Eye candy... but she makes the simplest concept seem difficult.
Brutal, brutal prof. Worst class I've taken at UVic. Crappy, annoying notes.
web notes are pretty good
Her notes are a messed up version of the book. Go back to the 80s.
Nice lady, but her notes suck. She should work on a better way of teaching.
shazzam!
Very good prof. keeps you interested
Asked her for help once and she gave me a smart ass remark..... notes suck too
difficult subject to make interesting
her notes have way too many typos in it;
urrr... whut?
EASY EASY EASY....SEXY SEXY SEXY! NEED I SAY MORE?
never comes, bad notes, boring class.....
easy course and notes are and assignments are a joke
i think im in love with betty
Not enough examples and too many notes. She doesn't properly prepare you for exams.
1982 called, wants their hair back. 1984 called, wants it's clothes back. By the way the 80's called, they said to come home!
Nice person, terrible teacher. Class is easy, but it can be difficult to attain a good mark because notes in class do not adequately prepare you for exams. TOO much reliance on overheads, Teacher had inadequate attendance for first 3 weeks of class.
Betty Reminds me of Peggy Hill.... shes one of the most out to lunch teachers Ive ever had... I learned more from staring at the wall. Shes nice class is easy.
Couldn't be nicer or more helpful. However math is pretty boring. Take the class.
easy class, good prof, really nice, SHAZAMM back to the 80s
For Econ 245 and 246, this is the teacher you want. Easy Easy Easy! Come to class you lazy bums. Assignments and tests are a joke. 100% on exam is achievable! Thats what I got I'm serious. And she's a hot mom.
Betty was money - easy classes if you survive the midterm everything else is free marks.
Friendly and knows what she's talking about, even though she hates the material for 245. Responds very quickly to emails. Her overhead notes are slightly lacking tho. Midterm was way too long, as made evident by 59% avg.
Very nice beatiful teacher, easy material.
text book sucks. no practice midterms or finals from her. only plus side is the ease of assignments and labs.
The class material is easy enough that anyone could teach it. Easy marks for assignments and labs. The overheads are not very clear most of the time and I still do not know how any of the topics covered relate to practical uses in the economy. Text is a waste of money.
The material of her cources is easy, her notes with some blank spot that push ppl to go to class is like high school teacher; however, she is a easy prof
A very clear, helpful and sexy (in an 80s way) teacher. If you want a solid grade, just pay close attention to the notes and all will be well!
Great teacher, always available for help. Easy assignments and labs. Do the work and you'll get an A. If not, you really shouldn't be in Economics!
All I wanted to do was throw my Shoe at her.
Boring lectures! Class isn't too hard, but she can be deceiving. What she says may be on the exams isn't always true. Study lots!
Worst prof at uvic. Gives overheads with blanks to force you to go to her brutal lectures. Basically just reads them to class and doesn't explain a damn thing. Easy labs and assignments but throws unexpected knoweledge questions on a stats test. Couldn't teach her way out of a paper bag. Homely too.
Wierd class.. She just gets you to fill in the blanks on your notes dloaded of the internet. Then after the silence of waiting to copy it all down she reads whats on the notes. Not too creative. Also a pretty hard class maybe cause its so boring I cant help but falling asleep.
Well, Betty holds a pretty boring class, but overall her tests and assignments are easy. She can throw things at you enexpectedly, but all profs do that. If you study her notes well, you will do fine.
boring lectures... u can't learn anythings from her.
If I wanted to learn more about the 80's, I would go to her class, but I dont because the 80's was gay. As for the class, you'll find that she basically crams in a wide range of topics, none of which are more in-depth than micro 103. The tests are weird, especially the random theory questions.
Very clear, straightforward. Read the notes, do the practice questions and you'll be set. Also, she's very nice, if you give her some respect.
Very clear lectures and notes. Materials are not hard itself so it's easy to get a good grade. If you take her class, follow the notes is all you need. Ignore the text or anything. Her T/F questions are hard, else are easy
Very clear notes, very helpful one of the better econ profs, always willing to help the students!
Well, my lowly opinion is that she cannot teach. Unless by "teach" you mean reading off the slides-this is the only thing she is good at. Classes are outright boring, she makes you fill in the blanks cuz otherwise no one comes to class...Gee, i wonder why. To get to the point, i recommend taking Stats with MATEMATICIAN, they are better organized.
Very very easy class... was planning on her final being difficult because the midterm marks were high - and no it wasnt. Don't have to worry about the textbook because anything testable she puts on her slides. Not a very interesting class, but definetly a prof that is easy to get a good mark from.
good teacher and easy

Has fill in the blank notes and then reads the notes back to us. That's not teaching! Her notes are anywhere from 40 to 80 pages long. Cancels classes a lot because she falls ill or loses her voice. No wonder we didn't finish all the topics that we were suppose to cover. Text is useless as we never use it. Class is easily passable though.
Great, Nice and Very helpful prof. Easy Class as well. Class may be boring sometimes but its all about the notes. DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK
super easy n helpful teacher, going 2 class is not mandatory if u have someone elses notes.. the textbook is a waste of money. Dont buy the textbook its never used. Just go to class n write the notes n if i can learn the course in 1 day befor the exam.. u will be fine!
such a good prof.. first econ class that i got a good mark in lol.. and DONT buy the textbook just look at her notes.. and i learned a day before the exam. this class iz a breeze n a half:) and shes SUPER nice!
Her notes are good becasue they are just fill in the blanks but she does almost no example of how to do the problems. She showed us how to do about 2 things actually in class. and she never knows the answers to peoples questions. All in all she is a lousy teacher but if you did good in 103 and math 100 then the course is easy and just review.
It doesn't matter if you want to goto class or not, it's only go and copy the missing words on the notes she post on the web. She's pretty lazy too; her midterm and assignments are just old papers with number changes. Take it if you need a GPA boost.
If you want an easy class that you can turn your brain off this is the one. However she teaches students like they are in Grade 5. Plus, there is no use to this class. If you have already taken Macro Econ or Micro and this course is not required for your program, don't take it. Waste of time.
Betty is great! Teaching from prepared notes is something to get used to. But everything she wants you to know and will examine you on is in the notes. The textbook was great. Her exercises are hard! But really super at making you understand things. Calculus optimization is what is pounded into your head! (don't worry it is fun)
This class is extremely hard to stay awake in. All her notes are fill in the blank, don't buy the text book you will never need it. This class was really easy, if you have questions on the assignments, go see her and she will give you the answers.
Betty J Rocks! Definately the most straight forward prof ive ever met, fill in the blanks for classes, AND THE NOTES ARE ALL YOU NEED! example questions in the book otherwise the book is completely useless, you have to learn it the betty J way because she teaches you very elementary! I love her so much i named my pipe after her! GO BETTY
Betty does it again! Those who do not like to be told what they need know, or do not attend class are those who don't get it. I got an A and could have gotten more if I studied harder.
Makes economics statistics easy to learn. Covers a lot, and does it succinctly. Tests and assignments are very fair. A bit easy and boring, but that's the student's failing and not hers. Bravo, Betty.
Betty is great. This is my third course with her and she came through again. This time I studied hard and got my A+. Betty is hot!
Betty's classes are a waste of time. She has a hard time keeping on track, and always spends half the class talking about uneccessary material. The fill-in-the-blank notes are a complete waste of paper, and it's not fair that the textbook is "required" for the course, yet we never need to use or read it. I can't believe I paid money for this!
good pro
Great teacher! Useful examples will be given in class.
Betty is a really friendly prof, and seems like a nice person. Unfortunately, she doesn't add much to the notes - her lectures went too slow for me so I didn't go to class, and I found that I could just read the notes (once I copied them off someone) in less than half the time it would take to go to class. She at least structured the course quite w
Frustrating class. I feel as though I have learned nothing yet this year. She just goes through notes that she has used for many years. The only examples/practice questions we get is in our assignments. And that is surely not enough.
first off, anyone who says she cannot teach has never been to her office hours. crystal clear. her notes are unnecessarily wordy but the material is there, all you have to do is study and understand. Not the most amazing prof but definitely not a bad one, and she cares about her students.
Pretty easy class to get an A in with minimal effort. Don't buy the text book, all you need is her notes to study. The assignments are the exact same every semester, so if you know somebody who's taken the course talk to them. I rarely wen to class as she just put her slides on the old-school projector and read them to us. Wast of time!
Betty is very clear on what will be on the midterm and final exam. There are no surprises :) Also, the fill-in class lecture notes are VERY VERY helpful for studying! Almost no need for the textbook :)
She blabs and blabs and blabs about nothing for the first half of class. Show up late and save yourself half an hour of eye-rolling.
Betty is a nice lady. Unfortunately, it seems like she tries to make things as complicated as possible. She goes on about equations and such and then lets us know we will never have to do it. She doesn't really do examples with numbers in class which makes it hard to understand anything.
Makes things harder than it should be; I am now studiper for having takin the class...she makes my eyes rain.
Not great lectures. Exams are easy though, no trick questions. And if you go to class she will likely give you the exact question that will be on the exam. If she demonstrates anything mathematical in class, that exact question will be on the exam. Do not take this course without taking MATH 100 or 102. It's all calculus. Master the assignments
Nice woman, interesting lecture style with the fill in the blanks notes which do keep you paying attention. Does her best with dry material and she keeps it light and fun with personal asides.
Very nice lady. Tests are fairly easy and mostly relate to assignments. Her notes are quite useful and labs are extremely easy. She is helpful when answering questions. Nothing to complain. It was an easy course.
Betty your the best one of the only real econ profs that the imperial econ dept have. I wish you were the econ chair, things would run as well as your classes!Have a grreat summer!!!
Betty is wonderful. Teaching is straightforward, and if you do the practice midterm and final, you will have no problem. She's got a great attitude too- warm and cheerful. Highly recommended.
She has got to be the worst prof I have ever had a class with. She does not care, all she does is read from her "fill-in" notes. You have to go to class in order to get a complete set of notes. My assumption is that if she didn't do this, no one would attend her classes. It is incomprehensible to me why this woman is still employed at UVic...
As comment below... The worst prof I've ever had at any school, in any subject. Should be teaching at a junior high level, definitely not college and CERTAINLY not at a university level. Each class usually consists of 10 minutes of verbal diarrhea, while the difficult concepts are hurried through and glossed over. TERRIBLE.
Betty J. is consistently 5 -10 min late for class. She then spends the next ten minutes setting up and talking about random sh*t. She turns a 50 min lecture into a 20 min lecture. She does know the material and concepts but but does not have enough class time to explain the most important concepts.
Lectures can be a little slow and dull. Her format consists of notes with blanks that you fill out during the lectures, a little reminiscent of third grade classwork. If you find it hard to keep up with notes, her format will be helpful. Classwork is slightly heavy, 4 assignments, labs, and 1 midterm will keep you busy but on track if you keep up.
she was horrible. i tried to tell her what shes doing isn't working and she had a emotional break down started crying
Betty is seriously amazing. Probably the most understanding prof I've had at uvic; she helped me out so much. Her explanations are always crystal clear and her exams are tough but fair. She is seriously awesome. Definitely my favourite econ prof here so far. :)
I'm surprised that people are complaining that they have to attend class in order to get the notes. Overall fair prof with straight forward notes and assignments. Midterms/finals were all based off of the assignments/practice tests that we were given. I will agree that there was a fair amount of class-time wasted, but overall an effective prof.
Aside from filling in the blanks on your notes, the lectures add no value, which is why the mandatory attendance is a drag. I recommend getting notes off someone. Exams are based off assignment questions and practice exams (= easy prep). Canceled classes because her personal life interfered. Unfortunately there is only one prof for 245 and 246...
This prof is a serious credibility crisis waiting to happen for U of Vic if they found out how incompetent she is with microecon. (If ANYONE on the board sat in on one of her classes, definitely she'd be looking for work.) Worst turn you can make during registration, avoid at all cost.A Catch-me-if-you-can fraud. Her employed status is a mystery.
My assumption is that most people listing the bad comments haven't taken many other stat classes and are expecting too much clarity from stats lol. Her explanations make sense, her notes and preparation material is similar to tests. If you work hard you can get an A. I would've liked a better textbook with practice questions. Effort=good grades
She is so messed up, always late and talking about everything except studies. Explanations are unclear, she just reads off her notes, seems like she herself has no clue about what's going on. Bad...She totally screws up in this, I'm so disappointed!
She has funny stories and is awkward to listen to sometimes. Her notes are clear and she is very straightforward in test and assignments, and labs are actually useful though can be tough with a bad TA. Kinda tough material, she really isn't a bad prof at all and you don't have a choice anyways, but there's a new text in print so that may be better.
She is the best teacher I'v ever met. She makes clear explainations and her homework comclude most of the knowledge in the midterms and finals. If you do your homework on your own and review corrections, you will get 90% more in the midterms and final. She is such a kind person that she answers you every detailed question. Ask her whatever you need
Textbook is not required which reduces a great deal of expenses. Homework, midterms and finals are pretty easy but I just can't take it serious. Otherwise I would'v got a better grade. Choose her course!!!
Just reads her online slides word for word. Waste of time. Also puts blanks in her online notes which force you to attend the useless lectures. Also starts class late almost every day
I don't see what ppl are complaining about. Explanations are clear, tests are straightforward and assignments are helpful. What more do you want? She's also one of the nicest people you'll meet at uvic and always willing to help. Sure, she's a little scatterbrained at times but it's not at the expense of students.
I had Betty for 203 and 245. It's safe to say she's the best most useful professor I've ever had. She will answer any questions you have, seriously, ANY questions you have, so definitely make use of her office hours. Shes incredibly nice and really cares about her students. Betty won't try to trick you on exams and will make sure you're prepared.
Uses formulas to teach, not concepts, so be ready to forget quickly. Tough grader, takes the "right or wrong" approach. Much of the material is easy, but you may not have enough time to complete quizzes or the midterm. You have no choice other than this prof for econ 245 and 246. Be careful, pay attention, practice, you will be fine.
A loveable person.. but not as a prof. She reads off her slides, and they're not that great to begin with. She is very slack with the length of classes (starting late, ending early) and cancelled 6 classes. However, the slides are a good guide as to what you should read in the textbook. Also, do the inclass quizzes and labs, they're super testable!
Betty spent a lot of time on easy material early in the semester and rather little on things that followed. Fill in lecture notes, open book quizzes, recycled assignments/midterm/final. Pretty straight forward class and an easy A
Nice lady but she can't really teach. Isn't a huge problem since its easy but you honestly won't learn much from her that you couldn't teach yourself. Also didn't give anywhere near enough time to complete midterm.
I don't know what people is complaining about, Betty is one of the sweetest, nicest professors i've came across.YES she sometimes talks about her life, so what? its funny and shes great at teaching! she cares about students and she always try and make time to meet (before or after class even!)textbook not even required, DO STUDY THOUGH!
Just finished 2 summer courses with Betty, and I can say that she's one of the nicest teachers I've ever had. Certainly not the most academic or profound class you'll take, but she's really funny and makes a dry class enjoyable. She's a bit disorganized, but just a really likeable and friendly person. Classes are easy. Absolutely recommended.
My thoughts are mixed about Betty. She is an amazing person and very helpful if you go to her and ask her questions. Unfortunately she loooooves her unrelated stories which forces her to rush through the material in lecture. My suggestion is do any practice she assigns and go ask her what will be on the test, she will likely tell you.
Easiest and nicest prof in UVic. She is a fair marker and her tests are easy. Lecture notes are enough for tests. Although the course is not that helpful.
She's the bomb. take all her classes.
Good prof,Very helpful in her office hours. The fill in notes are a little annoying but they do make you do this crazy thing where you actually go to class and learn something, so overall they are helpful. After taking 203 I went and found more courses that she teaches because there are MUCH worse profs at UVIC
Oh Betty J, she is such a wonderful woman who honest to god just wants to see everyone succeed. Not necessarily do well but I feel like if you make even the most remote concerted effort in her class youll make it out jut fine
There is a huge amount of questions on the final exam. I definitely do not want take this course again. She is really boring.
The final exam was way too long and some what difficult compared to the midterm and the rest of the material done in the class.
Easy prof but you don't really learn anything from the class. She starts late pretty much every lecture. Often doesn't have time to explain important concepts properly.
Betty is a very good teacher.I can understand all she talked about even English is not my first language. But she always talks something about herself in the class, which I think it is a litter bit wasting time.I took her econ 203(got A) and 245(got A+) at the same time.
Easy course, not a very good professor. She took ages to return exam marks and at times I doubted she knew what she was talking about. Nonetheless, she is good at relaying what will be tested. No textbook required.
Betty is not very good at explaining the concepts - very confusing. Her slides are pretty good in explaining what you need to know. Betty usually just reads off them. She also shows up ~5mins late almost every lecture and has a bad sense of humor... Despite all that, she is very approachable and tries her best to help you! Also, easy exams!
Very nice lady if you talk to her in person, gets a little curt via email. Asked her for practice questions outside the textbook, told me to look in the textbook... her notes with blanks are very annoying. overall not bad, doesn't help she teaches econ
She is the bomb, take all your classes with her if she is the one taking it that semseter
If want an A+ in stats have Betty as your prof. She basically tells you everything on the exam and you can find all the assignment answers online. Didn't learn a lot but that's just fine.
She has a review session where she basically goes through the exam with different numbers. Also all the questions on the final exam were from the tutorials, exact same just different numbers. She's hilarious & I love her. I didn't learn anything but that's okay because I got an A+.
I just do not like her style of teaching and marking!
Fantastic prof who is super approachable and fun. Clear expectations and easy to get a good grade. One of my favourites ever.
Betty J is so off the wall. Unfortunately that spills into her teaching sometimes and its occasionally a frustrating experience. Luckily 245 is a pretty easy class so attendance isn't really necessary. Its a good idea to go to her office hours because she's a lot more helpful there than during her lectures. For 245 I'd take her. For 246 -- Giles.
Go to class. Use mystatlab to study and you should be fine. Her tests arent too difficult. Usually midterms are much easier than finals.
Exams were easy but marking is too tough. For example, if you miss any small detail in the question, you question can be deducted all marks. Also, always late for class. Overall, class are not too difficult. I think TA markers exam much fair than her. Her making is too brutal!!! Also, be sure to read through questions very carefully.
Her exams were really easy and similar to the practice exam. However, I extremely dislike her marking style. For example, in a calculation question, if you forget to label a list that show the price index , she will take out all marks. Marking is extremely tough and brutal. Also, please choose a good TA or the lab assignment will be very difficult.
ECON205 is pretty simple class if you've taken ECON103. Betty is somewhat clear in her teaching but many questions will arise in lecture. She occasionally strolls in a few minutes late and will almost always take 5 minutes to get the lecture going. The content of the course is pretty easy as long as you put the effort in.
Betty is a wonderful and kind hearted lady; however, teaching is by no means her strong suit. She doesn't provide a lot (if any) practice for midterms and final exams. Nonetheless it's easy to do well in the class if you have the text as her tests usually aren't too hard.
Betty was great. Her expectations on the midterm and final are clear. Go to any review sessions; the examples she provides are the exact same format as on the final (the numbers are changed). She is always nice and pleasant if you ask her questions in office hours (but she goes off on unrelated tangents sometimes).
Definitely the best class that I have attended, and my 245's grade is the highest than all my other courses. Her exams are really fair if you practice her practice questions because they are almost exactly same to the exams, only the numbers are changed. Also, you should be careful on multiple choice questions because they are somewhat harder.
not bad
Betty is by far my favourite professor since being at UVic. I had her for Econ 245 and Econ 246 and while the material got tough at times, she was incredibly helpful. Don't feel too shy to go to her office for help, she is honestly one of the nicest people ever. Her grading is fair. Go to class to ensure you know the material. Study for the 2 exams
she is so kind. she alway will be there to help you if you have a question. she wont return exams on time. reviewing exams are really similar to past exams. review classes before midterms are really important. attend classes. do the assignments. re-check your grade when you get the test back, she wont grade tests herself and there are many errors .
Hilarious professor. I'm not a fan of her lecture style by giving you notes with blank words to fill in, but her class gets the job done!
Hilarious professor! Lectures can get overwhelming with how much information she gives you per day. I'm also not a fan of her lecture style by giving you notes with blanks to fill in. Overall a fun class with Betty though.
The grading system makes it quite easy to get a good grade in this class. Fill in the blank lecture notes can be annoying, however, as well as mandatory attendance. Funny prof that genuinely cares about her students and is fair at grading.
Betty is bae, take any course possible with Betty
Great fun loving prof! Best to take in the summer to be honest. She makes lectures interesting!
Easy to get a high grade
Easiest class I haven taken in my degree. She gives you the midterms and finals for practice then uses the EXACT same format just different numbers and maybe one different short answer.. you can easily get an A in this class. Final is the exact same as the midterm, just do the practice and you will do great
very good lectures, but attended just cuz of her little iclicker questions. make sure u go through her practice midterms because they are exactly like the final tests. lends u her own textbook when and if u need it, overall, a gem.
Betty is great. Enjoyed her lectures. Exams were fair. Course was organized and clear.
Attendance is mandatory, yet the slides she gives us has gaps that we need to fill during class, in PDF format, a Pain. no recommended extra work from text, do not buy the text. over complicates things and glosses over other things. midterm/final tests are essentially the practice ones she posts, but with different numbers
She'll show up late and get carried away from teaching and begin to tell nonsense stories for half the class. Reads off of slides and uses very few in class examples.
This was so boring and easy. Betty's lectures are fill in the blank notes so it's really hard to learn actively. She also frequently gets distracted and will talk for up to 30mins about unrelated material. Avoid if you can, but beware the beast guards required courses.
Betty's lectures are fill in the blank notes so it's really hard to learn actively. She also frequently gets distracted and will talk for up to 30mins about unrelated material. Avoid if you can, but beware the beast guards required courses.
Incompetent slides maker. Riddled with errors, and has blanks in them, that makes studying slightly harder, and a lot more annoying. In class the slides don't show what the blanks are, so whether you go to class or not the slides are terrible. She also goes way too fast, and sometimes all over the place
Teaching: 2/5 Slides online: 1/5 Kindness: 4/5 Midterm Fairness: 1/5 The first midterm was on less than half the assigned content Overall: 2/5
She is the nicest prof in econ. really she has a huge heart and care about her student she desire so much better on rating. super beloving prof in uvic. a lot of calculation for exam but she is super good at teaching the material. and really she cares about student. would definitively take any class she teachs
Betty is actually the closest thing to your mom lecturing you, you'll find being in University. Make sure you just attend the labs and follow exactly what the lab TA is doing, study exactly the practice final/midterm she puts out, and you'll get an easy A. Betty wants everyone to get highest grade possibly, fresh change for everyone.
I dont know why some people have negative comments about her, but she is definitely an amazing prof. She is a free style professor, but shes funny and helpful, extremely easy-going. Exams are also straightforward and fair. If you take Econ courses, you should definitely take with her !!!
Betty is amazing! She is super funny and caring. However, her lectures are a bit boring and slides seemed useless. If you want to do well, just try out practice midterm she posts and you should be fine (even though she makes a lot of mistakes in her solutions). Overall, easiest econ class I've taken. However, her exams are long and exhausting.
Betty's lectures are awful and her slides are totally useless, there's no other way to say it. Attendance is mandatory and she uses iclicker type questions. She's a caring and hilarious person though and can be helpful in office hours, plus her midterms are fairly easy. She's unavoidable for 245/246, but DON'T take 203 with her if you can avoid it.
Betty is amazing. She is so caring and sweet. Go to her office hour, ask anything anywhere. Attendance is mandatory, and lecture slides are long long long and in PDF. Do the practice tests and you will do great. An intersting elective for those who take Math151 and Stat252
Betty is a nice professor for ECON 245. It is critical to come to class every day and fill in the blanks in her pdf slides, and attend all the labs as well. The labs are easy to get credits. She only has one midterm, but don't worry if u screw up on the midterm, if your final is higher, she will give u the ideal grades.
She was always available by email to answer any questions about the assignments. She truly cares about her students succeeding, the second midterm proved to be much harder than the first and she immediately scaled and asked for student feedback on how she could make the questions more clear for the final.
Betty is lovely; she is such a sweetheart. Very few profs have a heart of gold but she does. 245/246 are some of the better econ classes because of it.
SO GOOD. THE BEST TEACHER IN THE WORLD!!!!!!!!
she is really good! i love her!
she is a good prof. you need to do the work and you will pass. She is fair. She knows her stuff and is available to help
Betty is a great prof and clearly in her lectures. She is fair in her marking and gives you opportunity to improve your marks. Her objective is to pass you, not fail you, so you have time to learn if you give put in the time. She responds to emails and appointments.
nice teacher ever
Best teacher ever. Classes are tricky but she helps you all the way. She is always available to meet and go over things, especially ways you can get more marks. She does not want anyone to fail and the tests are exactly the same as the practice tests. She even goes through them in the week before to make sure you know it all.
One of the best profs in UVIC. Always responds to emails and is accessible for extra help. Well prepared and gives exam prep class before final. If you have a choice of profs take her class. You cant go wrong if you attend and do the assignments.
During Covid-19 period, I think Bettys online lecturers are much better than normal lectures in classroom. Students are able to take any time they want to through lecture online. Videos are short and clear enough. Homework were not difficult.
Betty is the best professor I have had at UVic. She is extremely caring, wants her students to succeed and has very clear expectations. Take as many classes as you can with Betty. She is great in office hours, and will help you in any way that she can.
The worst prof yet, first semester of online did not go well with Betty. Literally ignored emails from me, was the least transparent. No live lectures so it's very uninteractive and since you never hear back from emails, good luck ever asking a question. Look for a different prof is my recommendation if you're taking her course online.
Betty had nice and straight forward lectures. She had no live lectures which made it hard to interact with her. Her midterms & exam were fair and not too difficult. Betty was nearly impossible to get ahold of. She almost never responds to emails and when she does it's usually a one-word response that comes off as passive-aggressive.
Betty's course is well organized and overall a good asynchronous experience. IT would be hard to find a better prof for stats during covid
Betty has been the best professor I have ever had. She is extremely caring and understanding which is very well appreciated during unprecedented times like we are in right now. She is very approachable and friendly and goes out of her way to help you. She is a gem! Anyone would be lucky to take a class with her.
She is so nice
ECON245 is by no means an easy course, but having it with Betty at least makes it manageable. She's so so nice, and makes attending the lectures worth it. Maybe the most chill prof I've had.
Betty Is a very exceptional prof. Teaching at Uvic since 1999, she has the experience and wisdom of how to conduct a course and present challenging course material. Very understanding and forgiving to students in the challenging time of Covid-19. She is one of the best professors I've ever had!
fun professor
Anybody giving Betty less than a five is clueless in my opinion. Betty is extremely caring, a funny teacher, and made a frankly pretty boring subject (course material wise) pretty enjoyable. Her tests are straightforward with no surprises. She is maybe a little bit inaccesible outside of class (super short email replies) but this is extremely minor
A literal angel.
such a caring and wonderful prof. just an absolute angel I loved going to her classes. Also really understanding of health concerns 100% take a class w her if you can
Best teacher I ever had
Very kind and genuinely great at teaching concepts, very considerate as well, highly recommend, though definitely not her fault TopHat and Packback sucks, regardless still, great prof.
Betty was an extremally kind and caring teacher.
Definitely the best prof I have had at UVIC so far. She is very caring and understanding and gives great in-class lectures. Through zoom she also records her lectures so if you're feeling ill or just too out of it to go to class, you don't have to miss out. She then posts the lectures so if you need to go and rewatch that is an option.
Very nice and despite how busy she is always make sure she responds to emails!
Betty is arguably the greatest professor in the Uvic Economics department. She is a great instructor, and a truly caring person. She wants to see her students succeed which evident anytime to talk to her. She is super lenient when it comes to missing exams and assignments and will make sure to find a time that works for you. Take any of her courses
I loved my class with Betty. She is really sweet and cares for her students. 100% would recommend her.
Can't wait to rate her, best prof I ever had, always with passion and energy to present and answering question for students
Amazing professor! Betty kind, like caring and straightforward with her expectation so her classes are a breeze even if the material is hard. When I missed a few days for personal reasons she was empathetic and supportive of my situation. Take her courses whenever possible as she is one of few professors who actually take care of her students.
You can tell that she loves what she does and is very into her work. A very good prof. I wish I had her for more classes.
My experience with Betty was manageable. Main issue was that her practice problems contained several numerical errors that resulted in wasting students' time. Also, her lecture slides are not cohesive which makes learning microeconomics difficult. However, Betty made up for her faults by being extremely accommodating and wonderfully kind.
Betty is lovely. However, she is quite disorganized. If you want a class with little structure, messy lecture slides, incorrect solutions and late marking, this is a class for you! She is the sweetest person, but confusing as a professor. Tests are mildly challenging. If you go to lectures you should pass
I'm inclined to give her a 3, but a 2 seems more apt. What others say is absolutely true. She is not a bad professor, but a little disorganized. Her lectures slides are impossible to understand, I wouldn't even try. But she is a fair grader and wants people to succeed.
nice professor
Love Betty, crazy disorganized but makes up for it by being really kind and forgiving. Super understanding and would take as many courses with her as I possibly could.
Greatest prof at UVic for Economics. Took her for 203, 245, and 246. Shame that not every student can have a teacher like her. BEST grading criteria by far of any undergrad class at UVic
Disorganized but accommodating professor. Messy slides but fair grading. Use Unstuckstudy for study prep to make up for minor issues.
Nicest Prof in the world! Always has a smile on her face, willing to answer any questions, super patient.
Best Econ prof at Uvic. She's not only a great person, but an amazing prof. I'd take any class she offered :)
Love betty, absolutely so engaging. She might be a little scattered but if you go to her asking for clarifications or how to do things she's more than welcoming. 10/10 great professors and really wants to see her students succeed
5 Midterms worth 15% each, Assignments 15%, labs 10% marked for completeness not correctness. I found 246 to be easier than 245. The midterms are pretty easy considering she tells you what specifically what kind of questions will be on it. The course was engaging as much as a statistics course could be thanks to Betty though somewhat disorganized.
After taking 245 with Betty I hate to say that I am not excited to take 246 with her in spring. She is very nice which counts for a lot, but as a teacher she isn't great. I don't feel prepared for 246 at all after this class. I've met people who really love Betty, but this is my personal experience. Wouldn't recommend if there are other profs.
Slides are slightly disorganized, but she gives multiple calculation examples that help you understand the concepts. The assignments are also similar to the exam, which was very helpful for studying. She is also very nice and helpful during office hours.
Amazing prof, would recommend to anyone to take her class.
