Can't stay on topic through a lecture to save his life. Extremely tough grader. Even if you PROVE to him that you are right, he won't listen. Tests cover small details instead of major concepts. I went to his office to talk to him after I failed his first test, but he told me to get out because I was wasting his time (not including the curse words)
Awful lectures. Ridiculous grading system--when people did poorly he sent an email saying "we weren't working hard enough." I am a junior used to challenging courses, but his lectures are so off-topic and his tests so random it is impossible to succeed. Also as a pre-med this did NOT prepare me for my MCAT, so even more a waste of time. AVOID.
Very informed and knowledgeable, but sometimes hard to follow.
He changes exam questions during the exam, does not accept any criticism. His grading is hard and inconsistent he will say we do not need to know something and then test on that in very specific detail, the list of complaints just goes on. Over half of my class dropped and the rest did not preform well due to his methods.
Taken 3000 and 4000 level science classes with top grades, so not unprepared. Lecture slides are sparse and lectures unorganized and hard to follow, but expected to know details mentioned once. Hard to study for but not undoable if willing to work. Very hard to know what info is expected to know. Quizzes ask one detailed question for lots of points
Dr. Zhang cannot stay on topic during lectures, and will often spend entire class periods talking about Nobel Prize Winners in other topics like Chemistry and Physics. He says you don't need a textbook, but YOU DO because he does a poor job at teaching. EXAMS ARE TOUGH - over the smallest details. Do not come into this class expecting to do well.
Learning anything in this class is a joke. Awful english. Can't stay on topic when teaching. Impossible tests. Extremely rude, sending out degrading emails to students, tells us we're stupid. Did all of the bonus, still didn't help. Thinks he's teaching us important things for the MCAT, but no help. This class makes me want to do bad things. AVOID!
The tests have a lot to do with small details and not so much the big picture. However he really does want you to succeed and does his best to help you out. Throughout the semester there were numerous extra credit opportunities. That being said you really have to study hard, it is not going to be an easy A but it is definitely possible.
I recommend taking the class with another professor. Seems like a nice guy with a sense of humor, but teaching is not his forte. Has great knowledge of the material, but explains it poorly. Everything I learned was from the book and the Internet. Studying is a guessing game. Random questions appear frequently. Extremely harsh grader. Good luck!!
Although many people complained about Prof. Zhang for many reasons, I disagree with most of them. Yes, his class was hard; but hard only if you are used to having everything perfectly outlined for you. We are in college, which is supposed to prepare us for real jobs, where we will be given guidelines and expected to figure out things by ourselves.
I definitely recommend getting the book. His lectures are hard to follow and just relying on the lecture slides won't help. His slides are mostly pictures and you sometimes have to play a guessing game of what scientific term he just said. It's difficult to expect what you will be tested over. He gives plenty of extra credit and you'll need it.
Dr. Zhang is a great professor and really wants his students to succeed. If your the kind of person who doesn't go to class, you will probably fail if you take this class. I would definitely recommend him if you are interested in research.
-Large number of points for each question. You don't know a single answer, you're screwed! -Exam questions VERY vaguely written. Questions do not ask for specific answer. Yet, he wants you to write a 1 sentence answer when the question is not clear. -All over in place in lectures. Irregularly shifts from point to point. Don't know what to write.
What's difficult about this class is that he expects test answers to be very specific while the questions could be vague (especially fill in the blank). He has an accent but it's not crazy bad and i think if you put a lot of work towards it, your grade won't suffer too terribly.
This is the hardest class I have taken at Mizzou and I have taken many advanced 3000 and 4000 level courses. The things he tests on are incredibly specific so if you think you'll do fine by just understanding the main ideas, think again. He does not stay on topic during lectures and it is a complete guessing game sometimes to understand him. Beware
He's a really great guy, and really easy to listen to. The problem is that his lectures just kind of wander about, and when test time comes, he wants you to be very, very specific. He'll tell you to learn 10 different drugs, 10 different enzymes, and 10 different experiments. On the test he'll ask what Nobel prize winner used what drug in what year
While Dr. Zhang is an extremely good guy and wants to make your tuition dollars worth his class, he falls short of his goals. The biggest nuisance is his tendency to ask for very specific details on his testsquizzes that were barely mentioned. If you think you'll be fine knowing the main concepts of his lectures like in other classes, you're wrong
I am a senior engineering student and Dr. Zhang's class has given me more of a headache than any of my other classes. I signed up for cell biology with the expectation that I would be learning about how cells work. I've instead learned nothing but specific, irrelevant facts about diseases and listened to countless stories about his famous friends.
Great guy who truly wants his students to succeed. However, he's very vague about what information from lecture is most important. This makes studying for exams kind of a nightmare because the course covers so much information and his questions require thorough comprehension of specific topics. No multiple choice. Tough class. Don't underestimate.
Great guy who really wants students to succeed. I don't know if this is his first time teaching a larger more basic level, but his style doesn't totally work. Uses specific examples without explaining the broader concepts which makes it hard to get much out of them. Willing to help but high expectations. Nice guy and hopeful he'll adjust soon!
To pass: Attend all lectures, he asks questions ONLY verbalized Fill out his study guides COMPLETELY, they cover 90% test. Other 10% is lecture To be safe, write out EVERY bio process in a map and memorize major parts in order, a cellbio duh You do not need a book, wikipedia! E.C. is work, needed for A Plight lvl high if u do not study.
You go into this class expecting an awesome semester. Zhang is funny and tries to make his class interesting with stories, but that's the downfall. The majority of lectures he goes off on tangents and doesn't say what we need to know. Tests are difficult and test you over the littlest details possible. TAprofessor communication is non-existent.
Never felt so discouraged and hopeless before. I love to study and love the subject of Cell Biology, but no matter how many hours you study, you will not be even close to prepared for his obscure quiz and test questions. He is hard to understand and his expectations for what is important to learn are unclear. Avoid if at all possible.
Does not emphasize the material that is talked about in the booksyllabus and the material that will be covered in the exams. Instead spends class discussing "important" topics that you will most likely not be tested on and talks about Nobel Prizes in almost every class. I'm very disappointed with this professor.
Ok, here we go. Dr. Zhang tests over nitty-gritty details that he either covers briefly and verbally in class or does not cover at all. He does not test over concepts, but would rather have his students memorize definitions. I have taken 4000 level biology courses and passes with ease, but this is by far the hardest course I've had.
You definitely have to work hard in this class. Lecture is essential to doing well in this class. He has PowerPoint notes but will sometimes ask questions on the tests that were only discussed in lecture. Also, he has some pop quizzes, but you are able to use your notes on them. Most examquiz questions are from his study guide questions though.
He provides Powerpoints in advance, but he gets off topic, so you cannot understand there are also less words and more pictures, so it is hard to follow along during the lecture. His exams are tough as the questions are nitty gritty and challenging. His lectures go over the littlest details, but you're tested on the major concepts in detail.
Dr. Zhang is honestly the best professor I've had since I been in college. Even though its a little difficult to understand him, he still finds a way to explain the content very well. If it wasn't for time and money. I would enroll in all of his classes.
The exams and quizes were difficult and graded very tough.
You have to pay really close attention in lecture to get the test information. He treats it more like a research topics in cell biology class instead of an introductory cell biology class. I wouldn't recommend taking this class if you don't have to take it. It's not an easy class. He isn't very clear on what information will be on the tests.
Extremely hard class, definitely not one to be taken lightly. Takes course very seriously & runs it on more of a graduate level than an introductory cell bio course. Tests are brutal and detail specific. Quizzes are also hard. However open-note pop quizzes and bonus points are offered as a saving grace for easy points. No curve.
Dr. Zhang is a nice professor, and if you put the time in to learn the material you will do well in his class. On the other hand, if you are just looking to get an easy A this is not the class to take. Dr. Zhang is very passionate about the material he teaches about, and expects his students to understand the material well.
I enjoy a course where I'm motivated to perform well out of respect for the professor and his passion for learning. The only course I've taken at MU like this was Keller's Chem 3 H. Only take this course if you know how to study, but I think that goes without saying for Bio class? Standard difficulty for class at MU. Do u even lift? welcome to RL!
Do take the time to go through the lectures and make sense of them. Do the study questions and make sure you understand them fully. Don't underestimate the quizzes as they will stump you if you haven't prepared before hand. Come to class because sometimes the quizzes will be over something that he stated in class but not in the notes.
This is the worst class I've ever taken. I felt like the entire semester I was unprepared for everything. Instead of trying to understand where the ENTIRE CLASS was going wrong , he chose to believe that we were all incompetent and put in no effort. Most discouraged I've ever felt in my life.
He was rude I emailed him and asked a question in his face about assignments because somethings wasn't clear and he was rude told me it was clearly stated and I just felt like if I'm asking a question then apparently it's not too clear to me. Also it's hard to follow his lectures and you just need to go in and study study study everything
This was the first time I've taken a class where I have felt like no matter what I do I can't succeed. You can't tell what you're supposed to be learning Because he goes off track so often. His test are hard as well as his quizzes.
This class was the hardest class I've ever taken. He is the toughest grader that looks for the exact specific answer that he wants or else you get no credit at all. He just cares about getting a Nobel prize and ties it into his confusing lectures. If you wanna depress yourself then go ahead and take it otherwise AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!
His lectures are hard to follow, he gets off topic very easily, and is very unclear of what he wants you to take away. He is a very nitty gritty professor where he tests on minescule details instead of major concepts. The quizes and tests were absolutley ridiculous. He expects you to do ten times more work than other classes. Never felt so defeated
I have never taken a class where I was more confused on what was going on. He is horrible at explaining anything. All I can say is thank God for having a decent TA. If I didn't I would have failed this class miserably. If you can take this class from another teacher do it you won't regret it.
The worst thing about this class that the quizzes are very broad and they only have one question.
His lectures are a little confusing, he is particularly interested in Nobel Prize winners, If i were you I would definitely get the book because sometimes the lectures can be hard to follow. Make sure you PAY CLOSE ATTENTION. Many of his quizzes come from things that he said in class, so if you don't go to class chances are you won't do well at all
Ive never been a complainer about teachers and usually support them when others put them down. Not this time. He is by far the worst teacher I have had in my academic career and everyone I have talked to agrees. His lecutures are pictures, doesnt go over them and then asks test questions about stuff we never talked about on tests. Dont take him.
Go to class. Learn the definitions and memorizeunderstand pretty much all of the information that he talks about in class. Dr. Zhang challenges his students to do higher-level thinking, so if you are unfamiliar with research topicsideas go to his office hours. He is very friendly, and more than willing to help you LEARN. This is college.
You can tell he loves teaching but was the toughest professor i've ever taken. Extra assignements, hell lotta extra material (half the stuff for exam 2 wasn't even in the book). Extra work but teaches you how to assimilate info. Advice: DO THE DAMN STUDY QUESTIONS!!! He likes to test more from them than the book. Verdict: Definitely worth it!
The class to take if you're interested in research. There is extra reading, he ties everything learned in class back to research topics and in the last lectures, combines topics learnt throughout the semester. Tests and exams are HARD!! Do the study questions he gives you,he mostly tests on that. Definitely recommended, teaches you how to think
Dr. Zhang is one of the nicest most interesting professors I've ever had. Don't let the angry posts on here dissuade you from taking his class. Although you will have to study hard and keep up with the class, it is well worth it. I have learned more from this class than any other I've taken.
This was by far the most stressful class I have taken at MU. I like Bing as a person but those tests and quizzes, WOW. They had ridiculous questions on them that were only geared towards one specific topic in GREAT detail vs. the study questions he gave us as a guide. Waste of time to study because the test will look like a foreign language.
Pros: He's funny and knowledgeable Cons: Tests and quizzes are tough and the material you are tested on is somewhat unpredictable. Consistently low (by low I mean F to D range) test and quiz score averages do not make him reconsider his teaching style, but rather he'd put blame on students for not trying. Persistently lusts over nobel prizes.
Hard to understand. Unsure on criteria for test and quizzes a lot. Doesn't redll make topic interesting.
This dude is awesome! definitely better than most bio professors at MU. Show up to class and take notes on things he says not the slides. you can look up the slides later. Do as many extra credit assignments as possible and you will get an A.
He taught some interesting extra subjects that can grab your attention, however this extra material usually dealing with diseases can be pretty advanced and hard to understand and you will be tested on it. The class averages were not so great for almost all exams and quizzes. Anice guy who wants students to develop. Into application over big pictur
Nice guy but get ready to work. His lectures are extremely dull and are unorganized, making it hard to follow. To make the problem worse, there are no video recordings to go back to and take notes. It makes TestsQuizzes even more difficult. I would definitely recommend getting another professor for Cell Bio.
Professor that is really interested in teaching and tries to stimulate your learning. Be prepared to take lots of notes! His slides are put together in a matter that doesn't explain too much and he does not use tegrity. His tests and quizzes are on the smallest facts that he only explains quickly. He does give ample extra credit opportunities tho
People who take this course... LISTEN TO WHAT HE HAS TO SAY AND DO IT!!!!!! If he says do the practice questions, do them because they help so much. Just do what you're suppose to do and you will be fine.
He was an absolutely horrible teacher. unfortunately he was new to our school so i was not warned. All he does is talk about how amazing he is and all the awards he has accomplished, but can't can't seem to teach his students anything related to the class. His tests are ridiculous and you have to teach everything to yourself.... aka read the book!
Professor Zhang wants you to stay current with hot biology topics, which includes reading research papers, learning new molecular techniques, watching videos, and much more. He is a very tough grader when it comes to quizzes because he is looking for specific terms and phrases listed in the answer. This class is not easy, but the help is there.
Professor Bing has an intense interest in what he is teaching. In his own words, "nothing gets me off more than the brain." He loves cell biology and I would honestly recommend him as a professor. If you are Pre-Med, this is the teacher you want.
You have to teach yourself everything outside of class via the internet. He doesn't teach you much. Just gives you study guides. But unfortunately if you don't write down exactly what he wants on the test you'll fail. He expects you to know what's in his head. Even the TAs complained with us. I didn't like his class.
The tests are really tough. You have to go to class in order to do well on tests since everything on it comes from lecture. I recommend taking good notes and recording the lecture. Study way ahead of time for the tests and quizzes. He does answer questions in office hours, so he is helpful. The class only has three tests so study hard.
Class is tough. The test are over study guide. Do all extra credit, no curve. If you do not understand something, he will discuss it with you. Wants you to succeed but have to put an effort in it. Go to class, pop quizzes and quizzes are often. Plus explains some stuff that is not in the book or powerpoint but on the test.
Not even worthy of 1 star rating. Was cussed out multiple times after going to his office hours for "wasting his time" asking questions. Powerpoints are composed of pictures. Has the lowest grade distribution on record at Mizzou for the class (and that's AFTER more than half the class dropped). Very rude, unhelpful, and AWFUL at teaching. AVOID HIM
I just got an A on the first exam with a new professor by putting in half the effort it took for me to get a D on Dr Zhang's first exam. Exams consist of questions concerning small details that he may have briefly mentioned in between bragging about himself in lecture. PowerPoints only have pictures, so they are no help. TAs agree that he is unfair
Anyone who has rated him more than 1 star in helpfulness obviously hasn't ever been to his office hours. If you actually go to his office hours, he will become frustrated and will often yell at you for wasting his time. He encourages you to ask questions on exams but if you do ask a question, he won't answer it, stating "the question is very clear"
Probably the only reason there are good ratings for him on here is because he bribes students with extra credit to give him a good rating. Dr. Zhang is very bad about staying on topic during lectures. He often ends up spending most of the time talking about former Nobel Prize winners and how he knows them personally. Tests are unreasonable.
Bio 4002 - Neurobiology of Disease. Lots of reading, lots of class presentation, but not a heavy workload outside of class. Much easier than other 4000+ level classes. Dr. Zhang takes student feedback seriously and changes his teaching style accordingly. Be sure to attend every class. If you do your work, you will get an A.
Set up like a grad-level course where you read a article for each class and the students present it. No tests, one term paper, and reading articles, so as long as you do the work, you will get an A. I really liked the set up of the class and it was very easy to get to know Dr. Zhang. Now I will get an awesome rec letter.
This class was really interesting and useful for anyone interested in learning about neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's, ALS). There is a lot of reading, but there are no exams. Dr. Zhang knows what he wants in the presentations and provides great feedback. If you go to class and are prepared for the presentations you will get an A.
I feel really, really bad for anyone taking his Cell Biology class next semester. Along with about just about half the class, I was forced to drop his class with a W. I just finished retaking Cell Biology with a different teacher and received an A with ease. Dr. Zhang has the lowest grade distribution of all Cell Bio teachers and the worst reviews.
I feel really, really bad for anyone taking his Cell Biology class next semester. Along with just about half the class, I was forced to drop his class with a W. This guy is a joke. Mizzou needs to get rid of him, as he truly makes the University look bad. The least sympathetic teacher you will ever experience. When the entire class fails a test, instead of taking responsibility, he will email everyone stating that the entire class isn't trying. Taking this class with Bing is a huge waste of time and money.
An absolute embarrassment to the University.
Bing is enthusiastic about his lab work and he is more interested in teaching you the newer techniques as opposed to the fundamentals. He changed how he taught this semester, offering a total of 32 bonus points, had 2 take home exams and one open note exam. Do the study questions, just copy his slides. Really easy for me I got an A+
Dr. Bing's a good professor. His test are hard, but he substituents in take home portions which are basically free points if you do them and it counts towards the test. Since the test are hard he does give lots of extra credit. Helps out with curves at the end of the course. Genuinely cares about the students.
Dr. Zhang has been one of the best professors I have had at Mizzou. His class is not easy and he will make you work, but there is no reason to get below a C. He is funny and smart and is willing to go out of his way to help students. I would recommend Bing over any other bio teacher! I would take cell bio again for fun if Bing was the professor.
Every exam I have took was a curveball. His lectures aren't relevant to exams, you can read the book like I did but still be lost on oddly worded exam questions. His take-home exams are 12 page papers that are over techniques in biology and unfairly graded. Very unreasonable and unavailable during office hours (he was out of town every other week).
I took this class a while ago, when he first taught it, so I'm not sure if things have changed. I wanted to go back and reflect on it since it is the worst class I've probably ever taken at Mizzou. His tests are very random. He grades very tough and is unwilling to give back points that you should have earned. Tests over specifics, not concepts.
Horrible. Get ready to do 14 page long take-home exams toughly graded only worth 40% of the total exam score, and sometimes he is so generous as to make a take-home quiz and a take-home exam due on the same day! His logic: it's take-home, so you MUST have time. Also teaches nothing, just talks about his research and WILL TEST YOU OVER IT.
All I have to say is what MyZou says for his student evals: 77% "disagree" and 6% "strongly disagree" that he taught effectively. NOT ONE PERSON (0%) agreed or strongly agreed that they would recommend the class based on the instructor's teach style. It's no secret, Bing shouldn't be teaching
As a 3.7 science GPA student with my lowest grade a B in biochem4270/7240, getting a C+ in this class really does prove how awful Bing is at teaching. He can't properly evaluate student effort and knowledge of the material. His lectures are unorganized, and he could care less about you. Ask him a question, and he is demeaning. Worst professor at MU
Worst professor of my life, do not take his class at all costs. The take home tests takes 2 days. The multiple choice are completely random and doesn't go off of what he lectures. TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR
Great class if you love random trivia because there is no structure whatsoever to his teaching material and what he puts on the exams. Every exam is a surprise and the questions are vague. If you ask for clarification on the questions, though, he will state "the question is very clear" and not help you beyond that. Extremely rude professor too.
Horrible professor and class. Tested on irrelevant topics that are not focus of the class. Furthermore, I personally know several students he has essentially harassed and demoralized. Blames others and finds fault in everyone but himself. Stay far away if you want to maintain sanity and confidence.
Dr. Zhang knows alot about biology, but when it comes to teaching he seems to value degrading and berating his students more than helping those that need more assistance. He claims to be here to help the students because they pay for him to do his job, but i guarantee not a single soul would talk to their boss the way Dr. Zhang talks to his student
The worst professor I have ever had. Incredibly degrading, disrespectful, and the worst manners. He told a student they were unteachable in office hours. His teaching is unclear and he expects you to teach yourself 90% of the material. I was excited for this class, but he made me hate it. Mizzou needs to fire him. Would give him a 0 if I could.
Bing is fairly knowledgeable but has very poor teaching and interpersonal skills. But he will not own up to his faults; instead, he will blame his students for not working hard enough. Do not bother going to his office hours either because he will just belittle you. Strongly recommend taking this class with another teacher for a fair chance.
I took Dr. Zhangs animal physiology course in the Spring of 2022. I came into his class reading these reviews and being terrified. The course is challenging. My advice is to do his study questions, go to his office hours WITH Questions and you will be fine. Stay on top of weekly quizzes and study material often. I had the class in person. Good luck
As a senior, this is the worst professor I have had. Expects you to teach yourself material and does not provide study guides, not technologically capable (the class is primarily online), insults students, does not provide answers, expects extensive memorization, and uses intentionally misleading trick questions. Seems to enjoy confusing students.
Sample tests are helpful for exams, but don't rely on them. His grading system is kind of weird. Stay on top of the case studies and active learning because they are on the exams. I don't like this professor, he is kind of rude in more personal settings, and his class is hard even with labs to boost your grade.
I graduated with a double major in biology and nutrition and a 3.77 GPA (and 3.92 GPA in grad school). This is by far the hardest class I have ever taken. It is very different from any other course in that he doesn't really test over concepts, but instead seemingly unimportant details. This is one of 2 classes that I ever had to withdraw from.
Avoid this guy. He is absolutely toxic. I cannot believe that he is still a professor there.
