Dr. Flowers is the most effecient, organized, helpful professor I have had to date. His well prepared lectures with easily understood powerpoint presentations presented the class material in a very user friendly manner. I would recommend Dr. Flowers without any reservations. I found him very approachable and willing to help anytime! Great job!
Mabe slightly challenging for some students, but tests are pretty sreight forward, he not going to try and trick you. helpful in office hours. good teacher.
HORRIBLE TEACHER
HORRIBLE TEACHER, he will tell you he'll help you out and won't know how to answer questions directly. Lame class, tests don't pertain to what you learn in class, tries to confuse you. STAY CLEAR of this teacher, unless you want to lower you GPA.
This teacher teaches as if he were in a four year university. With the top fail rate in the college, do yourself a favor try to avoid his class at all costs. Unless of course you have nothing else to do with your life. He is making the college serious money by making people retake this class several times.
Very good professor. I was surprised when I read the other comments about him that said negative things. He is my favorite chem teacher so far. Nice guy, southern gentleman, and gives a take home final. Excellent experience.
TOUGH BUT FAIR. ALWAYS READY TO ANSWER QUESTIONS IN OFFICE. HAS MANY WAYS TO EARN POINTS IN CLASS (LABS, TAKE HOME QUIZZES). IF YOU WANT A HIGH SCHOOL TYPE TEACHER, STAY AWAY. IF YOU WANT TO LEARN SOME COLLEGE CHEMISTRY, HE'S A GREAT PROF.
Material presented in terms of what held accountable for - very straight forward. Billy is very helpful offering ample office hours and answers by email.
Lack of intelligence, useless teacher!
he is a good teacher but doesn't go though the course to well.
Very good professor, helpful and willing to answer questions. Not for those that are hoping for an easy pass. It is not a professor's fault when the type of material they are teaching is difficult for many to understand. The bad reviews are very unjust and are probably from people who did not commit any time to study outside of class.
Good teacher. Very helpful for students who seek it. Very fair and exams reflect information put out. Not a class for those who want an "easy" A. This a truly a "College" level course.
Very intelligent person. Teaching not geared toward beginning chemistry students. Did not lecture from book so book was fairly useless. Often tested on information not yet covered. Did not make information and concepts fully accessible in my opinion.
One of the best teachers at O.C. I wish he taught some of the higher level chemistry. Professional, but not boring. Wonderful teacher!
Smart, engaged, interesting, friendly, and extremely clear in presentation. Provides a thorough notes/slides (with pictures) for students for each section with multiple approaches for each topic. Readily available to help. Don't expect easy, though. Chemistry a is tough subject. Study hard and you'll do fine in his class.
Billy Flowers always seemed rushed and didn't seem to like for students to ask questions. When students did ask question Mr flowers seemed to rush the lab experiments and did not explain them thoroughly. He could be funny at times and I really liked his power point slides and the lecture notes he gave us.
He was mean.
he was nice
This was a very hard class but Dr F is the best teacher I have ever had, he wasted not 1 second of student time he maintained good control of the class and his power points are awesome. He about spoon fed us. I loved this class. Dr. F should teach other instructors about organization! If I was a little younger I'd be a scientist instead of a nurse
To all the negative nellies: maybe you should have studied harder. This teacher was as fair as it gets, I don't even think the guy liked me (which is fine we're not here to make friends) but he treated me fairly and with respect. I think your comments are completely unjustified!
One of the best classes I have ever taken. Showing up, studying and paying attention are the keys to a good grade in this class. Lectures are clear and given to you in print to follow along. He is honest about the difficulty of the class and makes it easy to find assistance. One of the few classes where I feel I got what I paid for.
This class was an absolute pleasure. Expectations could not have been clearer and it was the most highly organized course I've ever taken. Billy demonstrated a refreshing, genuine interest in student learning and success. Exams were fair and students were given ample opportunities to master material. Lectures were relevant and entertaining.
One of my favorite teachers, "That dog don't bark" one of his sayings, he brought so much to class, I really enjoyed him. It was a tough class but he was a good teacher.
hes alright
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IN THE SUMMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THERE'S TOO MUCH INFO TO LEARN FOR A CONDENSED QUARTER. YOU WILL PULL YOUR HAIR OUT & CRY BLOODY HELL!!!! Otherwise, Billy is easy to learn from. His quizes are tough, but it prepares you for the tests.
Lots and lots of Power Point slides. Good class. I learned more than I thought I did. The amount of material is tough to process. We were burned out with 2 weeks left.
excellent labs!!!!
The the best teacher I have ever had,i wish he taught everything!I took him for both 121 and 131. All of his work is hard but he is a very clear cut teacher, he gives you all the info you need to succeed. He pushes you to be the best student you can be, is very helpful. He can be intimidating, which makes YOU think before you ask useless questions.
Excellent instructor from the south. He shows a passion for what he does and if he dont know the answer he will find it. Dont bother with stupid questions..ie is this on the exam? That is an easy way to torque him off. Excellent experience, I would encourage this class to all.
Be ready to invest a lot of time studying. Use the textbook to read after lecture. I earned a 4.0 but I didn't take other classes so I would have plenty of study time. I enjoyed his class and would have taken 131 with Billy but he doesn't teach 131 in the fall.
Dr. Flowers is an awesome professor! I had him for both Chemistry 121 and Chemistry 131, and I miss his class already! He's not an easy grader, but he is fair. He kept us laughing a lot too. The labs were a lot of fun. I found myself enjoying chemistry at the end of the Organic Chemistry class, and I almost wish I could find a reason to take it aga
Horrible teacher, unfair grader, and he sites wikipedia for his lecture slides and test info. Enough said....
Ive dreaded taking this class with me not knowing 1 thing about Chemistry, theres alot to learn and feel lost alot of the time but Mr.Flowers reals me back in. Hes very knowledgable and enjoys sharing that info. Havnt passed yet but have a good feeling Im going to. Straighforward class, know your math skills with conversion. A lot of memorization.
He's like Bill Nye and Willie Nelson all rolled into one completely amazing proffessor! :D
I graduated from "Billy Bootcamp" and gained academic confidence.Billy's the most caring and thorough prof I've ever had. I'm not a "math & science person"-never took chem, I had to for nursing-i was scared. Worked my butt off and got As in 121/131. If you put in the time& do the work Billy will bend over backwards to make sure you learn!THE BEST!
Do not take this class! It is possible to get an A, but it is very difficult! His grading system is strange! He makes you buy a book, and he never uses it (like students have $ to waste). I learned nothing from him, except to listen to others before signing up for a class!
I was retaking Chemistry 121 and I was glad that I took it with Flowers. He gives you the slides so you can just pay attention and not have to worry about copying things down, which helped me out a lot. He does seem intimidating at first, but he really wants you to succeed and will help you be successful in college chemistry.
Billy is a highly intelligent man, after all he IS a doctor of chemistry. You have to work in his class for sure but don't be intimidated by his brilliance. He will even tutor you 1 on 1 if that is what it takes for you to succeed. You get out of this class what you put in to it. I love his choice in music during labs too, younger generations beware!
Billy is in one of the best professors I've ever had. His expectations are clear, he knows how to explain the material, the class progresses in a logical fashion, and he's extremely fair. My advice: attend every class, take notes on the PPT slides, don't procrastinate when it comes to learning the material. Also, I hardly used the book at all.
I love Billy! i took him for 121 and 131. if you don't follow his instructions during lab though, he does get upset. All in all he's a good guy and means well. Great sense of humor!
121/131. If you really want to learn chemistry Billy is the man to learn from. He may come off as intimidating but he will bend over backwards to make sure you understand the material even if it means stopping the lecture to get it to you. His labs are tough because he wants you to strive to learn. Funny guy too. Thanks billy A+ for your style.
I was not confident in my abilities in Chemistry until I took Dr. Flowers ("Billy"). AMAZING! If you have the chance to take him, I highly suggest it. I think at the beginning of class he told us that 97% of our tests would be from his lecture slides...he wasn't kidding. Never had to open the text book. He made Chemistry much more understandable
Save some $ and don't buy a textbook. Managed to get a 4.0 with just the material provided in class. Billy is a bit gruff but he is clear fair and extremely well organized. The class is easy to pass but a 4.0 will require some discipline with your studies. The best advice I can give is to learn as much as you can while doing the take home quizzes.
I'm not a fan of how Billy runs his class. I like more hands on instruction. Billy just reads from his slides and doesn't really interact with the students much. Yeah, He'll answer questions, but you really could just get the book, take his study slides home and not even show up to class. If all you do is read from slides, why bother show up?
Extremely tough, did not make content interesting or fun to learn.
Unless you are truly an A student don't take this class in the summer, tough. He is available most of the day in his office and will answer questions. It took my twice, but got my 4.0. In class tests are no joke, timed and hard, even the second time around...I studied about 2-3 hours most days. If you put forth the effort, he'll help you!
Mr. Flowers is a terrible Chemistry teacher. All he did was read from the slides. His tests were very lengthy & he never took the time to explain things. Very arrogant man.
Flowers is a nice person, but not an very engaging professor. He reads from his lecture slides and does little else. I feel as if I could have done the lecture part at home and came in for lab time. Sadly, he was the only option for me with my schedule and I has no other choice. He did not fit my learning style at all.
He reads from his power point. Doesn't seem to want to answer questions. He tends to make derogatory comments that should best be left outside of the classroom. I personally find some of his comments distasteful. I had no choice but to take Chemistry 131 from Mr. Flowers (scheduling conflict). Needs to be more professional and just teach chem.
This class was definitely not easy, but if you are willing to put in the study time, an A is possible. Billy really knows his material, no need to buy a textbook, he gives you all the material for the class.Great professor, great class, fun labs.
I always heard that Billy was a tough teacher, but he is the best teacher I have ever had. His class is very difficult, but he makes sure you know exactly what to expect on his exams. The material is very organized, and Billy is always willing to help. My advice is STUDY STUDY STUDY, and you will pass this class no problem!
That is the great teacher with a very well organized materials. I really appreciate his teaching.
Do not take this class in the summer, moves at too fast of pace for the material. I don't understand all the good reviews, most of the people in my class thought he was unhelpful and rude. Take with another professor if possible PLEASE.
Very organized. I didn't buy the recommended textbook. I bought an older version for $13 on ebay, but you can get by without one because he provides a packet with all important info. Loved that lecture attendance wasn't required as I had a long commute and childcare issues. Got a 4.0 but had to study quite a bit. He's approachable & friendly.
Very difficult class. I took it bi-weekly and I felt it put me even more at a disadvantage. Teaching style was difficult to follow and during lecture he just reads off his slides (which he prints every single one and binds them for you into a fatty textbook) not very friendly. I had to withdraw and do not plan on taking him ever in the future.
Prof. Flowers is a horrible teacher. If you need to take this class for allied health and are required to get a 3.5 or higher STAY AWAY. Instead of answering questions and being helpful he was flying RC helicopters in the hallways and listening to the police scanner. He doesn't care about his students at all. I got a good grade & am still very mad
Pay attention, ask questions, don't hesitate. Just have to be confident and ask questions. He gives you the lecture slides which is helpful, for you don't have to stress out about getting everything down and just write down additional information that's said in class. Read ahead! It'll help to get your questions ready before the lecture
Flowers is the really cool person with a love for Chemistry! But he is very dry, straight forward and boring. He is very clear on his expectations, he gives you his slides right up front, no need for a book. I would not suggest him if you get distracted easily or are ADD.
Professor Flowers is amazing. I had so much fun in his class. It is important that you go to every class and lab but he really works with you to make the class successful. I would take him for every class if I could. If you're motivated then I would recommend him 100%.
I have been in college for three years and Billy is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. He was intimidating to students when it came to asking questions. Many people were afraid to ask questions. He was very unhelpful in labs and always had an attidude when students didn't understand understand things. Seriouly, avoid him if you can.
Great instructor. I took him a year and a half ago for my nursing prereqs. Don't get me wrong, the classes were difficult, but that's nursing school for ya! You have to out in the effort to get a good grade. Took bio chem over the summer... Fast paced class but totally doable. Thank you Dr. flowers for helping me ace chemistry! :)
Pretty uninterested in the subject matter and incredibly difficult to approach with questions. Overall, class was one-dimensional and uninteresting. Not for someone who needs hands-on learning.
Every single person in my class was scared to death of him.He went on many rants, yelling at everyone.I forgot to sign in one day, so I went to go sign in and blocked the projector.I guess he thought I knew I was blocking it but didnt care.I said im sorry and went back to my seat.He made such a big deal about it,made a really rude remark DONTTAKE
Do yourself a favor and take John Pellock for all your Chem classes. Flowers is rude and verbally assalts students for making mistakes. I wish I would have taken Pellock for all my Chem instead of Flowers.
Billy's classes are hard. He wants you to learn the material & there is a lot to cover. Tests are fair - no tricks & extra credit is offered on each one. Many students dislike him b/c they aren't prepared to WORK! I'll miss Billy- he's a cool guy and not the monster many say. Just don't waste his time, your time, or the class's time!
I switched his class the first week, because i felt he wasn't helpful, and he just read off powerpoint slides with a mono tone voice. When he was teaching i felt he was not really even trying .
Billy is an excellent professor and funny. He provides the material you need for the class. He answers any questions even if it means finding out specifics for you and letting you know next time. It is a difficult subject but he does everything he can to make you understand it. Pay attention to due dates and don't procrastinate on take home stuff!
If you need this class for allied health and need a good grade, try another instructor. His grading is inconsistent. Make sure you focus on significant figures, he will mark you wrong even if you follow his instructions. I would not take another class of his because of this, who knows what your true grade is when so many grading errors occur.
Makes chemistry boring. He doesn't sound interested in what he teaches. He isn't helpful at all. I would not recommend anyone to take his class.
Billy is great teacher. The people who dislike him are lazy and want an easy A. Very organized and sets clear expectations. He provides all his lectures slides upfront. Study them and you will do well.
Billy is a cool guy, but... he make tests and quizzes unnecessarily hard and tries to trick you instead of teach you. I studied hard for this class because I am a school nerd (GPA with over 30 classes was 3.68 prior to this class), but this class crushed my will to continue learning at this institution. If you work, go somewhere else. WARNED
Billy tried, i'll give him that. He was a great teacher with a spunky personality - however he does have a temper. His lectures were long and put me to sleep - however that is on my part as his teaching style was not for me, and I don't like chemistry very much (I'm more of a biology person..). Tests were very difficult, extra credit was offered.
Billy, is cool, but his test are tricky, hard, and he is a tough grader. He is very nitpicky on significant figures, and lab answers. He also, give long lectures that can be summed up. The good part of Mr. Flowers, is that he gives extra credit to add to final score, and most test are based off take home quizzes.
All quizzes plus two exams are take home. Focus on correct sig. figs and clarity in answers. He's a stickler for that, but he does give partial credit. You won't need the textbook, he tests from his lecture slides so take good notes and ask questions. Sometimes better to ask at the beginning or end of class. Plenty of extra credit offered on tests.
BILLY FLOWERS I will say is the best teacher. he makes sure yu get what he is teaching. yes, he does not allow lazily and chatting in class something I really liked. its up to you to attend lecture and lab and read his material. you don't need to buy a text book he gives all votes required. you want to do well in chem, billy is your teacher
This is by far one of the hardest classes I've ever taken before, but its not impossible. You have to fully work for a good grade. That being said, Billy is fair; he gives out bonus questions on tests, and 1 completely extra credit (take home) quiz. By the end of the quarter, about 1/3 of the class had dropped though. Its difficult, but doable.
Billy prints out all of his power point slides and gives them out at the beginning of the quarter. Text book unnecessary. Lectures off the slides, lectures not mandatory to attend. Gives a syllabus with clear expectations, instructions, and dates. Lab attendance is mandatory. Homework is in the form of take home quizes. Know the material & you pass
Mr. Flowers taught off of a power point the ENTIRE quarter. He was constantly corrected by other students, and was not good at clarifying any questions. CHEM131 is a hard class, but Mr. Flowers makes it harder than it needs to be. If you have any questions, DO NOT ASK. He will make you look stupid, and not answer your question.
Great class! I did have to retake it due to missing too many lectures, but second time got a 4.0.
I took this class in the summer and he had to make many changes to the syllabus to get the class finished in 8 weeks. He was fair in the changes, but I was disappointed he didn't lecture the last "block" of material which is what we really needed to prepare us for A&P. He played good music during the labs which made them much more bearable.
Flowers is a great professor! He can be a little aloof at times, but as long as he sees you trying hard and genuinely caring about the subject, he's happy to help. This is a professor who is not for slackers, but he also makes it difficult to fail his class because you get plenty of practice with take home quizzes and exams.
Dr. Flowers (or Billy, as he likes to be called) is a fantastic prof. I had him for my very first quarter of college and he was an awesome introduction to Olympic College. Like any chemistry class, there's a lot of work to be done, but Dr. Flowers is very flexible and merciful when we need it! I would happily take another class of his.
Dr. Flowers was great. He prints off all of his lecture slides so you won't need a textbook which is nice, and he teaches everything off the slides. If you don't know class you already have the exact information covered and as long as you're trying in his class he is more than happy to help
I had Dr. Flowers for my very first quarter and I'm so thankful. Like any chem class, this is pretty hard, but he works even harder to help everyone be successful. Work hard and he'll respect you. He's flexible when life gets in the way and tells a lot of jokes. Plays good music during labs, too!
Cool guy, but he teaches solely by reading off the slides (which he gives you and you use as the textbook) and giving examples. If that's how you learn best, then more power to you. Found it hard to stay awake during lecture. Nitpicky when it comes to grading, make sure everything is written exactly how he likes or you'll lose points mad quick.
Billy is a tough grader and there is no curve. He will expect you to figure out about 25% of his class on your own and doesn't use the text book. He provides a very thick book of slide handouts. His humor though.... is great. A lot of self depricating humor.
You will struggle to stay awake in the lectures. He doesn't grade the quizzes and exams right, so pay attention to what he got you. When someone asks him a question he doesn't know how to answer. Don't take class with him.
Dr. Flowers is an awesome professor. Accessible, responsive, with clear expectations-- you won't come across a more detailed syllabus. Inspirational teacher, invested in the success of his students-- if you put in the work he will definitely give you the tools to progress. By far my favorite college level professor so far.
He was always clear with what needed to be done and when, not a lot of normal homework, just quizzes. Make sure to keep up and do the work on time and spread out and you'll do fine. He was always funny and understanding and great in the labs!
Great feedback, very funny, awesome lectures, and watch those sig figs! Keep up with the work. Do the extra credit. Final is optional as it is based off your average. Go to labs, and be in class. He can change up an in class exam to a take home so make sure you go to class. Don't buy book right away. He gives packets of the book. STUDY!
Goes strictly by PowerPoint slides, no book. Changes due dates around so SHOW UP to class. "It's in your syllabus" is his favorite line. Asks if anyone has questions then gets irritated when you do ask questions. Short temper during lab but, you listen to music. Some extra credit. Take notes and record the lectures. Good luck!
Goes strictly by what he believes. You cannot do anything differently otherwise it's wrong. Very "his way or the highway". Encourages questions, but gets annoyed when you actually do ask anything. Short tempered if Chemistry does not come easy for you. All in all not very helpful. Offers some extra credit, but it is a very "teach yourself" class.
His grading is tough but fair. He will catch a technicality. He is very clear on what you need to know to pass his class. You defiantly need to study to pass is in class exams. He is very available outside of class and is always helpful. He gives you a huge print out of his lecture slides and he only tests from the slides not the text book.
Generally he was an overall okay professor. The tests are pretty difficult, but not impossible. It really just comes down to studying. not every question on quizzes get graded. he gives out an extra credit quiz, and if you take every test, the final is optional. the labs were pretty easy and fun. he keeps updated grades posted outside of his office
Billy is a difficult professor. Took his Chem 121 and Chem 131 while working a full time job. No willing to make accommodations to my schedule to meet for tutoring, simply directed me to the tutoring lab. He reads off of his slides, which are taken directly out of the book. His grading is strict, no room for error or ambiguity.
Billy is an okay professor, but he definitely knows his stuff. Chemistry is a hard subject for almost everyone so yes it was difficult and required lots of studying in order to maintain a good grade. But he gives you a huge packet of all the slides he covers during his lectures so you will always have the material even if you miss class.
I took this class over summer quarter, yes I am crazy. Lecture was boring for me, however he gives you the lecture slides. EVERY THING ON THE EXAMS IS ON THE SLIDES!!! We did not use canvas and had several students only come on exam days. Because of our compact timing we changed dates and excluded material. So you should ATTEND class. GREAT!!!!!
The best term I can use to describe Dr. Flowers is idiosyncratic. He has a method, and this method is law in this class. Have trouble adapting, you will have trouble in the class. This is no different than any employer, they want things done their way, so I fail to see the issue. Very great guy, very smart, I would recommend.
Four quizzes and four tests WERE ALL TAKE HOME except one. You get to take your quiz/exam at home and he allows you to use the lecture slides and notes for the tests. No homework either. And you dont have to take a final, and it wont impact your grade.
I am very happy with my choice of taking Billy for chem 131. His quizzes and exams are take home. That alone should be enough for you to jump on his classes. He lectures the whole class which attendance is NOT mandatory but advised for chem is not easy. Lab attendance IS mandatory. Sometimes I think he forgets how smart he really is. Take him!
I loved taking his class! Even though it requires a lot of studying, it was really fun and interesting because Billy uses real world examples a lot and communicates in a way that is easy to understand. Also, his lecture slides provide you with all the info. you need except for a few notes you can only get in class. He's my favorite teacher ever!:)
Doesnt teach anything. Expects you to use slides to learn but they dont have the info you need. When you ask a question he doesnt answer. Makes you feel stupid for asking. You cant give a zero on this but he deserves it.
I wish he didn't make student feel stupid for asking questions, ALSO ITS NOT WHAT HE SAYS ITS HOW HE SAYS IT, He is disrespectful and he comes off headstrong. I'am glad I've taken chemistry once before in high school, because if this was my first time taking chemistry then i would have definitely failed this class.
Very smart professor but also a tough grader. If you follow his rules and pay attention in class, you'll be fine. You don't need a book and attendance isn't mandatory, except for lab. He gives take home quizzes and tests. It's a difficult subject so you might need to study on your own but overall a good class.
Excepts you to already know everything , and if you dont he gets irriated such as in labs . Rudest teacher I have ever had.
Very clear of what he expects from students. Will answer questions the best he can. Don't expect to just float through this class. He is a very tough grader but gives you all the materials you need and everything that is in the printed slides he give you is very important. Study on your own, if you don't study, you will not pass. But he is great!
This class is hard, he also does not tolerant any bull! But if you work hard and study a lot you will pass. He also drops the final if you take all of the exams. Provides a textbook so you dont have to buy it. And provides a cheat sheet you can use on the exams. But dont underestimate!! He is a smart guy
Professor is nice as long as you work hard, and read all the instruction before raising questions. Fast response to students email and fast + fair grading. Leaving compliments if we get 100% for labs. Clear explanation and feedback on labs. Giving students chances for extra credits. More than 1 attempt on exams. 2 attempts on some lab questions
Terrible communication and very rude. Also always late and had to push many assignments back causing a week with 6-7 assignments due on one day with assignments throughout the week as well. Very disorganized.
Tends to be rude and curt if you ask questions he deems stupid. Definitely would only recommend class if you're taking chemistry for pre req or have taken it in high school, otherwise you will be teaching yourself most of the time.
If you are not retaking C121, please avoid. - "Common Sense" questions aren't answered. - Assignments are NOT posted in Canvas. Paper only. - Grades are in a picture. Students receive codenames. - Intimidating & difficult to speak to. - Work is take home quizzes and labs, plus exams - Graphing calculators banned. - Lab mandatory, lecture optional.
Makes you feel stupid for asking questions. Docks so many points for the smallest things. Explains the labs so briefly you're pretty much teaching yourself the entire class.
Condescending, doesn't listen, only responds to questions with "It's in the text". Whips through lab instructions impossibly fast and WILL NOT repeat. Basically reads textbook aloud as his "lectures". Grades harshly. Homework includes concepts not covered in class or text. Bad attitude makes the class unpleasant and much harder than it should be.
Rude, doesn't teach, and does not like younger students. Threw lab report at me and another student. That was the last straw before I withdrew 3 weeks in. Worst teacher for fresh/new students. Completely new/weak/average in chem = stay away from him Gives grades but does not mark papers/return them. Can't ask qns. Won't admit mistake. Many withdrew
Professor Flowers has a very hands off approach to teaching. He is very gruff personality wise. I did well in this class and prefer a hands off teaching style, but I also was already familiar with most of the material before taking the class.
Rudest professor I've had. Lectures are very slow, he just reads the textbook out loud. Lab instructions are unreasonably fast; he doesn't accept questions or mistakes (as he made very clear). He told me multiple times that I should've paid attention or read the email (both very unclear). Many felt that he didn't like younger or female students.
I took this class in summer and it was good. some said he was hard on younger students but i took it as a highschool girl and he didn't treat me differently. he is a tough grader but it was reasonable because most of the mistakes i feel people made were significant figures but they're not many rules for it so it shouldn't be that hard to memorize.
He is not helpful. I was stressed the whole time on what was going on!!!! Beware of this class. His teaching style is not for everyone. He was rude multiple times. Left burnt out and frustrated!
Dr. Flowers is an awful professor. He seems to not care that he's teaching an intro class, demonstrated by asking a classmate if they knew how to read when they asked a clarifying question. Grading is inconsistent across exact same answers from group assignments. Is not willing to take any kind of criticism, regardless how small. Avoid at all cost
Tough professor with a hands-off teaching style. Lectures mainly cover the textbook, and he can be curt when answering questions. However, unstuck ai proved useful for study prep alongside the textbook. Overall, the class is challenging but manageable with dedication.
Rude and unhelpful. Humiliates students for asking questions. Does not give good feedback on assignments. A classmate had her whole page circled with "All nonsense" written as the only feedback. Recorded lectures are him reading through the book. Expect to live at the tutoring center with his class.
Doctor Flowers grades relatively harshly, and I would not be surprised if many students do not pass his classes. The one good thing is that there are many extra credit questions in tests, so it is not too difficult to do well on those. Nearly half of your grade is labs, so attending those is important.
No attendance for lectures. Lectures are him reading from the textbook. A lot of home studying is a necessity. He gives clues for exams in the lectures. Lectures are not the best quality, but he makes up for it by providing expressions and chemical names in the exams. He also gives LOTS! of extra credit during exams. Not very friendly.
If you're not 110% savvy in the textbook material and what questions you have regarding it, it's almost impossible to ask questions to this professor without feeling stupid
As a stranger to him, I wrote to ask his attendance policy due to a known conflict: You miss one week of summer session you miss 15%. Go for it and deal with it. If you want. What do you want from me? The registrar decides who can and cannot register. There MUST be another issue, or you would have never contacted me. Been there. Done that.
I had a very upsetting and unprofessional interaction with this professor. I did receive an apology after I voiced concerns about his professionalism and its affect on the reputation of the school.
Dr. Flowers knows his material, but he needs to retire. The Quarter, he couldn't care less about student success. He doesn't answer questions or give help in labs, he expects you to figure it out on your own or fail. He's an extremely hard grader and uses outdated techniques and doesn't use Canvas for grading, it's a PDF with code names!!!
Every interaction I've had with this professor has been unprofessional and condescending. There is no point in trying to ask questions about the content or even the class schedule, as he will rudely tell you to reread the text or that you aren't listening. Don't take his class if you can help it! I will be reaching out to the dean :(
I will save you some time. Don't take this one lol.
ts got me tweakin gng
My review may seem extreme, but it's no exaggeration. Very negative personality, unwilling to help in any way or answer questions. Often condescending. Uncommitted to student success. Be prepared to figure everything out on your own or fail (ChatGPT is a must). He is in bad health and needs to retire, but that doesn't excuse his unprofessionalism.
Let me be clear when i say this, probably one of the worst professors ive had in a LONG LONG TIME.
Heed others warning; do not enroll in his class. Lecture is just him reading from the book. No questions, no clarification, no worksheets. He is rude, unapproachable, and unprofessional. I too had a paper handed back where he wrote, "RIDICULOUS" on my answer. He explains nothing and does nothing. If you try and ask a question, he will degrade you.
He was not to bad. As long as you read your text book and watch his video, you are good to go. Not sure about others, but I asked questions a lot in lecture and lab after class and he answered them all.
For a beginner course it was very hard to follow. The only learning style expressed is through reading. As a visual learner I spent a lot of time outside of class just trying to understand what was in the textbook readings. He was VERY hard to talk with outside of class and would take up too a couple of days too a couple of weeks to respond.
I think Prof. Flowers is an okay guy. He seems kind of intimidating at first but was nice. However, his age really does affect the quality of his lessons. He is very hard to hear and is often out of the room during labs, idk why. He also had to cancel labs because of his poor health. Easy class to pass but hard to retain the material imo.
Be prepared to teach yourself chemistry. He just reads from the textbook during lectures, and he is incredibly non-engaging in class. Lab is mandatory, lecture is not. There are also very few things he grades, so the opportunity to improve your grade if you do poorly on even one thing is limited. Genuinely one of the worst classes and professors.
Very old school, does not use canvas to post grades, he uses like a self-made word doc with code names and has updated it like once the entire quarter. He doesnt teach, just reads from the textbook for 45 minutes, and his recorded lectures are the exact same just longer. be prepared to watch many youtube videos with people who ACTUALLY teach you
Rated 1.0 many reasons. He does not answer questions and his entire attitude seems as if it's an inconvenience to be teaching you the subject. His grading system is petty, and nit picky. I only got the grade I got because I paid for a tutor. I learned nothing from him, and if I didnt have a tutor I would have for sure failed the class.
