This guy is funny. One class, he spent 20 minutes talking about his wife's food
Class is fun. This guy is insane.
Great professor. Very interesting and entertaining. Lots of reading however.
Complete jerk who laughs at students who come for help. Thinks he is a genius
this **** gives term papers to do over spring break....
Puts up a front, but very easy grader. you dont have to read ALL the books he assigns.
Excellent professor, one of my favorite and definitely among the best. Passionate and knowledgeable about the subject matter, very helpful, and makes class as enjoyable as possible. Tough grader, though.
Pompous old windbag who tries to come off like he has strong convictions. Objects to helping students as strongly as he pretends to object to Republicans. Loves to hear himself talk. Makes ridiculous rules for essays (2 pages worthof words you can't use).
A jerk. He actually made me cry during class! He calls even his students stupid, allows nobody to comment on/question what he screams out of his mouth, and is constantly making very inappropriate sexual remarks to female students, and is a buffoon.
HE IS A HORRIBLE PROFESSOR!! AVOID A CLASS WITH HIM AT ALL COSTS!
RU would have no history department without Bill Gillette. NJ History was difficult, but I learned more than I ever expected. Uses a good combination of lectures and videos to make his class interesting. I just wish he could figure out how to use the VCR
Great professor and person. Willing to listen to you but you must be able to defend yourself.
He's an idiot, but I didn't need to do any of his readings or even pay attention in class, his essays are bs. i did them all the night before without opening the books before hand.
Gillette is interesting. Sex and mint julups is what he's all about. He's a good teacher, but needs to stop being so anal with his stupid 2 page word list that you can't use in your papers.
All I have to say is EVIL! both him and the classes he teaches, EVIL to the core!
he should not and never should have been a professor. his comments can be considered sexual harrassment yet no one has gotten the nerve to report him. he teaches the class in a such an opinionated state. all i have to say is TENURE
If Rutgers had more professors like Bill Gillette, we'd all be better off. Funny guy with an ego, but what professor doesnt? Very helpful on the papers and even takes kids sailing when schools out.
His left-wing rhetoric was so grating that I felt like puking
Definite Lefty, but an overall nice guy.....once you got to know him.
ugh this class was soooooooo awful, after the first couple of lectures i just didnt go and got firstclassnotes for it and did fine, was definitely a good choice
this guy is just plain nuts...lectures are boring as hell but you must sign in...2 papers determine grade but they arent hard..second paper counts for 99% of grade if you show an improvement..overall not a bad class
He is definatly a left wing guy, 2 papers- 50% of your grade each, and he has 100 things not to do on the papers. He is really harsh if you ask him for an opinion. If you are a Republican, the lectures may be really annoying. Go to First Class notes
very entertaining, highly recommend
If you get a chance to take this guys class. DO it. It's a good grade. 2 papers make up your grade. He is anal, and you have to sign in, but just use the class to do crossword puzzles and then research the papers on your own time.
Had him nearly 20 years ago. A real jerk. Self-centered, arrogant, and disloyal to his advisees. I'm a Ph.D now, but no thanks to him.
total ass#$%le, in love with democrats but hard grader, too demanding...too much info to know and learn in class...
Extremely entertaining, knowledgeable, and approachable. He makes the three hour lecture exciting.
This guy is absolutely bonkers, he screams all the time. It's so funny hearing him complain about the Republicans and everything else he hates. The man should either be in a mental ward or on Comedy Central, I'm not sure. He's just hilarious. PS. DON'T SMASH AND BASH NEW JERSEY
Foams at the mouth from screaming so much and spends only 3 lectures on Reconstruction. Likes to equate everything with "good sex" and has an irritating list of words you can not use in papers, even though he doesn't even grade them - some high school teacher does! AVOID THIS CLASS!
One of the most entertaining teachers at Rutgers. Lectures are easy to follow cause he outlines them for you. He rants are hilarious. Hates Republicans, but I don't blame him. Papers are kinda hard, but as long as you half read the books you'll probably get a B.
Unless you're a sucker for punishment don't take US II with Gillette! Gives hard papers and doesn't tell you how to do them until two days before it's due (and he gives the assignment a month prior). Lectures are boring and he seems bothered when you ask him questions or for his opinion.
HELL!!!!
hard, confusing papers, doesnt tell u what he wants in the paper untill about 2 weeks before its due. maybe funny lectures if your a liberal. pretty boring either way
Hardest F**ing class of my life. He was your typical republican bashing leftist nut job god for bid if you dont agree with his political views. Also there are only 2 chances to pass his class. However hes all about improvement so if you screw up the frist time you have a second chance. Its hard to figure out what he really wants
That class was terrible. He rants and raves so fast you can't take notes and he expects you to use each and every piece of information in your papers. No opinions allowed. His way is law
Stop the belly aching! He's tough and life's tougher. If you want an easy "A" take Ceramics. I had him 13 years ago (1992) for my Senior Research Paper and I'm glad to see he hasn't lost his edge.
Don't even bother trying to take notes, buy a tape recorder. Attendance counts and is necessary. Gillette is opinionated and arrogant but underneath it all, he's a nice guy. Not an easy class though.
Oh man I loved this guy...1) i am a republican and i loved hearing his anti-bush ramblings b/c he foams at the mouth and its amusing 2) his lectures on ww2,vietnam,etc are real indepth and real informative...just go to his office hours and get help on the papers and he'll give you tips on how to get an a as long as it doesnt suck, he is the man
i like history but didn't really learn much in this class cause his lectures were so chaotic. go to class cause of attendence jot some notes down most are in the outline you buy...don't need to read the books until the paper then just take some quotes and b.s. away. if you are a solid writer an A shouldn't be a problem B in expos A in history class
The best professor I ever had. Extremely qualified, intelligent, funny, and eloquent. A real pleasure, unless you're looking for an easy A. However, if you are sincere about his class, he'll make it an experience you won't forget. In fact, he's the only prof i can truly remember! All this, and I am a died-in-the-wool republican/conservative.
This class is really easy. There are only 2 assignments for the whole semester and your grade for the class is the highest grade you get on either of the two assignments. Hes totally wierd. Attendance is neccesarry only for sign in so try to take it with friends, and switch off signing eachother in.
I am a pretty liberal democrat, and hate most Republicans, especially George W., but this guy just wouldn't stop with the conservative bashing. It just got so annoying sometimes, that I wanted to yell out, "get back to the civil war!" Your grade in the class is the higher of your two grades on the take home mid-term and final, which was good.
A funny guy. He reminded me of the song 'American Idiot' only because he thinks conservative America is a bunch of morons, and he is correct. He has a tough attendance policy, but you can easily lie to the TA and say you were in all the classes that you actaully weren't. Your grade is the better of 2 papers, which he doesn't grade (graders do).
I once saw him throw a chair out of the third floor window because a student praised Christie Whitman.
Professor Gillette is the best professor I've ever known. He's personable, hilarious, and wise. If you take the time to get to know him, you won't regret it. Take his class, do well, go to his office hours, and you'll have a true friend in Bill Gillette. Highly recommended.
One of the most INTERESTING professors I ever had. His tirades against Conservatives & Republicans can be too much at times but overall he's a funny guy. His Civil War class is one of my favorite classes of all time. His notes are thorough and his papers, if you've kept up, are doable.
he is a terrible professor and is too rigid in his old ways to be an effective teacher today
easy easy class. His lectures needs more structure to them. Must go to class for attendance grade. Only have to do 2 papers. Read the parts of the books that you need to and you will get an A or a B. The books you read are good but you will not learn too much from him because his lectures are very wild and puts you to sleep.
Taught mostly US Civil War & Reconstruction when I was there in the early 90's. He was my Senior Research Paper advisor and he gave me a mention in his Book "Jersey Blue" about the reconstruction period. One of the toughest teachers I had at Rutgers, but worth it. If he is still teaching & you are up to it, take one of his classes.
worst professor at rutgers ever, hes rude and arrogant with no concern at all for others opinions or feelings, he is constantly insulting people and making crude remarks to the class, he will even go so far as to call people stupid and yell at them to their faces. never take this guy as a professor, u will feel like u are being degraded. TERRIBLE
Worst professor in History Dept. Hates Republicans and rants against them in every class in a childish manner. Funny at first, then boring. Flunked 90% of class on first paper. Reads from prepared text in a rapid fire method. Be sure to read ALL the text books & take good notes. Although I got an A, I would not recommend him. He needs to retire!
I got an A in the class and I had to work my ass off for it. It is very time consuming and tons of reading. Make sure you learn how to write a paper the way he wants, otherwise you'll end up with a bad grade. I learned a lot, but it was a vigorous course. If you aren't up to the challenge / don't have time, I wouldn't recommend him.
Gillette demands that you read the assigned readings. you dont have to. i tried, they were boring and i fell asleep. In order to insure that you recieve a good grade, take notes... take the best damn notes you can. I didnt read anything until it was time to write the papers, and my notes were decent. the result, i got an A. You will do badly on the 1st paper
Awesome guy. Grades are based on two papers in middle and end of semester. Not recommended for those who don't like to write. Reading involved. Lectures are insightful and humorous, but mandatory attendance. Gillette will give you all the help you need on your papers. Excellent for serious students, esp. those thinking of grad school.
This professor knows his stuff. 2 papers, that's all. Must attend class, and his liberal leanings might ruffle some feathers, but you will learn something taking this class.
The class is pretty self explanatory. He gives 2 papers of which the better grade will be your ENTIRE grade for the class. He demands that the papers are insanely detailed, expecting well over 20 quotes from his lectures and books he assigned. He gives an outline for every lecture, but if u can take very detailed notes you will get a B+ or A.
his political rants are funny at first by the end of the class i wanted to throw my two hundred fifty dollars worth of text books at him. his comment that conservatives revel in liberty and shirk responseibility really offended me. i am no ultra right winger but i am a repoublican and in the military. i hvae taken responseibility has he?
He is a horrible professor, totally biased things he is the greatest thing in the world. I do not care for the President or many of the Republican Presidents but I respect them he does not. He should retire.
I had bill for NJ history, Civil War & Reconstruction and US History II. I got an A in all of then. all you have to do is go to class read the text and write two detailed papers. He grades fair and offers to curve your grade if your fist paper isn't so hot. Just follow instructions and you will get an A.
I had him for two classes, got an A in both, one being my seminar and the other being a 100 level.. I loved him, he is sarcastic, but extremely cares about the student. Take if possible
NO! No, no, no, no, NO! PLEASE! If you care at all about your GPA do NOT take this class. This man is the worst professor I have ever had. His rants are annoying and useless. He uses the most difficult grading system I have ever seen. I never want to take another US History class at Rutgers again. Thanks a lot, Gillette.
A very intelligent and thorough historian. He wants you to write extremely detailed papers and come to class all the time. He can get a little droning and at times insane with his rants but he is a valuable teacher overall. Depends on your personality whether you'll enjoy his class or not. I could see how he could rub some people the wrong way
Entertaining prof. He could offend a couple of people, especially conservatives.. but otherwise very funny. Class is relatively easy, i didnt read the text..only when i had to do the papers, got an A in the course. Easy A.
The guy gives tough assignments, but nothing a motivated student can't handle. If you decide to take the class, make sure you do the reading - you will be happy you did. Sweat the details, and when you write your papers be thorough, provide evidence, and give consequences. If you do all of this, you will do well in his class.
Gillette is the man. He knows his stuff and conveys it well. If your serious about history then take this course; if not, then do not. It will challenge you but it's worth it.
The man is an absolute genious. I've learned more in his class than any other class at Rutgers. However, his papers are difficult and you must read the books, go to class, and pay attention. If you don't have the time/motivation, I would not reccomend his class. Some advice: Take the class with a friend, it'll help with the workload.
I like Gillette but hate the class. He was certainly entertaining at times, but not nearly entertaining enough to keep your attention during the three hour class session. Gillette is a highly intelligent man but unfortunately his lecturing style was not for me. Be prepared to put in long hours of reading/writing.
I understand that he is a very smart man, but I walked out of his first lecture and immediately dropped the class. Not only did he make various inappropriate sexual comments, but he also has a very boring lecture method, He reads facts verbatim off of papers. Very boring, very pompous.
This man is one of the worst professors at Rutgers. His personality is horrendous!! He has a filthy mouth and makes several inappropriate sexual remarks. He also screams at the top of his lungs. Don't be afraid of him empty bottles make the most noise. I want to learn about American history, not sit through his screaming. How DARE you Gillette!
i absolutely hate him. he is the most unhelpful person. he doesn't know how to use email (because he downright refuses and makes it clear). It's the 21st century. How on earth do you expect your students to get in contact with you? RETIRE RETIRE RETIRE RETIRE!!!!!!!!!!!
More than half the class got up and left the first class. I wish I was one of them. Do not take a course with this prof.
This course gets dropped by a lot of people. Gillette said he is going to modify the course and give it a lower number. He talks way too fast to take notes and assigns a lot of reading. Most people got a C or lower on the 1st of 2 papers, he gave someone an F---, but the 2nd paper becomes your grade in the course if you do better.
Took NJ history with Gillette, the grade depends on two papers. Got a D on the first one but after visiting his office hours and asking him for help I got a A for the class. He's a tough grader, the class is hard but not impossible. Pay attention to topics he is passionate about and include that on the paper, if u want a challege take the class!
WORST TEACHER EVER. 2 out of 40 students passed the first paper. that says it all.
by far the worst human being on the planet. I have neverrrrrr in my life had such a horrible teacher. WARNING DO NOT TAKE HIS HIST OF NJ CLASS!!! all he did for 3 straight hrs was read super fast directly out of some book w the most boring voice. he would scream at students if they even got up for the bathroom. needs to be fired!!!!
needs to be reported by everyone so he can be gone for good. He almost pushed me down the stairs the last day of class bc he was so mad I accidentally left the cover sheet to my final paper in my car. He screamed and cursed at me for about 30 minutes straight and I am a very nice girl who normally gets straight A's. horrible old bitter man
poisonous liberal who consistently had to voice his opinion about contemporary politics even though it was a civil war & reconstruction class. the worst type of person who has no regard for other peoples' opinions or beliefs, was offensive with his cursing and demoralizing of the armed forces(of which he is a 'proud' veteran) and blasphemous. Fhim
He knows his stuff, puts up good resources, but of course its the Democrat in him that gets the best of him. Why doesn't he foam at the mouth when he talks about radical left wingers? His office hours do help your paper, but he does use vulgar language and peverted nonsense not expected with a man his age. Love the guy, hate his immature behavior.
He knows his stuff, but has an ego big enough to have its own congressman.
i got an A in this class, his books are the best in the subject to his merit, and visiting him does help give better grades. however his teaching methods are dated, course outline is photocopied, preaches liberal nonsense rather than the civ war and is pretty ****ed. he knows his stuff, but he needs to calm down a bit.
Easily the best professor I had at Rutgers. Prepare for a challenge, and if you can think critically, you will enjoy this class. If you're from Livingston and interested in rote learning, you will not. He's opinionated, no doubt, but always willing to enjoy a well-argued debate. Learned a lot, enjoyed his lectures.
I have taken two 300+ level courses with Professor Gillette and they have easily been my favorite classes taken at Rutgers. This man is one of the most knowledgeable and intelligent individuals I have ever met. He's extremely helpful on the papers and is always willing to sit down and talk with you. His humor is very entertaining as well. Great man
He's a genius, and as long as you follow directions, you'll get an A, and even if you don't, he'll give you a second chance. He doesn't spout "liberal nonsense" like some people say. He just insults any prominent people that he recognizes as "historical illiterates."
Honestly, if you don't need this class, don't take it. Although he is an interesting man, his style of teaching is horrible. He reads as fast as he can and you can just hope to write everything down. No powerpoints, no anything. Your only grade is two papers, which is he a very tough grader on. DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL.
Really cares about his students. He just reads which is boring, but he shows films and is an interesting guy. If you work, you'll do well.
He's a great professor. He's really smart, even though he can be dull. He grades tough, but see him and ask him specifically what he wants in your paper. If you are just a face in the crowd he wont give you an A. Also, you must do the readings and attend class, as everyone should.
Papers are very lopsided when it comes to what he wants. Does not give good feedback and is a tough grader.
I was a history Major with a concentration in the Civil War and Reconstruction, So I spent many a class with Bill Gillette. Trust me, this was no cake walk, but I found him extremely helpful, but a yeller. lol My senior paper was on NJ troops in the Civil War and it got me a mention in his book, Jersey Blue. I still go to see him speak.
Bill was my mentor in college. Rest in Peace.
Complete A-Hole, extremely politically biased and rude to students, particularly women. Do not recommend, this guy must have some real dirt on the college to manage keeping this position for so long.
