Dean is weakest professor in the School of Mass Communications
Great guy, fun class
This guy will help you to no end if you just ask. Very up front, very cool.
great teacher!
Don't buy the book...you don't use it
Good guy, participate and you'll probably get an a or b.
This teacher makes class fun and is really easy to learn from!

Dr. Dean rocks my face off.
Dr. Dean is a wonderful educator with an extensive background in both the mass communication and educational fields. His tests can be tricky, consisting mostly of true and false questions. Be sure to take advantage of any Q & A time he gives, because thats where all the tough questions come from. Also, pay attention to the movies. Awesome teacher.
The Dean is the best and most caring prof I had all year. Goofy but knows when to get serious. Doesnt get any better

Guy was our Phi Delt Chapter Advisor.... The old man is as cool as they come
I slept through his 730 final and he was totaly cool and let me take one with another class the next day, great guy!
Hands down one of the easiest classes you can take at Tech. He does a good job with the material too, and he tries to keep it interesting. He'll give you all the help you want if you ask.
Bill Dean is THE most badass teacher at Tech right now, and he's pretty funny too. My opinion of journalists and Mass Comm people in general have risen just because of taking Prof. Dean's intro class.
got a 91 on first test - so easy - he keeps me up at 8 in the morning, real good teach, knows his****
mr dean is the best teacher ever! so badass! u NEED to take him at least once! hes funny as hell too!
pure straight up badass.
i think professor dean is a really good teacher and his class is really easy. he also makes jokes in class to try and make it interesting.
Dr. Dean is pretty much the best professor in all of Texas!
he makes you laugh, very easy
dr.dean's class was entertaining, and easy to follow if it weren't for the absence policy i would have had an A but...i missed 10 days. just don't go at 8 a.m.
Coolest teacher at Tech, funny, very interesting, but he does follow an attendance policy. He will teach u alot listen to the man!!
This class was a blast! Prof. Dean always made jokes and always made the lectures very interesting. It's mostly notes but they are way easy, just copy them down. Tests are not cumulative. Just do the review and you will get an A or B on the test.
Professor picks favorites, mostly athletic students, so if you an athlete, you probably don't have to even come to class and he will give you an A, if your not an athlete just get ready to be treated unfairly. Probably needs to retire soon.
Favorite teacher ever!!
Professor Dean is a very entertaining professor but unless your a mass communication major you will be very bored during his lectures.
Funniest teacher I've ever had. Class was super easy, and he makes jokes ALL the time. Study the book & take good notes, and it won't be hard to pass!
He favors frat stars.
Take this class or slap yourself!
Best professor I have had in my 3 years!! Make sure to read the book he read and you will get an easy A.
Great professor. He is straight-forward in his teachings. He throws jokes out like candy on Halloween. Really fun class to take. Read the book, take down the notes, and you will be just fine in this class.
Wonderful professor and hilarious. He loves to tell jokes and give extra credit. All of this lectures are straight from his book which is really nice.
Very interesting class. Joked around enough to keep our short-attentio..look a pop-up
Delightful man knows how to keep class interesting. Tells jokes and shows lots of videos. Attendance is required but I never minded going to Mr. Dean's class
Dr. Dean is the best! All of his tests come straight out of the SMALL textbook (usually word for word). He starts off the class by telling jokes and encourages participation in discussions. This class in an easy A!
Take Dr. Dean! Super easy class, and the notes/tests are right out of his workbook.
He is a really good professor. He really knows what he is talking about. Show up on Fridays for the extra credit. Attendance is mandatory. The only negative is that there is questions on the tests that were not in the review. By the way, he gives you answers for the whole review
I don't understand why Dean is such a well-liked professor. He puts subjective questions on multiple choice exams and asserts his opinions as fact. This class is a complete waste of time for anyone who actually values their education and isn't just looking for an easy A.
He is too cute! Great teacher, notes are straight from the workbook...but you HAVE to go to class and pay attention for your own good! I got an A- b/c the tests can be a bit tricky but overall its good!
Dean is an amazing professor! Super easy class, tests are word for word from the textbook. He really knows his stuff and always starts class by telling some jokes. Take this class, seriously!
The class is super easy. You just have to get the book which is the notes that he put together himself. I still think he is a cranky old man. Not my favorite professor that I have had.
Make sure he knows your name and you will be fine
Looking for a class to pass? Take this one..BUT this is not an easy A. His tests are NOT word for word from the review...100 questions...about 80 T/F...I did enjoy him as a professor..old cute man that tells jokes :) He allows for 5 unexcused absences. He gives extra credit on every friday! Not incredibly hard just a challenge to make an A
He was very funny, and kept the class entertained! The class involved a lot of videos, and wasn't hard at all!
Fantastic teacher! All around easy class! You get 5 absences before your grade is affected, and the only time I used my book is for the the review at the end of each chapter, which he would go over before each test.
This class is great. Bill Dean is your classic firey ole fart with a great sense of humor. He is really easy going but will flip out on you in front of the entire lecure hall if he sees or suspects you on your phone. This class is so fun, so be aware that it is easy to forget that you need to study. STUDY. Follow his lectures and textbook.
Dr Dean is easily one of the most known and respected professors in the COMC at Tech. Students love him for his old man charm and humor (he tells jokes before each lecture). His lectures usually do not go thru the 50 min mark and he follows his booknotes for the class. As on the test are hard to get because of the 80 tf questions but is an easy B
Mr. Dean has clearly been teaching for a long time and knows what he's doing. He is consistent, clear, gives reviews that are very beneficial, and is HILARIOUS. take his classes. he's the sweetest & cutest old man ever. You can have 5 absences. He wrote the book. He rocks
There are only 4 test grades in MCOM 1300 - 002. One for each Unit. There is extra credit though. He has funny stories and if you read the book, you're sure to get an A.
He is a great man! However, a majority of his tests are true or false questions which can be kind of hard. However he is the sweetest old man ever and one of the most respected professors on campus. Highly recommend you have him sometime in your college career. He's also a great connection to a lot of important people so network with him!
Well he is a fun, spunky, full of life professor. However his tests are unclear, I studied for his tests weeks in advance but the TF test questions are worded weird and happen to be the majority of the test. His lectures are enjoyable and he is very passionate about the tops!
Dr. Dean is a great professor and is very informative in lectures. You have to be in class to get the notes because he doesn't post them on blackboard. There is no multiple choice exam, it is an essay exam but the questions come directly from the notes. He tends to go through slides fast so pay extra attention. Overall, it is not difficult to pass.
As long as you have the book during review day it's dead on easy. Very funny man and very informative.
Dean is an egomaniac who has concluded the axis of the earth travels through his body. He imparts zero additions to the text. It is a travesty that this course is required.
Honestly, I'm disappointed in Dr. Dean. I took MCOM 1300 from him and was excited to take Principles of PR from him as well. Right off the bat, this class is different. He relies heavily on the textbook and his lectures literally only go over the questions from the back of the chapter. I could basically teach myself this class with the textbook.
LOVED him as a teacher! Made class funny and enjoyable. Was very clear during lectures and would give reviews for the exams. There are several exams but they were rather easy. Definitely would take him for another MCOM class!
He is a fantastic teacher and I respect him. He pushes you to be better, but he is also there when you need him. He doesn't take stupidity well, and you better show up to his class to get a good grade. His classes aren't easy, but if you keep everything up to date and work at it, you'll get out of there with a high grade!
Dr. Dean is a legend and a great teacher!
The textbook is just a reprint of the tests. All you need to do is go to class and use the book. Easiest class on the planet
Favorite professor by far!
allowed 5 absences, makes lectures interesting, no final just at third test. he's a very intelligent professor and you will love him!
He is a very cool and funny guy. the lectures are long and you can get a bit lost in all the words sometimes but pay attention. He will call you out and embarrass you if you aren't paying attention or if you're on your phone AWKWARD. He teaches a lot of content so the tests are long but he gives the answers as the study guide.
By far my favorite professor. If you sit in the front couple rows and go everyday he will help you out as much as he can.
Texas Tech Legend!
Such an amazing man. Paying attention in his class is easy because of his humor! The tests are tough though so beware.
Dr. Dean is HILARIOUS and always cracks a joke throughout his lectures. He doesn't like phones being out or people sitting in the back of the room. You have to buy the book to pass, but there are study guides in the back of each unit that is exactly what the test is from.
YOU MUST GO TO CLASS. Make sure to have the assignment/reading done BEFORE you get to class.
Great guy! I had him for PR 3310. He will work with you to help you achieve your goals for the class. The only thing i found difficult about the class are the lengthy 100 question tests. GO TO CLASS AND BE PREPARED TO GET CALLED ON!
The class is pretty much show up and pass; the tests are long and tedious though (mostly all true/false, and most of it revolves around number/percentage accuracy), if you get to class after he's taken attendance you are counted absent (sometimes he takes it as soon as class starts, and sometimes he waits until the end) so that sucks, but oh well.
I loved having Dr Dean for MCOM 1300! Most likely taking him for PR. He is a funny professor and keeps you interested in the lectures. The class is not an easy A but if you study and do the extra credit you shouldn't get anything below a B. Test are extremely long and mostly true/false. Theres a review for each exam in your book that is helpful!
He's a really great guy, and his class was enjoyable. We only had three tests along with participation and attendance as credits for the grade, but it wasn't too hard to get all of those things. The book is mandatory because it's basically your book of notes.
Great Professor, he wrote the book so all the lectures will be easily the same thing is in your book. Classes are really nice. Great choice for the credits..
Bill Dean is the best
Four tests (about 100 multiple choice questions each test). Can be funny. Top hat for attendance . good professor. Take his class if you need MCOM 1300. Very helpful.
Very solid professor, doesn't ask that much of you. All you have to do is show up, listen, and be there the day he goes over the test review.
Easy class, no homework. Go to class and you'll pass, the textbook is cheap too.
He take attendance so you technically have to go, but if you get the code from someone you're solid. The test is the exact review mostly so literally buy the book study the review and you'll pass. I think I went to like 5 of his classes and I got an A. His lectures are super boring but he's a pretty funny dude.
Dr. Dean was a pretty good professor. The material could be boring at times, especially when he showed videos in class. The book is a lifesaver: the only grades taken are exam grades and the book's study guides are very similar to the tests. Do extra credit and show up to class!
Bill Dean is the BEST!!! Listen to the reviews, read the book, every single answer is in there and it's a small textbook that doesn't cost much at all.
Best prof I've ever had. He is an older man with a real passion for teaching. I learned so much from him and really enjoyed his lectures. You NEED the book as the test reviews are in it and his lectures are basically word for word. He kept the class very intrigued and laughing every now and then. I definitely recommend him to everyone.
Dr. Dean's class was not a lot of work nor was it difficult. The book has all the information you need. Do note that his exams are somewhat tricky and will make cramming for his exams more difficult. The course was enjoyable overall
He is a great professor and very funny. Not a blow off class but I think it's well worth the education.
MOST BORING PROFESSOR. but he has got to have the easiest tests I've ever taken. If you can drag yourself to class and get the attendance points you will make an A.
Professor Dean is awesome. He will work with you if you just talk to him and have a valid excuse and good work ethic. His tests are hard because he wants you to read the material and understand. You have to work hard in this class to do well, and he makes sure of it. Good professor and caring dude, but be ready to put a lot of effort forth.
Bill Dean is a legend. Hell will probably ice over if he dies (he's gotta be immortal). I bet he waxes his head because it stays so shiny. Lit professor though. Funny too thankfully.
Overall a good teacher, his material is just very outdated and his lectures are not interesting. I found myself dozing off or working on other assignments because he's not the best at making the material engaging. However, if you go to class, do the reviews, and study you can easily pass this course.
The old man loves to teach. But it is kind of boring. Lecture heavy. Buy a used textbook with the answers in it. Saves time and money. Passed just because of it honestly. Go to class though unless you have a friend that will give you the code(s). Other than that good luck.
Amazing professor but the class is very test heavy. If you don't go to class you'll miss out on a lot of the information that's going to be on the test. Also everyday in class you get questions about the reading and if you don't know the answer you get a zero.
Fair attendance policy. Test come straight from book and lectures. Amazing professor.
I LOVE BILL DEAN. Great professor, his textbook is just his notes from the class and reviews to help you pass. I recorded when he'd go over the reviews the class before the exam and it helps a lot. 5 free absences. He's VERY knowledgeable. Only participation and 4 exams so nothing to stress about. His lectures are interesting. AGAIN, I LOVE HIM.
Although i didn't take his class as serious as i should've because then maybe i would've got a A in his class, he was an easy teacher! Very intellectual and strict with cell phones but if you study straight from his book then YOU WILL PASS! Would recommend!
I LOVE HIM. Take his class, you wont regret it.
Bill Dean is probably the most experienced professor I've had to date. He understands that we're human beings and make mistakes and he's happy to help you out. Do the review, read the chapters and you'll do just fine in the class. Attendance is taken through tophat and can effect your grade so make sure you make it to class.
For this class with Dean you HAVE to show up because he calls on people every class to answer questions from the book (which you need to pass). The exams are heavily T/F which can suck but if you study and actually do the questions (they're also on quizlet) then you're good. He doesn't take extra credit for this class so make note of that.
Bill Dean is a legend. His class is simple, 4 units, 4 exams that are not cumulative, and the opportunity for lots of extra-credit through SONA credit. His reviews are not always 100% what is on the test, but if you show up to class, do the review, you will get a good grade in the class.
Dr. Dean was a great professor, made you laugh at times while also getting the material across.
Dr. Dean is the best professor I have ever had. You can tell how passionate he is about this school and that shows in his teaching. His lectures are very enjoyable and the small jokes he throws into his lectures keep the class light. The class is mostly based on tests, with 4 tests making up around 80% of the final grade.
Literally the most genuine & humble man and professor I've ever met. Highly recommend before he retires.
Took MCOM 1300 and PR 2310. MCOM was an easy show-up and pass just listen to the lecture. PR was a little more challenging he calls on people each day to answer questions so make sure you show up. Love this man!
Dr. Dean was a good professor although I do wish he was more clear with the chapters he was going to cover each week because you have to have the book questions prepared ahead of time and he calls on you randomly to answer them. His syllabus overall is confusing and not very clear but that is the only complaint I have. A funny and genuine guy.
Love this guy!! One of the most respected professors at Tech. This class does not have any homework, however you do have to take time to study for tests because they are usually very specific!
Professor Dean is one of the greatest, if not the greatest professor at Texas Tech. His class was super easy, but you have to go to class since attendance is taken and he calls on everyone twice during the semester to answer chapter questions for participation credit (which are easily found on quizlet). If you pay attention in class, you will pass.
He is a really good professor and is very respected at Tech. His lectures can be a little long and fast, and his tests are very specific and true/false heavy. All of your grades come from tests, so make sure you study! No other assignments and the final is not comprehensive and is weighted like any other test which is nice. A pretty easy class!!
You should probably go to class if you want to do good on the exams. He throws in jokes to make the lectures less boring. He gives opportunity for extra credit and is very into what he does. I believe he was extra helpful and I would love to have him again.
I have no problem with his lectures, they aren't very exciting but they're fine. Tests are about average- not easy but not super hard. But if you are sick for a long period of time, or need a special circumstance he is not helpful at all. He was also dishonest about the way he calculated my final grade for the semester.
He is funny, but his lectures are still boring. Quizlet helps a lot for this class, but not enough. His tests are long (70-90 questions) and have a lot of specific questions. He doesn't provide the slides, so there is a lot of notetaking. But again, Quizlet helps. Your grade is based almost all on tests. Idk how anyone gets an A in this class. RIP
Bill Dean is great. He has been at Tech for so long and has a lot of interesting stories to tell. I recommend that everyone at Tech should take him. His class isn't the best but it's just an Intro class (so you can't expect much). The tests are a bit confusing just because most of it is True/False. Just go to class and listen, and you'll pass.
This class is pretty time-consuming. Not necessarily hard, but you have to study and answer questions before each class. Attendance is absolutely mandatory because if he calls on you and you're absent it will hurt your grade. Stay caught up on readings and study for the tests in advance to do well. An A is definitely possible!
Love Bill Dean. Great guy
a great iconic man, quizlet got me through it, HEAVY true false- almost half of questions are true false usually on the tests
Dr. Dean is legendary! This class is a great intro into media and communications. He has been around for awhile and gives great insight. It is a large class but you are able to participate. The class is easy if you show up and take notes. Test are easy and require you to skim through notes or power points.
Lots of work.
Bill Dean is a great professor, made an uninteresting topic, interesting enough for me to want to show up to class. Show up, skim notes and powerpoints before a test and you'll be great.
Bill Dean is a legend. I was in PR2310 and MCOM1300 and enjoyed his classes. The classes are lecture heavy so be sure to show up to take notes. Occasionally there's guest speakers and class videos and those WILL BE ON THE EXAMS. So go to class! Go see him a week before your exam and he'll give you hints. If he likes you he'll round up at semester!!
make sure you pay attention and take notes in this class, almost all the exam reviews are on quizlet which is nice to study. his lectures are very heavy but Bill Dean is such a great man and he is very knowledgeable about what he teaches. hell have a very thorough review session before all exams so make sure to go to those because they help a LOT
Dr. Dean is simply a GEM. He is so funny and adds his humor to all of his lectures. There are a few tests that are mainly true false so they are a little confusing. He does a ton of extra credit which is extremely helpful. He is easy to find outside of class and always willing to help.
Dr. Dean is actually a professor that knows the subject in and out and stays up to date on it. He makes jokes, asks questions, and is organized. He is a nice and approachable guy. His lectures are instructional, and he keeps them interesting by telling a short story or joke. You go to class, take notes, and you pass. Seriously don't skip class.
Many refer to him as a legend. He is well respected around the college. He assigns certain questions then asks ones he didnt assign but if you dont have the answer you get a ZERO, answer them all. Your grade is 100% dependent on attendance and the 4 exams. Exams are not cumulative, but VERY HARD mostly T/F worded tricky.
Prof. Dean knows the subjects that he teaches better than anyone else and also stays updated to current events too. Because of his old age he's experienced a lot of what we haven't been able to which means we get a firsthand perspective of what media was like back when it was slowly rising. He calls on you without notice and will also call you out
No assignments other than tests. Lectures in class, and hes big on attendance. But the tests are the only thing thats graded and theyre not proctored. Probably the easiest class ive ever taken.
Dr. Dean is the best!! Had him for two classes in my freshman year. He really cares about his students. He's a legend around campus and everyone knows him. He really inspired me to continue in PR. He always starts class off with a joke or funny story. Attendance is very important if he sees you're trying he will help out with your final grade.
This class was not difficult, but you do need to learn how to type fast because he goes way too fast and does not go back. His slides have barely any information on it, so when he talks it is hard to understand what to write down. His exams are hard because not everything on there was covered, and he does not give enough time. I wouldn't recommend
Bill Dean is the goat for real. If you want a good class and a good time, he's the man. I had him in the mornings, and it was worth getting up for.
An icon at Tech and an easy class. Attendance is mandatory but especially with covid this year you don't even have to take notes just study the review (which he gives you the answers for) and you're good. If you actually make an effort it's an easy A but you can not try at all and get a B easy.
Bill Dean is a nice man but not a good professor test are very heavy gives you an hour to do 96 questions sometime even 100. The review is basically useless probably helps with 20 questions out of 100 so not really much. Talks a lot in lecture about things that aren't even on the test. This class and professor are all over the place don't take him!
This man is an ICON. I took two classes my freshman year and loved them. his lectures are hilarious and always tells you a story before class. How ever if you miss class he will not send out notes so make a friend in that class if you miss often. Tests are ehhh most things are on quizlet.
Awesome professor and better man. Took MCOM 1300 as a junior and loved it. He takes attendance and all the info to pass is in the lectures so take lots of notes, and go to class
Bill dean seems to care about his students, he will crack jokes and keep class fun always
The only grades you get are the test grades. The only thing you really have to worry about is making sure you show up for the tests. I didnt have to read the textbook because he gave a review for each exam that was super in-depth. He also gives you a bunch of options to do extra credit.
There are a lot of questions on the exams that arent on reviews that he gives. If you study the review and are a good guesser then you should be able to make an A. He doesnt seem to like the media or enjoy younger generations so its confusing why hes a professor.
Very lecture heavy, and the notes aren't posted online, so make a friend and have them send you the notes if you miss class. He does take attendance every class, he gives you a review for every test, and you won't really need to use the textbook, so don't miss the review days. Your only grades are the 4 tests, and do the extra credit options!!
Bill Dean is a really great person, however this class was difficult. Attendance is mandatory and he will take off points to your average is you miss. The tests are difficult even if you study the review. The final had 30 questions which had us quote a guest speaker. I like Bill Dean as a person, but this is NOT an easy A, most people do not get As
I have professor Dean for two different classes and two different semesters. Let me tell you, he has earned my upmost respect out of any professor Ive ever had because he has so many years of experience in mcom and PR. However, homework, tests, quizzes, etc are all left to the TA.
Bill Dean is the experience at Texas Tech. He's a really funny guy, but his lectures go by very fast and you just have to make sure you listen. Very hardworking and passionate about what he teaches.
The Dean Machine. What a guy. 4 tests, attendance is mandatory, gives a review for each test. If you memorize the review, the recommended book questions (these help a ton for tests but not required), and do the extra credit quiz you will be solid. Got an A on every test. No homework, never really took notes, be sure to be there on review days.
All of the reviews are true, he is truly an icon. He is an amazing professor with an obvious passion for what he does. Attendance is absolutely necessary or you will not pass, but you don't want to miss his class anyways. Even if you aren't paying attention, he will always crack a joke that will get a chuckle out of you. No homework, just 4 tests.
Dr. Dean truly lives up to the hype. He is super funny and really nice if you make an effort. Attendance is mandatory so come to the lecture and do the reviews and the tests won't be that bad. He also gives extra credit if you are on the border of a higher grade, which helps.
Bill Dean truly is one of Texas Tech's best professors. This man has been teaching for decades, but he is still hilarious and in-touch with his information. Honestly, this was one of the best classes I have ever taken, and I would highly recommend taking a class from this incredible man.
I love Professor Dean's class, during his lectures he can definitely be quite funny at times and overall they are pretty interesting. The exams had at lot of questions but as long as you studied you would be fine.
Professor Dean is an engaging lecturer, though his classes move quickly. Attendance is a must, but the four tests are manageable if you use the review guides and unstuck ai for exam prep.
100% would take him again. Sweetest man ever. Make sure to record the lectures because some things on the test won't be something you took notes on. Things he says outside of the notes will be on the test to see if you were paying attention.
