Mr. Kerney is very knowledgeable in the subject matter he teaches. He really challenges the students to learn computer science. This class was not meant to be easy. Mr. Kerney expects a lot out of the students. #buriedskeleton
Best CSCI 41 teacher on campus! Laid back. Very approachable.
If you want to work in the tech field, then you want to take his class. Mr Kerney is very knowledgeable and will always stay as late as he can to help out anyone who needs it. The assignments can be challenging, but if you want to be a real programmer, you're gonna have to start sometime. We even did an upper division assignment, it was hard.
Best computer science teacher in campus. He is very helpful when it comes to helping his students and often gives extra credit. Assignments get progressively harder as the semester goes by, but if you pay attention to his lectures and do some reading on your own, it should be a piece of cake. 1010 would take again. #imaginaryhomewok
This Dank Meme King is a great Computer Science Teacher. Could not recommend anymore. He is King Kerney!
He's a great teacher, willing to help. CSCI26 is a hard class and you need to study. However, he is very gracious with deadlines, and is reasonable.
Mr. Kerney is, by far, one of my favorite professors. I took CSCI40 with another instructor previous to this course and I will definitely say that Kerney explained the material so much better and also aims to combine humor into his lectures to keep his students intrigued. If you're new to CSCI, I definitely recommend him!!
Mr. Kerney teaches because he wants you to learn and love computer science. He's a very experienced and skilled programmer and knows how to teach. He challenges his students and give grace when they fail. I would strongly advise anyone to take any of his classes.
Kerney is possibly the best teacher I've ever had. He is incredibly knowledgeable about Comp Sci and he's one of the only Comp Sci teachers I've had who can actually explain the material and makes sure students know it. He is incredibly helpful and will spend time after class to help you. He's also hilarious. If you're new to programming, take him.
A great teacher. Is sure to make things fun, interesting, relatable, and one can always expect a challenge: to learn a lot from those challenges. Already miss his class. Yo dawg, I heard you like good role models. So I rolled up this model, so you can roll the model while you roll with the role model while you role model after this role model.
Best teacher!
He is a good teacher when he teaches. He should spend more time actually teaching though. He would spend a large majority of the class just talking to the students and then he would squeeze the lecture into the last 30 mins of class and then just send out an assignment on the material he just breezed on by. I don't believe people learn like that.
Explains a little which is clear, then gives the hardest assignments.... which r everything but clear..... struggled through the whole semester,... tutoring center was a refuge
I kind of wish i could just take him for all my csci classes up to a bachelors degree. I recommend taking all the com sci classes that clovis offers with him. He does go on tangents but they were good tangents about professional skills. Im an electrical engineering major btw. I wasn't all that interested in csci until his classes.
26 has tough subject matter. Kerney does a great job conveying these complex ideas. He gives many programming assignments that make you use what he teaches you in his lectures. 26 is probably the most useful CSCI course I've had so far. You'll learn lots of practical applications from Kerney in this class. Highly recommended.
The topics of 41 might sound useless, but if you take this class with Kerney, you will come out knowing how to use the concepts you learned in the real-world. I came out of this class a much better programmer. His assignments are fun and help you understand the subject matter intimately. Lots of extra credit opportunity. Highly recommended.
Of all of the gentleman scholars, the memes graced us with him. Blessed by Harambe, anointed by John Cena, acknowledged by RMS, Mr. William Kerney is the best CSCI professor at Clovis Community College. Mah programmin' skillz will be like a tiger defying the laws of gravity! Main dot cc will be passing the test cases like Lady Godiva!
He's Hot and the best Computer Science teacher you will ever have.
Mr. Kerney was a great introductory to my computer science career. He personifies the compiler to make it easy to understand, but also doesn't negate the hard details and specifics. He is a great teacher, and will always be an excellent mentor.
Always has great stories about being in the industry. Very fair grader. A lot of fun.
Mr. Kerney is very knowledgable on this subject and tries to make the experience of taking his class similar to having a career in computer science. Only problem with that is that lectures are short and weekly partner assignments are difficult, especially if you don't have any experience in CSCI. Midterms are fair and class is passable with effort
Mr. Kerney is one of my top favorite professors I've ever had!! He is super funny, makes CSCI so interesting, his coding projects are challenging but fun, and his tests are extremely fair. Just make sure you're always caught up with what's going on in class and you should do fine no problem. Kerney is very willing to help you with code so just ask!
Great Teacher. Goes off topic but when he does its about things related to CS like starting a business and what not. Very funny. He reminds me of someone who would be taking the class with me and not the teacher. Love the guy.
Class structure as follows: c++ two partner projects and online zybook coding homework due weekly. Projects vary from simple calculators to mandarin translators to battleship. Zybooks homework is very easy to do but can be difficult when facing challenge activities. Grading criteria is test cases made by the big Chief himself in the csci4x server.
Believes lecture is something that can be done in 10 minutes or less and spends most of his time not doing it. Gives incredibly hard assignments that are due in a week and tells you to watch tutorials to learn the material. Isn't that supposed to be what lecture time is for? The material is interesting, but we have no resources other than the web.
Graded all of our assignments through an online grader, you get credit for how many test cases you pass. Does not teach actual code syntax but more on the theory side, which might be interesting in "theory" but doesn't help on tough assignments. Learned more on stack overflow (which wasn't much because you need a good foundation) than from him.
I've taken Kerney for CSCI 41/26/45. If you really work through all of your assignments and don't just copy your friends' code for everything you will do fine on the tests. He offers extra credit points. Grades fairly. Lectures are always interesting. If you aren't familiar with Linux/CLI you will be by the time you're done with the CSCI series.
Great teacher
One of the best professors I've ever had. Brings real-world experience to his lessons and prepares you for employment. Of course the class is difficult - the subject is difficult - but he breaks the topics down well and provides every opportunity to pass.
Cannot explain in words how amazing of a teacher you will have if you take Professor Kerney for any Comp Sci class. Prepares you for the real world and real job environments all while maintaining a very relaxed relationship with students. Amazing teacher, one of if not the best in the central valley. Even if you aren't comp sci, consider the class.
I wish there were more professors as passionate, and personable, as is Mr. Kerney about computer science. Throughout the semester, we built projects using Raspberry Pis, which was a great learning experience. Aside from this, he would periodically give us career advice.
He was a good professor in that he made a great effort to connect with the class, whether it be with his sense of humor or the stories he told. He also has plenty of previous coding experience, so he does know his stuff. Just beware that you do need to really focus on the material that is strictly being taught, because he can get carried away.
Kerney is a great professes for CSCI, He don't give lot of homework, also he offer lot of easy extra credit.
Honestly one of the best classes I have ever taken both in terms of having a great time and learning. Kerney truly is brilliant at coding and has hilarious stories from his college years showing his passion for it. He has plenty of extra credit opportunities and never has unfair questions on the test and is extremely understanding for assignments.
Willing to help if you ask. Gives plenty of extra credit opportunities. Really funny
You can tell he loves his students and he really knows his stuff.
Mr. Bill "Master Tier" Kerney is the best professor I've ever had. He knows da wae of CSCI inside and out and brings industry experience into lectures. Offers many EX credit opps and teaches practical skills. Those looserds who wrote bad reviews were sent by jealous Fresno City professors. Don't de-reference NULL pointers, and you'll be fine.
You want to be successful. Take this guy. He teaches so many real practical stuff. And he's the coolest person you'll ever meet.
Great professor, very generous with extra credit, which is a good thing because his projects are not easy. Do-able but tough.
If you need to take a computer science class, whether it be for a major in said field or transfer credits for another major, Kerney is the man you should go to. He makes learning the subject easy and fun.
I had him for all the CSCI classes(from 40 till 45), and I got an A for all of them and for all of his classes but 40(b/c I already knew most of the concepts by self-teaching) I had to work for my grade. Doing assignments was a must & be sure to have your own set of notes b/c he had tangents that went away from the powerpoints.
He's really a great teacher. His assignments are focused on ensuring you know the taught material. When it comes to class time, he has great stories, will always explain how things work if you ask, and gives extra credit for attending events that benefit you outside of class.
Kerney is a funny and charismatic dude, but he has trouble staying on topic. He often gets distracted and tells a story in the middle of a lecture on a complicated topic, or starts teaching about something unrelated to the class. He teaches decently when he's focused, but his "focus days" are hit-and-miss. Amazing guy, but "meh" teacher.
I took Kerney for both 40 and 41 for fun and have decided to continue CSCI with him because his classes are so enjoyable. He does get off-topic in lecture but most of the time, the topic is educational about other areas of life. Definitely do the programming assignments, that is how I really learned. Kerney is a fantastic person, I look up to him!
He's great, I got my A without having to stress too much. I was allowed to focused on other classes and I still learned a ton. He's flexible and incredibly knowledgable. Great at answering questions. He's the best choice for CSCI in Fresno.
Kerney is the best professor on campus imo! He is so passionate about teaching. He does it for FUN so he really cares about students! He is so inspirational! This is the fourth class I take with him. Doing the worksheets really taught me the concepts. The midterms aren't hard, based off lecture and the worksheets.26 is the easiest CSCI class so far
I would not take another CSCI class with any other professor unless I had to. Aside from helping students master programming, Professor Kerney enjoys teaching students extra projects on the side like the uses of lolcat. Because of his awesomeness, some of students have elected to call him "Big Cheif." Would highly recommend. Clap often. Beat 48.
Cool guy, lazy prof. Wish he spent more of his time teaching/reinforcing material. His assignments/syllabus had a couple inaccurate dates/wrong details, doesn't bother to change. Most of the assignments are graded by your peers or are done automatically, so there's no feedback. Assignments have vague instructions. Gives extra credit, which is nice.
take him ihe w23e
Big Chief has done it again. Great class to make friends and influence people. All projects and Arm32. Grifflepuff is the house you want to be in. Dance offs for an A might be required. The current record is $1200 spent on a project. Try and beat it. Good luck have fun clap often. 10.0/0 would take again.
Took Big Chief for 2 classes this semister. Hands down best professor ever. Bridges alignments were hands down the best assignments the whole semister. Must request that you do them. For group projects farkle or poker are wise choices. 5 claps all around. The things you should walk away knowing is how to clap and show your palms. SLL #1 BEST.
If you want to do well, don't miss a class. Homework consists of Zybooks (reading and challenges) and difficult programming assignments. Daily quizzes (counted for attendance, graded by effort). Test every 6 weeks. Tutors are available if you struggle with a concept or assignment. Gives great advice and feedback on computer programming, caring.
Kerney is the best!! His classes are the most fun and laid back. CSCI 45 is definitely difficult. The group projects are very time-consuming but we had a blast and learned so much when doing them. Just know that the people on your row the first day are you groupmates the rest of the semester. Enjoy the class and dream big! (We created Whacka Porg)
Showing up and participating is crucial to learning and getting what you need done for the class. There's lots of hw but lots of class time to ask for help from student aides or professor. Everyone is approachable and very down to earth and understanding. Out of all the professors Kerney's outlook on being reasonable outweighs any negative
Actually cares about his job and gives students tons of resources and a server to access work anywhere with a connection, not strict on formating of code, doesn't slow down and take a baby pace to computer science either, you're doing really cool stuff by the middle of the semester and everything is taught at a great pace.
Professor Kerney is easily the best professor Ive ever had. If youre a CS major his classes will give you better base in CS than any school will give you. From CSCI 1 to 45 the class environment is super friendly Make the most you can out of his classes. Kerney easily the best CS resource you're going to encounter in your schooling. Dont waste it
Kerney is a great teacher and a really funny guy. He relies on your skill to help and will try and help you solve a problem rather than giving you the answer which I prefer. While some projects are difficult, if you need help he offers a lot of time during the class and afterward to help struggling students. Makes some funny and some cringy memes
I just finished the 2-year course for computer science with him, and it was honestly some of the most fun I had in a classroom. If you can fit his classes into your schedule, it's worth the time. Because while he still a first and for most a professor, you become friends with him over time.
Kerney is an amazing professor. His quarks are easily overlooked for a professor that practices what he teaches. Pros include: assignment grader before submission extra credit opportunities (workshops & above and beyond hwk) unique & relevant programming assignments Negatives can be vague on assignments or some details input can lacking
The extra credit lectures were so unique and fun to attend! I won't ruin the surprises but I was entertained the entire time and I got extra credit for it. If you miss certain lectures you can watch them. He records and posts on YT. This makes life easy. If you don't watch at all you won't know what to do though. Relaxed, easy going, and fair.
Kerney is the best, He runs a discord server. Answers DM's and is genuinely a good person. He grade very fairly. He is the best Comp sci teacher in the district. The mod project is one of the best project I have ever done.
Great Professor. Recorded Lectures
Bill Kearny is an incredible professor. During this fall semester of 2021, he has helped me learn the basics of game design. Since I am a Web Developer, I was not enthusiastic about learning this and have struggled quite a bit to learn Unreal Engine. I believe he is the only instructor who could have helped me as much as he has. Also answers DMs.
bill is best and has genuinely good lectures (I watch them in the background sometimes) and he's genuinely fun to talk to. He the best Computer science teacher in the district, most if not all the negative reviews are done by butthurt students, who will end up working in a dead end web development job. Programming assignments are resume worthy.
Bill's teaching/classes carried me through my upper division courses at CSUMB. I took all his classes: 40, 41, 26, and 45. He is genuinely the best teacher you will ever have. Anyone complaining about him have smol brain. If you are struggling with assignments, ASK FOR HELP. Most fun I have had in college. And he was a good friend.
He is hands down the best professor in the district for computer science. I drove from Reedley Every Tuesday and Thursday at 7AM in the morning to go to his lectures. I would do it again. Am still in discord server if you want to chat, am that one tutor who talks about fumos. you cannot go wrong with bill, he will make you a better programmer.
Kerney was a wonderful professor. One of the few teachers with whom I can genuinely say I enjoyed being in class. He's very knowledgeable about computer science, and it's always a good time in the classroom. Going through the computer science pathway with him was a blast. As long as you follow along and put in the effort, you should be golden.
His lectures are bland.
i love the class! the lectures where infact not bland. great teacher too very funny! 10/10, would take again.
He definitely knows his stuff when it comes to coding and programming. On the other hand his lectures lack significantly when it comes to actually teaching fundamentals on coding. If you are not already proficient in C++ or have some amount of programming experience under your belt, then the struggle will be real.
Kerney is definitely the most difficult teacher at Clovis, but he's the best. His lectures are amazing and he constantly drills in material used in the field. I have learned more in this one class then my entire time taking 40 and 41 at Fresno City. Take this king! Do not got to Fresno City for csci it sucks.
Great teacher that gives plenty of extra credit opportunities along with posting his lectures on Youtube. Homework can be time consuming so manage it. He gives competency exams where you have multiple attempts. Make sure you have a good understanding of CSCI 40 material.
Tons of homework. Occasionally more than 20 hours a week, but usually more like 6 hours. Labs sometimes felt like busywork. Group projects were ok but you get stuck with the same people the whole semester. Absolutely everything was a competition; it gave the whole class a hostile vibe, like your classmates were your enemy. Maybe that's just me tho.
Best professor ever. Wish I could take him forever. He invented a cure for cancer
Kerney is a great professor. His class is unlike any other. He is EXTREMELY fair. He pushes u hard, but gives u so many chances. Be prepared for work - rewarding work. Look elsewhere for a lazy-easy A. Take him if you want to become a good programmer and want to succeed. Great guy. Widely respected. Thank you Mr. Kerney!
I would definitely recommend this course. If you have no programming experience, it will be a little harder for you but Kerney and the tutors offer lots of help. The lectures are pretty entertaining and interesting and never boring. The main assignments can be tricky at times, but I found them fun. There is also a lot of extra credit opportunities.
Lots of homework, but how else are you gonna learn? Lectures are typically rather short, and there are plenty of hands on coding assignments. He is very helpful at diagnosing problems in the your code, and he also has great tutors/CSCI-40 alumni in the classroom/TC. Plenty of extra credit opportunity. You will probably struggle, but push through.
Very passive aggressive, is consistently off topic, doesn't offer any help on hw or assignments, says i can't "give you the answers", even though its not a test its an assignment. Disorganized, for csci45 the circuits are everywhere, unorganized, half are broken or missing, then gives you a bad grade because resources arent available that should be
his homework is extremely difficult for the lectures and topics he covers, expects you to go to tutoring but they give you vague responses. is very unforgiving on missing assignments, as he does not allow any missing work to be completed. his lectures are okay. overall i would not recommend this professor for CSI41,he is too tough on his students
I found the lectures to be really informative. They're available beforehand. There were many online quizzes for a grade. Starts slow, picks up later, fair workload. Many opportunities for extra credit and makeup work. Reading and independent learning/experimentation is essential, especially for assembly topics (learning from your mistakes etc).
Kerney is a fantastic teacher, and I really enjoy his classes! It's clear how passionate he is, and how much he cares for his students. I took this class over the summer, so I was there every weekday. It's a lot of time, but the assignments were mostly participation and two final projects.
You're much better off with Lawton for your CSCI classes
10/10. You should take any classes you can with him.
The professor does lecture well, however your focus can be deterred by random remarks and tangents he often makes. Missing a class is detrimental since you'll most likely miss a crucial learning point needed to complete the current and future assignments. Teacher uses Putty for assignments and Discord for communication. The final is a group project
This class is what you make of it, Kerney offers very clear guidelines on how to succeed and if you're willing to put in the work you'll be fine. Kerney's extremely knowledgeable about just about anything you want to ask him, and as someone who came in with experience,I had a great time taking his class and picking his brain. I 100% recommend him!
By far my favorite professor in college. I actually changed majors from math to CS because of his way of teaching. He is very understanding and provides retakes for CEs and cares more about his students learning than failing them. Class is very doable with hard work and showing up to his lectures. He makes fun jokes and pretty niche references.
Tough but fair, in exchange for the challenge you will learn a great deal. One of the most interactive professors, I have talked to him at oddball hours on discord. Cares a great deal about you learning the material, Kerney could do many things that would make him way more money but he chooses to teach. Don't cheat, take another prof for an easy A.
