You will not understand a single word she says.. stay out of this class.
She seemed nice at first, but that's where she gets you. Upon actually starting the material during the first week, you learn her haughty and rude attitude. I tried attending two lectures, ended up not paying attention at all due to the fact that I could not understand anything she says. Rambles on and on about parts that really don't matter.
She's not all that bad. Aside from her accent which is, admittedly, hard to understand at times, her slides are pretty clear and detailed. She's reasonable, and pretty helpful if you ask her things either in person or via email. Seems like most people don't understand her because they're too busy yapping to actually listen. Midterms were reasonable
She's an amazing prof. Otherwise, I am terrible at STATs, but with Cindy it's easy to understand and get a good grade. I would definitely recommend her.
While Cindy can be hard to understand at times, if you pay close attention she's a decent prof. Definitely not the worst out there. She responds to emails quickly and is helpful one on one. You get out what you put in so if you're not willing to put in effort then expect a lousy grade.
People who don't like her are the failures who never attend class. Has an accent, but you get used to it. She is an amazing prof, and tries her best to make sure you succeed. Preps you well for the exams. Like every other course, you get what you put in. She cannot hold your finger and guide you through the whole course!
Cindy is honestly not as bad as people would suggest. While she does have an accent and can be difficult to understand, she prepares you very well for tests and assignments. She is nice, responds to email quickly, and her slides are helpful.
Found her confusing. She is nice and tries hard but I struggled to follow her lectures. She jumps around and doesn't explain where she got numbers from. Exams were fair but I didn't learn much in this class.
Her notes are very helpful and her midterms are more than fair.
She does have a slight accent, but she her teaching is really understandable and good. I found her really approachable and nice, as well as her midterms were very easy, and final was fair. Her notes are super detailed with lots of examples, etc. so it was not necessary for me to attend all lectures and labs without getting a really good mark.
She has a slight accent, but you can get over it within the first 2 classes. Her notes are very helpful, clear, concise and full of applicable examples. Her final/midterms are very fair, if you understand/do the assignments then it's without a problem. I attended all classes which were helpful/in-depth. She is a very approachable and friendly prof
Cindy is an amazing prof. After have taken this class in winter 2014 with Scott I almost failed the class before the final because that semester was the worst and most unfair semester ever. I took a "W" and retook the course in spring with Cindy and received an A+before going into the final. Her exams were very fair & she's very friendly.
Cindy tries hard and is very nice, but she has a very difficult time communicating. Her accent and poor grasp of the english language have caused me to be completely lost on the first concept. I'll be transferring to another prof the first chance I get
Can't understand her most of the time. If you ask for help she either does not give it or just tells you a really vague answer. Exams are tough, not because the statistics problems are hard, but because sheher TA's having the writing skills of a three year old. Terrible teacher and also annoying because she breathes down the mic every class.
Easy class. Midterms were exactly like practice ones handed out.
Super confusing prof. She often explains concepts with "it just is". When the entire class had a poor result on a midterm, she screamed at the class instead of looking at her teaching style. Barking "yes or not" at the class isn't that respectful either.
Ok at the beginning of the semester i was so close to dropping stats because of my mark after first midterm but i ended up staying & I'm so glad i did. Cindy is the nicest prof. Also her midterms are 10x easier than other profs. I'm just saying if you take stats with her she you will go in to the final with a good mark.
Cindy is one of the best STAT 213 profs. Admittedly, her accent makes it difficult to understand the material but she's more than happy to clarify when asked. Cindy is very approachable and flexible with setting up office hour appointments. Going to every class and staying on top of the assignments made it easy to prepare for all the tests.
Tests weren't too hard but impossible to understand. Barely any information on tests on d2l. Have to retake class because of poor teaching.
Absolutely the worst prof I have ever had. She doesn't give you anything to prepare for exams, the final looks nothing like the rest of the course and way harder than midterms. She doesn't explain where she got the numbers she uses in the examples. When the class doesn't understand she says "I don't understand why its so hard for you". Terrible.
Hard to understand because of accent but I talk to her after my midterm marks are posted and she gave me a 30-40% boost on each of my midterm when i showed her my corrections. Saved me from failing this course since i bombed the final.
Lectures were difficult. Lecture notes were pretty good for the most part. Had to learn a lot from the internet. The constant assignments actually helped a lot to understand and practice the material, good thing you usually have 3-4 tries. The midterms were pretty fair, but the common final felt like it belonged to a completely different course.
Cindy is a really nice professor and her lecture notes were very clear. The midterms were really easy and the final was not difficult at all. She ensures that her students do well by emphasizing important concepts, and she even added questions similar in style to the final exam on her last assignment. Highly recommended for an option class!
Cindy is a really nice prof, even a little too nice. She gives chances for extra marks on the midterms and will boost people who did bad up a little too much without giving people who did better a fair chance. WebWork's an easy 100% and if you get stuck, just google the concepts. Tophat can give +3%. Pay attention and actually try, you'll get an A
Cindy is amazing. She gives extra marks if you make corrections on your midterm and it actually boosts your mark a lot. and all final are multiple questions. The final is easy and me and my friends all get A+ in her class. She's really nice, going to take 217 with her in Spring.
Cindy is one of the best profs in stats!!!! She is so nice, kind of too nice for midterm correctionsbut that is good!!!! Definitely take her class!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome prof, probably ever cuz she gives u A SECOND CHANCE to write ur exams
Pretty hard to understand what she is explaining so you end up not understanding some topics as well. Lets you do midterm corrections which help. Stressful because you sometimes have to try and learn topics on your own time.
Her lectures are quite confusing; she's too smart for her students I would say. She goes very fast, so if you skip more than one class don't bather coming back because you'll be lost. I love the midterm corrections, they were very helpful. She gives lots of assignments. I guess her class is hard but that gets you to start depending on yourself.
very hard to understand, doesn't explain things very well. easy course if you read lecture notes online
Very good statistics prof. Sometimes a bit difficult to understand and can go through so material too quickly. Follow along with examples in lecture and lab worksheets and the course is relatively easy. She allows for corrections on midterms and if completed, the corrections will boost your grade.
I could overall say that STAT205 was a fairly easy class. The only thing was that Cindy wasn't very clear with teaching the subject and it kind of felt disorganized... You DEFINITELY have to do work on your own time/look for tutorials on youtube. She is there to help though if you ask for it. I suggest emailing her all the time & she's good 1 to 1.
she is a good prof, very kind and helpful, and she couldn't possibly make her tests any easier. The best part is that she gives extra credits for correcting your midterms. The only issue is that she goes really fast which makes some topics a little unclear. But as long as you go to class, take a little time to review notes, your set for an A.
Cindy Sun is a great prof. Yes, she's a bit difficult to understand, especially in a larger class, but she is very clear on what she expects. Her lecture notes are amazing, and so is her email response time. So happy I took this course with her. Didn't even need to do the corrections on the midterms, just do her practice exams and tut questions!
Decent prof. While I didnt understand her accent very well the lecture notes helped. Expect work outside of class if you want to pass this class. I liked that she did midterm corrections which boosted up my grade significantly but dont grade grub anymore than that because she is stingy with that and wont answer your emails.
I would say the biggest problem with her is that she has a heavy accent so it can be hard to understand what she's saying sometimes. She goes quite quickly as well. She does the lecture without much explanation as she is doing questions. If you take this class make sure that you've got friends in the class because we mostly taught each other.
Despite the accent, Cindy is really a good prof. She's the real MVP and allows you to do midterm corrections which really booted my grade. The material itself isn't all that hard and tutorial is really helpful as well. If you follow her examples and copy exactly what shes writing down, you can figure out/teach most of the subjects to yourself.
Cindy is VERY unclear in her examples. She tends to believe that the class understands it when in fact they do not. Cindy is a very smart girl, who knows what she is doing, but she is awful at putting her thoughts into words. The course itself is hard, and Cindy does not help, but she hinders the outcome. the midterm corrections are no longer!!!
Despite what the comments read, this class was pretty easy. Cindy does not do mid term corrections anymore, but she posts practice midterms, which are exactly like the real ones. I would really recommend doing it with a friend, or make friends in class to do the assignments with. These are easy marks. Think the final will be hard though, so study!!
Probably the worst professor I've ever come across. Has no idea how to explain concepts - google helps more than this chick. Do not take her class!!
Cindy has a hard time explaining concepts but if you go over the examples in her lecture notes & labs they're very clear. The midterms were easy & similar to the practice ones. Assignments & top hat bonus will also help you go into the final with a high mark. Final is pretty easy if you study. I also suggest going to the review session it helps
I liked CIndy. She was nice and she knew how to teach the material. Made it quite an easy course and gave TopHat as a bonus for up to 3% towards your final mark. Also explained MiniTab solutions and how-to's as well. A little unclear sometimes due to her accent but I still enjoyed her class.
Cindy is an amazing prof. She is always willing to help her students no matter what! her accent is a little bit hard to understand but she knows her stuff ! For sure would take another statistics class with her.
Reach out to other resources. I had difficulty comprehending her explanations. Easy course but instructed oddly. Make sure to know how to do things by hand, not just by minitab as you don't have it for the final. 3% bonus if you come to class and answer each TopHat question correctly. Nice grading scale, fairly easy to get A.
At first I thought this course would be hard considering her thick Asian accent and the content. But I asked for help during her office hours and she's really nice. This course in general has a lot of work. You have to review previous lectures to pay attention to further ones and you have to watch youtube videos. Final was brutal though.
I really hoped Cindy would be as good as I thought she would be, but it was a dissapointment ): For the midterms, I did not learn anything from class. I learned more by self-teaching and the labs! She over complicated things! Sweet lady, but bad at teaching. I got an A in this class, but only because I taught myself EVERYTHING! Go to your labs!!
429 with Cindy was one of the worst classes I have taken at the University of Calgary so far. The material is not overly difficult in comparison to other Statistics courses, but she does not teach you anything. There was literally one lecture where she asked the class to read wikipedia, and said she didn't understand the concept.
She is hard to understand in class but she is great one on one. If you do not understand the material in her classes go to her office hours they are great. Her accent makes the material a little hard to understand but it is still understandable.
Not a very good professor, teaches the entire semester using software that you are allowed to use for the midterms and assignments but then expects you to write a final without it, all of her examples in her notes are based on the software, and how to do the questions is based on the software.
Nice, funny person, but AWFUL prof. I essentially taught myself the entire course. Her midterms were incredibly easy, but her final was obviously meant to drop the class average as it was difficult & far too long for the time allotted. Avoid taking this class with her if you can, especially since she will no longer be doing midterm corrections!
As a second year student who took STAT205, I just want to say that it wasn't a hard course and it's entirely possible to do well. Cindy's powerpoint notes were very clear and made self-learning easy. She's also not as unclear as the other raters have made her out to be. Assignments are a free 100% on 20% of your mark and Tophat is a 3% BONUS!
Often she gives examples about one thing and then exercises about other things. Most of the time you will self-taught. Be prepared to read at home.
Cindy is a very sweet lady, and very approachable. She has the fastest email response I have ever seen in a professor. Her lecture notes are very helpful, but when she tries to explain, she usually makes it seem much more difficult than it is. Write down everything she writes down, and you can teach yourself the content! Study for the final!!!!
Midterm corrections are the only reason I passed. Explanations in lectures were weak and I did not know what was happening half the time. The TA was also not at all helpful and answered homework questions incorrectly.
She was very difficult to understand and her lectures were extremely disorganized. I had her for stats205 and being a weak math student in her class makes it very difficult to do well. Definitely the worst prof that I have had since being at the U of C.
Her midterm's are easy as long as you know how to do the practice midterms but her lectures are terrible and she seems like she has no idea what she is doing.
She is always like talking to herself and giving useless examples.
Has a really heavy accent and I found it very difficult to follow lectures, she seems like she is knowledgeable about statistics but I mostly ended up teaching the course to myself, its not overly hard to pass this course by watching youtube videos and whatnot so don't stress if you get a bad prof.
Easy class and cindy is very helpful midterms were very easy and she explained things well
This course is really easy. You can basically teach yourself out of it if you are with her. Her handwriting is really neat.
She's very nice but honestly I barely understand what shes saying. Not her fault but I just can't
Had to teach myself most of the content and she made a few mistakes and forgot to teach some concepts. However the midterms and final were incredibly easy and half the class got 100 on midterms. Also had 3% bonus Tophat.
You really needed to concentrate and follow along with the prof if you want to understand the concepts in class. The Webworks and Tophat questions help you understand the content more and they make great practice questions for exams. The midterms and final were very easy. I recommend taking this course in the spring for an easy A.
Astonishingly poorly run course by this prof. She is horribly condescending + unhelpful when you try to ask questions (which you may need to if you're not a stats wiz as you'll be teaching the entire course to yourself). Midterms extremely easy but after the class writes USRI's she announces a final worth 40% of grade will be 30 MC questions.
Difficult to understand her accent at first, although her notes are neat and concise. Makes jokes many might not understand. Practice every question solved in class and (lab) assignments and you will be good for the midterms. Recommended to take Stats 213 in the spring, since there isn't much material to cover. Final exam is tougher than midterms.
Cindy was a very frustrating prof to have. It was extremely difficult to understand her accent and her notes were all over the place. She made it very hard to keep up in class. She wasn't helpful at all when I went to ask for help, and therefore I struggled immensely in this class. Would NOT recommend!!!!!!!!!
She over complicated simple concepts. Sometimes even confuses herself when explaining. Get textbook and read and youll do great and understand. Do not base work solely on her lectures and assignments because you will not pass.
cindy who? had to teach myself the subject matter in order to pass this course. when you ask for help "please refer to minitab instructions" absolutely the worst prof ever, does not make an to help her students when they reach out to her for help.
THE WORST PROF TO HAVE. Assumes that you know half the material coming into the course and does a horrible job of teaching on top of that too. The concepts are easy but she makes them overly difficult and you will be left confused. Go to another prof's class if you can or if you can't anything else will help teach you better than she does
Her lectures may be hard for some to understand because of her accent, however, go to her lectures for the practice questions and answers. I learned most content through the textbook, practicing, and I went to her office with any questions. She genuinely cares for her students and is generous as long as you show you are serious about the class. :)
Doesnt' explain things/concepts very well, and doesn't answer questions in ways that make the topic more understandable. Assigns TOP HAT questions without telling the class then takes marks off if they are not correct. Tests on concepts that have not been taught, and test averages are very low, not due to content but due to the lack of explaining
i skipped for 8 weeks and im still doing good. she is trash do not take her you will regret it. her midterms are easy though and she is an easy marker and a very good looking lady.
The review here are beyond disgusting. The professor was very clear and her lectures made a lot of sense if people actually bothered to study. The midterms were very easy and the class average was low because others decide to use their instagram rather than listening. The instructor was very nice and would answer questions quickly. Nice professor.

Pretty bad honestly, I went to every single lecture and paid attention but she does not have a very good way of explaining things. You can teach yourself most of the things in the course so I just go to the lectures for the answers to the examples she posts in lecture notes. Would not recommend this prof if you are and at self teaching
Based on conversations with other students, the main reason people dislike Cindy is that she didn't hold their hand. You actually have to take charge of your own learning in stats. If you work through lecture slides yourself and do your assignments, you will do just fine. Such a caring prof, and she answers questions/emails so quickly and clearly.
She is a caring and accessible teacher, the reason some people find her rude or don't like her because she wants you to take charge of your learning, not carry you along. Some students just ask questions without thinking or studying. STAT 205 is very easy course if you do the assignments, work hard, and attend the lectures.
Barely speaks English, horrible prof, skipped her classes to see Scott Robison. Wouldn't of passed this course if I attended her lectures.
Does not speak very good English and is very difficult to understand. I had to go to a different professor in order to understand any of the content. She tends to jump from point to point. Would not recommend this professor to anyone. I am honestly not sure how she is able to teach as I spent most of the lecture trying to figure out what shes sayin
Very accessible during office hours, and quick replies to e-mails, even on weekends. Although can over-complicate concepts and be confusing during lectures at times, notes and slides are very clear and helpful. Weekly online assignments and lab quizzes, and the 2 midterm exams were very easy.
Cindy really cares about her students and wants them to succeed, unfortunately her lectures jump around a lot and are very hard to follow. However her midterms were very easy. If you are willing to teach yourself stats to get easy tests I would suggest Cindy. Overall she's not that bad, she's can just be very confusing at times..
Took stat 205 but will review under 213 as both classes are similar but 205 is easier. took 205 & You might as well teach yourself because her English is not understandable along with her poor teaching skills. I skipped to teach myself & did a better job than she could. She responds to emails vaguely. Basically, you're on your own in this class
Lectures are unorganized and she can be very confusing. Emailing her is a problem as she is vague and makes you feel stupid. Barely understand anything she says as her English isn't the best. I passed this class because I basically taught myself EVERYTHING. Midterms were easy and the final wasn't too bad. Overall won't take her class again.
Cindy is very caring and passionate about statistics. Although her lectures are mediocre and her speaking can be confusing at times, her online notes are useful and her midterms are EXTREMELY EASY. As long as you COMPLETE and UNDERSTAND the assignments, the exams are pretty much the same type of questions. What you get is what you put in.
Not very knowledgable. She can not teach this course very well because I think, she does not have enough knowledge about it.
Cindy has a very thick accent and is hard to understand at times. Apart from this, so long as you take note of her example questions in class, it is an easy A course. Midterms were easy but beware of a tough final.
Sometimes difficult to understand, which is unfortunate in a subject that relies on semantics. There were 8 assignments that took 2-3 hours each, but only worth 10% in the end. Labs have quizzes. MiniTab is used heavily throughout the semester, but then you DON'T GET TO USE IT ON THE FINAL. Prepare for your grade to go down after the final.
Don't know what's the use of paying the tuition when all you do in this course is TO TEACH YOURSELF. Useless lectures, you won't learn a thing from it. You will end up SPENDING MOST OF YOUR TIME trying to understand and teach yourself. You won't have time to even study for your other classes especially those major ones coz it's so time consuming.
Cindy wants you to do well, which is what a lot of other reviews leave out, she is flexable and i think she is aware of her troubles with explaining topics in statistics, she gives easy midterms and she even gives you marks back if you just talk to her! If you do have her i suggest you get to know her. I hadan 80 on a midterm and she inc it to a 98
Her lectures jump around a lot and are very hard to follow. Very unorganized lecture notes and not enough examples.
I was hesitant at first to start in Cindy's class as I had heard terrible things. From my experience, these things are wrong. I'll agree, sometimes her lectures are hard to follow and she does go through the material quickly. In her class, it is your job to keep up. You have to study. Also very important is to get to know her. Go to office hours!!
She's honestly not a bad prof at all, she goes through practice questions for all test material in class 123023094 times before the actual exam and is VERY clear on what she expects, material is very easy and though she does have an accent if you just pay attention it's easy to follow... her notes are extremely clear and easy to understand too
Barely could understand Cindy and she was very harsh on students who asked questions even though she talked very fast and had a very strong accent. Her midterms were easy since she gives the questions ahead of time but her final is SO HARD. Midterms are a walk in the park compared to the final. Get 100% on all the assignments to do well.
I admit Cindy's lectures were hard to follow, but it's not necessary to attend. Her notes are SO clear that you're able to learn the material yourself (effort obviously required). She replies to emails right away and is caring. Her midterms were easy and she is an easy marker. You'll go into the final with a high grade. I recommend her 100%.
Taught different topics that what was on the rubric and her methods were different than how the class was intended and how other classes were taken. That ended up being extra work during finals. Pretty heavy accent that took some time to get used to.
Her midterms are easy as she gives you a heads up on what she will put on them during lectures, and is an easy marker. She also gives most of the tophat answers in lectures, which makes for a free 2.5-3%. The final was heavily based on what the other lecture learned (Jim Stallard's class), but is manageable if you look at his online notes and labs.
When people tell you not to take any class with Cindy Sun LISTEN!! She is an awful prof who doesn't care about her students. When students would ask questions in class and she would listen to the student, the proceed to ignore the students question and move on with the lecture. She is not very organized and you will end up teaching yourself!
Her midterms are easy but not the best at communicating the material. She often goes on about things that we don't need to know, which is confusing. But tests are easy. Labs aren't overly helpful either. Everything gets posted on D2L, so notes and assignments are accessible which was very helpful.
Professor Sun gets a lot of hate and I don't understand why. Her notes are super clear and she posts everything on D2L. She gives you 2 practice midterms for each midterm and they are EASY. She gives answers to all tophat questions for an easy bonus 3%. Final is tougher but not by much. She is very caring and I would love to have her again.
Cindy Sun gives pretty good manual lecture notes that she posts on D2L and does her best to explain but I found her hard to approach with questions. She's nice and can be funny in lectures but almost seems uninterested when answering questions outside of class. This is just my personal experience though. I also hate math.
Honestly, she is nice and all and her midterms are easy but her midterms are easy compared to her final. Her final is worth 45% so you have to make sure your grade is super high before doing that final or else you have a chance of failing. It is hard to understand her in class and she will waste time teaching you things you don't have to know.
She was a decent professor and her tests were not too bad.
She was okay, didnt really know how to explain the material in different ways. Have to teach yourself the material,
Cindy's midterms are SOOO easy compared to her final. The practice midterms are very helpful so make sure you do those. Her manual lecture notes are also quite helpful considering you're going to have to use those to teach yourself anyway. She is not very easy to approach outside of class and basically dismisses your questions very rudely.
She's a professor who's heart is in the right place. However, when it comes to teaching the material she struggles and makes it out to be much harder then it is. Personally after the 1st midterm I stopped going to class and elected to teach myself. Her notes are amazing for self learning (the whole course).
Dr. Sun was actually awesome for this course. She was very compassionate and generous with the grading and make her expectations very clear.
A prof who definitely cares for her students, but struggles to explain concepts and content in lectures. Her notes are pretty easy to understand so self teaching might be better. When emailing her, she responds quickly and tries her best to help. Final was definitely more difficult than the midterms, but not as bad as a lot of people said it was.
Her English makes it hard to understand but she isnt as bad as people say. She is a fair marker and her midterms are like the practice one she gives out. Her final on the other hand is on the harder side. Dont need the textbook either and slides are sufficient enough.
Cindy is so nice and cute and cares for her students, if you ask her for help she'll do the best she can to try and help. But she low key is not good at explaining concepts to the class. Just show up, ask questions and make friends in this class and you will do good. Also, study hard for the final.
Cindy was a very kind and funny prof! But with her, this is gonna be a self-taught class. Make friends in this class who can help you! This is a hard course if youre on your own. Read the online lecture notes, theyre great! Easy midterms. Do the assignments, practice midterms and tophat questions, you'll want a high grade going into the final.
She is a lovely woman, and cares a lot about her students; however if this is not a course that you connect with easily, then you will suffer in this course.
Cindy is not a horrible prof, although she is not great at explainingthe important concepts. Her TAs are the worst though. I went to one for homework help durring the lab and after giving me the wrong answer, the TA told me she wasn't sure and not to submit my homework until I figured it out. This is definetly a self taught course.
Honestly she's not as bad as what the previous comments say. If you listen to her carefully and follow her closely, she tries to make herself as clear as possible. She's also very fair in her grading criteria. In class she presents how she would grade your midterms. Do the assignments as they're VERY good practice. Very approachable and nice.
Lecture notes cover everything you need to know for the exams. She posts practice midterms on D2L that are almost identical to the actual midterms. You can easily ace the exams by memorizing the questions. She is a fair marker, accessible outside of class, and she truly wants her students to excel.
I am frustrated with this course. Cindy is a kind person and she has good powerpoint slides that can be helpful, but she struggles when it comes to explaining the material. I ended up purchasing the optional textbook because I couldn't figure out what was going on. I found her hard to understand and not incredibly helpful outside of class.
Pretty good. The only thing I recommend is to make sure you are solid on previous material before coming to lecture.
Her midterms are so easy if you do the practice midterms (they are basically the same). You can easily get 100 on both of them and that is 35% of your grade. If you have to take stats do it with Cindy! She always answers emails about the assignments and will do her best to help you succeed.
Honestly I believe Cindy Sun gets too much slack. Yes, there were moments where I was frustrated because I had to teach myself everything but her easy midterms made me so thankful to have had her as my prof. Students in other sections were complaining about how difficult their midterms were.
Cindy is a nice person, not a great lecturer or communicator in the slightest. I attended almost every lecture and even when I tried to pay attention I felt very confused. Luckily her slides are definitely sufficient for studying, midterms are very easy, and final was actually quite fair. Just be prepared to review and teach yourself most material.
Cindy is a very nice person and accessible outside of class, however, her lectures are quite confusing and I had a pretty hard time understanding the concepts she was trying to explain. Her powerpoints are good though, and midterms are insanely easy so that was a plus. As long as you keep up with the slides and do the assignments, you'll be good
She deserves way more credit than people give her. Cindy's lecture notes are super organized, very easy to follow and she answers questions clearly. You have to put in effort to do well but that's because stats is hard, not because the teacher is bad.
Honestly, I think she changed a lot since a lot of students were complaining about her teaching style. Yes, it's difficult to understand her during the lectures; however, her notes are pretty comprehensive. Midterms are easy if you do the practice midterms that she provides. Final is fair, I don't find it too difficult. 8/10 GJ Cindy!
If you go to class you will know what exactly to expect on the midterms and final, they are easy. She posts her lecture slides from beforehand and posts all her handwritten notes from class. Her accent is easy to understand after a few classes. As long as you go over the content after class it is not that bad
She can't teach, if you ask a question about how to do a calculation by hand, she will reply "I don't know, google it", if you ask how to use MiniTab she replies "thats beyond the scope of this class". Doesn't explain the formulas. Doesn't know what a prime number is. Tutorial TA's are useless. Forces use of Minitab for assignments. Unapplicable
Awful professor, classes are a waste to attend, she is awful at teaching.
Taking this class, I was pretty nervous due to comments about her. But she's actually pretty good. Although, she has an accent, her midterms are easy A's and assignments are easy. She replies to emails super fast and as long as you attend class and try, you pass. With that said, her lab TA's are useless and don't understand the course very well.
Cindy is really nice, but a bad prof. Her notes are very clear, but her explanations are so hard to understand and often left me even more confused. She gives 1-2 responses by email. Tutorials were terrible. However, Cindy's tests are quite easy, and pretty much identical to the practice ones. If you put in effort outside of class you'll pass.
This girl is litterally the stupidest prof I have every had the misfortune of having. And, no, I'm not using stupid as an insult, but a fact in her case. LACKS SOOOOOO MUCH KNOWLEDGE. Didn't learn anything despite my grade >:(
One word, "sucks". I never understand anything she says in class, and EVERY TIME I ask her a question, she drowns into confusion and can never explain anything right. Avoid her if you want to learn anything about stats.
Her notes are horrible, her lectures are confusing, her tests questions are not very specific and her grading style is very unfair. Avoid, avoid, AVOID....
Although she's not the most exciting prof out there, she does a good job of teaching the course. She gives very detailed notes so if you go over those you will be set for the tests. The labs are useless and not mandatory. There are a couple projects in this course but she grades those and the tests very easy
Her accent is a little difficult to understand at first but you get used to it. Her notes are very easy to follow and she goes through so many problems and examples to make sure you know what you are doing. Her midterms are even easier than the assignments (final is fair though, would not say it is easy). Pay attention in class!
My least favorite professor. Quizzes were held every Monday, but they were rarely on the content that was learned the week before. It was usually from 2/3 weeks previous. One time she forgot to send out a lesson so she sent it on Sunday and we were quizzed on it on Monday. She is very hard to follow and not easy to work with.
She didn't post any lectures all semester. We had to read the textbook and she used material from another professor's page (not even from UofC). The only meetings we had were when we had to present, so she never prepared anything but we were expected to. The course itself was so easy, if you want an easy A take it but don't expect to learn anything
Her lectures were easy to follow, but she just read her notes back to us. She also did some exemplar questions in her lectures, but the questions on the quizzes were usually different and more complicated. But she was extremely understanding when she had mistakes in her quizzes and tests and she multiplied our final marks by 1.05.
Cindy's notes were great and easy to follow along but her lab manual was hard to follow if you do not watch the lectures. Midterms and quizzes were easy and very similar to lab questions. Bump your grade up with the assignments, quizzes, and midterms because the final is tough. Definitely need to put in the work to do good and learn material though
In terms of STAT205 content, it was not as hard as I expected it to be, HOWEVER, Cindy does not do a good job at explaining during her lectures. We usually had at least 4 if not 5 fifty minute lectures per week which honestly could've been summed up in a single lecture. I found her manual notes hard to read and the final was tougher than expected.
Honestly, Dr. Sun is way better then the reviews on here say. Her lectures are informative and essentially cover all of the information you need to know for the midterms. Her assignment questions/prelab exercises give you good opportunities to prepare for quizzes and exams. Her final was really difficult, but she was a good prof overall.
Personally I think her lectures were lengthy and very difficult to understand. I think the lecture notes and manual notes were very helpful. Lastly the class doesnt allow you to look over the quizzes to see what you did wrong. Unless you go to office hours. Which can be difficult if you have a tight schedule. Over all shes an ok professor.
Cindy is understanding and kind, 5 weeks into class I realized I had been missing weekly assignments worth 10% of our grade and she reopened them for me to do for full credit. This class very challenging, especially the final exam. Her lectures were completely useless for me, I went to tutoring weekly instead. If you put in effort you'll pass!
The lectures were not helpful, she would spend the entire lecture going through the manual way to solve problems and then at the end say dont do this the rounding will be wrong you have to use a software? Feedback was also hard to access, and I had multiple questions marked wrong because I did it the way she told us (only fixed because I caught it
Lectures are prerecorded, which makes it very hard to follow along and ask questions. She isn't very accessible outside of class; she takes multiple days to get back to emails and isn't very clear with feedback.
Lectures were recorded and were difficult to understand. She wasn't very accessible outside of class. Questions on quizzes and term exams are phrased poorly and ambiguously. I found this course very hard and it required a ton of effort. Friends of mine had other stats professors and had far better experiences, they even described the course as easy
The class was entirely online and the lectures were prerecorded. Try to take STAT 213 in person if you can, even if you think you will receive a better grade online.
Had an asynchronous course with her. The course material are very vague and unhelpful. Questions for the tests are mostly stuff that she never taught. Never take class with her.
Her lectures were prerecorded but to be honest I stopped watching them when I realized that they just made me more confused. Her powerpoint notes are pretty much enough to teach yourself the course. Spending more time learning by doing assignments and lab quizzes benefited me more than sitting through her prerecorded lectures.
Professor Sun is a fairly good/average teacher in my opinion. I had her for 429 & 425. 429 was more lecture heavy, with harder tests, while 425 was mostly self-study from the textbooks with chapter example videos. If you have the option to choose, I'd recommend taking her class if it's more assignment-based than test-based.
Everything in Dr. Sun's class was asynchronous; the lectures were boring, and the tests were extremely difficult. The practice questions/homework were FAR easier than what was on the graded tests. The lectures made little to no sense. She has an accent that can be difficult to understand, and I had to rely on the TA's for almost everything I did.
1. very unorganized. 2. I have no idea what she is saying even with live transcription on. 3. horrible for visual and kinesthetic learners. 4. Exams are VERY difficult. Even though I used all the resources provided, I still wasn't prepared enough for the tests. 5. Moves way too fast.
Her lectures were good, she did her best to make them interesting and make the material applicable to the real world. She was also very generous by extending exam time limits when asked, and changing the grading to allow our highest scoring exams to take some of the weight from the lowest. Everything on the assessments was taught in the lectures.
I've never cried from frustration prior to taking Cindy's course. Today I did. She's awful at teaching. Her lecture style is all over the place, assumes your iq is similar to hers, and typically focuses on redundant formulaic points while ignoring core concepts. Find alternatives to learn topics online. Class is awful. She's a vgood person tho.
with the examples, she does not do a good job of explaining them. it seems like shes just doing them just to go through them and not to actually TEACH the concept. u can teach urself the content with yt vids, much more helpful imo. if u have never done stats whatsoever, good luck. tests all online. however, she is a very nice and respected person.
To be honest I found her lectures very hard to follow as she always came to class unprepared. Fortunately, her notes are relatively easy to understand which makes the assignments easy-ish. As for communication, she is straightforward to get a hold of which is convenient. Overall would not take one of her classes again, but it was manageable.
I dont think its fair to judge her based on her english speaking abilities. The lecture slides are okay, she moves fast in class, leaving most confused. she responds to emails fast. no need to go to class, just watch yt vids.
Cindy seems like a super sweet person, however her lectures were hard to follow and I ended up not going to most so be prepared to teach yourself the content. Her videos she posts are fairly helpful and she replies to emails very fast. She did make the final fairly difficult compared to all the other quizzes. Overall it was a pretty easy class
She's a very kind lady however she teaches concepts horribly and I stopped attending lectures after the third week. She's very hard to follow and understand. The classes is certainly doable with her but find another professor if you can.
This professor was terrible! I couldn't understand anything she would say in class and she made the course harder than it seemed to be. Her communication style was ineffective, while the lab exercises were due within one day of opening. She would shut down questions that were related to content during class. Avoid her at all costs!
Lectures always seemed rushed, and questions during lecture were often left unanswered. The time in lecture spent on irrelevant info (theory) far outweighed covering material that was on assessments (R code). Her English skills did not help either.
This is the worst class I have ever taken. Not only was the content disorganized, but there was not even a study guide prepared for the final. When you have a few hundred pages of the professor's slide presentation to read and everything is cumulative, it is helpful to have a study guide. This class was a chaotic disaster.
She can't teach to save her life.
No good good... I mean no offence, I am also a Chinese and struggling on English but as a professor, she really needs to work on her English... As well as teaching style, this course is basically high school level but feels like rocket science being delivered by her.
She is cooperative and soft hearted
She's very hard to understand since she speeds through everything and is not engaging whatsoever. It made learning the content much harder and I often found it frustrating how confusing she made a topic after I learned the topic myself. You're just gonna have to teach yourself to do well. But overall, the class itself isn't too bad.
speeds through lecture and it's hard to pay attention
Difficult class
She goes through content really fast but her slides are pretty understandable. Her accent is fine; I didn't have any difficulty understanding her. She tries to be engaging and she's nice :)
Never seemed confident in course content, and would start many lectures by having to clear up mistakes from previous lectures. Every class example was literally her doing a question with no explanation of what we were doing and why you do it that way. Most unengaging lectures ever, which made it impossible to try and learn as we went. Disappointing
Avoid if possible. If not possible, do not attending lectures, as she confuses students with her meandering lecture style. She does not teach new concepts clearly, and gives very few examples. She is never prepared for lecture. There is nothing to be gained by listening to her teach in class. She should not be teaching.
STAT213 was so irredeemably disorganized and ill-planned this semester. The lack of consistency in the planning, marking and on-the-fly change of deadlines felt disrespectful and was inconsiderate towards the class. Really felt like the syllabus was useless as most of the course is just at her whims.
She is pretty terrible at teaching, and making tests, and grading, and informing students about exams, and uploading notes, and making sure students learn and pass the course. Oh wait - thats everything shes supposed to do! Might be the worst that UofC has to offer, and I sincerely hope that she improves.
Bingrui is very unorganized & condescending during lecture, teaches at a middle school level, and gives out misleading exams. During lecture she'll call out people's names to answer questions and will give out pop quizzes for attendance. Her exams are A-E and say, "If answer is not here put your own." She's infuriating at this level.
This class was incredibly difficult to get through. Lots of errors in lectures, requiring lectures to be re-recorded and you had to watch them later (a second completely different 1+ hour lecture) to be able to get the correct info. Threatened to report students for harassment for asking simple questions, ignored emails. avoid if possible
Poor quality lectures, outdated, very repetitive, and gets sidetracked often about irrelevant topics. She does not explain what is expected for assignments and changes her mind about what she is looking for while you are working on completing the assignment. If you take her class I would suggest just going off of the rubric that is given.
This class had potential; however, it was really frustrating to take as the professor was not present. There were no posted lectures, and often the links she directed us to were links we did not have access to or were taken down. She did not respond to student emails, so this issue never got resolved. I would not recommend this class.
Lectures are horrible, online videos teach better than her. Lack of resources to study for the test. She makes the course 10 times harder than it's supposed to be. Other professors have each the course way better, and the way they explain the course material is better. Her way of explaining is super complicated, compared to other profs Ridiculous
DONT TAKE THIS PROF. overall this would've been one of the easiest classes but this prof doesn't explain things very well. hard to understand. lectures are pointless. group participation really matter if u wanna pass.
Terrible lectures, just reads off extremely wordy documents and doesn't explain anything very well. The documents themselves are pretty useful, so I would just read those and not attend lectures. The tests are fairly easy and the grading on the two projects is super lenient. Prof sucks but the course itself isn't as hard as it might seem.
Absent minded, unreasonable expectations, not accessible. Exams asked for answers which were only skimmed over and processes which were never discussed. Doesn't post classes nor student list so good luck getting notes if you miss class and don't miss too many or you'll literally fail. She's often late or missed class herself.
Could I have done this class strictly off lecture slides? Probably. But I don't blame her though, it's hard to make the slides interesting if the whole class consists of interpreting R code and lay out all the assumptions, etc. Make sure you pick a good group for your project though.
Bingrui often cancelled class and it felt like she didn't really care about her students. for the final exam there was no outline and she never mentioned about needing to date each lecture slide in order to reference properly. Didn't answer emails regarding questions about the final.
She seems like a good person, however, she isn't the greatest instructor and a middle schooler could pass the class. I'm still waiting on grades for a course that ended a month and a half ago.
I should have taken a look at this website before enrolling in her class
The worst professor in the world!!!! Definitely, you won't learn anything from her class. She only reads from her slides and doesn't also give a good mark to you.
The midterm is so confused, hard, and not related to the theory and practice problems she provided to us at all. She said we should ask for mental health professionals if we feel anxiety, but never introspect why all students feel anxiety. She always believes it is other person's fault, but when all students in class feel uncomfortable......
Truly inspiring how Professor Sun manages to turn even the most straightforward topics into an enigmatic labyrinth of confusion. The syllabus alone was a literary masterpiece like a puzzle wrapped in a riddle, soaked in mystery. Every lecture is an intellectual adventure where comprehension is optional and frustration is guaranteed.
Her syllabus is impossible to follow and her instructions are always unclear. We were bombarded with endless, pointless tasks—group work, random assignments, discussions, quizzes, tests—none of which seemed to have a clear goal.
Horrible instructor, used words I could not find in the dictionary or in the English Literature Glossary of Terms. Worst teacher in five years at UofC.
Get ready to teach yourself everything! She doesn't respond quickly, is condescending, and expects you to already know everything. Her tests almost never have anything to do with what she teaches. This class will drain you of your mental and emotional energy. Take anyone else!
I'm writing this review because I don't want others to go through what I did. She lacks basic compassion and treats students with an unjustified level of suspicion. I hope this helps the next student make a better choice.
So hard to follow lectures. Had to take the course with a different prof and understood it so much better
She is a professor that enjoys very tricky questions. I attended all of her lectures and she spends majority of the time away from course content, delving into history behind math instead of the syllabus content. Her ability to convey the material was very poor and I learned everything from watching other lecturers.
I still have nightmares cuz of this class but I would spend a majority of my Sunday doing work for this class to the point where i couldn't enjoy it. On top of that, the rubrics and assignments were very unclear and overcomplicated. On top of that, the grading scale is very unforgiving and she wants low avgs.
Her lectures are super confusing though, and if you don't have a strong background in mathematical statistics, this class would be very difficult. There's a huge curve at the end for good reason.
Do not take this class unless you're looking to get an unfairly low grade. I average between 80 and 85 for most science-based exams. This class? 65. Her expectations are insanely unreasonable for a 200 level class. Avoid if possible.
Hands down worst professor. Rude, incompetent, disrespectful, inconsiderate & cold. Lectures are long and useless, midterms and finals are very long. Project requirements are very few yet she grades you on criteria not even on the rubric? Takes long to reply to emails, unprofessional and rude. When asking for help she will laugh and belittle you.
She knew absolutely nothing about what she was teaching; her lectures consisted of showing code and repeatedly saying that we should use AI to get detail and answer. The exam involved explaining R code, the only practice question was a past midterm that was so easy it was practically useless. I had no idea what to review or how to review.
Cindy is my queen. In any course with her (ex: 429, 425, 523), you are given creative freedom for the projects. Her teaching is a bit light on theory, but she does lots of examples. Biggest tip is to not use datasets from Kaggle in her courses: she values originality and project-appropriate data. Have fun and don't take things too seriously!
She's nice, but got more passive aggressive over the term. Can't blame her really, since everyone stopped showing up to lectures. Exams are easy enough, as the content is not very challenging.
I'm very confused by this course. I truly felt I knew the material very well, but did horrible on the final exam. Her questions are vague, but require specific responses, and could be a tiny detail in her giant (and not good) note packages. Tutorials just went over class material, and didn't really enhance it. Just not great overall
The course was easy and focused on outdated stat tests. But the final was harder with data formats completely different from the assignments. The registrar double-booked the exam room, so there weren't enough seats. Overall, okay, but I'm not sure where I will ever use what I learned in this course
