Chem 317 was just an advisory class for those who were taking Chem 300. Overall, he did a good job on going over subjects that were discussed in Chem 300. At times, he goes more in depth which gave me more understanding of the concepts more than my Chem 300 professor. Hopefully, he teaches a higher Chem class because I would definitely take him.
Chem 317 was an advisory so class wasn't so hard. He just basically gives us workshops involving the topics we covered in Chem 300. He's good at clarifying and will always help if you need it. He's a great professor and I think the only problem others might have with him is his strong accent. As for myself, I understand him fluently.
I learned more from his chem 317 class than I ever did from my chem 300 class. In additional lectures helps you understand the topic better. Classes are once a week. Each week you earn 10 points for attended and 50 points for completing the workshop. Workshops are graded on completeness rather than correct answers.
This Professor is outstanding! He works hard himself, and goes the extra mile to help anyone in his class understand. He gives very good examples and most importantly, knows exactly how to break down concepts into smaller steps, and keeps class discussions on track. Enthusiastic and motivating teacher! Take any chem class you can from him.
Hands down the BEST Chemistry teacher EVER! Chem isn't the easiest subject, but he really knows how to make concepts easy and clear. He also teaches you neat ways of memorizing things. I hope he teaches chem 400 and the O-chem series because I would really like to have him again. Take him!
Worst professor I have had.
Professor Dao was outstanding! His lectures were very clear and pertinent to the subject matter. No curve balls on tests. In fact, his lectures were so good that I hardly had to reference my text book. I highly recommend him!
Great Professor! He does the lecture notes with you so it's always the perfect speed. There are quizzes once a week that are straight from the lecture so make sure you are studying the whole time, not just before the test. I got an A and didn't open my textbook once!
Prof. Dao is new to teaching and it shows. he has best intentions for students but hasnt found a teaching style that works for him. When you ask for help he blames it on you saying its your fault you dont understand. SPEEDS thru lectures, offers "chem cafe" but isnt flexible to the students who cant make the set date. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE
Avoid at all cost. Class test averages were about 50% for the first 2 exams. He likes to rush through lecture and assigns a ridiculous amount of hwk online. Don't take him unless you want to know what failure feels like.
Prof Dao is the MOST OUTSTANDING chemistry professor. he did a great job teaching us chemistry. he is always very encouraging, motivating, available to help, and goes the extra miles for his students. make sure you attend the chemistry cafe. don't slack off and you will get the grade you deserve. HIGHLY recommend him to those wanting to learn.
It's a tough class, and it would be with any teacher. Dr. Dao uses a generous grading scale and makes himself very available during his office hours. He cares about students doing well and his quizzes test what he has taught. You have to stay on top of the material.
Avoid. Although he want you to learn, he doesn't know how to help you. He speeds thru lectures a lot, which consist material that needs slow explanation. Offer chem cafe to give students some additional help but isn't flexible to those that can't make it. Take him if you are already familiar with O Chem, or else take someone else if you are new
Professor Dao was a great professor. He makes you work for your grade, but it is totally worth it at the end. He provides his own lectures through print out, which means the book was barely used unless for further clarity. He is over and above on helping out his students and will slow down if you ask. I would take him again. STUDY is the key!
Very helpful and wants you to pass but also a very hard class. Only downfall is he is not very good understanding the DSPS system. But is overall a pretty good teacher.
Seriously the sweetest most genuine professor. He cares so much about his students. It's chemistry so of coarse it's gonna make you pull your hair but he makes it all worth it. He brings coffee and cookies for his students to study sessions held once a week. If you show you care and study a bit he rewards those who stick till the end!!! (FLC)
Dao is one of the best chem teachers on campus. He have an accent , but his lectures are great. He is the type of teacher that works hard to help his students. When you go to his office he will answer all your questions. His quizzes & slides will prepare u for exams. He is a must take . I think he is cool and awesome.
Professor Dao is an excellent professor. He has printouts during lecture for you to take notes and they make studying easier. There is homework and a quiz sometimes every week. There are no curveballs on the exams, just study hard and you will do fine. He is very helpful during office hours and he will answer all your questions. I recommend him.
Great lectures although can be dense. Hard subject and you MUST put in the time. An A is possible but there are a lot of components from online hw, supplemental hw, online quizzes, discussion, and lab reports. Quiz once a week. He is challenging but pretty fair. Adorable guy that I would hang out with
If you want to learn Chemistry, and build a solid foundation, take him. His test may be challenging, but if you put in the time and work, you can get an A. "You are here to learn how to study, once you learn that, you will be successful" -Binh Dao Something along those lines haha
Dao is a very thorough teacher. He is strict & class is hard, but he gives you plenty of tools to help with clarification. When he says study a lot & spend time completing all the work/practice problems, it really is true. His supplemental lecture packet is organized really well and helpful. He is extremely knowledgable. Can also be really funny!
He's an amazing professor! Though he is strict and pushes us a lot, it really does give you a strong background in chemistry! He's very helpful but his class is a lot of work. Be prepared to spend a lot of time studying.
Your grade is based on how hard you work. He will warn you about that and he is right. He is very happy to help you during office hours and chemistry cafe. Go to Beacon tutoring, keep up with the work, and you'll be fine. He wants you to do well and offers lots of extra credit. I find chemistry very difficult and still managed an A.
At times he is difficult to understand but overall he is a pretty good professor. In my class we spent a bit to much time on the first couple chapters leaving the last few to be rushed through. Only take this class if you are able to invest a good amount of study time. Good luck!
I took Dao for both Chem 300 and 400. Lectures are easy to follow and gives lecture handouts to help with studying. He explains things clearly during his office hours. The most important thing about this class it to STUDY! Tests and quizzes are multiple choice. You can easily get a "B" or an "A" if you just put in the time. Cool guy. Take him!
Be prepared to work a bare minimum of 10 hours a week outside of class if you want to pass. Dao provides notes for every lecture and is very thorough in his teaching, but he expects you to put significant time into studying. Seek outside resources such as tutoring to help you (he even gives you extra credit for it) and you will do well.
I went to class/lab every week and thought that I understood the material, but his tests were a complete curve ball. Even went to beacon tutoring and was told that Dao teaches completely different than tests. I put in 25 hours a week to study for the test, took the test feeling confident, and got a D on the test... I was disappointed
Wayyy to much crap to do. D2L quizzes, supp HW, and discussion WS should all be removed or made optional. They are pointless and time wasters. Almost always keeps students after class time (this is VERY infuriating). His exams are not based on chapters but rather lecture #s, making them very unorganized compared to a standard class.
Dao, if you're ever reading this: Please get rid of D2L quizzes and supplemental homework or at the very least just make them optional. They are pathetically pointless. 5 points for like 2-4 hours of work and over 50+ questions A WEEK. Seriously? Would you want to drive 3 hrs each week to pick up a bag of potatoes? Yeah, well neither do we.
Great Professor, clear and inspiring lectures, discussions and labs. Harder than Chem 300, but easier than my other classes (the 400 series in math and physics). An ideal amount of homework except that copying down the pre-lab doesn't increase lab preparedness. Grades discussions by group despite not giving enough time to check group-mates accuracy
Dr. Dao is a wonderful person and cares about his students. He has a great sense of humor and will work with you if you have a good attitude and put in the effort. That being said, this is a difficult class with a lot of content to cover. Roughly 20 hours of work a week outside of class, which include lab, discussion, homework and study time.
Straight up most inspirational professor ever. He wants you to pass. You have to do the work, but all the info is in lecture. Take him.
Yes, there is a lot of homework, but if you do the assignments, the exams will be much easier. Although I had a hard time with the homework, I was able to sail through exams thanks to it. You will have to put in a lot of hours, but he sets everything up to help you do well. Take advantage of extra credit - he gives a lot.
This is a true 5 unit chemistry class. There's no way you can just go through the motions. Lots of graded work. Actually checks discussion/HW/pre&post labs for completion and accuracy. Expect to stay until the last second of class. I was way more prepared for 401 than others who had easier prof's for 400. Premed/bio/chem majors should take Dao.
Hard work for his classes, but ready to help. It's all about your effort; if you are willing to do the HW and discussions and attend lectures, you'll pass exams easy.
Professor Dao is hands down the worst professor I have ever had. Does not give timely feedback on quizzes, lab reports, and homework. Expects a students to be experts in course material without practice. Dao is a nice guy, but don't take him for Chemistry. His expectations are too high.
tough but fair. recommend to students. Great lectures and learned so much from Dr. Dao. He is really inspiring and makes it clear you must work hard. I have never taken chemistry before but still got A. there is three exams, decent amount of hw, weekly quiz and a final. Extra credit opportunities that will help your grade. Really great class
Think twice before choosing this professor. This professor has very high expectations for his students. He excepts them to know everything even though this class is an intro to Chemistry. He gives quizzes every single day even though the class voted to not have them daily. Since this professor has an accent, sometimes it is hard to understand him.
This professor gives way to much homework and he expects it to be turned in the next day. His lectures are boring. There is minimal pictures to help the student learn. Sometimes he tries to describe us something and it is hard to imagine it without any visuals. Plus, he rushes through lectures and is a tough grader. Take my word for it, think twice
Professor Dao's classes are hard, however, they will give you the fundamental knowledge you need to succeed in future classes. Homeworks are a lot, quizzes are hard, however, if you utilize his office hours, take the time to do the homework and do some more researches on your own, then an A is not that hard.
Took his summer Chem 300 class. Lectures are very clear and he teaches very well and thoroughly. We had a quiz everyday which was difficult but if you study hard you will do fine! Do ALL of the extra credit -- it will pay off and help your grade so much! No joke, studies outside of this class at least 20 hours on my own. Difficult but very do-able
This teacher has young and has a lot of ego. He seem to want to prove that he can hold his water to other teachers at the cost of his students. He does not give that many A but mostly B and C. Beware not worth it. Take it with someone else.
This is a class the is the equivalent of two CHEM400 classes combined at the same. The tests are very difficult and the lab exams are also difficult. His big EGO doesn't allow him to teach in a manner to make the students feel successful. I always feel like I should drop this class. It seems like he doesn't want you to succeed. He seem to compete!
Tough but fair course work; however, I found Dr. Dao quite discouraging and unapproachable. He often fails to understand straightforward student questions. Many materials are filled w/ errors. Tells inappropriate jokes. Publicly ridicules diligent students. Laughs as you struggle. Verbal pop quizzes promote anxiety, not genuine desire to learn.
The teacher seem to know his stuff but he doesn't know how to teach. He is not approachable and if you ask him a question he looks right past you. Average grade in his class is a C. He doesn't give that many A in his class. I would take it with some one that cares a little more. GL
I had Dr Dao for CHEM300&400 and he is an amazing professor. I learned so much from him and I am doing very well in my upper division chemistry courses at UCD. Prof Dao's courses are not for whiners. You don't have to be smart to get A's in his class, but you have to actually spend time studying. 10+ hours a week.
I am taking his chem 400 class which is a 8 week class. We are at the end of the semester now and a little more than half of the students have dropped the class already. Not that many As given. Avoid him if you can.
It's interesting reading all the reviews on here-- clearly not many people have had experience with competent professors. Dr. Dao is inspirational, intelligent, and a great teacher. Yes, sometimes he's hard to understand. He won't give out A's unless they're deserved. But he absolutely 100% does care. If you want to learn and learn well, take him.
Prof Dao has a THICK accent, but he KNOWS it and tries to work around it. Unlike some professors, the difficulty in this class has more to do with the density of the information he conveys, rather than the obtuseness of the instructor. Honestly one of the better professors I have had, over the past 8 years!
Thick accent, but decent teacher. Tons of extra credit, but not a reason to skip assignments. Tests are multiple choice + free response. Without solid algebra background, may be difficult. Textbook offered digitally; never needed since fill-in-yourself notes was mandatory purchase. Don't expect easy class, but prof very open to helping if you need.
The best Chemistry professor in the Los Rios District. His lectures were very clear, and he made sure that we understood everything. I highly recommend this professor. He offers a lot of extra credit. Make sure to pay attention in class and study a lot. I took his 8 week CHEM 300 & 8 week CHEM 400 class.
He's very honest, keeps it 100% real with you from the start that if you don't work your butt off you won't do well in this class. He also makes it abundantly clear that while this class can be hard as heck, if you study and do all of the homework you will do fine. He can be a bit strict at times, but really it's because he cares a lot.
Honestly he did give a-lot of homework to do. But I'm taking Chem 400 over the summer and I have to admit he really does prepare you for future upcoming chemistry classes. He always seems to be open to question and he's straight up about your grade.
Where do I begin. I took Dao for chem 300 and barely passed. He is not a good teacher. He doesnt explain things to where you understand. You will have to do these stupid 5x3x1 notes that take up way too much time, and he wont let you leave lab early, he says its not fair to others. If you dont study at least 15 hrs a week your screwed.
Professor Dao is the best chem professor you will ever encounter. You need to be ready to work tho!!! But good luck.
Took this awesome guy for Chem 300 and just took Chem 400 with him and finished my final today! Dao is hands down the BEST for chemistry. His exams are tough as heck, and he makes you work for your grades. But he is always uplifting his students, because he cares THAT much. He may come off harsh, but it's because he wants his students to excel.
I've had Dao for three semesters, when I first took him I took his 8 week 300 class and I did horrible. But then I took him for 300 again and my perspective changed, he is a tough grader but he is just very passionate when it comes to teaching chemistry properly, I learned to love chem and after taking his advice I earned an A
Dao generally cares about your success but you must earn it, he puts in extra time to make sure his students succeed. He has plenty of office hours and does chem cafe "free tutoring". He does give out plenty of homework and it seems like a lot but the class itself is a lot of work. You must put in the work!!
An amazing professor. 1 of the best on campus and the best chemistry prof I've taken. Honestly don't listen to the negative reviews. Chem isn't easy. His exams are too hard ONLY if you DON'T put in hard work. Otherwise, they are reasonable. He really cares about his students and goes above and to offer his time to help you succeed and really cares.
Great professor, really passionate about teaching , also really funny.
Seriously, he spends more time talking about how to study than actually teaching the class. Very arrogant
I had Professor Dao for both CHEM 300 & 400. He is a best professor in the chemistry department. His lectures are very interesting. He helps student a lot with some study tips and practice problems so you could be ready for the exams and quizzes. He's male version of OPRAH, because he's drops one low exam & quiz score & gives a lot of extra credit.
Some complain that his class is difficult but that is because he teaches a difficult class. His teaching is quite thorough though. He makes sure to go over every step and does not skip a step to maks sure that you know what you need to. His accent is THICK but understandable. Take this class if youre willing to work hard, if you're not, you'll fail
Dao is very passionate about chemistry and goes out of his way to help his students. He hosts his office hours in the tutoring lab (lh115) and gives you ec coffee and snacks if you come. He does not assign homework instead makes you rewrite your lecture notes. 1 exam 1 quiz are dropped. Attend lectures, do your notes, ask ?s and you will do fine
He is a caring professor. His lectures are easy to understand. I wish he would give traditional homework instead of 5x3x1. There's quizzes every week, 3 tests and a final exam (ACS exam.) He puts a lot of ranking questions on quizzes and exams. I would definetly take this professor again. He didnt use any book this semester. We used small greenbook
Dao excerts high confidence in his teaching. He always had an answer to your question. Weekly quizzes and HW due (known as 5x3x1) methods to help students keep up and understand the material. No curve balls on exams! Final is ACS exam so study up! As a science course you got to put in work for the grade you want. Dao makes himself accessible!!
I can not say enough how great Dao is. He is clearly passionate about chemistry which makes learning easier. I went into this class just for credit toward my degree with no interest in chemistry and came out having learned alot as well as having adopted great study techniques. He offers coffee, cookies, and credit twice a week for study help.
A word of caution: READ THE REVIEWS BEFORE ENROLLING. This class is INTENSIVE and it will HEAVILY impact your well-being. You are required to purchase both a lab+lecture packet that may take time to arrive as well as being expected to spend all of your time into the course and course material. Just do yourself a favor and find a better professor.
Only useful part of class was lectures and workshops. Homework is just for completion. Teacher went on strange, time consuming rants but continually told students that we are the reason he was behind on his lectures. lol. Must study a lot. Really good class to prepare for Gen Chem, but choose an easier class for grad/transfer requirements
expect to spend a lot of time on busy work that gets graded LATE for completion. expect to never get emails read. expect to get gaslit when you ask a question. expect to hear a lot of irrelevant stories or over explanations. tough luck if you work, you will be short on time with no compassion from the prof. expect to look up videos to learn instead
I was not a fan of him initially. He had a thick accent and seemed to be very unreasonable. However, I realized I was not used to a professor who expected us to treat the course like a full-time job. He was very informative and diligent. He responded to all my questions. There was an adjustment period for online but he figured it out.
Asynchronous online Fall 2020. 1st chem class in almost 20 years for me. Dao was an inspiration for getting me into chemistry and explaining things I in a way I could understand. I took another chem class simultaneously, and Dao was so much easier to understand than my other prof. He really wants you to understand the overarching concepts.
Dao isn't the best professor ever. He was rude to me during the semester and gaslight me when I tried to talk to him about my grade and other aspects of the class. I did more to teach myself than he did. Offers tons of extra credit though so I was able to scrape by and somehow pull an A. Would not take him again.
Prof Dao teaches a hard class, so you have to put in the effort. If you enjoy science his lectures will be very interesting. Theres about 4 hrs worth of lectures a week, and lots of homework. In all, if you pay attention, take notes, and do the work its fairly easy. He also gives TONS of extra credit. I enjoyed his class, so I would recommend!
Organic chemistry is not an extremely hard subject. But it can be if you don't have a good professor. Dao designs his class for students to exceed. There are weekly quizzes which force you to participate in the class and study. The exams are very straightforward and are basically variations of the problems he does in class. Grading is lenient.
The professor was beyond sweet and truly caring but the work was impossible. This was the only course I enrolled in and made space because I knew chem would be hard. Im used to heavy work Im an honors student but this was beyond unmanageable. The amount of work he wanted done was beyond me. Plus ITS ONLY MATH :( That's it. Where is the science??
Took 6 week online, which is hard enough on its own. He was condescending the whole time and unsupportive. Ranted off topic a lot, then complained we were behind. He would also get annoyed/defensive if we asked questions, saying we were using class time. Grades for completion, not correctness, so no feedback. Discouraging and depressing.
I recommend this professor for people who need that extra push when it comes to studying. You are asked to purchase a lab and lecture manual (2 different manuals). You fill in the lectures and turn into canvas. The way the lectures are formatted requires you to pay attention and practice the material. Prof. Does a great job explaining the material.
He assigns way too much homework and expects you to treat this one class as a full time job, even though a lot of students have other classes. Good luck if you have a part time job or work full time and go to school, you won't have the time. You will be forced to do things last second to try and keep up, in turn, not learning at all.
Grade is out of 86 to get an A. For 420 I think if you added all the possible extra credit there was about 10%(of the whole grade) if you committed everything in this class. That means you can get by with about 75% and still get an A. HOWEVER. This class is like taking 3 classes if you commit everything into it. Best Ochem professor in SCC.
Dao is the best professor for ochem. The class is very heavy and I spent most of my semester on it, but Dao offers a lot of extra credit to help grades. Quiz every Monday, lecture notes and rewritten notes every week. Ochem is a hard class, but with Dao an A is around an 85% and there is over 100 points extra credit. Also he drops the lowest exam.
Professor Dao cares about his students and wants them to pass his class. I took CHEM 300 over the summer and it was tough. Professor Dao made this very clear several times before and when class stated as not to mislead anyone. He has a strong accent but once you can get adjusted to it, he is a very knowledgeable professor.
His lectures are so roundabout and not clear cut at all, even for topics I already understood. I had to use google to explain it to me so I could understand the lecture or reassure myself that I was understanding it. Notetaking is especially a pain. Having to hand write notes and submit pictures of them is so inconvenient, as opposed to typing.
Professor Dao is a wonderful professor. He has a thick accent but annunciates really well so it is not that hard to understand. He offers tons of extra credit so as long as you do the work you can get an A. If you do not understand a topic go to his office hours and he will ensure you understand it.
3/4 class dropped. Dao's class ISN'T easy, and he warned it would be like a full-time job. 2 hrs of vid lect, a packet of "lab" HW, Pearson Mastering HW, Discussion, & short quiz. Quiz, exam, lecture, office hour, and study group have extra credit! Prof made me understand PERFECTLY! If you want to understand, TAKE HIM!!!
Professor Dao is a really nice person with much experience in the subject. You need a good professor who can help you build a strong foundation in chemistry. There is a lot of time that will be spent on homework and lectures. Quiz's and exams are lengthy and a little tricky tbh. Study the lecture notes and you will do fine.
This professor is very unorganized. His course is all over the place and the recourses he gives are not helpfull what so ever.
Far too much lecturing and homework, along with hard quizzes and exams. The amount of work he gives is simply too much, and if you have other classes + a job + a social life, do not expect to keep up with the course. The online lectures and notes are very bad. Other than his poor teaching style, he seems a decent person.
Class is difficult for the wrong reasons. Lots of work due every week. Lecture notes due Thursday, lab due Friday, hw due Sat, discussion & quizzes & extra credit due Sunday. this is every week btw. Quizzes & exams are proctored w/ software & webcam on, and grading is very slow. The material isn't hard to understand, but the workload is insane.
Professor Dao wants to us spend 20 hours at least on his subject. I dropped the class in the first 2 weeks because I felt that I wouldn't pass this class. The questions on the first test were very confusing, and he required us to buy 2 books and a chemistry kit. Take it if you don't work full-time, and don't have many other classes.
Took for CHEM421 and it was the worse. Ended up dropping because spending 20 hours a week is impossible plus the note taking was just too much. Condescending during lecture one student responded to a question and Dao just ridiculed him in front of everybody "If you're not 100% sure on something, don't say it at all" Took a toll of my mental health.
Thinking about dropping this class. He's not a mean guy per-say but the amount of homework he assigns is kind of absurd. Essentially about at LEAST 10-15 hours of work a week just to do the minimum. I know for a fact a lot of students are suffering with the amount of work given right now. If you can, take someone else and save yourself the trouble.
Save yourself and take CHEM 420/421 at another Los Rios college. Dao is crazy hard and annoying; he acts like he wants to help students but never does anything. Majority of your time is spent doing the 5-3-1 notes, prelab, and post lab so you're unprepared for quizzes and exams which leaves you guessing every time and your grades drops a lot!
Profr. Dao, is really nice and available if you should need him. He usually answers emails in 2 business days. He has a YouTube channel and his lectures were helpful. I was glad I took him bc he helped prepare me for chem 400. Now I am in chem 401. There is no cake walk in chemistry no matter who you take. You must put in the work to see results!
Dao's class is a challenge, but with dedication and using resources like Unstuck study, you can succeed. The lectures are a bit roundabout, so supplementing with external help is key. Despite the workload, the extra credit opportunities make it doable to get a solid grade.
Dr. Dao is a great professor. I took his Chem 300, Organic Chemistry I and II, and got A's in all. He's very supportive. If you attend office hours, tutoring, and do the “1,3,5 notes,” getting a B or higher isn't too hard. He made chemistry less scary and helped me succeed.
