Puts all chapter notes on a powerpoint and the tests are based off of his powerpoints. Very easy class and extremely helpful when it comes to questions. I wish all professors were like this!

Professor McCarty is one of the NICEST professors at UIC, he is definitely one of my favorite teachers in my 3 years at UIC, he makes you feel like your questions and attendance is actually appreciated!

I agree, he is one of the nicest professors at UIC. And he is very respectful and crystal clear with the material. I wish I could take all my CLJ classes with him...

His teaching style was great. His notes were online, so that helped out A LOT. His exams are based off the power points, but there are also some points that you have to be in class to get on the exam. Overall good. I enjoyed the class very much.

Know the powerpoints front and back for an A. My friend and I didnt even have to buy the book! Material in general was pretty simple, go to class and pay attention. Going to class + 3-4 hours of studying the slides before the exam = A.

Probably the best professor I've had so far. Easy class, just pay attention in lecture and read the chapters and the 'A' will be yours.

Surprisingly, this class is easy.The professor is an awesome guy and handsome as well.Has powerpoint notes and puts them online before exams (which are easy if you study the notes and remember his examples in class)and his projects are not hard at all. I was not happy about taking this class at all, but I am glad I did. Pretty easy to get an A. He explains well, and uses powerpoints during lecture. He talks about Nebraska, and says folks a lot. I only read his powerpoints before a test (study for 3-4 hrs), and get an A. Make sure you go to lecture, it helps a lot!

Easy A! If you basically memorize the powerpoints you will get an A! 3 exams and a paper! He's a cool teacher...he says you guys and ok a lot and he blinks for a long time...it annoys you at first, but then you just stop paying attention to that

Powerpoints for lectures. Exams pretty much straight from the slides. If you don't get an A in this class, you should not be going to school. Proffessor is really nice but lectures sometimes get boring but still pretty interesting. Definetly would recommend the class and proffessor.

All you need to do is go to class to fill in the blank for the powerpoints,and study off them before the exam. His lectures aren't boring, and its only twice a week. 1 paper to write, which was pretty easy and that's basically it. Never bought the textbook.

So easy. fill in the blanks and look over the power points before tests and its an easy A (I got 100 on two of the test) Interesting subject even if he gets a little repetitive sometimes

McCarty is awesome! He has PowerPoint notes that you print to fill in the blanks and add your own side notes. You don?t need to buy the book; it?s a waste of money. Just study the slides and you?ll get straight A?s on all the tests. The paper was a short 4-page paper that was easy. Discussion sections are mandatory, but you typically get out early

Take him! You will actually learn something while enjoying and boosting your GPA at the same time. I had a family emergency and he was perfectly understanding and helpful!

McCarthy was soooo cool! I would take him again if it was possible. There were only 3 test and one paper. This class was fun as well :)

Prof. McCarty was a great teacher. He explained things very very well, and covered everything that one needed to know. Three tests (sort of challenging if you don't study well) and two papers. Do make sure to check you answers on tests when handed back, the TA made a few mistakes. Great teacher though, highly recommended!

Second time I had him and he's still as awesome as ever. Topic was Serial Killers and it's the best class to take with him. Class is never boring and he shows us clips to help us understand better. His explanations are always clear, simple, and as always he wears snazzy clothes haha. Great professor in every subject he teaches. Take him!

Great teacher! Very interesting lectures, although I didn't go to many because he was posting videos from the lectures on black board, so I just watched that! Tests can be tricky sometimes, but with min studying, I got a B. Doesn't take attendance. Recommend!

I have an A in the class, never bought the book, take moderate notes in the lecture and study by glancing over the notes. Easiest class ever and he is extremely hot. Kind of reminds me of Christian Bale. Also does interesting special topics in this course like death penalty and serial killers.

OK, basically you have to get A in this class as long as you study the notes for like 3 hours before the exam. I didn't do anything(since i took it as credit or no credit) and failed the first two midterm badly, but then i kinda study for the final exam and Aced it. And attendance in discussion sectioin counts 25%, so go to dicussion

This class is very simple. He posts the lectures online so you can watch them as if you were there. There are three tests and attendence to section is mandatory and a quarter of your grade. Tests are easy as long as you study your notes. Easy A.

He's a great teacher. Goes over all of the class material clearly and relates it to real life. Tells some stories of his past, relevant to the course. Also has lecture videos online so that was convenient whenever I missed lecture. Lecture is fun, though! And the class is moderately easy if you skim thru the book and attend lecture. Got an A!

He is a great teacher. You can tell he really enjoys what he does. He relates to his students very well and know alot about the topics he teaches. lecture isnt mandatory and he puts the lectures online and he doesnt require a book. hes hott too. definitely recommend taking him!

LOVED this class! If you need an easy gen-ed this is it! McCarty is easygoing and loves what he does. Tests are fairly simple, I never went to class and studied for a couple hours the night before and was fine. No textbook needed, so that was great! I would recommend this class to everyone.

ALL notes and lectures go on blackboard and he makes study guides and has review sessions. there is no text book and there is 1 short reading per unit!

He's really nice, and has interesting stories. Also he has an interesting way to facilitate note taking (he puts fill-in-the-blank notes of the unit up online, making you take notes to pass). Also the content is super easy! ALSO NO TEXTBOOKS

This class was awesome. I mean come on a class about serial killers, how cool! He was super nice and made getting an A really easy. Just do the readings and review the powerpoints before tests. Lecture isn't really mandatory to pass but he picks 5 random days to take attendance so it's worth it to just go. Awesome class

Great teacher 3 tests worth 25% of your grade then 25% is just to show up to discussion and participate. Memorize info on slides from powerpoints and go to discussion and you will do fine in the class

You can get an A. Everything on the test is exactly on the slides, with a few from the cases from the book. 3 exams(worth 25% each) and 25% for discussion grade. Make sure you go to discussion and turn in your assignments(if any) and you can definitely get an A!Don't slack off though. Emphasis:Study the lecture slides. And the plus: LECTURE CAPTURE

He is a nice professor but the class is not that easy. Since the 3 exams worth 25% each and the discussion also worth 25%, you can't do bad on the exams. If you are not a criminal justice major then its a little challenging on the tests.

Professor McCarty is a great guy. The class was super easy. Barely attended lectures; used lecture capture before exams. All you have to do is study an hour the night before the exam off his slides. I didn't bother buying the book; I looked up the readings online. TA was very helpful before final. Go to all your discussions.

Easy class. If your TA is DeWald, DO NOT TAKE HER. She is the only one who makes you do a research paper, quizzes, and homework.

Professor McCarty is awesome! He did not require a textbook for this class. He had online articles to read weekly according to lecture. He made his lectures interesting and really breaks everything done for you. definitely take him!!!

He is one of the best professors at UIC. He explains his content well and answers in depth any questions students have. His grading consist of three exams, they are fairly easy. I recommend taking his class even as an elective. You do learn a lot from hos lectures.

Very easy class! Interesting readings, interesting films. Definitely go to discussion and do everything you need to do there because it's 25% of the grade and you can only get grades from 3 exams. I actually wish he would've provided more opportunities for points. But it is an easy A. Don't just rely on slides, listen to him also for tests!

easy class. no paper, no project just three tests and a discussion section compose the grade so make sure you get that right. his ppts ale fill in the blank so you either way have to listen to his lecture or watch it online ( which is awesome that he has lecture capture). overall interesting class, whether an elective or requirement he's your guy!

Class topic was serial killers. One of the best professors at UIC. An 8-10 page paper (rough draft & final draft). 2 exams, pretty easy. Very straightforward. 5 random attendance days. Very nice guy. Would definitely recommend.

quite easy class. no textbook, just online reading, even though they can be quite long. exam questions are from lecture, so make sure you go, and the readings as well. overall, easy material. discussion is 1/4 of your grade so make sure you go. hes not too boring of a lecturer.

overall super easy class. No book required but the readings were pretty long. exams were pretty easy all multiple choice and a few true/false. he also uses lecture capture! 3 exams and then a grade from your discussion section (make sure you get a good TA)

Overall easy class, no book needed, his exams are right from the slides and the readings. He puts all of his lectures on echo center so you can just watch them at home and never go to class.

This is the second time I have him as a prof. He is the best prof. I've had in CLJ . He explains well, is there to help. The topic is very interesting. Sad he only teaches 2 classes, undergrad. 2 tests, easy. A 8-10 page paper, fairly easy. Good prof. I would highly recommend. Takes 5 random attendance days.

So lucky to have had him as a professor. He is very specific of how the class will go. Go to class, take notes, and study them. There are only 3 exams which are 75% of your grade, and the discussion which is 25%. Please attend discussion bc it will make or break your grade. Can get a little boring sometimes, but he's handsome so you'll pay attn.

Professor McCarty is the best professor at UIC. He is very passionate about what he does, and does an excellent job at explaining everything. I highly recommend him.

Never been to one class and I am getting an A. All lectures are on lecture capture. AND YOU MUST WATCH THEM TO PASS. Exam questions are straight from lecture and assigned weekly readings. Keep up with lectures and readings and this class will be super easy

Final grade is 25% Exam 1, 25% Exam 2, 25% Exam 3 and 25% discussion grade. Exams a really fair and easy, as far as you payed attention in class and did the readings. Don't have to put too much time into the class, easy gened.

The best professor you'll ever meet at UIC! There are exams placed through the semester but they are fairly easy, as long as you pay attention in lectures. As for his lectures they are not boring they actually keep you interested in the topics. Just go to class, take notes, and study. You'll get an A for sure. Very easy class! Highly Recommend!!

Make sure you read all the assigned readings. The exams have several questions on each one. The only reason I got a B was because I never read the readings... so just do the work and you're guaranteed an A.

I had Professor McCarty for CLJ 101 and he was awesome! All of the lectures were available on Lecture Capture. The readings he assigned were intriguing and relevant to the class. The exams were very easy and as long as you either go to class or watch the lectures, you should do very well in the class. Highly recommend!

Glad I took this class this semester. McCarty is an awesome professor. Extremely lenient and the exams are straight forward. There're readings you must read for each exams, but on his powerpoints, he displays the questions that must be found from the reading that will be on the exam on pp. Find the answers in the reading and you'll ace the exams

Professor McCarty is an awesome guy! He's super chill, his voice is soothing and he makes the class super interesting. His exams are based on his lectures. If you go to class or use lecture capture and write down the powerpoints, you'll pass the class. You'll have easy reflection papers 2-3 papers. This class is a GPA booster and a fun class too.

It might be different for future classes, but all of our lectures are online and recorded. As long as you watch the lectures and take notes you will 100% pass the class. I also suggest attending discussions because most of the answers to every test are played on kahoot! (But it depends on your TA)

I found the lectures boring but I really enjoyed our discussions and the reading w our TA. It's just that there really is no room for a low grade since most of the grade is from the three exams which weigh quite significantly. Make sure to look through all the powerpoints and TA's usually do review in discussions. Easy A just the occasional work.

Prof McCarty is super laid-back and kind. All lectures are recorded, so you'll 100% pass if you watch them and take notes. He makes the content really interesting and has a lot of cool stories. TAs are usually nice and will help you out. There's one reflection, two response papers, and three exams. Definitely take his class if you get the chance!

This professor was great! He really set the guideline for what a major in Criminology is going to be. Some people might say he is boring but that must be because they don't like criminology, I think he is an amazing lecturer. I highly recommend this class, but get ready to study!

This class is pretty straightforward if you stay on top of the readings and lectures. Using unstuck study along with the free course materials can really help with exam prep. The professor is engaging, even if the topics can get a bit dry at times.

Phenomenal instructor. Loved the class and developed my interest in CLJ to where I ended up majoring in it. Lots of readings but can manage, easy course to understand as well. Test are accurate to what he teaches, class attendance was not mandatory but I did attend since it helped me pay attention.

He was an amazing prof who prepared us for the 3 tests we had. No final exam, just a final test and its NOT cumulative, just on the last couple of lessons. Tests are online, take whenever u can, not in class. He does power points every lecture and assigns readings that u talk about in discussion, THEYRE ON THE TEST!! Great prof overall, would rec!!

Good prof, laid back! This class was solely slides and him going through the slides so attendance isn't mandatory. Sometimes he'll show a video during lecture. Discussion class does have attendance and it was a chill class !
