If you have to take CIS, take it from Bair
Says she has 17 years exp, often seems clueless, gives wrong information
cares whether you get it or not, but tests are hard
No Comments
This instructor actually seems to care whether her students are learning.
Lectures are actually interesting
No Comments
Tests were harder than the lecture would suggest

She did a good job, and it was very nice to have a female CIS prof.
Doesnt know her stuff. Makes a lot of instructional mistakes, which the students then have to correct.

DONT TAKE HER...STUDENTS KNOW MORE THEN SHE DOES
not bad, not great. nice woman - pretty tough subject matter to make interesting, though
I thought she was tough, but a good teacher. Willing to help and move at a pace that is comfortable for her students.
Great teacher, explained everything thouroughly - which helped a lot with assembly language and such. And she's VERY willing to help students
very very strict grader, very little partial credit given, no curve or extra credit given
Boring lectures. Unapproachable and unwilling to cut students muchslack. No curve at all, no extra credit, and huge amounts of points deducted for simple mistakes.
Horrible teacher. You think you understand it and can do homework problems, but then you take the quizes and you get so much points taken off for such stupid reasons. No opportunity for extra credit at all. Makes students feel so stupid when asking ques

Gives out more As and Bs than any other CIS200 instructor. Twenty years in industry and really knows applications. Still excited about computing, too. Available for student appointments outside of office hours.
This course is hard if you miss a lecture but the in-class practice and prof bair's explanations really helps a lot. Sit up front, too. The room is huge and you get very sleepy in the back.
extra credit? this is college. I appreciate when I don't have to compete with whiners who think grading is a negotiation. good teacher, no surprises, do the work and get through. cripes.
CIS 200 is very time consuming, especially the labs. However, if you go to class, you don't have to study much outside of class. The midterm and final were a bit hard, but overall the class was easy.
No slack in grading. Prelabs are forever long. If you can transfer the points from somewhere else, do it.
She was a bit clueless at times esp. with her grading of project assignments. Good attitude though and I did enjoy the class more than most that I have taken here at OSU.
Nice pacing of class. Work is incremented each week, not dumped on you all at once. Grades only 2nd drafts, so comments made by grader on 1st drafts may not fit with what she wants. Personable. Interesting class.
She was a very good teacher. Probably the best in CIS 200 level. Reccomend getting her over any others.
Very thorough in her lecture discussions and very helpful & available when it comes to providing help outside of lecture. She also has a very cute smile.
Easiest class I have taken so far was her CIS 200 class. I agree with the person who said cute smile, and beyond that she teaches the subject matter very clearly and seems to just wrap you into what CIS is all about. I highly recommend!!
She taught the class well and made it easy to understand, although her quizzes seemed to be a week to early for me everytime. She had a pretty nice bod for being well into her forties.
She's a great teacher who knows what she's talking about. She's very good at explaining the material, and I would recomment her over any other CIS instructor.
Cis 200 is the most boring class I have ever taken in my life. I fell asleep in lecture every day and i was still able pull of a b+. As long as you stay awake in class you should be fine
Bettina is an interesting professor that will keep you awake. I agree with others that there is an issue between what the grader wants and what she expects on the final draft. Exams were fair and came strait from the books and notes.
a very boring class. she did not seem to know much about what she was teaching outside of what was on the slides, and was not helpful at all when looking for advice on the actual project.
Not a bad prof, class is lotta work
Unpleasant woman. Grumpy and hateful, asked a question about a quiz and she ripped me. Dont take this class if its not required.
This has got to be the easiest class on the planet. Hello? Excel is not rocket science. If you have trouble walking and chewing gum at the same time, maybe you should try CSE 101. Bair shows a lot of patience with stupid and repetitive questions from students and she answers email day and night.
Don't have to attend class, you can just read through the cop-ez packet because it contains all of the slides. Tests were semi-hard, but if they didn't try to make them difficult everyone would ace the class. Take this teacher instead of Debby Gross! (Debby Gross is hard)
ok.....
Just average...the material is easy but she makes it very boring somedays. The TA's are the worst I have ever seen because they do not speak english and make you feel like a dumb ass for asking questions. Although the computer room is always open to help and they do a great job.
The class just flat out sucked, not easy, hard quiz which half the stuff she never went over. **** it was the easist class ever. THE CLASS IS A WEEDOUT CLASS! Seriously take mallon
The most annoying teacher!... Do not have her as your professor!
class material was easy - tried to make class challenging with the quizzes and tests requireing specific answers - annoying. conditions during midterm not consistent with other professors of the same subject.
Very good teacher

Awesome teacher and class! I learned so much in this class. Bettina is awesome, and really cares that you understand the material.
She is really cool! The course is interesting. I recommend taking her for 616. There is a quarter long project, so take the class with friends, she lets you pick people who you want in your group.
Class had too much structure. Treated everyone like they had never seen a computer before or were an expert. No middle ground so you were constantly bored or stressed. I could not work at my own speed.
Very helpful and interesting. She really tries hard to communicate the material in a helpful way.
Assembly language classes are not supposed to be interesting, yet this class was one of the few I consistently enjoyed. I got an A- due to low exam grades, but that could have been improved upon if my attendance had been a little better. Her anecdotal references to past programming experiences always kept class fun, and I felt her pace was good.
Very helpful both in and outside of class. She also seems to strive to make the class interesting.
Simple class if you follow instructions and do all the pre-labs. The tests can be hard because using a program and showing your ability to use them on paper is different. Just do all the practice tests and you'll ace this class.
Very charming, down to earth instructor. Very cool. Will answer e-mail day and night. Good instructor who keeps the class entertained. Very willing to help students in office hours and in class. Very straight forward exams. Will not answer homework questions directly, but will give similar examples to the homework. Thanks Bettina.
Not an easy class, must make time for it to learn the new concepts. As far as Bettina is concerned, excellent teacher with a good heart, I admire her work, wish I ran into her for earlier classes, could have made my experience better. Anyway fair minded and then some, the university needs more people like her,and if I may, she is a beautiful woman.
Very cool instructor. Helpful too.
Hard material to grasp in a short time, but she has fun activities and stories and warns/reminds you up front about tough topics. Hope she teaches 560
Bettina was a fair teacher. The course itself was very challenging and she did a good job of explaining things. Attendance was not mandatory for this class, but it is highly recommended as you miss a lot of information if you miss.
Bettina is nice and very personal. She's helpful, will answer all your questions, and is an excellent orator. The class material is pretty simple, unless you absolutely refuse to pay attention in class, or suffer moderate brain damage.
she is very nice instructor and helpful big time in her office hour , i wish if she teach all cse courses.
Easily among the best professors in the CSE department. The lectures were entertaining and well planned out. She is incredibly helpful in her office hours and willing to help the students as much as possible. If you are taking 360, take it with Bettina.
Loved the class although time consuming. She warns everybody of that on day one. However, topics are very applicable to real world
A very challenging class, but Bettina did a great job of keeping it interesting, well organized, and she was always quick to help/respond to questions.
generally meh...lots of focus on specific languages
Worthless!!! She had no concept of what was going on with this court. She rambled about buzz words and tried to link topics that had absolutely no relation to one another.
Pretty easy for a CSE class, more like a business class. You have to put in a decent amount of time working on the project but the tests and the homeworks are pretty straight-forward. Much easier then her 360 class.
I just don't understand assembly code at all, but Bettina's enthusiasm really helped. Although I'm still bad with assembly code, taking 360 with Bettina is probably the best option.
Better than pretty much any other CSE instructor you could get.
Bettina is a good teacher who explains things well and has a good sense of humor. Take Bettina if you're going to take CSE 221.
She is one of the most worthless prof I have even seen she knows what she is talking about but she basically refuses to answer any question or she just tells you that you have to figure out for yourself do not take her at all.........
Material was difficult and challenging. Homework was lengthy and challenging. Bettina explained most things pretty clearly but a few topics she hardly discussed at all - especially with the calculator project and html projects. Doesn't go over exams or homework at all - expects you to figure out your mistakes.
Terrible class to take w/ Bair. You read a lot and she doesn't actually teach anything at all. Class days are wasted. Learn to write small for the cheat sheets and hope you get lucky writing exactly what she looks for. The exams are terribly worded and she will not admit it. Class is structured horribly. Material easily learned w/ an internship.
It was an easy class, she explains the material clearly. There is mandatory attendance because of the worksheets in each class but those help you to learn the material, and you only need half of them. I would recommend her for this class
I have never had a professor care so little about their own presentation of the class material that cares so much about your presentation of what you have learned. There is almost nothing to gain from taking this class except basic knowledge of deprecated software design patterns.
I enjoyed her class. The material, being a lower level course, wasn't difficult and attendance wasn't mandatory so I ended up not going often, but she was very helpful when I did go. Character-wise, Bettina seems to be the motherly type, but is surprising impersonal. Still very helpful though.
Bettina is a teacher with much passion in teaching. CSE 2221 is a fundamental course for CSE students and she can make you love your major at the beginning. The course is a little hard for me but very enjoyable with Bettina. By average 2 homework and 1 projects a week. 2 midterms and one final. Not a easy class but put your heart and you will enjoy
Class average is probably a C+ or a B-. I picked her because she doesn't care about attendance. All the notes and slides are online, and with her, attendance is optional. Her lectures are pretty average, and but she does explain stuff pretty well and stays after class a lot.
she doesn't care
Attendance is optional, but as long as you show up you will be fine. One of the good CSE profs.
Good professor. Made a dry subject somewhat entertaining.
Bettina can be condescending and have a very dry, sarcastic type of humor -- which can be intimidating. However, I think she does want to help students and if you are willing to come to her. I never really did though, I just sought help from the TAs as well as Piazza. Do your homework assignments. Make it to class.
Don't be mislead - this isn't really a CSE class, it should be MIS. She gave conflicting info on expectations for docs and presentations, graded based on arbitrary decisions, punishes a whole team for one member's failures while refusing to step in and deal with the problem members, and so on. Says one thing, grades you based on another. Avoid.
Fairly straightforward class. Group project is worth a ton of points so keep up on it. Tests are more difficult if you don't study the terms but they are only worth a small percentage of your overall grade.
Can be a bit condescending at times but is overall a very clear lecturer. You can tell that she's been teaching this course for a long time (and early on she was probably very enthusiastic about it but now just seems tired). The difficulty of grading depends entirely on your graders; mine were super nitpicky about everything. Overall, good class.
She can be a little sarcastic but besides that she is helpful. There is nothing too challenging in this class if you do the work.
One of the better CSE professors, but everything is relative. She has a dry sense of humor and is sarcastic, so that may rub you the wrong way. Additionally, this class focuses basically on straight memorization, and the class requires a huge group project that takes up a ton of time. Be ready.
In class, I would not recommend you to ask questions, because she may answer it while she embarrass you with her sarcasm. Also, criticizing her would get her angry, and you will be the one to apologize. Other than that, I think she is straightforward and clear, but tough on grading. Make sure you spend an extra effort on projects.
Bettina Bair is a wonderful person and teacher. Her lectures are very easy to understand because she conveys the material so well. She is very down to earth and easy to talk to. The class itself is not very difficult, though it can be frustrating at times due to the structure of the course. You slowly work on a group project the whole semester.
Must go to class because worksheets are graded (and graded fairly harshly too). Her slides are kind of unorganized and the semester-long group project is kind of vague in its requirements but all that aside Bettina really knows her stuff and teaches it well. She's also pretty funny. Her exams are very fair. Would recommend.
Professor Bair was great for databases! Her humor may be described as sarcastic like other reviewers have mentioned, but if this bothers you, you need to remind yourself people joke in different ways. I thought she was very funny. She was always eager, yet fair, to help any student with a question and very knowledgeable about databases.
Her grading system is ridiculous. The course itself is easy, but she just makes it harder. Also, she doesn't really answer questions properly. Her sarcasm can get offensive sometimes. Avoid if possible.
She is a really nice person and an experienced person in the CS business. However, I do not think that she is fit to be a college professor. She just makes the lecture more complicated and grade tough just to make the class harder. But I like her personality. She is so funny.
Terrible teacher. This is supposed to be a class for beginning coders, but she "teaches" like we should already know the material. Homeworks are due before you learn the content, and the book is nearly impossible to understand. If you have zero coding experience, I would not recommend Bettina Bair. She does provide the link to the textbook, though.
She doesn't care about anything and just makes the class harder than it is. The worst professor I've had in OSU
She doesn't give a grading rubric, so be aware! She just takes off point from tiny thing. She is pretty sarcastic, but not funny at all, sometimes even offensive. Think twice before choosing her.
She never gives a rubric, and doesn't answer questions nicely. She is basically very rude. I was only able to pass this course by using google sources.
She's lazy, doesn't care if you do well or not. Will give 70-80% multiple choice just so it is easier for her to grade. In class activity and group projects can be a pain as well.
She is very careless. She just talks about the slides and doesn't want to answer the questions. She doesn't know how to grade projects. She doesn't have clear grading criteria
The best prof I've had. Has a lot of real world experience and actually cares. She does not do research, her priority is teaching you. Her jokes are hilarious and never offensive as some had said, very friendly. The class is hard but she is probably one of the easiest profs for it. If she is selected for your section congrats, you won the lottery.
She is, without a doubt, extremely smart. But she cannot teach at all. All she did was read word for word on the slides that was given to her. Every now and then she would use her pointer to emphasize something she just read.
One of the worst professors I have ever had at OSU. Her sarcasm and her "funny jokes" would prevent students from asking questions. She never really "taught" the class because all she did was read directly from slides the CSE department had. She never had a grading rubric for our programs and her reasoning for lost points were vague. Avoid her.
Bettina is a seemingly nice person, but don't be fooled. I went to office hours asking for help cuz I was struggling on projects, she looked at my grade said "yeah you're not doing too well" and left it at that. Her ta's grade harder than most other ta's on projects so expect worse grades than other classes. She is NOT a forgiving person.
Exams were (much) tougher compared to other software 1 professor exams.
One of the best software instructor available at OSU. Her lectures are best quality among other instructors. Her slides cover the material very well and gives lots of hints for homework and projects. Study over slides, do not skip classes, and you will do fine.
Read the book and do the in-class assignments. Don't try to skimp out on anything and you won't even need to go to office hours to understand the material since the feedback on the in-class assignments are so thorough. The material was extremely boring to me but that is up to personal taste mainly.
Not the worst tbh. Lectures were tough and homework were ambiguous in my opinion. She tries to be helpful. She's also super feminist lol be cautious.
I really enjoyed having her in class, she is quite sarcastic which i thought was funny and really knows her stuff. She will respond very well to you if you put in the work to do well, but she will be tough on you if you're slacking. Overall she really cares about her students and wants to see you all do well.
Bettina could be a bit snarky and sarcastic/blunt, but she did a great job of teaching and keeping students engaged. The labs are a MUST DO, even though they weren't mandatory they helped a ton with homework, exams, projects. On the projects, make sure you follow ALL of the guidelines and when in doubt, ask the teachers on Piazza for help.
Her lectures are quite dry, and her exams are unnecessarily hard. She can get a little annoying when you talk to her.
If you get Bettina, you've won the CSE lottery. She really cares about her students and wants you to succeed. She gave us opportunities for extra credit, which she wasn't even scheduled to do. No reading required. Super knowledgeable, and really funny. Exams were fair and easy. If you pay attention in class and do the work, you should be fine.
Professor Bair gives amazing lectures and is willing to help out each one of her students. If there's something wrong with your code, either her or her graders are very good at giving suggestions to your code. Make sure you pay close attention to all of the project criteria otherwise you will be marked down. Overall a great professor.
The class is fairly standardized but she does midterms and finals instead of quizzes which honestly is better. She also offers extra credit on the final which is amazing. Otherwise she is very accessible outside of class and responds to all emails. Lectures can be boring since she moves fairly slowly but otherwise she is great.
Software is a hard class. No matter who teaches it, you're gonna have to work hard for it. Dr. Bair gave great lectures and seemed to genuinely care about her students. She's crazy experienced and kept things lighthearted. But this is not a class you can slack off in. Work hard and you'll get a lot out of it.
Not the best professor to take software I with as there are better ones that will make your life easier, but I'd say she's quite average.
Switched over to her section in the middle of the semester because my old professor had to leave. She did not explain anything to the students transferring and had a different method of grading. Terrible overall and I would avoid her.
Disrespectful, unhelpful, and condescending. I had asked for studying and test taking advice after doing poorly on a midterm. I also asked if there was going to be any extra credit or curve at the end of the semester. She replied with directing me to SLDS if I think I have a disability for extended time on future tests. No other advice or help.
Horrible, terrible, mean, and does not care about you as a student or person. Will never recommend this professor to anyone. If you have her, DROP IMMEDIATELY. If I could give this professor a 0, I would.
