Very hard to understand but is such a sweetheart. You can tell she cares and can meet with her whenever youd like. It is just frustrating during class when its difficult to write down notes with a language barrier. Text book is marked as required but literally is NEVER used. All online for homework. Overall a fun class if you pay CLOSE attention
Hardly speaks English, difficult to understand but you will get use to her. Her class was easy, little homework 15 questions a night online. Plus you have as many chances to get the answer correct online so always a 100% on homework. She is helpful and kind, always willing to stay after to answer questions! DONT buy the book never opened it once.
SUPER nice. She's also really funny. Strong accent, but you do get used to it. I would strongly recommend her for Calc 3 if she teaches it again, because the alternatives aren't pretty. She learns your name by the second day, gives out group "pop quizzes" that she gives you 100% on even if you're wrong, and encourages going to her office hours.
Stiber has been my favorite professor at UWB. The way she taught math encouraged me to pursue a math major. That is after having barchechat for calc 2 lol... She DOES NOT CURVE but instead gives students much more participation points and much more partial credit on exams. She is really funny however some students got beef with her english. 3.9-4.0
Very nice lady, but could not understand half the things taught in class. Used slideshows and handouts to teach the class, which was the only useful material to learn from. Didn't have to use the book once. She probably gets her teaching style from her husband. Would recommend Alexandre Barchechat over her and Abian.
Stiber is a nice lady, but the way that she handles her class is unorganized. She gives you copies of lectures but she doesn't include some things that you actually need to write down. If you decide to take her, write your own notes instead, do all your homework, and study for your exams.
VERY nice teacher. If you missed homework for any reason, talk to her and she will compromise with you. She genuienly cares about you and going to class is always stress-free. Attendance is vital to grade. Allows 1 page of notes (front+back) for tests, which is WAY more than enough. A++ Would take again
Bilin Stiber is a wonderful Math instructor. Organized and very helpful. Will take again.
May have some issues with English but is genuinely interested in the success of her students. The online homework provides enough opportunity to get every problem correct and homework is a large part of final grade, so it really helps. Overall, awesome teacher!
Speaks very fast with a very heavy accent. Powerpoint slides are also incredibly text heavy and she will not post them online. HW is fairly easy, but exams are incredibly difficult, often taking concepts and placing them in a word problem type scenario. Her HW and review does NOT cover this. 3/4 of our class couldn't finish exam 2 in 2 hrs.
She is a nice lady, but has a strong accent and speaks really fast. It is difficult to understand her. Attendance is compulsory and fetches participation points. If you take her class, be ready to work and learn Math on your own.
Hard to understand and speaks way to fast. Would not put pp online. Her learning style is not good for those who need clarity in math.
She is very helpful and always tries to answer questions when asked. It's hard to understand sometimes when she lectures due to her accent but she hands out copies of the lectures anyways. All the homework is online so there's no need for a textbook. Attendance is somewhat mandatory because she randomly assigns pop quizzes which can't be made up.
Overall, a great math teacher. She made the class fun and entertaining, and is always willing to help her students. She cares about your grade, and it is easy to ask for help via office hours or email. Does have a thick accent which can be hard to understand at times.
This class is challenging but managable. If you show up to class and do the homework you should be fine for the midterm and final. And she's always there to help you if your having trouble. She does have a very thick accent so you must pay close attention! I'd recommend her class
She is a great professor. I had her two quarters in a row. She is very helpful and as long as you put effort in she will do what she can to get you a good grade. So far one of my best math professors.
get 30-60 questions per week with Pearson. Very tedious homework. Pop quiz every morning. Tests worth 70% of grade and homework+quiz+attendance is 30%. She likes to use easier examples in lectures and hard ones in the classwork. I prefer the opposite. She also will always try to help after class and emails. lectures are fast but take up 2 hour
Wish I could take off my previous rating :(. I thought I would get a D but instead she gave me a 2.1... this class is hard and you also might get confused what an equation does. Attendance is required and you can't be over 10 minutes late since she gives a pop quiz everyday. 70% of grade goes into the 3 exams. 10-20 questions on Pearsonlab.
As long as you put forth the effort, even if you struggle, as long as you talk to her, whether it be outside class or through emails, she will do her best to get you through the class with a positive attitude. Great professor for me.
She is a great math teacher. Her accent is least of your worries if you're basics aren't strong enough. I would recommend taking her class if you're algebra skills are Fairly good to amazing. She gives pop quizzes everyday but you get to work with other people. Don't be late to her class. Don't buy a hard copy of the book everything is online.
Bilin Stiber is a cool math professor that challenges you to think critically. While I wasn't the best in her class, her support was outstanding. She is very strict, but a good strict. She expects you to work for the grade! SO work for it. Make it. Bless up. When you get a bad grade, don't panic. It's a roadblock, overcome it.
There's no denying that she's good teacher with tremendous knowledge, but her strong accent makes it pretty hard to understand what's going on, especially in this calculus class.
Her exams were really tough. They took the concepts you learned in class farther than expected. On the up side, the final exam seemed easy in comparison to her midterms.
Has an accent, but a great teacher regardless.
Has an accent, but otherwise a great teacher!
She is very knowledgable but seems to not understand that most of the students are learning this for the first time. She rushes through the material and skips steps when showing examples. Unless you have taken Calculus 2 before, I would not recommend her. She also has a thick accent which did not help because she would also talks extremely fast.
Stiber is a caring professor and if you put in the advised amount of time into the typical 5 credit technical classes, you should expect a good grade in return. Her pop quizzes are prior to the beginning of each lecture, so you must study the previous chapter section before each class. Still, you are able to talk to others during the quiz. Curves!
She speeds through the lessons really fast and her having a pretty thick accent doesn't help with keeping up with her. If you are new to calculus, you will probably struggle unless you actually spend several hours of studying outside of class. However, she does put in a lot of effort to help save your grade and she curves final grades.
She doesn't want her students to fail and therefore makes sure that there is plenty of opportunity for hw help. I loved being in her class for calc 1 and am taking her class again for calc 2. My only real complaint about her is that she has a thick accent which is sometimes an obstacle but if you activley pay attention the class is relatively easy.
She goes over material very fast and skip steps while showing practice problems. I feel like she thinks we know a lot more than what we actually do, this made it hard to keep up. I felt behind a lot during class. Also there is a lot of homework involved with this class that is time consuming and can be difficult.
If you are taking her, you will have to attend the class every day because there will be a quiz at the beginning of the class. She is pretty nice, and always willing to see students ask her questions at her office hour. But you do have to work really hard in order to get a 4.0
She is a really good prof, but her accent is quite heavy (it take time to get used it). U defenitely need to go to her office hour, she is always care about her student and really willing to solve ur question.
Dr. Stiber is a very good instructor her accent is a little heavy so sitting towards the front where its easier to hear will help. She covers each subject well and provides many examples, she goes fast but has good office hours and answers questions well. I wish I could have taken her for the whole math sequence. Good instructor challenging class.
Great teacher when it comes to explaining topics. Throughout the course, she emphasizes what problems will show up in the Chapter Exam along with the Final at the end of the quarter. I really recommend going in during her office hours to clarify any issues if you have any. Do the homework and show up to class and you will be just fine!
She goes very fast in class and when asking questions her answers always seemed condescending like we should already know all the skills. She made questions into arguments with the student. I had calc 2 with her and I regret my choice. Go for a teacher that uses class time to explain the reason behind concepts not just how to plug and chug.
Goes way too fast in class. Skips steps. "Any question? *1.5 sec pause* Ok we move on." Questions asked get condescension. Homework help sections don't match problems. Defers HW questions to QLC or other students. Tests significantly harder than assignments. Lectures are useless. Teaching myself. I only show up for quiz points Genius, but useless.
I wouldnt take Stiber again. Save yourself the trouble of purchasing the textbook, we havent looked at it. She has a habit of skipping steps when learning new content. When you ask questions, she is passive aggressive and shifts the blame on poor algebra skills. She assigns tons of homework- which takes 3-5 hours if youre teaching yourself.
Almost all of the positive ratings on here are from A students. In her class, an A student didn't need a teacher there to begin with. A students in Stiber's class already grasp the subject. Stiber does -not teach-. She skips over steps then tests you on those steps. She treats the whole subject like we should already know it.
Her style doesn't encourage an intuitive understanding, and instead says "here's the formula, now use it". Lecture slides are copy/paste, given at start of class. Glosses over proofs that are purely mathematical, and not derived organically. Breezes through class, and ends 10-15 minutes early. She does care, but needs to work on her style.
DOES NOT TEACH! She skims topics and expects students to understand all the content right after going over one example problem. Taking Stiber's class is not good for students who are taking Calculus for the first time. It's obvious she cares about her students, but she needs to change the way she teaches because it's not effective.
Dr. Stiber is a great professor. She goes through lectures pretty fast, mostly practicing solving problems. Her accent is a bit heavy, so sit in the front would be helpful. Pop quiz almost everyday, but most of the time if you show up for class, you'll get full points. Not recommended if you don't have strong algebra skills.
Skips way too many steps, assumes you know it, not helpful and makes students feel dumb by pointing out individual mistakes out loud to rest of class. Teaches to fast and does not give out much individual help. 10/10 would not recommend. How is she a teacher!?!?
Isn't very good at teaching, she really briefly talks about the topic and expects everyone to understand. On an exam most of the class didn't do so well and she just up and said that the deadline to drop the class was soon and if you aren't gonna try, basically just drop the class and don't waste your time. Overall I won't ever take her class again
She's very good at explaining, as well as helpful outside of class. Plus, she's friendly. She assigns a lot of work (especially for STMATH 124), but with dropping a few of your low grades coupled with opportunities for extra credit (BMATH 121 has more), she's trying to help you pass. I got an A in 121 and a B+ in 124.
The worst math teacher I've ever had and as a Math major, I've had plenty. Her lectures are incredibly hard to follow because she goes extremely fast and makes you feel like an idiot if you can't keep up, then ends 10min early. Tests are RIDICULOUS compared to anything done in class, feels like she is trying to trick you with the questions on them.
She's a solid professor with great lectures, but 1 on 1 conversations with her can be rough. She clearly knows what she's talking about, but she sometimes does not understand where her students are struggling. Only take her is you are confident in your math abilities, as her tests throw everything they've got at you.
She gives out a worksheet every class with all the theorems and definitions, then explains the material (including proofs and example problems! Very useful!) on the whiteboard. Calc 3 is a very difficult class, but as long as you pay attention in class, ask questions when you don't get it, and do the HW, you will be ok. Teaching style is great.
Worst teacher I've ever had. Took during coronavirus. Completely not understanding, doesn't care about students. Thinks online is the same as in person. Offers NO partial credit so if you forget a minus sign enjoy losing 20% of the grade for that exam. Just overall not a nice person. I'd rather take this class 19 times over with a better professor.
Online because of the pandemic, everything is online which was not an issue with my other courses. But exams are on canvas and number/letter entry only, so no partial credit given AT ALL. she makes it very clear she does not want to see your steps, answers only. so a tiny mistake can cost you 10% of your grade, awful professor
Most of the reviews here are a little too harsh. Yes, calculus with her is challenging, but I think the difficulty is just inherent in calculus. She explains problems very well especially when you tell her you're confused. She's overall a really nice person and she even gave an extra credit opportunity to students after one tough exam.
Did not understand anything from her lectures when it was in person, bc of accent but she is caring outside of class but she is heavily grading depends on tests which all you need to study for it,
Your algebra and trigonometry should be really strong. Pop quizzes are a given 100%. The worksheet only shows the basics. HW can be hard and long. Exams are 70% of your grade. She only wants your answer, not your steps. So a few silly mistakes on an exam can cost your grade a lot. Always read the problems carefully and double check your answers.
Professor Stiber has been sweet, caring, and understanding during a terrible time for both students and professors. Tests are on MyLab due to the class going online so its a bit harder to get credit. But she has given extra credit after every exam that is easier than the actual exam. She knows the material very well and will spend time explaining.
I don't suggest her class if you're not really confident in algebra and trigonometry. She's nice, fast-paced, and has an accent. Worksheets show the basics. HW can be time-consuming and hard. Little-to-no partial credit given on exams because she wants answers, not steps. Offers extra credit after a tough exam. The final's easier than the midterms.
In my previous post, I accidentally typed STMATH142 when it's actually STMATH124. Sorry about that. To add to my previous post, I highly suggest that you go to her office hours and go to the QSC if you're stuck on something. Online because of the pandemic. Her online exams are open-notes. In a normal quarter, in-person exams are probs closed-notes.
One of the worst profs I've had. Three exams in this course so if you mess one up your grade is done. She gave us the study guide and a student asked her if the exam will be similar to the study guide, she said "it might be". Took the exam and it was nothing like the study guide and killed my grade. Don't take her class
I had to change this course into an S/NS grade because I am teaching myself Calc 2. She is caring enough but she isn't very good at teaching her subject. She teaches like a textbook was put in text-to-speech. Scheduled a test on Halloween. She expects memorization of math, not actual learning of the concepts. Works through problems at light speed.
Stiber's only down side is her accent. 2 midterms 1 final. If you plan on learning in class it will be hard. I learned through youtube and only went to class for the exams and did fine. She's a lieneant grader. She gave test corrections for midterm 2 and curved the final. Final is easier then midterms. Hardest topic of the class was chapter 6.
This was by far the hardest class I've taken she gives absolutely no review for her exams. The homework and tests look nothing alike. The class average for her exams was around 30% again you will have no idea what the problems look like. You better know the concepts and be able to relate them back perfectly or good luck
Its going to take half the term just to get used to her accent. There are pop quizzes every morning, they are all 1 point each. Here is a quick tip: if she continues doing what she did to our class, you can count on her dropping 2 lowest hw grads and 1 lowest quiz grade
Good professor, capable of giving clear explanations and also makes sure that students understand material, and if you don't then there are many opportunities to get extra help. Though, the best thing you can do for yourself in this class is to review the lesson the day ahead and even do the homework if you can.
AVOID IF POSSIBLE. She's a dictator - no clear explanations of grading, doesn't like to be asked for other solutions to a problem. She said if you had covid during finals, no make-ups given. Basically, you should shut up and spread the virus. She lies about the curves, nothing happen. Shows no care when needed. Take other profs or adjust your plans
Dr. Stiber was a great professor and was always open to answering questions. Lectures are fast-paced but it is calc 2. She has an accent but it was easy to get used to and she'll only give corrections or make up work for exams if the class average is low which did not happen this quarter. She cares about concepts over memorization. Great overall!
Professor Stiber was a really caring professor and it's easy to understand why certain people may think negatively about her. She does have a thick accent which get's a while to get used to but she really does try her best for you to understand. Calc 2 is hard so lectures take the whole class time but is always willing to help in between or after.
Worst professor ever! Teaches too fast, strong accent makes her hard to comprehend. Mandatory attendance counts for 5-10% of grade. CP/CW problems are much easier than test questions (don't help in ANY way). If you take any of her classes (done 2) get ready to learn outside of class. Avoid if you can, college is strictly based on your professor.
Allot lots of time for homework, and teaching yourself the materials from class. It is necessary to do well because she teaches quickly and not very thoroughly.
Professor Stiber is supportive, kind, and approachable. Please don't hesitate to ask if you need help. She is considerate of students, especially because this course is hard. The course is homework-heavy, but this is Calculus. Please expect it to be hard. Try to do well on the midterms.
I would not recommend this teacher at all. A terrible grader. The mid-term comes out of pocket. You cannot miss an assignment even when you let her know.
This teacher's class was a total disappointment. Their teaching lacked enthusiasm and clarity. Communication was poor, assignments were confusing, and they seemed disinterested in helping students succeed. I wouldn't recommend them.
lot of homework and cannot miss a lecture even when sick
So sweet and honest, which is weirdly very helpful for math, at least for me.
Pretty light class, just attend and do the homework.
this is the worst teacher you can possibly pick. There are no lectures/clear introductions to topics, so you will eseentially just enter the class, be shown a formula and are expected to instantly understand it whilst she finishes problems at a comedic speed... The cherry on top is that the exams are the hardest piece of material in the class. 😭
Don't take this professor, she moves through problems at a comically fast speed and the lectures are so bad you are basically teaching yourself calculus. its at a point where it she is actively hindering our success as opposed to help us be successful. Car accidents are not emergencies btw so dont crash or u get a 0 on the final. goodluck
Ms. Stiber is a super sweet lady, but my God she has to be the worst math teacher on earth. Her accent is impossible to understand, she goes through problems faster than God himself could understand, and the textbook is just extra problems! No instructions!!! this is honestly the worst math class I've ever taken. Bellevue college was better.
Going to class and doing hw can't be enough for class. You gotta deeply master the material since the test are hard and practice exams are no where near the actual exam. Reviewing material before class will be best since she makes problems seem very complicated at times. Ended up dropping the class. Heavy accent as well takes a sometime to get use.
Exams are very hard and there's a good amount of homework
VERY test heavy. 2 tests before the final. If you do bad, drop out and retake it because you won't pass.
didnt seem interested in helping students succeed SUPER test heavy -- teaching style is very lecture based which is hard because professor skips steps and has a heavy accent. take other professors
I genuinely think that if you miss 3+ classes with her you should just drop the class.
She's sweet and obviously cares about students, but also one of the worst teachers I've had. Most of the lecture is her speeding through the material, while providing little explanation for many concepts. 65% of the grade is on 3 exams (2 midterms + final), so just doing the HW and other graded stuff will NOT cut it.
Absolutely awful with a syllabus that doesnt leave any room whatsoever for one single missed assignment nor does the final replace one of the two midterms as other classes usually do. Truly a lesser desirable instructor.
She obviously cares and is passionate but she is genuinely so hard to get taught from her. From heavy accent, to skipping steps in ex., to just going way to fast, she is not a good teacher from someone who is average. Ur cooked if you don't understand even only one concept, the test will lobotomize you. Be ready to hear formulerr and zoom zoom 100x
Horrible class structure, 65% of the class is made up of 2 exams and the final so if you do bad on one exam your grade is completely shot. Speeds through lectures and doesn't do a good job explaining key points and concepts, yet urges the class to master the material so we do good on exams. You're basically teaching yourself calc thewholetime lol
Professor is caring and was merciful towards students who mess up, but there isn't much to learn in class. If you're okay with teaching yourself, this is fine.
Math isn't my strong suit, but with practice I improved on every test. There's a short online quiz at the start of class, and she gives the answers, so you get full points if you're on time. Definitely come on review days the worksheets are very similar to exams, even the final. She's super nice and helpful one-on-one.
