Probably the best philosophy teacher on campus, and a great cook ;)
very hard. not very prepared. essay tests. unreasonable expectations.
Bring your brain and your homework with you. Tests are death!
a very intelligent professor. worthwhile if you put the effort
changes assignments randomly. extremely hard tests.has NO idea what he's doing.
Ugly mofo. Thinks he is Aristotle himself. Hard tests. U better read
He's very hard but extremly clear. And test questions are from the homework.
About the best Intro to Philosophy prof one could ask for. Difficult, of that there is no doubt, but managable IF you're willing to put in the effort. Wouldn't recommend him for Logic, I must admit. One of my favorite profs ever.

good teacher, very clear, makes you interested in the subject matter. However, the fact that he includes participation in his grade sucks if you have nothing to say.
The subject is really difficult (time consuming) but he teaches it well, must do your homework the tests come right from it, and like math you can't skip classes without getting screwed (what the heck is he talking about?).
Tries to make things easier. Completely arrogant. If you have a bad class, he's a bad teacher.
The best lectures I have seen yet. Keeps material very interesting and you think a lot...awsome class!
Professor Hoaglin's a great teacher. He takes a complicated subject like Logic & actually makes it fun. He's down to earth, funny, always there when you need him, extremely smart (maybe too much for his own good), & an all around good guy.
On 4/18 I made a comment to the effect that I wouldn't recommend Mr Hoaglin for Logic. Since then I've discovered that the other profs who teach Logic at GC are inferior, plus I've grown to like his style more. I now *would* recommend him.

Capable professor, a tad disorganized but thoughtful and interesting
I found him to be easy IF you did your reading. If you had a problem all you had to do was ask and he would be glad to clarify. I really enjoyed his class. His stories about being a cook get a bit repetitive but amusing.
Great teacher. I went into class thinking I wasn't going to make it through. He inspired me and praised me for work well done. You must work at it, but keep up with reading and attend all lectures and you'll do it! This teacher changed me.
He is a good teacher. He offers all helps what you need for your homework. Funny lecture, however, you'd better not skip any class. Highly recomment!
this guy is the man, i learned so much, the reading is difficult and so are the tests but its all worth it. i changed my whole perspective on things cause of him. he helped claify lot of debatable subjects
Hard class, but well worth it. Changed my perspective on everything. Test are hard, but no matter what don't quit. Well worth the time and effort.
He is good teacher! I was changed cause of him!Although his is not easy, but all worth it!. Turst me, you won't be regred.
This teacher is horrible. He spends all of his time checking out the girls in class and talking about his past drug and alcohol problems. Definitely an intro class. He puts the same old spin on the same old material and no new perspectives.
Arrogant, tries to be a "coach" but needs to be more of a teacher. Despite all of this, he means well.

His lectures sometimes go astray, but in the end he always ties it up. Without the lectures I would definately be lost, because the book is harder to understand than his lecturs
He is a great teacher, I would recommend taking him. His class is not easy, I thought I got an A on a test and I got a C. If you read and do the reading questions you'll do good. Sometimes he makes rude comments to peopl just to get a laugh from the class
Awesome guy, great conversations in class, covers the material very well, he really knows what he's talking about, he doesn't just teach straight out of the book, definately try to get into his class

hands down the smartest person ive ever met in my entire life. his class is definitely hard but it will no doubt change your perspectives on the world. i changed from a business to a philosophy major after taking his intro course.

Hoaglin took over my class for half a semester, but from what i observed he was a pretty cool guy. Definately knows about justice...
Hoaglin's class is one of the best one's I've taken so far...I think him being a hardcore X Hell's Angel has something to do with it...or something...Class Discussions are the best, and he explains. Phil very well. Good teacher recommended
Does a great job of explaining the material. He is also pretty respectful to your existing beliefs, tries not to affend. I do think females have an upper hand of getting a better grade in his class.
He's totally passionate about what he does. Great discussions. Tests are kinda hard, but the class is worth it.
I took his class last year, and he definately helped me see the world in a different light. I'd highly recommend him. Hard, but oh so good.
So smart. He made me think aout the world within and without myslef. I now have a new perspective on life. His exams are difficult but he helps you to understand what you need to know. If you like Phil, get into his class!
One of the best teachers I've ever had. He's intelligent, engaging, funny, etc. He'll do whatever it takes to help you understand whatever it is that he's teaching. I also took PHIL 130 with him, and that class was much easier than the Intro course.
If you are young and female you will pass.
I took him for Logic, Ethics and Philosophy. He is really overrated and teaches more social political views then philosophy.
I found his lectures really scattered and hard to follow. He is very entertaining and always ends up talking about some socially relevant topic. Do not take this class if you are Republican, Religious, or close-minded. Hardest teacher I've ever had.
This is the best class i have ever taken! hoaglin is a great proffessor and i learned more in 16 weeks in his class than in 15 years of all my other education. if you like to think for yourself and have an open mind you will get so much from this class!
Wanna be, has been, king of the dorks! Read my lips, don't take any of this guy's classes!

Hoaglin is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He is passionate about his work and shares that with his students. He was recommened to me and I would recommend him to everyone! You need to have an open mind for his class, though.
Good teacher if you did the work. I disagreed with him on everything since i am a christian but he was willing to hear my argument. I enjoyed his class. Great teacher and person
A little scattered, but extremely entertaining. He is dreamy and easy to get lost in. Very knowledeable. Funny with his pirate puffy shirt and moto boots. Good teacher and would recommend to anyone who wants to learn and laugh.
passionate abt phil. which is good. makes it easier for [good/bad] students to do what they have to do cause its hard to slack off when ur teacher is so into the subject. not only will they fail, but its a lot like disrespecting the prof as a person......
Fun Teahcer. Knows his stuff. just give him the last 10min to go on a rant about world issues and his dislike for Geogre Bush. Easy class.
His class was an eye opening experience for me. Very cool teacher. The class is not very easy, but if you do your homework and read the book you will get an A. Take him, you won't regret it.
This guy is weird! He talks about nothing that has to do with anything and confuses the hell out of everyone when he talks about Philosophy. You believe what he believes, or he doesn't like you. He's pretty closed minded, and is a jerk. Try to take this class with someone else!
kind of a creep.
I am not sure how to put this... he likes people on the macro level, but not the micro. a little condescening and not very open, but decently thought out. great class discussions, if he actually calls on you. practically have to memorize the text. even those who read and participated did poorly.
Are you kidding me? This guy nice...let me tell you it you don't start of by getting on his good side don't even think about it. Expect it to be harder the more you question his "authority"!!!
If you love God or Country he will hate you(unless you look good in a skirt)Expect to memorize the text and give him slack even though he will not provide it to you!If you consider yourself to be a student looking to expand your mind and don't "mind" a bad grade go ahead try your luck and pateince!
this is the best class i have ever had. so good in fact, i am considering being poor for the rest of my life and going to school for 10 years so that i can be more like this professor. take this class, it will change your life, if you are open minded.
A LITTLE SCATTERED? The guy can't stay on one train of thought for 2 seconds. He basically talks in cirlces for the entire class; going from one tangent to the next. Makes his classroom a forum to achieve his political agenda by telling students what to think while claiming to be openminded. avoid!
Hoaglin would be a perfect professor if he was anywhere near an easy A. he is far from that, though, and he is not very personable at all. still, i would rather have no other philosophy prof. he is passionate about his subject, and really makes you think. an "A" would have been nice tho.
This is an excellent teacher. Some people can't handle him because he really is short tempered, and a little confrontational, but hes worth it. It was the best class I ever had. Just do the reading, he will never criticize you for what you say if you support it, and can defend it. very helpful/fair.
This teacher is very scattered when teaching and cannot stay on topic, at all. Don't count on him to help you, your on your own. This teacher knows the subject material forward and backwards, but he's not able to deliver it to his class. Don't take it, I ignored the other ratings before I took it.
Teachers like Mr. Hoaglin are so underappreciated. He really loves what he's doing, he's very intelligent, I wouldn't miss his class unless it was an emergency. If you're in school to learn, you'll love him
This class is by no means easy. But if you stick with it you'll get a lot out of it. If you don't do the reading you'll get on his bad side and do poorly in the class if you show him you want to learn he's willing to teach you.overall he was one of my favorite professors that I have ever taken. His cl

Probably the best teacher Grossmont has: if you're willing and capable of doing the work (not everyone is-he isn't for everyone.) NOT EASY, but his classes are the most worthwhile way to spend your time if you're in school to learn. If you can do well in his classes, you'll be prepared for anything.
This teacher BY HIS OWN ADMISSION grades arbitrarily if you annoy him... He can't follow a train of thought from point A to point B without a side trip to point Z... He is by far one of the worst teachers I have ever taken a class from, but he is pretty sure he is the greatest--just ask him!
make sure you show up to class. the work isn't all that difficult, you just need to do it. he usually gives study guides, so the tests aren't very difficult if you understand the material. he's kind of a hard ass, though.
This was a hard class for me. He encoraged me to hang in there and not drop the class, so that's what I did. I studied my you know what off for the final and I still got a D in the class. Now I can't transfer to Chico. Thanks Hoaglin! You're the best! Pshhh
You're doing a great job Hoaglin. Don't let comments from these people bother you. They either aren't smart enough to get the material or they didn't put forth the effort. I enjoyed the material and got an A. Great class.
a mean man with a chip on his shoulder
if you are very liberal and hate americans take this teacher. he took whole classes bashing our way of life and praising himself. he will annoy you and not stick to any sort of plan. horrible class
Hey Hoaglin: learn to keep one train of thought for more than 2 seconds. Absolutely the most scattered lecturer I have ever heard. Arrogant, pompous, and his own number-one-fan. Completely subjective grader. His only saving grace is that he is passionate about his subject and knows it well. He's a philosopher and a thinker, not an educator.
Hoaglin was awesome. The class was a little tricky for some, but that was just the material. He was more than willing to help anyone who needed it. The most important thing is to definitely read the material.
Good stuff.
If you pay attention and do the homework you will have a great time in this class. As a Christian i disagreed with him but he was open to my opinions. Class act.

I loved the class. You truly need to be commited to doing the homework and showing up! I easily got his humor...some people don't. If you want staight up, undiluted education that is slightly off the beaten path...he's your guy. If you're a slacker, stay h
Great teacher, if you want to learn and not just get an easy grade. He isn't for everyone like stupid people so if your not up to the challenge don't take this professor. Keep up the good work sir.

dude is a real smart guy, but deff has his issues with society. possibly affecting his effectivness as a teacher but doubtful. perhaps a bit harsh on a one on one conversation, and even in class a bit much. if anything some might say a bit intimadating; tr
I have a keen interest in Philosophy, and so I enjoyed the class and most of his lectures, but I honestly think that he should reconsider subbing in as an intro. phil. teacher in the future. I love a challenge, and he IS challengeing. The only complaints that I have are that he was a little too hard core for students just taking an intro. course. Also, he seemed to single certain students out for whatever reasons-maliciously insulting them in front of the class- surprised at his lack of professionalism.
Everyone who says he thinks too highly of himself obviously doesn't listen to his lectures and doesn't know how to think for themselves. It is much easier to hate a man as intelligent as he is than it is to listen his opinions and learn from his ideas. Too many people at Grossmont are too simple to understand critical thinking.
Hoaglin is an awesome professor. People who think he's a jerk or full of himself obviously didn't give him a chance. He's sometimes a little negative about society but come on, it's philosophy. You seriously think about our society and see how you end up feeling. Totally take him. Ethics, Logic, anything. He's really good and will make you think.
Whether he thinks 'too highly' of himself or not is not the point. Mr. Hoaglin is the best professor I've ever had. His classes, and especially his exams, are the best preparation you're going to find for more advanced classes at the University level. He presents a reasonable challenge, and good students will become better students by meeting it.
I read a review before taking this class, it said Hoaglin is "arrogant, pompous, and his own number one fan" What this student wrote could not be more correct. Hoaglin is full of himself as people describe. He is the most arrogant professor I have ever met. You will hate phil. by the time you are doine with this class, steer clear at all cost
I really enjoy his lectures yet he grades the exams very subjectively. I have learned alot in his class, however I do think that his grading method is a bit biased.
Professor was not organized and did not prepare a syllabus which is our path to success. Not clear about what he expected from students and changed his mind frequently about what was going to be assigned. Late returning assignments. Tests were not well written. Lectures were interesting when he took the time to prepare the topic.
He Is A Trip. Funny, Arrogant; Flaming Liberal Yes. Bit Disorganized & My Conservative Views Took A Lot Of Slack From Him But Nothing I Couldn’t Handle. Clarify How To Answer Test Questions Before Quiz And Participate In Class. Besides That A Really Good Professor, Would Take Again Just To Stress Him Out… I’m Just A Masochist I Guess ;) …
Very interesting class. The Professor really knows what he's talking about. He kept the class interesting with his stories and pasion for Philosophy. I learned much more than I thought I was going to learn. I would take one of his classes again.
Basically he is not going to hold your hand and can be harsh. Do the reading, attend and try not to annoy him. KNOW the material for the test, it will NOT be a matter of matching obvious answers, it will be semi-complex qoutes and the core concepts covered in class. If you are Rep or Christian don't bring it up, if female with assets use them.
Pretty good delivery. Gets class involved and tries to understand their points of view. Works hard to get his point across. Sometimes lets his POV get in the way of fair-minded teaching. Very knowledgeable.
Took his classical mind and ethics. Great teacher, if a bit disorganized. He'll grill you for your beliefs, but it's usually done for humor. Definitely made me think about philosophy. Arrogant, but in a amiable away. I recommend him to any student open to some hard work, thinking, and a bit of offensive humor at your expense.
make u work for your grade
Disorganised, biased, not open-minded - that's Bill Hoaglin. I don't like being negative so here's the positive side: If you are a young, beautiful female - take this class. You will get an easy A and not have to work too hard for it.
Hoaglin is one of the few instructors who believes that if you do average work you should get an average grade. He only gave essay tests and in order to get an A you had to prove that you read and thought in depth about the material. If you are afraid to meet a challenge or have your views questioned or be pushed academically then stay away.
I always learn something new in his class. Eventhough he comes off as abrasive in the beginning, he's a genuinely nice guy and a great teacher. Would not hesitate to take any of his class! He really pushes you to do well.
This was the best and most useful class I have taken in regards to everyday life.
Good professor. Rants a little but it is to be expected from a philosophy professor.
He was horrible! He is a very opinionated man and in the field of philosophy you have to be open and willing to teach your students with out being so biased. I suggests he picks u some more books and learns to become a scholar... if he doesnt like what he does he shouldnt be doing it! FIRST day of class he said he'd prefer to be an anthropologist !
The hardest grader on me yet, and I am so much better for it. I am now minoring in Philosophy just because of him and his Ethics class. Very hard grader, but work, think, discuss, and you can get an A. I did :). Go to his office hours, he likes to see people interested, he is very helpful IF you ask him. You will improve your writing. Take him.
GREAT CLASS! Yes, his class is a lot harder than most, but it's worth it. Be prepared to read the book and study a lot! He'll ask you how many hours you studied between classes and be prepared to discuss the material. If you don't understand, ask questions. Chances are other people have the same questions you do.
Horrible teacher. worstest! should read more philosophy books instead of repeating himself over and over and over again. avoid!
I had no problem with the class, but this professor was absolutely deplorable. He is ****, chauvinistic, and asinine. If you are a female be prepared to feel completely creeped out. Hoaglin relishes in student?s failure even though he vehemently denies it. Not enough space is provided to convey my loathing.
Spent a lot of time talking about how he could be doing a better job. Definitely true. He did seem to know a lot about Heidegger and could teach it a little, but he didn't seem to understand Wittgenstein. He thinks he is cool and tries to be friends with people in class, which got in the way. Was always too busy to help after class. The Worst EVER!
Funny to read these comments after taking his Intro & logic classes in 2001-2. He's the reason I changed my major to philosophy. Now I'm in a MA program at a ranked school and writing my thesis. He helped this happen. Sometimes he did seem a little unavailable. If you think his class is hard, just wait until you're at a 4 year institution!
A somewhat tough class, he rambles alot and doesn't prepare us very well for midterms, however the discussion in class is very enjoyable, hes a very smart man though very bull headed at times. All you have to do to get a passing grade is to read and study the material he asks, and you'll be good. But you must be committed! I learned ALOT.
Hoaglin is an intellectual. Take his class if you want to expand your mind. One downside is he won't philosophize with you during class, he mostly lectures.
Hard!
Hoglin,a great teacher--tries only to make his students think outside their bland conformity--and a huge brain, is pretty fair. Makes jokes, sometimes at peoples expense, but its all in good fun. Hoaglin will permanently alter your worldview. hard, but extremely rewarding. his tattoos and motorcyle boots are distracting ( :) ) but all in all, TAKE!
Didnt like him. Hated his class. Found the reading intersting, found him extremely rude. Had to leave class early for a family emergency and he called me out in front of the entire class and I left almost in tears. If you love philosophy sit in the front, its the only way I could pay attention to him.
He is the most passionate professor I've encountered and he puts in a much greater effort than any of the other profs I've had. But, as he is devoted to the subject and his job, he expects his students to reflect that devotion. He assigns more reading than most profs, but his lectures are incredible and insightful. Take his class!
Honestly, professor Hoaglin is an interesting individual. It made the class enjoyable, and I did learn a lot. If you ask me, this class was taught at University level, with the readings and the analytical homework questions and such.
Hoaglin is a great professor. He has a passion for philosophy and can get a bit flustered by close minded people. The work is hard but I learned a lot and will be taking his class again. The people who found it hard I noticed were the ones who did not do homework or read the book..
Hoaglin is awesome, really enjoyed his class, time flew by thinking deep. He challenges students to think and discuss the topics. He brings in his own personal experiences to the discussion, bringing a reality to philosophy. Sarcastic, witty, entertaining, he has a true passion for philosophy. Just do the homework and you got it.
Hoaglin is incredibly un-organized and should not be teaching at all. He constantly brings up irrelevant arguments and distracts the student from actually learning anything. He thinks he is better than everyone because he reads and can regurgitate material from Michael Sandel. He does not know how to think critically for himself. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Says he's a pragmatist but his approach to the classroom is Nietzschean, grappling with the material here, there, and everywhere. Disorganized and prone to tangents, the time often cuts him off. You must read the book, at least 2x. Exams are hard, five to eight essay questions. It's hard to get an A so take it P/NP and let yourself be entertained.
If you are interested in logic and want to spend hours studying it then this is a great class to take. if you are just taking it for the GE requirement to transfer I would NOT recommend it. Personally, I did not find it interesting, useful, easy, or a good use of my time. This class made put me to sleep every day.
he seems very angry and confused about the material. But he repeats the textbook a lot. parroty. i felt bad for him most of the time and thought he was iappropriate the rest of the time. not a good teacher. one of the angriest and meanest i have seen at grossmont and i have been there two years. sad old guy.
Worst class I've taken in college thus far. Not a good teacher, unreasonable standards. Taking him was a BIG mistake.
I think he's a cool guy and that he has a lot of respect for his students. Although he treats everyone fairly and expects people to pull their own weight, which I think is inspiring considering philosophy is a lot of about ethics and good ways of living.
This teacher is amazing!!! I absolutely loved him and it was my favorite class. He is very passionate about Philosophy and even takes classes on how to teach it better. This class was harder and we had a lot of homework, but he is very clear and helpful. He helps it "click" in students brains. I learned A LOT and still apply it to my life today. A+
I absolutely loved this teacher! He is very intelligent and brings in real world examples into what he's teaching from the book. He goes off topic a bit, but even the tangents we go on are interesting. This wasn't an easy class. I got an A, but studied the book a lot and did all the HW. Hoaglin may not be an easy A, but he is a great professor!!
I LOVED THIS CLASS!! Hoaglin is a beast :) I was always interested in the material and we had some hilarious discussions that made me want to continue coming to the class. There is a bit of homework and he does check once in a while. His tests are kind of difficult but not if you study all of the homework. OVERALL...GREAT TIME WITH HOAGLIN!
This man needs much social development. i can tell that he has had many problems in his life, and damage to his brain, to which i am sympathetic. however, he has no problem calling you out in front of the class especially if you are not athiest, a mentallity by which he is very tenacious and advasarial.
Listen, he's a good teacher. He's pasionate, and does go on a tangent sometimes but when it comes down to it he CARES about the youth and educating them. You have to do the readings, and understand them. Rarely does he collect homework but he will assign it, and he wants participation. HE WANTS YOU TO WANT TO BE IN HIS CLASS AND LEARN.
Overall pretty easy class. Hes a very interesting professor. I took this class for a GE, but he made me interested in the subject. Just study homework/notes with the the study guide and you'll do good.
Whoever said he needs "social development" is retarded. If you're interested in philosophy, take the class. Most people take it just to get generals done but it's not an easy A. At all. Read the book, take notes, STUDY. First test was kinda easy but the others got much harder. Nice teacher, kinda funny.
Disappointed in the class. Unlike most college classes where course objectives are clearly outlined, this class was aimed into the abyss. Instructor did not provide comprehensive updates on student progress which left me without a clear direction for improvement. Be sure to ask a previous student what will be on the exams.
There's a reason why he is no longer teaching Intro to Philosophy, His lectures jump from topic to topic and you cannot understand why is it relevent to the readings or even relevent to the class as he tends to bring up his own religious views and slams god repeatedly. He is byfar the worst intro teacher at grossmont. His exams are poorly worded.
If you put time and effort you will do well. He's willing to spend time with you after class. He's a tough teacher though, If your interested in the subject you will do well.
I took him for intro and logic. He is one of the most interesting men on the planet, he is funny, brilliant, passionate, but more than anything he is a mess (which is why i keep taking him). He is so disorganized it is ridiculous, but if you read with comprehension, there is a vast world of intellect and self reflection to be gained from his class.
He's not easy, but he makes sure that you learn the material. If you want an easy A, then he is not for you. But if you really want to learn, then take him.
this is one of my the most interesting and entertaining prof i have ever had in my life. awesome group discussions. alot of reading but he kept me interested the entire semester. one of the best teachers ever. PERIOD
His class is not laid back. He assigns reading weekly, typically with a page of homework. Tests require studying, mostly based on text. Notes mandatory. However, the lecture is what sells me. Hoaglin is knowledgeable, passionate and charismatic. Even off-topic, he is insightful and interesting. Highlight of my semester, and well worth the effort.
This class is not one to take lightly. Its tough, but it will prepare you really well for upper division course work. The Prof is really helpful and really cares about his students. lectures are a blast
One of my favorite professors of all times. He's very interesting and intelligent. The class is not hard, but it's not an easy A either. I recommend him if you're not a lazy student who doesn't appreciate the true meaning of education.
Totally loves teaching and cares deeply about the future of our generation. For that reason alone he is a rare and excellent professor. This guy will push you, he may even break you, but deep down he wants the best for you and wants to help you. Great professor. impressive character
Good teacher. Explains well and is funny, I enjoyed taking his class.
DO NOT, i repeat, DO NOT take this class. Unless you already know TONS about philosophy and just want someone to converse with about it, dont take this. YOU WILL LEARN ZIP. he is nice, funny and means well. by oh my, he is extremely unorganized and very bad at teaching. interesting guy but not what you want in a professor. seriously
Good teacher, hard but fair.Pay attention and participate in discussion, do the homework, and you'll be fine.Gives about a page of HW a week.Extreme leftist Dem, hates Capitalism, but doesn't ridicule or otherwise demean those of different opinion (which I almost constantly was to the majority of class).Overall, good class.
Fantastic Professor! Hoaglin is really passionate about what he teaches. I took his Ethics course in Spring 2011 and was always excited to come to class. Our discussions were the best I've had in any course. The material he assigns is interesting and challenging. Participate in his class is key. I would take him again if I could.
He is an awesome teahcer, Yes the material can be hard, but if you bring your questions to class or his office hours he help you out. He keeps the class from being boring and livens it up. I am taking his Logic class this semester, if you put in the hard work and effort you will receive a good grade. Definitely A Great Teacher!!!!!
Awesome teacher. Creates a great atmosphere that makes learning exciting. Enthusiastic. He makes sure everyone understands the material. Appropriately comical at times.
Professor Hoaglin is a freaking stud. He knows his stuff and he makes the content interesting. Remember, he has a saying that goes, "I hate academic laziness." In short, if you want to be at school he will deliver an academic experience with little lacking. Two thumbs way up.
If this is your first time taking Philosophy, do not take it with this guy. He gets off track, is never incorrect, always late, and gives zero feedback. If you raise your hand, he’ll make you feel like an idiot. Unless you are a “masochist,” as he says, take his class. He will help you hate Philosophy.
This was one of the only available classes for me to take unfortunately. The first week, he was hilarious before he got into his lectures. Soon after, he became annoying due to him always declaring his religious standpoints and going off on his random tangents. And his tests were ridiculously hard, I couldn't wait to drop this class! Don't take him
He is a very nice teacher but overall the class is extremely difficult!!!!! do not take if you JUST graduated highschool, no direction or clear instructions!!
I had previously taken an intro to philosophy class and was well aware of the 3 branches of philosophy. He was obsessed with one branch for the entire semester, and obsessed with one question, "What do you know?" I dropped the class before my entire semester was waisted. His lecture was mostly rants.
TAKE Hoaglin's ethics class UNLESS you are right out of high school AND you have no idea what a real college work ethic will eventually require of you. However this is great prep for that. Hoagy roll cares about us, the country, but can get frustrated when the class gets lazy. U get what U give from this guy. Learned tons, mostly about myself.
Hoaglin is difficult. He'll make you work for your grade. And you'll thank him for it, because you'll get more out of his classes than any other at this level.
Mr. Hoaglin is one of my favorite professors, ever. I would not recommend his ethics class if you are straight out of high school and are not used to a lot of reading and critical thinking. He lectures very well and always allows the class to participate, he likes hearing everyone's opinion. Thinking about majoring in philosophy thanks to him!
Hoaglin's class is difficult, but you learn a lot and it is very interesting. He goes very in depth into the reading topics and explains them as best he can. You must go to class, participate, and do the readings to do well. He is VERY Liberal and an Atheist, but quite open minded. Expect to work hard and get the grade you earn.
The book is a must. The readings are a must. If you fail at both of these, you won't get very far in his class. He is an amazing teacher, but this also shows in his tests, he will definitely work your mind. Respect him and he will respect you, he does not do well with rule brakers. Study the readings and questions from the readings.
This is one of the best teachers at Grossmont. This is difficult material, and his aim is to make you smarter for having learned it. He doesn't simply hand out A's, which is why is ratings are so low, but if you actually want to learn, he is the teacher to do it. He cares very much about his students education. I have taken all of his classes.
Amazing Professor. He's extremely passionate about philosophy and super helpful outside of class. He understands the course is hard and does his best to make sure everyone understands the material. Work hard, show up prepared, don't text in class and you'll do really well. Best Professor I've ever had and I started with no interest in Philosophy.
I took this teacher for logic. He even had difficulty getting through the class. He is very knowledgeable and wants every student to do well. This class is HARD if you want to do well see the tutors weekly!
OMG hands down, love this guy! His passion for the subject caught my attention. This isn't an easy class, but his lectures were interesting. You need to put in effort & actually DO work to get a good grade! Sleeping or texting in class won't get you anywhere. His lectures sparked my thought process!
I almost wanted to change my major to philosophy after taking his class! I put so much into this class and the material, I actually miss it. He is a fabulous professor! Best I've ever had, and his passion about philosophy is what kept me hooked! He's a cool cat, and pretty funny!
I took his philosophy class. Most say his class id difficult but it is not if you read the book every night and do all the hw. Didn't really pay attention and still managed to get an A. He is sometimes a bit confusing and goes on rants but he really is an approachable professor. He might seem intimidating but he's not. He hardly ever collects HW.
Great teacher very intelligent and informative. Incorporate a lot into his lectures. If you keep an open mind you can really learn a lot although I could see how someone with very strong set beliefs might not like some of the ideas or possibilities suggested in philosophy.
I took his philosophy class nearly 3years ago. I earned a D but to this day i am so appreciative of what i learned. I would do the reading at night, which is tough, but riveting info! if your a critical thinker you will hop outa bed to get to this class. Im gonna take it again too!
Don't take Logic unless you know what your in for. Not the best class to prepair you for anything except getting a major in philosophy or reading legal documents. Very confusing subject that the teacher even hates. Hoaglin is very egocentric and "knows" the world revolves around him. Not the best class or teacher.
He knew the material very well but was horrible at teaching it lectures and notes were very unorganized and he constantly talked about himself about being a chef and training martial arts under a okinawan master wasting class time, he never graded homework based on correctness instead on how long your answers were
I seriously loved Hoaglin. However, if you're lazy then you won't do well in this class. He expects you to do your work and to do it completely. There are assignments every night. If you don't do it, you will not succeed. It's difficult only if you do not try or if you fall behind. Ask questions. Don't expect anything handed to you.
I do not attend college to be insulted. Rude, unprofessional, disorganised. One of his lectures came from the back of an envelope. If you don't mind his complete disrespect for others, then be prepared to study the book. It's not impossible material, but you will need to study every night. He teaches to philosophy majors, not for GE requirements.
Amazing professor!! Main reason why ratings are low is due to the rigorous material. I certainly felt smarter coming out of his class each lecture. If you have an open mind you will find the lectures interesting.
Prof. Hoaglin is one of my favorite instructors! He is very knowledgeable in his subject and wants students to succeed. The material isn't easy, but if you take good class notes, manage your time, work hard, and complete the assigned homework you will do well. I have learned a lot from class and feel smarter just from the reading. Would take again!
Hoaglin is probably the best philosophy teacher ever. The material is difficult but he makes you like it through his lectures. He often goes on a tangent and it is your responsibility to tell him to get back on track. Also participation is a must, he get's a little upset when people don't do the homework or take part in discussion. Go to tutoring!
This review is really late since I took the class in the summer of 2010, but this shows how influential Professor Hoaglin was. I wish I can write more, but in short, take the class if you care about learning. It will shake your thinking and force you to open your mind and consider other perspective. Prof Hoaglin truly cares about his students.
Very passionate, but very disorganized. Spends more time on explaining his personal politics, than explaining the material. I appreciate his passion but if you're grading a teacher on their ability to convey the material in a coherent manner, Hoaglin fails.
Not a bad teacher! He's passionate, and gives you the benefit of the doubt. His class definitely will prepare you for Uni,so be ready. Everything depends on the book, so as long as you read and grasp the concepts AND YOU HAVE TO COME TO CLASS you'll get it. Participate! beware, he tends to get off topic; so you have to be the 1 to put him on track.
He's a hard professor, but you will definitely learn a lot. Can be intimidating but can def grow into it. Short paper after each reading, but does help you understand material in the long run.
He's a good professor who knows his stuff. This was a Critical thinking course so we didn't havea lot of opportunities to have class discussions, but when we did they got pretty interesting. Maybe in the future. Be ready to hear him give his liberal political views throughout the semester, its relentless. If you do believe in God, be prepared.
I tried so hard to like Hoaglin but I am now at the end of the semester and I still cannot say I liked this class. It is obvious Hoaglin did not originally intend to teach.. Extremely unorganized, almost 0 structure, and very distant. He has great ideologies, but major improvement must be made in his teaching skills. Best of luck!
Hoaglin is a good Professor overall. He expects a lot from his students, really pushes you to learn and succeed in the subject. Involves a lot of reading and participation is a MUST if you want to get an A. I recommended his class if you want to learn more than just key words memorization.
Effort is key in his class. He's forgiving, but specific in his grading. He has certain curves for each student it seems. His materials are interesting and I love that he includes readings not only from the Western perspective. What I disliked the most about his class is his disorganization with homework and lectures; often blaming his insomnia.
Professor Hoaglin hates many things, and is very disorganized. He cuts no slack to any opponent, and expects dogmatic following to whatever he claims. Beware this class, for it is more a challenge to one's patients, than ones intellect.
The reading is essential. He gives good explanations, but you may have to fish to get them.
Hoaglin is a great Logic teacher. Logic is hard, not him. Think you're already Logical? then you have no clue what this class is. It's arguments made into mathematic equations with Symbols instead of numbers. If you want to argue in a civilized world, take this class and take Hoaglin.
Excellent instructor. He could spend more time on instruction and less on going over the homework, it would be best if he chose problems to review. He does choose excellent tutors, don't be afraid to use them if you struggle. Don't wait on tutoring if you may need it. The material is difficult and there is only so much he can cover in class.
Professor Hoaglin obviously cares about his students. Expect a lot of homework, but it is definitely needed in order to understand the material. This is a tough class, but logic is arguably fairly difficult by nature. Hoaglin's persistence and care helps make the class a little easier, and you are guaranteed to learn a lot if you stick with it.
Complete Socialist and Athiest-- Expressed this every class! The Christian / Republican will be annoyed by his comments & have trouble dealing with the homework because several ???'s are going against your Christian beliefs in order to get the answer graded correctly by him. Homework was indirect on deadline. No help from him outside of class.
Mr Hoaglin taught one of the hardest classes I have ever taken, but it was also one of the best! The amount of material you go over is immense, but it is all worth it. You will cover several schools of thought an be ready to take on so much more through it. I've transferred to a 4 year and now all of my political/ethics related classes are a breez
In order to pass the tests, you have to read the text book and attend class and pay attention! This class requires a lot of effort, but if you put in the work, it's not that hard.
He's kinda tough to listen to, and he can go all over the place sometimes, but it comes with the job of trying to get you to think deeply about things. He's got a lot of good points and his classes will open your mind. Lot of stuff to read, but it's necessary in order to even understand what is going on. Definitely one of my favorite professors!
He's passionate about what he's teaching and it shows. He doesn't just lecture for the entire class, he encourages class discussion and debate and is genuinely interested in helping his students learn. But he's very honest and he's a critical thinker so some of the things he says offend people who can't look at their own beliefs objectively. 10/10
Hoaglin's teachings influence self reevaluation and an open minded approach to what we may not fully understand. His ambition to get you to think is one of the strongest qualities I've seen a teacher possess; however, his assessment and day to day deadline of homework deters my personal determination to learn. He also tends to go on tangents.
Hoaglin's a really great guy, honestly. His classes are discussion based, and he tends to take it rather personally when you don't show up to class (If you're going to miss, let him know). The amount of effort you put in directly corresponds with what your grade will look like. He's also not too hard on due dates.
Get ready for the lectures about how he used to be an alcoholic, but not anymore because he found karate and motorcycles. Also be ready for him to flirt (rather openly) with the attractive female students in the class. He was more concerned with appearing attractive than he was with appearing professional. At times the lectures were thoughtful.
This was one of the first classes i took after moving to america. I found he rambled about being an alcoholic a lot but still gave out difficult assigntments. Didn't help me much and flirted with my sister.
When i first walked into class my first thought was, "Awesome! Jeff Bridges is my teacher!" As I began to learn from Hoaglin, I learned that Jeff Bridges is a serious liberal atheist. I had fun in the class but I knew not to get offended. Hoaglin has lectures that are more like rants so if you really wanna learn the content, read the book.
This is the most dogmatic teacher I have ever gotten. If you are an atheist and a liberal it will be A LOT easier to sit through his lectures. And even if you are, you might still get annoyed at his pervasive pessimism and grouchy attitude. At many times his political ramblings really did get in the way of what he was trying to teach.
Go to class, do the homework, study for tests... Easy A. Hoaglin is funny and encourages class participation. I got to know my classmates and we had funny, interesting debates. Didn't find his tests to be hard at all, but I know some classmates that did. He gives study guides that tell you exactly what will be on the exam. Learned a lot. Take him.
As long as you find the time to do the reading you'll be fine. He bases the exams on the homework questions. He requires in depth answers for homework. He makes you think critically which is refreshing. He brings up very controversial topics so if you're easily offended don't take this class. His lectures are entertaining but attendance is required
If you're a lazy student right out of high school who expects everything to be handed to them then don't take this class. This was my first philosophy class and I actually learned a lot from Professor Hoaglin. He gives out a lot of in depth homework questions but if you take them seriously and do well on them you'll get good grades on the tests.
I will not take anything this guy teaches. One time is enough.
The first weeks of the semester with Bill lead you to believe youll have a good class experience but when you hit the near halfway mark he becomes extremely condescending, somewhat rude, and bias towards his favorite students. He also has an hidden agenda where he tries to force his ideology and political opinion into your learning Dont recommend
This teacher is well informed and you can tell that he really cares for the world although he goes on understandable rants. Bill is a strict teacher for a great reason, he still has a-lot of enthusiasm while teaching and wants to make sure that his students are LEARNING. Hardest class I've taken yet, but also the most rewarding, so far....
Have had him for two classes now, Hoaglin is not your typical teacher. In his class you will for sure learn so much about philosophy and change your way of thinking. He can be somewhat hard depending on how focused you are. You can't be skipping class, lectures are long but worth it.
Hoaglin is my favorite professor outside of the Arts department. +Tags: Respected,Lots of HW,Hilarious,Caring There is quite a bit of homework, but it's doable if you work away at it and read the chapters on time He doesn't put up with students trying to BS and will call you on it for sure Show up to class and put in effort and you will do well
Hoaglin is the type of professor who enjoys intimidating students for some reason. He flat stops lecturing to call out a person whenever they would get up to go to the bathroom. Most lectures had nothing to do with material on the tests. Luckily the class is fairly easy. Homework is worth as much as the tests and the tests are just HW questions.
Do not take this class if you plan on skipping class/homeworks. He will call you out every class if you do so. He tends to go off topic, A LOT. And he will get to the important information 5 minutes before class ends and will keep you late. He grades off length, so do not plan on doing an assignment that is less than a page long.
One of the best ever. So sad hes retiring. Would have definitely taken more of his classes.
For one of my first college classes ever, Hoaglin was awesome! His ethics class was definitely difficult, but I got a great experience and improved valuable skills such as explaining abstract ideas critically and clearly. Will definitely miss this class a lot. I hope to take more of his classes if he comes back from retirement to teach part-time!
This teacher was VERY rude and condescending to pretty much everyone. You literally could not go to the restroom without him stopping class and going on a rant about how we have no respect and thats what before and after class is for. If you so much as yawn once hell stop lecture to embarrass you. Very inappropriate comments to mostly females.
VERY strict! He's also one of those people that you love or hate. I personally enjoyed his class. He's very passionate in his lectures and loves to hear discussion from students who come out confidently. Yes, he calls you out if you seem uninterested. It's probably because he puts his all in his lectures. He's honest and you cannot be sensitive.
I hate this class, I'm taking it online and he is so unorganized, he seriously has no idea how to even work Canvas. He is ALWAYS angry, even when he's talking, he sounds angry. I write over 1,000 words per 5 point assignment and he says ITS NOT ENOUGH LIKE WHAT HAHA. that's due 2 times a week plus a discussion plus a quiz, fr don't take this class.
He is a very opinionated person and does not hesitate to speak his mind. He is very passionate about philosophy and I learned a lot from his class. You have to read and do discussion posts as well as quizzes. He expects a lot in the discussion posts but solely because he wants to know you understand the material. I enjoyed his class.
I really enjoyed Prof. Hoaglin's class. The textbook was a really interesting read and the class discussions and papers were helpful in better understanding the material. It is a lot of reading and writing, but overall very thought-provoking. I definitely gained a better understanding of Ethics and how to look at the world around us.
Cool guy but doesn't know how to run an online class. He stated that this is his first online class, which is very disingenuous considering there are ~3 years of reviews for his online classes. Its an excuse for disorganization. I took an 8 week course with a chapter reading, discussion, and test due each weekday, too much work for a 3 unit class.
Passionate professor with high expectations. Challenging but rewarding class - read the textbook, engage in discussions, and use unstuckstudy AI for helpful study prep. Organized online section could use some improvement.
