Very egotistical and full of herself. I do not recommend her ESPECIALLY for freshmen. She will make you think that all classes are this hard and stupid. She makes a boring subject even more boring. Save yourself the trouble and take someone else.
I agree I have been in her class for one day and she is way over the top. You must buy 4 books and the reading never seems to stop. Bev has the personality of a gerble and lectures about uninteresting information. Class consists of 3 tests from multiple sources which are difficult. Find another teacher or class.
what a great class--what a great prof-really knows her stuff-prepared-interesting
I agree way to intense. Her test are very hard to pinpoint she gives you so much to study and asks very direct questions. She jumps from subject to subject within seconds and without a complete thought of the last statement. Talks so fast you cannot take notes.
Great prof-some students are not ready for college-they come in play on their computers, sleep, talk etc. If you are serious, intelligent, mature she is great. If you are just hangin, go away!!!!
She's boring. She knows her stuff but she goes off on too many tangents. Granted some kids are dumb and need to be reminded how to take notes but give me abreak, shut up and teach the class!
I'm aware that this woman is very smart. I know this because she spent more time telling us how smart she is instead of teaching us about Latin America. Very full of herself and does not know how to teach. I advise you to find someone else.
Worst prof I have ever had! Impossible to take notes b/c she jumps from country to country, subject to subject. Takes attendence, class goes the full time. Pick another prof or a different country.
great prof-I learned alot. She covered so many Latin American Countries in one semester. I can away with much more info than when I started. Quality Prof-dosn't fool around, but is there for students. Take her-she's great
She has a very unique insight on life, loves to talk and go off on several tangents. She expects a lot of memorization and class participation. She spent alot of time lecturing us on how to be good students and her personal life. Her tests are hard and she expects great details. Be prepared to read, take notes, and study. You will learn alot though.
Fogey, is the reason I search this site now. I have no time for dropping classes because someone is angry at whoever or whatever. She takes this wayyy to serious, like a drill sergerant. The heat is on 100 degrees she stays cold and she walks around looking at ipods and laptops and phones and will call you out if you are doing anything other tha
This woman is an amazing teacher. By the end of this class you will be an expert on Latin America and many other things. She uses overheads so notes are VERY organized. Don't take her class if you don't want to do a lot of thinking or participating. If you pay attention and do the reading you will have an awesome time in this class!
Lots of unnecessary studying for a general education class. The professor is boring, rude, and an overall pain to be around. She frequently tries to embarrass students in front of class. Her tests are difficult and she has sudden mood swings . If you like to listen to your grumpy grandmother, by all means take her.
Good class. I learned alot her lectures are well organized and well presented. Exams are fair. Overall would highly recommend
good instructor-good well organized class-good use of overheads and films. Really knowledgeable about topic.
This was the best class I've had at Oakland U. Prof is well informed, fun and cares about students, She has to deal with alot of crazyness from freshmen but does it well. They need the 'wake-up' call. I loved the class.
The heat is on 1000, she talks for hrs. way to much for a gen ed class, way. fogey loves to fail students.
Although it may seem that she is a little bit conceded, going on into tangents about her life spent among villages in the Amazon, Fogelson is an intelligent instructor. Yes, the lectures are long, but they are informal. She tells you what to expect and if you listen you'll do just fine.
She really wants you to understand what she is trying to teach you.
Horrible professor. She acted as though her class was the only one we had, and it was a Gen Ed class! Her exams were ridiculous, and she talked about things that didn't even seem relevant to the text. I don't recommend her at all, she has a huge tendency to ramble on and on and on!
She made me HATE latin america and LOVE ratemyprofessor.com
Best prof I ever had-great understandable lectures-she made course very interesting-well worth the time and money
Beverly J. Fogelson PhD has difficult tests. Her quizzes are pretty easy though. I would not recommend her for freshman. Classes are based on lecture and class participation is highly recommended. You get extra points at the end of the semester if you participate.
This wasn't my major so I was hesitant. As semester progressed I came to appreciate what a great professor really is. This class was fantastic. I learned so much. She has traveled the world and shares without conceit or arrogance.
Beverley J. Fogelson ph.D is by far the best professor i've ever had. i highly receommend her.Class is always interesting and never dull. Tests can be challenging but you'll do well as long as you show up to class and review your notes.
is there value here-about 80 students in class I took and only a few reviews here-sounds like those who fail dislike-actually, she is fantastic-crystal clear and accessible
This was the easiest class I took, I'm a freshman. Her lectures weren't hard to understand, and even though she rambled she always found a way to connect it to what we were talking about, somehow. As long as you take notes you should be fine. She pointed out what was going to be on the test too. I recommend taking her class in the afternoon though.
Fantastic class. I'm so glad I took it. She really made me think about alot of things I had taken for granted about Latin America. Well organized, clear lectures, fair grades. Great class and prof
best class I've ever taken. changed my life
worthwhile-learned alot-she's clear, concise, knowledgeable, interesting and makes topic come alive. never bored
fantastic class, great prof, very clear, very knowledgeable, would gladly take her again
Not the easiest class ever taken but the most valuable. She really made me think in areas I never had before. Great prof
Please dont take this class. This woman is as mean as it gets and will get happy when it is time to fail you. Will make you try to remember the whole entire world for one test. btw she is on here rating herself. Lol you are a case fogy.
Very interesting prof- tells lots of interesting stories and tends to ramble. Not a very difficult class, you definitely have to show up thogh. Tells you what's on the exam the day before. I highly recommend her.
lovedd this class! she is a very interesting professor I enjoyed listening to her talk. If you study everything is simple and she tells you what will be on the exam the day before !
This class requires students who pay attention to lectures, take good notes and keep up on reading. There's 3 exams that are not cummulative, with the final being the 3rd exam. There's a couple small quizzes to help boost your grade. You will need all the books. She's very knowledgable, experienced, funny and relates the material to current events.
Fogelson is a pretty good prof. Her lectures are usually interesting and she's a nice lady. The class is pretty easy if you do the reading, take notes, and pay attention in class. The only thing I didn't like about her was that she seemed to be pushing a political viewpoint in class.
Super easy class if you show up and pay attention. She strays away from the topic and definitely pushes her politcal viewpoints onto the students. Always feels it necessary to explain how to take notes-I'm pretty sure we wouldn't be here if we couldn't take notes by now...easy A.
I was skeptical when coming into this class, mostly because science is NOT my forte at all. However, I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed class very much. The freshman got incredibly annoying at times, but she managed to put them in their place ;) Just show up every day, take good notes, and you'll have a goo grade.
Professor Fogelson is an amazing professor. I learned so much in her IS250 class. She is very intelligent and well versed on the subjects she teaches. She also has a good sense of humor and is pretty easy going. If you want to do well in her classes, come to lecture everyday and take good notes. If you make an honest effort, you'll do well.
Great Prof, Great Class. I love how she connects the material to our lives. She is really, really great.
I have this class right now and I am learning a lot. She does try to push her views on the students. Her lectures are just about half of the test material, you have to read the book & the book is boring! All in all the class isn't hard though.
This was one great class. I learned sooo much and the prof is awesome-I mean really awesome
I think I got more out of this class than any other I've ever had. I was reluctant to take Latin America because it seemed like just another elective. Boy, was I wrong. I understand a lot about Latin America and a lot about the USA. A really great experience
If you attend every class and pay attention, the exams will be easy. She has you write down a question or comment, from the lecture, at the end of class and turn it in; which gets easier the further into the semester. She is very opinionated.
good class. I'd recommend it. Certainly college level
Very good professor, she is very involved in her material which makes the class really interesting. She tells you exactly what you will need to know for the exams. Highly recommend this class!
ego tripping. wants you to call her dr. fogelson. the only thing she is a doctor at is giving the stink eye, which is what you will get if you have to go to the bathroom during her lecture or show up even a minute late to class. a lot of in class work and if you dont pay attention she will purposely make you answer questions in front of the class.
This is probably the best class I've had so far at Oakland. She really relates what she teaches to our lives. He doesn't like cell phones and texting in class though-feels we should treat the learning environment with the respect it deserves-I really do agree with her. I loved the class, and found her to know so much-blew me away. Great
I would recommend this class. She doesn't overuse powerpoints. She is clear and makes the work interesting. I loved the part on the tango and on Colombia and concaine and on the border and immigration. REally, really good prof
Class was worth the money. She's good.
This class is a complete waste of time and money. She goes on rants about irrelevant life lessons. Absolutely hates pretty people, or anyone with money. Each persons test is different, so if you skip a class, she is sure to give you the test on the lecture you weren't there for. oh and don't ever forget she's an ANTHROPOLOGIST!
I was in the class with gal who kept saying she wanted to stay young and beautiful forever. We all kind of giggled at her ego. She seldom came to class and was a real freshman type. Class was actually pretty great.
Best class I have ever taken. She relates the material to the real world. Not the easiest but certainly not the hardest. Fair.
She was alright. She went off topic every single day about her life lessons that had nothing to do with the class. She takes herself and life way too seriously and her lectures were really sloppy. Class wasn't that difficult though, just come to class and take notes.
Taking organized notes was impossible because she'd switch topics then come back to them a little while later. You HAVE to read the textbook to make sense of the lectures and do well on the exam. attendance is mandatory and she presents exam material that isnt in the textbook Shes an interesting person but i would not recommend her as a professor.
Such a BAD professor!! Her lectures have nothing to do wtih Latin America. All she does is talk about how she thinks life is and how it should be, and tries to force her beliefs on you. She is completely crazy. Definitelty do NOT recommend this lady.
Yes-this class is well worth the time and effort. She changed the way I look at the world and did it in a way that connected it to our lives. I really strongly recommend this class
I didn't realize what a good class and prof this was until this semester when I have a terrible one. Fogelson is great, she makes the course interesting and gives us a chance to give our opinions. I really think it was one of the best classes I've taken so far.
great class, great prof, fair grade. well worth the time and effort, learned how to think on college level.
Decent teacher that emphasizes on class discussions. She will pick on you for your opinion so you should be ready for that. She is pretty fair, but it's annoying when she uses class time to call people out on using their cell phones, doing other homework, etc.
She's on time, follows the syllabus, makes reading comprehensible, interacts with students, is fun, grades fair, everything I wanted or needed in a class
I just got done taking her final exam. She is a very passionate teacher. She really loves Latin America. There is no homework and no papers to write. There are 3 tests and a quiz. There are some in class writing assignments but they are strictly your own thoughts. She does like to call on people to give their opinion. Also, She hates cell phones.
Very good teacher, very passionate. I would recommend her to anyone. She knows her stuff. I was able to take stuff that I learned in this class and apply it to other classes. She is very clear as to what she expects from you. Overall a great teacher. But be careful, she has a sign in sheet and deducts points if you miss class. Also, stay off phones
Best class I've ever had. She's great and makes learning about LS relevant to our lives. She's very approachable, I had lunch with her in the Oakland Center and she always returned my emails. I loved the class
Very, very interesting class. Professor Fogelson has a great approach to teaching. Do the work. Stay off the cell -she is really tough on texting in class, and go to class. I liked this class a lot
Grading consists of: 3 exams (80 points each), attendance & participation (60 points)for a total of 300 points. Short weekly readings are assigned. Exams mainly focus on the book, but lecture notes are important as well. Tough for a level 102 class. Be prepared to talk and answer questions in class, she often puts students on the spot.
I enjoyed this class and the profs approach. She makes it interesting and relevant to students lives. I'd take her again. Must get book and take notes. class participation expected. Turn cells off. No computers. Attendance requried
Personally, I liked the class. She is a really, really good prof and very, very smart. That's what I paid for.
fantastic class. take it. She's great, fair, approachable.
This is the reason why we take college level classes! We need more professors like Dr. Fogelson. She makes you think and work hard, which is what you need once you graduate. Highly recommend the class. Need to put in effort and textbook is indispensable!
IF YOU HAVE THIS CLASS DROP IT ASAP! I hated her! All she does is lecture the whole time and tell her stories. I was lost the whole class & she doesn't explain at all and expects you to teach yourself and know things! Also you have to pay close attention during her lectures and write notes the whole time because they will be on tests!! HARD CLASS!!
Professor Fogelson is an very nice person. It would be nice if she could remember my name but on the flip side the book is a must to read. Lectures can be interesting and boring. She tells a lot of stories and is one of those very straight to the point strict professors. 3 exams, and a daily thoughts writing assignment. Attendance is mandatory!
Fogelson seems like a nice lady, but her lectures are very boring. There has been many days I've needed caffeine just to keep my eyes open while listening to her. She HATES it if you look tired or are sleeping. Again, seems nice but she has the potential to blow up and turn mean at random times. She's OK. Not the best but not the worst either.
Great class. She's very caring and approachable. Book is required reading. In class assignments. I really, really liked the class. She really knows the topic and makes the class very interesting. I'd take her again. Students who don't study and are just there but not involved always complain about everyone but themselves. I liked her
Highly recommended. Nice to have a Ph.D teaching a class. she tells great stories about her trips to the Amazon. exams are fair. she is really really nice and gives good, fair exams. take her but turn your cell phones off. she is really strict on that.
Good class. she won't let you sleep or text but she's right. some of the STUDENTS were really boring, pretty dumb but most were really into the subject. I'd take her again. Read the syllabus, read the book and come to class-get the grade, no problem.
Read syllabus, attend class, read book, lectures are very interesting and add to but don't replace readings. She is very professional. Very knowledgeable. Very good. I never missed a class. Some students are just screwing around which doesn't work with her. No cells or computers. Fair grading. Doable exams. In class writing. Loved the class
Interesting class but continuously lectures and is all over the place. Really random too, she talks about neanderthals one minute and about the meaning of corn the next minute (and other obscene things). Little weird. Go to class, a lot of stuff on the test isn't in the book. AND buy the book, you WILL need it.
NO, she's not all over the place. She uses examples to back up what culture she is talking about. Easy to follow and she makes it interesting. Her lectures follow the chapter topic so it helps to read book as you go. Great prof, great class. I am going to take her again, well worth the money
Class was well structured and her lectures are extremely clear and interesting. I would highly recommend this prof.
AMAZING. Her stories of traveling were fascinating (and relevant). Her expectations of students are very, very high so try your best! and pay attention, sometimes you write a mini paper at the end of class based on the lecture--be clever. she will read the best ones out loud. I would highly recommend her to anyone, she is an awesome lady.
She made a tough topic (human evolution) not only understandable but interesting. She is very helpful and really cares about students. She explains why you want to know the subject while adding lots of relevant stuff. I really liked her and the class. She is very knowledgeable about anthropology and has been all over. Liked her stories.
Really, really loved this class.Dr. Fogelson is very fair and the class was very interesting. She was available after ever class and was helpful. Take her!!!!!
If you still think at highschool level and want to goof off don't take this class. If you think at college level and want a really great class-don't miss this one. 3 exams. In class papers. In class discussion. No texting. No sleeping. Great prof.
Popular prof. Class fills fast so register early. No nonsense prof- but well worth the time, money and effort. Changed my life and how I think about being a person.
recommended. clear in presentation. work not overwhelming, exams fair, text required, don't sleep, don't text. High ratings on course and content, I'd recommend
Come to class and you will get at least a 3.0. there are 3 exams worth 80 points each/45 points towards attendance. brilliant woman who has traveled around the world and has interesting lectures. the exams are a combination of the book and lecture so do what is asked by her. she's put people on the spot a lot so make sure you are paying attention
Lets put it this way, if you are a freshman and havent grown up yet, be prepared to be belittled. She is very arrogant and puts down students. Her lectures are all over the place. She is not nice, but you get used to her after awhile. I have no idea what all the hype is about her. She is one of the worst profs ive had.
Good class. I would recommend. Work is very manageable. She is very clear and makes class interesting
I am so glad I took this class. She is really helpful and makes learning about Latin America relevant to our lives. Highly recommend tooo
She is a great professor but her tests are tricky. I loved the material, studied hard but scored low on the exams so I will say she's hard. Great class though
As a person Professor Fogelson is awesome she's funny for an older lady and her life experiences make lectures more interesting. However, her exams are ridiculous. The highest grade in the class on each exam was about a 75%. The class itself is horrible. Wouldn't recommend it
Good class. Make sure you buy the textbook. She gives study guides a couple of days before each exam which really helps. She is also very knowledgeable and helpful.Lots of us really, really liked this class. Exams are fair if you study and take class notes. She makes class very interesting.
Quality prof. Highly recommend this class. Bring book to class with you and don't cut class. Fair grades.
I learned alot and the course held my interest. No term paper. 3 Multiple choice and short answer essay exams. Class was quite good considering it is not my major. Prof is a real gem.
Very unclear and would not recommend taking her class!
Positives: Funny, passionate, smart lady. Negatives: Disorganized, NOT EASY BY ANY MEANS. Kept me interested tho, even when I wasnt doing well. Never ever skip a single lecture. The book is a must. I made friends in that class & formed a study group (#DoTheSame #TrustMe). I survived it with a 3.0 but I worked rly hard for it. Good luck & God speed
Great class. Quality prof. Clear, smart, understanding, good experience. highly recommend
Phenomenal class. Best I have ever taken. Agee, must bring book. Definitely college level which was much appreciated. She is crystal clear and supportativw
I am in this class right now and I honestly have no idea what these people were talking about when they wrote their comments. Yes, she does love Latin America, but she does not care whether her students succeed. The material isn't terrible, but the way she runs her class is.
She is very unorganized, she is not helpful doesn't use moodle. She says not to put people down but when she asks for your opinion she will tell you that you are wrong. I do not recommend her at all.
Great class. Couple of students created problems but prof handled well. She is well worth time and effort
really loved coming to class. she makes the basic facts relevant and interesting. I felt like she was really talking to us as people. learned alot about la and liked it
Great lass. Highly recommend
I would take her again. Map test and three exams. She is a good prof.
DO NOT TAKE HER SHE IS SOOO RUDE AND CLOSED MINDED!!! YOU WILL FAIL HER EXAMS ARE SUPER HARD
Fantastic. She really likes the students and interacts with us. Textbook is necessary but she tells you what to study. Gives study guides. Lectures are so exciting you can't wait for next class. Liked other students in class. Take her
Good prof. Good class. She makes it fun to learn. She is very fair in grading, but you do have to work
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!! actually sitting in class is not bad but if you want an A forget it!! i showed up every day read the book took notes and now i have to retake it. and who is the only person that teaches it, that would be her! i am super upset
She is good. Of course if you don't come to class and don't do the work you would expect to fail. This is college. 3 exams, multiple choice not very difficult. We did a lot of class interaction which was really fun. I loved her stories and her way of teaching. I plan to take her again.88
This was not a hard class. Calc is hard, Bio is hard. Class is worth it. made lots of new friends and we all passed. learned alot. she likes students andknows her stuff. Take the class.
I agree with most of my course mates. She is very good. I highly recommend her.class very doable and certainly is not boring.
I would recommend the class. Lots of interaction. Fair exams. Interesting.
Lots of in class interaction. Looked coming to class. Exams on both lecture and book, but she goes over book. Attendance counts. Discussion in class cou ts too. Liked her
Her class was something to look forward to everyday. I enjoyed her lectures. She was very serious, and she looked like she knew what she was talking about because she traveled to 40 countries. Read the textbook well, take good notes, and use flashcards because it will really help. Attendance is mandatory.
College level quality course with mucho discussion and fair exams. Recommend highly
I didn't think I would like this course, it's on evolution. I was really surprised that I did. She makes it soo real and like part of our lives. I would take her again.
DO NOT TAKE CLASSES WITH THIS PROFESSOR!!!! It is very clear she only became a professor to hear herself talk. She is rude and disrespectful to students, and frequently falls back on stereotypes to put us down. Her tests are unclear and unorganized and her grading procedures are lazy and cruel. She is the worst professor at Oakland, BY FAR.
I love her as a Professor, she can be rude if your texting in class, or falling asleep, but if you pay attention in class your going to be fine. She is preparing you for higher level classes, and she gives you 50 points if you don't miss more than the allowed days to be absent.
What a horrible prof. Run away now!! She doesn't give a crap about students or their grades. I don't know why she is even a professor at OU. What an awful representation of such a great school.
Good prof. Very I teresting and clear. Loved her style of presenting.take her, you won't be disappointed
I looked forward to coming to class. She is the best prof I have ever had. Fair exams. Met my best friend in her class. Love to hear her talk. She is funny, and so very smart. Learned so much. Loved her
The class interaction is awesome. She goes over book, then gives a lecture with overheads, slides, outlines, photos. Three exams which was great and she shows you what the best exams look like which helps. You give feedback in class. Fantastic course.
She teaches lots of classes. I tell my friends to definitely take at least one. Very good course. Very doable. Big class but well organized
Third year in college and this professor by far was the worst I had. She tells you the first day few of you will pass and she means it. GOOD LUCK if you take her course.
Do not waste your time with this professor. The class material is interesting, but she is so rude. Does not handle questions from the class well...Tells you to "look it up" and continues to talk about herself. She will probably mention that she is an anthropologist or a PhD in every single lecture. Don't forget this!
I have taken many classes at OU, and this has been one of my worst experiences with a professor. I have a great interest in the subject, however the experience with Fogelson is sub-par. Be prepared for the unbalanced arguments, irresponsible generalizations and soapbox rants of a self-proclaimed anthropologist.
Very unprofessional attitude, absolutely does not belong in a classroom. She is careless in spewing inappropriate generalizations and false information. Be prepared for her unorganized teaching style of lectures/rants and her outright rudeness. I do not recommend taking her as a professor!
While I have a great interest in this subject, this class has been very disappointing. I would recommend taking it with another professor. Look to the comments below and you will understand why! It also seems as though she may even write her own reviews on this website. Beware!
Taking Fogelson's class was the one of the worst experiences I have had in 6 years of undergrad study at OU. She frequently making insulting generalizations, ignores student questions, and goes on unprofessional rants. Also one of the most hostile and paranoid testing environments I have ever been in. She is a bitter old woman.
She is the best teacher I have ever taken. If you don't like her because she made you think outside of your box, then she did not do her job. Exams are fair and whatever you do, do NOT look at your phone
I agree with most others here. She is a great prof. No nonsense, but what a teacher should be. I learned soooo much and she is sooo interesting.
Soooo great
It was really nice having a prof that treated us like adults instead of teens. I particularly like how she connected the class to our real lives. I will take her again.
Look at the 4 reviews under mine. There is one for each of her classes all posted on the same day in the middle of the semester. If that doesn't send up red flags, then I don't know what does. Avoid this professor at all costs, she is one of the worst professors at OU.
She is easily one of the wprst professors at Oakland. the only reason to take a class from her is to avoid Spencer-Wood. these two are easily very similar and have been known to share their over paranoia about students cheating.
Horrible. I started off sort of liking her. She's blunt. Very interesting and really forces you to think outside of the box. However, she is incredibly rude and treated us like children. She spoke about the "senior level" and how we should be operating there like this was high school She literally insulted our intelligence when we asked questions.
This class has been one of my worst experiences at Oakland. I'm a senior about to graduate and I have never been more disappointed in a professor. She is a despicable person, and her intent is clearly to scare away underclassmen by creating a hostile environment where you don't feel safe voluntarily contributing or asking questions. Avoid her!!!
Prof was very interesting and gave fair exams. loved inclass discussion. I plan to take her again. Some students really not up for college so don't do work then complain about her. she is a great prof.
Fanrastic class, she is terrific. Exams fair. She is so interesting and funny. We all loved her.
extsttoryremely interesting class and professor
This is my absolute favorite prof. She is very passionate about her field and makes lecture interesting. Doesn't go off of ppts. She is funny and entertaining. Do not use your phone AT ALL in her class. Takes points off for missed classes. If you go to lecture and read the book you will get an A. Loved her class, highly recommend her!
Not funny, not kind. VERY rude. She creates a very hostile environment in the classroom. Grades arbitrarily. Terrible professor pretty atypical of OU. So disappointed in the class as well. I learned very little. Her exams are all about memorizing lists of information and regurgitating it EXACTLY the way she wants or she takes points off.
Very good class. Very fair prof. You will learn a lot. Those who don't like her hoof off a lot.
After two classes with her, i know that she is only rude to students that are rude to her first, or who text, sleep, eat etc. isn't that her job????
Laziest professor I have ever had. Barely teaches material, basically tells you to read everything in the book for the exams and fills up lectures by having us copy down lists of outdated information. We had to write down a question and comment on the lecture every day and this ended up being the biggest waste of time. Wouldn't take her again.
Best profmi have had so far. Some students in class low level but others not. Fair in grading. Interesting. Liked the class a lot.
Really found the class informative, and agree she gives fair exams. Tries to get us to I tract, but some guys are new to college and expect to get a grade without cracking the books. I very much liked her way of teaching. Very clear. 3 exams, goes over reading. Uses overheads. Good semester with her.
Need to come to class regularly, but the lectures are Interesting. Read the book and take good notes. Tests not overly hard. She is very interesting, smart and has traveled to some awesome places. I enjoyed class. Liked her.
This class is a sheer lecture class, so pay close attention. It can be hard to pay attention though, because some of it seems/is a bit irrelevant. The tests are multiple choice and specific to the book and lectures. There is a lot of pressure to do well on each test, because they were the bulk of your grade. I managed to do well, though.
Very large class, but well controlled. No texting, coming in late etc that would disturb others concentrating. Very interesting. Uses lots of examples and her own extensive experience in the field, enjoyed the class
She can be a very hard professor but you will learn a lot. She is incredibly insightful and not just about the class she is teaching but about life in general. I didn't need to take the An 320 but I took it specifically because she was teaching it and I wanted to take her class one more time before I graduated.
She tell your false information. I learned this by talk with another professor at Oakland about what I was learning. She twist information to make her opinion the "right way" and will argue with you to make you feel lower than she is. She tells you the first day of class we are not on her level. Worst professor ever had in my four years at OU.
Great prof. Very interesting. Lots of class interaction. Exams are fair but must study book. Will take more courses with her.
Very clear and fair presentation of human past and tools and art and ancient civilizations. Really like the way she teaches. Will definitely take her again. Need to read book and come to lectures. 3 exams. No papers. Lots on writing in class.
I would give this class a very high rating. I knew nothing about Latin America, but she gives a lot of quality stuff. She has lived there so knows the facts. Exams are not to hard if you study and she gives a good study guide. Must go to class and take notes. No texting, she is really strict on this
Prof is fine. Read book she uses it a lot. Gives study guide and 3 exams. Interesting class. Liked her
Spends more time talking about not using cell phones in class than going over relevant materials. Makes it very clear that she does not respect you, and can be rather degrading at times. When she does teach, however, she is very clear and explains the notes well, though can get long. This class is based on two tests, and a non- cumulative final.
I learned so much in this class. She makes the material relevant to our lives. She has lots of experience and really knows how to make the stuff interesting.
Great class. Fun. Great prod. No cells or texting which is good. Clear, understandable lectures. Met my best friend in this class.
Class was very informative. Great she controls celltext use. Exams fit lecture and books
Ms Fogelson is a very good teacher. I learned a lot. She is interesting and helpful
WORST professor I have ever had. She goes on and on during her lectures, without making it clear what information you should know. She never ever discusses the book, but still grades you on it. She spends most of the lecture degrading her students and complaining about cell phones. NEVER take her if you can avoid it.
I am now almost a senior at OU and she is literally the worst professor I have ever taken. She rants on about nothing in class, is demeaning towards students, and expects you to know things on the test that she never once brought up. I highly recommend you do not waste your time, money or frustration on her.
Took for Anthropology. It am a senior. She is one of the best profs at OU. Very fair. Very smart. Very interesting.
Students who don't pass, slacked off or did not come to class. She is hard to follow and her exams are harder, but if you come to class take notes, and do the reading you will pass. I learned a lot. And if you ask her for help or email her so does respond. 3 exams study guides for all and gives extra points here and there.
Best class I have had so far
I wouldn't recommend anybody taking a class with her. She gets off topic very fast & makes you feel dumb if you don't know what she's talking about. She talks from the time class starts until she get tired of talking.
College level class. Very interesting prof. Freshman level so lots of students very immature and not ready for college. She really cares and gives lots of good comparisons. Liked her
Fogelson is great! She has so much experience in the field and can tell you anything about any culture. Her lectures may be long but they're so interesting that I don't mind. Make sure you read the text book because she doesn't mention everything in class. I actually added anthropology as my minor after this class! Would recommend.
Prof. Fogelson is very rude. Does not answer questions in class and ignores everyone. Only three exams. Final is not cumulative. Buy the book because the exams are based on the reading and lectures in class. Jumps topics a lot making her lectures very difficult. No cell phones or she will call you out and make you stay after class.
Great class. Made tough material easy to understand. Takes time to talk to you. Some freshmen not ready for college classes so complain but most of us like her a lot.
I enjoyed the class. She is an amazing prof. Like that she confronts texting students. Will definitely take her again..
I liked her. Know a lot about anthropology now. Friendly, interesting, but expects us to act like adults. Tough on texting and coming In late. Very fair in grades. Read book!!!! Good class
She was intimidating, she scared me but I learned so much and anthropology just fascinated me! Her exams are straight to the point and I thought they were easy to take!
Amazing prof. She has traveled the world and really makes anthropology interesting.
Her lecture's are amazing. At the beginning, they were tough to keep up with but once you learn her teaching style it gets easier. She gives three exams and you lose two points for every missed class, but you won't want to miss with her lectures. She really challenges your perspective and is very passionate about anthropology. She demands respect.
Old school prof, a lot of respect for her teaching style. Strict but fair w/class rules. 3 exams, multiple choice. Take good notes during her lectures, read the book. Really interesting to listen to, she knows & loves her field. OU needs more teachers like her. If you get a chance to take her, do it! I learned some perspective from listening to her
She is super strict about technology in her class. Very confusing as to what to study on the upcoming exams and a lot of what is on them is from the books. She is a tough older teacher who goes off on weird random tangents. Would not recommend.
A very old school professor. If you want to contact her, you must do so by her office hours or after lecture. She talks the entire lecture. She doesn't make slide shows, so taking notes in class is absolutely necessary to remember the content for the exams. She knows a lot about her profession, but has a very condescending attitude about it.
The text material is straight forward but, her lectures can be very confusing and do not translate well to her exams. Exams were difficult but passable if you attend nearly every class. She will question you about very specific details from lecture.
She's super nice and caring as a person. BUT, is horrible when it comes to teaching. Can be very rude, told the girl next to me she is "in trouble" (regarding her future) just because she asked a question. Attempts to make slideshows but usually end up being random pictures & shows her own notes which is just scribbles. Stay away if possible.
Just saying. She was nice during out the winter semester. Old school due to the fact that she does not want phones. She will call you out. Pretty much read the book and you will pass the class. Her notes also matter so take that into consideration because she says that alot.
Very interesting lady, she incorporates her own stories and experiences into her lectures which I thought was pretty awesome. She calls on random people a lot which forces you to pay attention and participate in class. The exams are very difficult and if you aren't there to take notes everyday or study very hard you won't pass them.
Dr. Fogelson literally changed my life. I came in as a business major and took AN 101 as an elective and fell head over heels for Anthropology, so I changed my major. She is tough, strict and you will 100% need to make it to every class, but just think of it as story time with tests. Anthropology will change your life. I recommend this class to all
She's a lovely person bit a horrible professor. Only good thing is tests are multiple choice. She rambles in lectures and you have to write fast in order to write everything she says down and I mean everything.
Somewhat hard to take notes on. It's basically story time, which is good- she's had lots of experience in the field and has a lot to tell. Not an ideal class if you have a poor attention span or poor memory, as the book doesn't cover everything she tests on. Copy everything she puts on the board, memorize those lists. Tests are fair.
She's a tough lady. Her lectures are old school, and doesn't do power point. She just speaks and you have to write. Show up to class! READ the chapters. STUDY hard for the exams. PAY attention
Dr. Fogelson is a great old school anthropology prof. Once you get used to her style (no phone use in class, etc.), she will provide some great lectures on the content (she has a lot of field experience). Be sure to read the book outside of class, as some of the material there isn't covered in lecture and vice versa, and take good lecture notes.
Class is clear it. Read, attend lecture, participate, study. No surprises. She is very good and really knows her stuff. Loved the class
Fantastic prof.
AVOID. AT. ALL. COST. Took this class to try out anthropology and knew i took the wrong professor to inspire me into this new topic. She ranted about politics and insulted anyone who voted against her. didn't learn anything and had to drop the class or my GPA was at stake. Take another prof if you want to explore this topic or need the Gen ed.
Worst prof i have never had. She doesn't let you go to the bathroom, if your phone is anywhere in arms reach even in your pocket she will raise her voice at you in front of the class. i watched her interrogate a girl for getting up to use the rest room and yelled at some guy for throwing away a piece of paper in the trash. avid. please avoid.
The only grades we had were from 3 exams. No other homework or chances for grades. Got 60% on both exams and that was with weeks of studying. Lectures the whole class, makes you take notes nonstop, does not tolerate electronics, expects you to know a TON of information. Expects a lot from the students but means well in the end. Wouldnt retake her.
You are graded on three exams and that's It. If you take notes in the class and study weeks in advance you'll do fine. You have to study a lot and be sure to literally write everything in order to pass but besides that she will talk fast but will slow down if you ask.
Pros: Very genuine, cares about students, amazing lectures you'll never get bored of, funny, very experienced in her field! Cons: Only 3 tests the entire course, VERY old fashioned weird rules (no bathroom, no getting up, no electronics period), shoves political beliefs down everyones throat every class, study guide barely prepares you, hard tests
Great professor!! Class is never boring, pay attention and take good notes and youll do fine!!
There are 3 exams plus some participation points for the class grade so its essential to come to every class (miss more than 2 days and it hurts your grade). Take good notes and look for quizlets when studying for exams/final. Shes older and full of fun stories and knowledge. I recommend taking her, it may require little/some studying
Professor Fogelson is amazing!!! I looked forward to her lectures every week. Pay attention, participate, do the reading and you won't have any problems. She has a lot of field experience and is very knowledgeable. I wish I could take her for more classes. If you're looking for an easy 4.0 this class may not be for you. Class is worth the effort.
the WORST teacher ever. Do not recommend at all STAY AWAY
Entire grade is based off attendance and three exams. She specifically encourages students NOT to come to her office hours. If you're able to study for an exam fro 7 hours at a time, you'll do fine, but be prepared for A LOT of reading and A LOT of boring lectures. Also, no phones or electronics are allowed whatsoever.
Very awesome individual with lots of experience and knows what shes talking about. However, may lack certain insights into students as we are now ie wants you to be in her class to learn and be an intellectual which isnt a bad thing but most of us are here to take it and pass and move on with our educational goals and onto careers
Fogelson was one of my favorite professors! There is a lot of reading and she does not allow technology in class, but she is such an interesting person that really cares about the students. She is very opinionated but does not force you to take her side, she just tries to add perspective for people. She also provides good outlines for her exams.
She is an amazing person and truly tries to understand peoples different beliefs. She only bases your grade off of attendance and three exams, so if you are a poor test taker I would advise not taking a class with her. She also lectures completely different from the textbook so you need to read and teach yourself the material from the textbook.
The whole class period she tries to feed you a political narrative. She also is intolerant of opposing political beliefs. Most of my learning came from book work, not the lecture. She is heavy on tests. Attendance was mandatory. If you can ignore the one sided political rhetoric, if you don't mind reading, and can show up, this class is easy.
Every morning she said hello to the class and she got no reply just silence. That's pretty messed up for a professor has been teaching since 1881 and claims to have travel the world more times than she's been alive. Anyways prepare for a highly boring lecture ride, with long exams and last minute study guide. I'm so glad I passed this nightmare.
I hated her class. Her class is based off 3 tests and showing up for class. It requires alot of reading in the textbook and her lectures. Her lecture have nothing to do with the textbook and are not structured what so ever. She is ever opinionated about politics. I would not feel comfortable voicing my political opinion since it doesn't match hers.
Dr. Fogelsons class was not too bad. She is a nice person, however her lectures/notes are very disorganized since they are just on paper with an overhead. The exams were not that bad, I just had to study very hard for the vocab and LISTS! Study both the vocab and notes directly from the exam study guide and you will be okay.
My all time favorite professor at OU! I have never met a woman quite like Dr. Fogelson. Being an anthropologist she has been all over the world with so many unique stories, I could listen to her all day! She is by far one of the most difficult profs I've taken, but the challenges she pushes are much needed for adult reality.
She gives the best advice that any teacher cannot give to their students. She is for sure one of a kind and all of her lectures have to do with life experiences!
Dr. Fogelson taught her class a lot of information however she was extremely opinionated and did not express respect for her students. She also was not understanding. The tests have word for word answers that were taken in the notes so be sure to write everything down pretty specifically. I would not take her again classes again.
Great prof. Quality class.
A quality professor with tremendous knowledge about peoples of the world. Wonderful teacher
Dr fogelson was one of the best lecturers I have so far had. Really enjoyed her lectures and insights.
She is on time well prepared, lectures relevant and very interesting. Has traveled the world with fantastic experiences in odd pl aces. I loved coming to lecture and test were fair If you read the text and studied.
