She's a cool professor. Funny comments. Recommended. Understanding.
She's so nice! willing to help students, a good teacher.
Sweetest woman you'll ever meet. Uses power point to teach lecture. Always there to help. Ph D. she knows her stuff!
Good person, bad teacher.
she's really nice but she's unclear and forgetful...hard to understand her...like the previous comment: good person but bad teacher
She is a very sweet person but she is hella hard to understand. She's such a small person, so you can barely hear what she is saying.
She is very nice and kindly. She will answer any questions you asked. Her exam is not really hard ( if you study hard) You have to do well on reports for lab, otherwise, you won't get perfect grades.
Damn she sucks! You do not want to take her class. Confuses the class and herself. Good luck taking notes of her powerpoint lecture, you get about 5 seconds for 5 slides. Her tests are never proofread; so many mistakes! Good Luck!
If she doesn't like you, she'll "lose" your lab work and give you grades based on how much she hates you. She always ignored myself and my lab partner when we had questions to ask. I find it hard to understand her English. Worst teacher I had at
really nice and willing to help but confusing sometimes though...tests and quizzes aren't hard if u read tho...bull abt her losing labs on purpose, she does lose stuff but its cuz she's old
Behind her tough, no-nonsense facade is a kind and caring professor. She expects you to work hard but goes out of her way to help the struggling student. A difficult, math-intensive course. Tough tests and quizes, and relentless lab reports.
I just had her for lab, and found out that she teaches that lecture part too??? I couldn't imagine sitting through that torture. She is a nice person, but she makes the material so boring. Do not take her if you are easily distracted. Hard to
Personally I prefer her over Cox. I had Cox for lec and Lo for lab, but one time Lo taught the lec and it was much clearer. Her exams are easy, the labs aren't too bad although she can be pretty picky. And I still don't understand her check-dash grading
I had Dr. Lo for lecture. I think her tests are very straightforward. She was very, very helpful. She would stay after class for about an hour going over people's questions. As far as clarity, she was good the first few weeks...sort of went down tho.
She's somewhat strict about a few things, but she's very forgetful. She never gets tired of explaining things over and over. I recommend taking her. She's a really cute and funny old lady, and very helpful.
i only had her for lab, i love her, i learned so much! she didn't mind explaining things over & over again, patient, understanding, very good! graded somewhat tough on labs, but i learned so much, i highly recommend for lab
Nice teacher! Willing to explain the materials to you. Lots of work but you'll really learn something from her. Exams are fair, mainly calculations, if you hate theories, it is a good news.

she is cool, helps her students and grades ok on lab reports, there are 2 lab midterms and a final, so make sure study, open book by the way. and makes ure googles or on
This is a very confused little woman. Boring lectures, where she usually ends up getting confused about the calculation, and needs to stop and think for 5 minutes. Speeds through the slides and expects you to write everything down. Put simply "Horrible teacher, nice person."
Dr. Lo is a super nice lady, and she really tries hard to help her students understand chemistry (she even arranges study sessions on non-class days). Although she is a terrible lecturer, as long as you do all your homework and ask her plenty of questions after class and during lab you'll be fine.
BEWARE OF HER QUIZ.
She's easy on grading but doesnt know what she's doing. I hardly understand what shes saying on her lectures netheir the rest of the class. If you have a choice to take her class and another teacher please take the other teacher for your own sake of learning chemistry.
Seems a little disorganized and often leaves the class during the lab for short periods of time so you can't find her. Seems like a nice person though. Not the most lenient grader, but not too hard either. Tries hard to explain when asked a question. Overall, I would say she is an average instructor.
She is great at lecturing, very clear, but a litle confused on procedure and calculations. Grading is weird with checks and dashes. But you learn a lot, so she is not too bad overall.
You can't go wrong with Dr. Lo for Lab. It was very striaght forward. Her test was also striaght forward. I highly recommened her for lab.
She's not bad. Her test are pretty easy if you know the material and her labs are very staright forward. But she's not very good at explaning things. I had to read the book, do all the homeworks and understand the material myself cuz i had no idea wat she was talking about in class. very helpful thou if u go n talk to her.
She's really helepful, test and quizes aren't that bad, she prepares you with homework and quizes plus, I did most of the online hw and the quizes and test were a breeze. If you have a problem go ask her, she'll explain it to you, sometime it gets annoying cuz she takes too much time explaining simple stuff you want to slap the person who asked.
One thing I regret is not following along in the lecture and thinking I could get the info out of the book. She is much more clear and condenses the information you really need to know. She's a nice teacher if you come see her during her lab period or hours. She is a pretty easy grader. 72% average on all tests and you get an A.
She's very helpful and gives a lot of extra credit (about two letter grades worth). She doesn't explain very well during lecture, but offers tutoring sessions if you need it.
She is a decent instructor and a very nice person. She is very helpful when asked and will really try to help you understand. She gave us the option of doing the online or book HW. Do the book HW, trust me. In lab she is strict about safety and cleanliness. She gives quite a bit of extra credit, which I only did one of and still got an A.
Three words, Don't take her!Class was okay for me cause i've taken chem before.Others had to struggle a lot! If you take her, make sure you attend all lectures and do the extra credit for an A. Puts material she hasn't covered on tests, so read the book in advance. slackers, stay away cause u aint gonna pass. lots of work in this class so be ready!
She is extremely NICE, but her lecture is a little bit unorganized. I really enjoyed her class though, even though that quarter i had Bio, Chem, and Phys.
Her assigments are really helpful just like her. Highly recommended
Mrs. Lo is very nice as a personal, she is willing to help u if there are any confuse. She really fair on grading, plus give lots of extra credit so it help u to pull the test grade up. For me, it is an easy "A", but u need to earn it by study hard reading book and pay attention to detail. but overallshe is very nice and funny and understand teach
She's not bad. The material was all over the place and somewhat disorganized. But in the end, she applies a generous curve to the grades, although she says she doesn't. How else could I have gotten that A. Thanks Dr. Lo.
She is nice, and her class is easy. But she didn't teach well in class, but if you need help go to her office, she will be very patience to teach you.
Many extra credit opportunities. You have a chance to make up points more than you've lost on exams/quizzes. All the worksheet you turn in are extra credits(It's not on the green sheet, but it is true) Very helpful to those who have trouble with chem. Online HW is time consuming, but you can learn a lot from doing it.
The easiest instructor on campus, I would say! She is jus sooooo nice! Her tests are ok, but the final, i think, is easy. there is usually 25% of the class got A. She is soooo great!!! I can promise you there is no easier chem instructor at DA.
It was really an easy class. At the end, when I was so busy with my other classes I almost did not study at all and still got A in her class. She is nice and helpful. luv her
I don't know what all these people are talking about. Shes a nice person, but a horrible teacher. All I needed was a 65% on the final to get a B in the class, but the way she tests she makes it impossible to succeed. Take Chemistry with Gray, I learned more in ONE of his lectures than I have all quarter with Lo. Good Luck!
Not worth sitting in class. Her exams and midterms are easy if you study from the Book. She gives some "important" notes during lecture, but that's once in a while. Loads of extra credit opportunities. Don't give up easily in this class. Try your best and you can get an A. Take the Lab with Heibert! Her Online HW is very time consuming
Useless and VERY disorganized. She is difficult to understand. Her lecture notes are worthless since she makes so many mistakes, expect to ONLY learn from the book. Quiz every class meet based on last lecture. Online homework is really time consuming. Lots of extra credit. Doesn't reply to email. She makes Chemistry more painful than it is already.
She has great intentions, but does not always explain things clearly. Difficult to learn from lectures, I learn most everything from the online homework. I used the lectures to know what I should focus on for quizzes and exams. Do the online homework BEFORE the quizzes and exams, and you will have an easy A. I don't even use my textbook anymore.
Lots of online homework, lectures are absolutely pointless. She is so hard to understand and her explanations don't help at all. She makes people hate chemistry.
She is nice and will to help. The only problem in this class is that she is not very good at explaining. She give a lot of work and extra credit.
She is very helpful teacher if you ask her questions, but her test is quite different from what she teach in class, and if you want good grade, you have to study the book very hard. Her exams always are multiple choice, and it is hard to get higher grade. However, she has many extra credits. I only got 80 in average in her exam, but I got A finally
She gives a lot of extra credits. It is easy to higher your grade. will learn stuff in lab! LOVED HER
An utterly useless teacher. If you take her class then be ready to bury yourself in the textbook because it is the only way to learn anything in this class. She also requires that you pay $50 to buy the online code for the book. Probably because she's too lazy to collect/grade the damn homework. All in all, I HIGHLY recommend not taking her.
if you are a kind of person who likes to read then take her. otherwise, must avoid! everytime we ran out of time in class, she just told us to go home and read the text by ourselves. the worst is the online homework which is a waste of money and time comsuming. midterms are very tricky!
She is very hard to understand and not clear on assigments, howework, etc. Her tests are completely different for what she has taught on class....
Homework is a waste of time, but gives you credit for it. Tests are kind of hard. Quizzes every week.. just read the book and you'll be fine. Dr. Lo is extremely nice and is always willing to help you. She tries her best to make things fair for her students.
One of the worst chemistry teachers at De Anza. She skims through powerpoint slides without explaining them. She BARELY covers material, and when tests come around, they are full of questions and topics that WERE NEVER COVERED IN CLASS and/or are not mentioned in the textbook. Her class is very aggravating because she does not teach. Avoid her.
Essay A+, tons of extra credits. She is a kindly lady
- Working hard will be awarded.A lot of extra credit. Not put too much pressure on students. Very kind and enthusiasm Professor.Easy A if you work hard.
Emphasizes the ends of random sentences. Doesn't understand what you are saying. We could be speaking English for all she knows. You are better off learning from the book.
Math, Science, Engineering major with straight As - that is until I took this class. I got an F! online homework is worthless and takes forever. Lectures awful. She made us hand copy our lab manual into our notebooks. Tests full of mistakes, and you won't get graded tests back. Not enough hours in a week to even attempt to get a good grade.
I dropped her class but people who had an average of a D or C ended up getting an A for the final grade. She curves VERY GENEROUSLY! No matter how many times you ask her if she curves, she will always say NO; but she always does in the end. I didn't know that until I dropped the class. Willing to help if you see her individually but TESTS ARE HARD!
Extremely nice lady. She tests you pretty thoroughly, and a lot of the things she doesn't fully cover or explain properly. However, she gives homework and many extra credit quizzes and worksheets. If you put your best effort in doing these, you will receive an easy A.Oh did i mention that she gives a really fat curve, so don't ever drop her class.
Lectures are very unclear, so you NEED TO READ the material, do practice problems, and seek out help when you need it. Gives lots of extra credit, so passing the class might not be hard, but if you want a good foundation in chemistry, you have to really take initiative to learn on your own get help. Working with other students helps : )
I am disappointed with this professor Pros: Take home extra credit quiz (only 3) Cons: Poor handwriting Forgets to display notes on overhead when showing work (very common) She basically reads off the powerpoint (lectures seem pointless) Her explanation is choppy Tons of homework I would not recommend this teacher
She is one of the nicest prof. The class is very demanding and I had to do lots of learning by myself (ie reading, HWs, WS). lectures covers the simplest idea of the chapter, but the tests actually covers more than the lectures. Have to read the book! Basically, its a tough class and you have to put in a lot of work. Also, expensive onIine HW 8(
I scored a 90, 98, and 70. I averaged an 86 on all three test. She offers 40 points in extra credit. We also got additional 48 points on quizzes. quiz is really hard. I got 102100 because of 48 points extra credit. Its not hard to get A. 88% is A. Take the class. 80 points in extra credit. People who got D+C- average on test ended up with a B.
Not clear most of the time; you may need to ask for help/clarification during/after lectures as well as do your own studying. Read BEFORE lecture so you have questions for her. We fell behind schedule & needed to push her for quizzes(worth extra points). Tests are hard if you don't 100% understand conceptually. Overall, bleh teacher but fair class.
Although not the best chem professor IMO, Lo is very knowledgeable. She offers extra credit and, oftentimes, gives extensions on assignments if enough students ask her or if the "right" person asks at the "right" time. Lectures confused me most of the time, so prepare to teach yourself. Exams can be frustrating. She packs in a lot of questions.
She is absolutely the worst teacher in De Anza. She does not know what she is talking about in class and gives extremely hard exams and sometimes even tries to change the syllabus. She literally pushed the midterm to a week before the finals. Also she just pushed me away when I asked her to recheck a question which I was supposed to get correct.
She has a really confused announcement to student. She never tell exactly the range of the exams, quizzes. Her exams are totally different from the format either online homework or her lectures. YOU MUST STUDY BY YOURSELF.
I was very busy taking other classes and still put a lot of effort in this class learning everything by myself as she didn't teach anything during the lecture. Even after all the effort, all she wants is making students suffer through meaningless memorization and wasting time. I didn't learn anything about chemistry, I memorized everything.
She is a nice person but a really horrible teacher. Sometimes I am very sure she does not know what she is teaching although she is very knowledgeable about chemistry. She makes you hand write the whole prelab which is very time consuming. Her tests are super hard but she offers some extra credit
I've always received As in other classes for two years as I'm a passionate student. I took this class hoping that I will learn about chemistry. I worked very hard only to meet her expectations which is pure memorization and zero understanding in chemistry what so ever. You will fail the class if you are honest and care about learning. You are welco
This class literally takes knowledge out of your brain. I don't really write reviews on professors like this because I'm very busy and do not have time to think about minor things. However, this professor really enjoys playing with students situations and their grades. If she doesn't like you, she will give you bad grades. very very subjective.
This is a very doable class. She does her best to give you the knowledge. Some students are too caught up with themselves, and think she is bad. The truth is that these students just don't adapt to the teacher that she is. She is very good for individual help, and always thinks about us. Self-study is important to success. Be a scholar.
Worst Chemistry Professor at De Anza! Never ever take her class!!! Never!!!
I am chemistry major, and I tell you: Don't take her class!!! Worst chemistry professor I have ever experienced!
Absolute worst professor I have experienced at DE ANZA. Usually I don't like to rip on professors, but this guy deserves it. Her lectures were confusing, and she wasn't helpful. AVOID at all costs.
I spent all my time studying for this class, and I was still teetering on not passing. She requires pre-lecture readings, but teaches methods that goes against the book. She is notorious for giving quizzes on the lecture that she just gave ten minutes prior. Avoid Lo at all costs. She's nice and funny, but lectures are bad and exams are worse.
Her class requires a lot of effort, but she is very willing to take the time out and answer any questions you may have. Unfortunately, I don't think she's used to ALL types of questions that students may ask, perhaps from being a new professor, so be sure the questions you ask are short and precise. Good luck!
She's a very nice person, but as a professor is just difficult. Very disorganized and overcomplicates every concept. Her lectures are so confusing you're better off reading the book and teaching yourself. She is not a generous grader, which is why she offers so much extra credit (exams are long and challenging). I do not recommend her at all.
Chem1A with her was not a great experience. There was so much online homework like 15-25 questions and due every Sunday midnight. Her lecture is confusing and hard to read. Her lab directions were confusing and i felt lost. Midterms were pretty hard. Got 65, 60, 85 % on midterms. I think she curves the class grade, i got a B at the end.
Do not take if you are a DSPS student. She is extremely biased and unfair and there was not much that my counselors were able to do to help me. She never gave me periodic tables on the exams even after i remind her. Bad instructor and extremely high expectations.
Worst professor I have ever takn at De Anza. She is very nice in person but a terrible teacher. Her tests are super hard, and she does not curve. She thinks that just because one person got an A that she is a good teacher and that we are dumb students even if the avg test grade is a 58%. Avoid her at all costs.
She is the worse professor ever! You won't learn anything from her lecture and need to self study. Do not expect to be respected in this class. Your hardship means nothing to her! If you take her class, try to show yourself in a way that she would like you rather be a studious student who put her life to learn!
Run.. Don't look back... don't take any of her classes
She is pretty straightforward in lecture and gives a lot of opportunities to get extra credits. Most of materials will be covered during the lecture time, yet need to put some effort personally, which is based on textbook, as well as focusing on her lecture. You may not listen her voice, so recommend to concentrate and participate assertively. Good
WORST CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR. SHE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOU AND THE CLASS. YOU WIIL NOT LEARN ANYTHING! DO NOT TAKE HER AT ANY COSTS. TAKE DR. GRAY INSTEAD.
So while her rating is low I personally think that she is a fairly easy teacher. She gives so many extra credit opportunities and if you go to her office hours she will explain things. She is a little disorganized and sometimes a little scatterbrained but she is so sweet and adorable. Plus at the end of the quarter she gives a BIG FAT CURVE :)
Very nice Chem1A teacher. But if you don't put time into it, u get nothing and blame for the professor. It's not a hard class, and I definitely learned something from her.
You need to take advantage of her offce hrs which is b4 class. She is super helpful and explains well in person. Her hw is extra credit online, takes sme time but very helpful. If you do those and practice some problems from online worksheets, you're sure to ace it. her tests have become easier over the years. she says that too. easy tests.
She offers so many extra credits for us to make up for our lost scores. Her lecture might seem confusing but if you do online hw and watch some youtube videos to understand, you can easily get an A. Also for lab make sure you're taking notes in evey lab lecture in your lab book- it'll be very helpful to answer questions in lab exams.
If you're taking hard classes and need to take a chemistry course too, definitely take Dr. Lo. She offers lots of EC and exam corrections (only 5 pts though). Her exams aren't too difficult if you pay attention in class, do the worksheets and keep up the material. The class is a bit fast paced, but she's very willing to help during office hours.
Unprofessional, no clear syllabus, doesn't respond and check her emails (2 weeks still hasn't responded). Docks off points for no reason and accuses you of copying/cheating. I've been here for 2 years and have taken other STEM classes, this was THE WORST out of everything. Lectures are pointless. Don't waste your time and money.
She accused me of cheating/copying and pointed out things that weren't wrong when I asked what I could improve to get a higher grade. Doesn't know her chemistry and doesn't know how to teach. Lectures are useless. A lot of self-studying. She has no idea how to conduct a class and lab. AVOID at all cost.
I can honestly say I didn't learn one thing from her that quarter. Lecture was useless. She uses a projector and writes on a paper, and 80% of the time, the paper isn't even shown on the screen. You just see her hand. You will get an F on everything, but she offered us 150 points of extra credit, so if you do all of it, you will get a good grade.
I've taken this class twice, failing it each time, despite doing all of the homework, labs, reports and online extra credit. This is warning from me to you, don't let your GPA suffer and avoid this professor at all costs. I was a bio major but I changed to cs after failing her course for the 2nd time.
Billie is a sweet lady. With that being said, she does NOT know how to teach! Exams are VERY difficult but she does give a lot of EC. To be honest you would probably do better teaching yourself from the textbook. Even when I asked for a clear explanation it was still difficult to understand the material...
Her teaching style is v unclear, so you never know what to expect on quizzes or tests, even if you self-teach from the textbook. For lab reports, her grading requirements also unclear & she doesn't tell us what she expects until after she deducts points for no reason. For example, I had all the correct info in a report but she still took points off
Don't take her. Can't understand what she is saying 75% of the time during lectures. SELF STUDY CLASS.
She never tells you what your grade is during the quarter. The worst teacher I have ever taken. Negative and doesn't give you any good feedback besides saying "You didn't study" You can never understand what she is saying during the lecture. Exams are way too hard. If you take her, I wish you the best of luck cause this class is a living nightmare
Professor Billie Lo isn't the best teacher, but she puts a lot of effort into her class. Despite what the other students said, she shows us our grades during every lab session. Her exams are challenging, but so is college in general. I personally leave her lectures confused as well, but I think it is possible to get good grades if you study smart.
The tests are really hard and she can get really rude at times. Not to mention how ridiculously disorganized she is. Don't take her if you have a choice. She will own your life for those 12 weeks you have her. Total nightmare experience.
Do yourself a favor and don't take any classes with Dr. Lo. Even if you'll have to wait a quarter to take it with a different professor, do it! One of the worst teachers I've ever had. Her exams are almost impossible to pass. More than half my class dropped out. Im barely making it myself and I am usually a A/B student.
I had never taken Chem before taking this class. I sat in the back and didn't pay attention to anything she said and still got an A. Basically I self-studied. The tests were somewhat difficult, but she does curve it by 10-30 points so it isn't too bad. The only thing I wasn't too happy about was losing random points on labs for no reason.
I took her Chem 1A during the first COVID-19 shut down quarter, so she was particularly unorganized. Chemistry is challenging for her to teach online, so a LOT of us were confused all quarter. She frequently changed due dates at the last minute, causing tons of stress. You may not want to take her online if you haven't already mastered chem basics.
Tried giving her the benefit of the doubt due to COVID/lack of technology experience. However, most disorganized class EVER. Lectures, canvas, exams, labs A MESS!! TAUGHT MYSELF EVERYTHING! She kept saying grades don't matter but CMON! This is a class that most student's future depend on! I expect more out of de anza! 2 stars bc she might give curve!
DONT EVER TAKE BILLIE LO. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
Key to success in her class? Don't listen to a word she says. Ignore her lectures, ignore basically everything she says. In other words study on your own. Her instructions are always a mess and often contradictory, so be prepared to argue with her about your grade. Everything in this class is disorganized as all hell.
She does not adhere to her students' needs. Inconsiderate and disorganized. Instructions are unclear and everything on the syllabus goes out the window because she does things "her way." In addition, this Professor makes you feel regret for asking her genuine concerns and questions because she gets defensive. Think long and hard before taking her.
As a human, shes genuine and a nice person. During lectures she will answer any questions you have. Thats about the only positive I can give. As a teacher shes one of the worst I encountered and even worse for exams. Its almost impossible to finish exams with an hr for 14 questions. I would avoid this teacher unless you are a Chem expert
Shes a terrible teacher who gives exams in an impossible time frame to finish where the average grade for the final exam was 64% and the average grade for our lab final was 52%. Its just not possible to do good in this class unless you are a chemistry god. Her lectures are confusing and she goes all over the place. For your gpa don't take her ever.
For the people who said she curves. That was not the case for the summer quarter. if you bombed the midterms and final, you could maybe pass with a C but theres no way you could get an A or anything close to an A, even a B is a reach in her class. The people who don't end up dropping the class are made up of chem gods, leave if you aren't one.
Unless you are a chemistry expert, your chances of doing good, let alone pass the class is very slim and passing the class is somewhat of a reach if you struggle with chemistry even a little bit. If your brave enough to take this class, set your expectations extremely low and set your grade expectations even lower because your gpa will take a hit.
had our exam 15 questns 1hr & techdifficulties she has during exam, some questions there were these images as part of m.c ? but they didn't appear during test Some questions she had would take more than 4 minutes to ans hope she'd consider the time & type of questions to ask otherwise I believe its unfair. I don't understand any of her lecture
grading is unclear, on my exam she thought that I copied and cheated because she said that my hand writing is neat( but since I used iPad's notability it makes writing somewhat nicer) and so after my final she had me on zoom and questioned me for over an hour; where she asked me ? from final exam what the process to solve? I thought this was unfair
The one good thing about Lo is that she curves heavilyother than that, get ready to be belittled for answering incorrectly, called out for being absent, etc., unless you're a favorite. I think that she doesn't understand how to properly teach or address students with empathyshe said that she learned most of this stuff in grade school.
EXAMS ARE PROCTORED. Exhausting course work that clearly makes no sense. Modules that are put up make no sense whatsoever. Accuses many people of cheating. Exams aren't the most challenging but work must be shown all the time. Some links that are put up by her rarely work. The time things are due change often without any warning. DON'T TAKE HER!!!!
Teacher is extremely difficult to follow and confusing in her lectures. She is very hypocritical in a sense that she calls out students for things like wasting time but does the same thing during class. There will be many times in which you would wonder if even the teacher knows what she's teaching. Insensitive, confusing, & boring DONT TAKE HER!!
Do not take this professor. I took her for credit because there were no other teachers teaching Chem 1b. Her lectures do not make any sense, her tests are confusing, hard, and misleading, and you will basically be self-teaching yourself the course so you will have to spend a lot of time studying if you want to pass her class.
