Awesome! Bill's enthusiasm for the topic is contagious and I was always in an excited mood after one of his classes. Tests are mostly MC (and mainly from lecture, with slides provided ahead of time) and there are 5 short quizzes with the lowest quiz grade dropped. I would definitely take him again - he is truely an excellent, excellent professor.
The highest caliber of teacher! Bill is enthusiastic, understanding, caring, and brilliant. The material is complex, but he has a way of radiating his enthusiasm and brilliance so that you find yourself empowered and inspired to exceed even your own expectations. We're so lucky to have him here. Take his class before the Ivy Leagues find him!
Bill is the best teacher ever. He really knows how to teach. He loves the material and really makes class interesting. I think he could teach anybody anything! So lucky to have him at PSU. He is a one of a kind.
One of the most difficult classes I've ever taken. Bill was an excellent instructor and truly wants his students to understand and succeed. While the material is difficult Bill does a superb job explaining in a gripping and entertaining manor. I left this class wishing I would have better applied myself. Whatever it is take a class with him!
Bill is and amazing instructor and I learned so much in his neurology class. He clearly explains very difficult material and makes it interesting with side anecdotes.
Bill is not only knowledgeable in all aspects of this field (undergrad from Brown & Ph.D from OHSU), but he is a genuinely kind & friendly person. He answers any & all questions thoroughly (no matter how stupid they are) with a smile on his face. He also has a bike helmet that looks like a brain.
Awesome instructor. Excellent Powerpoints, everything available online. Clear speaker and very friendly / approachable. Great feedback.
He is incredibly passionate about what he teaches and makes the subject easy, clearly desiring to see students excel. However, he spends the entire class on two slides at times and at times carries on too much, not knowing when to cut off student comments.
Amazing professor! The material is difficult but Bill makes it interesting and fun. You can tell he is passionate about teacher and wants his students to succeed. Grade is based on quizes, midterm, and final.
Great professor! He is a really nice and funny guy. Very open to helping anyone and wants to see students succeed. Only downfall of the class is that most of your grade is based on four quizs and two tests so there isn't much leeway.
Great professor, and very friendly! He goes over the slides very thoroughly and is very helpful when it comes to answering questions.
Bill is a great person. He goes over the slides but doesn't cover the book. For his test you need to come to class because that is all he will test you on
You will succeed in this class if you read/watch the weekly lectures. Attendance isn't mandatory but recommended. Also- DO NOT MISS DISCUSSION POSTS. Free points just by doing it 2x/wk=great buffer against poor test scores. BE WARNED: absolutely. no. late. homework. accepted. EVER. Easy to succeed if you turn in the work on time! Great professor!!
Great Prof! Took him for perception. Just 4 quizzes, expect some art projects. yeah, a little weird for a psy class to do art projects but he collab with an art instructor
Very nice guy and very smart. However, psy-347 (Perception) is in no way, shape, or form a psychology class. It is 100% biochemistry/physiology. If you're studying to be a medical doctor, this class will be right up your alley. It's mostly rote memorization of obscure names of body parts. If not, the class will probably be extremely difficult.
Bill is an excellent professor. He is very passionate about what he teaches and you will learn a lot if you attend lectures. Quizzes and exams are based primarily on his lectures and in class discussion. He is very fair in grading and tries to give you all the tools necessary to succeed.
Bill is a nice guy and honestly wants students to succeed, but doesn't seem to grasp that success isn't going to happen for most students when we register for what was supposed to be a 300-level psychology class and instead get graduate-level neurobiology. Tests and quizzes are incredibly hard, and the art projects just add insult to injury.
Bill is one of the best professors at Portland State. He cares about the material and actually wants to see his students succeed. This class is tough (all neuroscience) but the added art projects help balance the grade book. This course is well worth taking. Consistent and accurate real-life examples and a great sense of humor.
He's a great, enthusiastic guy with loads of knowledge in the field of neuroscience, and he's happy to share it all with you.
This is the best professor I have ever had. He is my mentor, and has been an integral part to my experience at PSU. The subject material is hard, but he makes it as clear as possible. His lectures are interesting, he is engaging, he can explain it to you a million different ways. ATTEND ALL STUDY SESSIONS. They have been key to getting an A.
Bill is an awesome teacher. His psychopharmachology class covers a lot of material, and he is very clear and helpful when you don't understand something. Graded on 4 quizzes, a midterm, and final but studying the slides is enough to get all the material down for them. Gives extra credit opportunities. Highly recommend this class!
One of the best. Bill knows his material and conveys it with tremendous enthusiasm and energy. His Psy courses helped me excel in high level biology classes, and he helps facilitate the local neuroscience community. His classes are not easy but are worth their educational weight in gold. Highly recommended if you are interested in neuroscience.
If you don't think that Bill is the greatest professor of all time, then you're a fool and should drop out of school.
Dr. Griesar is the best professor I have ever had. Even if you find the material slightly boring, his enthusiasm and real-life examples of the topics make you want to come to the lectures. I highly encourage everyone to attend study sessions as his tests/quizzes are very challenging. I will definitely be taking all of his classes.
Dr. Griesar (who insists you call him Bill) is the most passionate instructor I've ever met. He devotes a huge chunk of his time to teaching neuroscience with STEAM components to students with academic priority status. You won't regret taking his classes!
Bill is by far my favorite professor at PSU. He is extremely interested in his specific subject. He is very good at breaking down the subject and making it easy to understand. An amazing and interesting lecture. I will be taking all the classes he does here at PSU.
This class was the one I stressed about most my first term.. He was very vague about testing and not helpful with specific questions.
BIll is an amazing professor who is very enthusiastic about psychology. Great for help in class, but not as good with emails. His teaching assistant is good at responding to emails though. 4 quizzes, a midterm, and a final, along with 4 coloring assignments. Paying attention to lectures is key. He words his exams so you have to critically think.
Bill is nice, but this course is weak. It's just review of the intro-level material, then about 40 student presentations (yeah...), and then lectures by grad students. You can skip every class and still get an A, just use the study guides to prepare for tests. The bar for PSU psych courses is extremely low!
This course was pretty annoying. It was mostly taught by the students of the class, which means most "lectures" were "taught" by novices. How is this a good way to learn? Don't be a minute late on your question assignments (which no one reads) or you'll lose 4% of your grade each time. Class attendance is not necessary. Just study the study guides.
Attendance isn't kept or required to do well in the class, yet I found myself in class almost every session because Bill is super fun to learn from. He's very smart, straightforward, and eager to share his knowledge. This class was an easy A if you give even the slightest effort in keeping up with the chapters and slides. I highly recommend Bill!
I recommend that you read the assign chapters because a lot of it will be on the quizzes, but he also goes over it in class. There are 4 quizzes and a final; they are all worth 20 points, sometimes you have to draw and label but most will be multiple choice/short answer.
I enjoy his class very much. Attendance isn't required. No homework but there are five things that are graded. 4 quizzes and a final. The difficulty of the quiz is in the middle. Not to hard, not to easy. I would take another class from him.
Griesar is a great professor. He truly cares about the topics he teaches, and he is excited about learning and teaching. He is a genuinely nice guy, and he tries to help as much as possible. However, I had a hard time with this class because it was very fast paced and full of hard material. Exam grades hurt me, and he said grades were final.
Straight up... I did not try as much as I should have, but I'm going to do my best to not let that affect my review of him as a professor. He is INCREDIBLY smart... Especially in the field of neuroscience. But don't take this class unless you are looking to take an art class because that's literally all it is. Not at all what I signed up for.
Didn't touch my textbook once. Just look over the review guide and you're sure to past all the test and quizzes. Lectures are fun and sometimes he'll get off topic. Attendances is kept by TA's.
Bill was good! You can tell he is very passionate about Psychology. I didn't open my textbook once. He puts the lecture notes as well as additional material all on D2l. The TAs kept attendance. The questions on the exams and quizzes make you think and could be about something he mentioned one time very briefly. Extra credit was offered frequently.
Really passionate and smart instructor. Flexible. Super neuro need. Hes almost too smart to be teaching undergrad. This class is a weird combo of art + super detailed neuroscience terminology. Sometimes it was hard to connect the dots, and I could have used more conceptual high-level why this matters. I appreciated study guides/easy quizzes + EC.
A truly amazing professor! He really loves the subject he teaches, and provides loads of extra credit opportunities. Come to class, take notes ON his lectures, and you'll do fine! His exams also have extra credit points!
Overall an amazing professor hes passionate about what he does. The TAs in the class were in charge of the class (graded assignments). They were helpful but one thing that was annoying was, why create a study guide if the quiz/test isnt gonna be on what you put on it. My advice is to just look over the lectures & you dont even use the book
Bill is probably one my favorite professors so far in my three years of being at Portland state. This is class is very well organized, so you're never blind sided by what is coming up. It is a little hard if you do not know much about anatomy, but he is very good at explaining!
Had 2 classes with Bill, wish I could do more. His lectures are exceptionally well-delivered and he is super helpful & supportive. He really cares about the subject and will get you to care, too. Lecture notes & study guides are great; no surprises on the tests. Only complaint: the "panel of TAs" is a little weird & distracting.
Bill is a super fun and nice professor. I thoroughly enjoy him as a psych professor. Hes a neuroscientist, so he is very well educated on the brain. Hes kind of goofy and socially akward at times but that adds to his character. The class is an easy A and the tests are easy, but I would def read the book. He mainly goes by book vs lecture (:
Although Bill is a great teacher and makes learning exciting, his PSYCH410 Advanced Neuro Psych is a bit of a mess. Half way through the term, grad students run the course instead of Bill. Introducing new syllabus, assignments, and grading scales. Because of the difference in grading my overall grade was affected. Wouldnt recommend this class.
Very passionate professor. His excitement and enthusiasm for neuroscience is contagious. Enjoyable lectures. Very thorough going over concepts over and over until you got them. Questions were welcomed as well as stories of your own personal perceptual experiences. Quizzes are easy. Show up to the lecture and do the study guides. You'll get an A!
I took Griesar for Psy 347 - Perception. He's beyond exceptional. Highly intelligent, knowledgeable in his field, and a skilled communicator. I recommend him and would take him again in a heartbeat. Pay attention to the syllabus, he clearly outlines expectations, dates and gates in there. If there is a study session before a test, take advantage.
I took PSY 200 with Bill and he is the best professor!! There was only 1 online quiz, a couple of in class quizzes, one midterm, and final. There were weekly coloring assignments, which made the assignments very fun. This class is an easy A if you want to boost your GPA. I never used the textbook. I just printed the slides and took notes on them.
Bill is the best psychology professor I've ever had. His passion for teaching is admirable and refreshing. He's very caring and wants everyone to understand the material. I definitely recommend taking him :)
We don't deserve this gem! Seriously--best professor I've ever had. How did Portland State get so lucky? Better keep him in their b a s e m e n t before someone else snags him. Attendance isn't required but if you have any interest in the brain, GO! Actually... just go anyway and be #blessed.
One of the kindest and caring professors I had. Very passionate about what we were learning. The only thing that was a bit irritating was the fact that the study guides weren't comprehensive. Class attendance was mandatory but Bill made class fun and interesting. Quick at replying emails too.
Prof. Griesar gave really interesting lectures and I felt I learned a lot about psychology from his class. I got by almost the whole class without using the textbook, just make sure you take notes in class and pay attention to the information on D2L.
I've taken 2 classes with Bill so far and he quickly became one of my favorite professors! His classes are always engaging and he is an excellent teacher. His course combines lecture with practical application through art projects that pertain to the lessons. It's clear that Bill cares about his students and their learning experience.
I really enjoyed this class! You are graded on 4 quizzes, 4 coloring assignments, the midterm, the final, and then attendance so showing up can help a lot if you don't do as well with the quizzes/tests. His lectures were super interesting and they are all based on the slides he posts on D2L (I didn't need the book at all). True gem!
Bill is a great professor. He's excited and passionate about teaching, and he's always telling interesting information related to the topic that keeps the lectures interesting. The quizzes are challenging, but he gives extra credits and study sessions run by the TAs are available. Would take again
This is my favorite professor at PSU. He is so passionate about what he teaches and genuinely cares for his students like no other. The material isn't always easy but the way he explains and presents the material makes this class an easy A. Truly engaging and inspirational.
If you're looking for a professor that genuinely cares about his students and is passionate about what they're teaching, Bill is your guy. Especially during a global pandemic. He might not be the most tech savvy teacher, but he does his best to engage with his students during zoom and appreciates answering questions/helping students if they need it
I could tell he was a pretty cool and quirky guy, but maybe I would have a different attitude if I didn't hate the remote format so much and took this class in-person instead since the material was fascinating. I'm also not an artist, so some of the assignments were a drag. Hopefully I will get to take him again in-person once PSU opens up!
I can't recommend taking courses with Bill enough. He's been the highlight of my entire experience at PSU. He extremely passionate about not only neuroscience, but his students and the community. The material in some of his courses can be difficult, but he offers many resources such as study guides, TA-led study sessions, "cheat sheets" on tests.
I've always been interested in Psychology and Bill has made this fascination for it even better. His lectures are interesting, never boring. There are coloring assignments are a great way to visualize the class material. As well as weekly discussion posts/replies which are simple enough. The tests and quizzes are too bad either. Highly recommend
Really nice and understanding.
Trust all the reviews! If you go to Portland State, Bill is a must. He is brilliant, beyond kind, and the subject matter is interesting.
Bill is seriously my favorite professor. He reminds me of a cross between Bill Nye and Bob Ross in that he is super enthusiastic about the material he is teaching, and he is really caring and calm. There is some homework but it's pretty easy and it actually helps you learn the content. There are some quizzes too but he puts out great practice tests
Your grade is made up of discussion posts, weekly assignments, and 5 quizzes. It might as well be an art class, since each assignment involves you creating a work of art. However, Bill is an amazing professor. His directions are very thorough and it's super hard for you to fail the class.
Dr. Griesar is a great professor. He's super enthusiastic, really knows what he's talking about, and loves to answer questions. The only thing is that he does not cover everything he puts on his class page so most of the time, you're learning a lot of the content on your own. There is little homework and the assignments are simple.
Professor Griesar is by far one of the best professors I've had at PSU. He is so kind and genuinely cares about his students and their success. Lots of notes to be taking, but tests and assessments aren't impossible to pass with a good grade.
I took the Pharmacology course. Bill and this course were real gems. I hate remote learning with a passion, but I actually looked forward to this class every week. Do you find drugs and neuroscience fascinating? If so, then this is the class for you and take it ASAP!
Obviously passionate about teaching but his organization of the online class is overwhelming and sporadic. I have ADHD and found this class to be extremely difficult due to the sheer amount of tabs to check off each week (+30-50!!). Do not recommend if ADHD, not neuro-divergent friendly, online structure is too busy!! Art assignments were cool tho.
I adore Prof Griesar. I had him for Cognition as well as this course, intro to neurophysiology. To put it in a nutshell, he is so enthusiastic and happy to be teaching about the brain that it's contagious. I have really bad depression and I look forward to the lectures every week because his good energy is infectious. Wish every class was with him!
Really enthusiastic professor, always looked happy to teach each lecture. The class structure in the site can be very overwhelming, lots of places to look at to find information. The class overall was very easy if you watch lecture, take notes, and take the time to look through the tabs. There were also exam guides that helped.
Dr. Griesar always showed up to our 9AM class with overwhelming positivity and excitement for the content we were going over. No textbook required, but the online content can be OVERWHELMING. The quizzes are difficult if you don't put in the work/take notes. It's a lot of info, but the class is fun if you participate.
I love Bill's enthusiasm and dedication to his work and teaching--it's contagious! There is a lot to read, but most of it is optional so overall, not too homework-heavy. The quizzes are helpful but don't take them without doing some studying since they cover multiple weeks. I would definitely recommend for anyone interested in Psych or Neuroscience
Very friendly and passionate professor. Lots of reading and most of it is complex information (very neuroscience driven). If you miss something, you will be confused going forward. I found the discussions to be boring because everyone is answering the same questions, which makes it hard to have a thoughtful discussion. Quizes are tough and wordy.
A truly engaging teacher, and someone who cares about the well-being of his students. Didn't have a textbook because he believed in using open-source materials only, which is much appreciated from a low-income perspective. Helpful outside and inside class!
Classes were a little too early for me so I never had I chance to attend them in person and while he records them I never watched. This is due to his very detailed module section that goes over each topic in depth, he also provides notes, slide shows and mini videos. As long as you go through the modules it's an easy A. Also all exams online!
Bill was a great professor. His T.A.s were also helpful.
I have had more classes with Prof Griesar than any other professor at PSU, by choice. He is truly a joy. The content is interesting and he is very in-depth with answering questions as well as being very approachable. I have missed the occasional deadline and him and his TAs have been understanding. I highly, highly recommend taking classes by him!
Bill is amazing! I love the enthusiasm which he brings to the classroom. He wants students to learn and makes sure to answer any and all questions. The only downside is that his teaching style is a bit odd since he doesn't use PowerPoints and just talks during lecture. Overall he is a very interesting professor.
I've taken a few of his classes and he is easily my favorite professor at PSU. Workload is easy and manageable, and he doesn't have high expectations when grading. Awesome guy.
Midterm and final study guides were spot on but all the other quiz info needs a more structured update. He doesn't give much time on quizzes and doesn't accept late quiz work so the sooner you get it done the better. I would take him again, but going in, know to STUDY!! TAKE NOTES, you will 100% use them.
Great lectures and tons of resources for doing well in the class. Great to listen to and has a great teaching method.
Bill is passionate about neuroscience and it shows! He is so happy to teach it made me feel happy to learn, and neuroscience is not something I have ever been interested in. Not the easiest course, but a great one! Clear grading criteria, fun projects, and reasonable grading. 10/10 would take a class by him again!
Kindest professor I've had so far. You can really tell he cares about his students, and his love for psychology shines. The class material is super difficult if you haven't learned about cells/cell function before, but the assignments are super easy and are typically some form of art project or short discussion
Bill is a nice guy but assigns so much reading for a level 200 class. Not to mention the videos in the reading that are necessary to get all the information for exams and quizzes: all of which he covers beforehand in class but too fast and eclectically to follow. Cool class but so time consuming for a good grade.
Do every assignment and you will get an A in the course. There's art assignments and they're great - I am NOT artistically inclined but it does not matter. You are just graded on being able to demonstrate the concept, not technical abilities or style. Stick figures + a bit of effort would probably get you full credit. Passionate and enthusiastic.
This was a hybrid class, with one in-person class a week. Bill's lectures were always engaging and interesting, but taking notes could be difficult sometimes because he doesn't really use his powerpoints and just talks during lectures. He is very friendly and always has positive energy! Easy grading and T.A.'s were always helpful and available!
Rating: 1/5
The best way to describe Bill Griesar is... He is the Ms. Frizzle of Neuroscience. If you desire to move into that field- take his classes. He's very engaging and inspiring, he loves questions and interacting with students in class. He has so many opportunities to get involved in the community as well!
This is one of the professors I regret encountering the most in my entire academic career. I really don't want other students to have the same experience I did so I'm posting this as a warning. Stay away!
I would like to strongly discourage students from taking classes with this professor!
Great professor. Ignore the negative reviews. Easy A and he is very knowledgeable when it comes to neuroscience. Class is hybrid and attendance is not mandatory.
Prof. Griesar is engaging and makes the difficult material digestible. Attend class, use the free textbook, and try Unstuck study - it was a lifesaver for exam prep. The workload is manageable, and he cares about student success.
Greisar is amazing. He is knowledgable, flexible about making time to meet with students, creates opportunities for students to learn and get engaged outside of class, and he makes a bio heavy topic approachable to psych students. That being said, it's really more of a neuroscience course than psychology, so don't expect anything to be easy.
Just because your own life didn't go the way you wanted doesn't mean you get to take it out on your students. This sad little man apparently didn't get the memo. He also doesn't put much effort into creating the learning modules which are messy and disorganized.
This professor obviously fancies himself a genius and loves to go on ego trips but in all honesty it's mostly just delusion and there's nothing exceptional about him. In reality he is of average intelligence at best.
Dr Griesar is one of my favorite teachers at PSU. He is super caring and passionate about neuroscience. He knows how to explain complicated concepts even if you're unfamiliar with biology or neuroscience, but also goes very in-depth with his explanations! I highly recommend taking him, especially if you're looking to continue a psych career.
This professor is mean and rude to his students and it's motivated by his own insecurity. He deserves the bad reviews he has received on here. His behavior goes way outside what's acceptable and it's good to call it out.
Lots to learn with lot of resources, good canvas integration, lectures are engaging and make the time go by fast. Assignments engage both the left and right hemispheres of your brain. :)
One of my fav professors ever. Had to write a review since it seems like there is one person who keeps giving him one point reviews. Not sure why they're so hateful but I guarantee Bill did nothing to deserve the low rating. He is an amazing professor and I could not recommend taking a class from him enough!
The professor frequently made sarcastic comments towards students who asked questions. His intimidating demeanor made me hesitant to ask questions, even when I was confused. He belittled students answers in front of the class as well. While knowledgeable, his delivery often made it difficult to engage with the material due to his demeaning tone.
Engaging and genuine professor with a passion for neuroscience and education. Interesting projects & quizzes, with tons of resources made available to students: weekly study groups & notes/subject reviews by grad assistants posted in canvas, lectures recorded and available online, external project references, club connections, & extra credit.
