for guided notes because she goes too fast for notebook writers.
would not take her again. the content wasn't hard but she complicated it. she also rushes whenever asked a question, its almost like she explains thinking we already know everything even though it's an intro chem class. grading is a big mess and no extra credits given throughout maybe one or two points on one quiz so far. mostly self teaching.
Honestly I really liked this class! If you show up and try, you'll get a good grade. She is always willing to help and answer questions. The people that don't like her are the ones that don't show up or don't pay attention. She does a lot of practice in class and usually gives you time to work on homework in class so that she can help you!
Felt as if she showed and didn't teach how the chemistry skills. She is lenient with grading and assignments. She would give lots of homework for practice every week, often two long assignments. Attendance was a big deal.
I took the online lab course. There were weekly quizzes and homework. The homework often took 1+ hours and included lots of questions and subquestions. It felt never ending.
She always gave sample questions pulled from her quizzes. Attendance was mandatory to get a grade as well as getting the notes. Her homework assignments were very long, often averaging around 60-70questions, they weren't hard however, just time consuming. Overall, she was a good professor, if you need help, don't hesitate to go to her office hours!
I don't know how anyone fails chem 110. The professor provides tons of materials to help you succeed in this class. If you fail, that's your problem, not the professor's. She provided lots of homework and plenty of time to complete it. The homework is designed to help you study. Betsy was a great professor! Go to class and learn, that's it.
The chemistry department at this school is kind of bad. She is a teacher that does honors and normal sections and there is so many tests in this course. there was always an in class section and an out of class section of the exams and 5 exams. Its easy to fall behind and she appears chaotic and not always prepared.
Very difficult to work with. She acts nice but in a condescending way. If you tell her you don't understand instead of being helpful it's “it will click” and when you ask her to go over something again or to explain it differently she just redoes the problem and doesn't change her method at all or really explain well. Not very understanding.
Nice Teacher. Sometimes she felt a little unorganized and she moved class to online a lot. Takes attendance through iclicker.
Professor Ratcliff has been by far one of the worst professors that I have ever experienced. I had to retake her class in the second semester because I failed very miserably the first go around. If you do not buy textbooks outside of the course to teach yourself how to do the problems, you will never get it. Her attitude is a whole other issue.
Exams every other week, 50+ questions on homeworks, doesnt explain things well at all, very unorganized.
The professor is test-heavy with quizzes nearly every class and seven exams in the semester. The fast pace and overwhelming homework made it hard to keep up. When I asked for help due to mental health struggles, she laughed. Her responses to questions are condescending, leaving me unsupported and frustrated.
Lectures are not good all over the place
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. She is unorganized, rude, and careless. She will assign homework that has 75 questions and will only give you 10 points. It is hard to keep up in this class and you are better off to learn the material on your own. It surprises me that WVU allows someone such as her to teach such a complex course. Avoid it at all costs.
Personally, I loved this professor. She is a bit scatter brained but that's just who she is. The tests and quizzes almost constantly were annoying and stressful, although they made sure I actually understood the content. This professor is really caring when it comes to accommodations, and lectures well. She also will answer any question you have.
This class was unnecessarily hard. She expects us to already know everything about chemistry, making lectures and exams tough to follow and study for. Pop quizzes happen every class without warning and count toward your grade. Even when I was in the hospital with the flu and asked to be excused, she refused. this class is brutal AF so be WARNED.
I retook this class twice, and I failed the first time and took a withdrawal the second because her way of teaching is to just show you everything on the board and expect you to understand it. If you have questions, you have to schedule a time with her during office hours, which can be hard to make when you have a packed schedule like I did.
Ratcliff gives you notes to annotate and tells you what to write on them. This class is not hard, you just have to pay attention. Meeting her in person is not scary despite her outward demeanor. She is so kind and honest.
Terrible. Didnt teach anything at all. Quizzes or tests every week, homework every week. Got her OWN practice problems WRONG multiple times.
Professor is intelligent and cares about her students. Every opportunity to succeed is given.
Exams differ from what's taught in class, and the guided notes don't help with homework or exams. AKTIV is hard to navigate and learn from. The professor often changes explanations, doesn't reply to emails for months, and grading is frequently inaccurate or delayed.
You learn a unit move on to next but have homework on next units material while u quiz on last weeks material but the test is on the old material you learned weeks ago. It's impossible to learn this way. You have to teach yourself if ur good at that fine but I was not. It's just confusing playing catch up on old stuff while learning new.
You get guided notes but have to pay attention and study. The material isn't difficult but she is rude and has way too high of expectations.
