Bill is a nice teacher and makes the subject enjoyable. The key to his class is participation. The people who don't involve their themselves in the conversations are the ones who are lost and don't enjoy the class. He's an overall great teacher!

Bill is a great teacher. His dry sense of humor is only matched by his extensive vocabulary-mine greatly improved.
Mr. Davis is an intelligent instructor. I think he gives his students that extra push, so they can succeed in his classroom. His class is challenging and informative. I enjoy taking his class, and I am learning alot too.
He's a very very very smart man, pushes toward perfection, and sees error wherever it lies. He loves helping you out anytime you can get him. He motivated me to work my butt off revising my research paper until he thought it was good enough to really be worth a solid A. Hard to get a lot of As from.
bill is a cool guy. he's very easy to talk to. He will be willing to help if you ask. make sure you read the book and do the homework it helps a lot. The only complaint is that he didnt really specify what he wanted from my essays. I believe he graded me unfairly.
Professor Bill Davis is an excellent teacher. I would recommand him to anybody who is taking an English class. I wish he was teaching my next English class. Very inforamative and helpful.

he's great
He is a horrible English teacher I ever had. If English is not your first laguage, I recommend you not to take his class because it does not matter how good you write, you won't get a good grade in his class, worst teacher....
Davis is an excellent professor; he's extremeley knowledgable and is a great lecturer. He's always willing to help out and grades fairly. If you're the slightest big unsure of what he's asking for on a paper, be sure to ask! Oh yeah, don't take if you're looking for an easy A--it won't happen with Davis. He knows half-ass work when he sees it.
Good guy smart and helpful. Always answered my questions clearly.
don't take his class if you're looking for someone to be specific and to explain what they're looking for in your papers. this guy tells you what to do, he doesn't show you how to do it. if you need a teacher who teaches you a skill "hands on", stay away from this one!
DO NOT TAKE HIM! if you are just taking this class for GE requirements look for someone else. His classes are really hard. most of your grade is on class participation so if your quiet, this not the class for you. If you dont do the hw, he will call you out in front of the entire class, and make sure you feel dumb. Dont ever miss a day of class!
You must love english if you are going to take him. There is about five different book required for this course and you get to read ALL of them. You should never miss a class if you plan on getting a good grade in this class. It is very hard to get an A. Must always do the hw and reading if not dont bother going to class. Class participation import
Good professor, cares about English. Learned a lot. Participation clearly helps, but is only 10% of grade. Good sense of humor.
I learned how to read and actually "get" poetry and lit for the first time ever. He really changed the way I read. The course (and grading) can be tough, and if you don't do the work, you're screwed. If you do, you'll learn alot.
Awesome teacher!
Learned more in this class than any other English class I've ever had. Ever.
really hard teacher. Most of your grade is based on the essays you write in class. He grades really hard, he does let you redo your essay for better grade but good luck actually getting a better grade. He totally plays favorites, if you are not one of them then you must work harder for a decent grade. I don't recommend him if you want an easy class
No offense, but you sort of have to be an idiot not to do reasonably well. Good teacher.
Really enjoyed his class... I feel like this is one of the few professors at WV/ in the English department that is thoroughly knowledgeable about his subject. Yes, that means the class may be a little harder, but it's for your own good! This guy knows what he's talking about!!!
good teaching!
Mr. Davis is one of the best English teacher's I've ever had. He really MAKES the effort to help students individually. The course load is not unreasonable. For papers, make sure to choose topics that are very specific and also make sure to do all of the assigned readings because he will quiz you on them if its obvious you haven't done them
By far one of the best instructors at West Valley. He is knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Always available to answer questions. Not the easiest course, but if you take the time to discuss your essays with him and improve your writing, you can do well.
I was dreading taking an English class, but class with Professor Davis was actually really enjoyable. He is very straightforward about what he wants and gives you plenty of time to get it done. It's not the easiest class but as long as you do the readings and put an effort into your essays you should do well. I would definitely take his class again
Would not recommend at all. He made a personal attack on my character, so that was the last time I attended his class.
Awesome!
I think you always work harder for good teachers. I worked really hard in this class, got an A, and I feel better able to write a good analytical paper.
great teacher its easy to pass if you show an interest in class and you take time to revise your essays with him. hes very helpful and strait forward
He is smart, witty, and very knowledgeable. His class was enjoyable, not a chore, and helped form a good foundation in critical thinking/essay formation. He answers questions, very responsive to email, and wants you to succeed. He has little time for BS, straight forward, tells it like it is, a bit sarcastic at times. All good though! I enjoyed it.
For those that don't do so swell in english: If you treat this class like you treated English in highschool (**** about it and just want to get an assignment over with) then youre going to get a C. if you keep up with the deadlines and do your work you'll get a B and if you go to the writing center every day for help on your essay youll get an A-.
The main thing you have to remember if you take his class:If you are late, he will rip you a new one... If you are even five minutes late, prepare to get extremely chewed out... dont even come if you're late... seriously...
Mr. Davis is definitely a great english professor. I took his english 905 class in the fall of 2012. He really takes the time to make sure everyone understands what is going on. At first he may seem like an a**hole, but he even says at the beginning of the semester that his comments/feedback on papers are not to make us feel stupid, but to help.
Davis is very tough on his students. He definitely expects a lot. He is sometimes unclear about expectations during class time but always leave comments on papers to let you know where you can improve. Overall good, but not great. I would not recommend him.
I won't lie, this professor is extremely intelligent and knows his material, but he is hard and quite mean. I do not suggest this class unless you are an avid writer and an A+ student and even if you are you will most likely receive a B. Not worth your time, this class should be an elective not a GE.
NOT AN EASY A! However, Bill is HILARIOUS! He is a very mean funny person, dry sense of humor, so if you're easily offended, stay away from him. I loved going to class, it was never boring and I had a great laugh every time. Hard grader, but very clear and helpful feedback. I would def take his class again.
Funny, smart, good teacher. Learned a lot.
Bill is, in my opinion, the smartest teacher on campus, and one that loves his subject and wants to share that love. He cares so much he can be a hard grader, but gives you chances to revise and get a better grade. He completely revolutionized an English class for me, and I love him! Also he looks like Mur from Impractical Jokers. Which is great.
Prof. Davis' class is not for the faint of heart, however if want to learn he's the best teacher for the job. This class was hard but rewarding. At the beginning he's going to act like an jerk but that's just to weed out the kids who just want the grade. I've never learned more in school.
Best teacher ever. The kind you'll want to go back and thank later. He actually teaches and explains how to improve your writing. Bill is willing to take time to work with students and answer questions. If you show up, avoid being late, listen, and do the work, you'll do fine. Do NOT text in class! Bill sometimes swears, so if you're a Puritan...
No busywork, no BS... instead, you get to spend your time focused on the reading! The in-class discussions had depth and breadth, and Bill's level of expertise is frankly stunning. I really enjoyed class, which made the work seem easier. Essay, project, lots of literature, two in-class exams... I felt really supported throughout. Plus, he's funny!
Amazing teacher. Great class environment an he encourages critical thinking. If you do the work and put forth effort, you will do great. He is in the top 2 of my favorite teachers of all time. I took his 905 and 1A and im grateful I did. He loves to teach and it shows.
Great teach, like a fountain of knowledge. He's really a good teacher, but he wont give you a grade you have to work for it.
Bill is an amazing teacher that keeps the class as entertaining as an English class can be. He assigns reading that will need to be done before every class discussion, but nothing to big. He is very easy to approach and if you need to contact him out of class he is very quick to reply to e-mails. He is very animated and a great person to learn from
I got a decent grade in the class but I will definitely never take him again. While he never targeted me personally, he would berate the whole class because they simply didn't do the homework and give them the middle finger. He must has serious anger issues because he swears a lot as others have stated. No teacher is worth the headache that is him.
Took English 1A with Gender Studies focus. Awesome. Learned a lot. Not sure what the last student's problem was; swears, but not AT students. Plus, very funny and smart.
By far the best professor I've had for English in YEARS. I am an English nerd, and have skimmed classes with phenomenal grades... I didn't skim with his. I worked SO hard in this class because he made me want to be better. He saw things I would never see, and made me see things I never thought I could. Please, if you want a great teacher, take him.
English is my least favorite subject, but Davis is very helpful with providing essay ideas and developing them. He appreciates essays that analyze the literature from not so obvious viewpoints and themes. ANALYZE THE WORDS IN THE QUOTES YOU USE FROM THE TEXT. He's not easy, but when you work hard on an essay and do it well, you feel well rewarded.
I learned a lot in this class. I finally nailed the formula for writing papers. He is a very smart teacher, chose great books and knows what he's talking about. However, he is incredibly hard! Towards the end of class he started to get more and more snappy and impatient. Just don't take it personally and still ask for help. Always come prepared
My favorite teacher at West Valley, and probably my whole college career! Prof. Davis gave me a confidence in English, of which I never thought possible. Yes, he is more difficult than average, but if you try it does not go unnoticed with him. See you in Engl 1B this Spring!
Bill is awesome!
Bill is super awesome!
I loved to be tough by Bill Davis. If you come on time, do all the homework, do participation: you will get a good grade! Too sad I cannot take 1B with Bill Davis because of the time issue.
He's a great teacher and after my first essay i got a huge wake up call. When compared to english teachers at wv, he is one of the harder teachers. He definitely plays favorites but thats not to say you can excel without getting to know him. Great person, great teacher, and he really improved my analysis essays.
Entertaining in class but also serious about teaching. He repeats what you need to get down in order to do well in the class throughout, and isn't really a hard grader if you pay attention in class. Actually seems to care about students understanding how to do something, which is kind of rare lol.
Bill is an an awesome English teacher. If you're on your stuff in class and keeping up with all the homework he will love you. IF you don't do your work and don't participate in class don't expect a positive response out of him. No late assignments and no BS if you're ready to work than Bill is an amazing teacher to take.
Wonderful professor. Gets openly irritated when students are generally unengaged in his class, but is very supportive and helpful to anyone making an effort. He doesn't give very much work. Critical with the aim to improve. Not an easy A kind of a class. If your writing is terrible, he can help. If you're a good writer, he'll find your weak spots.
If he likes you, he'll probably tease you at some point during the semester. Funny. Relatable. Wants you to use your brain in his class. He is a tough grader, but for the essays you get a revision after he gives you feedback which is nice. Reading material was actually diverse instead of being strictly written by dead white guys. What a wild idea.
If you don't read the hw prior, you can skim the article a couple minutes before class, listen to other peers during the discussion, & provide some insight. If you talk in class at least once a week you're solid for participation. He's a pretty tough grader & if you have a hard time getting a A/B have a smart friend go on ur doc and really edit.
I would highly recommend Mr. Davis. He is very nice, & clearly shows an interest in improving your writing. The readings were easy to follow, & the essays were easy to write (at least for me :P). Sometimes, though, this class can be a little boring and he openly gets irritated when no one participates. But other than that, a good teacher
Davis' classes can be very introspective and his reading choices are interesting.
He has mood swings. One day hell be funny and nice and the next thing you know hes mean and always has to have the last word.
Funny, engaging, and authentic. I learned a lot about literary analysis. Although I had to work hard, it was worth it.
Professor Davis is a wonderful teacher that has a very fun discussion-oriented class. The assigned reading was very interesting, but you will only do well if you actually do the reading and annotations! If you participate, do all of the assignments, and take his corrections/feedback to heart you will definitely pass the class.
he is an excellent professor to take for English 1. I Trisha had a good time with this professor. It would help students for future classes to take with this professor.
Very vague when giving instructions. Then gets angry with students when they dont understand or do the assignment but not how he wants it done. Continuously says he is very clear on instructions when he is not.
Dr. Davis in this class is an average professor, but 046H as a class is downright awful. It's basically a glorified book-club and every single class is the same routine with just a new couple chapters to discuss for nearly two hours. It's not a hard class if you keep up, but knowing what I know now, I would've avoided it at all costs.
Davis has super great prompts for his essays and allows for a lot of freedom in each one, but demands a pretty quick turn around from when they are assigned to when they're due.
The class started off simple with a lot of preparation. By the end there were two papers due like a week apart. He is EXTREMELY MOODY!!! Sometimes super sweet and hilarious other times cursing us out and asking if we are brain dead. 4 papers in total, one a group essay. Lectures are all class discussions. Honestly not worth the mood swings though!!
Professor Davis probably one of the toughest graders I had at West Valley. He does care about your writing skills but if you don't really care and want an easy A, this is not the professor to take. He allows you to rewrite essays to earn a better grade.
I'll be honest, I struggled a bit early on in this class. But following up on feedback and speaking with him during office hours made a huge difference. I learned a lot about analyzing literature by the end.
He is one of the best professors I have experienced in the west valley. His class is hard but he really cares about teaching and helping students. If you really want to learn the subject, take a class with him. Thanks Professor.
He is the toughest grader I have ever had! He expects you to be a pro at writing analytical essays and even if you try your best on them but its not exactly what he wants, he will fail your paper and then your only way to get points back on it will be to rewrite it using his corrections which aren't helpful.
This teacher was extremely moody and at times annoying. Though he gave decent feed back on my papers the anxiety of whether you were gonna have a decent time in class depended on his mood. Really makes you work for your grade and at times made me do more work than my intense classes. Not worth the effort take Rachael Fields for a better experience.
Bill is very scattered and expects everyone to be top tier writers even though it's a basic GED course. His anger issues definitely influence his teaching and grading unfortunately. It was hard to learn anything from someone who is very unclear about what they want. It was mostly do this and do that better but never how can I help you be better.
This class was pretty fun and interesting. Learned lots of things always got pretty clear feedback on my papers. Peer review was great, probs bc of my partner, and made thinking through ideas way better. Professor was a little bit shoutie. WOuld recommend, solid class.
I didn't enjoy my time in his class at all. He was generally in a bad mood, tended to get up and leave when he got pissed off, would be gone for 10+ mins at a time. Attendance was mandatory, but I tended to ditch just because class time just wasn't that useful. However, 1 on 1 he was pretty understanding and could pass as a decent prof.
This teacher was an extremely harsh and unclear grader. There are no rough drafts, only outlines and final drafts, (where only the students grade the outline), and both have unclear instructions. Not helpful at all, and never gave an example of an analytical essay, or how or what to write in it. Very hard to please despite always participating.
Extremely harsh grader and very passive aggressive at times. The only good thing I can say is that he gives decent feedback that you can easily correct on. I didn't like how we didn't have rough drafts and I just didn't feel prepared enough to be able to get onto his level in terms of being graded. Too hard of a professor and wouldn't recommend.
I had a great semester with professor Davis. Despite other reviews I think he provides clear grading criteria and is very helpful if you have any questions. Definitely participate in class - it will help your grade a lot.
Bill Davis is the worst professor I have had so far. I took his English 1A class in the fall of 2020 and one day he spent the entire hour and a half just scolding and insulting the class. His instructions aren't clear and doesn't give much feedback, he graded my poorly on every assignment I turned in. He's a HORRIBLE teacher. don't take his class!!
Definitely need to have a sense of humor to enjoy this class, or else he may come off as ornery or brash. I took his class in fall of 2019 and enjoyed it. I struggled a lot at the time with writing essays, and looking back on it - I believe he helped me tremendously improve! Pretty easy-going and gives good feedback, so long as you put effort in!
Took English 1B with professor Davis this fall in person and can strongly say he's a very good instructor. He has 1 on 1's with everyone who requests one to get feedback on essays, and submits grades on time. If you follow his grading rubric and read the 3 books he assigns thoroughly, you're guaranteed an A or B.
I had the pleasure of taking his class and I look forward to having him again if possible. He shows genuine interest in his students and really seems to enjoy his classes, which makes him very easy to be around!
Bill Davis will push you to expand your imagination on the pieces you read and TOTALLY WILL HELP YOU IF YOU PARTICIPATE IN CLASS! Show up, raise your hand, smile, make eye contact, and he will help you get the best grade in the class that you can. Makes dad jokes which are funny sometimes and he really takes advice on how to improve his class.
Overall a really great teacher however he is an extremely hard grader. I normally do really well in English however I ended with a C. He pushed me harder than any teacher ever and I am much better of a writer after taking his class. If you are willing to apply yourself I recommend this class. If you are looking for an easy A, do not take this class!
He does his best using good materials and methods, but gets frustrated and passive agressive towards students easily. Attendance is so mandatory your grade will drop from one sick day even if you keep up perfectly while you're gone. You'll learn a lot, but you'll also piss him off at least once no matter what you do.
Bill is very passive aggressive in his feedback on assignments. The grading scale is very rough so try your best on each written assignment. He expects you to know how to write a literary analysis coming into the class. Show up to every single class and try to participate to show that you are interested in the class.
Davis was an amazing lectuerer, who really pushes your ability to write. He teaches you how to create your own framework to analyze to interpret writing. His essays are relatively hard and he grades tough, but that is all for your own feedback because at the end of the year he will bump your grade if he saw you put in the effort (B to A for me.)
Funny guy with good lectures but his class is extremely hard. Be ready to get some harsh feedback and high expectations. This is the kind of class that turns boys into men.
He is a nice guy with a good sense of humor and makes it clear want he wants from the class. As long as you show up and do the work to his standards you should pass. He is a harsh grader though, if English doesn't come naturally to you, though his comments and feedback are helpful and he makes it clear you can contact him outside of class for help.
The profesor is unapproachable, hard to speak to in person. Has cussed at the class and is very passive aggressive in person and in class. Would not recommend taking this course with him, expectations are simply too high. Always been a decently good writer, get good grades on my other writing assignments and past years failed every one.
I took two amazing semesters with this professor. I ended up winning one of the best essay awards because of his teachings. Participation matters! Don't slack off, participate in class, turn things in on time, ask questions, come to class on time... I only ever saw him upset with the students who didn't do these things. Overall, great professor.
He will call you out or get visibly annoyed if he does not think you are participating enough in class. Is a bit passive-aggressive sometimes but uses humor often in class. Always provides feedback on all assignments and all assignments count toward a larger project. Overall reasonable.
This teacher has anger issues. One time i paid for his class and he kicked me out and told me to never come back because I fell asleep for ten minutes.
Bill was a great teacher if you attended class, participated, and did your work on time. He was very supportive of me and accommodated me when necessary. Though if you did not do this and slacked off you're screwed. He's a harsh grader but does so to understand the material. Would recommend but not if you're only looking for an easy A.
I took English Composition at WVC my first semester and was recommended to Bill by a friend who had him previously. His classes are very participation-heavy and discussion-based so if you're not into talking during class, maybe he isn't for you. Nonetheless, I enjoyed my time with Bill and he reminded me why I enjoy writing in the first place.
He is a good professor but he is mean and will call you out if you did not read or if you did something that he did not like. I have cried many times because of him and would not recommend taking him. He does not care that students have an outside life and have other priorities and is a hard grader. Overall I do not recommend his english class.
Extremely passive aggressive in essay comments. he expects you to already know how to write literary analysis essays and will go out of his way to make you feel dumb if you don't already know how to write it properly. participate in lectures as often as you can. he's a VERY harsh grader and does not hold back. if he doesn't like you, you will know.
Mr. Davis is a smart, witty professor. He is mostly forgiving for late work, but I never found a need to ask for extra time on essays. His love for the content is infectious. I would recommend him to anyone who has done moderately well in English classes in the past and is looking for a nice challenge without a large step up in difficulty.
Bill has extreme anger issues. He will make it known that he doesn't like you and if you don't show up to class he will make snarky comments to the rest of the class about you. His class made me feel like a failure. Take another english teacher, avoid Bill Davis.
Bill Davis is a terrible grader
Extremely difficult professor. Took 7% off my attendance grade for missing one class even though I let him know ahead of time. Expresses how much he hates being a teacher. Do not take him.
Bill Davis was intense at first but when he warmed up to the class it was fun to attend and participate. He takes his work seriously and expects the same from you. He was the best English teacher I have ever had. If you do the work correctly you will pass.
Professor Davis has a strict teaching style, but engaging with it can pay off. The class is discussion-heavy, so participate actively. Use the free textbook and tools like Unstuck AI to supplement your learning - it really helped me prepare.
Not a good Tacher, mean person not hopefully what so very if u ask him question about a homework assignment he does not help u at all he gets mad !!! talk bad about students ..
He is the hardest grader I have ever had. He also is always in a bad mood. He projects his democratic views onto you
He got mad cause an another student had a medical emergency and had to miss three classes, he dropped her and she walked out crying. It was disturbing seeing how he didn't care
Great professor, and truly wants you to be a decent writer. Genuinely a kind and understanding person if you put in any effort into the class whatsoever. Great feedback, and although multiple comments have talked about his attendance policy, it isn't really strict if you have a reason for missing class. Put in effort, and he'll want you to win.
Rude in assignment feedback almost to the point of slander and trash talk. Wouldn't hesitate to belittle students in or outside of class. Ended the semester with complaining his students were "pestering" him about grades and threatened, he "might just end up making a change you don't want." Very unprofessional. Would not recommend.
Worst Professor I've ever had. Would constantly trash talk students and leave nasty feedback on assign
