Really tough class. She is way too intelligent for GRCC. She teaches the class like you are at Harvard. Take her if you want to learn something, but you will work extra hard for any good grade.
Sometimes she had me thinking that I was in BI 999.
Very hard. She is not nice and she teaches like she doesn't know what she is talking about. She always has to read off of her notes. I did not like the way she taught. You had to be a Grad student at some big school. Not a bio 101 class.
Really hard. Nice teacher though. Her lecture is a little too boring, but you'll learn a lot. She teaches more than what's in the text book, so be prepared. If you miss a little bit of info on the test, you get marked down.
She is exceptionally difficult. Doezema is knowledgable and informative but interacts minumally during class time.
She doesnt explain the material very well and doent like to answer questions.
I learned the most in that class than from any other science class I ever had in high school. Yes, she's tough, but she knows so much that to try and teach everything that she knows would be impossible. Take her if you want to learn.
Cannot ask questions, don't even try b/c she WILL make a HUGE deal about it. Extremely boring and not friendly at all. She always make you stay late. I think she hates her life...
I had her for Biology lab and found her to be a very nice person, although her quizes can be hard. She wrote the lab book herself, so you'd expect it to be an good utility to review for her quizes...not always true.
Hey, take this class if ya wanna catch up on your sleep. This lady is very boring and very difficult. I have 130 credits and have only recieved 1 D in my life and it was in her class. The D was result of 50% of grade coming from diff. teacher in lab class
Assigns more than she has time to go over. Lecture always runs over. Very hard grading and not enough explanation. Lab exams and in class exams very hard. The guy with the highest grade in my class dropped. Bad breath ALL the time. Don't recommend.

worst teacher ever!! doesn't answer questions. gave class unrelated busy work. lectured on things that contradicts what the book says and then tests on what she thinks is right and sometime what the book says was right... don't take her!!!!
She's a nice lady and cares for her students, but as far as clarity goes don't count on it. Getting a clear, basic down-to-earth-so-you-can-actually-understand answer is just not possible from her. Good luck.
I have her for lab and she is a really nice lady. Its a hard class though so be ready to be challenged. She is very knowledgable and willing to help any time.
She talks too long, doesn't know how to explain anything, cold hearted, doesn't realize how terrible she is. DONT TAKE HER CLASS! my class started out w/35 went to 11. too much detail.
She really knows her stuff and is happy to help. You can tell she enjoys what she does which is very important. It is possible to do well if you study. She if very fair, how could it not be fair since she grades on a curve.
This teacher is very detail oriented, be willing to spend at least 2hrs a day on just this class. Test very hard. This class isn't fair compared to the other BI 101 classes. She grades on the CURVE, but if their is a person who does well, your screwed! Trust me their will be.

She is very thorough with her lecture, however that meant that she never had enough time to teach everything. She gave only three tests in which the majority of the kids would fail AFTER the curve. Expect to work hard without seeing the results of your hard work.

Hands down worst professor i've ever had. Over 70 credits under my belt and this was the first class i've ever dropped. She went to Harvard and teaches this class like that is where we are at. Helpful in lab, but rude in lecture. Since i need this class I'll be taking it at Grand Valley.
Well... I am a straight A student, and she is the only teacher i really do not like. I got a C in her class. She is a terrible teacher. I would rather get kicked in the balls 20 times than take her class. Consider this fair warning... if you take her class you will be sorry!!!!

She is a nice lady but theis class is just too hard. She doesnt clarify everything she goes over and the tests are very hard. She expects you to know everything she knows and thats the worst thing about the class.
Ridiculously hard and unfair teacher. The material was not hard to learn, it is the way she lectured then tests us on the tiny details that made this semester very stressful for me. I could go on and on, but most importantly, I can honestly say I didn’t learn a damn thing in her detail oriented joke
Covered half the material listed in her syllabus b/c of so many detailed topics. Let students stay late to finish exams if they had time which was unfair to those who had class right away. This class was not worth all the time, money and stress that I put in to trying to succeed! Don’t bother!
Has a way of making a good/smart student feel like the dumbest person on earth. We deserve better than this!
personally didnt think that she was a real good teacher, the class shouldnt of been that hard but she made it harder than it needed to be.
Class is not for the lazy! If you are just looking to get by DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. Yes the class is hard, and it does require work (God forbid you are in college), but the payoffs are very rewarding. You will LEARN in this class!!
the way she grades tests is ridiculous. she'll take points off for no apparent reason and with no explanation. she's a pain in the ^(&!!

wow! the material is similar to 101 only more detailed. however, this was by far, the worst, most horrible teacher i have ever had. she taught at Harvard and got fired from GVSU b/c her tests were too hard and no one passed them..your grade is based on tests, which are so difficult, and only a few people pass them
I recomend not taking Doezema, she enjoys a students failures and does not allow time for any questions during lecture.
She means well and knows her biology, but expects too much for an introductory class (she teaches at a graduate level instead). I've never worked harder for a grade in all my life and I've been around the block. My honest advice is to take this class with a different proffesor if you care at all about your GPA.
Bette is the worst professor. I remember when I raised my hand in class to ask a question and she just ignored me. Bette mentioned there is no time in class to ask ?'s. She doesn't care about her students. I went for help in the biology lab but no matter what I did my grade wouldn't go above a C-. I am a straight A student but not after her class!

This is the first class I have ever dropped and I do not regret it. Tests are ridiculously difficult, so you're basically expected to fail. No recommendation whatsoever. Doezema=Failure.
She is a HARD grader, she looks for very specific answers. BUT, I have taken several biology classes since her class, and now I thank her. I found that my study skills have improved, as has my eye for detail. You will work hard, but if you plan to go on into higher sciences you need to know these things.
Tough class, not for whiners or the lazy...If you are planning on going anywhere in the field of biology/medicine, etc., why would you expect or want it to be easy? If you want to learn from someone who knows what they are talking about, she is good teacher. To all you who failed or dropped...quit whining, you're not in high school anymore!
This is the worst professor to ever walk the planet! I had her at GVSU and her tests are ridiculous...out of 50 students, only 3 got an A..and 90% failed or were smart enough to drop out. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TAKE A CLASS FROM HER!!!!! I am dead serious, she will ruin your acaademic career. Horrible professor.
She is very hard to follow and covers thr material so quickly that it it impossible to keep up. We started with 24 students and only 10 finished the class. I never dropped a class before this one. Her exams are impossible and she is a really tough grader.
I am a B student and I had to drop this class. She expects so much from her students and goes into great detail. She started new topics at five min. till the hour and always held us over five to ten minutes. When I withdrew, there were only about ten students left. I knew I should of taken everyone elses advice and just took it at GVSU...
SHE may know the material, but WHO CARES..she CANT teach it!!! WORST teacher I have had- beware!!
She is very tough and wants you to go the extra mile. Out of 18 students-just 7 left. If all options are out-then take her, but it is a 10-50 chance of success.

She is the worst prof i have had yet. At first i figured if i worked hard enough i would get a decent grade. That is not the case with Doezema. It seems as though she enjoys failing people. Over half my class dropped half way through the semester because they were failing! Duel enroll at Grand Valley because she is the only prof that teaches this!
Should be a 400 level class in regards to the amount of lab work and testing requirements. All essay answers on 4-6 chapters.

Come on People. In the beginning of class she tells you to rewrite your notes and include additional notes from the book - if you do this and study you will do fine. If you just study your notes don't expect anything above a "C".
wow..well what you have to realize with this class.. lectures are close to useless! The material in what she goes over in class is nothing compared to how in-depth the tests are. When this class starts it seems like it will be an easy class because the information seems easy but if you arent studying a few hours daily you will not pass this class

if you don't have to take Bi 151 i think you are really lucky. this class is there to make you fail.
Test questions are all essay answers and they need to be in her words, exactly what the notes say. At the end of the semester, only 10 students or less were still attending class. Originall there were at least 30 of us.
Worst teacher I have ever had in my 21 short years of life! Doesnt go over anything that will be on the test, isn't helpful at all! You might as well teach yourself. This woman is nuts! If you get her, get the hell out of there!!!
She deff. knows her stuff and expects you to know it as well. Deff. need to read and understand notes and chapters. If you need help don't ask her b/c its useless, she doesn't care. Its a super hard class with a large drop rate, my opinion is take this course at another college it you can.
I've never dropped a class until she came along. If you don't know the material before taking the course, your screwed! I would HIGHLY recommend taking this class elsewhere! Don't waist the money on taking this class with her
This class is hard, but it is not the end of the world. If you want to learn the material this class is great, read the book listen to the lecture, rewrite your notes and it is fine. Also the labs are a lot of fun.
This woman is completely unrealistic in her expectations. I have an entire notebook of notes before the first test. She said we need to rewrite our notes so they make sense; I thought making sense was her job. She's tenured so she can do whatever the heck she wants. Her tests are all essay and cover at least 6 chapters. horrible prof. don't take.
I am a straight A student, always have been, but I am struggling to maintain my C right now. She with not answer yours questions, she will mark you down for anything possible, and she is the most compulsive teacher I've ever had. I drew entire ATP cyle, Got marked wrong. It was exact, except I wrote "for" instead of "from". B.S.
Very nice woman.Final grade are determined by lab+exams+ quizes.Wouldn't be a problem if she wasn't such a hard grader!She will mark you down if your answer is not in her EXACT words.You can ask her a question but won't get much except for what she just gave you for notes.Not worth risking GPA at a 100 lvl class when you can take it elsewhere!
This teacher is SO bad!!! She has the worst teaching style ever and needs to stop teaching! I dropped the class because I was not going to let her class screw my 3.9 GPA!! Go take the class somewhere else!! Don't waste your time and money! She assumes everyone spends 24 hours a day looking over her notes and worshiping Biology!
I am her current student. I will be done in about a week. Prof. Doezema, is a very intellighent, knowledgeable, and strict teacher. Her notes are great. She will help you %100 with any question you have, if you approach her in her office. My class was one hour/three times a week, so there wasn't really much time to ask questions.
I am currently in her class and let me tell you, this class is messing with my serenity outside of the college. Over head notes are out dated and remind me of high school. Power point is an amazing invention this professor has not cought onto yet. It is extremely hard to stay engaged in lecture because of the lack of stimuli. Spare yourself!
She is a nice person. 4th week in her class at this moment. Haven't taken the first quiz, but nerveous about it. There is lotz of information and I'm not sure what she wants for answers yet. I really don't like that she doen't use Blackboard. Lotz of note taking, my hand hurts after her class every time.
Horrible teacher!!!!!!!!!!Avoid having her as your teacher!!!! Very hard grader, unless you work on her class information all day long, everyday it is hard to pass with a good grade. Bad teaching method - all you do is write the notes down - no time to prosess the information, because of excessive notes. My hands hurt from writing non stop.

I disagree with some of these posts, Doezema isn't a bad proffesor at all. She is teaching a difficult subject and if you do not study don't expect to pass. She knows what she is talking about, we just aren't in highschool anymore kids
Just got back my first test, unbelieveable because most of her grading is abour presentation, I took this class to learn about cellular and molecular biology not writing !!!!!
Unbelieveble !!! Just got my first test back today, In a BIOLOGY class I got graded for my writing skills, I didn't know this was an English Comp class, avoid it if possible
She is a hard teacher. But she knows what she is talking about! I started out hating this class, but when I was done I was so glad to have taken it! If you aren't gonna put in the work then you might as well drop now. Work hard on the lab notebook, it will give you a better chance.
She's a great professor. Really nice and explains herself right. Only problem is that you have to turn in a paper every week and keep your notebook up to date or else at the end of the semester you will be scrambling to get it finished. She looks for grammar on her tests, so you could say if you got a word misspelled she will mark you down for it.
Class is extremely difficult. Graduate level work expected in a 100 level course at a community college. Very intelligent,helpful professor. Maybe just too high of expectations for given class.
I learned so much from her in my bio 151 class. i am not going to lie, she is a very tough grader. She is retired now, but I am glad that I was able to test myself in her class when she was still around.
Class very tough expects a lot and teaches Human Genetics like a Phd course incredible. Took class in 06 had a "D" letter grade and again in 07 was a "B" student but ended up with a "C" grade because final exams took 2hrs and was scheduled on same day I had Organic chem. Worked so hard for nothing. Lectures boring and difficult to understand. Run.
This was the hardest class I have ever taken. I now have a 3.5 at UofM but I got a D+ in Doezema's class. You have to memorize the lectures and book. This should be a 12 credit class by itself. Take it if you are intensely interested in the topic and dislike free time. Don't take it if you want a typical 100 level intro bio class.
She is the worst teacher I've had at any Community College. She expects too much out of the students. She doesn't teach the material, she just gives it to you. My textbook could do that. I was better off reading the book and teaching myself then listening to her talk.
