One of the most kindhearted and helpful prof I have ever had in the 3 yrs I have been here. I love her open discussions in class.
Awesome lady! She is so strong and very inspiring. She actually changed my mind on the death penalty, and believe me that, you can't change my mind easily. Also enjoyed her upper level classes.
She's tough but still fair. You work hard in her classes but you learn so much. I think this class should be required. I like that she requires more than multiple choice exams in her classes
I can't believe that I actually love research because she is such a great teacher. She makes a difficult subject easy to learn. You can;t miss her class though and you have to read the material.

BEST sociology class i've ever had...and I'm a senior.
awesome teacher!
She is such a funny teacher. I would take her again ANY day. Just read the material and pay attention and you'll do great. Didn't do excessive studying just listened and took notes. VERY FUNNY
this is a great prof. drama queen, but great. do the reading, open your mind, and take notes, and you'll get an A. if you goof off or skip class, you're in for trouble. she's fair and always ready to help.
Easy class. Did not provide a safe environment for students to voice opinions. She dismisses opinions different from hers as wrong auomatically. Contradicted herself on many occasions including on stereotyping. Assumes every student is uber-enthused about the class. Can be difficult to listen to...
Awesome professor. I took her for intro. and decided to take her for an upper level course on disability just because she's so awesome. Pay no attention to anything negative said because she's really cool and sincere...absolutely not a drama queen and knows her stuff so very well. I learned so much in both of her classes

She is super awesome and a great proffessor. She goes off on tangents that may or may not be related to the class, but they are still very interesting. Plus she is a great personal friend and there to listen if you need.
Good teacher, she knows her stuff. She also allows you to do extra credit. To me the book has noithing to do what we talk about in class, just take good notes and pay attention.
She is an okay teacher. She loves sociology, and knows it foward and backwards.
She is really easy. The lectures got kind of boring but she shows videos that are interesting. She got us involved with polls and class discussions too. All you have to study for the tests are vocab. from the book and read over your notes.
Very uncaring about her students and her idea of fairness is unjust.
I liked the subject but her teaching was just okay. Not relevant to the book at all so take notes. She talks about herself ALOT. Overall, it was an okay experience.
Overall waste of time, waste several classes talking about herself, tries to cram 3 chap into two class periods, not helpful ,treats students like kindergardeners , tests are over 75 % of what she talks about and the book other 25% unheard of ,out of all the professors ive had she is by far the worse Do Not Take If you care about your grades !!!!!!
Good, interesting, helpful---She gives good examples to help you understand the material, but you better read too.
Easy A if you read, do the work, and listen in class. Easy F if you don't. She expects you to learn the material. That's what you're there for. Gives a lot of real life examples from her own research and experiences that helps the abstract stuff in the book make sense. Her classes are interested, but make you work.
Very nice, calm, and outgoing lady. Her tests are easy if you skim the designated chapters, memorize the vocabulary from the chapter and understand them. There is extra credit. You get to skip the final if you average an A on her tests (she later changed it to A and B).Book important ant start of semester, lecture notes at the end of the semester.
Great teacher. Calm and loves to help out her students. Notes dont really matter too much. but are still important. most important is the textbook. skim through it and learn the vocab. study notes. If you study, you will do fine. she gives TONS of EC. esp if you come to class everday so dont skip!
The book is your best friend. This professor not very helpful or understanding. Found her to be very argumentative. Don't waste your time if you don't have to.
Dr. Stiles is fabulous. She cares about you whether you are a Sociology major or not. She's the best. Tests come straight from textbook. Offers a lot of bonus work.
Stiles is a great prof! She tells fun stories and keeps the class interested and participating. There are only 3 exams and she gives plenty of extra credit. Stiles knows her stuff and wants to do everything she can to help the student learn rather than just to get grades. Very friendly and helpful.
The book needs to be by your side at all time. She kinda get off topic a lot. She doesn't really teach what is going to be on the test .
Dr. Stiles is inspiring, motivational and the best instructor I have ever had in a class room. Her class is not easy but you will leave with a wealth of knowledge.
I am taking Gender in Society and I am enjoying the topics but this teacher gets off topic a lot. I'm learning more outside of class than what I am going to her class. She also allows students to get way off topic which gets us nowhere and is really annoying because I learn nothing.
She's a good teacher that occasionally goes on tangential topics to prove a point. Makes uninteresting material interesting through real-life examples of sociological occurrences in daily life.
This was a great class (Gender and Society). She is very passionate about this subject and her goal is to make you passionate as well. Don't be scared to take this class because of the title (even if you're a guy!). She makes it interesting and enjoyable. ATTENDANCE and READING are absolutely necessary to succeed, though, so be warned!
I have her right now for Intro to Sociology, and I would say she is the best professor I've had at this school. She is extremely passionate about sociology and is willing to help you one-on-one. Instead of just lecturing, she makes sense of everything by putting it into stories. You'll need to read your textbook to do well though.
This professor is so disorganized! She comes frazzled wearing what looks like wrinkled sleep clothes and rushes through the lecture because she has a lot to cover but then goes off on tangents talking more about her personal life than the material. Never in her office for outside help and gets mad if you question her or disagree. horrible. avoid.
Doesn't really teach. She just talks about her life stories which are not on the tests. Basically you just have to read because her notes are pointless. She gives tons of extra credit though.
Lectures don't relate to the test. Read the chapters. Extra credit given, some just for showing up to class. Gets off topic, a lot.
She is very talkative and caring about her students. I am still shocked that I feel totally comfortable going to the chair of my department for anything I need, and she isn't even my advisor! She took time to talk to me for hours multiple times throughout the semester. She is not is. You do have to read the book and attend class.
Go to class!! She appreciates it when you attend and participate. The tests aren't bad as long as you read. Very few assignments that aren't very difficult and are well explained. I would take again!
Dr. Stiles is one of my favorite teachers here. She is incredibly helpful and willing to work with you if you go to her with problems you might be having. I highly recommend taking any (or all) of her online classes. Not only were they engaging, but the tests were fairly easy as well. Just read and participate!
I really loved Dr. Stiles. She's very understanding if you come to her with an issue. Her lectures were really interesting to me, I learned a lot. Attendance is VERY important. Her tests are straight from the book so make sure you read!
I HATED THIS CLASS! She gives pop quizzes at least once a week, if not more. There are usually 6-8 articles PLUS 1-2 textbook chapters assigned per week, and all of it is necessary for quizzes. It was extremely hard finding enough time to do everything she requires. Instead of helping, she is rude to students who do poorly on quizzes.
She's an ok as a person, but she's awful as a teacher. She doesn't teach instead she spends the whole class time talking about herself. She has you watch videos that will be used for three questions on the test. The book is hard to study for the test. If you want to pass don't take Stiles.
Doctor Stiles was my favorite sociology professor! I just loved her to death because she's real and up front about everything. You have to read for her class because she does pop quizzes, Essay tests, and will give extra credit when you attend class sometimes. Her lectures are always good and her students have the opportunity to express themselves.
Took her class online was the worse thing I could've put myself through. The test were so hard even with the book!! She expects you to get answer from where ?? Because they are not in the book!! Also she has discussions which are easy and she has these projects that are graded hard. Never again will I take her or recommend her.
As a class about family violence, it is very heavy at times. Stiles does a great job covering it. It's a fairly easy course if you read and attend class. OCCASIONALLY, the content gets too personal and feels like a therapy session rather than a lecture. Thankfully, this doesn't happen very often.
Stiles was the worst teacher I have EVER experienced. I took her Family Violence class online and I really wish they had a better teacher for that class because the information is great, but the teacher is HORRIBLE! Most won't post answers til last minute, and then you are held accountable for reading at least 75% of those responses, even at work.
Love this class. I might even major in sociology because of her
The disability class is the best sociology class I have had. She really helps us to understand and cares that we learn. She goes above and beyond, but you have to read too.
Dr. Stiles is the best professor I have ever had. She is taught me to see things differently than I had been "programmed" to see. I have since taken many classes, sociology and otherwise and I always go back to the way she handled our class with dignity and respect and she got that in return. She was tough but fair and expected you to study.
She is straight up honest with us. More professors should be like her. She really helps us to learn the material. I love her classes.
I think she is the best professor that I have had so far (second semester). I may even change my major
I recommend taking every class she teaches, but especially the gender class
I absolutely love having her as a professor. She is willing to go the extra mile for you. I have literally called her 3 days before a term paper is due and asking if she would mind reviewing what I have and she would call me back and discuss it with me over the phone. Her Gender class and Deviance class are amazing. I have taken 6 of her classes.
Best Prof. in sociology.
She was a really good professor and knew what she was talking about. So honest, I wish other professors were like her.
Theres a ton of reading. You had to read a chapter before every class, the chapters was usually around 50 pages. There was a quiz once a week. Test were okay if you read the book and the additional required readings in D2L. The tests were 50% multiple choice and 50% essay questions. She gets off topic a lot when she lectures.
You have to read but she does show good videos and youtubes to help. I learned so much in this class
Dr. Stiles is a wonderful professor who wants her students to do well by earning the grade they deserve while also learning valuable information. When she says to read, you read. Every reading assignment will have a quiz for the next day. If you read and show up to class you will pass. She even gives bonus points randomly if you show up!
Love the way she teaches! She loves telling personal stories and connects the material to real-life situations. She made me look at everything through a sociological lens.
I just loved the class. Im thinking of switching my major to sociology now.
This class was a bit challenging, but I took it again a second time and got an A
Hands down my favorite professor!! She does have pop quizzes, but tells you ahead of time to expect a quiz over the readings. You will be required to read articles or a book outside of class depending on the course. She is very clear and upfront on her grading policies. Her classes are rewarding and her teaching fits me well! Such a smart woman..
Dr. Stiles is one of the best professors I have ever taken. Her class does require a lot of reading but at least you learn the material. As long as you go to class and read, you're fine.
I have taken multiple classes from Dr. Stiles, and it is fascinating how she tailors each class for the resources she can leverage. In Consumer, she uses much more visual media than in her other classes. Rather than filler (as videos have been for other prof's), they are a fully integrated components, adding significant depth to the lectures.
Dr. Stiles' classes are always interesting and challenging! She ensures that students have multiple means of understanding the course material through readings, lectures, short videos, and films. It's clear that she is interested in the material she teaches, and that she cares about her students. Best professor I've ever had!
Dr. Stiles is beyond one of my favorite teachers at MSU. Shes always there for the students, even when shes busy she still makes time to help out. Ive learned more from Dr. Stiles in the few classes ive Taken with her than I have my whole time at MSU because she is just so thorough with her teaching. Definitely will be taking her again.
If you don't agree with her, especially politically, the class is a nightmare. She is degrading to your view and makes disparaging remarks. The only reason I gave her a D and not an F is that she is a fair grader at least.
Stiles is a great person and is very caring to all, but her class is so difficult. Her tests are based on the textbook. Multiple chapters are tested at once, so if you cant retain information from reading, you will be struggling all year.
Dr. Stiles was an average professor. She is a tough grader when it comes to discussion posts. She makes you post an initial response plus respond SUBSTANSIVELY to 3 other students. Her idea of substantive and mine were two different things. You have to read the chapters and watch all the videos or you wont do well on the exams.
Shes super nice and caring! really gets into depth about all of her topics and has class discussions after videos that help you have a better understanding of what your learning. She allows opportunities for extra credit too. Overall one of the best teachers ive ever had.
No Compassion! I lost internet connection during an exam and her reply was get more reliable internet connection even though this was the 2nd semester I had her and this was the 1st time anything like this had happened even though she makes grading mistakes ALL the time. For example you have to read 4/5 of discussion posts but you NEVER get credit.
As long as you are okay with reading you will LOVE her classes, great material and great teacher - she really cares about teaching what is important to our society and is more than understanding to students, put in the effort and you will get so much out of her classes, highly recommend!
grading system makes no sense on dicussions, she will give a 70 for missing 1 response, even if everything else was fine. there were times where i wrote terrible last minute posts, read all responses, and also made a 70. like lady are you judging my knowledge or looking for points to deduct? her feedback are like insults than helpful tips. AVOID!
She has a world of experience snd really works to help everyone do well.
This was my best class. This class has made me rethink my major. I liked how she made examples of her own life and experiences to help us understand the class material. She is humble and honest too.
Great classes. I try to take every class she teaches. I learn so much and I feel like everyone should know what Im learning.
Shes the most helpful sociology professor. You can tell that she loves it too. Shes really fair. If you just come to class and read you will do great.
She is a great professor who knows her stuff! Super interesting class and you can't help but learn a lot about our society we live in. Very accessible after class hours and is very upfront and honest with you.
Dr. Stiles is a great professor and especially for incoming freshman. As an upperclassman taking this course I was able to see how caring she is and how she is to new students. Guiding them about college life while still showing them the ins and outs of sociology was really nice to see. I highly recommend taking this class.
Online class is hard, tests are on 3 chapters that contain atleast 70 pages in each chapt. very hard to retain information. Told me the final would be easier for the students and at last minute told me that was not for my class. Very annoying. Although she does email back fast. Reading 4/5 discuss. boards are so annoying and you dont get credit
I loved this class. Stiles is very well practiced with teaching and she shows in in all of her classes. The one thing that she did that confused me was she should get off topic very easily in class and I would be unsure what I needed notes on or not. Also good to note that she is very clear that if you miss any classes at all you might not pass.
This is what I liked about Dr. Stiles, her discussions made me think about topics for weeks afterwards. She is a fair professor but this isn't an "easy A" class. You are going to need to put in some effort. I really look up to her, she is an inspiration for the students. I wish that all of my professors were like Dr. Stiles.
Professor Stiles is very knowledgable about the material but she is not great at delevering said material. Her lectures drag on and she stumbles her way through quite often. She isn't a bad teacher but she does talk a lot about herself trying to relate it back to the topic but it just doesn't connect. She also speaks to us as if we're dumb.
This professor is very disrespectful in her feedback. I was taking this class as an elective and she graded as this was an advanced class. In her feedback she will constantly remind you that she has been here for a very long time. She is uncompassionated-will not meet with you if you have a problem and talks to you as if you are very dumb. Terrible
This professor is a horrible professor she should not be a professor at all. she is very RACIST, disrespectful and awful.
I've heard that she's terrible to take online, but in-person she's not all bad. Her lectures can be a bit annoying, repetitive, and get off track, but as long as you take notes you'll do fine in her class. You don't need to buy the textbook; she'll tell you that everyone that fails didn't read but honestly I didn't read at all and still got an A.
This class is 50/50. I took it online and although it has a lot of pros it is very difficult. Discussion post every week, she will deduct points if not written her way. She drops the lowest test grade, and lets you use notes during the tests. Test are very hard though.
She is full of herself. She gets off topic every lecture talking about her life. Her tests are worded very oddly and are pretty difficult. If you read and attend lecture you will receive an 80 at most on her test. Attendance is mandatory and will call you out for being on your phone.
SO MUCH READING. I took her disability class and as someone who has a learning disability, I feel she doesn't give very many opportunities besides quizzes to show you know the material. I personally find it hard to read 40-80 pages for each class and then take a quiz that is short answer. She fails to remember we are taking other classes.
She talks more about herself than actually sociology
She's super nice and grades everything pretty generously. She made me really interested in sociology when it's not something I would have usually looked twice at.
She is confusing. Asks for a lot of attendance with online classes! So far I have taken her course a few times so I will go with a different instructor next time. I emailed her for clarification with an assignment and she never answered my question.
Seems more interested in giving out a LOT of work instead of helping to gain understanding and learn. So much work and discussions are given, there is no time for other class work.
Please do not take her for any class if you don't have to. She is a very tough grade and doesn't provide feedback. She treats her class as if it's the only class you have. Lots of books and material to learn to learn from. She don't care much about her students at all. She needs to retire ASAP!!!
Quite literally the worst class Ive taken at MSU. She's insanely adamant on reading the text book WHIVH IS LIKE 100 PAGES per exam. Only has a few other assignments so if you fail the exam, you're pretty much done for. Only lectures for like 20 minutes, doesn't give you any kind of review, study guide, lecture notes. So it's every man for himself.
I love Beverly. She is awesome!
I overall did enjoy her class but it was kind of hard. You HAVE to go to class but she does make the lectures engaging and interesting. You do have to do well on the tests to pass bc she doesn't have much other grades. If you like to read and take good notes I'd say to take, if you're a bad test taker I'd suggest finding someone else.
she needs to retire. does not give you any kind of material to study with, not even a powerpoint or lecture notes. she acts like this is the only class you have, an into class should not be this difficult.
