He is a good professor very clear and concise, but the class was extremely easy... he offered too much bonus, I and I feel that I didn't learn as much as I could have, but if you want an easy A in Chem and aren't going too far in Chem take him!
Dr. Donovan is a great guy. He will do anything to help his students. The sad thing is ... it is very easy but I know a lot of people who gave him a bad evaluation because they weren't doing well in the class. I would recommend him to anyone!
this guy is the kid who you made fun of in middle school, very funny guy
great guy actually makes the subject fun
Didn't cover things in depth or expect us to accumulate an in-depth understanding, but gave a good overview of the material. Had low expectations of class; lots of extra credit, curved tests. Easy 'A' if you don't need a strong chemistry background.
Funny guy! Makes everyone laugh alot. Good class but honors section moves fast so becareful! Pretty tough if your not a big chem buff.
Donovan gets the job done. Like people say he's a lttle strange. I enjoyed his class.
hes funny
funny and made chemistry enjoyable
i had him but never saw him.
Dr. Donovan is a great teaacher and an excellent advisor. He will do anything for his students and especially enjoys teaches chem 2. at least thats what he says in class. I would recomend Dr. Donovan to anyone who is interested in chemistry. the demos in class are also enjoyable.
great teacher.. loves what he is doing and makes class fun and enjoyable and easy. always willing to help anyone with anything.. take his class and u will never regret it
Very good teacher, makes lectures interesting, if you have to take chemistry take it with Dr. Donovan!

All he did was hand out worksheets for class. The study sessions are the only things keeping my grade halfway decent.
fairly good teacher, bad lecture, i hated the overhead notes, way too much writing. good guy though and had a nice curve in the class.
SOOO much better than other chem profs I've had. He's A LOT of fun in class always trying to make it as pleasant as chemestry can be. Very funny and his handouts are a lifesaver. You know exactly what's going to be on the exam before you get it and he curves. Best chemestry prof I've had yet (out of three) and I'm taking him again.
Very hard Chem class, most everyone failed the first exam, i suggest taking it in the summer. Donovan rocks, but it is hard to retain info in his class, we went through the papers to fast!!! :(
this class is EXTREMELY hard. Mr. donovan is cool, shows alot of experiments. However, he is a poor teacher, he goes through the papers WAY to fast, and i couldn't understand the homework at all. i suggest u go to jim's study sessions, but don;t expect to get a good grade,i am hoping for a 70%. This class is horrible,y do i need chem for engineering?
Make sure you go to the study sessions, especially if Jim is still there. Online homework much harder than tests. Go to study sessions to do OL homework. If you go to class and study sessions you will be OK. Most of the notes are on handouts so there is less writing in class. Hard class, but good professor overall.
Very cool person, who makes chemistry AS FUN AS POSSIBLE! I guarantee that Donovan is the best teacher to get for BOTH chem 1 and chem 2, and DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE SCARY "It's Hard" comments, because donovan ALWAYS curves 10-20% at the end of the semester, so like a 55% goes up to around a C-!!! Awesome guy, yes...he's "weird" lol, but a MUST GET!
Donovan is one of my favorite profs! He is funny and actually ENJOYS teaching fresh chem. He goes fast but has a lot of info to cover. If you actually read the text and then goto class its a breeze. I got better once I stopped using his handouts and just took my own notes though. Expect to get a lower grade on the first 2 tests than you plan.
Excellent Teacher!! Really cares that you learn and makes it fun!
probably the best chem 2 prof one can get at Akron. tries to make chem fun, which i appreciated in his class. fair curving too. get him!
Chemistry can be a dry subject but Dr. Donovan makes it interesting, and fun. I really enjoyed his class and he is Always willing to help. He expects you to work but there are lots of opportunities for extra credit and to work with friends on the homework. Wish I would of had him for Chem 151.
Very nice teacher, but not very easy. Pay attention, go to class, go to study sessions and study on your own time. Chemistry is not easy, but as long as you keep up expect at least a B once the large curve comes at the end of the semester.
He is a super nice guy but rather flamboyant, which is entertaining but at the same time it is hard to take him seriously! Make sure you go to the test study sessions and look over the old tests. His TA knows everything and Donovan reuses TONS of test questions from his old exam. And don't worry, he curves at the end. He doesn't want you to fail.
Just like everyone else said - GO TO THE REVIEW SESSIONS. You might think you know what he is talking about, especially if you have taken chem before, but your test grades will surprise you. Dr. Donovan is really funny and nice, but he can be a little long-winded.

Bill is the man. Chem 2 is the worst class in the world. half my class probably had F's at one point in time, but the man won't let ppl fail. He posted a ton of extra h/w to boost grades. The class sucks but he is the best of the best. and besides whats funnier than a 6'6" prof that is a goofy as him?
Best chem professor at akron, explains subject material very well and is always willing to help. first two tests will be rough but he curves alot towards the end.. he doesnt want to see you fail. take his advice though, study and do the suggested hw and youll do fine
Great teacher. A little bit odd. Class Attendance is not a big part of the grade.. exams mostly are. Have heard that he curves pretty dramatically at the end of the semester. Overall, great teacher. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN OVER OTHER PRIN I TEACHERS.
Fun professor but I relied greatly on the curve.
So ya donovan was a great teacher he truly wants to help you. its just that the class itself is pretty hard. just make sure you study are. i would also suggest getting donovan if you can and even those attendance is not mandatory you still need to go b/c the class it very fast paced and you will get behind fast
I read the book like crazy, studied the notes, made my own study sheets, and still got F's on his tests because they were incredibly hard. But, if your F's are better than other people's F's, you're still set because he curves heavily. DO THE HOMEWORK, it really helps your grade. I failed every test and ended up with a C+, so dont panic.
omg...I though i was going to fail. I literally got a nothing better than a 62% on any of the tests. there were only 1000 pts in the class. He curves SO much. just hang in there and you should be fine. :)
Funny guy, don't stress out about test grades. I litteraly failed every test and wound up with a C. SHOW UP TO CLASS and DO THE HOMEWORK. You should be fine if you do both of those things.
Funny guy, very entertaining. I really liked him as a person. Explains things well. Easy if you go to class and pay attention. Make sure you go to classes because he gives quizes every day within the 1st 5 minutes of class. Don't worry too much about your test grades because there is a very big curve at the end.
Loved him. Loved the class. If you attend the class, do the homework, do the extra credit, and pay attention you should be O.K..
I got a C on the first test, F's on the next two, and did well (never received exact grade) on the final. I did one extra credit essay and all the online homework and got a B!!! I definitely slacked off way too much but Dr. Donovan CURVES SOOO MUCH that I ended up with a B!! TAKE HIM!!!!
He's about as nerdy as it gets, which is actually a good thing in this case. His tests are hard, but as other commenters have noted, he curves like crazy. I got an A despite my highest exam score being a 75. (Note that attendance is not mandatory, per se, but it does figure into your grade.)
Pretty good teacher failed about every test we had and did half the online put I still passed, so you know he curves high in chem 1. Funny in lectures just try and attempt to pay attention on the plus side he puts all his lectures online.
I recieved a B+ in Dr. Donovan's Chem 2 class. He curves the class. I would recommend him as a teacher.
Stop talking about how much Donovan curves! Going from a C after a semester of perfect attendance and having more than a 90% average for the online homework and not doing worse than a C average on the test, and then getting a C+, is not that great of a curve!!! I never really was able to learn anything in that class except what I learned myself.
Stop talking about Donovan's curve!!! After a semester of hard work with perfect attendance, more than a 90% average on the online homework, and a solid C average on the test, going from a C to a C+ is not that crazy of the curve, don't take the class the curve won't even bump you more than a plus. Overall don't take this class!!
I cannot recommend this man enough! His lectures are a bit odd (he goes off on wild tangents sometimes) but he really knows his stuff and as long as you do the online homework, answer the clicker questions, and put a solid effort in on the tests you will do well in the class. I would recommend him over any other chem II teacher.
I got roughly all C's on tests and homework, always attended class and ended up with an A. I've heard others say there's not a huge curve, so I'm assuming I did well on the final - which he said would be heavily curved.
I have to say, I rarlly rate horrible prof, but he is one of them I didnt really get anything out of his class, his lectures are boring and confusing alot of students say they take him b/c he s easy are wrong, usually if you are a good student you will do bad and if you dont pay attention the curve gives an A, curves are really confusing
got an A but i thought i would fail. curve a bunch i guess. we all took turns bring every ones clickers for attendance. funny lectures kind of odd does cool experiments. take him but don't stress when you average 65%
Tests are hard but all multiple choice. His jokes are bad but hes and alright prof. He does his best to teach the material well and generally succeeds
His tests are hard, and for Prin 1 I got straight D's on them but I got 100% on the homework and ended up with a B in the class! Just go to class, keep up with the homework, and study for the tests and you will do fine. I recommend him.
Professor Donovan is a really awesome professor, he jokes a lot and rambles a little but he is funny and helpful and explains everything. the tests are hard and i should have failed the class (F,F,D,D on tests) i admit i didn't study like i should have but i did the homework and studied for tests i ended up with a C+ . i recommend him
Easily distracted, gets on long tangents so he never finishes materials that need to be covered in class. Presents easy examples so when you get to his tests (hard!) you don't know how to do problems. Nice guy, average prof. I'm taking another prof for Prin 2. Massive curves.
He is very funny and nice. Chemistry is a tough subject and his tests are hard but he posts old exams which is awesome. He also gives you the answers to your exam the night that you take it, so you can figure out your grade almost immediately. Once again, he is very funny and nice. He is very intelligent and knows his material well.
Dr. Donovan puts the notes on springboard so you can review easily. Connect homework is a real pain and attendance is mandatory if you want those points. Do plenty of outside practice to make up for no in class work.
Tests are HARD! I did not so well (C,D,D,C), however i did go to every review session, went to class about 50% of the time and did a little more than half of the online hw. That is all of the effort i put in and my final grade should have been a D, but i got a B+. Just put in some effort. Dont stress if your final average is low. the curve helps!!
Dr. Donovan is pretty good. He's funny and nice but goes off topic sometimes. Shows some pretty cool experiments in class (like exploding a balloon filled with hydrogen gas). I got a C and B for exams and then an A on the final. Ended up with an A in the class. I couldn't make it to any of the study sessions but if you study a lot you'll be fine.
If you go to as many classes as possible and go to the review session, you are guaranteed to pass. Easiest general chemistry teacher in my opinion. No online homework.
Not a bad class if you show up. Final was borderline impossible but he curved it a fair amount I heard.
Dr. Donovan gives pretty dry and boring lectures. He could cover the material in half the time. His test are multiple choice, about 30 questions, so not too much to complain about there. Would not take him again.
Dr. Donovan likes to ramble on and on about the most random things, but he seems like a very nice guy and as long as you thoroughly study the practice test his TA hands out, you will do well on the tests. He also curves quite a bit.
He's a nice and funny guy but his actual lectures are more of a joke. You'll end up teaching yourself all of the material.... IF you're that disciplined...
Dr. Donovan is hilarious even if he uses the same jokes every day. He's such a nice person and wants you to succeed. I worked very hard in this class and was helped by my LA. I got a B+ overall. He curves!
Dr. Donovan is a wonderful Chemistry professor! He is so funny in class and you can really tell he knows a lot about and loves Chemistry. I would definitely take him again. The tests are kinda hard but he does curve and if you study a lot you'll be fine
Mr. Donovan is a great person, his tests are tough but if you solve the practice tests you will do just fine. Cracks a lame joke once in a while and tries to make the class more lively however the lectures are a bit too long. He curves, I am going to take him again for chem 2
Even though I am not doing to well in Dr. Donovan's Principles of Chemistry I class, there is one thing that I admire about him. His attitude. This has been literally the worst class of my life, but his always positive attitude has made me want to keep on with the fight. I have never once seen him angry or in a bad mood. He's my nicest prof. by far
Dr. Donovan is a bit of a Goof ball. He is funny and can sometime go off on a tangent about nothing, but he gets back to the topic and finishes the planned lecture. If you show up, take notes, and attend the additional study sessions you will not have a problem passing. The tests are not impossible. There will be a curve. I would take him again.
He's super funny and knows how to explain concepts so you will understand them. Feel free to ask questions in class, he will gladly stop teaching to answer it and show you and the class how he got the answer. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
His lectures are very hard to follow because he goes on little rants and gets sidetrack all the time. His tests are EXTREMELY hard! I feel like he expects everyone to know this information and doesn't really want to help. I would NEVER take him again but unfortunately I'm failing and he is one of the few professors for chem.
This class empowers you with knowledge in Principles of Chemistry I. You'll be challenged but if you work hard and seek for assistance-tutoring services, instructor office hours-you will definitely succeed. Complete all readings before class, do Connect homework on a regular basis, study well for exams (do not cram) and you will be fine. Good luck!
The online homework is extra credit (50pts). The review packets before each test are 75% of the test (seriously word for word) so memorize them. He curves the tests about 8-11%. He is really good at explaining the material and answers any questions you have. If you have the option, pick him over any other chem teacher!
I liked Dr. Donovan. He was a nice guy, but sometimes he didn't explain things clear enough and got sidetracked often. However, he posted all of the notes online and did several examples of problems that were clear to follow. His tests were kinda hard, but he curved them pretty heavily, so don't stress too much.
He is literally the nicest teacher ever! His class (chem I) was just like high school chem. He curves tests and the final wasn't even that bad. I got an A in his class. He is super friendly and not arrogant. I wish he taught me ochem:/
Donovan is a pretty interesting professor. He's a bit goofy, but he knows chemistry and can explain it pretty well. The tests are hard and a lot of students don't do well on them. The class is still easy for the most part though, since he curves each test and typically curves the grading scale at the end of the semester. It feels hard, but it isn't
Dr. Donovan is an awesome professor. He gives you all of the materials you need to succeed in his class. Practice tests are super helpful along with the review sessions. He definitely tries to make chemistry (a dry topic to most) interesting and relatable for his students. Will definitely take him for Chem II!
He goes on rants ALL THE TIME. Literally hates this place. Doesn't really focus on topics. High test grades are in the 60 percents. A good curve, but if you are moving on to another chem class, you won't know much without work. Its COMPLETE outside learning. I don't know anyone not failing before the end of semester roles around.
Dr. Donovan's Chemistry for Everyone lectures is difficult to pay attention to because it's a long class but he is extremely lenient on grades and will curve them if necessary.
William Donovan knows the material that he is teaching extremely well, and usually will be happy to answer most questions that you may have after class. The tests are difficult, and you can expect a lot of math questions. However, he will grade on a curve, so if you are willing to work you can get a high grade without too much trouble.
His class is a joke. I don't know why people on here are complaining because he teaches you exactly what you need to know for the test and he goes at a slow pace. On each test there may be 2 or 3 tricky questions but the remaining 47 or 48 are easy enough to answer in your sleep. He is also hilarious, so I would go to class for some good laughs.
He's quite a quirky man, which makes his lectures a lot better (chem is very boring and difficult to me). Knows his material and wants you to succeed. Puts all his notes online. Textbook was hardly used and you could get away with the online version. Definitely do the online homework and STUDY for the exams (four midterms). Generous grading curves.
Great prof. He's hilarious so the lectures are entertaining (which is good because they're also long and slow). He knows chemistry really well and curves a lot. Do the online homework if you're average at chem. He teaches the material well enough in class, but still look over the notes outside of class regularly to make sure you actually learn it.
I've heard horror stories from my friends who have different chem teachers. Bill is a very nice guy and tries to make lectures interesting by craking jokes. Tests can be rought if you dont study but he gives you practices tests which i recommend you do because it is the exam with numbers changed around. will be talking him for chem 2
Often is off topic and hard to follow. One on one interaction isn't much more helpful than the lectures.
Good guy, not the best lecturer but makes the exams very doable if you put in the work.
His exams are very fair, gives practice exams that are like the actual exams. you do have to put the work in to get an A but, it's chemistry, it's not a class you can just wing it. Put the work in and you'll get an A because of his generous curve at the end. The final is hard, since its state wide but his curve makes up for it. Dono is da bomb
Dr. Donovan is definitely one of those teachers who reads entirely from the lecture. He does make insightful and helpful comments and writes out his thoughts clearly. Be prepared to take a decent amount of notes and tests are incredibly lengthy. If chemistry just clicks with you, you'll do fine. I struggled a little but he curves the grade heavily.
Spends the entire class period lecturing from his notes that are displayed on the projector. However, he makes a lot of jokes to try and lighten the mood which honestly made this class more enjoyable! Homework was on ALEKS and had due dates twice a week (wed. night and sun. night). Exams aligned very closely to material and online practice exams.
He is a great guy but gets a little off topic during class. However, this makes class at least a little more enjoyable.
There's a reason Donovan is such a sought after prof. at UA. He's such a great guy! I've never been good at Chem, but he made Chem2 actually make sense. He doesn't make it "too easy", but he actually gives you lots of resources to succeed, such as videos going over practice tests. He's really funny, down to earth, & clearly has a passion to teach!
Very funny guy who knows what he's talking about. Be sure to study, however, since he won't be able to cover everything in class.
He is very fair in his grading and will try to give you as many opportunities to earn points as possible.
Dr. Donovan is funny and very knowledgeable in his field. Make sure you put in the effort and you'll be okay. Pretty exam heavy, but the lowest grade is dropped. There is plenty of other grading points so there isn't too much stress on exams. If you want a fun, sometimes boring chemistry experience, take Donovan, he's awesome.
I dont want to blame the prof for a bad subject. That being said, my entire grade is based off of exams. However, he curves them pretty well so that's nice. I wasn't able to finish an exam, and he played circus music at full volume until all tests were in which made the experience far worse. His personality is unique.
