Really really nice guy who likes to try to make geology fun. However, he has one of those voices that puts you to sleep instantly. Other than that he's a good professor to have.
Bill makes geology fun! He is very passionate about his field and makes you excited to learn about it too. Bill finds creative ways to help his students understand the material. He is a great professor!
Great teacher and loves his work...he makes a extremely boring subject seem almost interesting! Weird sense of humor...but no ones perfect.
What could be more boring than rocks? This guy makes the whole thing worthwhile. He's funny and smart and really wants students to understand and do well. He'll entertain you, even if rocks don't.

Great guy, really helpful with a great sense of humor, tests are hard though!!
Expected a 102 class to be easier. Good teacher/person. Tests are a little difficult for a 102 class(fill in the blank, essay, and mult choice)
Wonderful teacher, you have to work in the class, but he is funny and actually cares about his students. He would always be willing to help!
Very friendly, easygoing guy. He will do almost anything to help you if you go to his office or ask for help. The tests were a little on the hard side, but if you study, they aren't too bad.
I like Bill, he's a good guy. Geology's pretty boring for the most part but he tries to make class fun. The tests were kinda hard, it seemed like everything was on the study guide & you never really knew what all would be on the exam. So you had to learn a lot of stuff that wasn't on the test.
Awesome Teacher. Funny and made a very boreing subjext some what interesting.
Very, very cool teacher with an AWESOME sense of humor and great stories. Was extremely helpful, and actually made geology really interesting!!! I love him so much I am taking another class of his next semester (and it's even an 8 am!!!). Tests were mildly difficult, but he helped you be prepared.
i love this guy.
Awesome teacher! A class thats all about rocks is so boring and nerve wreaking. He makes rocks the best thing going since sliced bread.Go to the review sessions and you will get a B or higher, no problem.
Easy class, nice guy. If you show up to class you'll do well.

This teacher teaches something uninteresting, but makes it super intereting because he has such passion for it!
Bill is an awesome guy. Really nice too. I think this is the only professor I've seen on this entire site with nothing but positive things said about him. Keep it up Bill... wish you were teaching my natural disasters class instead of Sickbert... *sigh*
awesome guy, very funny, holds study sessions and loves visits, makes the class easy, fun, and interesting. highly recommended
He is a great teacher. He is very friendly and is very enthusiastic. He makes studying rocks actually enjoyable. The tests are difficult. My roommate and I stayed up to four in the morning studying and still got C's. It is still a good class though and the lab work will easily bring up the grade.
He is a really good teacher. He makes learning fun, well, as fun as geology can be. He has notes online, so to get an A, all you have to do is study and go to class. I highly suggest taking this class.
Hes very funny. he has a crazy beard, but its great. hes also a nice guy.
I've never known a college professor so willing to help his students. He goes above and beyond to make sure his students understand his material. The notes are online and he is super nice. As long as you study for the tests you're good to go.
I love this man! He actually made geology interesting cuz he had amazing stories and insight! I loved going to class for the first time! I got an A without ever taking GEO. He gives you awesome studyguides & if u do them and study for a few hours I GUARANTEE you will ace the class. I DID! He's Awesome! I wish he taught all my classes! keep it up!
Great teacher!!! Very nice! His tests were fairly easy
Great Professor!!!!!! Very helpful and loves his job!

THis class was not easy but he was always so wiling to help and he also taught us a bunch of really interesting stuff.
Great life in his teaching skills. Loves his job and what he teaches.
GReat teacher take this claa easy A/B
Shields is the coolest person alive. Fill out study guides and make friends with the TA's who teach your lab. Attend Labs! Study for tests with study guide and notes on the website and you will be fine.
Bill is the best teacher I've ever had. He made the material interesting and I liked going to class. Make sure you get his lab section because he makes lab fun too and it helps for the exams.
Love this guy!!! I hated science before I had him!! He is amazing at explaining things and making class fun!! I laugh my ass off all the time in class!!! He really is awesome, you are missing out if you dont take him!!
Wonderful teacher with a great sense of humor. Can take the most incomprehensible idea in geology and make it crystal clear. Don't miss out on the field trips.
Bill makes learning fun and easy. Helpful man. TAs are good. Study guides give you everything you need. He really makes me consider becoming a GEO Mjr.
He thinks he's really funny. The tests were difficult. Everyone told me this would be an easy class but it's not BE AWARE! He's alright though.
tell alot of funny stories but they are a waste of class time as they have nothing to do with the topic at hand. Tests could be tricky.
It's pretty hard to make geology fun, but he did it. Every lecture was interesting, and that's saying something for geology. Best professor I've ever had.
Tells great stories that are NOT a waste of class time. I'd definitely recommend taking a class with Bill Shields. He gets the students interested in the subject being taught.
He is an awesome teacher! He totally keeps lectures fun and interesting. His tests aren't hard, but you def. will need to somewhat know the material to do good. AMAZING CLASS! take it!
I love having him as my geo teacher. He is really passionate about what he does and that is what makes the class fun. As long as you spend some time studying, going to levture & lab, then you're guarunteed an A. He's a funny teacher, and I hope to have him for another geo class someday! Go Bill!
He is by far the nicest man I have ever had for a professor. He is very kind hearted and is extreemly passionate about Geology, which makes the class 100 times easier.. If you need a lab science class.. take his! He is easily my favorite professor of the semester! and you dont have to buy a book
Nice man, but the tests are pointless. Class was too hard for a 100 level class.
very hard class. don't have to go to class just lab. all the notes are online. test are really hard. rarely any homework.
He is an awesome and enthusiastic teacher!! He wants to get to know everyone and make sure everyone passes!! I wish all teachers would be like him!!
loved this class, all geneds should be this way
he is a super good teacher. one of those that loves what he does and you can really tell. go to the classes even tho the notes are online b/c most of the stuff you learn is from what he says and then supported through the notes, if you pay attention and try it would be hard to get a bad grade
He's a nice guy, but the class is way harder than an introductory course should be, I wish I took physics instead. The material is so boring that not even Bill could make it not boring, hes very energetic and passionate about the subject.
Bill is an awesome teacher! he makes geology a little interesting, and easy to learn. He wants you to know everything about geology, so a lot of material is covered, but overall a fun, easy class.
Bill's cool, really passionate and definatly always willing to help. But as much as I liked him it didn't make up for the fact that the class was boring. The only thing good about it was Bill's personality. But it was definatly a hard class if your not interested in the subject...
BILL IS THE MAN!!!!! It is almost impossible not to get a A or B in this class.
He made me love geology
Bill is a great guy, very entertaining in class, but this subject is just not very interesting. Go to the review sessions they do help.
He is so awesome and the class is pretty sweet too! He is really clear and interesting. The tests and labs are pretty easy, also.
Amazing professor! He is extremely clear and knows exactly what he is talking about. He actually makes geology fun! I would definitely recommend him to anyone signing up for this class. He does not believe in using a text book and he gives you the notes to print out on his website. There are no Friday classes unless there is an exam.
Bill was a great professor. He loves what he does and tries to make you interested but doesn't expect geology to be your life. He's just really funny and a great lecturer. Every once in a while he'll look up and make fun of someone but not in a mean way. He's pretty crazy
HE IS AWESOME!!!!!
He is one of thee best professors ISU has to offer. He is a great guy. VERY FUNNY; trust me- TAKE THIS CLASS. He is very nice. He makes Geology a blast. He swayed me into majoring in it! :-) I am double majoring- MTE and Geology. I don't know what else to say, HE IS ONE OF A KIND. A lecture hall of 300, LOVES this guy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mr Shields is off the chain!
I wish Bill Shields was my dad. I once lived in his beard for a week. He hides pretzels in there (the stick kind, not the mini pretzels).
He is by far the best teacher I have ever had in college. He seriously makes rocks interesting. Overall he can get the material through to you so it isn't useless. i strongly recommend taking him. Also I heard that under his beard isn't a chin but a rock.
He is extremely nice and helpful. The only complaint is that the study guides for the tests aren't all that helpful.
Bill was the best teacher I had this semester! He's really funny and makes the most boring material interesting. The tests are kind of difficult and the study guides aren't too helpful, but studying notes is all you need to do. Attendance is mandatory because he gives random attendance quizzes, but the lectures aren't that bad I recommend this guy!
Bill was by far the best professor I had the entire semester. He honestly makes it very easy for you to earn and A in his class. There is no textbook and he tries his best to keep the class interesting. Hes funny and loves what he teaches. Attend his review sessions, do the study guides, and attend lectures and you will earn and A.
The material in class seems really understandable, and I studied a lot for all of the tests, but i just feel that the tests are worded awkwardly and for that I awful on the first two exams. But Bill is an extremely knowledgeable man and he is also very kind and caring for your needs.
Everyone told me this was the easiest class ever. having NO prior knowledge of geology, I found the first 2 tests to be extremely hard. However, he does give study guides for the tests. so as long as you go to class, take notes, do the study guides and go to the review sessions you should be able to do well in the class.
This class seems easy enough but the tests are actually hard! Shields is cool, but overall I think other teachers had a lot easier tests.
I didn't go to any of the lectures, just the lab. All the notes were online. I passed.
Fun teacher but the subject is just so boring. You have to really pay attention in this course
Entertaining teacher, somewhat hard subject. Try and go to lecture, since he will sometimes give attendance "quizzes" but all the notes are online, so it's not necessary. The lab T.A.s are useless, but the stuff covered in lab is usually just as useless towards the class.
I love his beard. but seriously he is a great teacher and a lot of fun
Hilarious to be short, always a story or something amusing to keep us awake.
He is the rockstar of professors!!! Everyone loved him, he was hilarious, and the subject wasn't all that difficult, all you had to do was go to class and listen, you dont even have to take notes. Then just study for like two hours before tests and its an easy A. Plus his beard is amazing :)
bill shields is the BEES KNEES! love him, he's very funny and always attempts to make geo interesting, frequently relating it to beer. . DEF. get him for geo, the class is pretty easy as long as you do the study guides. you can easily skip lecture, its all online, word for word
Bill Shields is AWESOME!!! Lecture information is kinda boring but he makes it interesting. He's always around for office hours and is extremely helpful and willing to sit and discuss any questions yo u have. Plus his beard is amazing. GO BILL
NOTES ARE ONLINE. GREAT TEACHER. MAKE SURE YOU STUDY HARD FOR THE TEST
Great teacher. Him and TAs are extremely helpful. Highly recommend this course.
He is an awesome teacher! You really should go to lecture because he gives out random attendance quizzes. All his notes are online and his tests are not that hard, but you really have to study for them. Overall awesome teacher!!!
Great teacher, interesting stories, makes geology interesting when honestly rocks are pretty boring. He is very enthusiastic. I recommend this class to anyone. It's an easy A.
I love Bill Shields. He is a great teacher and he really knows what he's talking about. It's not completely necessary to go to lecture, but he does clarify a lot of concepts there. And make sure he knows your name. In a class that big, if he can call you by name, you're in good shape.
Bill is a very interesting lecturer. If you attend lectures, you do not have to take notes because they are online. Tests are easy, and the class is set up to get an A if you study and do everything that he suggests. I would recommend taking this class if you need it for your general education science requirement.
Bill shields is the best professor I have ever had. No book is needed. Labs are easy. Lecture is actually pretty interesting. Very good guy. I highly suggest taking this class. You can easily get a B an A takes a little more effort.
best teacher/professor ive ever had. he know what he is talking about and makes class fun and interesting. much better than bio101
Lectures are not mandatory. But, you should go and take extra notes if you want a better grade. He does one or two random attendance quizzes. Lab is very boring, but Bill makes lecture interesting sometimes. Having it at 9 am was usually hard to stay awake. Get a tutor if you are having difficulty understanding the material.
Bill loves what he does and knows the material. I went to most lectures, but always was too tired to listen. If i was more awake, i think i could of gotten an A instead of a B. He is not bad. The exams could be harder, but you should still know all the study guide. No extra credit in this class, and lab is not worth enough points.
the material is kind of boring but he makes class pretty interesting. Very helpful if you are struggling in his class. Attendance is not mandatory but he did give a few pop quizzes when not a lot of people showed up. Good class
Bill is pretty much the man. He is very smart, and he is very helpful..almost always in his office. Never used the text. Notes were online. TAs are very helpful in the Lab. I never went to class except on test days and was able to manage a B. Just make sure you study hard for his tests, but he gives you a study guide. 4 Exams and 2 Lab Exams
Bill is awesome! Geology is not a very interesting subject, but he does his best to make it interesting. All the notes were online but still pay attention in class. There are 4 lab exams that are worth 75% of your grade and then 2 lecture exams. He is very smart and really tries to make students do goode even though there are so many in his lecture
Bill is awesome! All the notes were online but still pay attention in class.. He is very smart and really tries to make students do goode even though there are so many in his lecture. If you have to take a gen-ed science I would def recommend this one as one of them.study really hard for his tests though and go to review sessions.
Pretty good teacher. Lectures are boring, and not necessary to attend. All the power-points are on his website. Labs are painfully boring, but Shields is very available for help
Ahh I loooved Bill! He made my first semester just awesome. I thought all of my professors would be that cool, but they weren't.
Very Good Teacher
Bill is an awesome teacher. I hate all science and he made this course really interesting. I got an A by attending all labs and just doing/knowing the study guide. He is very helpful as well.
Bill is awesome! Funny stories and good lectures. Made it fun to have an 8am class!
This guy is awesome! One of the few teachers who can make jokes, and the whole 300 lecture class laughs! He's pretty interesting for the most part, my favorite professor so far at Illinois State! TAKE HIM!
Bill is awesome! You can see how much he loves to teach. He is always cracking jokes. The tests can be hard, but if you go to the review sessions they help. All his notes are online so all you have to do is pay attention in class. Labs are boring and long but they help you in lecture. He also does random attendance checks. I recommend this class!
Bill Shields is an institution at ISU, and there's a reason for that. He's a brilliant and engaging teacher, and he's great at explaining the course material.
Bill is great! You can tell how much he loves to teach. Some of the tests can be hard but go to the review sessions and to his office hours, he's always willing to help. He sometimes gives out attendance points so go to class. Notes are online, so just go to class and pay attention. It should be easy to get a B or higher as long as you study.
Bill is an awesome teacher! all his powerpoints are online but he makes the classes really fun and interesting. If you fill out the study guides and know all the info you will easily get an A or B in the class
This is the best professor i've ever had. He turned learning about rocks (BORING) into a topic so intersting I eventually changed my major! The optional class on friday is AWESOME, the movies are super cool and the review is helpful. Def make flashcards for exams, and use the study guide. No book needed.
He was super easy! No book required. He SAYS he doesn't care if you go to lecture or not. All his power points are online and he has a trillion TA's that run the labs so if you have a question, they're always available. He's a cool guy too! Very sociable.
Bill was awesome! He was super nice and more than willing to help you with any questions you have. He's very sociable with students and loves to interact with students. He makes geology a really fun and interesting thing to study and even had me considering changing my major! I would absolutely recommend him.
Bill is awesome!! Definatly recommend him to anyone that is looking for an easy A or B. He almost begs you to come visit him in his office for extra help. He told us we could come in and just eat lunch with him in his office! Funniest guy ever! Take him!
Awesome professor! Highly recommend! Cancels classes often! Do the study guide and go to classes occasionally and you will do great.
Bill Shields is the man, seriously. If you go to lectures, actually review the notes, and go to Lab days, you'll pass easily. All of his TA's are really cool and helpful as well. Bill makes rocks interesting, take this class!
Bill is honestly one of the greatest people I have ever met. His class is really enjoyable, even at 8 am. Go to the reviews and do the study guide. You have to study though to do well no tests. The TA?s are awesome and Bill is absolutely HILARIOUS! You don?t need the books whatsoever, and the powerpoints are online. I?m going to miss his class.
Bill is the greatest teacher I've ever had, seriously. He is ALWAYS available for extra help and explains things very well. He is so funny and personable, I absolutely love him. His tests are easy as long as you look at the study guide. Take this class!!
Bill is one of the nicestest professors I have ever had. He makes Geology as entertaining as he possibly can. Go to class!!! You need to study your notes and the powerpoints along with the study guide for tests. Do the homework, theres not a lot.
Do the homework, show up to lab, and go to your TA's review sessions and you're practically guaranteed an A or B. Shields is a great professor, I recommend him. Easy class if you study before the tests. Make sure you know each term on his study guide for his tests.
Bill is awesome. You really do need to study for tests, but all the powerpoints are online and he has a ton of T.A.s available. He answers study guide Qs on message boards, too, which is awesome. In lecture, write down things he explains that aren't in the powerpoint! Great gen-ed, expect a B.
Bill is really funny in class. As a Freshman he reminded me of my high school teachers. Even though its a big class there was always help on things that didnt make sence. very interesting class and awesome teacher. Plus you can skip when you want!
FUNNIEST professor you will probably ever have. He's just like a giant teddy bear and has a great sense of humor. Hardly any homework, labs are easy. Don't need the text book, all powerpoints are online and easily accessible. Answers questions on class discussion board. He is ALWAYS available for extra help..I recommend going for extra review.
Bill was a really cool guy. Labs are not bad and you never get homework. The Lab Exam was pretty easy if you study. The tests were not as easy as people said they were, you really need to study for them. Review sessions with Ryan will guarentee you a good grade. Go to class just in case there is an attendence quiz, they can add up.
best teacher ive had at isu so far. he is hilarious and actually cares about each student. the content is not the best but he makes it easy. and he has a sick beard
Bill was the best teacher I have taken at ISU so far. He is hilarious and always gets a laugh out of the class. You'll love him, take this class
BEST TEACHER EVER!!
He's a very funny teacher but his class is hard. you have to apply yourself. the labs aren't useful. You do something opposite in lab than what you are talking about in class. He puts the notes online so you dont have to go to class. Go anyways b/c he explains it better. He gives study guides & review in class. Meet with him and go to revw sessions
Everyone told me this class was going to be easy so I took itâ?¦ and it wasn't that easy. I did all the study guides and studied 2 days before and still got 70's on the exams. I'm not going to say I'm Einstein but for a gen ed I put in way too much work to get a C. He's funny & willing to see students individually but seeing him barely helped.
I had heard this class was really easy and Bill was super nice. Come to find out this class is much harder than it should be. His test questions are meant to trick you. The study guide contains nothing you go over in class so I suggest talking to one of the TA's about it. I would suggest getting help from the TA's before every test, it's worth it.
Bill spends the entire class telling various stories about his childhood and pervious career, none which are relevant to the material. The tests are hard and meant to trick you. It's too bad he's the only one who teaches this class. I would take this over Chem or Physics but he is a strange teacher, maybe it's worth taking a harder class.
This class is easy. The only way it's hard is if you don't go to class. The tests are pretty easy. I only studied maybe 3 or 4 hours the night before and got at least a 95 on every one, even a 102, and I'm no genius. Laziness will get you a C. Slacking will get you a B, and simply going to class, taking notes and studying a little will get you an A
Shields is a great guy. Disclaim: This is class isn't an easy A. An A is perfectly achievable, but you have to put in some effort for it. Even though he posts the notes/powerpoints online, he does a much better job at explaining it in person. Go to class, see him before the test, go to a review session, and you'll be fine. No textbook.
A great teacher!! High recommend! Very funny, and love his beard. If you get the chance, take him!
Bill is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He's more than willing to help outside of class to clarify anything you don't understand. He's always hilarious and energetic, which is a huge plus and it keeps me awake for class. Tests are not bad, you need to go to class and study a little bit. He usually cancels class on Fridays after the test.
He is really funny and makes geology about as interesting as any could make it. He posts the notes and powerpoints online and a study guide. I never really went to class and still got a B but have to put some effort in the class. DONT BUY THE TEXT BOOK!
He is super fun and energetic, he honestly tries to make it as interesting as possible since it is geology...
ABSOLUTELY LOVED HIM! He made this course as tolerable as possible. He had so much energy and you can tell how much he loved teaching his passion. He kept the whole lecture hall laughing! I would recommend him without a doubt!
Bill Shields is awesome. I enjoyed coming to his lectures. No one really has an interest in Geology, and he knows that. The material and tests are not difficult. He tells funny stories and jokes around alot. He's will call someone out during class for sleeping and its hilarious.
Hilarious, awesome teacher. Do not buy textbook. Kept morning lectures very entertaining. If you don't attend lecture, you can still pull off a B. No complaints.
he'es probably the funniest teacher i have ever had. He knows everything about geology and is always wanting to help out students. he does an online discussion board where students can ask anything and he will write back quickly in full detail. This is probably one of the best gen eds you can take.
I was worried when i decided to take a class that studies rocks but I'm extremely glad I did because I go the chance to see Bill in action. Class isn't hard if you study a bit before the tests. We only had 6 assignments the semester, and don't get the book because he never uses it just get his lab manual and you will be fine. Have fun he is great!
What an awesome guy!!!
I thought his class was good for a gen. ed. I wasn't interested at all in geology but he makes the class as fun as he can. Overall, I think he's a good teacher.
BILL SHIELDS IS AWESOME! He is one of the nicest professors ever and explains things really well, especially when you ask questions. He gives attendance quizzes so you do have to go to class, but he makes it interesting! Labs are kind of boring, but easy. Just make sure you study for the tests and it's an easy A!
Awesome beard. Some people are amazing people and super smart but they aren't just good teachers and unfortunately Bill is one of those people. He goes on tangents that are hard to follow. I learned everything from the TA.
He was nice, but not a great teacher. The tests were really hard and I studied for hours for each one. I kept doing worse and worse. I went to nearly every class period, and still did not that great in the class. His lectures were boring and hard to follow. He also said he will never take attendance quizzes and than he did.
Rocks are so boring and Bill makes them a little better. He gives out pop quizzes so go to the lecture as much as possible. You have to study a lot on your own though for an A.
Bill is great. He really loves what he does and it's obvious in his lectures. You can get by with a little studying if you go to class and pay attention.
Bill is a great professor, as many have said, rocks are very boring to learn about, however Bill takes a very fun-loving approach to Geology and makes it a more bearable subject. Class grade consists of 4 Lecture tests, 2 Lab tests, and lab homework/exercises.
Would take this course over any other science. Gives notes prior to class so not mandatory to attend. Gives side notes during class which are on the test so its up to you. Don't buy the text book, not necessary. Study for the tests thoroughly. The tests are difficult but the labs are easy. If you do a decent amount of studying you should get a B.
Great professor, if you attend lecture, the class is easy!
Fun class. but hard exams and lab exams
Everything you want in a college prof
He actually makes rocks fun
Best professor I have had yet. He is very entertaining and humorous and keeps my attention even though its about boring ass rocks. I would take this class over any other science class. The exams are not that hard if you attend lecture. And dont buy the book!
Bill Shields is wonderful. He loves what he does and works really hard to help all of his students succeed. The material can be a little confusing sometimes, but if you go and see Bill he will be more than happy to help you understand. I recommend taking this class because he actually makes learning fun.
Makes class extremely exciting. he makes everyone laugh and is great at what he does and even though he teaches 1500+ students a semester he will still make time for anyone who needs help. I would take this class a second time if i could. Highly Recommended. Easy A or B if you go to class and study for exams
Awesome Professor! He's a great guy, makes the class interesting, and extremely funny. He posts his lecture notes online, so you can miss a day here or there but you're missing out on some good laughs if you don't go.
Bill=AWESOME!!! I agree that you can miss a class but your missing out on some great laughs cause he is so funny and makes EVERYONE laugh!!!! You do have to work somewhat for tests but its really not bad at all. He is so helpful and nice and I loved him. He is also great talking to about 600-700 students WITHOUT a microphone in a huge lecture hall.
Best teacher ever. Failed the first test and ever since then i have gone to his office and had him teach me everything and i have never gotten lower than a B on the test since then.
Bill is the coolest professor ever and he made geology bareable. He is hilarious and gives you all the notes in advance. It is a leacture hall of over 600 and there are very few attendance quizzes. I found the tests and labs to be hard and the lectures to be a little irreliant. However, this was still a class about rocks and was very boring.
Bill is an awesome teacher! Took this class for GenEd. Got an easy A. Just make sure you study the PPT and study guide. If need help, go in for help or post questions you have online web board. First lab test was hard, but lab grade doesn't affect your grade very much.
Bill was an amazing teacher! I am not a science person, but he made this class interesting. He had all the powerpoints online which was very helpful. I did not use the book very much so I would not get it. If you need help GO IN AND SEE HIM, not scary and EXTREMELY HELPFUL. Final is NOT cumulative!! Bill was one of the best teachers I'ver ever had
Great teacher! He tries to make his lectures as interesting as rocks can be! Posts most of his stuff online but going to class helps in the long run because you cover more topics in class. Wants to see his students succeed and is willing to help out however he can! Loved his class!
Don't get the book. Bill knows the information but he tells a bunch of stories that keep him from finishing lectures in one day. Attendance isn't mandatory. All of the PowerPoints, study guides, and notes are online. If you need help, go to tutoring from the Visor Center and go to Bill's office for help. He will answer any questions you have.
Great teacher! Such an enjoyable class, even if you don't like Geology
The lectures I go to are pretty fun actually. He is a funny guy and he actually makes geology fun
Bill is a great guy and makes lectures more interesting. The test are harder than he makes them seem they will be. make sure to study and go in any time and ask him questions. You do not need the book for this class. Overall, if you study some and go to class you should get an A or B.
I took this class because I heard it was really easy and that Bill was a great teacher. Come to find out, I have been trying way harder than I thought I would have to. The tests are really hard and questions trick you. You will learn more from the TAs than you will from Bill. Too hard for a 100 level class, I would recommend taking physics instead.
As long as you go to lecture and pay attention to what he tells you to write down, then it is hard. I suggest going to a TA for the first test as you have to know not only just what things mean, but also know how to apply it. Bill is not scary and is more than willing to help. I highly suggest this course to fulfill your science gen ed.
Super funny guy! He is what makes this class interesting. Tells funny stories that help you remember what hes teaching. As long as you get D-C's on the exams and go to labs you will for sure pass the class. Just go to office hours if you have any questions. easy class
DO NOT BUY TEXTBOOK, you do not need it. Going to lecture is pointless. I have no idea how I got a B in this class, labs are super easy. Go to his office hours! He's so much better explaining one on one. Super funny guy and made our 9 AM lecture actually enjoyable.
Don't buy the textbook. Pretty easy if you're good with memorization. Get tutoring from the Visor Center!
Bill shields is the man, If you show up on review days, you'll get a solid B. An A takes a little work, but make sure you only buy the workbook, not the textbook.
Ohmygod I love Bill. In a lecture of 640 people, it's really easy not to show up but if you don't you'll be missing a lot of laughs. The labs are pretty easy but the tests you have to study for. He loves rocks. Like a lot.
Great teacher, easy class. Show up to lectures, pay attention, and take the notes he says to take, and you'll be fine. Labs are easy too. I still have yet to study for an exam and got A's on both that I've taken so far. And he eats lunch in Watterson once a week, so if you get the chance, sit down and eat with him. Even funnier cooler out of class
Great guy in general and makes rocks a little more interesting. If you cant pass bio like me, take this course!
Bill Shields is honestly the funniest guy you'll ever meet. He's very smart in what he does, but he discusses a lot more than Geology in his class. I highly recommend you take this class from him, you will not regret it.
Bill Shields is very caring and passionate about geology. Attendance is definitely not mandatory however, you do need to make a pretty good effort to do well in the class. I found the class to be very uninteresting. There is no extra credit and he curves test but only by a small percentage. Don't buy the textbook, you will not use it.
I absolutely love this man. I did not like geology, but he helped me bare through it. Nicest man and most helpful guy I have ever met. Anyone is lucky to have him for a teacher.
I took this class only because of what I had heard about bill shields, and i was not disappointed. Bill is one of the few professors that I've had at ISU who cares deeply about his students. He is always there to help and is alway understanding and extremely helpful. He loves his job and it makes you love the class.
Bill Shields is one of my best professors. He keeps you entertained and involved. He gives a few tests that are simply if you study and is always available after hours.
He's epic. I love his stories which they are always hilarious. His tests aren't that easy but bearable. Don't bother to buy textbook as he always posts his lecture slides and notes on website. Highly recommend to take his class.
He is a very nice guy. However, going to class is a huge waste of time because he gets off topic too easily and class usually gets let out incredibly early. All the material and study guides are online to study for the tests. Study his power points and study guides and you should pass all the tests easily. The labs are also very easy if you study.
Bill is an icon at ISU. He is by far the best professor Ive ever had, you would be missing out if you didnt take this class. He really cares about every single one of his students and makes it known. He knows his material well and wants to share it with us. Study the provided study guide and you should have no problem getting an AB BEST TEACHER!
It is easy to skip class, considering all powerpoint lectures are posted on website. However, he makes class interestingfunny and worth attending. Thought this would be a blow off class, but I definitely put more work into it than expected. Doing poorly on tests? Don't worry! He is VERY generous with the curve at the end of the semester.
Don't get me wrong, Bill is a funny guy. But funny isn't everything. You definitely need to work for the grade. Also, ISU students tend to over hype him I feel. Good professor, will make you laugh, easy if you put the effort in.
This is known as a super easy science to take but it was actually a lot tougher than I thought it would be. But as long as you show up and pay attention you should do fine.
Bill Shields is hands down one of the most charismatic guys you'll ever meet. His class is a fairly easy and popular gen ed, however, the tests are much harder than he makes it out to be. He doesn't take attendance, but does random pop & attendance quizzes that will effect your grade. Labs are easy. The study guides he gives are useless, however.
DO NOT GET THE BOOK. once more for emphasis: Do Not Get The Book. Bill even tells you that the first day of class. You do however need the lab manual, but its like $30 dollars so its fine. Bill is a fantastic person and very funny. I enjoyed being in his class. But you have to put in work, this is not one of those classes you can show up and pass.
Sometimes gives attendance quizes so make sure you actually go to class. Makes it clear that he is there if you need help and makes you feel like he cares about you individually even though it is a huge lecture.
Yo I mean, I ended up getting a 59.4% in the class and the man still passed me. Bill is one hell of a guy and honestly a great teacher. Geology isn't really my thing but he made it fun. If you wanna get a better grade than me just try. That's it .
One of the best teachers I've ever had, super easy to pass this class, if you go to the lectures he tells you word for word whats going to be on the test. He'll say Here is what you need to know for the exam; and you write that down and pass this class. Lectures are hilarious, he tells a lot of stories and relates them to the material as well
I took this class because of Bill's amazing funny reputation and he definitely doesn't disappoint. In order to do well though you have to pay attention and study and come to class. He prepares you for the exams in his lectures. He gives some attendance quizzes but they are normally on Wednesdays and on exam weeks he cancels class on Fridays.
Everything you hear about Bill is true. He's funny, he tells amazing story and is overall one of the better professor I have ever had. However, I will warn you geology is the hardest of the four gen. ed sciences. I had an 82% in his class and over a 100% in chemistry. If you're all about GPA, don't take his class.
Bill Shields is a god amongst professors. He is hilarious and tells the best stories (like the time he killed a man). On exam weeks he cancels class on Friday. Go to class for an easy 5 points when he give attendance quizzes. TAKE THE CLASS YOU WON'T REGRET IT. I wish he was my teacher for every class I have to take! DO NOT BUY THE BOOK.
This is a very enjoyable course. The only thing I have to say about it is that it is an easy B, but you will need to study for the exams as they are not as straightforward as you would expect. Study and you'll get an A
The man, the myth, the legend.. Bill Shields. The guy is absolutely hilarious and tells stories to keep you interested in a lecture of over 500 students, but will then relate the story to the material you're learning. Everybody enrolls in his class if there are seats available. B if you do your work, easy A if you put forth extra effort to study.
EVERYONE LOVES BILL. This is a great class, the material is boring, but he makes it better. TAs teach the labs and they really know what they're doing, and office hours are always available. The material isn't really something you pick up easily so you'll need to try for an A or B
Directions for an A: Listen to his stories, show up to class every once in a while, study his exam notes on his site, and pay attention in the labs. Your welcome
I thought Bill was a funny lecturer but not a great teacher. The class required too much work and Bill can kinda be a jerk sometimes. The tests and study guides don't match up, so you have to pay attention in every lecture to get all the info. If you do not study for the tests, you may not end up with a good grade. Also has attendance quizzes.
Bill was great, and I love him as a person. With that being said, this class was not as simple as everyone said it was. I SUCK at science and always have, and I'm going to end up with a very low C in the class. ((And I got an A in chemistry)) The material was boring, therefore I never studied until the night before. Don't expect an easy A.
Bill is GREAT! He is very corny and extremely helpful. Go to his office hours and you'll understand everything much better. The content of the class is pretty simple. Test are very important. There are only four and if you screw up on one the best grade you'll get is a B.
Bill is a very funny guy with numerous stories to tell. You do not need to go to lectures as he puts all the lecture notes online. Gives out study guides before each test which are very helpful. Must go to the labs for full participation points. Tests aren't terrible. Easy B.
Bill is everything you've dreamed of and more. He's helpful and funny and kind and he made what we were learning interesting. The only reason I got a C was because I underestimated his tests, you definitely need to study hard for them. I personally found the final the easiest of the 4. Also, attend all your labs. And just try your hardest.
Bill is awesome. His sense of humor is quite amusing. He will cancel class for "fishing" days whenever he feels like it. The material was interesting and easy to understand. While it's a huge class, the TA's are usually pretty good about answering any questions but I generally didn't have many because the lectures were pretty clear.
Bill is the man. definitely go to his office hours before the tests though, they can be difficult and he is very helpful 1 on 1. nice guy, enjoyed taking his class would definitely recommend
Bill is very funny. He makes the very big lecture fun. However, the tests are very tough and the information can be very boring at times. It is not as easy as everyone says it is. Print off the exam notes he posts online and bring them to class and you should be able to get a B.
Bill is the funniest teacher I've ever had! He cares a lot about what he's teaching and does his best to make sure everyone understands the content. His lectures can be long though, and unless you are interested they're going to seem like forever. As long as you really focus and take good notes, you should be able to do fine in the class.
GREAT TEACHER please take this class
Overall not a bad class, and not a bad guy. Lectures can be hard to pay attention to because some of the material is dry. Labs aren't bad and the homework is very easy. Tests can be hard even with studying, but just study and you'll be fine. Do not get on his bad side (Warning)
TAKE THIS CLASS. Bill is the best professor I have had. He's hilarious and makes geo fun. Material can be super boring but the tests are super easy if you go to class. Homework is super easy. Labs are boring but important so go. Also a very helpful professor, there for students whenever they need help.
He is so funny!
All around great Professor! Cares about his students and enjoys what he does. Test are easy to pass but will take alot of studying to get an A. I always found that his tests had about 20-30% really hard questions with about 50% of them being pretty easy.
Bill is a funny guy but honestly going to his lectures is pointless. He just tells stories and doesn't go over material.
Bill is a funny guy! The lectures seem rather long, but are worth it for his sense of humor. His study guides are extremely helpful as they cover all the material that will be on the test. Bill will tell you NOT to get tutoring from the Vrooman Center, but I went and thought the tutors were very helpful! Overall, great professor.
Bill is a great guy and his lectures can be very entertaining. It is a 700 person lecture hall so the class itself can be distracting at times. Geology to me was very boring, but Bill made it better. His tests are not too bad. This class is an easy B but a hard A. He does surprise attendance quizzes. Overall good class though and great teacher.
My friends and I do not get the hype about Bill Shields. If anything, he is one of the worst teachers on campus. Instead of teaching the class, he would go on a 20 minute rant per lecture about how he drinks beer and works out, what a waste of time. Luckily, I stopped going to lectures the last month and still got a B in the class.
Greatest professor ever! If you can take him, you'll be happy you did. He literally makes talking about rocks fun. Amazing sense of humor. Tests are not that bad but require some work. Information is clear. Wants you to succeed. I'd retake this course ten times if I could!
Bill is great! He's hilarious, tells great stories that are relate-able, and really has your best interest at heart. Tests are not too bad, all multiple choice. Labs are easy. Great class Great guy! Would take this class over and over just to hear his stories.
He is an awesome teacher. He makes class time fun with his dirty jokes. He is not a very hard grader. I missed my final exam for his class and he gave me a 50% on it, even though i didn't even take the exam. I don't know why he did this. But I don't recommend not taking the exam. Go to CLASS! he must have knew i was a geology major
Bill is by far my favorite professor at ISU. He cares so much about his students. I have learned so much from his class. Go to lectures and labs and you will pass. He is always willing to help and puts a lot of effort into his class.
Honestly, everyone says he's such a great professor, but I didn't think he was all that great. He kinda just tells us the information and doesn't really explain it. The tests are kinda difficult, and I studied for them. He tells a lot of stories, but they usually don't relate to the material at all and are just a waste of time. Wasn't too impressed
I am not naturally great with science classes. I got an A even though I almost failed the lab exams. Labs are all group work. Class is fun and you are given everything on the study guide for the tests. I never took notes, everything is laid out. Some extra credit opportunities too. So glad I took his class before I left ISU.
