New professor. Don't think he's qualified. Says his side job is selling phones? But he definitely treats being a professor as his side job instead. Lectures are not beneficial because he just gives answers with no explanations
Does not care about his job, tests are incredibly difficult and unfair towards students. He has no idea how to be a professor, no idea why Ohio State hired him.
Exams are extremely tough, with 45 questions in 70 minutes with around 13 of those being math problems. Formula sheet was on the same page and on the back of the answer sheet we were required to fill in, which was not allowed to be removed from the exam. There is literally no reason to handicap your students like this. Lectures are useless.
Billy Patterson is more focused on giving "sports betting locks" than he is providing a deeper understanding to his lecture material. His exam gives way to many questions with not enough time. I hate Bonnie Schroeder too, this guy not as bad, but boy does he make it close.
This professor is absolutely awful. The hardest Fisher class I have ever taken and it is an intro level course. I have never written one of these but this is SUCH a bad professor that I felt the need to tell you. The exams will ruin your GPA because there are too many questions with too little time. Terrible testing environment. Do not take w/ him!
Absolutely the worst professor I've had at Fisher. Course is set up terribly, students don't get nearly enough time on exams. It seems like him and the teaching assistants aren't on the same page every week as they ask if certain topics have been discussed in lecture yet. Overall just a very bad experience for a core class.
Despite teaching an intro finance class, he expects prior knowledge and gives exams every two weeks, with only one lecture per week. This leads to rushed explanations, making lectures ineffective. I've studied and completed the homework, but it didn't help my grade in the slightest. He's a good person, but ultimately an incompetent teacher.
Billy Patterson might be the worst professor in fisher. He does not cover the content well at all and his tests are ridiculous. It almost feels like he actively wanted his students to receive a poor grade…
Worst professor at OSU. Billy treats this class like a side gig and probably spends most of his time golfing after his two lectures. We never get enough time on tests, and it feels like he's not interested in helping us succeed. Ball don't lie, Billy. Your Rate My Professor rating is a 1. OSU, give your $130k to someone else.
One of the worst professors at Fisher. Lectures are rushed and don't match exam content. Recitation TAs are out of sync with lectures and explain concepts poorly. Horrible testing environments and not nearly enough time to complete 45 questions with "none of the above" as an option for each. More interested in sports betting and golf than teaching.
His lectures are literally giving out textbook definitions for terms. No calculations are taught at all and expects us to take the exams with little time and so many problems. I don't know how anyone can actually work through the exam of 45 questions in 70 minutes with so many calculations.
To my glorious King Billy Patterson, the true savior of students: Thank you for taking accountability and curving the test—it's a rare thing to see a professor look out for us like that. You've brought some much-needed relief to our stressed-out lives, and for that, we are grateful!
What is with the influx of these five star reviews just because he curved an exam? If an exam needs to be curved upwards of 40 whole points because the average was so low, that speaks to an inadequate teaching ability. Exams are harder than Marc Smith's despite teaching and preparation being significantly worse. TA's aren't good either.
These new 5.0 reviews are very strange, whoever is reading all of these reviews take it with a grain of salt. AU 24 is Billy's first semester teaching this finance class and it is a struggle but he is genuinely striving to improve. He communicates clearly and although the class is frustrating at times, this class is completely doable with this prof
too difficult
Worst class I've ever taken
Billy makes sure that you don't fail!
Very confused by all the 5 stars given AFTER his exam. He curved it so much because the average was a 50% -- he didn't have a choice and that grade is a reflection of poor teaching. Not only is he not a good professor, he is not a nice person and doesn't seem to like teaching. Worst prof I've had in Fisher and probably at OSU.
Looks like a couple of people handed him a 5 star for curving a test by 40 points. This is intro to finance not calc 3 the tests should not need to be curved. If anything it speaks to his inability to teach material that shouldn't be that difficult. He's trying to trick you guys into saving his job and some of you are falling right into his trap.
Let's read the writing on the walls, consistently got 1s then randomly got a bunch of 5s out of thin air, yeah, not obvious at all! Don't listen to a thing the positive reviews say, if you do a bad job teaching and the average is that low, sounds like a proper reflection of his teaching abilities. "Lock of the week" (these don't hit btw)
Lots of mistakes were made during the first half of the semester, but he is trying to change. Appreciate his effort to make the class better but right now the class is still horribly setup and we are already two exams in.
Those who think Billy is the worst professor at fisher are in for a rude awakening. Very nice guy who wants his students to succeed. People make mistakes and Billy has owned up to every mistake he's made in this course (exam curves, exam drop, etc). As long as you actually put forth an effort and study, you will do just fine in this course.
Yes, hes owning up to some of his mistakes. No, that does not mean you should give him a 5. To the review that told everyone to "study" and "grow some balls", quit brown nosing. If the entire class gets a 50 in an intro class that's on the professor. I'm giving him a two because he is trying to make up, but the class is still objectively awful.
Fake 5 star reviews. He also does not deserve any credit for "owning up to his mistakes" and "trying to make things right". He literally had no choice. He messed his first semester up so badly, and was in danger of losing his job. He still is, and for good reason. He got scared after the disaster of the first exam reached Ted's ears.
I didn't want to leave a review until I saw all those 5 star reviews below. DO NOT TRUST THEM. "Billy is better than most professors at Fisher" my butt. Some of these 5 star reviews are really suspicious, because who would unironically write "THIS is what college is all about- learning how to fail, and making things right. Billy the goat!"
He sucks and is so unfair. Horrible tests no matter how much you study, gave a 45 question math heavy test in 70 minutes. Class average was a 50 for that exam. Do with that what you will.
Worst professor ive had thinks hes better than everyone and its the students fault for failing when his online exams dont work or he gives basically no time to take an exam. He talks about his personal experiences instead of teaching or asking questions, we get it you work in the cell phone tower business; that doesnt help me pass the class.
Had a very rough start in the semester. 1st exam experienced technical difficulties, which resulted in him changing the syllabus to allow one dropped exam grade. Second exam was too many questions and less time which resulted in class average very low, and he gave us a 40 point curve on a 180 point exam. Overall content of course is tolerable.
Take it from me, i bombed the first exam. The 5s and 1s are lies. He made mistakes but tries to fix it. overall a good prof, willing to meet outside class. People are hurt over grades or thankful for the curve. Also everyone keeps mentioning his other job and sports, but he rarely brings them up. Not gonna say he's the best but ppl are dramatic.
Like this is we should all boo him collectively during lecture
Worst class I have ever taken at fisher, IDK who put him in charge of teaching this course because 50 average on the second midterm really says alot about him. Apologies every time for making the exam too hard and so many kids failing but yet again the next exam is as hard as the previous one. Don't take him!
This class isn't as tough as some say. Billy has been accommodating, letting us drop the lowest exam grade and giving a 40 point curve on the second exam. Exams are challenging if you don't study, but with effort, you can get an A or B. I think lectures and course structure could improve, but I believe this will improve with the coming semesters.
I would take everything being said right now about Billy with a grain of salt. This was his first semester teaching the course and while it does unfortunately show, I think it will without a doubt get better as he continues. He is very accommodating and has listened to student suggestions. We were just his guinea pigs, but I see it getting better.
I used to hate this guy because we had to buy mcgraw access for 130 bucks (other professors' sections didn't) and because of the first and second exam. But each time there Billy owned up to the unfairness of the exams and made it right. I think this class will get better (also keep the 3/4 exam policy it reduces stress so much)
Terrible professor. First exam went horrible enough for him to drop it. Second exam was so abysmal he curved. Third exam was difficult as well. This man cannot teach nor are his exams fair. With all these atrocities he says he won't curve or round at the end, what a guy.
First and second exam were terrible, so he allowed a drop and a curve. Third exam was also quite difficult. He's a sub par professor AT BEST. What I don't understand is why our final grade wasn't based off the syllabus after the drop, but exam grade weight increased. Ex: instead of 620/820 your final grade is slightly lower, basically 590/820
Give Billy a break, he owned up to the bad experience of exam 1 and the difficulty issue of exam 2. Exam 3 was very fair if you studied for it. The slander about exam 3 is not warranted. Yes the semester started off rough but it was his first time teaching the course. He has been fair to the students.
Billy is someone who tried and failed. The thing I admire is he owned up to his mistakes and made things right. It was his first semester, he deserves to be cut some slack. Exam 3 was much more fair and I firmly believe that if I were to take the class next semester, everything would go much smoother structurally.
On top of the course being a mess, Billy was the rudest professor I have ever had at tOSU. I think he was stressed from his course being a disaster, but that give him a pass to have a terrible attitude. Would not take again.
The first and second exams were awful due to us being his guinea pigs, but allowing us to drop an exam because of this is fair. Exam 3 was easy imo if you studied for it. I think it'll get better next sem, amazing TAs but his lecture/conceptual content could be a lot better tbh. I think things will be a lot better in the future.
Best class at fisher!! You can tell Billy really cares about his students success and is passionate about finance! Exams are easy if you study and go to class!
First two exams were a mess but it seems like Billy figured it out for the third exam. However this does not excuse Billy's attitude while dealing with these issues. Came off as rude and condescending when talking to students. Was quick to place the blame on others before it blew back in his face.
He was fine and made up for a lot of the slack with exams by adding a 20 points to the first one, 40 point curve to the second, and made the third significantly easier. I did not take the final, so I can't speak on that, but because of how the exams went you could drop one of the 4. He was reasonable and once he figures out the exams it'll be fine
Worst professor at Fisher college. Highly recommend avoiding him at all costs.
Terrible format for the 2nd test which he fixed 3rd and 4th tests were definitely a better format that was easier to study for. I would be surprised if there is no curve in the class after all that has happened.
Really horrible experience as a starter class for finance. Pretty sure they stopped telling us the averages after exam 2 because it was so bad.
Billy is a good guy who struggled a lot in his first semester teaching. He messed up the exam system so bad, but I think he'll figure it out. On top of that, his lectures are really boring even if you like finance, so you need to pray for a good TA. If you study the recitation and understand the conceptuals, the last exams are easy.
Class became better toward end. Really wish this class had slight curve but I don't think it will happen.
Billy was a mess the whole semester. He spent the entire hour and a half of our first lecture walking us through his entire resume starting with his first job. Like how does this relate to business finance? His lectures were all over the place, and he cannot write good exams. I didn't sit for the final. Overall I learned nothing from his class.
Very rude during office hours. I said I would "find time to work on the recitation" and was given a lecture about how college students are lazy. He then asked me what I did this morning and that I probably had time to work on it. I said I had two interviews this morning, and he blatantly replied "so?". I had never missed an assignment or class...
We were Billy's guinea pigs and it showed in the quality of the class. I think in the future he will be a lot better as his exams will not be a disaster. Just do your homework, show up to class, pay attention, study a little, and you will be fine. The subject matter is a little difficult but just put in some effort and you can get a decent grade.
After Exam 2, he told everyone the class would be curved; a friend learned privately he wouldn't curve (he made the last two exams way easier), but Billy did not retract what he said earlier. Lecture: he talks in constant, fast, monotone jargon. Use his open-forum office hours ALWAYS. Study recitation probs and the textbook, not McGraw assignments.
This professor was new to this course. Made the exams extremely hard. Attendance was required and done through tophat, and graded at the end of the semester. We could only use the financial calculators. The first exam was curved because of issues. the second exam had too many questions. the 3 and 4 weren't too bad. good luck!
Billy was extremely accommodating throughout the semester. It was his first time teaching, and he did the very best he could given a large class. By the end of the semester, exams were an appropriate length/difficulty, and an A could be achieved without a reasonable amount of effort. I have no doubt this course will get better in the future!
He said the class was not going to be like last semester so many times but it definitely was like last semester.
People leaving these ratings are outrageously soft. The class was not even difficult, I don't know how people survived accounting if they thought this was hard. Billy's lectures got a bit boring at the end of the year because students complained about him going off-topic or not discussing material that was directly relevant to exams. I liked him.
Billy is honestly a horrible teacher, his lectures are confusing and he rushes the question and sometimes doesn't finish the answer. He goes over class time and the second exam is horrible.
I like Professor Patterson, but when he says on the very first day of lecture that he overhauled the course after a brutal previous semester, yet proceeds to make the same mistakes again, there is an issue. He is very caring about the students and goes out of his way to help, but he continues to make the same mistakes over and over again.
Billy is a nice guy and all but he is just not a good lecturer. The guy tries to squeeze 70 powerpoint slides in a lecture and still tests you on the material whether he actually reached the material or not. The 2nd exam was horrible and half of the concepts were barely touched on in lecture.
This man is so self-conscious about his rate my professor rating he mentions it all the time. His slide decks are way too long to the point where he can't get through them in lecture. 2nd exam was impossible and the class feels unorganized, inconsistent and rushed. He probably won't be here too much longer judging on him having 6 jobs in 8 years
Just bad, bad. Recitation and lectures just made things more confusing.
Billy is the definition of a guy who has all the potential in the world to be a very good professor, but just can't seem to get out of his own way. His class has zero structure and there is a severe discrepancy in terms of difficulty when it comes to exams. Exam 1 was more than fair and Exam 2 was impossible,
Billy is by far the worst lecturer I've had in all of Fisher. After messing it up bad last year, he somehow still can't figure it out. 70+ lecture slides that he rushes thru at an unreasonable pace. 2nd exam was a joke. He needs to go.
Billy is a nice guy but not fit for teaching. He moves so fast in his lectures, you really have to rely on your TAs to understand the material. The second exam might have been manageable if there was significantly more time but was entirely too difficult compared to the types of problems we went over in class.
Billy Patterson has tried to convince us about how his class is better now but it is not better. He tests on concepts that were not covered in class and the content he does cover in class is so rushed that most students are unable to keep up and learn any of the content. He needs to brag less and actually do what he says he will.
Worst managed class ever have heard nothing but awful things from every single person in this class
First test this semester was fair and students did pretty well in general and this made him mad so he decided to make the second test impossible. I studied for three days straight, knew all the material, and failed the exam. There also is nowhere near enough time to take the exam. You have to rush and do every problem perfectly to finish in time.
It's so embarrassing being a business major sometimes, and I'm giving him 5/5 just out of spite of the bad reviews. No, exam 2 was not impossible. Just review the lecture and recitation problems until you know how to solve them like the back of your hand. Of course the exam isn't going to be coloring inside the lines. Grow up and study your notes
To the recent 5 rating of Billy. Wow you really love to have a superiority complex and stand out in the crowd don't you. No one asked for your kiss up opinion. I got a 100 on the first test and thoroughly studied the lectures and recitations for the second test and definitely failed. There was not nearly enough time.Stop making everything about you
This class made me reconsider my major, I was doing really well with all of my other business major core classes until I took this class which Billy made it nearly impossible to learn all of the new concepts and not to mention how difficult he made all the tests.
Basically, imagine if Marc smith was a terrible professor and didn't know how to teach. I feel bad for his TA's. No review lectures, no study guides for exam besides the general topics, which he doesn't even follow.
Honestly might be the worst teacher I've ever had. His first semester at Ohio State was a dumpster fire and this one's not better. The overall average on the first exam was good, but the second exam was borderline impossible factoring in time and calculation problem difficulty. The class average was 23% lower than exam 1. Horrible Teacher.
Studied nonstop and did great on the first test. Used the exact same process for the next one and did horribly. At some point, it's not the students, it's the teacher. Genuinely the worst instructor I've ever had. The test was impossibly unfair, and I hope he realizes this and does something to make up for it.
Billy's exams has 5-10 questions we didn't do in lecture,hw, or recitation and he expects us to turnup and figure it out. He purposely made his exam impossible so he can meet his requirement from fisher to maintain a 75 average for the exam. He
Yes, the class is hard but people complaining about an impossible exam didn't study and do homework by themselves. Billy is a fair professor, and I genuinely enjoy his lectures.
The exams are unfair and inconsistent. Studied hard for the first exam and did very well. Did the same process and more for exam 2 because I expected it to be a little harder but it was very unfair. The questions were completely different from all the questions we went over in lecture and recitation. Went from an A to a C.
Billy is an underrated guy. He does not make his exams impossible but you definitely have to know the content well and know how to do the problems without question. Just study and you'll be fine. He is also always open to talk and is flexible with his hours. His TA's are also amazing.
To the past two 5s we know what you're doing Billy get off this website and work on your curriculum dude
Terrible. If over 40 people are giving awful ratings, I have a hard time believing that anyone but Billy would give a 5. Hopeful that he improves for the rest of the semester or the SEIs are going to be insane.
The course itself is very straightforward. You should expect to learn the majority/all of the math in recitation. The lectures are not the most engaging and he talks to us like we have an elementary vocabulary. But the tests are fair, just do all, and I mean all, of the recitation problems and you'll be fine on the tests.
I know Billy posts here because what student would say "His TAs are great." Literally no student would say that no one thinks about their TAs and they only know like 2 of 25. I know someone last semester who was a finance TA for a year and quit cause of Billy. He said all of the other TAs strongly disliked him too and a ton of them quit.
Lectures are incredibly boring. Start looking at the clock 40 mins before class ends. Exams all over the place
So obvious that the last couple 5 star ratings and even that 3 star rating is from Billy himself or he paid one of his TAs to do it. All of them say A+, you can't even get an A+ in an OSU class. Plus how would you even have a grade yet? This just contributes more to his massively bruised ego. Can't wait for the post-course surveys to come out
The class being unorganized and confusing is one thing (literally he even made the extra credit confusing) but Billy is just flat out a mean person who obviously thinks he is "above" teaching. My TAs being good has saved me this semester. Hopefully Billy either gets a reality check or he just leaves after the semester because he is a disaster
62% average on the exam no curve, half the stuff we never went over. Lies about attendance saying it's required but never uses the top hat.
I do feel a little bad for Billy but he did it all to himself. His class is an absolute mess and it is hard to comprehend how it could have possibly been worse last semester. His lectures are boring and he very poorly goes over conceptual items, and I've never seen so many students leave in the middle of lecture. Plus second exam was awful 62% avg.
People leaving bad reviews are so soft. This class is extremely doable. Billy just kinda screwed himself by making the 1st exam super easy and making it seem like the rest of the class would be free. It's is a lot easier compared to accounting people just don't want to put in the same amount of effort for this class because they are lazy.
Billy is extremely unprofessional and a terrible teacher. All he does is read off the slides and does not help you understand the material. First test was a joke and he completely changed the second exam and we did not know what to expect. I know of someone who went to his office hours for help and Billy laughed at him. So unprofessional
This semester is honestly not too far off from the last one in terms of organization. Second is exam was completely different from the first in terms of difficulty and structure. Not to mention the fact that you essentially have to go out of your way to learn the material yourself because the lectures do not help. This guy needs a reality check
This guy just shouldn't teach
Fun Awesome Great
Administration needs to do something. When the average on an exam is a D- and there is no curve or support, there is a clear problem with the professor. Not the students. He is egotistical, rude, and acts like he is above teaching/academia as a whole. He is a horrendous speaker and not equipped to prepare students for the material he gives out.
Billy Patterson can't lecture and his tests are ridiculously difficult for an introductory finance course. Honestly a terrible professor.
The exams are not that difficult, especially compared to Marc smith. He will never try to trick you on a question either. They only cover two units, so you can literally learn all the material in one or two days. Yes, he's not the best lecturer, but his class is very fair. I got a B+ in accounting and I am doing a lot better in this class.
The course itself is not very difficult, the exams cover two chapters each, so understanding the material is fairly easy. However, some of his exams are poorly written, and you have do decode the question before being able to do calculations, which is fairly difficult to do within the time frame. He is also kind of rude and unwelcoming to questions
Course organization makes no sense. How are there 2 week 13s? Hint: there are not. Yet somehow, Billy has made a second week 13. Billy is capable of manipulating time and space apparently. Saying that some students got 100% on an exam does not mean it was fair or good Billy. That is pretty condescending and rude towards students. Those are outliers
over-hated great guy hard to teach this class though.
Billy "friggin packet yo" Patterson. My guy needs to use actual slides pulled up on carmen instead of printing them
Absolutely the worst professor I have encountered at OSU. His exams are unfair and he is not helpful at all. Extremely mean to students as well.
Horrible teacher, rude to students, prints out his slides so you can barely see them (not very eco-friendly, Billy). Formulas provided for exams and formulas given in lecture and recitation all vary so there is no consistency and the sheets are basically useless for exams.
If you actually do the work and read the textbook, the class is very simple. Ended with an A. provides multiple chances for extra credit.
Exams were all over the place, too easy or too hard, no consistency. Lectures are overcomplicated. He's smart but lacks empathy, clarity, and care. No one's asking for hand-holding, just basic respect. He said "Public sector is so free and summers off", but teaching is more than that. Teaching isn't for you, “bud”—the soulless private sector is.
Absolutely horrific
Extra credit is extremely miniscule. Exams were all over the place would avoid at all costs
Genuinely the worst professor I've had. His lectures were barely helpful, the exams were inconsistent, and he was very condescending. If there's another professor you can take, please do.
The worst teacher of all time. Doesnt teach anything and just reads off slides. Also half asses study guides that makes people more confused!!! PUT IN SOME MORE EFFORT
The course material is well structured, but he is not a good lecturer. I gained a lot more from my TA's in recitation. Billy gives you extra credit IF you do 14 extra assignments during the semester, AND complete a spreadsheet that takes two hours IN WHICH you either get 1 point extra credit or none. Fisher told him to curve a test and he denied.
Billy seriously needs to figure out how to teach a class because these last two semesters of him teaching finance have been a complete disaster. Exams were horribly inconsistent, ranging from very easy to impossible. His lectures are useless and you are left with teaching the material to yourself. He needs to fired ASAP.
Billy is by far the worst professor at osu. He has no idea how to teach, the course is structured terribly, and his lectures are so boring. Billy is a trying to be Marc smith but he's not good at teaching at all. The exams are so inconsistent, one exam is a joke and the next is impossible. how does he have a job, osu/fisher should be ashamed
Billy, Billy, Billy... where do I start? Lectures so dry I started calculating the NPV of my will to stay conscious. Exams? Rollercoaster city. One test was basic algebra, and the next felt like Warren Buffett and a CFA Level III exam had a baby. Billy is trying to be Marc, but he's doing too much. If he figures out how to teach he'd be great.
HUMAN EQUIVALENT OF A FINANCIAL CRISIS He had the audacity to say students retaking the class “didn't try"... as if he isn't the reason they failed. This class made me hate finance &I LIKE finance. Now, I'm thriving in harder classes (4220 & 4221) because real professors know how to teach. Fisher should be EMBARRASSED to have him on payroll.
Billy is not the best instructor. His lectures are extremely boring and it is hard to justify staying through the entire thing when the TAs do a better job at explaining the material. The tests are either super hard or easy but putting in the work for this class should result in a good grade. Do not fall behind.
The majority of the ratings on this page reflect a greater issue pertaining to Fisher right now: people aren't being taught to think by themselves. To someone expecting to see problems copied from lecture slides and pasted onto tests, this class may difficult. Learn the material, as opposed to just being able to recite it, and 3220 will be fine.
Tests were so inconsistent, could not find a good medium of making a test. Class used a projector you couldn't read the board at all.
Horrible professor. Skips lecture material that is blatantly on the exam. 1 test is elementary grade algebra the next is masters level material. Still trying to figure out how he's employed here.
I had this professor for Intro to real estate and thought he was great. All the reviews on here reflect 3220 which was an extremely difficult class, I took it twice with two different professors. 3400 exams were difficult, but the lectures and in class activities were interesting. He was very funny with real life stories. I would recommend taking.
I'm going to give Billy some benefit of the doubt because he is a relatively new professor and he has all of the tools necessary to be a good instructor. The class was way too inconsistent though, the exam difficulties ranged from Easy-Impossible. Wouldn't liked more of a similar difficulty range between the 4. The TA's also carry the class as well
The worst professor I have ever had.
The class itself poorly ran but not awful. However this is not about the class. it's about the arrogant man who teaches it. His ego is both huge yet bruised. He'll throw shade at a student then go home and cry abt his rate my professor/scroll twitter to see if anyone's complaining abt him. i'll say it in words you'll understand billy #shrink you.
He needs to use slides instead of paper on the projecter and the exams were difficult but overall he was a good professor. He just needs to figure out consistency between exams.
next semester he will probably tell everybody “this is not going to be like last semester,” don't listen to him. if his personality doesn't change he will never be a good teacher and he mine as well just do people a favor and quit (which he won't cuz he brags abt how little he has to work as a teacher). not like he hasn't quit a job before
Simply put I describe this guy in words that would get this comment removed. So telling why he hasn't held a steady job his being a newsboy in the 2nd grade, he's condescending and thinks he's too good for the job. Wouldn't round up my 92.99% to an A and couldn't even have the courtesy to respond to my email about it. Send Billy back to Iowa.
Billy is not as bad as people say. It's important to do well on all 4 exam due to their weight. Homework is manageable but your score decreases with each attempt. I recommend doing all the practice problems, attending recitations, and going to tutor room. Billy's lecture style isn't good; he goes through the slides and doesn't explain well
The differences between his tests were absurd. Two very easy, two insanely difficult. You would think with this inconsistency there would be a curve but no. Oh also, do not bother emailing him he is extremely rude and he could genuinely care less about what you have to say. Has one of the worst ego problems I have ever seen.
Patterson not only is not a very good lecturer, but he seems to take enjoyment of his students not understanding the material he does. he is very rude and did not provide a curve even though half of the class failed the second exam. he also appears to monitor rate my prof is extremely upset over his reviews, be better and it'll reflect in reviews
Absolutely horrible professor that cares more about bragging about his very average career than his students. His lectures are extremely monotone and boring and he will either make his exams extremely easy or impossible. Clearly he does not know what's he's doing.
Lectures and recitations were fine, but the tests were uneven—two were fair, two included material not covered in class. With heavy test weighting and no curve ("B- average is the Fisher average, so no need to curve"), it felt unfair. He's not a bad lecturer, but the course needs work. In my opinion, Marc Smith is a fairer instructor.
ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. does not respond to emails or care about his students at all. His wife definitely cheats on him (if he has one) and he takes it out on his students.
Worst professor, exams super unfair with material never seen before. Tries to give so much extra credit randomly to save his job. Asked him a question about something on an exam and he had to look at other students exams to see how they found the right answer, he proceeded to just walk away from me and mumble under his breath, horrible. marc smith>
Please avoid this professor AT ALL COSTS. He DOES NOT care about you AT ALL and he WILL NOT help you if experience any unfortunate circumstance. He had the audacity to reject a doctor's note! His lectures make no sense either!
Billy Patterson is the kind of professor you don't want to have during your bachelor, poor lecture, no response to e-mails and no help. I'm writing this even with a good grade in order to let every student know not to take this course and choose another professor.
This man is simply put probably the worst professor at OSU, has a massive ego problem, and doesn't care at all about his students. He will probably try again to appeal to his new students that "this isn't like last semester" but don't listen to him. I spoke to the Dean of Fisher about him, hopefully he gets fired soon so people don't have to suffer
FIRE BILLY
I believe if you put in the work and take what you are taught and sit in office hours, use outside resources and don't fall behind this class is seriously an easy A. Billy is great and I loved how the class was structured. It's just life, put in the time, get good results.
Lectures can be extensive alongside too many slides in his presentations. Recitations are helpful with TA's being knowledgeable, but exam consistency is the biggest pitfall of this course as they are also 70% of your grade. Should be able to figure it out in the next semester, but many extra credit opportunities are available as well.
Best professor in FCOB that I have had so far! His lectures are very simple and straightforward, his recitations are run very well by his world-class TAs! The class is exam heavy, but the exams are very simple and he gives you practice problems that are exactly like the exam. He also gives extra credit opportunity. 11/10 overall!!
billy is a good prof, just got to class
Do NOT take a class with Billy if you can. I repeat, do NOT take a course with him!
93 Awful ratings and still employed by OSU and the ONLY option for this class. Embarrassing for the Fisher School of Business. How this man stays employed is beyond me. Do better OSU.
Talks down to you if you are a marketing major.Has a strong dislike to marketing majors Talks very informally and inappropriately even if you talk very respectfully Does not make you feel welcomed or safe when participating in class Please be cautious with this professor. I thought he was nice at first, but his behavior changes very drastically.
Took this SP25, super easy class, but i just missed a week for a bad sickness and did bad on a test. Asked about any extra credit opportunity, and his response was as follows... "Hi _, No. Thanks, Billy" Are you serious? Treat your students better dude.
Very bad professor
Exams are not what your lecture notes are on. Pulls a lot of BS. Gives 0 f*cks about his students, lowkey I think he enjoys having a student body that hates him.
Lecture and recitation were two very different things. Recitation has the harder problems and it's where you'll genuinely learn. First exam is quite easy, second is the hardest and third is ok. I needed at least 6+hrs to get an A-. He has the charisma like a bowl of gruel, so have a Monster or Red bull before class.
I thought the class was decently easy. The first and third tests were really easy and the second test wasn't too difficult. The recitations helped me more than the lectures and he provides 3% of the grade in bonus if you do the pre recitations and attend the meetings he posts.
Tough grader, no curve, graded by very few things. Offers a bunch of extra credit because half the class would fail if he didn't. Exam's aren't unreasonable but pretty hard. I barely passed and only did because Im not a finance major and dont need this class as a pre-req.
If you can solve all of the homework, recitation, and lecture problems you'll do just fine on the exams. I missed 1 or 2 conceptional questions on each one and finished with over a 100% in the class. Billy does not deserve the hate that he gets!
Billy is essentially the typical finance d bag who is so self centered and doesn't think about anyone else but himself. Disorganized class and the material isn't easy. Not to mention, finance is the most popular major in the world and at OSU, yet there is only ONE professor who can teach the basic intro to finance course?
I'm not a finance major, but I still really enjoyed this class. If you put in the effort, you'll be completely fine. I honestly think many of the bad reviews were from older semesters, because this semester he made a lot of upgrades and doesn't deserve the criticism he gets. The exams matched exactly what was taught in lecture and recitation.
3 exams on excel which are fair if you put in effort and do the readings, HW's, and pay attention in recitation. Lecture is boring and contains easy concepts but exams resemble recitations. Offered 3% of extra credit which was easy. Pay attention in recitation, do your work, and memorize the smartbook questions and you'll easily pass the exams.
if ur not in greek life or a d bag finance bro he does not care abt u he will talk bad abt u to his APhi&Delt TAs bc he thinks he is in a frat. bad reviews on rate my prof/all of ur students hating ur class is not a flex. OSU HIRE ANOTHER PROF!!! do not make all fisher students go through this torture he needs therapy&a wake up call to fix that ego
I see why he's hated, but he's not terrible. Exams were fair and if you read the textbook and understand the material conceptually you should be ok. You get 1% EC if you go to every recitation and do the pre-rec assignments. Lectures were monotone and you're better off reviewing on your own. Last exam was hard, so use his slides for review!!!!
This class was easy and forgiving. With there being 3 exams you had the opportunity to do not so well on one and still do very well in this class. Billy offered a ton of extra credit, he is strict on due dates, but the weekly work is very light and should not take more than 30 minutes. This class is entirely dependent on what you make of it.
