This course was only worth two credits. Definitely not worth it, considering it's for non-majors.
EVIL woman! She accomplishes nothing in lecture and you need to learn all the material on your own. Very hard for a two credit class. She's just plain old mean!

shes so mean...that hitler comment was pretty accurate. she always bases her word problems on real life problems she has...like shes too cheap to buy pure maple syrup so how much cheap stuff should u mix with pure syrup to get x% syrup

First of all, Dr. Michael is extremely nice if you make the effort to talk to her. And if you come to her with your problems, she is more than willing to help. Having said that, she is not good at teaching. She has a hard time conveying her points well

she's a nice lady, but i don't suggest the course unless you already know what you are doing.
First,she's teaching a class of almost 200. You can't expect her to accomodate everyone. That's what TA's r for.Second, she's extremely nice and helpful if you go see her on your own time. Third,she gives a lot of xtra credit,so there's no reason to fail.

Dr. BK is the devil! She is possibly the worst teacher I have ever had. Hello lady! this is only a 2 credit class, not grad school. I do not recomend this class to anyone!

I had her many years ago. Perhaps she's changed, but in retrospect she is one of the best Math teachers I've ever had. It's a hard subject to teach, and 200+ lectures double that difficulty. Who knows- perhaps she is burnt-out. Great back then!!!
If it wasn't for the Undergrad TA I would have not gotten a B.
She never seems to smile, but she will help you so if you fail, it's your own fault. Don't take this course if you want to coast!
absolute worst prof ive ever had. assigned a ridiculous ammount of work(for a 2 credit course!)which covered difficult topics she didnt teach in lecture. the poor TA had to teach the class everything. 4 years later, still the hardest class i ever had

The biggest **** ever! One class period she basically called us all stupid. Her lectures have absolutely nothing to do with the homework. And o right, there is a lot of hw! It literally takes me teach anything.Also, there is book work and app problems along with the quizes almost every other rec.
I hate this class with a passion. And I have not gone in the past two months for this reason. I learn better out of the book/sleeping than listening to her lectures.
This was the worst class ever. She is a terrible teacher, she expects everyone to just know what they are doing with barely any explanation. I never had so much homework in my life. The only reason I got a C had to be because I had such a nice TA and she was very sympathetic. DON'T TAKE THIS PROF!!
HOMEWORK++. Halfway through the semester I realized that her lectures were usless and took that time to do better things with my time. However, the undergrad TAs were excellent. It didn't benefit me very much since I'm not going on to higher math. She said that the homework was a life lesson..right.
Not the greatest teacher. Doesn't fully explain everything. I slept a bit in her class. A bit much homework than I had in other classes, and you can pretty much teach yourself with teh book. Seems a bit arrogant and cocky. Exams weren't too hard for me, but the quizzes gave me trouble.
I did better than most of the class, and I still say avoid this professor at all costs. Everything I learned was either on my own or from the UTAs.
Dr.Micahels is ONE OF THE BEST PROFESSORS i've ever had. If you're willing to help yourself then she is willing to do anything in her power to help you as well. If all of you have a problem with her you have NO ONE to blame except for yourselves because EVERY TIME I ever needed help she was there.
She helps those who want to help themselves. Don't complain and say nasty things if you're not willing to take an active part in your own education, that's not fair!
Although the lectures were often times confusing, Dr. Michaels was very willing to help and is obviously very dedicated to her job.
i went to her for help, she was arrogant and told me i studied wrong and just confused me. thank god for the ta's. phil if you read this, i love you. i studied 16 hours for the exam to get a 65. i never had a problem with math before this. it's not worth the hassle.
Horrible class and even more horrible teacher. TAs were great.When you take the tests make sure you study the old tests she gives out.Lectures are pointless but you have to show up because she takes roll each time.If you can take the other algebra w/o the online tests or don't take the class at all
Very difficult prof. Lectures not helpful at all. I went to the TA office hours at least two times/wk for help. Most of the learning was on my own. Be prepared to do A LOT of work for a 2 credit class. Avoid if you can!

Considering she was teaching a "cattle car" course (required for all freshmen, etc.), she managed to keep this course interesting during lecture. She assigned in-lecture work that was relevant to both lecture material and real life. Very easy to talk to and available when you have questions.

Whatev Bev! I guess she was ok, but I hated how she never bothered to get to know anyone and just arbitrarily called out names from the roster. I think people who hate her really just hate math. She wasn't that bad.

The work load this woman assigns is ridiculous. There's no reason to be doing over 120 problems a week. Most of her lectures are spent with her drawing all over the lecture notes and getting off on tangents about canning goods or dulcimers. Asking a legitimate question often results in her circling some part of the lecture note and looking at you, as if that makes everything more clear. She also often spends the majority of her lecture on the basics, rushing through complex parts once she's out of time.
This class sucks. She acts like she is the only class we have, too much work. She talks about her 30 acres of land, instruments and her kids more than math. This class sucks
Lectures are a joke! She stumbles through the material and scribbles unreadable notes with no organization at all. You will only learn from the book and the software. Good luck, it will not be fun.
Believe it when you hear it. The work load is insane, you're required to do anywhere from 20-40 problems a night, not including any explorations or online "egrade" assignments. The random name calling for the calculator is pointless and nobody ever does it. She skips the important stuff, and focuses on the basics. Always runs out of time and expects you to just "know" what the material is. TA didn't know how to do half the material also. If you pass, THROW A PARTY
She's not as bad as she seem. Her lectures aren't neccesarily helpful, she simply goes over the text. Recitations makes the subject easier. If you attempt to reach out to her with your problems, she will indeed help you. Be active in her class to benefit.
Beverly Michael... wow what a piece of work. By far the worst teacher ever. She is obsessed w/ farms and her magnificent daughters. She gives way to much homework and online **** and she doesn't teach AT ALL! The TA's are even confused half the time. If there is a worse word than "waste" she's it! Absolutely DO NOT TAKE HER!
It's very simple: she is not a good teacher. She rambles on and on and barely covers half the material in a class. As a result, she finds difficulty getting any respect from her students and this just makes her angry. She can't teach, she can't lecture, and she ends up leaving you with more questions than you had going into the class.
HORRIBLE. If you don't like math to begin with, Dr Michael will make you want to jump out a window rather than dealing with her. She has an attitude and rarely answers important emails-- only the simple ones, where she types fewer than 5 words in response. I do so much work for this class and I only have an 80%.

This class definitely makes me want to quit school. Beverly Michael gives way too much homework. Math Labs are Hell on Earth. Her help at her office hours is very limited and she is very condescending. Avoid her if possible. If not, brace yourself. Just take a sleeping bag with you and move into the MAC.
Lots of work and you need to visit the MAC a lot because the lectures are not that great. I wouldn't say she is mean in the least.
This class sucks...the lecures are dry and boreing...dr michael seems like she might be a nice person deep down inside but thats not a side the class sees often...u will definitely want to skip lectures but i did, however this is not really a good idea as the lecture info is more necessary than the the book

very unclear in lecture and makes mistakes all the time while doing examples and when someone tries to correct her, she doesn't know what they are talking about. she gives a lot of homework as well.

Embarassing teacher. Graded final project with a rubric that she never felt the need to share with us. Boring. Unresponsive. Gave 10-15 hours of HW per week which isn't fun when you're teaching full time and taking 3 other classes at night. She is literally one of the worst teachers i've ever had. Ironically the others are also Pitt math..

"Have fun teaching yourself," is right. The first day of lecture this year, we listened to Bev talk about how she plays her dulcimer ("like a guitar that you play on your lap") on vacation -- to a lecture hall of about 200 kids. The class is a waste of time, the woman is completely ambiguous when it comes to explaining anything. Horrible prof.
Just awful. The class is for non-majors (aka, people that do not like math) and we have about 100 questions per week and online work. The tests are irrelevant to the book questions we have so much practice doing, and there are too many questions compared to the 50 minute time limit. Basically, the class is useless, frusterating, and time-consuming.
Nice lady. Hard class. I had to do roughly 2-3 hours of home work 3 times a week. It was worth it cuz i got an A but i hate math thats why i took this class. Its for non-math non-science majors. Tests are quite difficult and cover EVERYTHING that is taught up to that point. Would NOT recommend this course unless you have too much free time.
Do not take this professor if you can aviod her. She teaches the class (for non-math majors) as if when you took algebra in HS you still remembered everything. She skips steps that if you did not learn, the lesson will not make sense. The class moves very fast & barley gives you time to study since you are busy with all the book work & online HW.
It was not like any Algebra class I ever had and it required an obscene amount of work. I'm an art major --thus, I wanted to kill myself. But I worked hard, got help, tried to talk to Bev and guess what....it didn't help at all. She's a horrible teacher, unhelpful, rude, unapproachable, and I hate her with the fire of a thousand suns.

She was a challange, but the final was easy for us. She just needs to work on her handwriting, but otherwise she's just a teacher with high expectations.
If you take this class, you will most likely take suicide into consideration. If you think this class is in any way related to high school algebra, or that you may do well because "it can't be that bad", I recommmend you consider other options. Made me want to rip the hair out of my head. Beverly Michael is a terrible teacher, and you will regret taking this course for sure.
This is my senior semester. I transferred here, and I have taken about 50 courses. This is, by far, the worst class I have ever taken. This is, by far, the worst professor I have ever had. You pay 3x the amount you should for a textbook (because it's hers) and she does not teach well, while giving more work than all my other classes combined.
Aaahhhhhhhhhhhh! This woman is soooo frustrating. I hope she gets fired! She is possibly the worst teacher and person I have ever met! I have met no one who has in the least bit liked her. I took AP classes in high school but somehow she has managed to make Algebra nearly impossible for me to understand.
basically, just don't take any of this women's classes. it's a giant waste of time (but what math isn't?). she's rude and gives way too much work to people that are very disinterested in math.
So I thought this class would be easy right? Come on I had taken Trig and survived in High school I could handle Algerbra. UMM Nope. This class had twice the amount of work from any of my other classes and she thinks that we are supposed to know all the material already, well I wouldn't be in the class if I already knew the material now woould I?

The worst Professor I've ever had. The lectures have nothing to do with the homework, so be prepared to teach yourself. I was in a car accident and missed 2 weeks of school (an entire chapter and a half) and she made me take the exam anyway. Takes attendence every lecture. Go to recitation - that was the only thing that saved me.
I will keep this simple and quick. On the very first exam in a basic algebra cflass, the class average was a 61.8%. It was so bad I was excited for an awesome curve. Nope. No curve at all. She failed over 60% of the class and apparently doesn't think anything of it.
Dr Michael is not as bad as she seems. Its true, 60% of the class did fail, but now we know how to prepare for the next one. She is approachable, I have talked to her many times. She helps in a lot of ways: online quizzes exactly as they really are, practice tests, notes, and study guides. She is difficult but if you really try, you will be fine.
This is the worst class. She treats the class like we are in elementary school. I thought when i got to college, the professors would not have to resort to raising their hand at the begining of class to make the class be quiet. There is also a lot of busy work on the internet learning source. also my recitation teacher was an idiot.
Be prepared to work! Homework includes: Written (takes a ridiculous amount of time), Online Wiley Plus, Explorations, and take notes. Quizzes in recitation, and exams in class. She makes tons of mistakes during lecture and is very unclear. Avoid if you can!! Save yourself and your sanity! She is horrible at teaching you. Be prepared to self teach.
Dr. Michael is an extremely nice person, I like her a lot. She teaches it's just that people do not listen to her, the class is so disruptive but if you actually pay attention she gives you EXACTLY what is on the test, if you don't copy every assignment you'll do well. She loves her job, and I like her a lot--and I DO NOT like math!
Dr. Michael is so far the worst proffesor I have had. Although she knows the material(after all, she is one of the writers of our text book), she sucks in teaching it. She's very scattered and forgets to go over things a lot, leaving all of the class confused and panicked to get work done withough knowing how.Way too much work.DON'T TAKE HER CLASS!

Prof Michaels tests were far too long and her methods of teaching were confusing. The class hw was heavy and there were two tests, a final, online hw, book hw and quizzes.
Avoid if possible, but if you cannot it is not the end of the world. She's definitely one of the worst professors at Pitt, however if you are willing to work, she will be willing to work with you. She gives way too much homework- it's as if she knows everyone taking the class hates math and wants to punish them. Nice person- horrible professor.
This is the worst professor I've ever had, which is sad, because she's really nice, but DON'T TAKE HER! I had the highest test score on the first two tests in our 120 person lecture and I did not have time to finish the tests. The average scores were about 65% and she assigns more unproductive homework than you will have time in the week to do.

Professor Michael is the sweetest woman I have ever met not to mention the fact that she's extremely intelligent, an amazing teacher and I'd totally take her class again in a heartbeat.

You can work as hard as you want but Bev still isn't going to pass you. The exams are impossible and get ready to do math homework every waking moment of your day. Very discouraging class.

You will not be able to buy a used book for this class. Since she wrote the book and included a online homework CD, which you do not get with the used version, you will be forced to buy a new one :) She is not an absolutely horrible teacher if you understand math. I would still never recommend her, though.

AWFUL teacher, assigns a incomprehensible amount of homework for non-math majors. Pushes her own book, IE requires you to buy her approx 160 dollar book that she helped write. Fails miserably at being amusing/funny. Lastly is computer illiterate but insists on using a smart board in lecture. All in all, never take this woman's class!

Taking her class was the worst mistake of my life. I can not urge you enough to get out while you can. She assigns way more homework than is even almost necessary and is impossible to understand. While the concepts are easy, she makes it difficult.
I cannot stand this woman. I'm curently working on something we didn't learn in class because she didn't get to it, most likely due to the fact that she was too busy erasing her millions of algebra mistakes so she didn't have time to finish teaching it to us. She's unhelpful and the amount of homework is ridiculous. Avoid her or regret it.
Drop this class if possible! She means well, but she is just a horrible teacher. She is condescending yet makes a lot of mistakes. She does not understand why some people do not comprehend math the same way she does. She wrote the textbook and therefore assigns profuse amounts of homework (plus online homework).
The tests are decent, but the amount of homework is RIDICULOUS. This class is for non math-science majors and she gives you enough homework to sink a ship- aka too much for non math-science majors. She makes a lot of mistakes in class and her lectures are boring, but mandatory to attend. Save yourself while you can!!!!! Get out!!!!!
i know you're reading all these comments and thinking, it can't be that bad. i thought the same thing, but it really is that bad. the amount of homework is outrageous. you will have no life b/c of all the work involved. plus, she's very rude and goes off about the most pointless things, including a lecture about giving up stuff for lent.
You are thinking college ALGEBRA can't be that bad. WRONG. Unless you enjoy doing multiple HOURS of homework a DAY and like living in the MAC get out NOW. its not worth it. and i'm sure their is an easier way to get the credit. Add/Drop if you're already in it other wise find something else. I promise it will be the best decision of your life.

she is TERRIBLE. i feel dumb 4 not checking this website b4 signing up. i dropped it today before it was 2 late. She gives WAY 2 much homework in the book (3 sections/week) along with the mandatory 3 sets on the computer a week! 3 sets of homework are worth a total of 10 points and yet a 15 question test is worth 100!? get out while u can!
I was a TA for this class -- I felt so bad for my students. There is SO MUCH HOMEWORK! She assigned about 90 problems per week, plus the online stuff, plus these pointless "explorations." She was nice to me, but I hear not to students. We cover eight chapters in 14 weeks, which is far too fast for algebra I. Take MATH 0031 with Deriggi instead.
Do not ignore previous comments - they're all true. Way to much work for the "math for non-majors," she can't teach to save her life. I did pretty well in this class (teaching myself), but most were failing. Attendance is mandatory, Dr. Michael is an idiot, and the TAs were really nice, but completely unhelpful, mostly because she's so unorganized!

I was skeptical at first, but after being in the class for a few weeks I realized it wasn't that bad. There is a lot of work, but for me that helps me understand better. She makes mistakes on a lot of stuff, but tries to make things really clear. Does help in office hours. Is pretty nice. Definitely recommend this class if you dont mind the work.
She is incredibly demanding. I'm not going to lie on that. But she really seems like a very respectable, nice and incredibly smart woman. Some things in her class were interesting, but most weren't. I was in the class with like 100+ people, which didn't really help. But do the math labs, study your homework (so do it right) and you'll be ok.
She's pretty bad. I didn't mean to take her, she replaced our original prof at the last second. She pretty much states rules verbatim from the book then does a few lame examples. Also, she's kind of intimidating. You usually have to teach yourself math to an extent, but this is ridiculous. An A is achievable, but prepare to kill yourself for it.
These comments are HI-larious. You know why? I had her in 1990-91 and not a damned thing has changed. She was clueless and useless then, assigned ridiculous amounts of homework and had what appeared to be 0 interest in the students. There was no other non-math major option then.. I wound up satisfying the algebra requirement w/ programming class
Boring lectures, but she's a nice woman, mostly, though very logical and computer-like. Teaches directly out of the book. Assignments get confusing because they are all announced at the start of the semester, due on a set schedule, but then more are added due at random times. A lot of work due each week.
Rediculous amount of homework. More than 2 hours of it per single class period. Most assignments are way to drawn out with little to learn from. She is very difficult to follow along with in class, and on multiple occasions assigns homework and quizzes that are due before she even teaches the subjects.
In essence this teacher has lost her way. She has no regard for her students, only thinking that myriad amounts of math work per night is the way to teach. She doesn't teach, rather she makes mistakes and does not aid us in learning calculus. I've heard that students from years past also feel this way, so why hasn't something been done?

Her lecture notes were helpful and easy to follow but the exams were unnecessarily difficult. She took one exam while were were taking it to make up the answer key and it took her longer than 50 minutes to finish. Repetitive homework assignments and not a very helpful curve. If not a math major, DO NOT TAKE.

I took AP Calc in high school and got an A. I am a math major. I took this class, got a C- and have to repeat it now. 100% thanks to Beverly Michael. Cant teach, drowns you in homework, picks the absolute hardest problems to put on Exams, then doesnt curve them even when the class average is like a 40%. Plain and simple: dont take her
I picked Math 25 b/c its supposed to be the easiest way to satisfy the math requirement. I should of known when the ADVISING center told me NOT to take it BECAUSE she was teaching it!! Fortunately I got out in time and switched into a "harder" class with a prof who loves to teach. Unfortunately Michael supervises the way that course is run.
I pay too much money for credits to be taught by such a horrible teacher. She was rude in emails and hated answering questions. I don't understand why schools allow people like this to teach. Barely passed her class (thank God). When I'm shelling out $3000 per class I expect a teacher who cares and treats me like a person.
Doesn't answer questions well, and seems to get confused and her numbers mixed up easily. Tests are kind of hard. There's a decent amount of homework to.
I have no idea why other people's comments are so bad. I really like her, patient, decent and answer questions well. Her homework might be somewhat more than others, but it helps you for the exams.
Lectures were fairly helpful and clear. Prof did a good job of explaining the material. Her major fault is how unapproachable she is. She doesn't seem like she wants students asking her questions, or going to her for help, but she gets mad when they don't participate in class. She is very intimidating.
Not bad, just boring. She did offer help a lot but she would put things on the test that we never went over.
Don't be intimidated by the interviews; she can come across as condescending sometimes but she really is concerned about how her students are learning, is generally a kind person, and prepares you well for the final. Just be prepared to do a LOT of homework for the class. ~60 problems per week isn't unusual for her, not including online work.
Boring, but definitely knows calc well, and can teach. Exams are much harder than quizzes.
She is a very nice person. But she expects way to much from a college student. I thought her class would be a breeze, I was wrong. She wrote the book so it doesn't help. I suggest someone else
Dr. Michael is hands down the worst professor I have ever had in my college career. She is an awful teacher, does not explain concepts well, gives an unreasonable amount of homework and doesn't care if her students are learning. Avoid taking any of Dr. Michael's classes like the plague.
one of the easiest teachers for calc at pitt, she prints out notes for you to follow along with and has practice tests up that are nearly IDENTICAL to the actual midterms, but the class is pretty boring even for calc 1
She is honestly awful. I expected an easy A, but had to work extremely hard for a C and was miserable the entire time. I never believed anyone when they said to get out, but seriously don't take her if you can avoid it.
Luckily she is retiring, but she was an awful teacher. Made constant mistakes in class, gave barely any partial credit on tests and picks the hardest questions for tests.
Good teacher who makes you work for your grade, much like every calculus professor at pitt.
I used to be awful at math, but I managed to get an A in her class (and a 100 on the final). There was a lot of work involved, but the tests weren't hard (there was always extra credit), and the homework wasn't bad as long as you paid attention in class & did Wiley+ online work. It's a lot of work for a basic class, but you just have to work hard.
