the best prof in the world!! Actually cares about his students
No Comments
Bill is not a professor; Bill is a friend who happens to teach very well.
a refreshing experience, in a land of otherwise souless dispassionate profs
You've seen the big lebowski? Bill Skidmore is Jeff Lebowski... but more politically inclined, and not so... lowlife.
Amazing mind!
Bill Skidmore is the best teacher that I had ever had before. I learned the most from this one Human Rights course. Bill is better than a 10/10... he is a 10++++++++++ I hope I have the chance to take another one of his courses next year!
Very passionate and aware of the issues however, would be much better at teaching smaller size classes.

superbly awesome prof. i would take absolutely anything this guy taught.
Bill's seminar was the absolute best course I have ever taken. I would recommend it to anyone. He is passionate about the material, and yet orchestrates the seminars so that the students produce the fruits of the mind themselves. IwishIcouldRateHimHigher.
Bill is the best professor I've ever had ... he is passionate about his subject, knowledgable, and an all-around great guy. His Human Rights class inspired me to take it as my minor.
bill rocks my world. he's so cool.
SOOO COOL!!! Inspiring, intelligent, passionate. Knowledgeable. Cross between JFK, Mr Rogers, Santa Claus, and your grandpa! TAKE HIS COURSES!
Absolute best teacher at carleton. knows his stuff, and willing to help you if you care. Passionate and understanding, he needs a girlfriend, and a television. Gotta love the guy!
Very well liked (as you can see). Very left-wing. Very.
Excellent course and professor, but had a habit of bringing in his own political views a little too often instead of being balanced.
Unapologetically biased. Despite professing to be open-minded and encouraging dialogue, he isn't very tolerant of views that oppose his far left slant. Take this class if you want a guy trying to hold on to the 60's instead of teaching you something new
He's awesome! Gives a good alternative view on things. Kind, caring, compassionate and very approachable. If you can have him as a teacher - definitely take the opportunity!
the best prof i've ever had
Bill rocks! He's very passionate about what he does and is practically hell-bent on becoming the next Mother Theresa :)Kudos!
Cool guy but needs a TV and a haircut. He plays way out in left field, if you're conservative in anyway avoid the class because you'll get frustrated and you'll be heavily outnumbered.
There aren't enough teachers like Bill.
Bill's a great teacher who really cares about his students and human rights. Take his course, it really opened my eyes to a lot of issues.
A great guy. he cares a lot about the world around him and is not afraid to show that he cares to the class and get them to care to. he comes up with great guest speakers as well.
Bill is an exceptional teacher. It is great to have a teacher who is not only passionate about the course but that has experience to back it up. Nicest teacher out there, will devote ample time to any student who needs it.
I LOVE BILL. He has helped me with every aspect of the transition from HS to Uni. His course OPENS YOUR EYES, and his left slant is a breath of fresh air. And remembers our names.
great prof, can call out names in a 200 plus people class room, funny, helpfull, understanding, AVAILABLE
HES SO AMAZING!!!!!!!
Very nice, helpful. Super interesting class. Great class discussions.
Bill is an awsome prof and he especially cares about his students well-being. The course is amazing touching on some controversial topics. The course load is fair and Bill makes a point of making everything as clear as possible. Bill is very approacable.
Good teacher
The best prof in all of Carleton. Cares about his students. Wants to not only teach us about the injustices in the world, but wants us to grow as people. If CU had more profs like Bill, it would be the top rated school in the country!
Easy class, helpful prof, but beware of his biases! They are definitely there. Reminds me of a thinner Michael Moore, really.
Presents topics in a holistic way and challenges us to think deeper and to explore all aspects of one particular issue, not only to focus on what is "good" or "bad". Helps me a lot in the way I approach other aspects of my life and my relationship to people and to the world.
i loved this class it really made me passionate about stopping injustice. his classes are generally interesting and he makes an effort to add variety with a lot of guest speakers and videos. in a class of 200+ he still remembers my name three years later (and i only ever had him for that one class!)
Bill is the BEST professor at Carleton Univeristy. If you drop this course,or fail out, your an idiot. Remember that. If you cant pass Human Rights, you shouldnt be in University. Bill Skidmore is one of the few things standing between Carleton University and a **** pile of crap.
He's a pretty good prof. He's quite helpful and makes the class interesting. He wants to make things as clear as possibly for everyone and gives great review sheetes for the exam. He really challenges you to think about both sides of a story. Watch out for his bias though.
Great!
one word: amazing.
Looks like the cowardly lion from The Wizard of Oz, great prof. Helpful, friendly, truly cares about his students and human rights.
Bill is an amazing person and teacher. As far as his course, he covered up to date topics, encouraged discussion, played devil's advocate, by far the best experience I've had to date in university. If you read this Bill, know that there are many at Carleton that support you.
Either do the readings or go to class, Bill wastes time by simply reviewing exactly what was said in the readings, better yet, only go to the class to drop off essays and get final reviews (which by the way has no lecture information included)so if you take notes you are wasting your time.
He is such a kind, nice man. He is biased so you must be aware of this, but still very good. His lectures are very repetitive of the readings so you could choose to do only one. Otherwise, very good prof and I recommend him to anyone. Very up to date issues.
An amazingly heroic man! Inspired me in every lecture. Couldnt have made it through first year without him. I'll always have a spot in my heart for ya, Bill.
I took this class last year, but wanted to rate Bill as an inspirational and passionate professor whose class should be mandatory for all disciplines!! His class has the ability to open up the minds of the close-minded and inspire the apathetic. A great class with a truly unforgettable prof!
Very passionate almost too passionate, knows his stuff, chooses favorites quickly, push over, rolls his eyes a lot at people's opinions, grungy looking, inconsistent, subjective marker (if he agrees with your argument you'll get a good mark if he doesn't your screwed), closed to discussion of marks
Sweet, caring, passionate, genuine man. Looks like the lion from the wizard of oz, but hey that's cool too. Easy class as long as you aren't a bush-supporter (and who is?). I'd reccommend any of his classes. He's amazing, and once again, SO genuine and sweet.
An amazing prof. As everyone has said: very passionate about his work, and the topics that he presents to you. Not sure what the person below meant by his rating, but it not true at all. If you want an experience with a great prof. and are interested in HR...Bill is your man...Just ask on Campus
My best first-year prof. Kind, thoughtful, genuinely concerned about human rights as a mindset, not just a subject. Has his biases, but listens with an open ear to other ideas. Brought in some terrific guest speakers who opened my eyes up. I switched my major to human rights because of this man.
Amazing prof. Have never met anymore more passionate. He has his bias', but everyone does. He doesn't just know about what he teaches, he has lived in and travelled to places where human rights violations are rampant. He is willing to help with problems, even if they don't relate to the course.
He's amazing. I learned more from his class than any other university class. He teaches about the current issues/events that matter in the world. he has insightful, thought provoking guest speakers. He's truely an amazing person who will go out of his way at -40 in a snow storm to wait for you bus and say hello.
Prof. Skidmore is easily one of the warmest and most welcoming people I have ever met. He does a great job handling sensitive subject matter and if you're in first year, he'll try to make your transition to university very comfortable.
I'm in this class right now....best class ever!!! Bill is an awesome Prof and person. I almost feel like a lesser person just being in his presence because the greatness and compassion just radiates from him. TAKE THE CLASS, you WONT BE SORRY
wonderful course, wonderful guy.
Bill is an utterly amazing prof. He is so passionate and involved with human rights which makes it interesting for everyone. Also, he is so adorable because he's technologically impaired.. i think we had CCS there almost every class! LOVE THE HAIR BILL!
BEST PROFF EVER! Clear lectures, very interesting and very good marker! if you are at carleton you must take atleast one class with him!
Amazing prof. Highly recommended.
Truely inspring! Reminds me of the lion from Wizard of Oz! HE's great! Take a course with him if you can!
Really really nice prof. I highly recommend his human rights classes. Very caring guy and teaches inspiring classes.
Bill was amazing, his enthousiasm is infectious, take the course you will NOT regret it, the topics are interesting, and he really is passionate about every single one, only class where I looked forward to the readings and even did them before they were due. Brings in guest speakers almost every lecture, class is NEVER boring.
Bill was very passionate about his classes and the topics at hand, which made every lecture that much more interesting. He has excellent anecdotes and relevant/well-picked guest speakers. His class was one of my favorites! The only thing was that he was late returning assignments. He also didn't use rubrics, so marks seemed kind of random.
Bill's classes changed my life, they changed the way I view the world and how I think of people. His first year Human Rights class will make you a more empathic human being. He genuinly cares about his students and absolutely believes and fights for what he teaches.
intro to human rights... I'm not a big reader, and by that i mean.. i don't read at all.. but I did for this class... Very interesting material, and Bill is my favourite or second favourite prof I took in first year... I agree with all the other comments (unless they say otherwise) Take this course with Skidmore!
The most engaging and inspiring professor I've ever had. Take a class from this man by any means possible! I honestly could not wait to go to class week after week, because he brought relevance and meaning to the material, and it was important stuff already. Very helpful, gave exam study questions- not interested in 'tricking' anyone.
Best professor I have had yet. Inspiring. His passion for what he teaches is amazing. I would highly recommend this class. I have learned so much and plan on taking more of Bill's classes in the future.
He is a great person, extremely passionate and intelligent. He goes above and beyond the call of duty for his students. I honestly have nothing even slightly negative to say about him. I wouldn't say his classes changed my life but he is a really, really great prof!
He is the best Prof I have ever had....his message will be with me forever....
Absolutely amazing person and professor! There are some professors who really don't give a damn about your well-being but not Bill. He displays a genuine interest in his students and even after the class is over, you can still turn to him for help. Definitely take his class!
Bar far the best Prof. I have ever had, Bill changed my view of the world. He was one of my first profs and after completing my masters he is still the best I have ever had. A pleasure to listen to and learn from.
I love Bill! His teaching style is awesome. I just want to hug the man!
Absolutly phenomenal professor and person. His passion is contagious. I think this is one of the most important courses a student could take at Carleton University. I can truly say it changed my life and because of him I have made it my mission to change the lives of others. Bill Skidmore is a truly an amazing person.
Bill Skidmore is the best Professor at Carleton University hands down! Even when I'm sleepy, I'm still listening to him in class and rarely does sleep come to mind.
An alright professor. Not as amazing as everyone seems to be making him out to be here. Course content was interesting but didn't changemy life at all. Too much jumping around from one tragedy to another actually made me more apathetic. If you're a good reader & essay writer, take this class for an easy A. If not, just go change the world yourself.
Bill is really passionate about Human Rights, and it showed in his lectures. Great professor, and an overall great person. He brings in some really interesting guest speakers.
Awesome teacher!
Sounds like a nice guy, but overall a bad prof. He is biased, his slides are lengthy quotes, often he rants about Christianity, and a lot of his guests are Christian. Being atheist, it's annoying. He seems illogical and it's a human rights class... not a religion class... seriously.
Bill is intelligent, kind and motivating. A great man and a good professor. He does have some issues with jumping around a lot and mostly using quotes for his class. Notes were nearly impossible to take. But a great class none the less.
Bill is really passionate about ethics issues, and he really motivates his students to make a difference and realize some of the atrocities that can happen. His lectures are heavily based on the readings, so you don't really need to worry about note-taking during the lecture. The guest speakers are what really make the lectures worthwhile
Does not attempt to mask his bias. Lectures are hardly engaging as he rants incoherently about some obscure quote. Completely overrated.
He works alot from the readings but is great at brining passion to what he is talking about, and bringing in guests to help you relate to the topic.
Very passionate and interesting man. However, not the best prof in the world. He's extremely biased in his world view and I found it extremely intimidating to voice an opposing view. Lectures were really well done, great guest speakers, AWFUL lecture notes though. Mainly just a series of quotes. Must make your own notes based on what he says.
Never thought I would enjoy this class soo much!
Take this class if you really enjoy stories about bicycles and random lectures on quotes that have absolutely nothing to do with exams or essays. He's useless and an absolutely horrible prof. Only take this class if you absolutely need to!
THE MOST overrated prof at CU. Take his class if u enjoy learning about his life stories, quotes on the slide and an overkill of readings on the same topics. EXTREMELY BIASED. DOES NOT CARE ABOUT HIS STUDENTS ALTHO HE CLAIMS TO. But easy marker, easy exam...so take it if you want an easy A but beware if you are not like him, he will NOT LIKE U!
More than willing to help every student succeed. Has immense respect for students and their individual experiences. Shares experiences to enrich the learning experience. His class is like no other. Highly recomend
Bill is one of the most passionate professors I know. He is dedicated to human rights and works hard to ensure that his students are exposed to pressing human rights issues and violations that are occurring around the world. His classes consist of one paper and one exam. Do all of the readings and research well for your paper and you're golden.
The most passionate professor I've had all year. Great to talk to about this course or just life in general. Uses a selection of great readings which are tough to get through but he bases his lectures off of them which makes things crystal clear :)
Great Prof who was helpful and a nice guy to talk to after class, his lectures may be kinda of a bore buy they are really interesting. Make sure you do the readings cause all exam questions from there. Tutorial are an easy 10%; just show up, you really don't need to participate.
Very interesting lectures, brought in awesome guest speakers too. Make sure you go to class for those nights and listen to them speak. Many intriguing subjects, you'll definitely open up your views on things. Essays are hard, and exam was ridiculous though. Take notes on EVERYTHING, and do ALL of the readings. Memorize even...
very passionate prof, definitely opens your eyes to lots of issues! awesome guest speakers. very helpful and approachable, although biased. notes are impossible to take, but wouldn't worry about it. had an awesome tutorial group and ta. marking was easy enough with good feed back. didn't do readings, minus what was on exam outline, easy a on exam.
His lectures are just a bunch of quotes. If you're an engineering student, don't take this class as your elective because it's pointless and boring. The artsies don't even pay attention to him, you can tell by how many people are on facebook during his lectures. The upside is the great guest speakers we get every week.
I was told by many people to take this class, but honestly, Skidmore and his TA's are very biased and you essentially have to conform to what they think otherwise risk being called morally bankrupt and other such things. That being said, as long as your essay is politically correct and in English, it's pretty easy to ace this class.
Amazing! One of the best professors at Carleton, a genuinely nice human being. Always helpful, always teaching you something new!
He is an amazing professor, he is extremely passionate about the subjects he teaches. All classes are centered around your readings. Exam is not difficult if you study and do your readings. essays are pretty open but have to be related to the particular course theme. My favorite prof. notes are quotes.
I have had Bill as a prof many times and I must say he is one of my favourite profs at Carleton. His passion for human rights guides the way he lives his life and he passes that passion on to the students in his lectures. Classes are not difficult if you do the work and show up to class. Get to know him outside of class - he's a remarkable prof!
Easy if you just follow instructions, and he gives you ridiculously clear instructions. TAs are awesome. He's super helpful. Guest speakers are awesome. Tough out the first half of HUMR 1001, it gets super interesting.
I love his Human Rights Class. He's super dedicated to what he teaches. Amazing guest speakers and very emotional.
Definitely the best prof for a human rights class. He loves what he teaches and he expresses his emotions. Very well with answering questions and teaching students who have questions.
He's really an amazing prof. His classes are so ridiculously easy but so interesting at the same time. Note taking is not even necessary and he gives you the exam questions before the exam, I repeat, HE GIVES YOU THE EXAM QUESTIONS. Take anything he teaches, you won't regret it.
Amamzing, amazing, amazing!! Bill is the most accommodating professor I've ever had. He always goes out of his way to put his students first and is pleasant, despite the serious nature of the material we discuss in class. Bill challenges his students to think abstractly ways and takes a modern and interactive approach to the study of human rights.
Every one of his classes are the same topic, political repression. Topics are repetitive, and discussions are futile. Essays are ridiculously complicated and easy. Exam's are straight-forward. Class attendance is mandatory. I love the topics stand alone, and readings are good/outdated but the class is very repetitive - same lecture every week.
Overrated prof. You should spend your time doing the readings instead of going to class, honesty. You'll do better on the exam. He just rambles on. I got an A+ because I rocked my essays and love human rights--not because he taught us anything. Props to my TA, she ruled.
Great prof, easy class! Mark was based on 3 essays, tutorial attendance, and a final exam. Going to class is to necessary, he gives you the questions for the exam and all of them are based on the readings, not what was discussed in class. It's worth going in for guest speakers though, they get interesting.
no amount of words I type can describe how great Bill is! He is hands down the most passionate, caring, inspiring and helpful prof I have ever had. there is no fall exam and he gives you the Q's for the winter exam beforehand! I still remember everything I learned in his class! Try to take at least one of his classes, you wont regret it :)
Bill is a super prof. He is so passionate about what he teaches. He is EXTREMELY understanding and gives interesting articles to read. He is very clear about what to study for, and therefore ace-ing an exam is not very difficult. The class was worth taking..
Excellent prof and a very nice guy! He always keeps students informed via e-mail about due dates, guest speakers, etc and he is very passionate on the subject. He doesn't like the use of laptops during lectures, which can be a downfall, but most of his course is assignments and he tells you what to study for the exam.
AMAZING PROF!!! Have had him several times, he takes pride in what he teachers. Overall very nice, friendly prof who is always willing to help him students.
I would not recommend this professor to future students, he prohibits laptops, rambles on and is extremely hard to follow and boring
besides the no technology prohibiton-- amazing prof, he is passionate and educated in what he teaches
Great prof, supplements already interesting information with tons of knowledge and engaging guest speakers who share personal experiences. The essays are straight forward and gives clear expectations. Definitely recommend taking one of his classes.
Bill is a calm man and can get emotional when speaking on stuff that really interests him. The thing about his class if that it always has 2 sections: 1) a paper, 2) exam. I think they are worth 50% each. His exams are easy because he gives you the questions. I got around 55% on the paper and ended with a C- overall.
Love Bill! Love Bill! Love Bill! He is inspirational and his lectures are great. He cares and brings in guest speakers that will blow your mind. Tough topics but things we need to know and have been politically sheltered from us.
Really great guy that cares so so much about the material he teaches. He will even get quite emotional during lectures on certain subjects. Only critisism is that he is quite bias, but this is expected in such a class. 10% tutorial, 20% paper, 20% paper, 25% paper, 25% exam. Overall interesting course.
Amazing teacher of a difficult subject. Some videos were disturbing&left me feeling traumatized but I was glad to have seen them, none the less.If you don't care about human rights&don't have the patience to show respect by listening-skip this class.Nothing worse than hearing a guest speaker's trauma while 200 uni brats play on facebook.
Bill is a great guy, makes the class really interesting, bringing in many guest speakers and covers a range of human rights issues. It's a pretty heavy class, he talks about torture a lot but it's super eye-opening. If you participate in the discussion groups and do the readings for the final, it's not hard to get a good grade.
Bill Skidmore is one of those teachers you remember and feel inspired by long after you leave. His classes were passionate, interesting, eye opening, supportive ( as in he is there to talk to if something really affects or tiggers you) and inspiring. Amazing guest speakers. Amazing class, with an amazing man.
Bill was a great prof, always available to meet with you and discuss material. Lectures are kind of pointless but i'd still go as they are very interesting.
Hes a great prof and very passionate about what he teaches. Lectures are not too important but I would still go. Exams he usually gives the questions and thus they are super easy!
I love Bill's class! He is one of the kindest and most down to earth dudes that you will ever meet. His lectures are fairly interesting but can be a bit dry. I wish he had better slides, I feel like that would keep me more into the lectures. If you have Bill you 100% need to do the readings!! It essentially comes down to that for the final.
Very lazy lectures. Drones on, and almost always videos. Certainly passionate about the subject matter but the class seems to center around 'boohoo the world is a bad place'
Bill was fantastic! I really enjoyed having him as a prof. He's definitely one of the profs you will remember forever - he's such a neat dude. Readings surely take a lot of time and are crucial for passing this course. His exam is solely based on readings. I would love to take another one of his courses! Would recommend to anyone interested in HUMR
Excellent professor. Very knowledgeable. Term mark consisted entirely of a paper, an exam and participation. Focus on the readings and take good notes from readings in order to do well on the exam. Once you do that and ask him for help for the paper (which he gives a lot of great help), you're golden and your mark will be great.
I absolutely love Bill. His voice is soothing but his lectures are full of interesting (but heavy) stuff. Is very fair with his assignments and the exam is very straight forward. Make sure that you actually do the readings though because the exam is entirely based on them. Such a nice guy outside of class as well, he made me appreciate human rights
Love, love, LOVE this man. Hands down the best human rights professor at Carleton. His lectures are incredible and get you really questioning human rights implementation globally. I've had a couple classes with him and he never fails to disappoint. Is there when you need help, or even just to talk about human rights in general. Take his class!!!
BEST PROF EVER! Words can't describe how perfectly he's suited for the job
Most genuine professor at Carleton! Bill is the mot amazing man, with the kindness biggest heart and so many worldly experiences and stories. He truly changed the world, and he just hopes he can teach these stories and lesson onto his students. Would recommend 10/10 you learn so much about different conflicts abroad. Show up and listen and learn!
Boo hoo, the world is bad place. Bill cares more about feelings and what should be done rather than the reality of things. Lectures have nothing to do with the assignments so just stick with reading the material. Be careful if you have a different opinion than him. His class will slander you if you actually think outside the box.
The entire course was centred around this man telling stories of his personal experience. However, we never really learned about any ways in which Human rights could be actually tackled. More of a history lesson of this guys life. Don't bother taking notes because he literally just puts quotes up and reads from the slides. Caring guy, awful prof.
Amongst the few of the most compassionate and caring professors Carleton University ever has. He is truly concerned about Human Rights issues and really helps to raise awareness and the gravity of the pertinent issues. Do not hesitate to take a class with him if you're passionate about Human Rights, you won't regret it.
Bill is THE BEST professor i have had in university! He's so caring and very understanding. He is the reason why one of my majors is in Human Rights. Not only are his lectures interesting, but he has taught me that being a good person is important. I have learned so much from him that has helped me grow as a person. Defiantly recommend him!
Being an international student at this greedy institution (Carleton), Bill's courses were worth every single penny i have spent! He has amazing lectures, is very caring and grades fairly. Defiantly recommend him! He is the reason why i'm majoring in Human Rights! I learned so much from him!
Bill is an angel, he is truly passionate about his work. He is very respectful of students and class content, and does everything possible to help students succeed. Gives attendance marks just for showing up to tutorial, participation not needed (lecture not mandatory). He showed a lot of videos and drew upon his own experiences.
So boring, lectures were long, useless and boring. go for the guest speakers. he was a good person but Jesus was he boring.
Wonderfully inspiring and extremely wise. Courses could, however, be more valuable if they were more challenging.
SPEAKS SO FAST YOU DON'T HAVE TIME TO TYPE ANYTHING. I am an extremely fast typer and I don't have time to type let alone comprehend anything he's saying. Passionate about his work. If you do the readings, you will do well. Class is pointless as he rambles on about everything and anything and when he DOES get into the material, you can't keep up.
I love Bill, I would do anything for him and have accepted him as my lord and saviour.
His lecture slides SUCK so a tip is to create a good reputation with him and ask him to send you his lecture notes that he reads off of. Get ready to face the world's reality in this class but feel free to talk to him when needed. He is very helpful and understanding. He gives two papers and an exam. His papers are doable. His exam strain the hand.
