Very tricky and difficult multiple choice questions. No homework, but you really have to understand the chapter and Reader guide before before his lectures. Only 3 exams and doesn't really curve grades. High rate of students failing.
You will probabely fail the class.
He is extremely hard. His exam questions are time consuming and very difficult. He's a nice guy but way too hard.
Summer03, pretty easy class if you do HW probs & listen to his lecture, class is composed of 25%quizes,35%midterm,40%cumulative final. for summer quizes is not pop just every class (mulitple choice w/xtra credit probs), final was more difficult than other
Summer Class. Quizzes everyday. Tests use questions straight from quiz. No surprises at all. Loved to answer questions.
Excellent - Really explained things well, gives you all the formulas and tables you need on tests and quizzes, if you pay attention in class you will do great!
took it in the summer. quiz is kinda hard but if you study you will do ok. test is not a joke...STUDY!!!...i didnt put that much effort in the class but still got a C.
Good summer course. He gave extra credit on quizzes and tests. Do the homework! Good at explaining in class, lousy in the office.
Don't listen to the hype...he's not all that bad once you get to know him. He's not out to get you, despite the rumors, and makes the subject matter crystal clear. You must, however, pay attention
This teacher is extremely rude and will pick on you if he gets a chance. Don't leave the room whatsoever, even to go to the bathroom or else he will embarrass you. He has no concern for his students.
This is an extremely hard class. You have to study your ass off in order to pass. He will work you. And if you slack off, you will take it again. But you will learn. Good class, good teacher. Not easy, but good class.
Very hard class overall, but you can learn alot from his class. He's a great lecturer since he shows you how to do the problems. His test is extremely hard because the multiple choice weight alot & he did not talk much about it. Study hard if take this
Exams are difficult and LONG! Do the problems first and you should be okay. Prof can be intimidating at times but thats how he is. Don't leave the classroom during lecture - he can get pissy about it!
Hard class, but he explains things very well. Will give helpful techniques that are not in the book. Problem part of tests pretty easy, multiple choice can get ridiculously hard. focus on concepts. Good teacher for tough material
Feb 3: his lecture consited of selling the most recent text and course reader, setting boundries, shotgun questioning students, imposing his liguistic preference (hey y'all), covering very little of 3 chapters, and assigning homework and a self quiz. ouch
very difficult class!
Tests are hard!
Only people complaining about this class are the people who can't cut it. He REALLY HELPS if you ask and DOES SO. And he teaches fast. People come into class expecting him to teach basic math?!? Psst, the secret to graduating is to STUDY!!!
The problem portion of the tests are like the problems he assigns - mainly like the problems he does on the board. This counts for third of the grade. Rest is tough MC based on your understanding of the concepts he discusses. 2MT=30% each, Final=40%
The best 173A professor PERIOD! The material is tough as it should be because its INTERMEDIATE FINANCE. His exams are CHALLENGING especially the MC's. Explains things very thorougly, probably the most knowledgeable prof in CALI!
This guy taught me nothing, so if you like to teach yourself everything, he is fine. I am not afraid of hard work and I got an A, so I am not a p*ssed off student. This guys really does suck
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. Very bad teacher who does not teach students mainly talks to the white board. Summer session is the worst, he quizzes every night based on chapters he just lectured on. Quizzes worth a huge percent of your grade (25%).
Quite possibly the worst teacher in the world. can't teach AT ALL!! just does some homework problems on the board, gives quizzes and midterms and a final, then fails you. he also has a weird thing about touching guys in the class. AVOID HIM BIG TIME!!!
Worst teacher in the world, no help, just wants to fail students, can't teach worth a lick! avoid at all costs
Maybe it's because summer session is so fast, but all Campsey did was just goes over the chapter problems (very quickly) every class and then you have quizzes, mid-term and final. He should spend more time explaining how problems relate in real world.
Those who are complaining about the difficulty probably expected to fed the information. I personally thought that Campsey was helpful, but went through the material very fast. Be prepared to spend a lot of time out of class studying.
"THOSE WHO CAN DO, THOSE WHO CAN'T TEACH" OR AT LEAST TRY TO! THIS GUY DIDN'T EXPLAIN ONE THING DURING THE ENTIRE SEMESTER. BASICALLY RACED THROUGH A FEW HW PROBLEMS ON THE BOARD, QUIZZED US AND FAILED MOST, THANKS FOR NOTHING CAMPSY!!
he is rude to students who walk in and out during the class period even because of emergency; he may drop you, ask you to stay outside until break then come in, or at least make you embarrase in front of class.
there are people who act nice but are devious and there are people who are devious but has a good heart. Campsey is definately the fake type, and he doesnt care for the students. He acts like he does but he doesnt
Hard. Didn't like him. Didn't like the way he pretends to be helpful. Some of my classmates just gave up the final exam. I stuck in there, didn't think he woulf give me an F.
I got good grade but I didn't learn much from him. As people said, he only tought the white board how to solve hw problems and quiz. He really should have explained rules before solving problems. He was rude and mean to late and in-n-out students. I would answer if you ask questions. D was the AVE.
I THOUGHT THAT DR CAMPSEY DID CARE ABOUT STUDENTS. HE WAS INTERESTED IN THE SUBJECT, TOO.IF YOU DID THE WORK, YOU DID WELL IN THE CLASS. LAZY OR TARDY STUDENTS DESERVED TO BE MADE AN EXAMPLE OF. THEY WERE DISRUPTIVE.
This course covers quite a bit. Many students have had to repeat (Hey Billy-- you should break it up into 2 courses) Not for the faint of heart or those taking QBA. Can't recommend him at this time :(
Sit in the front row! He uses up ALL of the white board. I took a summer course, which was more demanding. Just do all the hw assignments before class the next day to understand what is going on.
B.J is a great prof! He covers the material quickly. If you do the quizzes (not graded) and h/w, you will get a B or better. Show up on time, and be prepared to answer questions - that is how you get on his good side. I learned a lot from his course, and he is very approachable outside of class.
A lot of people complain that Campsey is too hard, but they hardly show up to class or show up with little interest in learning. If you show up with interest, prepared, the class is not too tough. Interest in teaching the subject and help you a lot in analyzing the topics.
He is very nice guy if you go to talk to him. His exam is not too hard. I don't understand why lots of students keep failing.

Very good and fair professor. The grade you got is the grade you EARNED. Anyone who complains about how tough this class is is not prepared for an upper division finance course. Stop complaing about the grade he "gave" you and start studying. The ave. grade in the class isn't a D, it's a C or C-
This instructor is very nice if you speak with him in person or over the phone. I was hesitant about the class, but he is Okay.
This is a hard class i got to admit. But this professor makes it easy on you i guess. Those that complain cannot understand the fact that they have to try to pass a hard class. If i had to take anymore finance classes, it would be with him.
moron of a teacher, incredibly boring and makes a bad class even worse. stay away.
He does not like to use fin calculators, he rather uses tables. Tests are very hard. You need to study very hard but that's why you are in school, so don't complain! Hard class but worth it,if you are willing to put your effort into it.
Very good teacher, knows the stuff. Always very helpful and interested in the material. All you need to do is the homework, and understand the concepts (for the M/C). His exams are fair based on material in class. Strongly recommended...

Learned so much from him? Or on your own because he didnt teach us a damn thing. This class is really hard and campsey makes it even worst. Good luck, beacause many students didn't pass.
Very hard exam difficult to finish in an hour and fifteen.
You will really learn finance in this class. But if your working and taking full units this class may be a bit overwhelming. Test are almost impossible to finish in the allocated amount of time. I agree with everyone else that MANY students had to retake this class.
If you miss elementary school, Campsey is the professor for you. He doesn't give bathroom breaks or let you leave during class session. He likes to embarassed and scared off the students. Fortunately, he tries to pass all the student just as long as you show improvement. Just study hard!!
a strong coherent between class lecture, hw, quizes, and exams. pay attention, do hw and quiz although he does not collect them, you should get a good grade. does not demand any project or group work. explain things very clearly; however, does not lecture on concepts, but test on them. Nice Prof.
Hard Class if you dont study! I put in 30hrs for both midterms, received 96/100 on 1st & 88/100 on 2nd. STUDY is the key! Really nice & helpful guy if u go see him although he looks intimidating. Tests inc. MCQ Conceptual & Fill-In for math portion. MCQ xtremely hard, read chapter slowly. I got A in Class putting Lots of Effort and sleepless nite.
A very knowledgeable professor! Finance courses require math background. Tips: write fomulars that is not on the fomular sheet he supplies but is used to solve quiz/hw probles on a piece of paper. Use it on your exam cz exams are based on quiz and hw. Never try to shrank the book into a page, cz U won't have time to read it.
He talks too fast. Is not a good lecturer and even though he has good intetions, he doesn't care about whether or not a student actually understands it. Too much into giving problems w/ formulas.
I struggled with this class all along. Everything seemed so difficult and i kind of learn things on my own. Dr. Campsey seems to think we are all following him, but most of us are lost when he goes into his own "world" and forgets we exist. Deep inside he has a good heart, and he is very smart!!
shows interests n displine in the class. not to allow to leave the seats during the class! seems very organized about what he's teaching, but actually it's just the basic, didn't go deep at all. His exams r soooo deep that will make u drawn in his exams. if i'm not graduating senior, i couldn't survive in his class.
For those who aren't a finance major it may be tough. He gives a quiz every class, but it helps to prepare for exams. Really understand the HW & quizes & ask lots of questions! Also know terms not just equations. Exams are mulitple choice but have 8 problems to solve. Nice guy but really do your work!
I recently took his class last Spring and practically had no life bc of all the studying I had to do. I didn't understand a damn thing he taught in class. Tough teacher. I passed his class with a B learning everything from my bf outside of class.
You are DEAD. you have no choice but to take 173 with him. Do not, not, not take him if you have another option, but you know what, you have no other choice, so GOOD LUCK! He is the most difficult teacher ever. He is so bitter, not very helpfull, and thinks he is funny, but he is not, at all!
This class seems very intimidating at first. He warns you that it is difficult from the get go and his first few lectures/examples make you wish you'd believed him and dropped. But as the class progresses the material becomes easier to understand-with ample studying and paying attention as he does the problems. He surprised us by dropping some quizes.
do not take this man i repeat do not take him. he is the most difficult teacher in finance at sjsu. the way he teaches everything is the LONG HARD WAY. if you can take another teacher i strongly advise you to do so. if you have to wait till next semester do so also and do yourself a favor.
GOOD LUCK!!! His class is way off base ....He thinks that he is teaching you, but all he is doing is pissing everyone off. He says his tests test you on what you are supposed to know...but all they do is confuse you and trick you. If you are a finance major you are dead, because he is the only one that teaches this class.
Yes, he is a hard teacher. Yes, he is tricky. Yes, it is a tough class. But guess what, he is the only one teaching it for the majority of the semesters. So if you're one of those seniors, like me last spring '05,who had no choice but to take his class in order to graduate then just suck it up and kiss your weekends goodbye. Study hard, and pass.
This class may be hard, but so is all the other sections of 170; so stop complaining. Just get a Ti-83+ calculator and study the finance section on the manual of that thing for midterms (TVM & Cash flows). I did that and got an A in the course. On the 1 page cheat sheet, just take it from the book as his multiple choice portion is tricky.
Look, if you come to class, do the homework, and study, you will be fine. If you have a hard time in this class and repeatedly fail it, it might be time to switch to Marketing. The material is hard but Campsey knows his stuff, and if you are serious about the class, you will know your stuff too.
Campsey is not all that bad, all you have to do is grab all the midterms from the past and study them closely.... if u cant pass doing that then u might as well switch majors to stupidology.
campsey is hard, but doable. to succeed you MUST go to class, do the quizes/hw, read the book, and study hard. if you dont put in the time, you will not get a good grade. campsey tells lots of bad jokes and can be annoying. will call on you in class whether you know the answer or not. the only prof harder is tom black.
I've never seen anyone write as fast as him, he talks fast too .. going to his class is worthless and studying on your own, based on his course packet is key .. his exams are similar to quizzes. More than half of his students fail but he'll feel bad and he'll most likely pass you the 2nd time if you get close enough. Good luck .. you'll need it.
Happiest C of my life. Very very tough if you don't know everything in the course. About 15 MC questions and 5 questions each midterm. Previous midterms help but he will change a few problems and multiple choice. He'll pass you as long as you improve.
Hardest teacher ever. Teaching style is not desirable. You must really try to understand the material before you go to class. Must not slack at all in class. If there is another professor available, take him/her. test are grad. level hard. grades on improvment.
Style: Will only work problems in class unless you ask questions (IOW: ask questions). Fair grader - you will get what you deserve. For an A-C: study text and reader BEFORE class (>3hr study/wk), practice the assigned problems/quick quizzes (VERY similar to exams), ask questions. PAINFUL course if you don't do any one of the above.
Man this guy almost gave me a heart attack. I had to completely restructure my study habits and strategy, which means cramming is out of the question. My advice, put in that desk time. Dont just practice problems learn the material and its relationships and how to manipulate it, you'll need it for the M/C. Most of all, DO NOT SCREW UP the 1st exam.
I learned more in 3 weeks in Prof. Campsey's class during intersession than I did in 4 months in another Prof's class who is supposedly "easy". I found Prof Campsey easy to understand and approach for help. I liked his tests and grading system.
I like finance, I do. This guy made me NOT like it anymore. Take Harjoto for 170. DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY. Unhelpful, unclear, won't let you leave class even to go to the bathroom. Expects everyone is a finance major. 2 MT, 1 comp. Final and no HW. This guy really sucks, take someone else by all means
He is really cute with his Texas accent. I took him during the winter, and it was really intense but finished the course in 13days!Covered 2 chapters every day+quiz every day even on the first day of class there was a quiz. My suggestion is to read chpts before coming to class and ask questions! He is helpful, but his exams are tough so do your hw!
This course was difficult because of the sheer volume and depth of material covered. I managed to pull off a B grade, by always staying on top of chapter readings, doing homework, and understanding the material. Campsy has his good qualities, but sometimes the students seemed intimidated by the nature of the class. I would take his course again.
This was one of the hardests classes that I have ever taken. I have never studied more for anyother class. Campsey is a good professor, but he goes really fast. You must keep up with the readings and the quizzes and you have to study...I mean REALLY study for his tests.
The material is difficult but he teaches it very well! I learned a lot!!! Follow his class problem examples on the midterms and finals you'll do good! I ended up with an A. Expects you to master the concepts he covers. GOOD PROFESSOR.
Get ready because this is a real college finance class. The material itself is not hard, but it does require going to class, understanding the chapters, listening to lecture and DOING Homework! Overall a good class. Difficult but workable. I struggled and put most my time into studying for this class. Goodluck! He is not as hard as other people say
Use chapter exercises to teach material (so it depends on your learning style), expect you to know the material a little bit before class. 3 exams are very fair, nothing unpredictable if you understand the material, take the quizzes. Could encourage more student participation to make the class more interesting.
Worse teacher I've ever had. He's just a human solution manual. Learned everything myself & just went to class to get tips on how to solve his problems. His exams were HARD just like his prac quizzes. Grade is based on 2 midterms & final. No HW, nothing. However, if u show any improvement at all, he will pass u. I got 2 Ds & must have pulled a C in
One of worst I have had in the MBA program. Forget his lectures, he does not know how to give them. Seems like he does not want to be there and that students are something that he must put up with. Tries to be funny but fails at that as he fails to be able to give a coherent lecture.
Campsey is a hard teacher, but you will learn!!

I had a lot of expectations on this class. Typically teaches stuff from the book. Doesn't talk about how the theory in the book applies to real life. Comes very prepared to every class - starts writing on the board the moment he comes in. No interest in "teaching" his students. Tenured Prof. He just goes about doing his stuff in a robot like fashio

Really good teacher. You will learn more in this class than all of your other finance classes. Yes the notion is he is hard, U do have to study... but it is very dueable! Just dont be a Typical lazy sjsu student and you will be fine. If ure typical student who doesnt want to learn and just attempts to breeze thru college with a min grade forget it.
Gotta Study like never be4.. but if you do it will pay off as his tests come from reading and classwork/hw/qquizes.. He gives you ample multiple choice practice problems.. if you actually work them out and figure out how to get the answer you will be fine in the clas.. if you don't you will be screwed on the midterms
Works out many problems with his calculator in front of you.. has a nice course reader.. if you work and study hard you can achieve an a! Definately don't take the class lightly and put of studying till the end... stay on top of the class and you will do fine.
Best Finance class SJSU has to offer.. Learned a lot.. Gotta study but if you stay on top you do study your ass of you have a good chance of getting an A! Goodluck!
Definitely agree with the previous rating, his tests are hard, he's tough, but he gives you all the chances to study for it. He does the problems over and over on the board until you get it, he has everything written out in the course reader, the only reason to fail is you didn't study. Great porfessor, one of the smartest people !
You will learn more in Campsey's 173A class than every other Finance class combined. No joke. He knows the material inside and out. Take this class before every other Finance elective and they will be a breeze. If you fail this class you should switch to Marketing or Management.
WOW. I'm still sweating from all the studying I had did for the final. This class is no joke; probably the hardest I have taken here at SJSU. The hard part is not the material, but his tests. They are confusing as hell. Whats worst, 3 tests make your whole grade. So make sure you prepare well!
Very good teacher. 173a is a very hard class period. I see Vourokoski is teaching 173A in spring 2007...DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FROM HER. Beg or plead but take 173A from Campsey. If you do well in this class the other finance classes will b easy. You must study the material, if I can pass this class anybody can.
Simply the best Finance professor at SJSU. I learnt more in Dr. Campsey's class than in all my Finance classes. For all of those who say that he is tough, they just don't do the homework, quizzes or come to class. He's very helpful if only YOU ASK! You need to show to class and pay attention, you can dose off in this one. Ended up with an A.
Dr. Campsey is one tough Son of a Gun. Howeve you learn a lot in his class. If you want a easy professor dont take Campsey.
Great Teacher. Learn so much. He gives you a real good course reader that has everything you need in class... Study hard... Real hard.. and you will be fine
Great Professor. You have to attend his lectures to understand what is going on. Once you understand the theory....You're Golden!
yes, test is very hard. i did study very hard but i don't know why, i couldn't do well on his test. the test is very compusing. if you want to pass this class i don't thik this teacher is the right one for you.
very hard class and exams. failed
his midterms are extremely hard and the multiple choice questions are very confusing and they are 60%/100 of the tests. if you do badly on the multiple choice, you will fail the test.
Multiple Choice is 45% of mid terms and final. You must be able to do m/c in order to pass class. Tough class. Figure out how to do m/c and you should be fine.
Very stupid teacher I never had in SJSU. He is not very interested to teach, and does not care about his students at all. I get B- for my two midterm, and D- for my final, he failed me. If you really need this class, better take with somebody.
The key to Campsey is NOT to do well on your two midterms. He rewards improvement therefore put all your eggs into the final. If you do well on the two midterms and screw up on the final its over. Got D's on my two MT and did well on final got a C+
His class is tough, but if you are good at math, it is no problem. He enforces you to remember the formula and apply them in problems, which is very good. I personally like his teaching style. Much better than Anu V.'s class. She is horrible!!! I am expecting to get an A in Campsey's class. Yohooo... Practice and practice, you will be fine...
This guy is all smiles and sunshine then he stabs you in the back when he grades. He doesn't explain well, his test cover what he didn't mention, and he grades differently from student to student. The only way to an A is to have a PHD. Remember, calculation errors/typos show you have no grasp of the material so no partial points!
Very good professor. teaches very well and clearly. easy class if you pay attention and read the book and do the hw. also, fin calc is a must!! got an A (summer section). highly recommend
Retook this class w/ Campsey over the summer. Recommend taking him over the summer. Class attendance is a must. You have to put a lot of time into the class in order to pass. Subject is difficult. Learn and memorize how to do the probs. and you will do fine. No way in slacking and passing. Take Campsey. DO NOT take Reza.
Great Teacher! Speaks very clear. Make sure you can understand the class. Pace is moderate. But you have to work very hard to make sure you understand the material, and well prepare for the exams and quizes. I took his 173A in summer, and Ace all the quizes and exams, ended up with a A+.

Excellent professor. You will learn a lot. Just attend all the classes and do not miss a single. Do your homework and do not fall behind. Keep yourself ready for next class. It’s not an easy class you need to put lot of efforts. But Dr. Campsey is really helpful if you want to learn. I got A+ and i really worked hard.
he is a good profeesor. u will learn a lot in his class. ended up getting A in summer. highly recommend.
Dr. Campsey is probably the most difficult finance professor but not impossible. My recommendation is to do the quizzes and review the homework before each class day. If you do well on the final, he will pass you regardless if you failed both midterms. I suggest that you try your best to prepare for the midterms because the final is not easy.
Make sure to go over the reader and past exams. The multiple choice on the exams are difficult, but Prof. Campsey helps you to grasp the concepts. I got an A on the first exam, but a D+ on the second midterm. I studied a lot for the final, and ended up getting an A. Make sure to show improvement toward the final. Good luck!
Excellent professor. Very clear, very helpful, makes class interesting. You'll learn tons of useful stuff and feel much smarter at the end of the semester. Exams are easy if your concepts are strong. Highly recommended!
I don't know WHY 173a with campsey has a reputation of being a very hard course.(sjsu students are lazy i guess)just go to class, keep up with the quizzes, study, and u'll do fine. practice from old exams if u can get them. hardest thing is multiple choice the math itself is easy. he grades VERY fair, if u fail 1 test u can still get an A.
Very difficult class, multiple choice questions will drop your grade significantly if you don't get them right. He says he grades on improvement but that's bs. Advice:FAIL both midterms and do well on final. U really have to put tons of time and effort to study and pass with a minimal grade. Stay away and take another teacher! You've been warned!
I thought Professor Campsey was a great teacher. He assigned a variety of problems and gave a ton of examples to help students understand the materials. He also gave out weekly non-graded quizzes which were very useful. The problems on the exams were very straight forward, but the MC questions were extremely tricky.
Tough class but great teacher. Goes out of his way to help, if you ask. Lecture moves fast, so come prepared. MC on exams is TOUGH(must read the book) Exam problems similar to the course reader and book assignments(not bad) 1 pg of notes for test + he gives you 4 pgs of equations. Not an easy A, but u will definitely learn. DON'T MISS CLASS!
GOOD PROFESSOR CARES ALOT ABOUT HIS STUDENTS AND GOES OUT OF HIS WAY TO HELP HIS STUDENTS. THIS CLASS IS TOUGH REQUIRES ALOT OF WORK. WAY BETTER THAN ANY OTHER FINANCEPROFESSOR AT STATE
Campsey is a good teacher but moves very fast because he knows his stuff. He's got wry southern sense of humor which helps the time pass. Be sure to read before class so you don't get lost. Gives frequent quizes that prep u for the midterms/final and lets you have 1 page of notes to use. Not an easy subject so attendence is a must or u'll fail.
If you want to learn about finance, then take Campsey. You'll have to work hard for your grade, though. MC is HARD! You need to understand the concepts and what is really happening, not just how to do the calculations. Ask questions when you don't understand something. He is VERY helpful.
Dr. Campsey is a good guy and wants students to do well in his class. With that said do think that you can get away with not doing the work. He doesn't really teach he just kind of fills in the blanks you may have come across as you taught yourself the materiel. Never the less a good grade is completely realistic and you can learn a lot.
Most of his quiz and exams comes from the readers as well as his text book. buy text books. his exams are mix with the problem solving and multiple choices. easy on the quiz, hard on the exams. his exams questions are the hardest for the students. even though do the homework assignments and studies the quiz. you might end with D or F in the exams.
Campsey is a nice person but as a teacher I did not find him very effective. His pace is very fast, he skips details and jumps to answers. His comments regarding finance are confusing and do not provide clear answers. Tests contain a lot of really hard multiple choice concept questions. Even if you get all the problems correct, you may miss a lot o
Gives out quizes that are NOT graded but very important so show up. Probs on the mid and final looks exactly like the prob on quizes. MCQ is extremely hard but the ones on the final was pretty easy. Grades on improvement and does curve the class. so if u fail the two first mid and ACE the final u will get an A in his class.
Campsey is very helpful, but you have to put in your share of the work. Read the book, do the HW problems and PRACTICE the quizzes. It is not an easy class, so get ready to study for this class and do not take it lightly. The midterm problems were easy, but you have to know your concepts for the MC. Do the HW and you will be fine.
Does not explain the material and fails to answers questions. His midterms and final are long and impossible to finish. He gives you no idea of what his grading is about. Be careful because he'll tell you that he's going to pass you and then he fails you. Only good thing about his class was the course reader. I would avoid this class at all costs.
This is probably going to be your toughest class ever at SJSU. The raw material covered is overwhelming in conjunction with his pace. MT M/C requires deep understanding of the material and is usually where students screw up. MT problems are tough, but he gives partial credit. FYI, he grades on improvement, which can benefit or hurt you in the end
Say goodbye to your weekends. This isnt a class you can cram for the night before and expect to pass. If your working more than 30 hours a week, consider taking someone else or cutting down on your work hours.
This guy literally is a gatekeeper; weeding out those who aren't worthy of a finance degree. I failed the class and put in a "decent" amount of study, but it just wasn't enough. However, I would still recommend him. If you can pass this class every other finance class will be a joke. Do not take him unless you can dedicate the time. Guess I couldnt
I had a very hard time learning from him; homework first assigned and collected before then lecture the same material. I got a ~50% on the first midterm and failed out of it for medical reasons. Will avoid this teacher in the future.
This professor is very hard. However,if you put in the time and dedication you will learn alot. He Grades on improvement. if you can pass his class any other finance class will be easy. He will push you to the limit with his multiple choice questions.
Campsey is extremely difficult, if you wana get any of the multiple choice right--you have to read the textbook. Do the end of the chapter questions weekly if not daily. You really need 3-4 hours of study per week for this class. Also, put effort on the quiz, and you should be o.k. with his midterm/finals. Lastly, he grades on improvement.
AWESOME professor! Dont need to read book, everything on exams he goes over in class. Easy to get A if you do minimal studying.DEFINITLY Reccomend! TAKE this professor! You will not regret it. Midterms and Finals were easy, group project was doable.Better than any other summer semester professor. TAKE BILLY CAMPSY and you will be set!!!
One word:Easy! This professor is very clear and organized. Pay close attention in lectures to do well on quiz and refer back to quiz to do well on exams. Quiz and exams are not surprise at all. The use of the book is minimum. I used it to do only problems. He was very helpful and clear. Just do your best in each quiz kuz he grades on improvement.
This class is hard and he works very hard to make it easy. He is helpful, knowledgeable, understanding, approachable and really cares for his student's success. His test questions are hard but if you want to learn the concepts, you have to take 173A with Dr. Campsey, but if you want easy "A" do not take him. He only tests you on what he teaches.
This teacher is by far one of the most unfair teachers I've ever had to deal with in my 4 yrs of going to college. I would highly not recommend him but he's he only teacher that teaches 173. He gives insanely long tests and multiple choice questions that are impossible to prepare for. Study for EVERY problem and read EVERY chapter and u might pass
One word: TOUGH!!
Very difficult but fair. He does not lecture too well because he runs through the chapter quite fast. He does not give a lot of examples in order to help you understand how to do the problem. Be prepared to spend A LOT of time studying for this class.
Great, GREAT professor, took the class over the summer and was very impressed at the adaptability of the professor to teach so much in such a short amount of time. Really recommend if you're hardworking and willing to put in the time and not wimp out.
Tough class! Start studying early. Read the book, do the hw and quizzes as much as possible and there is no reason why you can't get a decent grade. Professor tests in a way that you have to have a deep understanding of the concepts and not just generalities. Prepares you for the real world! Very organized and professional. glad to have taken him
The material really isn't that hard if you do what he assigns. Attend class every day, pay attention, do the homeworks and quizzes, youll do fine. Remember he does curve at the end, but its based on the average grade being a 75%
Campsey covers the material very quickly in class, so it's easy to get lost. Be sure to read the textbook and do the chapter problems. Exams are half math & mc. MC is very tricky, so go to class and read the book. The math portion is easy. Just stay on top of things by reading, reviewing quizzes, and doing hw in the textbook & course reader.
Challenging but fair. Willing to help all the time. Lectures pretty fast. Math problems on tests are similar to quiz but MC is difficult and is 3 pts each so you def want to get at least half right or else you will get low score even if you did well on math part. Grades on improvement so if you steadily get better score on each test and final
Definitely need to attend class. Two midterms and one cumulative final. Do not procrastinate studying. Don't even bother to get the book I never opened it. Go off his course reader and Quick Quizzes. For the final study your past tests. He is extremely open to questions and is very willing to help in any way he can.
Two midterms, one final. By no means easy, but you'll LEARN. Attend lectures for (non-graded) Quick Quizzes. Those are essential to study. MC is tough, but you can make up the points by showing your work on math questions. Test average 65%, taken into account at semester end. Final is a rehash of the midterms. Pay attention and STUDY.
Taking 173A with Campsey was one of the greatest Decisions I've made at SJSU. You'll learn a tremendous amount from him. Going in to office hours and asking for help is a must. Read the book to get the MC on the test. Problems are like quick quizzes. Great Professor overall and knows a lot. Very friendly and wants to see you succeed
Taking 173A with Campsey was one of the greatest Decisions I've made. You'll learn a tremendous amount from him. Going in to office hours and asking for help is a must. Read the book to get the MC on the test. Problems are like quick quizzes. Great Professor overall and knows a lot. Very friendly and is there for you. Go in and talk with him
He is a great teacher , but you need to work hard and I mean hard . You will learn a lot in this class . He will give you problems similar to quizzes in midterms and final , but multiple choice questions are really hard . You need to really understand the material to be able to answer the questions .
This class is not easy. You gotta study a lot yourself cuz his lectures & explanations are pretty vague. However, listening to his lectures is the must in order to do the conceptual questions. There are 3 exams & 1 comprehensive final. Make sure you do all the ungraded quizzes to do well on the tests.
Class consists of 2 midterm and 1 commutative final, assigns take-home quizzes but are not graded. His lecture is all over the place, making it extremely difficult to follow unless you have a real solid background on finance. Study the quizzes and understand the problems if you want to pass! And he has a pet peeve on leaving his class early.
The dude is pretty awesome. He's a nice teacher and he will answer any question you have but if you don't talk you're gonna be in trouble for his class. He's clear with his material and he will help you get that grade but get ready to work or you're not gonna have a good time. DO THE QUICK QUIZZES OR YOU WILL FAIL AND ASK QUESTIONS!!!!!!!
Your final grade is weighted between 3 exams. The quizzes won't be collected nor graded. His lecture is too unorganized to follow so don't even pay attention. I suggest writing down everything you could and study at home. Study the quizzes extensively. I find it similar to the exam. This class will Make or Break you. Best of luck.
Campsey grades in an unconventional manner. The class is made up of 3 tests. 2 midterms. 1 final. That's not a lot. To continue with your finance degree you need a "C" or 74% to pass. Not easy if you fail a test. Thankfully he grades on his own curve. Attend class. Do the non graded HW. Try your best and SHOW IMPROVEMENT and you may pass the class.
Professor Campsey is such an intelligent and great professor! Yes, his class is difficult, but remember it is a core finance class! His lectures are very important so come to class! He gives quizzes (not graded) which help SO MUCH for the exams! How much you study will determine what your grade is, so work hard! Would definitely take him again! :)
Excellent but a very tough class! Must attend class, read the book, do HW quizzes. 3 exams, no extra credit. Curves on improvement. He is an amazing teacher and you have to study the material on your own. Gives quizzes but does not grade them only goes over answers in class. You will learn a lot and work very hard. Buy test bank for the book!
Grade is determined my three tests and there not much room to make any error because of that since he only counts the quizzes for a grade in the summer class He is biased and he curves grades based on improvements my suggestion is to purposefully tank the first test and to gradually get a better grade and he will pass you.
Overall Professor Campsey is a real nice guy and approachable and friendly. Unfortunately he is your only option for 173a and it's a required course for graduation. The course is like 170 but more in depth. The class is test heavy as it is as follows, midterm 1 30% midterm 2 30% final 40% and it's cumulative. I recommend doing the quizzes .
Really nice guy, but makes the class extremely difficult. Not doing the quizzes he hands out will result in a low grade, but honestly not that hard to pass. Do the homework and this class won't be as hard. Definitely learned a lot from his class and beware of his exams. Multiple choice is harder than the word problems on his exams.
He is a bad teacher I failed his 173a class and retook it with another teacher this semester and got a B+.
Campsey was not as bad as everyone else had described. Study his quizzes and briefly go through the topics related to the chapters will help prepare you for the midterms.
Worst teacher I have taken at SJSU. He doesn't lecture, minimal office hrs, and you have to self teach yourself. He makes the class harder than it is. I suggest to avoid him if you want to really learn subject. I regret taking him and wasting a semester. Even if you do the quizzes, you need someone to explain conceptually to fully understand.
Hands down the hardest finance class you will take. His test questions can be tricky so you really have to know your stuff. Study the quizzes and read the book thoroughly to do well. Overall, difficult professor but it's doable you just need to study.. a lot.
Overall terrible professor. Had to teach myself everything because all he does is write answers on the board and covers them while writing so its hard to keep up. I am a graduating senior and I can say that he is so far the worst professor I've had throughout my college career.
This class is definitely the hardest youll take as a finance major, got a 67 on the first midterm, a 77 on the 2nd one and managed to get a B overall, beware of the multiple choice, but the problems are like the ones on the quizzes he hands out so class is mandatory. Definitely the better professor for this class since he curves on improvement.
He assigns homework problems and quizzes which aren't graded but used for practice. If you don't do them you will fail! He expects you do them both before class because all he does is go over the problems really fast until someone asks a question. He does call on people. 2 midterms 1 final. Grades on improvement. REALLY need to try hard to pass.
Best professor out of the two in 173A. I recommend taking this professor because he is very easy and genuinely helps students learn the concepts.
Okay professor, a little old fashioned but his teaching style is pretty helpful and getting a good grade in the class is not difficult as long you just study the quizzes he hands out. The exam is basically like the quizzes, and the quizzes are gone over in class so try not to miss them. Other than that, great professor and helpful class!
Easiest professor for 173A, be sure to take him. Just pay attention to the lecture and every midterm is pretty easy. Really straightforward on the concepts. Also be sure to show up if you can but its okay if you don't. Most of the stuff you learn in class is in the exams. I skipped ever so often and I still passed with an A. Easy class overall.
A lot of emphasis on the textbook, but not really required. I barely showed up to class and still passed with a high B and he said he could round me up during his office hours! There are two 173A professors on campus I believe, and Campsey is the easier of the two.
Easiest prof for 173A. His lectures were straightforward and really easy to follow. He uploads them so you don't need to even go to class. He gives study guides for exams and if you study from them, the exams are an easy A. I showed up only for the exams and passed the class with an A. Little to no homework as well. Must take prof for 173A.
This class was a joy to take. I really learned a lot and the material was easy to digest. The exams were not hard at all, as long as you put in some time to review notes you will get an A. Most of the class did well which says a lot about his teaching style. Out of the 173 professors at SJSU, he's the one to take. Don't miss out!
Interesting class.. At a first glance it may seem pretty hard to pass but I found a strategy to get a good grade at the end. The professor grades on improvement of exams. What I did was get a 30% the first exam, 47% the second exam, and 60% on the final, and I ended up with a B. The system definitely makes it easier for students to pass.
had to work a bit, but worth it. The amount of knowledge I got from the class helped me land a couple interviews with a few staple companies in the finance and accounting realm. Although the class was challenging, it was definitely an easy A and insightful. Would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn but also dont want to stress as much.
enjoyed professor campsey's lectures a lot and definitely gave me a better insight into the world of finance. Class wasn't too hard. Got a C first exam and ended with most likely a B+ due to his curves. Didn't study much since we learned most of it in class
hectic class to say the least, but professor campsey is a funny and caring guy. If you go to his office hours he does the best to help you understand and rounds up for students who go often and seem to care! He has a good attitude towards teaching, but sometimes lectures could go by quickly so make sure to jot everything down!
perfect combination of strictness and ease. He does his best to teach students, but also makes it a bit challenging to test students on the subject. Regardless, his teaching style is the best I've seen on campus so far and definitely helped iron out my skills needed for my career path. Tests/Quizzes were both easy and manageable. thanks! :)
LOL, this class was crazy. He tells a bunch of jokes from lectures to his quizzes and it really makes his class special since you wouldn't get bored from going to lectures. 3 exams, weekly take home non graded quizzes, and no homework. Tests are pretty easy if you study quizzes, since they're exactly the same. Double sided cheat sheet.
solid class. I failed the 173A with the other professor, so I decided to try Campsey the next semester. Much easier overall and passed with a B due to a huge curve he gave at the end.
Easy professor for 173A. I had to retake the class after I failed and took this professor instead. Class was extremely easy and there was no work at all. I showed up once in a while to take notes and to get the study guide. Exams are identical to the study guide, I just memorized and I passed the exam. Take this guy.
Really passionate about the subject and makes class interesting. The exams tested us on the lectures so if you make a good effort to show up and take some notes, you'll pass the exams with an A. No homework either.
Best Finance professor to choose for 173A. Class is stressful but Campsey does a really good job of teaching you the material. As long as you do the take home quizzes and do problems from the Course Reader you will have no trouble passing. Also make the effort going in for help during office hours and he grades BIG on improvement.
I switched out of this class in the 2nd week but had to write a review just for this Instructor. He makes efforts to explain the material very well even though it is a little accelerated. This is a class you don't want to miss, he provides very helpful quizzes and papers to help study. If my semester was not heavy, I would take this class for sure.
as a business management major, I don't know the terms and jargon that goes along with being a finance major so he can go way to fast in explaining. Its only the first 2 weeks and I and my fellow classmates are lost. He doesn't ease into anything. He just starts off firing and never looks back. Take another professor if you aren't good at finance
Professor Campsey is definitely one of the best professors I've had at SJSU so far. He really cares about his students and gives great feedback. Even though the class requires a good amount of studying, Professor makes it as easy as it can be. He was supportive throughout and also prompt in responding to my emails. Take him, wont regret!
Avoid this professor at all costs.
Kindest man ever. He really wants you to succeed in the class. If you put the effort in, you get rewarded for improvement at the end of the semester. Finance is hard but he is a great lecturer & breaks down concepts for us. Always available for questions. Tests are tests & I spent a good 3 days studying for each one. TAKE HIM!
One of the hardest classes I have taken, I am not a Business major, but am hoping to switch. He will definitely make you earn your grade, but he grades on improvement and class averages. You have 2 midterms and 1 cumulative final. READ the textbook, DO the HW, DO the Quizzes. A very challenging class, so don't do my mistake and take 18 units.
Take a different professor!! I've never had a professor who speeds through things like he does. He speeds through everything SO QUICK. He'll start doing problems on the board without even pausing in between or turning around to see if anyone has any questions. Grade is only based on 3 midterms so theres no room to mess up.
He is a good professor he just makes you work for a good grade. The entire class is two midterms and the final. He assigns hw and take home quizzes but they are not graded and only for you to learn. If you show up to class and do the quizzes and HW before class it is really easy. Just put the work in. Very old school, does not use canvas.
Probably the hardest professor I've ever had. My first, and hopefully last, F. He lectures very quickly and doesn't explain concepts in enough detail. I ended up getting lost most of the time even after reading the textbook. There are also no graded assignments and your grade is based on your "improvement" from the first 2 midterms and the final.
No deadlines for anything, expected to come to class having read and understood the material then u do examples in class. I did not do the homework because it wasn't required and it was boring and heavy-reading so i never had any idea what was happening in class. Average score of midterm 1 was 47%. But the professor seems nice and caring.
Class is all based on 2 midterms and final. Professor knows what he is teaching really well. Ask a lot of questions, read the chapters, do the practice problems, do the quizzes, go to class. Material is very heavy and challenging by Campsey teaches the material in the best way a professor could. Going the extra mile for this class will be worth.
He does not explain the class well at all. I felt so lost at points. He only grades your midterms and finals. If you mess up on any of those good luck there is nothing you can do to recover. I had to teach myself this class since he was horrible at it. Worst professor in SJSU
If you are good at teaching yourself really boring things, maybe this class is for you. There are no assignments or anything, your grade is 100% the midterms and final. For someone like me who does not do well with self-paced/teach-yourself-this-boring-material, this was not the class for me. A lot of people in my class dropped/got low grades.
Not bad but not great. He mostly goes over problems in class but goes fast. In order to understand what he's doing or be able to follow along I recommend reading the textbook before class so that you can understand what the formulas/calculations are and why we are doing them. Grade is 100% based on exams. Exams are the same as the practice quizzes
finance is not a easy topic but professor campsey does everything he can to make it easier for us to understand. he grades based only on midterms and the final but the problems he assigns and the quizzes he gives are very similar to those on the exams. you basically have to put in the effort in order to pass. you also get a cheat sheet for exams.
He teaches very fast-paced at first but as long as you look at the assigned problems before class you will start to catch up. There are only three exams that are graded in this class.
Only things that will affect your grade are 2 midterms and 1 final, which is stressful but he does allow for 1 whole printer/notebook paper of notes front and back (write down EVERYTHING btw) Also lectures drag on like crazy but go to class! He covers stuff in very close step by step detail and provides quiz handouts (not graded, just for practice)
His class is graded only on two midterms and a final, but the exams are exactly like the homework and practice quizzes he provides. Be sure to read and put the work in or you will not do well. He is very respectful when it comes to asking questions, so don't be shy to come to him for help if you need it.
I had difficulties with the material, but Professor Campsey was very friendly and welcoming. My biggest regret in the class was not taking advantage of office hours. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS EVEN IF YOU ARE FAILING AND ASK QUESTIONS IN CLASS. Get to know him. As long as you show him effort that you are trying your best, he will cut you some slack.
I love Dr. Campsey! Seriously, one of my favorite professors. He only has 3 exams for the entire class, however, he gives you SO much material to help you. I recommend you buy his course reader and the text book (yes very expensive but worth it). Do ALL of his quick quizzes before class. ASK QUESTIONS! Hes so sweet and loves his work.
Professor Campsey's BUS170 class is challenging, but with effort and use of resources like the textbook and unstuck study, it can be manageable. Attend office hours and ask questions - he's happy to help if you show you're trying.
The entire course you have to teach yourself the concepts because all he does in class is qui
Read the textbook chapters beforehand to understand the conceptual aspect of finance. He gives out quizzes (homework) that are not graded but r the same as the midterms and final. Show up to class and participate!. Not a hard class if you study for the 2 midterms and final. U dont rlly need the course reader.DONT BUY BOOK THERE IS A FREE PDF ONLINE
I had to teach myself the concepts but quizzes and textbook problems are exactly like the exams and you get double sided cheat sheet for exams. Only graded on 2 exams and 1 final. His final grade is based on improvement. I got C on 1st test, B on second and A- on final and ended up with a flat A for my final grade.
Professor Campsey is one of my favorites at SJSU. He gives you a course reader that really helps on the homework and quizzes. He is extremely clear on what you will be tested on and if you do the homework you will do well in the class. His lectures can be a bit difficult but the material is essentially algebra so not too bad.
Do not take this class. You'll be teaching yourself the whole time. Nice guy but everyone struggles on his tests.
So, so important that you read the sections, do the homework and quizzes, and you will succeed on tests and therefore the class.
Do not take this prof for 170, unless you can teach yourself math heavy concepts at home with ease. He goes through practice problems fast and does not explain any steps whatsoever. 3 exams and that is it. Please save yourself, you WILL regret taking this prof. I do not know how the rating isn't lower here, everyone in my class is completely lost.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
You will not use Canvas at all for this course. Everything will be done in class and on the whiteboard. Make sure you go to class; you CANNOT miss unless you trust yourself to learn the material on your own. Everything will be off the textbook, hw, studying, literally everything. You get 3 exams, and that's what you're graded on. That's it.
I would pray that I would get hit by a car walking to his class. Don't take this class, basically self learning and expects you to come to class knowing the material.
