This guy is the worst math professor I have ever had. Besides the fact he speaks poor english, he does not know how to teach math on a basic level to make it understandable. If I were going to take a math class I would avoid this yahoo!!
He is one of the worst teachers ever. He is ridiculously hard and gives unecessary and confusing homework
He's one of the coolest profs I've had for a math class. He went out of his way to help us out and made the course fun. I had heard that he was tough but the guy's got a heart, not to mention he's kinda sexy with all his hair. I'd recommend him for the 130 and 131 sequence.
For a mathphobic person like me, this course was intimidating. But it turned out to be the best math class I've ever had. I learned more in one semester from Dr.Sriraman than I have in all my other math courses. It was the most worthwhile class I've taken in a long time. Dr. Sriraman is like a genuis...he speaks ten different languages!!
Looking back at the course now that I finished my student teaching, it sure is worth working your butt off. Professor Sriraman does an excellent course and really makes you understand the concepts behind the math. He's got a great sense of humor.
crazy professor but he sure knows his stuff. makes you really work in a subtle way.i personally got a lot out of the class- but archival research for history of math is difficult and may not suit everyone's taste. Side note-he's sexy...
this prof is very eccentric. i took the course for the writing requirement but ended up learning interesting history. Wouldn't recommend the class if you like structure and rigid assignments. the prof is very easy going but he expects a lot from whatever you are assigned to do. He's a sweet guy to boot...I recommend it for the writing requirement!
Great class if you can get into it. He totally rocks-makes the most boring Calc concept come to life with stories and techniques from history. Some of his assignments can be ****in hard but its well planned and worth doin.
i was completely overwhelmed by the research paper assignment and thought I'd fail the class. When I approached Dr.Sriraman for help, he went out of his way to provide resources and books to help me find a topic and put a decent paper together. One of the nicest math professors i've ever had...
Hands down- the best professor I have ever had!
expects a lot out of you- but the most inspiring prof i've ever had
totally rocks
Quite unique in his teaching style with emphasis on collaborative learning. Very kind Professor
An excellent professor who will broaden your perspective on Math, life, and homework. His class isn't hard if you keep up, ask for help, and come to lecture.
great course
he's an awe inspiring prof- his command of archaic languages like Old Persian and Sanskrit is amazing. Always had nothing but motivational words for those of us who were overwhelmed and struggling with the material. I took this class just because it sounded interesting and learned a lot.
This geometry course totally rocks- I recommend him for this course. He actually MAKES you learn the Euclid's Elements. I had heard he could be tough with the assignments and made you write and DO mathematics but having had him as a prof, it's worth the effort. Towards the end of the semester we had people reeling propositions numbers like lawyers!
This course completely changed my view of geometry. The Professor's exams are difficult but designed to make students learn the material. It's a very non traditional student centered class, and for lazy wimps. Most of my group members thought we learned a lot. Dr. Sriraman is a gem.
I don't think M439 is for lazy wimps. Most of us spent 30+ hours on each of the take home exams. The questions were difficult and took a lot of thinking and detailed constructions or proof. If you're a lazy wimp stay away from his courses. You'll work your ass off, but learn something worthwhile. The prof is a cool guy.
I started to understand why and how we did proofs in mathematics after I took the class. The professor didn't use the book as much as I would have liked but his lectures covered the material well. He has a great sense of humor.
This prof is brilliant, eccentric, witty and hard to keep up with at times. I know a lot more about math than I ever did from this course and look forward to more math courses because of him.
The instructor provided a lot of feedback on the homework and projects. Exams were not too difficult and based on lecture materials. The book of Numbers is not easy to read but the instructor provided the explanations and filled the gaps well. I enjoyed the course
learned many technical aspects of history of maths
Entertaining professor but he expects students to master many of the computational techniques from the history of mathematics. The book 2 Millenia of Mathematics is difficult to read. Course lectures covered material from 3 chapters. The cool part was using Original works for logs (Napier) and work on integrals related to mapmaking (Mercator).
Delightful course - thoroughly enjoyed it. We got through the first 5 books of the Elements! The course came together at the end with seven lectures on Gauss' construction of the heptadecagon. Dr. Sriraman tied together number theory, complex analysis, group theory, and trigonometery- great capstone experience for me in my last college course.
The project assigned to me was very useful and helped me a lot with my CS major, particularly with understanding computing irrationals.
I loved this professor- he made things simple and easy for a math traumatized person like me. The projects were fun and related to geometry. I would take him again if I could!
I am senior citizen with a background in computer science who took this course to expand and sharpen my mind. Both things happened. The professor was generous to let me take the course even though I could not afford to audit it. I would strongly suggest to regular students to go to class and pay attention to his lectures which are brilliant.
He hated the textbook used for this course because of its price and un coherent way in which it introduced the concepts. Dr. Sriraman expects students to do their reading and be prepared for the tasks he assigns. I feel better prepared as a future teacher not dependent on some stupid book to tell me what to do because I can think for myself!
Great teacher and a very kind person. He tries to accommodate students that have learning difficulties. Attending class really helps to keep up with the material. I wish I had him for 135.
saved my last semester
wonderful teacher
lectures are inspirational
Dr. Sriraman is the kindest professor I have ever had at UM. I learned a lot in this class and even changed my attitude of not liking math because he made it clear why it was important to know the material we were covering.
Professor Sriraman is really funny- making math fun and entertaining. I also learned a lot of math! He holds you accountable and lets you know if you are slacking off.
His technique left me crying at times, but I also struggle with math. Common core is what you learn and I was born before that came into play. So its all new to me and hard. Take as many notes as you can. He wants you to pass and gets upset if you don't, and will call you out for it. Answers all questions and then some. A very happy guy.
Super smart and hilarious if you can catch his sense of humor which is subtle. It was obvious he really cared we learned the material. the tests were long but if you took notes and kept up it wasn't too hard. Very positive teacher.
It was obvious he really cared we learned the material. the tests were long but if you took notes and kept up it wasn't too hard. Very positive teacher.
Straight up wants you to succeed in the class and this makes a big difference to people like me who walk into a math class thinking i'm not going to be able to do this. The homework was thoughtful and went over which helped me a lot.
Expects a lot out of students but is willing to help!
Makes boring and difficult material accessible. I never thought spherical geometry could be done axiomatically until I took this class.
I was floundering on my research paper for this class and struggling. The professor helped me out by pointing and giving the right resources and I ended up really enjoying an assignment I dreaded for the class. Dr. Sriraman gave 3 rounds of feedback on the papers for the class. I highly recommend him for this course.
A lively teacher!
I loved his number theory class although he covered an insane amount of material in one semester. I compared our class to classes at Calpoly and we got through a semester and a half of material here. The professor has a unique style - makes things that are difficult seem really easy and understandable!
Loved his class - turned me into a math major!
He is a wonderful teacher and cares about your success. However he makes you work for it. The lectures had a lot of old-school computational detail that I did not expect but learned to appreciate since this was how many results were derived in the history of math.
The professor put a lot of emphasis on Euclidean constructions and the class covered the first 6 books of the Elements with Spherical geometry also done axiomaticaly. He holds you accountable for really learning the material and designs tests and labs that loop over into the material. I feel prepared and confident to do geometry now.
Math is really not my thing and I went into this class with a bad attitude- thinking the teacher couldn't care less. I ended up becoming interested in the math we were doing because he made it relevant. Uses a lot of humor in the class and also keeps tabs on how you are doing grade wise. So I recommend him and look forward to my next class with him
saved my semester
Expresses his expectations clearlty. If you get a horrible grade in his class, you have only yourself to blame. A very intelligent and caring teacher.
really enjoyed his class last semester
I absolutely loved this class. he has a way of taking the most difficult ideas and explaining it in a way anyone can understand. Weeven ended up doing math for the sphere that needed calculus without using calculus. I'm a big fan of Archimedes thanks to him!
Very helpful and not full of himself like a lot of professors at UM. Very truthful about what will be covered on tests and the time needed to do well. He is willing to give extra help, so if you are having trouble, as you have to do is ask and he really does help.
Great professor. Very straightfoward and a great sense of humor if you are smart enough and can catch it. I took him for M132 as well.
This professor is very respectful and mindfull of students with special needs. He makes students feel welcome and helps them succeed. I am very thankful I got him for this class.
Heavy on lectures but they are injected with humor and some amazing examples he seems to pull out from his head. He's also extremely helpful and kind to students and sympathetic with students that are struggling. You won't forget him or his class!
Fair, supportive and encourages questions. Emphasized higher order thinking from Blooms Taxonomy instead of just recall type thinking.
It was very obvious from the first day of class that this professor was woefully unprepared to teach this course (he could not navigate the website on which we had to purchase software required for the course). He grades assignments based on how well you regurgitate information verbatim and not on whether you can understand/apply the concepts.
The professor did a wonderful job for those of us who were there to learn the material. The software was provided for free for those who had a PC. He obviously knew how to use the software because he wrote a lot of very cool sketches for the class "on the spot". I had this professor for M132 as well and would recommend him for anyone who fears math
I took 6 credits of elementary math with him. His examples are relevant, and if something isn't understood he explains and explains until you get it. He mostly gives take home exams that are really time consuming but forces you to learn the material. He can also be hilarious and entertaining at times.
He is one of the worst Professors I have ever had. He is ridiculously smart but I learned nothing in his class. He is rude the vast majority of the class and makes students cry. I would never take this class again with him teaching it. You have to go to class because even if you do it right, if it isn't the way he taught it you will fail.
I really liked the course and enjoyed attending it. The professor went to great lengths to make sure we learned the content and to make sure we were prepared for the Final. I left the class with a better appreciation for arithmetic operations and its relevance in K-8. This prof honestly cares whether students succeed in class.
He's very quick, brilliant and witty when he lectures and is hard to keep up with. But then he slows down and a lot of time was spent on class activities on Friday which helped me because I attended all of them. I got a lot out of the class especially fraction concepts and feel confident with them for the first time.
This prof was awesome. I'm making sure I have him for M133.
The math content was not easy for me but it helped to be with a teacher that is not a harsh grader. The exams made me relearn the material, and there were readings that also helped understand why the math was relevant. I recommend him very highly.
It's obvious he's one of the smartest professors you can get and the class moves quickly because he doesn't waste time on basic stuff. I personally got a lot out of the course the second time over and finally got quadratic reciprocity. Pofr. Sriraman makes things easy to understand and I recommend him highly especially for number theory.
I took history of math from him to satisfy upper division writing for my degree and ended up really enjoying and learning the material. The professor presumes we remembered Calculus and ripped through a lot of computations with series very quickly. But this did not detract from the course material. I enjoyed his humor a lot!
I found inspiration in the multiple dynamic representations of the propositions in The Elements.
This was an awesome course in Geometry with an awesome professor. He has a lot of humor!
I was really enjoying this course before it became online due to covid19. The professor provides a great in class experience that online learning cannot! It was a pity but I'm hoping to take him in the Fall when classes start hopefully!
Awesome professor- brought some great learning examples and tailored the material to make it relevant. Even the tests were fun to do!
Great class!!! cut short by the coronavirys.
The professor helped a lot of us out when we switched to online learning by providing a lot of resources the library could not. He really cares you investigate the correct material for your research. Most helpful professor I have ever had.
I enjoyed his lectures ! The research paper was more work than I expected but help was available from the professor for sources. I highly recommend him for hist of math.
Dr. Sriraman was awesome and really flexible with the changing needs in a face-to-face class during Covid19. The lectures were really good and the course was set up on Moodle so no one would fall behind.
I could not complete the course but hope to have him as an instructor. The lectures are great and he takes care to explain the math in an understandable way. The Non-European history which is about half of the material he lectured on was eye opening to me.
Really awesome teacher and kind person.
Professor Sriraman's lectures are fun to attend and injected with humor. He knows how to take really difficult material and makes it easy to understand.
I loved this class even though I had geometry in high school and knew most of the material. What I loved was the way Professor Sriraman brought in some really amazing examples and problems in the measurement chapter and made the things we were learning both relevant and applicable to the classroom. He boiled down material to what was relevant.
We dove right in without much time spent on preliminary material. Dr. Sriraman is awesome but has high expectations of students and finds a way to make you do your best. The homework seemed heavy at times but relevant. He also finds clever ways to loop back into the same material again to reinforce content we were learning.
The course gave both a Non-Eurocentric and a Eurocentric view of the development of mathematics. We had to engage with the textbooks and the mathematics both from a historian's viewpoint and that of a historiographers. It was challenging but the Professor explained things very meticulously.
This was the first stress free math class I have experienced. I was afraid of the math requirement for my program and thank God I got Prof. Sriraman. I learned every concept taught and also started to like math for the first time in my life. His lectures are really good.
I enjoyed listening to his lectures - especially his sense of humor. He also cares you do well in the course by following up with you. I wish I had him for some of the other courses.
If you want to get inspired and learn more math than you expected to learn this professor is the one for you. I can't put down the Book of Numbers after taking his course and am learning all kinds of connections I never knew about families of numbers. The lectures are brilliant and leave you hanging for more...
That class was a great way to wake up in the morning. He's so funny. He sort of babbles on about random things, but it was to show us the importance of story telling as a teacher. He made us look at math from the perspective our future students will when they're learning new things. He will give you the textbooks, so you don't need to buy them.
I really enjoyed his lectures and his sense of humor- he knows A LOT about A LOT of things. He made us struggle with arithmetic in other bases to know what it means to walk in the shoes of children who are learning base 10 for the first time. I am taking him for 133 in the Spring.
If you are someone that struggles in math like me you want him as your teacher. I am thankful there are kind professors like him at UM.
I took his course many years ago - a few days ago I ended up using an algo he taught me in the number theory class which converges efficiently. His course I thought was computation heavy but now I know why!
Professor Sriraman is a really good teacher who takes the time to explain things really clearly to those who struggle with geometry. I liked how he would take student responses to homework problems and pursue them to whatever end it led to- and in the process show how making mistakes can help us learn.
I've never had a professor with his humorous lecturing style. He uses the board a lot and performs long computations without omitting steps. The material was all new to me and I really enjoyed learning from him- I recommend him highly. If nothing else you might end up learning a few hundred new words you never knew existed.
I had many health issues during this semester, and he was very kind and flexible about it. The textbook is free, and all tests are take home. While homework isn't mandatory, I would recommend at least glancing at it and showing up during homework discussions anyway. You will pass if you pay attention and use his specific formats.
