Excellent teacher
Funny and knowledgable
Makes Tuesday night classes extremely bearable!
Better than a stand-up comedian. Amusing and informative.
A hoot to have as a prof.
If she was as funny as she thinks she is, she'd be a great prof. Sadly boring

Excellent prof
Cool!
Awesome course and prof!
Great Prof- she is very helpful, very approachable, and she makes learning fun!!
This prof rocks so hard I wish I could take the course again!

If you think that talking about sex can't be boring, TAKE HER CLASS
No Comments
Her tests are mostly on lecture material so don't skip!
She rocks!
Very nice prof, but the multiple choice questions are rough
Loved her fair presentation of all different sexualities and sexual practices.
Her exams were useless with assessing knowledge of subject, tested only memory.
Great lecturer. Funny!! Not too crazy about the tests, though
Lectures were fun, but tests were hard, and pointless.
GREAT PROF!! she's so funny, but watch out for those tests of hers!
Great prof & course but beware--it's more difficult than you probably think!!
Great lady! Smart, funny, good examples, clear lectures, fair tests!
Very charming. Tests moderately difficult. A fun class, lots of laughs.
she asks us all about our sexuality and stuff. i think she should finally come out to the class about herself. create a level playing field.
Really fun class, funny and informative lectures, but really really rough exams. Who knows where she gets her questions from.
kept falling asleep during lectures
She's a very hard marker, but if you really pay attention, ask questions, and do all the work, you can do OK. She really has a passion for what she teaches and is a great teacher though. I'd take more classes from her.
Summer 2003 -- excellent course. Tests are multiple choice and very reasonable. Easy to pay attention. She takes all questions seriously and will look into anything she's not sure of. Great prof!
Good prof, very laid back and explains things well and keeps everyone fairly interested. HARD MCQ exams...avoid taking it as an elective unless you're in an easy term.
She really likes what she teaches. She incorporates her own experience in with her lessons. She makes her lectures fun and keeps her students awake. A great class to finish the week off with!
VERY HARD TESTS!!!!!!!!!!!
She is great, i have already signed on for her next level class! BJ makes learning fun! honestly..You must read and attend class to be sucessful, (thats really the way it should be) her tests are well thought out.
Very funny. Tests can be difficult but if you read and come to class it's ok
as a person, she is very nice, but i really dont' like her teaching style. she digresses a lot and tells a lot of "funny" jokes. (if you like larry smith then you'll like her) her tests are hard, so don't expect to ace it just because you read t
Booooring style of teaching; Thinks her jokes are funny, but the suspence of waiting to draw a laughter from the audience kills the humor. In her exams, she likes to gather up a whole lot of jargon from the book or dull statistical things from the class.
Delightful juvinile humor with Sex class.. sometimes tries to hard at jokes. Good lecturer....great class. Her tests are FAIR! learn your stuff. this class is an easy elective.. a couple mult choice tsts and thats all
bj is not funny, although she tries very hard. sitting through her class was the most painful experience of my undergrad career. she doesn't do her research before class, doesn't produce any new info, and her tests are ridiculously ambiguous. stay away
good lecturer, unprepared sometimes, pace too slow... can spend a lecture on a concept that can be taught in 5 minutes...
Great teacher...good sense of humor and VERY interesting lectures :)
Worst class ever. Lectures were terribly boring but if you don't attend you will fail exams. Tries to make jokes and uses very old evidence and studies. Rude at times and is biased. Would not take a class from her again.
Great Teacher, makes things interesting! But HARD MC test!
The course was dry, but BJ made it fun & interesting! her jokes were a little lame, but at least she makes them. She always takes time to answer questions. You have to go to class to pass the exam, but thats why we pay to go to school.
Funny, easy to talk to, and presents very interesting information.
Great prof, able to keep things light, tho her joes do occasionally fall flat. Be warned tho, don't take any of her courses with the expectation of an easy pass... her MC tests are quite difficult.
funny, smart, knowledgeable, excellent
Great prof. A little odd at times with her sex jokes, but it makes the course interesting. I would definitely recommend this class!
really good prof, interesting material, not hard to get a good mark if you try. go to lectures!

Cool teacher, nice person, funny. very interesting material. this course should be a must take for all those who dont plan on becoming nuns or priests. u will learn alot. u actually enjoy the lectures.
AVOID!!! She does make things interesting, but showing up late to every class then yelling at people when they leave at 5:20 is not something that a good teacher possesses. Expects students to teach themselves.A class average of 64 is not good especially when full of upper years.Worst class ever.
I don't think SMF 204 could be taught by any other professor. She is amazing at giving real-life situations about topics to show how certain things can directly affect you. She provided so much information that other profs may have been shy to talk about. I learned a lot of new things!
Her Test were Freakin impossible. No matter how hard you study you'll never be prepared :( not cool BJ not Cool
If you think it's going to be a fun class TURN BACK NOWWW!!! The content was good but tests were impossible! Study as much as you wish you will still not succeed. You don't know what to expect going into the tests and she doesn't help you! P.S. she has some weird friends! NOT RECOMMENDED!!!
She rocks! She is entertaining and this course is really easy. There is very little reading required. I wish she taught all of my engineering courses too.
Holy Crap! funniest prof ever! And for the people who complain about her tests....if you read the material the exams are a piece of cake. Most wonderful prof ever and she makes everything really easy to remember! Highly interesting course! I recommend for all!
biased and unprofessional
Her personal stories are amazing. The most accepting and thoughtful professor I know. Her classes are among the best...not to mention she one hot tamale!
Most enjoyable class ever. Text book was good, lectures were interesting. The tests were not bad at all if you actually study and do the readings. I wish BJ taught more classes!
BEST PROF EVER!! soo interesting and she makes everything funny as hell. I reccomend this class to EVERYONE!! Text book was 100% worth my $. Tests were easy (i dont know what the person that said theyre impossible was doing). just study BOTH notes and text and you'll get a really good mark FOR SURE!
She was a fantastic teacher, really great. The lectures were interesting, the notes were clear, the textbook was engrossing. However, the tests were really tough. For people who have problems with multiple choice, I do not recommend this class. Overall, a good experience and an enjoyable class!
fun n ez
This prof is one-of-a-kind. She's hilarious, you'll love the class, but the tests are INCREDIBLY tough. I got a 50 and never missed a class. You need to be a psych person to do really well. Still, the class is a lot of fun...maybe better to sit it on than enrol in.
I loved having her as a Prof. She really opened my eyes regarding what a good prof should be like. Tons of fun going to her classes... but her tests are really hard. Its worth it just to be in her class, she really does seem to enjoy what she does.
She is a really hard prof. Her tests are ridiculous. It is like she has something to prove. She is stuck up and if you don't stay after class to admire her, she doenst like you either. Take her if youre a suck up.
Fantastic, wonderful, excellent. Take this course. WOO HOO. Great Prof.
I find professor Rye to be a very helpful and fun person. Her lectures are so interesting, and she always has the best stories to tell. I really learned a lot from her, and her class decided my major. She is amazing
The lectures were very enjoyable however I didn't really feel like they prepared you well for the tests. You must read the text thoroughly. Some of the test material seemed fairly obscure and a little unfair, however I would recommend this class as it was an eye opener, interesting and actually applicable to your life.
GREATEST PROF EVER! She opens your eyes to the content of the course. Hard tests, alot of studying is required but it is completely worth it. I will only take another SMF course if it is offered by Dr. Rye. Everyone should take this course.
BJ really is an amazing prof. I didn't know what to expect from this course, but I found it so entertaining, and the material was quite relevant and informative. The tests are really weird, but easy as long as you know the material and can integrate everything. I HIGHLY recommend this class to anyone! Good work BJ!
Does not care about the students at ALL. Very unorganized.
Probably the worst class I have ever taken. I like classes where if I go, I can actually learn something from it. This class is only about statistics....very boring and unuseful. Jokes aren't funny, and class gets very tiring when your kept past time every time.
BJ does care for her students, and is a wonderful person. However, she conducts her class in a very laid back/relaxed manner, which makes you think that her tests will be the same way. This is NOT the case. Her tests seem to diverge a lot from lecture material, and are hard if you're not a psych major.
Unreasonable, unapproachable, uncaring. Hates you if you're not a SMF student.
Absolutely uncaring and unhelpful, even if the mistake is hers.
She has a unique sense of humour and always tries to answer everyone's questions, BUT I found the midterm very unfair - all of the major concepts were ignored or only had one question focused on them, while the small details that were not useful information were asked about several times on the same test.
great person; love to have her an as aunt or a friend or something, but not as a prof. while she is good at lecturing and keeps us entertained, her tests are ridiculous and not a good representation of material learned in class or the text book. bizarre questions.i wish she would look at the site and see hwo everyone thinks her tests are to hard.
Cannot lecture at all!! AWFUL PROF! tests are VERY difficult. Make sure you study like a mad person for tests/exams or you have no hope in passing. I would not recommend taking is this class at all. She is VERY uncaring and unhelpful towards her students
BJ is a very entertaining professor and really cares about the subject she teaches. You can learn a lot of life lessons from her if you attend class, which I found to be the most valuable part of the course. I didn't ace this course, but I thoroughly enjoyed it!
B.J. is a good lecturer and you can tell she enjoys what she is teaching. The problem is that she is virtually inaccessible outside of class and when you do find her she doesn't want to help you or talk to you really. Unnecessarily difficult exams with a 70% final exam which is ridiculous to say the least. This class could be so much better.
She is a good prof. Her background is clinical psychology, but she makes a successful effort to understand and teach biological aspects of human sexuality. Her examples really drill concepts into your head. I got a 90%, but that involved doing the readings and writing down the material-related questions that she posed during most lectures.
Horrible just horrible. Very difficult course. Be prepared to study your butt off if you want a 75
I was really looking forward to this class and becoming an SMF major, but taking this class with BJ completely changed my mind! while i found some of her lectures entertaining her tests and expectations were RIDICULOUS. and she was not caring at all towards her students. I would never take a class with her again!
I had her in my first year and I loved her lectures! Fantastic at keeping the class interested and entertained! Her test weighting is a little stressful, but it isn't impossible to do well in her class. If you go to the classes and read, chances are you can manage a B
I look forward to going to her class. She seems fair, interesting and knowledgable and has interesting projects that are exciting to do. She has a good sense of humour, cares about her students and all around is a really great prof. I wish to take more classes from her; highly recommended.
I was really excited to take this class, but BJ has ruined it for me. Either she focuses too much on a slide or not enough time. Her slides are also unclear as she doesn't spell things out and she doesn't know how to use the symbols on her computer. She's a hard tester and expects WAY too much out of her students.
You must keep up on readings! This class seems to be more enjoyable than her 204 class, but it is just as hard. She issues a quiz on the day's reading before each class which helps us to keep up. Tests are extremely hard. I recommend rereading the most important readings and going through your class notes along with the slides a couple times.
Very funny, interesting and personal professor. She keeps class engaged, but strict with electronics. Textbook readings are mandatory, as the multiple choice tests are VERY specific.
It was a block course in the spring which means you have 6 hours of lecture each week. You can imagine how much material must be prepared and covered in a week. Very hard to keep up. Her exams are fair. In theory should be quite easy since they are all multiple choices. But being a non-psych student, bombed the midterm without knowing how to study
The midterms are incredibly hard (#1 had a 68% average, #2 had a 69% average). The final exam is cumulative and the course covers a lot of material. She does, however, tell a lot of stories and make a lot of jokes. Recommended if you're ready to put at least 6 hours of studying aside, not including reading the textbook.
Loved going to Professor Rye's class! Has a great sense of humor and makes the material interesting. Tests are a bit difficult though and the exam this semester is worth more than half your grade which is stressful. However, I found that if you attend class, do your readings, and study well in advance for tests you'll be ok. Highly recommend her!
Her tests were extremely hard and unreasonable. She found the most insignificant parts of the textbook and tested on that one line you won't be able to remember.Helpful with student concerns, but I cannot get over the unfair testing. I would accept a hard test, but not an unfair one.Tended to go off on tangents in class and did not stay on subject!
BJ Rye was my very favourite professor. If you ask her, she will help, but you have to carry your own weight and grade in the class. That means studying and attending lectures and doing readings- there are no free grades.
She was probably my favourite prof teaching my favourite course in my undergraduate career. Her testsquizzes are fairly difficult but doing the readings doesn't feel like a chore.
She is really funny and makes the content very easy to understand. However, her tests are unfair and do not accurately represent that information that you learn in class. She is also very close-minded and will ignore your questions in class if they challenge her own points of view.
I loved her class. She was fun and informative. Her tests are all MC and super difficult. However, I found that they didn't get harder. If you can survive one then you can survive the others. Just attend lectures, pay attention, and study.
She is an excellent lecturer and makes class fun and interesting. It is a class about sexuality which may seem awkward but she makes it light and a great learning environment. She is a great professor but a very hard marker. Her tests are all multiple choice and she expects you to know ever little detail and requires you to use deeper thinking.
I had an amazing time in BJ's class this semester. It has been my favourite class in my 3 years of studies here at Waterloo! I don't think I've missed a single lecture. She is an entertaining lecturer. She has a technology contract so you can't use your computer without signing it... and NO PHONES. She is truly hilarious and I learned a lot too!
She was hilarious, and I really enjoyed the lectures. She used a variety of teaching methods which helped you to really learn things, and she incorporated every perspective into her teaching, not only her own beliefs. That said, the tests are difficult but if you study hard you'll do well. Her powerpoint slides online are vague, so attend class!
Her lectures are so funny and make me excited to go to class. Tests are all multiple choice and challenging, but getting a good grade is completely attainable if you read the textbook and show up for lectures.
There is quite a bit of reading for this course but nothing too intense. Her tests are fair and you need to study for sure. THIS IS NOT A BIRD COURSE. BJ is an interesting lecturer but pretty out of date and very research focused. If you have taken psych and or physiology this course will be easy for you. Very science and psych focused.
BJ is a great person, but a terrible professor. She doesn't like marking so she leaves that to her TAs who take forever (handed in assignment in October, the final is in 2 days and still no mark). Lots of reading, the articles were pointless and horrible and her quizzes were extremely hard. She goes off not tangents and I didn't learn much.
Tortures students with work and boasts about it. No phones allowed in lectures. Kicks you out if you use your laptop for anything other than notes. Lack of knowledge and biased opinions. Admits she is too lazy to update new slides online. Bosses around and judges students. Questioning her leads to her arguing irrationally so as to ridicule you.
The content may be interesting but is not worth the horrible grade. I usually get 90's. Tests are too hard. May be easier if you have a science background. She's nice, but her slides are disorganized. If you don't go to class you won't understand what the slides mean. I regret taking this course. It would be more enjoyable if it wasn't so hard.
Inconsiderate loud teacher who talks with the TA's loudly during exams. Hypocritical teacher who supports focus in class, but picks up a phone and talks on the way out during exams. Disorganized teacher with terrible unappealing slides to the eyes. Not consistent with the slides she provides. Challenges the textbook and acts like a know-it-all.
Take this class if you enjoy reading long chapters, like to memorize statistics, and are up to challenging multiple choice questions.
This class ruined my entire semester because I went through it thinking I was going to fail despite trying everything I could. The final exam was worth 55% and was cumulative, adding extra stress to your life if you didn't do well in the midterms worth 20% or more. The tests I find were extremely unfair as some questions were very ambiguous.
Really good teacher, very lecture and content heavy, difficult texts, but very interesting if you are engaged in discussion.
prepare to be tested on two completely different criteriums: the text and the lectures. They are extremely different from each other that it feels like taking 2 classes in one. Her all focus is to make the material as confusing as possible. She wants you to read all the chapters and memorize lectures even if she is not going to test you on it.
extremely difficult tests
Despite being an Arts course, all of the tests and the final were extremely biology-focused. My friend in pre-med at a different school used the same textbook I did for this course. Everything was multiple choice. Very difficult course. I took it as an elective because it sounded very interesting, do not make this mistake.
B.J. does her research and updates her lectures accordingly. She is very accommodating of any special needs providing you have your documents (like a doctor's note)
The workload reflects that this is a university course. Dr. Rye uses exams that are difficult to pass if you haven't studied. In a lecture she used to use the N word to form an example. She apologized publicly when confronted and immediately updated the lecture. She does teach from outside the textbook since no textbook is comprehensive.
Bj rye will say a test is based on chapters in txtb. But 75% of the test is her poorly constructed, messy slides. Poor communication!! Bj's slides are messy, hard to follow, poorly labelled and organized. Where do her lessons begin and end? Bj Rye does not use proper rubrics, but grades harshly; making the grades feel subjective to her opinion.
Plenty of care is taken when creating accessible lectures. While the slideshows have little written content, the voice-overs are extremely thorough. Her sophisticated vocabulary is present on tests, prepare appropriately and take your time and you will do just fine. By far the kindest and most accessible professor. My saving grace this term.
REALLY tough grader, and the tests are insanely difficult. I wasn't expecting this class to be biology heavy. On written assignments she'll deduct marks for every mistake, rather than once for the same kind of mistake. She's also incredibly disorganized. On the 3rd test and she was testing us on articles that weren't assigned to us.
Would not take her classes ever again. Her lectures are all over the place and her tests make no sense. She tells you what types of questions are going to be on the test and then they are completely different. Save yourself the stress and don't take this class if she's teaching it. The material is great and totally interesting but not with her.
I think the other reviews are a bit harsh. Professor Rye is not that bad and I found the course very good and interesting. The lecture MP4 videos are useful and the readings are not too long. The tests can be a bit difficult, but you can definitely do well if you study well. Don't avoid this class just because of the prof rating!
BJ Rye was by far one of the worst professors I have ever encountered at the University of Waterloo. Rye's 200 level course is extremely demanding and unforgiving. Rye will not make accommodations for her students; however, she will return your grades whenever it suits her.
Insensitive and ridiculous - setting students up to fail - makes us right a paper critiquing her own study that is awful but if we actaully say somethings wrong with it we get a bad mark
Test questions are written like riddles and it's as if she wants her students to fail. I don't know anyone that did well on our major assignment. She gave the opportunity to resubmit but the maximum you could go up in your final grade was 2% and she gave super vague comments for improvement such as "rewrite this section". Not an easy prof at all
