Easy going. Nice guy.
Class is really easy, he is very much "by the book", fair teacher. Class is rather repetitive and boring though.
This guy is weird, boring, and waits forever for answers no one has. Did not enjoy, he was way harder than plain COM 101 teachers and his tests had tricky questions. He is all about the book and had most of it memorized. Do the extra credit though!!
His speech grading criteria is useless. But a very nice guy.
Nice guy, class is pretty entertaining. Speeches are graded mainly on structure, not so much on overall quality, which was the only thing I didn't like.
Stern grader. Mostly fair. Very nice guy
Hard class! Lots of writing. However he is a cool teacher, and very cool about late work. Be sure to cite sources correctly or he will pounce on ya.
EASY. No one should ever complain about Belk, he is the nicest guy and one of the easiest graders ever.
He wastes lots of time by waiting for answers, and when someone does, he strikes them down on a subjective question. He spends too much time on historical background of speech, 75% is unnecessary. His preparation skills are sorely lacking. He never came to class with the videos already rewinded.
He is a very nice, fair, and understanding professor. He's the only professor who teaches HON 190, but don't worry- that's a good thing.
He is a very well educated man and it is conveyed in his teaching style. Your hard work will be honored and his willingness to help you is awesome. He is quick in his responses and very helpful. I agree, he is a nice guy. You work hard and he will run with you.
boring uneventful class, way too long horrible teacher would never take him again
horrible nasty teacher. Avoid him at all costs. He is by far the worst teacher I have ever had in 3 years at UNLV
I'd take any class he teaches! Had no interest in taking the class but felt like I got a lot out of it. Prof. Belk is SO helpful and answered all my questions and then some. Awesome teacher.
Best Professor I've ever had.
Decent teacher, could be better, could be worse. No real defining characteristics, but a little unreasonable with his grading. (I was the state champ in High School Speech, and I got an A-)
The man is a genius. Very interesting class, somewhat difficult. Fair grader, very helpful. He responded to my e-mails within minutes. Recommended.
Fair grader. He has a lot of time on his hands, so sometimes he nitpicks on the small details. However, pay attention to your outlines. Make them well written essays in outline form. That is 90% of what he goes on to grade. As long as you don't stutter to obviously during your delivery you're fine. I suspect he doesn't actually listen.
Take this class in the SUMMER, it is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH EASIER. 5 weeks, one speech a week. It's nothing at all and goes by really quick
great teacher. need to put forth effort but it pays off. fun class
A lot of work, but well worth it. He is a GREAT guy and so helpful! Never hesitate to ask him anything. Outlines are important, the readings really aren't. You learn a lot more than you think you're learning. Take this class!
Good professor, you learn a lot. Seems to really know his stuff. The class does require a good amount of effort though, one of thoses classes to take in the summer simply because it is easier and a lighter load.
You will despise this class while you are taking it, but you will look back later and miss it. In many ways, far more practical and creative than similar classes like Composition 2. It's a lot of work, but trying is half the battle--don't give up, keep the communication lines open, and you'll be fine. He knows the value of honest effort.
Professor Belk is a pretty good guy. I respect him not only as an educator, but also as a veteran. Alas, he focuses a bit too much on theory as opposed to direct application. Also, I used to be a champion speaker and I was getting mostly "B's" (among the top of the class), so that should be an indication that he is a harsh grader and can show little mercy at times; that is his main problem.
I despise public speaking, but this class was fun and easy. His grades are based upon your improvement, so if you aren't an exceptional speaker you don't have to worry too much. I got A's. This class requires a major time commitment, but Belk is a pretty understanding guy. Get all the easy points from the critiques and the exam; they help.
If you're not a good speaker don't pick on yourself for a bad grade. I got my worst grade ever on this class, but I learned a lot too. He's easy going, makes a valiant effort at being funny, and wants to help students improve. He's proud of students who overcome their fears. He grades hard, but if you actually talk to him he's ok with late work.
This class helped me immensely. He is a great teacher and actually cares. Everyon improved after attending this class.
Prof. Belk is one of the best professors I've had. He genuinely cares about his students and he understands the hard work that you put in...that is, if you put in the hard work. Some of his classes do require a lot of work, but I think it's worth it. A must take if you can.
Although a bit boring and unclear, Belk is a nice guy until you meet his monster tests. The class average for the midterm was a D! Fortunately, speeches will boost your grade significantly if you're not big on studying.
midterm/final extrememly hard. straight from book/powerpoints. sooo much info in the tests/quizzes. the speech part was good, they will help your grade. didnt agree with his beliefs on things but he knows what he is talking about, seems like he cares. but tests and quizzes are veryyy hard. midterm average was a 58%...yeah
He was OK. The speech part was OK. My lab instructor was kind of harsh. The Midterm and Final were easy to me. Just need to understand the main concepts.
I dont know how people thiought his tests were hard.I thought they were easy. Just follow the rubric and format on your speeches. Its all about the speeches most of your grade.
LECTURES WERE SO BORING. Attendance is pretty much mandatory because after three absences they start dropping you percentages. The lectures really had nothing to do with what was on the test. The midterm/final were very difficult and all the material came from the book. The speeches are what make up most of your grade. OVERALL VERY HARD CLASS
Overall I think he was a good teacher. He grades the speeches knowing that we are incoming freshmen who really don't have that much experience with speeches. You don't really need to read the textbook he assigns. He goes over it in class. Final is easy- you just critque someone elses speech. Speeches are pretty fun subjects. Overall nice teacher!
UHM I GUESS HE IS OKAY. U JUST HAVE TO GO TO LECTURES AND TAKE NOTES!!
The most boring class i have ever sat through. He seems nice but the calss size was so big i never talked to him one on one.I guess hes an ok teacher it is just hard to stay awake. He doesnt really even grade anything, the lab instructors listen to your speaches.
Easy class. All you have to do is read the book and you'll ace the midterm and final.
The class is required and i highly recommend this teacher, he is really nice, makes chessy jokes but at least he attempts to lighten a boring subject. His lectures are boring but straight forward and easy and the tests are word for word right off the slides. he's overall easy and nice and you don't HAVE to attend all his lectures.
He seems fine. The class is like 4 or 5 classes in one, so we all just sit & listen to him talk. Rarely does anyone ever get one-on-one time to talk with him. He does try to lighten up the class, I'm sure he knows what it's like to sit through a class like that.
feels like a military academy. do not take as a large lecture. he is more concerned with the rules and procedures than the substance of the class, but he passes all responsibility to his TAs.
This guy is a D-bag. He doesn't go over information that is on the test. Lectures are dull and irrelevant. No time in between speeches with the T.A's to actually study the content. Final is over 17 chapters in the book. Too bad he never goes over any of them. I wouldn't take him if my life depended on him.
Belk is kind of like Bill Nye the science guy accept not as cool. His lectures are boring, if it's a big lecture with split labs, DO NOT TAKE HIM. Although, I don't really know how he is one-on-one. Either way, take someone else.
He isn't as bad as others say, at least for COM 101. The lectures arent to exciting given the topic at hand, but he does try to add some humor. He often points out major things in his lectures that will be on the test. Full notes are online. If you read its easy. The back to back speechs, however, are really annoying.
What I find most frustrating about this class is that lectures are mandatory despite the fact that EVERYTHING he says in lectures is found in the book. There are about 5 online quizzes and 4 speeches you will give (which they grade fairly hard for a COM 101 class). The only plus side is that they provide a study guide for the midterm and final.
Belk really isn't horrible, but the lectures are useless because everything is in the book. The labs go more in-depth with the material and are also the classes you'll be giving your 4 speeches in. The quizzes are easy if you skim through the chapter. Most of the answers are in the summary. DO THE STUDY GUIDES FOR THE FINALS! You'll pass if you do.
Prof Belk is ok. Lectures are dull, do not help pass tests. study guides somewhat helpful. The hardest part is Grad students are the lab instructors. My opinion of the four I met during speech contest: condescending, patronizing,& lacking in interpersonal skills. Worthless, unless you speak with privately, $press for how to write/deliver good speec
He's very smart and his lectures are informative. If you just read the book like you're supposed to, you'll do well. I studied for my midterm and got an A+ on it. Just do the work and show up to lecture and you'll be fine.
He's horrible! I just took him this past semester. He's rude, barely teaches, and makes it mandatory for you to be there. He treats his students like they are still in high school, and he passes everything to his TA's to do. His TA's grade ridiculously hard for a 101 class.
This guy knows how to put you to sleep. His lectures are beyond boring and useless because the power points are online. Forces you to sign in for attendance but you can just show up at the end and sign in then. Quizzes are easy, straight from the book. For exams, just read the power points and required chapters in the book and you'll do fine.
Lectures are boring, however the class is really helpful. He isn't as bad as people say he is. The effort you give is reflected in your grade. Something that pissed me off is that his lecture notes are HUGE!!!.. he doesn't finish them. Still, he is a good professor.
Lectures are dull. The TA's do the work and they grade insanely hard for a 101 class. Attendance is ridiculous; you have to wait in a huge line just to sign your name. I would say take a different professor if I could, unfortunately for you he is the only person who teaches 101. Exams weren't really as hard as people say, they were just long.
As an established professor, Belk is extremely knowledgeable in his field. Though this is helpful, his lectures fail to sustain interest and are instead tediously dull. Belk does provide all the info required, but it is up to the student to study, retain, and recount this info. His exams were long but not too difficult. The GAs grade your speeches.
Downright annoying class. Bill expects only one internet source to be used per speech, a very useless/ineffective criteria. The rest of the grading criteria for the speeches are very strict and the exams are frustratingly detailed. Overall as it is Com 101 I expected much better, both as a lecturer and as a professor.
Belk is not that hard, it is mainly the TA grading/listening to speeches (most important). Tests are easy if you study-Seriously he even gives study guides. Don't necessarily need to come to class, but it is recommended (just for sh&giggles). Do all quizes don't miss deadline, Most important: complete& turn in outline on time!
Bad reviewers are bitter. This class is one of the most time consuming and challenging 100-level courses there is and if you aren't required to take it, then I suggest you don't. Quizzes straight from the book. Make you work hard on speeches, but it's for your own good. Lectures can be boring, but are bearable. Book use high when making speeches.
Took Belk over summer and class was rather easy. Quizzes straight from book. Mid term and final aren't bad, just have to put effort to study. BUT grades difficult on speeches. only downfall i would say. Good teach just tough speech grader..
He decided to take attendance for a class with over 100 people in it. Quite annoying when so many people have to stand in line to sign a piece of paper. Ugh. On top of that, the one internet resource only thing he's got going on is really aggravating. With everything becoming digital nowadays, he can't keep that up forever.
Great teacher, even better class. Lectures are fun and interesting. Some people might not like it however due to the fact that you will HAVE read the entire textbook to get a good grade. Simply put if you don't read or study the textbook YOU WILL FAIL! I can guarantee that, I read it got an A. I would recommend this class, just make sure you study
I took his Honors Public Speaking class seven years ago which not only prepared me for the speech contest, but also for the job market. Professor Belk remains one of my greatest mentors to date. He's an excellent professor and person who transcends academia to offer real world lessons. Take advantage of his classes!
Quizzes are straight forward, lectures are boring, Tests are an IQ test rather than a test about the material you've learned. You need to know vocab and decipher scenarios for 80% of the questions. I got a D on my first speech and followed the example on web campus exactly, So if I were you I'd take a different Professor.
Belk is very interesting in the lecture portion of the class. Tests come straight from the book (read, read, read). I had a bad experience from my lab instructor (Sara Kaplan): grouchy and mean, we were all scared on the first day of class. Overall, boring class. Do it and leave.
Time consuming and annoying class but not really difficult. You need to read the book in detail to get good grade on midterm and final which is all out of the book. Speeches are stressful to prepare and many guidelines which TAs grade by. Overall, okay class not terribly difficult.
COM 101 at UNLV consists of a Lecture and a Lab. On some days, you will be in the lecture hall with Professor Belk, and on other days you will be with a group of 25 of the 200 from the lecture hall for your lab with the GAs. Belk covers the boring book stuff, while the GAs are the ones who listen and grade the speeches themselves. READ THE BOOK.
Professor Belk is very helpful and knows his stuff. The midterms are difficult if you haven't kept up with the reading. The quizzes are open-note and very easy. Speeches are hard if you pick a bad topic or aren't comfortable with public speaking. Great class though!
Way too much work. You have to stay on top of too much stuff. I wish there were another option because this is at least 200 or 300 level work...Not survey course 100 level stuff. Avoid and go to the local community college
Great teacher! On some days you go to lecture where professor Belk covers material out of the book, and on the other days you go to lab where you present your speeches, and learn more about them. Overall there are six online quizzes, three speeches, a midterm, and a final. The quizzes and major tests are all out of the book.
Labs, in my experience, were much better than the lectures. Lectures are tedious, but I suppose helpful if one can force one's self to pay attention. The actual speeches aren't bad, and are made to be as least intimidating as possible. Overall an "okay" class. Not too scary, but the lectures are not great.
Firs off this professor hands most of the grading to the TA's which grade way to hard for a 101 class. He doesn't go over the correct material that is shown on the final. The final is 17 chapters and he doesn't cover one. He gives out a study guide but almost none of the study material was on the act test itself.
Extremely dry, but since lecture is mandatory for points, you must go. Try your best to pay attention, but if you can get a good TA, you should be able to get a descent grade in the class. Quiz questions come out of the book, so you have to get the textbook.
I think like most people I was dreading public speaking. Professor Belk's boring lectures didn't help much but my TA (Makhlouf) was great. Attendance is mandatory but labs were somewhat enjoyable and extremely helpful (on the days you weren't giving a speech). This class was a lot of work. Reading the book was more helpful than the lectures.
Boring lectures for the most part. The midterm is pretty easy though if you study the study guide he gives you. Overall, Belk is a good teacher to take fro this class. You're broken up into groups of 25 for your speeches when class starts.
This is a very very very... VERY. easy class. (well, besides the speeches LOL). The tests are ALL based off the textbook. Barely any of the lectures are included in them. To get a good grade on speeches: USE A LOT OF SOURCES and cite each source in your preparation outline. Do not say um/uh or you guys.
Super boring lectures, can't even hear what hes talking about cause of his voice and the mic. Midterm and exams based off textbook, so you gotta read. Speeches were hard. He basically reads off ppt and is not helpful. 1 midterm, 1 exam, 3 speeches each with a preparation outline, presentation outline, bibliography, and self-evaluation.
Everybody hates public speaking, so you're on the same boat as most of your classmates. You're broken into classes of 25 students to give your speeches, and it's really not that excruciating nor difficult. You need to read the textbook for the exams, but the old edition will suffice. The access code is unnecessary.
His class was definitely hard. Have to attend class (takes attendance in discussion and lecture), Read Book (all test have major book work included), And DO ALL THE WORK. I missed one speech and i basically failed. Good luck!
Mr. Belk is amazing. He is such a nice man, and a helpful professor. There are 3 speeches, a midterm, and a final. The 3 speeches I barely put effort into, and did the day of and got Bs on all of them. If you pay attention to the instructions given, go to his office hours, and do the extra credit youre golden. The exams were easy & take good notes!
Lectures were REALLY boring. He basically talked about what the book already said. 3 speeches, midterm & final. Midterm & final were pretty much situational questions. Definitely read the book. I definitely learned more from the smaller lab class. My TA (Sorenson) was very helpful. Overall, I thought this class was going to be much worse.
Very dry and boring, class is a lot of work. Attendance is mandatory and take your speeches and research very seriously! Midterm and final come straight from book. I had Schmidt for my T.A. and she was great!
Lectures are long and he never finishes the notes and the finals/midterms are hard . The class is helpful and easy if you do the work and he is really good with staying after and answering questions as well as emailing back. The videos he shows are pretty funny too .
Class is very easy and TA's are willing to put in a lot of effort to help you out. PAY attention in lectures. Class wasn't hard nor required a ton of time.
Attendance is required. Lectures can be pretty dry, but the course is not too bad. 3 speeches with a midterm and final; they were not extremely challenging.
Dry professor, boring lectures, but unfortunately they are pretty mandatory if you want to pass with decent grade. 3 speeches, a midterm, and a final. Have to do well on the speeches because midterm and final are very difficult. Don't procrastinate too badly and you'll get a passing grade.
Made the mistake of not paying attention to lectures, which I regret. He is a little boring and in addition the information is uninteresting. The midterm was a lot of information from lectures and the final is comprehensive. I spent late nights in the library studying for the final. The TAs are incredibly helpful, though, and really work with you!
Mr. Belk is kind hearted, intelligent, and always willing to go the extra mile for students who need help. He has some funny jokes and examples that keep the class interesting. Strongly recommended!
Mr. Belk is a kind hearted man who starts each lecture off by asking if there are any questions, and takes the time to answer all of them. His lectures can be dry but I don't blame him for that, the information is not always the most interesting. Study for your midterm and final and follow the given outline for the speeches and you're solid.
You don't really need the textbook but it's useful for studying for the midterm and final. Attendance is important. Lectures are kinda boring but Belk is a nice guy. The labs are way better than the lectures and my TA was Ms. Shaw. Follow the directions for each speech and you'll get a good grade.
Teacher: Belk for lectures, TA for labswhere you do speeches, both took attendance Class: 3 speechs 1 midterm and 1 final (testscommon sense + some terms)Do well (APA) the 3 speechesgrade *Check schedule know when & where your class is, don't procrastinate on speeches, & do extra credit (Best in-class Speech 2 can compete 2win no final 4 class
I have always had a fear of public speaking and honestly it ruined my grade. I was hoping since it was a 101 class they would be more understanding of students who were not comfortable speaking, but this was not the case. They grade the speeches as if it were an upper level class and lectures are very boring. Overall, I was very disappointed.
The professor is boring but his slides are posted online, so if you zone out just review at home. The tests are based on the book, so just review the terms and it's not hard, it's not just memorization though. He gives study guides which are pretty specific, USE THEM. Discussion takes more effort, but the TAs are very helpful. Do extra credit.
The class is a bit boring, but he teaches you what you need and is great at explaining. listen and you will be good for you're speeches. overall , pretty nice guy and always willing to help.
Although the class was absolutely boring, you can tell her is passionate about his subject. He is more than willing to answer questions, and always reminds students about his office hours. Attendance is mandatory and slides are posted online. Speeches are a piece of cake. Hopefully you get a good TA, to make the class bearable.
Belk passes everything off to his TAs, who all tend to get a little trigger-happy with the red pen. Speeches are hard for everyone to do, but if you tough it out, it isn't a hard class. Take advantage of every extra credit opportunity, especially the contest (finalists get 100% on the final), and you could rack up enough points to get the easy A.
Really hard class for a 101 level. Only one person received an A on our speeches, something is clearly wrong there. Lectures are very boring, lab instructors grade hard, test is hard if you do not study.
Worst class I have ever taken. Class is called communications but instead every COM 101 class is a hybrid online class. Half the time is in the classroom and the other half you are doing online work. I wanted an in class course but instead there is no choice and you can only have a hybrid. Avoid. GA's are not clear and long, boring online lectures
Attendance is mandatory and half the time you're in class, the other half you're in a discussion with his assistance. They give the most unnecessary work just to prepare you for the speeches and it's very time consuming.
Belk is great but teaches so many sections that you never see him (only TAs). I have been in the course for 9 weeks and haven't seen him in the classroom. Hybrid course so half the work is in classroom and other half is online. All TAs want to do is mark you off on every little thing. They grade everyone as though they are com majors. Just don't.
Not my favorite class. I had the hybrid class, and the online lectures were so terrible. I'm very sorry if you have to take this class for your major. Don't expect to get an A.
The hybrid COM 101 class is amongst the worst decisions made by UNLV. The structure of the hybrid class is too complex for many first year students. On top of this, the COM 101 class also has some very, very strict rules. A hybrid class combined with a strict class (public speaking no less) is what makes this class one of the worst UNLV decisions.
Very strict grading for a (hybrid) 101 course. You'll get marked off on every little thing for speeches and the exam material is pretty specific. Additionally, my TA wasn't good at teaching/explaining in general, so that made things even more unclear and difficult. End up with a good TA, put in work and you'll probably end up with a B or C.
This hybrid class (half online, half in-class) consists of a midterm, a final, three speeches, and a few other assignments. Be prepared for unnecessarily harsh grading and high standards for students who are first-timers in communications.
if you can, do not take his com101 class. extremly tough. 2 hard tests. Midterm and final, worth 15% each, 3 speeches, worth 10%, 15%, 25%, 2 self-evluation, 10% totally, 1 audience analysis, worth 10%, and the TA grading really mean. if you wanna pass, you will have a really hard time in h33is class.
Belk is a boring professor that just talks about the powerpoint during the entire lecture. More than half the semester was spent with TA in discussion. You have 3 speeches, 1 midterm, 1 final. 2 audience analysis. TA is a hard grader but willing to help. 3 Speeches took me at least 30 hours to write up out of classroom from beginning to end.
Took his class spring of 2015 and he was a decent Professor. If you are a communication major and passionate about it then i would suggest him. He has long lectures and tries to crack some jokes but they are usually dry. He is very knowledgeable about the material but when presenting, it gets lost in translation. Overall, he is an decent professor.
Not necessarily taught by Professor Belk, but rather numerous TA's. This class is easy enough if you learn to face your fears of public speaking while putting some time and effort into making your speeches good. This class is pretty straightforward. The midterm and final are solely based on the lectures that everyone has the transcript available.
He's not a very good lecturer. It might've been the auditorium we were in but it was so hard to hear him and he doesn't turn enough lights off so his powerpoints are washed out and hard to read. He goes through slides so fast you can't even take notes. Not a fan of the way he lectures though
Disappointing class. This 101 class had plenty of opportunity to make public speaking interesting, instead the way the class is designed is a bore. Speech topic selection is limited so you'll end up talking about something you don't care about which will limit your creativity. This lack of creativity will then reflect on your grade. Pick a good TA.
How to pass this class 1: Don't buy book. Go to library and photocopy necessary pages. Find friend who previously took class, bum off their study guide. Study guide is key to your A's on the 2 exams. Attend all classes. Maximum of 5 absences before point deduction @ 2%/additional absence. 3 speeches you must do well on.
Mr. Belk is passionate about what he teaches. Almost everyone at UNLV has to take this class as a requirement. This class is hard for a 101 class. Most people hate on this class because they approach it with the mindset that its another bs requirement for a major. Approach it positively and you will do fine.
It taught me how to be a good speaker, but it did not teach me how to not hate public speaking. I took the hybrid COM 101 class, and the lectures that he posts aren't bad. I went to him for office hours and he is very approachable. But honestly I hated this class and did not feel like I gained anything but regret.
It's hard to believe this is a 101 class. Lectures are unbearably boring. Grades were ridiculously harsh. Makes attendance mandatory. The things you have to learn are extremely specific. Unless you have a photographic memory you'll have a tough time. I have absolutely no idea why this course is required. Can't wait to get this class over with.
Class is taught by TA. I had Patrice B. as a TA she was pretty awesome. There are 3 speeches follow their outline exactly this is not the time for you to get creative and show that you can organize your speech differently they will fail you if you do that plus it's harder so why?
I took this class as a hybrid class taught by a GA. It is well organized and the lectures are online. Three speeches, one mid-term, one final. A ton of work, but if you pick topics you enjoy it will make the class infinitely better. Overall, a helpful class, but a ton of info to learn for the tests and a ton of work. Go to class, you'll be fine.
I appreciate his spunk but his lectures are unbelievably boring. He makes attendance mandatory though so if you want your grade to accurately reflect the work you put into the course, you've got to show up. Kind of annoying that you have to buy his $15 "coursepack" which you'll use exactly two pages of the entire semester.
Get ready to put in some crazy hours on those speeches, and study hard for the midterm/final.
I am taking this class because it is required for me as an undergrad. The speeches are not that bad, but the tests and quizzes are what stresses me out.I just want to get this class over with.
If you are not already comfortable with public speaking this will be a difficult class to take. Without any practice of speaking in front of the class, you are toughly graded the first time. If you are comfortable with public speaking this class should be fairly easy, it was for me. Just show up and actually do the speeches.
It is a shame that this class is mandatory for all majors as they literally throw you in here with no guidance on what to do other than to look at the "mandatory" course pack that you WILL actually use once or twice. The classes are overseen by TA's and for the most part, they have strict grading so getting even a C is a miracle.
It all depends on the TA. Mine was great, so I didnt hate class. This class was more how about well you write research papers instead of how well you speak in public. Yes, thats definitely a component, but its also the reason why people who stutter may get better grades than those who dont. Lectures are boring, quizzes are easy, exams are hard.
Your overall COM101 experience is very much dependent on the TA you get - Belk doesn't factor into your class experience nearly as much. That being said, I found him to be really smart and entertaining. Every single lecture, rubric, and due date is available to you from day one, so you can work ahead if need be. The class is structured perfectly.
Straightforward professor but really difficult class. You have to get the online textbook and a course packet that he himself put together. The course packet is quite useless and more of a money scam. Initially did not like the class but as long as you follow the outlines you will do well and might compete at the end of the year speech competition.
Taking a summer course is a challenge, but it was a pleasure taking COM 101 with Professor Belk. No TA was involved, he handled both lectures and speeches. He was very knowledgeable and made learning exciting. I'm grateful for the interest he shows in his students and his efforts to ensure their success in the course.
He is very stubborn and doesn't give informative feedback. He seems jaded from teaching for too long. I went with the reviews on here and i felt good about it but now I am regretting it and it's too late to drop the class.
I very much enjoyed taking this class! One of the last general credits I needed to take and I learned a lot. The classes had weekly assignments building up to create two speeches and in the end and I genuinely enjoyed learning all the public speaking skills Professor Belk had to offer. Highly recommend taking him!!
Easy class. Discussion posts, upload presentations, and quizzes. Accepts late work (lose 10% of grade per day late). Responds to Canvas messages and emails. Grade is locked for viewing all semester long.
Good class overall, but a lot depends on your TA. Lectures can be dry, but the structure is well-organized. Doing the readings and assignments is key. Also, Unstuck ai was super helpful for speech prep.
