sen rocks. cool. funny. interesting
I LOVE this professor - he is the best! Really taught me to look at media in a new way. Take a class with him - you will not be disappointed.
Really great teacher. Knowledgeable and fun on the topics
Professor Sen is an amazing teacher. He really opened my eyes as to how popular culture can be intelligently analyzed. Take as many classes with him as you can!!!
Pretty funny, makes class interesting. Gets off topic really easily and hard to study off of the study guide.
Gets off topic, very philosophical, very boring
gets off topic A LOT but still keeps the class interesting. he knows a lot about pop culture which is something you wouldn't expect from him.
Bish is pretty funny, his lectures aren't very good but he has some interesting thoughts on the world and the media
Very entertaining but gets off topic...best class I had all term!
I really loved this class.. and I do not agree that he gos off topic - he really makes us think in new ways.
Sen is an amazing professor - intellectually demanding, verbally dazzling. I would take a class with him just for the experience!
i really enjoy his class lectures and think they are incredibly useful. he is also very funny!!!
The lectures are useless but there is an attendence sheet so be sure to show up. Don't even bother trying to take notes during the class or reading the book because he posts summaries of his lectures on blackboard that are relevant to the tests. Overall it's an easy course and Bish is a very interesting little man.
He makes a dull subject very interesting and keeps class exciting. If you have to take J201, take it with SEN - you will learn something and be entertained.
Bish is a professor that will force you to think outside of the box. ENG 399 (TV Genres) was an intensely interesting course and Bish's knowledge of the material is great. If you're looking for a professor that allows you to think and doesn't believe in one right answer, register for one of his classes.
I have taken a LOT of classes in the English department and Bish's class was by far the best! He really makes it clear why cultural studies matters - his mind works at lightning speed and it is a pleasure to hear him think! And he is witty - witty - witty!!!
He's a good professor
Went to the class 7 times, total. 2 for midterms and only twice to turn in papers. the other 3 were pointless because we did literally nothing. Still can pass the class!
i loved the detective fiction class so as you are deciding, make sure you ask around. bish really made us think - i recommend this class highly
very funny and loves what he does!
Bish is an absolute riot. He is a really cool guy and makes "Mass Media & Culture" into something you can stand. He is a very funny guy who is a good professor. He is on the easy side, and his tests were very easy. He used the textbook little, which made me regret buying it. If you're a J major and have to take 201, trust me, take it with Bish Sen
This my most favorite professor in the world. Bish is totally brilliant and his wit is far out. far far out.
This professor confused me and my friends everyday with his ridiculous statements and annoying ways of teaching. The only time I learned/understood anything in this class was when we had guest speakers.
I took both eng 399 and j 201 from Bish. He is definitely one of the best professors I have ever had. His wit and intelligence propel the class into really stimulating class discussions. The analysis we learned to make has helped me in other classes too. I would take another class from him in a heartbeat.
interesting guy- somewhat funny in his own way, smart guy, wise guy, somewhat full of himself and the world in general, can be intimidating, but none the less an interesting guy.
Awesome teacher, really easy class, read the book and take notes and its an easy A! Funny guy, really interesting stuff!
One of the funniest professors I have ever had. He's really witty and very entertaining. His class is pretty interesting but he posts all his lectures online so you dont really have to go to class. The midterms are hard but not impossible. But Bish is hilarious and I'm glad he was my professor.
like really smart guy -- funny and brilliant and kind of sexy. i will take any and every class he teaches
i ADORE him. he is absolutely brilliant and hilarious. makes really boring things pop. says the smartest things ever. my roommate and i are talking about him and his ideas all the time. i made all my friends take his class and they thanked me.
I highly recommend Bish's class! I took 3 classes with him and loved them all. his sense of humor is great and helps you engage with the material provided.
great class. brilliant professor. fabulous sense of humor.
I loved this class....Bish Sen did a great job to making our having to be in class at 8:30 in the morning worth our while. He always made us laugh and was VERY easy to connect to what he was saying
very good, funny, clear
I enjoy going to class...at 8:00 AM. That right there should tell you something. Bish is hilarious, passionate (both about journalism and teaching) and just a good guy to listen to. He could make it as a stand up comic playing B level clubs just by lecturing. I seriously live this class.
Professor Sen is awesome. He made reality tv into an upper-division English class, which is no light feat. I liked how the class discussions were real class-wide discussions. It felt like we were really working with him so that as a group we could discover things about reality television. Too bad is is just going to teach Journalism form now on. :(
I hate big lecture classes, but this one was by far the best I took. This guy is hilarious.
Prof Sen is a pretty funny professor. He can actually keep people awake at 830am with his humor. Worth it. Totally fun.
Bish is the man. I took Mass Media and Society from him my first term at UO and loved it. His lectures are always interesting, and he is extremely funny as well. Plus his accent makes everything funnier
hes funny... when you can understand him. his indian accents pretty strong.
Bish Sen was a cool, funny, intersting, little man. Enjoyed the class, bit boring a times...the test are easy as long as you read the lectures on line
Bish was a great teacher. He was extremely funny, witty, and I learned a lot of interesting things in his class. We spent the whole term watching television episodes and analyzing them, which was quite interesting. I wrote my final paper on Sex in the City and got a B on it and a B+ in the class. Fun class that s also a GPA booster.
god awful, boring, and only teaches for the test!
Really easy class. If you memorize the answers to the study guide he provides, you can guarantee yourself at least a B on the test. On the other hand most of the time during the lecture he goes off on random topics that make you wonder, "why am I at this class right now?" it's even worse when you have class with him at 8am. dont take 8am class.
Most boring professor of my life. His indian accent makes him impossible to understand, and coupled with his lack of knowledge and offensive, tangental quips, he makes 8 am on monday a terrible time to be awake. Never take this class, unless you enjoy powerpoint slides with paragraphs as bullet points.
Really good teacher, has an accent but it's easy to understand he is really interesting, and i loved taking his class.
Very interesting class. The teacher is pretty funny but goes off topic a lot. This is class that can be missed because he puts all of his lectures on line. Just read the book and then study his notes before the tests and it should be an easy B. Only 3 tests and 1 paper. Not too bad
Interesting and easy class. I went to class about half the time and still got a B. His lectures were interesting and very philosophical, but he posts them online. GTF's were rude and unhelpful.
best class in j-school
Really funny guy, tests aren't too hard if you study a bit. I hardly used the book and got a good grade in the class. I would recommend him.
Awesome professor. Wish I could take his class again. He really knows what he is talking about and is funny.
Pretty interesting class. The GTF's are annoying but the tests are rather easy. The final is a combination of questions from past midterms.
best teacher i ever had and so witty and kinda hot
bish is fabulous
Professor Biswarup Sen is amazing! He has a really witty sense of humor which makes his lectures interesting. The GTF's were annoying, except one I think his name was Thomas the other two were kind of immature and seemed to mock the professor at times, not cool. I don't know why I mentioned that but yeah take this class you wont regret it.
Professor Sen is a really nice, super helpful and informative professor. His lectures are interesting and its definitely a good job to attend class because he specifically tells you what you are going to need to know for exams. He is a professor that will do whatever it takes to help you out with the material.
Bish makes class fun to go to. Best class In J school. Tests are easy if you go to class and pay attention.
J412 was easily the most entertaining class I have taken, especially with this professor! He was super funny and laid back. You watch Reality Tv Shows about 70% of this class!
Would definitely recommend Bish for J201. He is a funny guy and interesting. Only 3 tests and one essay.
I took Bish's Reality TV class. There are 4 assignments that go into your grade: "screening notes" (aka attendance), midterm, group presentation, and final paper. Really easy and super clear grading criteria. Bish is a wise, engaging, & funny guy - but his lectures are tough. He uses no visual aids so you listen to 1-1.5 hours of just him talking.
You dont need to get the textbook, but youre graded off of only 4 things in the course.
Bish is a really nice and caring professor. J201, on the other hand, was super boring. I would not recommend the class unless it's required or unless you are really fascinated by the history of media. On tests, study names and dates carefully. Pretty average class overall.
This is a very interesting class! I learned a lot in it, but the lectures had a LOT of content and I always left with my hands hurt from taking notes and writing the green slides. Get ready, it's a lot every class and he explains it fast.
Bish is super cool and clearly very intelligent. He always has funny things to say about every slide. However, I had him at 8:30 am and he constantly went off on tangents, which made it hard to pay attention sometimes.
He is realistic
Okay, J 201 is such an interesting course but Bish makes it a snooze fest. His lectures are not very engaging, slides always look like it was designed to lack creativity, moves through slides like he is racing in NASCAR, and the green slides become the cherry on top of this mess of a course. I would highly suggest not taking a course under his nam
This class should be called "History of Journalism". The content is very boring but Sen makes it fun (or as fun as it can get at 8:30 on a Monday). He's quirky and funny. If you go to class and take notes/do a quizlet you'll be fine for the tests, but the 35% paper is rough and my GTF was unforgiving. J100 is a much better intro class to Journalism
Very boring class and graded only by a few things. He curves the tests a lot so you don't really need to show up all that often. He is very funny and nice. I recommend taking this class.
This class honestly sucks. Bish mumbles a lot during lecture and his slides are extremely boring. Moreover, his GEs are of no help. Everyone either falls alseep in his lecture or has realized that they might as well sleep in their bed and skip class because if they go to class they will just fall asleep in their seat. Don't take this class.
Bish is really funny. But his lectures are so long and boring. Everyone ends up falling asleep or leaving. Attendance is not mandatory. You are only graded based off 3 exams plus a paper that's worth 35% of your grade. Unless you have to take J201 for your major or you're just really interested in the history of journalism, don't take this class
Bish was great for Media and Society. He tried to make dull material interesting by joking or using metaphors. The test questions are oddly specific, so you have to study the lecture and do the readings to do well on them. It's hard to tell what he'll ask about it, so study everything. The one essay was also enjoyable to research and write.
Bish was awful at staying on topics. His lectures are very heavy and the exams are full of multiple choice questions that are oddly specific and hard to get a decent grade on unless you memorize all the names and dates of random things. His GE gave me a C on the paper which made it hard for me to get more than a C in the class
Bish makes you feel bad for answering questions... If you don't answer exactly what he wants he WILL roast your answer. Bish goes off topic often and mumbles so its hard to understand what the necessary information is. If you give a good answer he will interrupt you and talk over you. Green slides are not posted to canvas so you should go
This guy is a beast. You can tell he is very intelligent by the way he speaks. He gets side tracked easily but that is the beauty of Professor Sen and how his mind works. He is also very witty and a very helpful teacher. One of the best professors at the UO. 10/10 would recommend. Hes dope af
The only graded things in class are exams and one research paper. He was not easy to get in contact with and will not allow you to see your test after being graded, so you do not know what areas you need to work on. There is no feedback or room for improvement. The GEs werent very helpful either.
Bish is a nice and funny character, but the lectures can be a lot. He enjoys talking and using students in examples to get his points across, but often uses up his time and has to RUSH through the slides. He posts them online but sometimes the slides are vague and you can't tell which part will be on the test. I liked this class overall.
Bish is a interesting character but a sucky professer. His lectures are rushed most of the time an the exams have such random and specific questions for things he barely covered. You have to do good on all of the exams because there's nothing to do if you want your grade raised.
he's funny without trying to be, but also says some out of pocket things. The material is pretty boring. It should honestly be called "History of Journalism." Memorize random facts and you'll pass
This class is pretty easy work wise there are three tests and one paper. The tests have specific names and dates so you will have to study. Lectures are pretty boring but Bish is a funny guy.
Overall, a great and caring professor!
Bish is a great teacher! The class itself is pretty easy: 3 tests and one paper. Attendance is not mandatory which is nice but dont take advantage of that. If you dont go to the class you will miss alot of material and not do well on the test. But Bish is fantastic!
I actually really liked him! The class is fairly easy - just 2 50 question exams and 1 four page (double spaced) essay - so overall it was pretty easy. Everything made sense and he was super organized. Grading was done by the TA's and sometimes grading was a little weird but it wasn't bad at all.
If you are going to take it online, make sure to screenshot his slides, it doesnt worth the time to write them down. Also read the slides before quizzes and exams, most stuff are from the slides(couple from the reading)! I never got full credit for discussion post, the feedback arent helpful bcuz different topic each week.
If the word boring was represented by a person, it would be this guy. The lectures were so long, and oh my god was it agonizing. Not only is the material boring, learning about code and old TVs, but hes boring too. The tests pull from random things he says super quickly, so you have to pay attention. But wow is it hard.
I loved this class and the way Prof Sen had it set up as an online class made a lot of sense and was made it easy to complete. There is a moderate amount of reading each week but nothing too bad. Test questions are from the lecture slides so take detailed notes! The final 4 page essay wasn't bad at all and could be finished in one night. 9/10
I feel like Bish is a good guy and you can really tell that he is passionate about the subjects he is teaching. Aside from the lectures being lengthy, my biggest concern was the fact that the discussion boards were graded harshly (I never got full credit) and there was no rubric or feedback given.
This professor is probably the most boring person I have ever heard speak in my entire life. I would almost fall asleep listening to his asynchronous lectures. Eventually, I just would pause on his slides and take notes, because he didn't really contribute any good information. All the info was on the slides themselves. Too much content a week too.
I wouldn't recommend J201 online because it's a lot of work, but if you do take it you can get the gist from the lecture slides and don't have to watch lecture videos. It's very tedious though.
I took an asynch class, so it was all lecture videos and slides, weekly quizzes and discussion boards. Had to put video speed at 1.5x because he talks kinda slow. Lots of required reading that isn't really referenced much (aka i didn't realize there was any until week 4). Good GEs. Only one essay. I would suggest taking this in person.
Bish is an absolute delight. He's so funny and caring about the students. Gives great feedback and is a fair grader. He wants to push your thoughts to the max to get those great ideas out of you. The class itself is super fun, you watch really funny reality tv shows and it's fun when the class laughs along.
I felt cheated by taking this course because he recorded the lectures several years ago and didn't update the material. His GEs accused me of cheating and that this class was not worth taking in any fashion. wish I never took this class. If you don't need to take this class don't do it It is a waste of time in my opinion
The weekly readings are so long for no reason and it's a gamble on whether or not they show up in the weekly quiz. For the weekly discussion, I learned halfway through that in order to get full points you have to tell your life's story to the GE. The lectures were interesting after the first 4 weeks of the course, but don't take it as an elective.
Lecture heavy but are easy to understand and easy to apply when doing homework
Mixed feelings about this professor. Amazing person, really interesting lectures I learned SO MUCH. Was a great teacher for J429. He is really chill about attendance, assignments: just one presentation, one paper and one essay. Really interesting class, just know he YAPS. do what you wish with this info, I say easy A, but theres no structure
Prof. Sen is clearly very passionate about the material he teaches and offers a lot of wisdom in his lectures. I found him to be super nice, funny, and a very organized lecturer. He utilizes his GEs well and incorporates guest lectures into his course. The few papers assigned are generously graded with very clear expectations outlined. Great class!
Im a first year college student. Prof Sen is genuinely nice but his class was 2 hours long for no reason. The first 5 weeks, we only talked about the telegraph. He said that dogs and cats don't have souls. He said Albert Einstein didn't have a soul because he was a mathematician. Im pretty sure he's a Marxist. 20 minute tangents about nonsense.
Professor Sen is great. His lectures are sometimes a bit drab, but are interjected with comedic outbursts. The class had two multiple choice exams, one paper (and another completion-graded paper), and weekly quizzes. The weekly quizzes are almost entirely based on the lectures. His GEs did all of the grading and were very accessible.
I thought he was great, Just very heavy on lectures and if you are not there it will affect how you do on the test. He took up the full time every class and really knew what he was talking about. Just make sure to pay attention.
YOU HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION IN HIS CLASS!! Lectures are not hard to follow; the content is very well selected and engaging. There's a lot of readings, but you only need to get the main points. Like others said, he pushes the class to challenge and expand perspectives, which is great for students looking for classes to ACTUALLY learn/grow from.
Professor Sen was easily one of my favorite professors I have had at UO. JCOM 419 is a super fun class that analyzes reality television and the majority of the class is watching shows and having open discussions about them. There were a couple essays and a group round table presentation that were fun and engaging.
Lectures can be a bit dry, but stay engaged and you'll get a lot out of this class. Utilize resources like unstuck study alongside the materials to prep for quizzes. Discussion boards are graded strictly, so put in the effort. Overall, an interesting subject worth taking.
I hated being in this class, Bish is very nice, but he doesn't give extra credit and majority of the course is graded on tests. We spent 4 weeks on the telegraph and genuinely this isn't how a JCOM class should be taught. His midterm was riddled with as he said “trick questions”. Do. NOT. Take. This class.
I cannot describe how much I regret taking this course. Although valuable, The course itself just feels like a jumble of other academes into a so-called class. Sen himself although nice has outdated teaching methods and has heavy weighted assignments. The study guide provided did not reflect the test at all. Do not recommend.
Lectures are a little too long and Prof Sen knows— he
Bish does his best to entertain the class during his lectures! The information covered is mundane but the way he explains it is much more engaging. Info is easier to learn if you attend lectures but don't stress too much if you have to miss one. GEs are incredibly helpful if you run into issues. Tests are 80 multi-choice, and at least skim readings
Bish is the best professor I've had. He had the unique ability to keep me engaged for two hours and make me want the class to go longer. Although the subject itself is not the most engaging, he made it engaging. If you attend the lectures and take notes, you will pass. There are two 80-question exams, two mini-essays, + weekly assignments.
Sen did an amazing job of teaching this course, he truly cares about his students minds and opinions which made the classroom environment really engaging and enjoyable. He highlights his favorite parts of your notes and has everyone share them out, which was sweet. Would highly recommend this class, I wish I could take his classes every term
One of my favorite classes I've taken, such a great professor full of endless knowledge about reality television. Genuinely cares about each and every student's opinion, which feels so rare as a business student. Wish I could take this class every term.
